29 KB ARMORED CORE QUEST: THE MAKING OF PART THE SECOND. AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)19:28 No.18743876
    Hey guys, it's AC-Guy.

Back by popular demand, we're doing another crunch development/behind the scenes peek at what makes AC-Quest work.

Regular thread should b up at the normal time, in 3-4 hours, but I figured I'd take the opportunity to put up this thread as a bonus.

Like last time, I'm going to go over some rules issues and clarifications while taking any questions you might have either about the rules or the characters.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)19:40 No.18744044
One thing people have been asking about is hit location.

The short version is this: Whoever rolls it (it varies) low is good FOR THEM. So a low roll by the guy dodging it means it's going to hit something like a secondary weapons system, where as a high roll could mean a head-shot, a reactor breach, and/or pilot kill.

The opposite holds true for the attacker.

Then there's things like HOW GOOD of a hit it is: If they barely make it, then they might hit them in the arm. But if they've gotten multiple degrees of success? The odds of them hitting something more vital goes up.

    >Also, sorry this is slow, I'm working in the bonus thread around other shit I'm doing.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)19:55 No.18744210
    >Huh, might be a bit early for my usual players.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:07 No.18744378
    I'm here.
I don't think anyone expects you this early.
So how about that primal armor?
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:13 No.18744460
Yeah I was wondering, if we make a called shot to the cockpit or head and the enemy has a decent synch score is that an auto kill and if so can we just do that every combat?
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:14 No.18744478
    >>18744378

You mean the fluff or the crunch?

Current Crunch gives it a rating and a health-bar.

The health bar slowly regens over time, but knocking it down means that you can deal direct damage to whatever it is you're shooting it.

The rating is sort of possible bypass: For instance, if it has a rating of 3, that means it could take three effect dice.

So if you get a total of 4d8 damage, the first three would be against the shield, and the last one would hit the target directly.

So lets say that same shield had a health-bar of say.... 15.

If the first three dice were 6,5,7, and the last one was an 8, then the target would take 11 damage and have his shield knocked out.

If the first three were all ones, then the shield would still be up, but that eight would still hit him, since that's the bit that 'punched through'.

Or at least that's my current plan, I'll adjust it after you actually run into some.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:16 No.18744497
    >>18744460

There can be negative repercussions tied to someone's synch score.

In that case, they would be making a save against feedback, which would be harder to make the closer you are to a 100% synch rate.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:22 No.18744594
ok how does combat out of an AC work?
Or is it just d20 and d100 rolls?
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:24 No.18744626
    >>18744594
I think he already said that Synch is replaced with something else, but I would assume that everything else is the same, since both forms of combat are for humanoids.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:25 No.18744644
    >>18744594

Combat rules are pretty much exactly the same as in a mech, difference is scale.

There's no real point in making conversion rules, since human weapons would do fuck all to the machines, and the shockwave from a mech's gun going off would liquify the organs of somebody unprotected too close.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:27 No.18744677
    >>18744626

Synch score is replaced by determination.

Most of the rest is the same, with some obvious exceptions: Guns are much better for people, since they can't do the same high speed maneuvers and have less armor on the whole.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:29 No.18744708
Ah ok I was just asking because in the second to last
update, the one with the bomb, we hit a guy with a wrench but only rolled for that. so what I wanted to know was more along the lines of "if" we would do AC style damage or just the roll on future updates.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:32 No.18744732
    >>18744708

    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:36 No.18744797
oh okay must have overlooked that.
okay then another question, can we learn or become skilled with a weapon?
Or is it just ranged and melee skill?

You can get specific bonuses to certain things: for instance, Elsie has a lower threshold and a bonus to sniping.

But it still ties into her ballistics skill.

I'm watching this (and probably your quest now too) to pick up some ideas for mechanics in my own future ideas. Great job!
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)20:50 No.18744989
Okay another question, with your current system, is there a strict "level up" for our stats and skills or is it more along the lines of "after several times using your saber in scenes you now swing accurately"?
Also, for synch ratio, does that rise and fall based on our characters mindset and current physical condition?
Or is it just from piloting and sims?
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)20:57 No.18745078
    >>18744989

For leveling up.... I'm really thinking that's going to look like Shadowrun's point-buy system by the time I finish making it.

In fact, I'll make a post about that in a minute, so I can explain what the hell I'm talking about.

Synch ratio (and it's sister stat: Determination) can be affected by a lot of things.

For instance, if you're really freaked out or in pain, it's not going to be as high. But if it's something do or die, then it will get a small bump.

