    The rest of the day passes uneventfully, and you head to your tent to sleep early, knowing that the next leg of the campaign will be very long, at least to your perception. The next morning you wake up to find Jayne curled up against you, the second time that has happened since you extended her the invitation to treat your tent as hers. In the morning camp you see very little happening, the forts expansion complete, the prisoners gone. You walk the perimeter of the central section of the fort, in one training field Janos and Kaitlyn are practicing with their new bows, in the other, Wulf and Lena sit crosslegged, facing each other, one with bolts of lightning arcing between his fingers, the other sustaining a bright-white orb of energy, both deep in concentration. You think to yourself that it may be interesting to talk with either of the couples, or even see Kyria at the top of the central tower, where you are almost positive the dwarf is still waiting, facing east, as she had the third watch. Or, you could busy yourself with some other minutiae until your command staff meeting.

    You walk the circuit again, this time stopping behind Janos and Kaitlyn "Enjoying the fresh air?" you ask the couple, causing Kaitlyn to jump slightly.

    "Very much" Janos replies, knocking another arrow to his bow. Which is, you must admit, a fine piece of craftsmanship, the slight recurve at either end of the longbow bulkier than needed, to accomodate for two sculpted talons, the rest of the beasts arms ever so lightly etched into the wood, ending at the thick center of the bow, where the arrow rest has been carved out into the shape of a dragons head, albeit a truncated one.

    "You made short work of your bows, I see." you remark, noticing Kaitlyns plainer, yet equally well made bow. "I trust you are getting along fine with the men so far?" you ask, hoping to not run into any snags in that department.

    "We had nothing else to do." Kaitlyn qualifies, taking another shot, and hitting the center of her mark yet again.

    "The soldiers we encountered were amiable enough." Janos replies "I had to explain the truth behind a few rumors to some, it will be interesting to see how those tidbits end up twisted." Janos chuckles, before adding another arrow to his looser grouping of hits.

    At about noon that day you are sitting in your command tent as the staff files in and takes their seats. You recap your mission for the benefit of the mercenaries, as well as your plans for after crossing the greyrun. The question that seems to be most preeminent in your captains minds is, what route will you be taking to the Uurlanthian border, and how fast the march will be (from the captains not fully aware of Degrians success.)

    Just a quick question, are we planning on taking lost conflux in the week we have?
    The pic doesn't seem to be conclusive one way or another and I'm assuming this is what our basic plan is

    "The march will be the easy part, as my Head Engineer, Degrian, with the help of Captain Esfelda, has created enough automated wagons to put our march on par with all but the fastest of cavalry. We will advance directly ahead, skirting the outer edges of the Inland Swamps to avoid the enemy fort that would other wise block our path." you inform your command staff, nodding towards Degrian and Kyria as you do so.

    All of your dwarves are noticably offput by the mention of the swamp, though it is Gaius that speaks up "That swamp is a bad place, more than a night or two and I can garuntee we will take casualties passing through even its outside edges. Is there no other path around the fort?" he asks.

    Rubbing his temples Janos replies "Not one that gives as much assurance that we will not be spotted by an enemy patrol, or that risks endangering the duchies neutrality."

    Blackbird seems to be the only member of the staff that is actually, pleased, at the prospect of passing through the swamp "Will I be able to lead my band into the swamp?" he asks, hope in his voice.

    We were going to cross on the northern part of the river above Fort Conflux and I believe there are natural crossings we can use to get the wagons across. That and our earth elementalism now that we can sculpt the earth and make decent bridges with enough time.

    In a swamp full of dangerous creatures and likely lots of poisons? Yes there is. Especially for people not used to swamps or anything like that. Blackleaf may be fine but the rest of his band won't be and we need them in tip top shape since we're fighting for a week without any back up or support. Do remember we can't leave injured men in a spot to recover now since we will have no real base camp. Any injuries will take up permanent space on our wagons.

    "I will do my best to teach my raiders to craft of elixers and ungents, I doubt that I will have time to teach the complex art to any others, if my raids are to be successful."

    At that, the meeting winds to a close, Blackbird heading off at speed to begin preparing his best men for the swamps, you expect, and Jayne heading off with the mercenary cavalry captains, from the sound of it, all of them planning on visiting the forests themselves, in search of herbs and plants of use. as the tent empties you make to leave, you find your way blocked by Laelith, Sansa, and Kyria, all of them looking mischievously upset with you. "What have you done to our poor, sweet, innocent Jayne?" the raven-haired ringleader asks.

    "and what special treatments have you extended her, but not us poor, common ladies?" Kyria asks, her face twitching and jumping in its attempt to leave the stoic mask of displeasure.

    Actually we might as well wait until after this campaign. They're not going to have enough time to train effectively to use their abilities and we shouldn't burden them with more then they'll already have to deal with. At most, let's look into our medical staff for elementalism powers and get them life training since that always is good but I think military wise we should wait.

    Oh, and we need to tell the merc captains, especially the Ghosts, about elementalism.
    Uurlanth is beginning to show signs of integrating elementalists into their combat doctrine (refer to the air elementalist used against one of the other maniple commanders) and so we cannot be sure if the Uurlanth garrisons, or the hunter groups that will be sent after us, won't contain them.
    The mercs need to know what to look for, and make elementalists high-priority targets.

