    So, Battlefleet Gothic.

I'm looking at making some models for the game. Sadly I don't know anything about the actual game and I don't have anyone to help me learn the game.

What should I be aware of when I'm making the little models? I'd be going for either Tau, Necron, Eldar or ... well. I could use any /rules/, the entire game is pretty much "Counts As", right?

Do I need to model on specific guns or shields or anything?
What should my fleet consist of (I'm guessing generally 1-2 big ships, several medium sized ones and a dozen smaller ones)?
Do I need to make them the "right" size or is close enough good enough?
Can I make round ships or should they be like the Imperial ones?
What bases do I use? How high on the stands do I make them?

Battlefleet Gothic was something I had a lot of interest in when it first came out
So I saved up some money (took a while)
    Headed down the local GW

Unless agreed otherwise WYSIWYG is mostly there, so cruiser with broadside weapon batteries must look like a cruiser with broadside weapon batteries, but a BFG fleet is much much cheaper than a 40k/Fantasy army. When it comes to game mechanics, base size is the most important thing. 10+ HP ships should be put on large bases.

Games Workshop/Forgeworld sites have Eldar/Tau ships in them

WYSIWYG? Cool, so I'll just read over the rules and pick a faction. Throw up a list and read the descriptions and just sort of make do? Sounds easy-ish... Do the factions have any particular playing style that is attached to them?

I'm really interested in making my own models for this. I think it should be ... it's not going to be easy, but I think I could really make something cool. This type of thing is my type of thing. If that makes sense.

    My two cents about BFG:

    Chaos...Fucking...ROCKS

Currently playing an a 40k campaign that uses both BFG and the Tabletop. My crushing Battlefleet victories have caused the Blood Angels player to turn renegade and worship Khorne, because he doesn't want to lose all his fleets to my unstoppable Armada.

Craftworld Eldar ships look a bit sturdier (as they should, they get 5+ armour instead of paper 4+ of corsairs), but the single sail in the Dragonships looks a bit out of place. Flame of Asuryan looks good, but is more expensive by 8 pounds.

Until they finish their move in base contact with a ship and board that motherfucker. I've seen Space Marine Frigates kill Heavy Cruisers in boarding actions. Then there's the fun and games of teleport boarding actions - WITH TERMINATORS.

That said, these are the ONLY advantages a Space Marine fleet gets, so it really is in his best interest to leverage them as much as possible.

    >Anyone find it odd that the Chaos ships are based on the original plastic Imperial battleships from Space Fleet while the Imperial ships are the later metals?

No because we've read the chaos fleet fluff.

Chaos ships ARE the older models of ships from the Imperial Fleet that couldn't stand to get motballed and overlooked in favour of the newer ships and turned to chaos to prove that they still had it.

That's why both sides can get Grand Cruisers, and that there's an Imperial List out there where they can take certain models of chaos cruiser.

Yeah the different factions each have a general theme.

Imperials are all about Broadsides, using their heavy prows for protection on the approach. Generally the only weapons they ahve pointed forwards are Torpedoes or a Nova cannon (basically space artillery). Can do a decent carrier fleet too if that takes your fancy.

Chaos are similar though they act as more general gunships, losing the prow armour for more speed and general a little longer range. They can also be used as a pretty formidable carrier fleet.

Both chaos and imperials "Workhorse" ships are their cruisers and its perfectly viable to build a fleet of nothing but cruisers and battle/heavy cruisers.

Space marines are like imperials but with less gun and more speed and armour to put their boarding advantage into practice.

Eldar generally rely on their smaller ships, but they are quite fast and the most maneuverable (they have a special rule that lets them move twice in a turn, before and after they shoot). they're glass cannons though and their exact speed depends on their orientation to the sun.

Tyranids are a little different, they' re the only fleet where you have to take your biggest ships to get access to the smaller ones (other fleets work the other way), they're a slower fleet with short range shooting. But they're the kings of boarding actions, a Nid cruisers can take on a Space marines largest ship with even odds. They're also good at flooding the table with Ordnance if you choose too.

Orks are like a slower more random version of imperials, and chaos.

Necrons are the fastest, thoughest and have fairly good fire power. they give up a lot more of victory points if you manage to kill them though.

BFG is about the only GW game I would still buy models from GW for...if I had to.

If I could get unbuilt ones for cheap off ebay I would.

For scratch building/kitbashing Orks and Tyranids are the only easy options. Orks from ... well anything you have to hand, and tyranids kitbashed from 40k nid stuff bought for as cheap as possible.

