I am running a Deadlands game in the summer. However the twist is that it will be placed in Great Britain. Lovecratian horror meets steampunk with a dash of folklore and myth. I have the music to set the mood which will consist of Arcanum Obscura and Apocalyptica. I am creating the world from the ground up to be a nation run by science Mysticism. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Obligatory.
Maybe I did ask for help correctly.OH WISE MEN OF /tg/ HELP ME WITH YOU GUIDANCE!
Narrow it down a little? You want help on what exactly?
>>4207854I would like ideas on what kind of organizations exist in this world. What kind of enemies should I provide. I made this thread to get help on brainstorming new ideas essentially.
Deadlands is stupid.Steampunk is even more stupid.
>>4207915your argument is overwhelmingly convincing. I asked for help not trolls. Thank you move along.
>>a nation run by science MysticismSo, something like "If the church of England was based on Druidism instead of Christianity?"
>>4207978whoops I meant for that to be " run by science. Mysticism such as creatures of legend exist but through a combination of stealth/magic and the lack of empirical evidence is largely dismissed as nothing more than outlandish claims.Sorry.
Oddly enough I'm just going to suggest some reading.Read The Golden Compass Series, I know it's a bit kiddy but it's very visually descriptive. Also try and find a book called, "Whitechapel Gods," by S.M. Peters, it is a fantastic book and has some crazy ideas. Suck as a plague that turns people into clockwork automatons. For a personal suggestion, have a blatantly Gestapo-esque organization, it lets you openly be a dick to everything without rhyme or reason.
>>4208070Sorry for my terrible typos.
Have some druids. Have some old style fey in there. Umm god what was that French folk tale about some kind of ghost like wolf? Throw something like that in there? Have the Illumanati for shits and giggles. Organization wise: Have the Monarchy in place. Not as strong as it was but have some of the nobles be upandcoming scientists. They get a plot of land and the like and are allowed to do research. Have an Air Corp. Winged-Infantry with some kind of strange steampunk winged pack. Have a Regression Committee . they want things to go back to the way they were. Monarchy and all. Have them be puppeted by nobles by blood. Sorry for the bricks of text. My mind is just kinda running with me.
An underwater factory. that was originally created as a way to dig for a valuable source of fuel, after many years became it's own separate nation. As more and more scientists and engineers families came to stay more space was needed to accommodate them. So more space was made. People then saw an opportunity to make a profit from everyone living many leagues under the ocean and so they opened up businesses. You can see where this is going eventually people wanted to break away from Britain like the Americans had done almost a hundred years ago. Since the facility was owned by several companies they decided to become independent from Britain. This did not go well with Britain but they were promised tasty deals that they couldn't refuse on the materials that they had originally sought after.
>>4208070>>4208145This is exactly what I was looking for thank you.
Also, fill in a basis for, "HERE THAR BE FAIRIES," and the like. Because the, "they were here first," or "they just are," is incredibly un-inventive.
>>4208208Any suggestion on how to make it more creative?
Hmmm...You could make them all scientific rejects, that fits the science build, for examples ghost are simply a line of experiments to make people into an aether form. From a more mystic side, they could be mother nature response to man's industrialization of the planet. (sorry for a near blatant FF7 rip off, but it's cool.)Or for the Lovecraft throw, make them all creatures only existent to certain individuals and make it seem as though people who suffer from seeing them are part of some epidemic. Think Constantine but as a disease and also a government secret, or possible birth defect.
>>4208208is that Spring-heeled-mutha fucking Jack?
Damn why am I giving you all these ideas?Oh well feel free to snatch any you like.
>>4208296cause they are good aaaand your a friendly anon?
>>4208208oh shit run for the hills AHHHH he's at the hills already.Oh shi-
>>4208291I think it's supposed to be a little red riding hood, thing.
>>4208171Glad I could help. How big did you want the folk lore/fairy tale bit to be a part of it? I love me some Lovecraftian horror but mixing the two would be a hit or miss in my opinion. Not only that but what tech level of steampunk? Grazy gizmos or just things we have today but steamified? An old folk tale comes to mind. The legend of Jack. He sold his soul to the devil. When the devil came to collect Jack asked for one more pint of booze. But he didn't have the coin to pay. Jack turned to the devil and asked "Just to get this along could you turn yourself into a pence to pay for the pint?" the devil did and as soon as Jack had the pence he put it into his coin purse that had a string with a silver cross on it. No idea how you could use that but it spring to mind for some reason.
H.G. Wells "Wings over the World" from Things to come (try and watch the movie) but more steam-punky with Dirigible bases. (Oh Jeeze that sounds almost like Girl Genius - but fuck it - I like Blimps) Fareie could be another dimension (which would also explaine time dialation effects) . - Although that has shades of TORG.
