The deer pads soundlessly through the tree-filled wilderness, stopping to listen to the air, its head held up, graceful neck craning in the wind that ruffled its velvetine coat. It's soulful dark eyes scan the trees, before deciding the coast was clear. It is mid-bound, body arched over a stretch of underbrush, when it is driven to earth by a woman with shimmering wet wings. It struggles for only a panicked moment before the smell of cooking flesh fills the forest air, and its bones see sunlight for the very first time.

You get back to the airfield from hunting as 54's hijacked helicopter arrives. A bewildered-looking Subject 88 steps off the craft, looking somewhat shaken up. You stay back a bit, watching your team greet the hulking man from behind a sheet-metal hangar.
"Miss Helen, what are you doing?" comes a whispered voice. You turn to see Clara, hiding behind a stack of empty fuel-barrels, arms clutched around her legs.
"Watching...the...what are YOU doing?" you reply.
"Mister Brody and I are playing hide and seek!" she responds cheerfully.
"And...and how long have you been hiding?"
"He has not found me for almost two whole ho-...oh," she says, her face falling.

    >What do?
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 06/04/10(Fri)20:25 No.10279238
"Welcome aboard," Andre says to the hulking man as he looks from him, to Charles, to Brody, finally cracking a misshapen smile when he sees Charlotte.
"Hey yeah, thanks pal," 88 growls, ignoring Andre's outstretched hand. The four-armed man sniffs dismissively, crossing both sets of arms after adjusting his uniform. 88 extends a beefy, bone plated hand towards the frenchwoman.
"Lady luck, I presume. Nice to, uh, meet you," he says.
"Indeed," she responds, taking his hand gingerly, her face unsure. 88 manages to shake her hand without crushing it, chuckling to himself.
"Well, is this what we've got?" he says, turning and looking around at the rest of the gathered comrades. "Pretty paltry stuff, for trying to take on a God, isn't it? Where's the lady in charge, anyway?"

You help the disappointed Clara to her feet.
"You should have known better," you say.
She nods. "I know...I just thought it would be fun. He's really nice, when he can remember where he is."
"Hey, Clara...when I was gone, and you guys were in Europe..."
Her eyes go wide, and she nods slowly.
"That was so scary..." she murmurs, before stepping forward to hug you. Her head rests against your stomach. "I'm glad you're back..."
"Me too," you say, stroking her hair. It feels real, almost too real. "But that's not what I wanted to say." You push her back slightly, putting a hand under her chin to angle her head up towards you.
"When everything was falling apart like that...you really kept yourself together, you managed to not only keep the team alive, but you even got us three more members. I wanted to let you know how much that helped, you really saved our asses. I'm proud of you."
Clara's face absorbs what you're saying slowly before blooming into joy. She hops up and down slightly before hugging you again, nuzzling against you

"Ah!" comes 88's gravelly voice. "There you are!"
He's stomped over to you, the crowd behind him dissipating somewhat. Everyone seems to be enjoying the meager downtime as best as they can. Ramiel and Creed sit on the wing of one of the jets, talking quietly. Brody talks amicably with Andre and Charlotte; they seem to be putting up with his quirks fairly well. Charles is everywhere at once, small clumps of bees investigating various portions of the airfield or droning lazily about.
"Good to see you again, glad you decided to throw in with us," you say, craning your head back to look at him.
"Oh, I missed the little girl," he says, gesturing to Clara, who waves back timidly. "What was I thinking, this'll be easy."
"They'll do. They better. Or we are all dead. Ready to kick the ass of a god or two?"
"Ready as the best of you," he says, cracking his knuckles hollowly. "I'm just trying to think of what the hell I'd do with myself if the world ever actually calmed down."

    You text 54.
"Skynet, if that's what you're going by these days. Could you get into Arkham's systems? I need to find a library. A space library. I'm serious."

Meandering over to Brody, Charlotte, and Andre, you note Brody's expanded keychain of index cards. He pages through them as you approach, before reading something and nodding.
    "Helen!" he says proudly.
    "Yes." you say. He salutes.
"Ma'am," he says with a nod. You nod back, turning to Charlotte.
"So, Charlotte, exactly how lucky are you?"
She puts a finger to her lips, humming as she considers the question.
"Hmmm...je ne sais pas exactement," she muses. "Eet is 'ard to quantify. I 'ave never broken a bone, par example, or gotten a speeding ticket. I 'ave never been cheated on. I once lost a bet on the World Cup, and when I was very small, my little dog, was hit by a car and killed."
"Do you have any combat skills?"