These modifiers will rarely be more than 20% your normal synch stat though (so if you clock in at around 50, circumstance might put your between 40 and 60, in the most extreme circumstances).
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)21:06 No.18745188
Right, since somebody asked about leveling up, I'm going to explain how character creation works, in the rules I'm vaguely picturing in my minds eye.

Basically, you get a number of points, and buy certain features, aspects, skills, and feats for your character, with a separate pool for your core.

    Much like Shadowrun.

Parts can only be bought from your current rating and lower during creation. ratings would be kinda like Dark Heresy's 'level' system, where's it's not 'having this much XP makes you level up' but 'having these many powers and abilities means you're now classified as THIS.'

In addition to that, certain specializations can be bought to boost certain things.

This is still pretty vague in my mind, but I think you can see where I'm going with it.

Characters are upgraded VIA XP 99% of the time, and 99% of the time, Cores are upgraded with PARTS bought with MORE MONEY.

You can do safe jobs to earn dosh, and run sims to boost skills, but it's very much a risk=reward. On the other hand, it lets you test out a potential Core build in a risk-free environment, WHILE EARNING YOU EXPERIENCE. Allowing all the time in the garage to be worth something more that a shiny new paint-job.

    Questions? Comments?
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)21:09 No.18745234
    >>18745078

Also, while Synch and Determination share the same general role, they are not the same stat, and have exactly zero overlap.

They can also have vastly different values: One guy could in fact deliberately have a horrible synch stat and high determination to work better in a support role as an operator running Over-Watch, or as a mechanic helping customize and fine-tune.

Can we grab an enemy AC's arm or head and rip it off, then after the fight use it ourselves?
Early on in the quest we got a flail, but i mean more save the part by taking it out of there use, than salvage it after we destroy them.
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)21:43 No.18745770
    >>18745556

Salvage in the general sense is quite possible. It's generally better to leave them as intact as possible to to that though, and go for a mobility kill, either by taking the pilot, or the AI offline.

Swap them. Cybernetic enhancements for people, and the possible evolution of sentience in the AI core.

Question about the setting, is it common for people to try to replicate the symbols of ranked pilots to freak out their opponents?
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)22:17 No.18746265
    >>18746157

Generally speaking, it's a bad idea to use someone else's symbol. Or even look too similar.

There isn't any rules against it, but if somebody put, say, Nine-Ball's logo on their rig? They can fully expect him to kick in the door of their house and brutally murder them in the night.

It's at best frowned upon, and at worst painting a target on your back.

It is however permissible to take someone else's sign after taking them down in combat, though you have to put your 'colors' on the table first.

Losing a fight like that basically means that if you survive it, you don't get another logo until you re-rank as an ace.

Which, by the way is five-confirmed kills (mobility, total destruction, technical, whatever) on other cores your rank or higher. So if you're an S class, you can wreck C's all day and never earn your stripes.

Those are counted at the time of the kill by the way, so you could in theory rank up or down and get more kills that all count.

Also, TECHNICALLY, none of your team's pilots are Aces, although Dave is one kill away at this point.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/12(Mon)22:19 No.18746298
    >>18746265
Mind posting the kill stats for our team then?
    >> AC-Guy 04/16/12(Mon)22:25 No.18746398
    >>18746298

Currently Alex has two kills, and Laurie has three, fighting Bandits prior to the Campaign's start.

Elsie has one actual, and one technical.

Mooch you have no idea about, since you didn't even know he was an A rank until recently.

Dave has four, all since the quest started. He's very good at what he does, but he doesn't often to mix it up like he likes.

Ari's never been in a core before, but I'm including her for the sake of completeness.

Other people you know: Josh has something like 40 confirmed kills against his rank, unknown number of people lower than him.

Nine-Ball they stopped counting when he hit 200. Which is all the more impressive, because prior to starting his win-streak about six months ago he wasn't even a ranked Ace.

Depends on which corporation you're talking about.

G.A. has two main branches, one centered in Detroit, the other in Germany. There's Rayleonard in Canada, and Omer over in Western Asia.

Some corporations, like Rosenthal, have no real 'Central Base' and are just networked together more efficiently.

Though most corporations have at least a MINOR presence in the MAJOR population centers. The closest one to where you are, not counting Vegas, is Seattle.

L.A. was fucking annihilated, and nobody wanted to put down the time and resources to rebuild it, due to the state of the rest of the world.