Imperial, Chaos and Eldar are a bit harder to scratch build well, especially if you actually like the style of the original models and want to get as close to that as possible.

At the end of the day ofcourse the actual ship models are only markers. Technically you don't need them there at all, it's just easier to atleast know what class of ship it is if there is a model.

Everything in the rules is drawn to the stem of the flying base so really as long as the base is the right size and has the center point marked you can use any ship you want.

Of course it does look nicer on the table if all the ships are kinda to the same scale as each other.

As a Chaos and occasional imperial player, I can attest to the fact that facing down an imperial fleet to the front is a very, very scary prospect.

Thankfully though chaos weapons batteries are very long ranged, and their carriers are great - although against imperials any carrier space is needed to cope with torpedoes.

    6cm for a Cruiser.
    3-4cm for a Light Cruiser.
    2-3cm for a Frigate.

    Yep that's how it works.

Battleships use the GW large flying base (55-60mm), everything else, Cruisers, Escorts and I'm pretty sure Defences too use the smaller GW flying base (25-30?mm).

Past that as long as you say "this is my battleship, these are my cruisers, these are my escorts"...and let the opponent look at the stats for them when asked it's all fine.

To be honest most of the models GW produced only comform to a very basic level of showing what weapons are on the ship, and for some like Orks they didn't bother at all.

As long as you pick one size for each class and kinda stick to it so at least that basic information is obvious to the opponent, and yourself, everything should be fine.

I just measured my Chaos fleet and got these approximates:

    Battleship (120mm)
    Cruiser (90-100mm)
    Escort (30mm)

Light Cruisers would go in at about 50-60mm.

Of course with a whole galaxy of different ship yards no ship is likely to be exactly the same size so you don't need to be at all precise, just different enough to know what class it is for shooting and finding them on your fleet list.

I'd not seen that picture in ages and I thought upwards of 500m sounded a little big for the battery guns of an imperial cruiser.

Mind you if it is meaning from the front of the airlock to the back of the battery bay then 500m+ seems fine.

Going by a very rough scale conversion the battery turrets on the Chaos ships come in at about 200-250m, but I would assume a lot more workings below the turrets. Meanwhile on Imperial ships all the workings are horizontal.

Well, keep in mind that the Cobra is 3km long... and that it's front prow is about a third as tall as it is long so that gives us 1km.
Now, compare the gunbarrels from the cruiser sprue with a cobra's prow, they DO look about half as big as that thing. Of course some of it is recessed into the gunport so it's iffy, but yeah: Big gun is BIG.

Oooh, that's very nice and the shapes are clean enough for it to be chaos or imperial without much trouble.

Most scratch builds I plan out end up looking like Ork ships regardless of what I actually wanted them to be when I started.

Getting a kinda assembly line esq style that looks good and can be built without too much work is harder than it seems.

I should have thought about using stuff like circuit boards...a lot of the time when I think of scratch build I think starting with a piece of wood/syrene/metal and working 100% from scratch as opposed to looking for bits and scraps that would do the job.

That is a thing of beauty. I would have been limited to flat disc shaped ships if I had not seen the possibilities. What's the plans for it? Are you going to paint all over it or keep some of the board showing? Is there any particular painting traps when dealing with circuit boards that I should be aware of?

That's why scenarios make things more interesting.

The necrons can't speed in, blow away a couple of ships and speed out for the win.

And on the other hand even if the non-necron player pulls off an amazing string of luck and blows away a few Necron ships they can still complete their mission.

Oh and the Necron player better be using escorts.

So yeah as long as it isn't a victory points battle with a maxed fleet of Necron Battleships/Cruisers everything should be fine.

Same thing goes for Eldar really, if there is no objective other than cripple/destroy enemy ships and disengage then a propperly tailored Eldar fleet can be nigh on unbeatable, especially if the terrain is good for them

To be honest that is one thing I find the most saddening about the fact that I only had GW stores to play in for much of the last 15-16 years.

I recently parted company with GW, for the most part, after getting sick of their nonsense and price hikes, and I exposed myself to the wonderfully vast and creative world of Wargaming propper.

Thinking back to when I was a little kid and first started model building I had so many crazy ideas, but with having to follow GW store rules of what models could be used and stuff that the creativity was kinda left out in the cold.

Now I'm older and wiser...well maybe not wiser but I've got a more open and independent mind set.

effective against ships with shields down in the same

That is sadly one of the problems with Orks.

A lot of players feel that the basic original rules just don't capture the theme right at all.

Having a lot of random number of shot weapons doesn't make them more Orky, it just makes them imperial ships with crap weapons.

Then really weird things like Ork Warlords not giving their ship a Leadership boost.