    >> ArkhamArchivist !DiStrue33Q 06/04/10(Fri)22:07 No.10281124
My initial idea is to pair up.
Also, we need to assess how survivable certain members are within 13's area of influence.
Us and Ramiel are the obvious air support, plus probably Charles.
Cilian might be able to function as long range, dunno if he has the capability.
If we have a rifle, Brody and Clara can be our sniper support.
    Hmm...
Ground teams would probably be Philip, Andre, Charlotte, and Cilian.
The fliers can function as Paratroopers I suppose.
We need some way to communicate between everyone.

Nothing really. He might even show up in the middle of it. Unfortunately, we have no reliable way of tracking him or even finding him, so going after him is pretty much out of the picture. We could also try the space library, but we have no leads on that either and I doubt we want to scour that Phoebus planet. Going after 13 is our best, and only, option at this point.

"I haven't heard anything good about 13, and from what I understand of military efforts, things like nuclear missiles have a tendency to reach her as butterflies or ball-bearings. I still say a multi- or hopefully omni-directional assault would be a good idea. Snipers could be used to distract 13 at key moments. My greatest fear is that if we don't have adequate communication, or if 13 can cut off our communication, we'll be hopelessly lost and the whole thing will fall apart."

A car-sized spider wanders into the cleared area of the airfield, fangs tasting the air, its strange arrangement of eyes regarding you all. It skitters hastily to the side as the trees themselves bend at the tops to accomodate the girth of the house-sized spider that follows, a twisted spiral of wet-looking eyes and a triad of sharp angular fangs snapping at the air.

First of all, I only trip for this thread, just so there's some cogency of who's suggesting what. Additionally, if you were to notice, any "fapfiction" has just been done as one-shot spinoffs of what's been an almost daily quest that's been running for almost a month, and those two threads were only in the past two days or so, since the person running the thread is nearing the end of his story.

Games like chess, checkers, bridge, poker, etc. spurn little to no discussion, as much of the "strategy" of such have already been beaten to death by others. However, standard PnP games require that someone create a creative and enthralling narrative for their playing group to explore, and, much like any other creative output, discussing and brainstorming with your contemporaries often make you better at such creative outputs in the future. Thusly, I do believe that quest threads, while you may not prefer them, are not "cancerous", but instead allow for those who are interested in the narrative art to explore new concepts outside of their imaginations.

Clearly we should disregard any sort of game that has arisen during our lifetime that wasn't introduced by the former generation, as "traditional" indicates that it is a tradition, which is defined by something that is passed down from generation to generation.

This is basically what I'm talking about.

I know 4chan's text limit isn't exactly...novel material and the average 4channer has a serious problem reading, but more narrative in the story would improve it drastically. I like the characters, but I feel nothing from the environment, it doesn't feel exactly engaging. When making a quest thread, I feel that atmosphere is just as important as the plot and characters.

Please don't take this wrong way, OP. But your storytelling style makes it very hard for newbies to get into.

    Polite sage

Alright...if we're going into a Lovecraftian Nightmare of a library, I'm saying there'll be spawn. And San damage.

Take the usual team, I vote. Brody, Clara, Creed, Ourselves. Clara to copy down data...wait, no, not Creed. Creed could get killed, and fire don't work in space. I'd say spawn can't feel pain, so no Charles...

Ask. "Who else wants to go into space? Brody's good at dying, so he'll be coming, and Clara can record any information we find there."

A note about narrative while you're deciding: I am aware of the occasional failings of atmosphere. While I do my best, bear with me if descriptions seem stark or lacking; I am under serious time constraints to shuffle your dialogue and scattered desires into a cohesive thread, and I've been focusing mainly on maintaining distinct and evolving characters within the plot.
This isn't an excuse, really, it's just the truth. If I had time to rewrite and re-edit everything atmosphere would be one of the first things I would add. Thanks to the criticising Anon for placing it more in the forefront of my mind, I'll try to pepper in more descriptive passages.