As far as the Raven's Nest, they're neutral to pretty much everybody who isn't trying to set up a competing firm or trying to fuck with the organization itself.

As long as they pay what's promised, they're cool with them as far as politics go. Personal opinions for individual members vary.

Roughly a decade. It's hard to set in stone, since it wasn't ONE thing, it was hundreds of little things ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE at the same time, for several months.

Some more cynical people think that the only way for it to be fucked up that bad, that quickly, that long, and that THOROUGHLY, is if some malevolent entity was plotting it.

That's actually how the Black Rocks got started: Extremist Christian offshoot who thinks that god tried to end the world, but there were too many wicked folks still walking around for it to take, so they want to destroy everything, and convert as many people as possible in their quest to try and get god to forgive them for not believing hard enough.

The New Type AC is a refinement on current tech. New improvements allow for things like lighter, yet denser armor plating, slightly higher mobility ratings, and the ability to produce a type of reactive energy field as an extra defense, currently called 'primal armor'. These New ACs are expected to become the standard in a few years, and are fully backwards compatible with the current parts line up, to ease the financial pain of the transition. The one major downside is that only about 20% of the current field of pilots will be able to operate these new cores, due to the higher mental stress of running one. Due to this, it's expected that the 'Old Type' cores will never completely cease production.

Type NEXTs are what they say on the tin: The corporations trying to figure out what the next big things for cores will be, and building prototypes to prove it. Due to the highly experimental nature of the endeavor, not only are they very expensive to produce and repair, but they're hard to pilot and can't really be customized since the Corps are still fighting over what the standard parts guidelines will be. They can however, do crazy shit like weaponize their primal armor, transform into planes for high-speed deployment/retreat and engage a stealth mode, to name a few. Even harder and more dangerous to pilot than the New Types.

Finally the Heavy Arms Type is the idea that building the Core BIGGER would let them put more armor and bigger guns on it.

Not really any more difficult to produce or pilot that the current generation, but they do have one major thing in their favor that hasn't yet been adapted to New Types and NEXTs: Over Weapons. The ability to pack a specialized gun capable of leveling buildings. These Over Weapons are somewhere between 10 and 50 times more powerful than conventional arms.

Other than their 'scaled up' size, there's not a whole hell of a lot of difference between them and a normal Core. Agility and such is similar to the standard due to the bigger frame being able to carry a bigger engine and a bigger boosters.
    >> AC-Guy 04/17/12(Tue)17:10 No.18756292
And before you ask: The core Ari built is technically a Heavy Arms Type.

But the whole Core technology, much less weaponizing it, is less than a decade old.

Yeah, a lot of other Asukafags are creepy motherfuckers.
    Guys, she's THIRTEEN YEARS OLD!
Her birthday is canonically December 4th, 2001, Shinji's is June 6th, 2001. Shinji is fourteen and the series starts in late summer and EoE is some time in late December I don't remember the specific date, so she's probably JUST turned fourteen when Third Impact occurs.
I just like her as a character, and I think she's the best match for Shinji in the series (Fuck off and die Mana Kirishima you slut!).
    >> AC-Guy 04/17/12(Tue)21:58 No.18760142
    >>18760054

I didn't much care for her when I watched Eva mostly because she was the most obvious extension of what the entire cast's main issue was: if she got over herself for like FIVE FUCKING SECONDS AND TALKED TO SOMEBODY a hilariously overwhelming majority of bad shit would have been avoided.

Seriously, you could apply that statement to the entire fucking cast. I didn't realize it for anybody but her though, at the time.

Between Gendo going off the deep end, Shinji's abandonment issues, Rei's discomfort with other people, Asuka being Asuka....

Did NERV have even a single motherfucking therapist on staff? I think that they could have just paid a random dude to walk around giving hugs and would have fixed half the problems.

You know what I want to see in a fix fic for Eva? Mr Rogers just swinging by to visit for a couple of days.
    >> Asuakfag 04/17/12(Tue)22:06 No.18760258
    >>18760142
    Nope, no therapist.
My guess? They NEED the Children to be so broken, so fucked up, that it's easy for them to just subconsciously reach out for anyone, anything, that will make a connection without hurting them. So when they get in the plug they connect with the soul in the Eva (their mother for Units 01 and 02, I have NO FUCKING CLUE where the soul in Unit-00 came from or if it even has one at all considering that Kaworu is similar to Rei and can control Unit-02 without syncing with the soul in it) naturally. So when Asuka starts trying to isolate herself from everyone and everything so she can't get hurt again, her sync score PLUMMETS and it just gets worse. If she'd just LISTENED to Ayanami when she said to open herself up to Eva, she could have saved her sync, but she was too damn STUBBORN to accept advice from "Wondergirl".
    >> AC-Guy 04/17/12(Tue)22:14 No.18760368
    >>18760258

It all comes back to 'get over herself'. Which, admittedly was a pretty talk fucking order in and of itself, due to the various ISSUES she had/has.