It took me a while to get what the Traktor Field upgrade did and then I realised that it was there to make it easier to get into base contact with stuff.

Damn, a Goff BattleKroozer with Claws, Mega-Nob Boarding parties and Turbo-Boosters basically zooms forwards at 4d6 a turn, before colliding with the enemy front line and attempting to grapple on.
If it does so, then it boards as well as Space Marines.
Although you'd need to pick 5 more squadrons just to field that one ship though.

    Still.

The point cost of ork escorts is also lowered.

Orks' pros is autopassing AAF and succeeding in ramming actions with one leadership check. Statistically this makes them better rammers than the Imperial navy even with lower leadership, since IN takes two checks to succeed in ramming.
    >> Anonymous 02/18/11(Fri)08:27 No.13945763
The Clanz list does seem a step in the right direction for Orks.

Instead of random strength weapons having lots of ships with different weapons as the Mek boyz of each ship try to out do each other...and of course the different Kaptains try to get the ship kitted out in a way they like.

Heck perhaps even randomly generating the ships equipment...weapons, armour, hitpoints, shields, turrets, etc...

Certainly I'd never expect two Ork ships to be exactly the same, unless it was a squadron with like minded Meks.

Seems to be that the Clans list allows you to get rid of 15cm heavy gunz.

Dethdeala with power fields and looted lances is 330 points, and

    Type/Hits: Battleship/12
    Speed: 20 cm
    Turns: 45*
    Armour:6+prow/5+
    Shields: 3
    Turrets: 3

    Port/Starboard Gunz - 30 cm - d6+4 - L/R
    Port/Starboard Lance Battery - 30 cm - 2 - L/R
    Dorsal Launch Bay - Fighta-bommaz/Assault Boats - d3+1 - NA
    Prow Gunz - 45 cm - d6+6 - Front
    Prow Bombardment Cannon - 30 cm - 6 Front

Soopa Enginez - 4d6 on AAF

The original was 275 points with two shields and S6 15 cm heavy gunz in place of lances, those barely ever hit anyone.

I didn't mean Warlords were bad, but yeah it's just odd that they can like "take the best crew from their fleet" onto a ship that crew has no experience in.

A Warlord would still be better at shouting orders and motivating his crew to work faster than a regular captain though, I'd class that as worth +1 leadership.

It is one of the most minor ... issues I have with Orks though. Compared to the whole fleet not really feeling very Orky.
    >> Anonymous 02/18/11(Fri)08:46 No.13945882
    >>13945860

Ork ships are continous works in process, it makes sense that the ship that they're in makes no difference for the vast majority.

Presumably the Warlord would keep his Meks at his side, and those are the guys who matter when it comes to the systems. And for even them, it's instinctual.

Not even that. They are a Learn The System list. They're a display cabinet list. Necrons look like easy-mode when it comes to scratch building them. Glad to hear that Shrouds and Escorts are considered a lower powered choice. I like those units a lot.

    >>13951675
Just dropped by the hardware store. Picked up washers, plasterboard screws, Araldite and epoxy putty. Your bases are .27 cents a piece (US?), mine work out to be ~.60 cents NZ. Damn.

Maybe... I run Linux and I can't remember what Vassal requires. I've never used Vassal although I think I've downloaded some client or something for it. You'd have to hold my hand throughout the entire process. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even a tripfag.

just so you know, the smaller base that most ships use is 32mm diameter. though marking that distance and measuring to there on your bases should be fine if you don't want to have to redo them all. Height doesn't matter for the rules at all.

Also that was $8 AUS (or slightly over I can't remember exactly) I got them from the UK.

Washers are a good idea though i'll have to see if I can get some the right size.

    >>13954307
Damn again. I browsed around the web for the correct base sizes and read that the sizes were 40mm and 60mm. The top washer is 33mm, I could use two of those washers... shit, that doesn't work. Wait, as it is it works, well, 1mm over sized, I'll pain the bottom washer a different colour and use the top washer for measuring.

$8 AUS is pretty good. I'm not sure that paying almost twice as much is worth the added strength in the stand but it's too late now.

yeah theres a 40mm round base GW uses, but its just a normal base not one of the clear flying bases.
1mm won't make a difference. people won't even know unless you tell them or they decide to be anal about things and measure.

Took apart a digital camera from early 2000's, little calculator/PA from the 90's and a TV.

The glass lenses looks pretty cool, pity they are all different sizes. Couple of interesting circuit boards. TV has really complex resistors on it, but it looks a bit jumbled for what I perceive as Necrons.