You somewhat uneasily take a chunk of nectar from the broodling silently offering it to you. It regards you with its unblinking multitude of eyes as you look at the nectar.
It does indeed look like crystallized honey, though wet in places where the spiders have been gnawing on it. You slowly break off a chunk, shrugging before popping it into your mouth.
    "Here goes nothing..."
It goes down sweet, and cooling, like a menthol cough-drop. You nod to the others.
    "It's not too bad."
Ramiel scoops up a handful, and the others follow suit. Clara licks at hers carefully before deciding that it does in fact taste palatable. Soon you all have bellies tingling with the strange sensations of the spider's nectar.

You realize you can no longer feel the inside of your mouth. A cool numb sensation, like novacaine, has spread over your body, seeping outward from your gut. You hear Atlach-Nacha laugh, as though underwater.

"The nectar fogs the mind; we see you have noticed. We wonder how strong the words of bonding are; will we be able to resist the urge to gobble you up in your helpless state?"

"Garfield, can you think straight?" A broodling has crawled close to you, its wide-eyed asymmetrical face peering into yours. You shake your head, stumbling a little.
"Yeah, but you sound like you're far away," Garfield says. He sounds like he's far away. Probably not a coincidence.

The other three appear to be shaken up as well. The quartet of small (er) spiders is crowded around you.
"Cling to them," 96 says foggily. "Cling and do not let go. We wish you...luck, as you perceive it."

You clamber onto the back of the spider nearest to you. It chitters softly as you cling to the thick, wiry hairs protruding at odd intervals from its abdomen. Clara nervously looks at you as she clings to her own spider. You flash her a smile and a nod. Ramiel straddles his spider with his legs, arms crossed impatiently, while Andre curses to himself in German, trying to find decent handholds.
"Everybody ready?" you say sleepily. Several of the spiders hiss and chatter wordlessly.

StonerDM, Bloodquest inspired me to run the Arkham game with my group, using Mutants and Masterminds.

It's like Men In Black...kinda. Incorporates ideas from various series, making them all canon. There are even bits from Read or Die in there. The people play either Agents of Arkham, outside sources, or subjects going through rehabilitation to be Arkham employees.

You feel a rush of air as your spider lifts into the air, its spindly legs dangling beneath it like the limp fingers of a sleeping hand. The four of you ascend swiftly, leaving the safety of the ground below you. You can't discern how exactly the spiders are moving through the air; you can't discern much of anything. You concentrate on telling your hands not to let go, for any reason.

"Take care in dark places, little worms, or the void will form the dirt of your graves."

You are above the clouds now. You feel a sense of peace and weightlessness. Very faintly, you perceive that your pocket is buzzing; you have a text message.

Sure. Our party is pretty awesome, too.

Foremost is the World-renowned psychologist, Dr. Phobia, who Arkham tries to suppress-he helps with their subject suppression, so they give him a lot of leeway-but he refuses to lie to the world, and tell them he doesn't have powers. His ability is to make you see your greatest fear-he uses this in psychology to help you overcome your fear, work through the reasons for it, etc. Quite groundbreaking. And useful for controlling Subjects.

The other is a reincarnating individual who made a pact with an EPE-Extraplanar Entity-back in the 1800's for his wife's life. It all worked out as planned-but he was hit by a carriage on the way back. The EPE raised him back, but he lost his memory...he has the power to come back from the dead constantly, but he loses his memory every time. This results in him being a cheery, friendly, excellent individual. He met 82 when she was still frail and in her padded cell and became fast friends with her.

Ramiel still holds on with only his legs, though he has leaned forward, arms drooping limply. Andre clings with all six limbs to the spider, blinking to try and keep himself awake.

You snap awake, clenching your hands tightly, suddenly remembering that you could fall off. The spider under you twitches at your sudden movements. Looking around, you can see that Andre and Ramiel are still asleep. Clara's eyes are the size of saucers, her fingers still clasping desperately at the hairs of the spider, still whispering to herself, and visibly shivering. You realize that she cannot sleep; she must have been awake for...how long have you been...?

Turning your head, you see the bloody-red surface of mars, its two satellites silhouetted against its bright surface. You seem to be cruising past it. Looking straight ahead, you see a large chunk of rock, seemingly riddled with craters and tunnels. On the "top" of the planetoid, you can see the twisting, climbing spires of some strange stone building on the shores of what looks like a vast dark lake, a somber mirror on the surface.