I think that's one of the things about Eva though: it's all tragic, but they're all preventable tragedies. In a way, that's the most tragic thing about the series: nobody GAVE that one fucking hug that would have fixed everything.

Actually, probably the second most tragic: The mind rape thing was pretty brutal.

Of course, I can't bring myself to hate ANYONE in the series except Kaworu (and that's more personal backlash against the absurd amount of love he gets from most people), and the members of SEELE.
Not even Gendo. What's his motivation? He wants his wife back. He wants the ONLY person to ever tell him he had value, the ONLY person to ever tell him they loved him, BACK. And he's willing to burn the world to do it. It's really the classic "I don't care what I have to do, I WILL see you again my love." motivation, a traditionally HEROIC motivation, taken too far. Taken to the level where he is LITERALLY damning the whole world for a chance to get her back. He's a pathetic character, in the classical meaning of "pathetic".
And does that "I don't care I'm getting someone I care about BACK!" thing seem familiar at all? It should if you've seen Rebuild 2.22:

    >> Black Mesa Janitor 04/17/12(Tue)22:22 No.18760481
I always figured that was the overarching tragedy of Eva: That the ultimate defense of the world fell to those least emotionally capable of handling it.

In action, however, the reasons is twofold: that the point of the show was to watch people crack under the pressure (so you might as well give them some good issues to use), and that Anno was clinically depressed while writing it.

Seriously. Shinji complained a lot, and forever was known as the biggest wuss in anime for it. and yet pretty much all of his complaints are not only valid, its a wonder more mech pilots don't have the same problems.

    >> AC-Guy 04/17/12(Tue)23:19 No.18761224
    >>18761157

Well the short answer is that there aren't many. the longer answer is that the AI core is designed to slave it's functions to yours, and if it's sentient then it will doubtless realize that it would be in it's best interests to support you as a pilot, even if it doesn't like some of the things you do personally.

This means that mechanically, a sentient core might give you a minor buff/debuff to your synch rate. Occasionally doing things to help out, like when Mooch's core locked him at 50% because the feedback pain was getting to be too much for him.

As far as the fluff goes.... if I feel evil your core might start asking things like "Daddy, am I pretty?"

    >Keep it alive....
I shall take this burden on with pride. Anyone wonder why I say Richard Branson is connected with Rayleonard? Because here's a thing I did a while back.

Richard Branson makes Virgin Galactic. Sending the common man into space for a holiday by buying the abandoned space race and using a series of Virgin-owned Soyuz craft.
Thus cornering THAT market and making it not a race anymore because no-one else is doing it anymore and even if I'm wrong, no other publicly-available group for sure. SO. Eventually, the other air-travel corps start getting left behind even more thanks to Virgin Enterprises.
So one, clandestinely, hires a group of untraceable "towel-head" "terrorists" to sabotage a Soyuz and cause massive catastrophe. Thereby ruining Branson... or so they think.

Branson chuckles and begins air-dropping real-estate and pulls all of his funding from the air-transport industry other than to drop houses everywhere and bring people into SPAAACE!
    >> Anonymous !3I4SJbCh8M 04/18/12(Wed)00:04 No.18761863
    >>18761848
Secretly, using the electronic entertainment industry and required tech to run Soyuz (IMA GUESS Plasma drive-tech similar to Flying Triangles), to fuel a new branch of energy generator and weapons-tech. He makes TWO new groups, one focussed on outright weapons-tech and the engineering side, while the other side focusses mainly on the innovative technology and retro-designing neuclear and plasma technology as we know it into something applicable.

Though he doesn't let it be known just who is really funding these new corporations.
Continued attacks (economic, publicity, credibility, and sock-puppet violence) at the hands of rival corporations make Virgin galactic a thing of the past. To Richard Branson's chagrin. He gets determined and publically dissolves his empire. He came from being a hobo, he can easily live on the last few year's profits for LIFE.