>>4208316 I see but the dude around the corner has the look...
Oh and what about Phantom Highwaymen and Black Dogs.(you know the kind that if you see you die)
You also really need to establish government, Especially in an urban setting. Although in my person experience an oppressive government is more fun to play against. But I believe a Johnny Mnemonic, or Tank Girl, kind of, "tribes of the cities," deal could be interesting.
>>4208319Actually off of your first idea there could be too many powers in the world. You have your lovecraft trying to end existence as we know it (death to everything and in extension humans). Then you have nature's sprites and werewolves trying to stop the apocalypse and revert the world to a mystical nature (death to cthulu and maybe humans). Then you have the industrial age trying to survive WITH SCIENCE.
>>4207769Sam, i find you everywhere
>>4208319My thinking was that The Old gods exist and they are what they are. I planned on the Dunwich horror essentially being the first adventure.Faires folk are what is left of pagan gods and ancient spirits that were worshiped many hundreds of years ago. They are growing weaker because of the lack of faith and worship. They are whispers of their former selves but still hold some sway over the new world. Before the veil is permanently drawn on them, they are trying to ensure the survival of the world that they watched over for so long. In come feytouched heroes.
Hmmm another thought struck me. Though it may just be my mild obsession with Jack the Ripper. But Steampunk Jack the Ripper. Or Saucy Jack. Make him some kind of deranged serial killer. Taking parts from people trying to make a golem of some sort or experimenting on people and leaving disfigured steampunk limbs in the place of those in flesh and blood. Or have him be one of the Old Powers some kind of Horror. Aciddently summoned from beyond, killing those that give off the right 'scent' low borns and the like. Or have it be some sort of redcap like fey or being killing the 'impure'...Yeah I shall stop rambling now.
and then of course there is the Hound of the Baskervilles (what if it was a werewolf?) and half a dozen other Holmes mysteries dressed up to be more supernatural?
Get the fuck out of here Eli.Why are you still up? lol Don't you have class or work?
>>4208394Exactly that could work so well with the feel of this campaign
and then there is Jack the Ripper. what if his murders had a hideous arcane purpose and was opening a Gateway....
>>4208360I was thinking maybe monarchy would be fun to work with
>>4208381This picture is all Wild, Wild, West. Go for Weird Westerns!
Op here this is why I love you >>4208410>>4208357>>4208364
>>4208384Jack the Ripper is actually Victor Frankenstein? You sir have created a truly awesome monster!Kudos.
>>4208381There is a good Neil Gaiman story (I think it's in Mythos By Gaslight or something similar) - ah found it...a study in Emerald - where Britania (and Dagon) rule the waves. Victoria is Mother Hydra and Morioraty is the "good guy"
Look up folklore and old stories native to the British Isles. Monsters, historical figures, etc. Then implement them Deadlands-style (the Reckoners/manitou are at the root of everything, pretty much.)
>>4208427Fuck yes, Doctor Steel. Also, a Monarchy could be the puppet system of the Lovecraftian Gods.
>>4208442actually found a free audio download http://entertheoctopus.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/links-and-things-3/
I personally think that vagabonds, street urchins, gangs, and a gutter society is obligatory for any steampunk setting.
>>4208432Lack of sleep creates the best monsters.
>>4208384No do not stop good sir. Brilliance should never be silenced.>>4208447I have started to do so . It seems there is a veritable gold mine of stories and ideas.>>4208448they will defiantly hold sway over it that is for sure . Thanks!
>>4208462And Frankenstein's monster is needed only to combat Mr. Hyde after Dr. Jekyll downs the potion and terrorizes the Rue Morgue.
>>4208460Totally. Steampunk is best when it's closest to Victorian realism. Plus, you know, steam powered supercomputers and shit.On a kinda related note, anyone interested in grimy Victorian stuff should check out:http://www.victorianlondon.org/publications/sevencurses.htmThis book is SO cash.
I have a great urge to play in this game.
The Sky pirates are a band of sailors and thieves who began stealing parts and inventions from the Collegium that really didn't seem to have anything to do with one another. That is until the parts that were being stolen became more and more expensive and rare. These were not isolated incidents . This was a collective effort. Eventually raids began occurring on transport blimps that would carry passengers and valuables across distances and countries. Raids conducted by groups of winged machines piloted by one or more men depending on there size. This has made travel companies up their security and add escorts consisting of bounty hunters or mercenaries. They fight are becoming more intense but less frequent. Some say the pirates are preparing stronger machines with more deadly weapons. Their have also been rumors of a flying city that is fueled by a demon and captained by the pirate who caught him.
