It has been 28 days. It is now the sixth month, and the weather is about as placid as you've ever seen. The trees of the forest are painted in the most vibrant colors, and the sky is rarely cloudy. The Flashweed crop has been harvested and stored, though in the absence of a sizable press, the oil must be extracted in a simpler way, usually involving your great weight. The wheat crop is almost ready for harvest, and with the new granary up by the sized-up mill, there is no lack of storage space.
Following a rotation plan worked up weeks in advance, the Flashweed is being replaced in the fields with a type of bean called a Tama, resembling a pea, but reddish and about twice as large. With that, the soil's nutrients will be restored, and the next crop will be even more fruitful. In addition to the beans, Bem's latest trip to Grennet netted enough metal silverware for the whole town, as well as two more cows, a bull, and carts for them all to pull. Inside the carts were packed various miscellaneous items, mostly inexpensive food products and schoolbooks of various kinds, as well as some metal bars the blacksmiths can use instead of re-forging old tools and scraps.
Eron agreed to take a trip to Fain, as it would only put him out of contact with the town for two days, so he could manage without too much trouble. He obtained, at a discount, two cats, two dogs, and a small wagon to pull them. Upon seeing them getting along so well together, Sahl asked if he'd used the evil eye on them. The only response was a grin. |