    ... or so everyone thinks.
Seeing as it wasn't (seemingly) run by an-ex hobo and average Joe, the other main Corps see these two new companies developing powerful new generators (and using their proven techniques to power much of the world in cheap and renewable sources) as well as weapons tech (bipedal battle platforms like in sci-fi, but proven to work thanks to advancing gyroscopic and pilot-sensetive controls).
    >> Anonymous !3I4SJbCh8M 04/18/12(Wed)00:05 No.18761877
    >>18761863
The other corps see these fields booming out of nowhere, and get jelly. The fossil fuel market stands to lose a lot of money from the new radioactive and plasma-drive power sources being used and so Enron\\Exxon\\Evil coal & Oil empire X conglomerate an R&D division to copy the power sources and make their own weapon technology.

As does the EXISTING global armament manufacturing community, lest they become completely outdated.

Branson finally gets serious from behind the scenes as megacorps begin destroying the world more rapidly than before in order to steal one another's new tech and for a show of weapon design superiority for those lavish contracts. Eventually these groups own so much capital that they envelop country states and become the new borderlines.
Then the megacorps stop looking for government contracts, and start contracting one another because of better profits to be had.

Then Branson one day, while remaining as secret as possible in charge of his two newest brainchildren, looks up at the stars and remembers something in his old age that he forgot entirely about since his relative youth. And feels a little sad. He immediately sends forth his erstwhile technological pioneering corporations, and their standing corporate armies, to go to war with the rest of the world. To destroy the other corporations for previously unknown terrible acts.

You see, gentle reader, when Richard Branson was forced by underhanded corporate tactics to leave Virgin Galactic behind... his opponents set up shop. Taking junk sattelites and retrofitting them with bastardised facsimilies of the technologies he pioneered. The world is now blanketed with sattelites that fire radioactive and plasma-based death upon anything not sanctioned by a few corporate heads detectged up there. Just to make sure he wasn't lying to them.
So Branson begins work on his penultimate endeavor. The last one he expects to see in his own lifetime. He builds on Antarctica, using land he's already owned there for a while now, and builds what is called the Ehrenburg batteries. He sets in motion the framework for a return to the stars, using Téo and Téa project research data, to build a colony-ship fleet. But only when the orbital no-escape batteries are dead.

Oh yeah. His two main holdings in those times? They're named Rayleonard and Akvavit.

But when it came down to it, the brazen war with the NEXTS that Rayleonard and AkvaVit waged just seemed so... desperate. After that mission you take to destroy the Ehrenburg Batteries they just go apeshit.

    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)16:37 No.18769945
    Skills it is then.

Skills are easy: They get a rating, plus the related attribute, plus any circumstantial modifiers.

The ratings are: Basic, advanced, master. Each rank adds an additional +5 to the target number.

There's also a quick skill test, and an extended test.

In a quick test for mechanics for instance, you might want to diagnose a problem in your damaged thrusters an compensate mid-battle.

Because this is a relatively simple task, it's simply a 'beat the target' scenario. An example would be when Laurie and Ken, the mechanic, disarmed the bomb.

An extended test would be something like repairing a core after battle. You would have two target numbers: a number to roll under for difficulty, and a number of success points needed to finish the task.

In this scenario, the rolls resemble combat, with the effect dice increasing with the success rating, and then potentially exploding the dice for bigger numbers.

You can buy perks and take flaws that make it so that the dice you roll for effect get bigger/smaller.

For instance, Mooch's computer use (required skill for hacking) lets him use a d10, while Dave is tech-retarded as far as computer shit goes, so he would only gets a d4.

It should also be noted that certain things can only be attempted with a certain skill mastery. Take mechanics for instance: You can change a tire untrained. You can realign a gun barrel with basic, you can diagnose a hydraulics problem with advanced, but you aren't even allowed to THINK about touching the reactor core without a skill mastery.
    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)16:55 No.18770100
    >>18769945

Something I forgot to mention: sometimes those extended tests have a time limit: Like when you're trying to patch up damage on a core before an enemy arrives, or trying to hack and extract data before your signal gets back-tracked and you get booted out of the system.

Let's say Mooch is rolling to hack a terminal, and the system's security is REALLY GOOD. He only has two rounds to get what he can out.

Getting all the data he could use would take a full 100 points of success.

Because he plotted this out in advance, he gets a +10 to hack, on top of his higher intelligence rating (20) and his skill Mastery (another +15).

He has a full 45 as his target number, before you consider the extremely tight security. So he loses a 10.