How do Tau play? I got the sense that they were mostly dependent on barrages of their missiles, going by the fact that they tend to have a lot of missile systems and that their missiles are more maneuverable than others. Is it pretty much all about dem torpedoes?
    >> Alpharius 02/19/11(Sat)04:09 No.13956847
    >>13956712
Just from looking at the rules, it seems like they play similarly to how they could play in 40k; Niche units involving various races. Ships with reasonably long range, reasonably high strength attacks reasonably priced (Air Caste), a couple of expensive, interesting, highly destructive tarpit(?) ships (Demiurg), cheap merchant class vessels (no idea/distractions?) and high defence, slow, 360 degree powerhouses(?) (Kroot).

Someone who actually plays will be able to tell you more, but on paper they look incredibly fun to play.

The GW website has the pdfs for free download. Look under the Specialist Games header.

i imagine it could be good for Necrons, for the escorts I;m sure just a simple crescent of Plasticard with plates of circuit board on top and your done. add pyramids to taste.
All those little surface mount resistors and stuff make good detailing for ships.

According to the website there's a version of vassal designed for Linux, so it should be much of a problem. Once you start the program up, tell it to open this module:

So, here's a tentative experiment with the new Ork Clan rules

    Warlord 2 Rerolls in
Gorbags Revenge + Assault Ship and Mega Armoured Boarding Parties + Evil Suns clan

    5 Evil Sunz Ravager Escorts
    5 Evil Sunz Onslaught Gunships
    2 Terror Ships

1 Warlords with 2 ReRolls in
Ammer Battlekroozer with Looted Torpedoes and Tellyporta

    4 Deathskulls Savages
    4 Deathskulls Savages
    4 Deathskulls Ravagers

    Total: 2000pts

The Deathskull escorts all get looted Torpedoes and the Savages replace their heavy gunz with Lances. Admittedly, they're still 15cm range, but you can't have everything. The Tellyporta will probably pay for itself if the Ammer kroozer remembers to keep behind the escorts and stays moderately out of trouble.
The Battleship is going to murderise someone though.

    And you get this.

Won't work all too well if there's nothing that's plain white or neutral grey in the pic (so put a bit of paper somewhere where it can be cropped out afterwards if the motif&background lack anything such), or for the most atrocious cases of tinting, but it generally gets the job done.

Slaughter is so fast that it will get separated from your other ships, seeing as you only have one, you could remove it and the CSM crew of the Devastation, and replace those with an Acheron (the best 45 cm broadside of all chaos cruisers or heavy cruisers) or a Hades (more overall firepower, better prow-on).

    Looks fantastic, suitably Orky.

I'm not overly happy with the Necron ships I've made. They're fine in a pinch but certainly not cast worthy and having a bunch of unique ships would be acceptable for most races (required for Orks), Necrons just seems like the ships would be almost exactly the same. Tau would suffer the same fate.

Brainstorm for Scratch Built BFG. Feel free to contribute.

Necrons: We see a lot of crescent shapes. Using the inscriptions from various 40k illustrations a new shape could be used. Also Egyptian Ankhs, Pharaoh Headdress shapes, Various Crucifixes. Dyson Spheres would suit their 360 degree weapon thing. Currently experimenting with a pseudo Dyson structure.

Eldar: Space Turtles ala Discworld. Mega Project: Build a Craftworld as BFG terrain.

Orks: Attach enough rokkits to something and it will fly.

Chaos: Daemon possessed ships. Or just big Daemons. Bonus points if Skeleton Jelly's "My brain is full of tiny animals" is referenced. If you want to get anime over it, use the Antispirals Face Ship Things from TTLGL.

    Apt Captcha is apt.

I just oiled up a golf ball (not an uncommon statement on 4chan, but possibly a first for /tg/ related).

It is 4cm in diameter, which puts it in the Cruiser Class. Guess I'm making a Harvest Ship, although that implies that a Tomb Ship would be 10cm in diameter. Very large. The first layer of putty is on it, I'll build up the layers with detail before cutting parts off (carefully adding placed for pins as needed. I'm thinking really big, heavy pins are needed), pinning the segments together when I assemble it. Obviously some segments will be discarded to show the inside of the sphere. The segments will need to be in small parts so I can cast them without warping them.

As long as nothing warps, this should work.

    >Comes across the Endurance and Endevour class light cruisers

Fuck me. These things are INSANE, the Endevour is basically a pocket Gothic Cruiser for 60 points less, although the Endevour is a bit more sensible.