    It doesnt take too terribly to round up the new elementalists, a short speech informs them of their abilities, and the rapidity with which the end of this Second age seems to be approaching. Luckilly, Lena is more or less teaching herself at this point, allowing Laelith to take over training the cadre of elementalists, personally tutoring the fire elementalists. The others have the gloves to share, and where possible a more experienced elementalist or yourself to tutor them. All told, that only takes half the day for their first lesson, at which point you are confident that they will be able to learn the rest as you did.

    It takes much less time to brief the Ghosts on the existence of elementalists, mages and the like. Though they are doubtful of their ability to discern them from any normal soldier, captain Helmenu assures you that he will do his utmost to kill such men as quickly as he would an enemy officer.

    The last few days in camp pass quickly, as there is not much preparation left to be done. Finally, with a mighty heave from Jaynes wing, the maniple sets off for Uurlanth, tightly packed into the auto-wagons, covering their ears or singing loud, baudy marching tunes to overcome the rhythmic clanking of the wagons.

    After two days of riding, during which the only truly interesting event was the rearmost wagon being rushed by an angry troop of plains badgers, and Kyria and her best soldiers getting badgerskin cloaks out of the escapade. The day before you reach the swamp, however, an unexpected party approaches your van, where you ride between Jayne and Sansa. As the party approaches, you recognize Vohzd Lennis, and 49 riders, all of them bearing the look of veteran worriers.

All of them with a bandolier of javelins across their backs, straightsabers in the same fashion as Bellatrixs at their hips, and strange notched sticks strapped to their horses sides, the notches looking to be just wide enough to accommodate one of their javelins, with a curved end, where the javelins butt would rest, you assume.

    The Empire encourages the usage of mercenaries, so if we call them mercenaries in our reports, then we can sidestep the whole political issue.

    "Indeed it has, friend. My son and heir returned to us from his Long Ride shortly after you and I freed the ghorat. When I heard of your leaving your fort I gathered up my firstriders to settle our debts." he informs you, a hint of pride seeping into his voice at his mentioning of his son.

    Sorry to doublepost, but I just thought of something:

    As far as Uurlanth and the forces at the fort in our way know, the Plainsmen aren't allied with our maniple.
    Perhaps we should have the Kharynchek take the northern path and keep the fort's attention, and we meet back up with them at the Greyrun River.
    This way, the fort's attention is focused even more away from the swamp, and the Kharynchek avoid the dangers of the swamplands. We won't have to dip into our maniple's carefully calculated rations, and avoid the risk of the nomads getting sick and using up some of our medicines.

    A tunnel is a terrible idea. Instead, open up a narrow but deep gorge in the center of the riverbed; that'll drop the water level except at a very narrow location.     Seconding this. As soon as this patrol is taken care of, we need to move on Lost Conflux with all speed, hopefully for a night-time attack.

    Once the fortress is taken, we destroy it and then start raiding the countryside. That's when Blackbird can go on his raids.

    We also need to plan out our route, and set up places and times where we'll meet back up with the orc, so that he can unload collected loot with us, and we can get his recon data.

    About an hour later you are at the front of one wedge, the Kemnios swiftriders opposite you, lances held at the ready. Off to the right flank Vohzd Lennins men are milling about, eager to strike, and to your left flank Kyrias rangers stand ready to strike. The enemy cavalry crests the hill, a shout of dismay emits from them as you give the order to charge. Seconds later a withering salvo of bolts chews into the Uurlanthi cavalry, compelling them to continue ahead and away from the rain of steel. As the swiftriders level their lances, a rapid salvo scythes into the light cavalries opposite flank aiming them perfectly towards your small detachments hammer.

    You leave the scene of the massacre to stike at your first major target, Lost Conflux. A days march (a few hours fast mounted advance) from the city you halt to scan the area. About half a days ride from the fort is the city of Lost Conflux, encased in a decrepit wooden wall in some places, unwalled mostly from the west and south, though your scouts report there are old walls in those directions that have simply been built around. The lands gentle slope towards the greyrun leaves the area hilly, but with no real mounds in the earth to watch from. The only thing that surprises you is the small stone wall surrounding Lord Blentus' manor in the city, his golden bridge banners gaudy even from afar.     How close is it to nightfall? Is it near midday?

    Here's my plan: We come in from the north, get the heavy repeaters readied and the mangonel ranged in, but stay out of return-fire range.
    Some of the Ghosts and hunters will go and range in on the fort.
    We'll ignore the town for now, but to keep the enemy occupied with it, we'll have one of the heavy repeaters and the rangers take potshots.

    Our main attack will be at night, with the usage of NV paste.
    We will knock the walls of the fortress down and the ranged units will provide rolling fire in front of the heavy infantry as they charge in, followed by medium and light infantry (mercs) to protect their flanks.

    Once we've taken the fort, we'll turn our attention to the city, destroying any and all war-making capacity that they have.

    Maybe we could send in men to sneak into the manor, Slay the occupants, and ransack it before setting it on fire in the night.
    Units from the fort may move out to assist in the firefighting/ohgodshavetheshinies and that is where we strike with the bulk.