He rolls a natural one for the initial hack, which normally would have taken his threshold of 6 and given him 5 additional successes. But rolling a nat 1/100 gives you an additional degree of success/failure (hasn't come up yet in the quest proper). So with 7 degrees of success, mooch gets to roll a full 8 dice to try and hack.

    2,6,1,8,5,1,3,10

He rolled a ten, so he gets a chance to explode: He succeeds, and rolls an 8.
    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)16:56 No.18770112
    >>18770100

Mooch now has 44/100 success points. Since he got a critical success, the GM decides he gets a bonus round to try and get more.

Mooch then gets a 100, and doesn't have a fate point to spare to fix it. Not only does he fail to get any more data out this round, but the next round the system gets harder to hack after it's spotted such a clumsy error.

Now he has to beat a 30 instead of a 35. Rolling again, he gets two degrees of success, and lucks out with two 10s. He's now at 64/100, and he activates one of his aspects (Supreme confidence) to cool his nerves and give him a higher determination for the next check. He makes it, barely, with the boost and roll a 5 and another 10. His boost still active, he manages to beat is one more time and get a 3.

He managed to get 82/100 possible successes before getting kicked out of the system, giving him a decent head-start on information, though not as good as he COULD have done.

You want me to explain aspects too, or save it for a later date?
    >> !UdzMmUq0Oc 04/18/12(Wed)17:10 No.18770287
    >>18770112
    Sure, why not?
    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)17:56 No.18770789
Sorry about the delay: My router crashed.

An aspect is basically the same as it is under the FATE system: A defining character trait. There's also a points system associated with it, but it's a bit more flexible than FATE points.

Let's take Mooch's example aspect: Supreme Confidence. Having it invoked basically makes him think 'I got this'. In a situation where a small boost could really help out, Mooch can invoke this trait in order to give him the boost and help him.

However, the GM could ALSO choose to invoke this trait, for a negative effect. You could have one of your aspects be 'Greatest swordsman ever' and get a decent boost to your melee skills. But you should also expect people to hear abut your reputation and make you prove it.

In Mooch's case, it would make him think 'I got this' in situations where he most certainly does not.

Now, as a player you COULD buy off these things, at the cost of a action chip (working title). The GM could accept this, or raise you. Mooch can at any time choose to stop trying to resist the urge, and get the entire stack of chips the GM is promising him for acting 'in character'. But if the GM backs down, Mooch loses all those chips, but also gets to walk away from a situation he really isn't ready for.

Aspects may or may not be a optional part of the final system, but I fucking love them, so I'm probably going to try and shoe-horn them in there. I just like the diea of a visible mechanical profit from staying true to your character. It's one of the best ways to get a munchkin to stop Min/Maxing constantly.

I particularly like the idea of gambling as to whether or not you're properly in character.
    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)18:50 No.18771281
    >>18770966

I'm more or less stealing it from FATE wholesale.

Generally, it's going to be hard under the system to build an unbeatable character, just because there's so many ways to get fucked over.

Take those guys who jumped Mooch back when he stole his Core: They were PERFECTLY st up to counter Mooch. But the second Elsie, the sniper showed up.... she could've more or less soloed those guys.

So most of the time, you're going to be working with your team to make the best of the 2 out of 5 possible good things you could be doing with your core. There's also the option to have more than one core, built for different scenarios... but constant switching between AIs would rape your synch score, and constantly swapping the core around would be difficult and potentially harmful to the sensitive AI systems.

How much does the Arena pay compared to other types of jobs?

Also the Arena while fun sounding, doesn't give us an opportunity to loot enemy Cores and forge connections with businesses. Also you get to use weird unconventional terrain based tactics in the other types of missions that you have less preparation for, more seat of your pants, and the objectives are more varied.

Arright. So, the arena uses its own ranking system for matches, yes? So if we were randomly matched against another arena newbie, we could, theoretically, be up against a pilot of any skill rank?

Also, what happened to the rocket punch arm that Killington had acquired?

True enough, but it's also a lot of spectacle.

the arena is also a lot like other professional sports: You could get money JUST from winning fights, or you could also get money on the side endorsing products, people might sponsor you and/or events to get some publicity, and some people might just start handing you parts because they like betting on you and they want you to win.

Or they're rich and bored and think it would be awesome to just start handing out Karasawas.

    >>18773047

I recognize that term, but I can't remember what that means. Like those spider-tank things from earlier in the thread.

    >Rocket punch arm

It was a rocket Flail, and you still have it the hangar somewhere. You haven't done anything with it, in part because it was a hilariously over-specialized piece of equipment with multiple weaknesses.