>>4208453stupid file format and propriety..sorry I posted it.
Anyway back on topic from the raid of awesome. I think science should really be the main cause of all trauma and troubles, mind you influence from a gibbering and mad deity may influence science into a dooms day device, the natural or mythical beasties, should also be trying to cause dystrophy in man to reclaim what may have originally been there land.
>>4208498This is perfect Th city itself is going to rise above and almost touch the clouds. This will leave the opportunity for an entirely different society to emerge in the darkness of the towers above.
This may be out of place but and I am sorry but it is in relation to a webcomic. ANY how; if you want an interesting fey idea lookup Urban Fey. It is an interesting take on how the Fey would adapt to civilization.
>>4208543Seriously read, "Whitechapel Gods." That is where the majority of the plot takes place. Almost an identical cityscape.
>>4208538Yes this should definitely bean issue although I want the knowledge of these mythic creatures to not be excepted by the normal populace. Flights of fancy by the poor or deranged tales of a mad beggar. Completely unaware.
>>4208569No I will look it up thanks for the help.>>4208532The attempt is appreciated mate. I will find it.>>4208573Excellent I will read it. Source materials are very much needed. I am actually thinking that this campagin may turn out really cool.
>>4208580Let me shamelessly plug my ideas, an redirect you to this:>>4208283Take what I said about Lovecraft and apply to fey. Bingo.
Steampunk: CheckFey: CheckOld Gods/Lovecraftian overtones: Check....Where do I sign up?
>>4208605Oh now that I reread it I love it that is exactly what I will do. It fits the setting and will make certain people in the party very useful in those kinds of situations. Should the lovecraftian horrors also be obscured by this same veil?
>>4208624>>4208499Sign up in the lobby. Believe it or not I may have trouble finding players because of time issues for them.
>>4208626Well why the hell not? Make it so! Although, I think the Old Gods should be able to selectively manifest, making use of the common man and pitting players against drooling masses ripping there own skin off and bludgeoning players with there own organs. I can't think of any useful reason the Fey would manifest at the moment, but don't let that stop the idea. Also, someone please take a minute and go archive this thread.
Hmmm how big of a military would the country have? A strong navy sounds like it should be in existence. Maybe a strong Aero Corp. I like the idea of a Winged Infantry my self. Maybe large airships with hangers that open and the winged infantry do something similar to an air drop and then go flying? Maybe have some naval encounter with some Old Ones or something. Maybe in an experimental sub? Have the strong Gestapo be mostly comprised of steampunk/steamborg individuals. Mostly the lowerclasses promised that they would have some where to live and have three squares a day. get them while they are young. Maybe there is some sort of war going on? Ooooh what about imperialism? For this steampowered Renaissance you have to get the materials and all that. Maybe a war overseas? Or even closer to home. maybe some rebels that are too well informed or are getting victories against all odds. Have them allied with some otherworldy force. Fey or other wise. >>4208648Point me to the lobby!
Remember, the core Deadlands book talks about what's been going on in England due to the Victorian habit of bringing mummies over to be unwrapped.Hint: MUMMIES BE PISSED!
If I might make a suggestion for several organisations. The Royal Society makes an excellent hotbed of mad scientific activity possibly rivaled by the independent industrialists.Country nobility are very different compared to city nobility with the latter more likely to hold onto old ideals of chivalry, honour, folklore compared to the formers closed doors decadence. The middle classes are on the up and up and allied closely with the masons. At the bottom of the pile you have the disorganised crime cartels of londoners and immigrants mixed in with the folkloric covens and warlocks of the country.
>>4208662Yes they should be able to do so. At least certain monsters should. Not all of them should. Some need help from willing(or in some cases unwilling, Imagining a man desperate to stop the voices, collects pieces to a ritual to allow a great beast to manifest itself fully in our world.) people and I think Cults are going to be a big part of the campagin. From the slimiest alleyway all the way to the royal court, the court infests and guides society to best meet it's goals.
>>4208680hahah yes that should sow up in one form pr another>>4208679Well I live in Evansville , Indiana sooo the lobby might be a ways a way. Although if I could figure out how to DM this on line and in the presence of players count me in.Also this I agree with the archiving bit.
>>4208718Join our cult we have great dental! And do some Peter Pan, "I do believe in faeries," claps. Kind of dick sounded but this is the nearest thing that comes to mind.