The Havoc and Viper Escorts are pretty crazy as well. One has more gun than a Gladius Escort, the other is a Cobra with 3 torpedoes.
    >> Anonymous 02/21/11(Mon)09:46 No.13982497
    >>13982439

Endeavour and Endurance were already official, they're in Armada.

The non-Bakka versions got their point cost dropped to 110 points to be balanced with the 3-turret Bakka versions.

As for the Gothic comparison, an Endurance's broadside strength is 2 batteries and 2 lances, this isn't going to supplant Gothic since lances are roughly worth 3 batteries each due to being unaffected by gunnery chart and ignoring armour. A better comparison would be a Tau Merchant class.

Sow hat is the typical points-total used by most BFG players? Grand fleets of a half dozen cruisers, a score of escorts and a battleship or two, or just a few cruisers and a handful of escorts?

Though I have a feeling it varies much more than 40k or such.

Personally I would say 1000-1500pts is a fine sized game. 3000-4000+ and games probably start to take a very long time...I've never actually owned a fleet that big though.

One variation I do like however, and it is something which works well with low points games to add an interesting edge, and is good if you have a few people with nothing to do or people who don't really know the game well.

Work out roughly equal fleets then give each cruiser or squadron of escorts to one person.

Because of the order system in BFG team games become really tactical as different people might think they have a better case to be first to roll for special orders.

Stick a time limit on how long the teams have to discuss things, it is supposed to be a pressing combat situation after all, and watch as it all falls appart if someone doesn't take charge or the person in charge makes a mistake.

Also add in things like individual victory points or objectives per player and you could see allies deciding not to rush quite so quickly to the aid of the person who argued to roll for orders first and failed blowing it for everyone.

500-750 is good for a really quick game or when you are just learning.

Lets you take 2-3 cruisers and a squadron or two of escorts depending on what you pick, certainly enough to have a bit of everything which means you can play different scenarios and things.

Here is some excellent ork tactica: http://www.tacticalwargames.net/archive/bfgmag/warprift29.pdf

In summary, orks are good if you play to their strengths, but their strengths aren't necessarly intuitive for orks. Their escorts are a bit naff, some of their battleships are a trap and they're no good with guns. What you want is as many warlords as possible: stick one on a battleship and the rest on kill kroozers. They can easily board any ship to death. Most of the rest of your points should be spent on terror ships so you can fling ludicrious ammounts of fighta bombers at people.

Drown people in ordinance. Gut them with ork mobs on their own ships. That's how orks work best in BFG.
    >> Anonymous 02/21/11(Mon)17:15 No.13986993
i dont play them but they have good front armour and good front guns, they start with lots of hits, and are better at boarding than imperials ( equal with chaos ) fighter bombers, escorts are getting better across the board, orc ones are getting upgrades as well

before the new fleet came out i bum raped orcs by keeping range and concentrating fire on isolated ships i made sure if it was gonna be in range of my ships i would either crip it or make it brace

While Chaos can have the same sorts of boarding bonus as orks, Orks are much more efficient at it. Chaos get a natural +1 bonus, but to get more than that they need a chaos lord (50 points) and then a mark of Khorne (20 points) to double their boarding value. Orks just need a warboss (40 points) to double their boarding value then they can buy mega armoured boarding parties (15 points) for that final +1. 70 points for chaos but only 55 points for orks - and the ork cruisers have more hit points so they have a higher boarding value naturally!

Mark of Nurgle is a killer though. Those ships need to be bombed to death.

war bosses dont do that anymore, instead you get a free one per 500 points, he adds +2 to any one boarding roll, comes with a free re roll an all, can make the crew goffs for 20 points, gives +1 to boarding(for+2 total) and +1 ld for ramming

These lists are in addition to those already in GW site.

So if you play the Ork Pirates fleet without any battleships or battlekroozers from the main rulebook or the Armageddon invasion fleet from Armada, your warlords work like described there.

The Clans list on the other hand is the one that offers access to stuff like looted lances and Goff crews. It was one of Andy Chambers' projects that was now finished by the rules committee.

You know, I should someday get around to painting the Chaos ships I got when the game first came out. My bad choice of color scheme makes it hard though.

So what's the general theme of Tau fleets? From a quick overview they seem to have cheap crappy ships with ordnance that's accurate but peters out.

they're similar to how they are on the table top. A focus on long range firepower. Like imperials many of their ships have more heavily defended prows. Unlike imperials though most of their fire power points forwards rather than in broadsides.
They also have the best Ordnance in the game. almost always in greater quantities than an enemy fleet.

they're on the slow end though and not as maneuverable so if you can get amongst them you can generally wreak havoc (especially if yous tart boarding them), But its an IF you get there.