    >Arena rankings.

Count as regular fights for purposes of rank: You're a recognized B, so you'll be a B going into the Arena. They'll try and match you against something appropriate, since there's no fun in trying to bet on an obvious Curb-Stomp battle.

As a Side note, 'kills' in the Arena count towards Ace status.

It was a core type from armored core 3 through last raven that deployed hovering weapon pods above your core instead of having an overboost system. The weapons contained in the pods could either be energy based (EN shotgun, machine gun and cannon) or shell based (rifle, machine gun, linear gun). The EN type tended to have shorter range than their solid shell counterparts but could be recharged once the energy for them (the "ammo") was depleted. With an Energy EO core, you essentially had a backup weapon with infinite ammo, they just had absurdly long reload times. They were useful in a pinch.

Separate events for solo and team matches.

You could in theory divvy up so that everybody's doing different things at once, but Elsie and Lawrence aren't particularly well suited to one on one combat in their current builds, and as a GM I would be forced to kill you for making me keep track of five different high-spectacle bat-shit crazy matches with different style simultaneously.

So in terms of Game Crunch, you'd get another accessory weapon slot in exchange for lower mobility.

Doable, but you could get some insane DAKKA going if you went batshit: There are arms, legs (like the ones on Mooch's core), AND chest pieces where you can mount additional weapon accessory types. Dropping the over-boost for MORE seems doable, if SLIGHTLY excessive.

    I've seen it happen.

One of my personal 'favorites' was during a Shadowrun game. The party split up to pursue their own personal things while waiting for a contact to get back to them.

One guy threw his adopted daughter a birthday party, one guy chose to enter a MMA cage match championship, one guy masterminded and executed a back job with another team of (NPC) runners that closely resembled the one the Joker did towards the beginning of The Dark Knight, one guy challenged the Halloweeners to a 'who can cause more property damage before having to run from the cops' contest, and the last one went to perform a political assassination.

They all agreed that it wouldn't be fair to the other players to let one guy have the spotlight for too long, so I could just keep swapping between them.

So I had to run ALL OF THOSE scenarios, at the same time, improv style. Players thought it was fun, but I almost killed myself trying to keep track of initiative passes.

    >> AC-Guy 04/18/12(Wed)22:43 No.18774229
    >>18774127

You WILL have a quantifiable health bar, right now it's slightly vague on the exact numbers, but it's there.

It's like your CORE has a bar labeled integrity, and when that goes away, your core is dead, but not you, unless you got gibbed by a cockpit breech or something.

It's sort of both wound points and hit points at the same time: A lot of damage to one spot will cause that part of the core to break, and so on, while if you were to just take X amount of damage your core just can't take that many minor hits.

Some stuff, like the Primal armor I'm still working on regenerates.

It's complicated, I'll keep you guys posted as I narrow it down more.

Right then, in an action scene (which 99% of the time will be a fight scene) you have a AP bar for 'action points'. This is a replinishing bar you use to BUY an action.

Let's say you start with 10 AP, Have a max bar of 20 AP, and regain 8 AP a turn.

You would have a list of possible actions that would look like this:

    Move: 3 AP.
    Shoot: 4 AP.
    Reload: 2 AP.
    Skill check: 1 AP.

    Now let's break that down:

You decide to run and jump behind cover, and this would cost you 6 AP, because you had to move twice to get there. Let's say the turn ended there.

Next turn, you start with 14 AP. Etc.

You could also do things like spend a point of AP to hold your action, and try to interrupt. Like you see some guy charging you with a pipe, you can choose to take a normal defensive action, or you could choose to hold, make an opposed initiative test, and interrupt his action by disarming him or performing a counter-attack.

Things like Max AP, refresh rate, and the costs of various actions could vary significantly, but the core mechanic is still there. I haven't been strictly enforcing this, because it would slow the quest down to a fucking CRAWL every time /tg/ had to vote for an action, and then calculate, etc.

I've mostly been hand-waving/rule of cool that bit.

How long the quest is depends on which route people choose, and how well they do with things like the dice. I have no problem with a 'bad end' to the quest.

Thing is, with the pacing and everything, I think the quest is going to go on for a while. Not because I have some evil plot to make it last forever, but the way things are going..... you guys are in the middle of like chapter 2 of like 10-15, assuming you reach one of the 'real' ends and don't die.

I'm not just going to go 'OH, TOO MANY THREADS, TIME TO END'. But I'm also not going to arbitrarily keep it going after the ending should have happened.