The broodlings glide smoothly to the surface of the planet. You feel yourself enter the friction of atmosphere, a strange sensation, and the spiders gradually touch down on the shores of the vast lake. Droplets of water seem to have lifted themselves out of the water at various points, giving the lake the look of a rainstorm frozen in time, small crystals of (is it water?) suspended over the glassy surface, with not even a wave.

The building itself is a labyrinthine-looking monolithic structure, a honeycomb of angular windows, spires, catwalks and balconies. There is an obvious front entrance, a rounded gaping darkness, like a clean-cut cave mouth.
The spiders shake you off, standing around you and chirring to themselves or each other. One prods you gently with a needly leg.

You stand shakily, blood slicking over your skin. Though there is air to breath, there is no wind at all, your coat hanging limply at your side. Clara moves towards you, tripping and falling, then pulling herself to her feet and burying her face against you.
    "So dark...." she whispers.
"It's okay," you say, patting her head. "Everyone else alright?"
Andre nods; Ramiel draws his sword, looking around at the static lake.

"I agree," Andre says. "The sooner we get out of here, the less danger we're in, and the less vulnerable the team on Earth is."

You see nothing. At least, noting overtly threatening. Your steps echo as you walk into the library, Clara clutching your arm. There are shelves, and books, but of drastically varying sizes, from knee-high shelves with stamp-sized books to books taller than you are. The far wall of this first large chamber is covered with plates of etched glass, covered in a lettering you cannot read. A table lies nearby, strewn with normal-sized papers and a quill/inkpot. There are a multitude of exits, and a second floor. The entire thing is dimly lit, seemingly from an ambient light with no source. Everything is very still, and very quiet.
"Miss Helen..." Clara says. "I'm frightened."
"I too am uneasy," Andre says. "There is nothing right with this place. We do well not to linger."

You round the corner to find Clara standing in this circular chamber. The stone is a darker, almost blue-gray hue, with a sharp contrast between the sandstoney brown of the passageway you're coming from. Near the center of the room, Clara sits, leaning back on her hands.

She is looking up at a featureless sphere of blackness. Looking at it, it seems to be a 2-dimensional hole pinned up in 3-dimensional space, so featureless are its edges. It sits unmoving, and yet you feel your stomach churn with nausea to look upon it. You can feel it, thinking slowly and carefully, examining the creatures it finds near itself. Moreso than thought, you can feel chilling waves of malevolence rolling off of it like smoke. You sink to your knees, vision blurring slightly.

Your blood slips out your wrists, extruding two pseudopods with which to look around.
"What is-? Jesus! Arg! JESUS! What is that?!" Garfield says.

Hey, not complaining really. Just annoyed that you went right for the robo-loli because you knew she was the only one we cared about. But shit happens, this is why I was against bringing Clara to a place beyond reason and time.

I rather enjoy innocent lolibots who can shoot radioactive people with antitank guns and still be cheerful afterwards because they were "obviously bad, so it's okay."

This is not the time to reason. Grab her. Run away. Back to the main room. Scream for the others to come help.

Grab Clara and book it out of there post haste. Tell Garfield to try and form a shield from outside influences around our brain inside our skull.

Subject 6 is fine, but I was making choo-choo noises. Multiple people were actively saying "Hey, let's make sure we keep an eye on Clara after the trauma thing and her wandering around like that."

I work until 10, so I'll be a little bit late. I'll also have to leave a little bit earlier than normal because I have stuff I need to get up for in the morning.

But regardless, excellent work as always. This sidequest is really fun, and I partially instigated it myself by the whole questioning about the space library.

At least that's what I like to think.

    P.S. I love you too :3

The train has to come along every now and then otherwise we wouldn't get anything done. StonerDM rarely uses it, and I'm pretty sure I can count the number of times he has on one hand.

It would have felt much less arbitrary if we were absorbed by the unearthly script on the parchment only to be jolted out of reading it an hour later by Ramiel, or something. Taking the loli for plot purposes is not a mistake, but having us aware and "able" to act yet not able to actually follow through on those actions for plot reasons is where it broke down.

Still good overall Stoner, don't let me get to you! Love the quest!