I've read Whitechapel Gods, I've got to add that it was really great. Inspired me to write a bunch of steampunk stuff. As well as that I would reccomend "Mainspring" by Jay Lake. The entire universe is literally one clockwork device. The book itself can get kinda slow, but all in all I enjoyed it.Also, I'd kill to be in your deadlands campaign.
>>4208679see>>4208512That ties in perfectly actually.>>4208689These organizations will be used. you can count on it. What do you think the general feel of the populace towards this would be?>>4208161
>>4208752I'll try and hunt out this book. You need cannibals. Seriously. And not just the gutter rats. The Cannibal Cult Of the Noble Courts. Maybe a bit cheesy but still a great idea with anything Lovecraftian.
>>4208775 about >>4208161 I see a war with Giant Sea Turtles carrying clockwork cannons that belch Greek Fire. Also, for a bit of humor but also potential deadliness, catapults that launch Octopi that have blade grafted to them.
>>4208800Cannibals are a must my friend, they will serve under an old god of some sort I'm sure. Who would they eat though?
>>4208847Prisoners? Abducted poor? The sons of highranking officials? Figure out why they eat and I think we can figure out who they eat.
>>4208847 Virgins. DUH! They should contend to bring exotic meats. i.e. Islanders, freshly dead bodies, virgins, babies. Just something about nobility makes me think of them all trying to one-up one another.
>>4208837hahahah holy shit. I can see people looking out from the boats "What the ell' is that captain?""Jesus Christ their shooting bladed octopi at us!"First mate gets sliced in half."Dear lord, I promise never to eat sushi again if I live through this!!"
Just go straight up Adeptus Mechanicus. Seriously. They build, learn of, and worship machines without knowing much about them.
>>4208890Sorry, sleeplessness is wrecking me, but that was fantastic commentary. That would make damn effective langrage shot though. Sails of enemy ships would be fucked.
Well, you can play around a bit with the Freemasons. If you've read "Back East: The North" you know there was that guy who got kicked out, then started corrupting the one in the US. Also, you have the group mentioned in "Rascals, Critters and Varmits" the Explorer Society. Those guys are fun.Oh, and let's not forget the Brits version of Slade, The Cackler.
>>4208877Men are the only creatures with souls. The more souls that are consumed, the more powerful one becomes.(Coincidentally, the old gods may just appreciate their sacrifices and bless them with a little power. Not to mention some horrible disfigurements.
>>4208886Hmmm make them all gourmands? "Hm, oh I heard you had some Hawaiian how was he?""Oh you know how some of those islanders can be, though much sweeter than one of those aboriginals from Australia I do say."
Air pirates versus the Sea rulers would be an EPIC story. but only because of the ridiculousness that would need to ensue for either side to win.
>>4208937Exactly.
I did run a game of DL, and I ended up having two Brits. They'd made the characters completely independent of one another. One was a report who'd run a piece on the Royal Family, that thought it might be a good time to explore the Americas. While the other was a member of the Explorer's Society. They were two of the greatest characters I've ever had in a game.Good luck to you!
>>4208912exactly. The creature would struggle and rip the shit out of their sails. Man I wish I could play this with people on line as well as live. Shit would be so cash.
Well it is currently 4:20 am and I need at least 2 hours of sleep before I start a new day tomorrow. So I am unfortunately signing off. Don't forget to archive please!
What do you guys think of this? The Collegium is a collection of Scientists that essentially run industry and technological advancement in Britain. They are run by a council of their most intelligent or clever members.Funding for their ideas and ventures come from several sources. The Monarchy, various companies, and private investors. Their inventions are wild and their makers are even wilder. The word mad scientist could be thrown about often. Some of them are out for personal glory others want to make a difference in the world and still others are expected to enroll if either of their parents are members. That is, if they can make the cut.
>>4208995hey before you go my email is [email protected] .mail me if you got any more ideas. Thanks for the help man. You shall be credited.
I hope this tread continues to develop with the same strength of ideas that it has for the last few hours. Make it great guys! And before I leave, Have a background!
So what for certaintty has been decided to be used so for so that we can build and offer better ideas to work with what the setting has or has not.

>>4209177Excellent. I like this thread. It has all the things I like. But I need to hit the hay as well. Glad to know I helped or atleast got some ideas flowing. Good luck and godspeed. And if you every get this thing going online let me know. [email protected]
Bristol Palin's ex says he lived in the same room with Bristol at the Palin household, that he thinks Sarah suspected they were having sex, and that they had safe sex "most of the time"
>>4209294alright I will let you know what happens regardless. Thanks for the help.
1) Archive2) Thread is awesome. 3) Make a unified /tg/ steampunk setting? No steampunkpics on new computer. Well, none except ones from this thread :) So have this.