Alright, the vision quest thing isn't really hugely complicated: It's a side effect of a high synch ratio with your core.

In the last crunch thread, somebody asked for examples of what various synch thresholds meant as far as piloting goes.

Basically, you were synching so high that your brain was getting background data it couldn't comprehend, so your core was helping you understand them: basically causing you to hallucinate someone else having some sort of an aura. This combined with what amounts to a low grade psychic connection with your core during a synch, resulted in this.

For instance: You were to see a kid playing with an RC car. The core would recognize that the remote controlled the car by listening to the data and watching the car's reaction. But humans COULDN'T understand something like that, since we never evolved the capacity to read a radio-wave with our brain.

So the core shows you something metaphorical that would allow you to make the logical leap: like a leash going from the control to the car like a dog, or a set of strings like a puppeteer would use.

There's also the fact that you'll start feeding the core subconscious information like reading body language or your evolved 'sixth sense' that tells you danger's near, allowing it to better help identify threats, which in turn helps you pilot better, which etc.

    Any questions?

In fact I think I did already, or at least physical appearances.
    >> AC-Guy 04/19/12(Thu)19:42 No.18784563
The thing about Lawrence, if you have to boil him down to a defining characteristic: is that he's very pretty, and he hates that.

Like he's one of those guys who can't grow a beard, and could in fact pass for a woman with pretty much zero effort.

But he REALLY IS a fairly tough guy. Like he doesn't really HAVE much of a feminine side. He's also vaguely homophobic and distrustful of girly things because he got a LOT of shit for being less than macho looking growing up.

As a result he often acts grim and serious as a way of acting 'manly' to compensate for not looking like a manly man.

Basically, picture if Raiden from MGS2 acted like Macho Man Randy Savage, to give you a vague idea of how big the dissonance between how he looks and how he acts is.

You have seen the mask drop all of twice since you met him: Once was when you were about 15, and he saw an injured puppy. He damn near cried, and you also got to see that his fears were more or less accurate in terms of 'if I act any less tough I will be indistinguishable from a woman'.

The second was in the hospital after he broke his arm in a fight with a guy who slapped his ass thinking that he was a girl.

Tell us about guns, are there any weapon types that we haven't seen? We haven't seen anyone shoot a shotgun yet, how do those ones work?

How much does performance vary between the ones we can get a hold of and the ones a pretty rich raven or a trusted Corp pilot could get? I'm talking standard AC weapons or new/experimental AC weapons not NEXT weapons which are probably in a league of their own.

How dangerous is the flail gun, when used by an AC built to use it and if we just strapped it on to Dave's AC or something like that?
    >> AC-Guy 04/19/12(Thu)21:12 No.18785563
    >>18785480

Guns and other parts are complicated, I'll have to do a dedicated write-up at some point.

Shotguns are pretty simple: due to the scatter effect of the shots, they're really only usable in close to mid range, and they get more accurate but less powerful the farther you are away until it barely scratches the paint, and then there's point blank which is getting close to a sword or a HEAT rod it terms of damage, but is easier to avoid.

The Flail-gun is a gimmick weapon: if you can exploit the gimmick properly, it's incredibly effective, like that one AC build in 4A that could one-shot an arms-fort. It is 'rape-train-no-brakes' territory. the problem is that if you know how to get AROUND that gimmick....

Well, you saw what happened to the guy.
    >> Anonymous 04/19/12(Thu)21:17 No.18785597
    rolled 77 = 77

    >>18785563
Er, shouldn't shotguns get LESS accurate the further they get? If you're thinking of spread, then shotguns don't really spread out as much as you would believe. I'd say that with the right choke, they'll spread around maybe 2 fists in width, less with a tighter choke.
    >> AC-Guy 04/19/12(Thu)21:25 No.18785678
    >>18785597

More accurate in terms of 'more likely to hit', since it's a growing projectile cloud, and less damage because less and less of the projectiles are going to be connecting, and with less momentum.

Also things like the choke would be something that would vary fro gun to gun.

For instance, a shotgun that diffused quickly wouldn't be very good for a mech fight.... but it take a lot less damage to say, take out a support chopper or a bunch of civvies trying to run away from a fight.

Or maybe use it to reveal a potentially hidden enemy.

I'm aware that REAL shotguns, even sawed off ones built for maximum spread, aren't as crazy as some people seem to think.

But for one: giant robots, disbelief can be suspended slightly, and for two: makes for a more interesting game dynamic.

I guess what I was trying to say here was that I don't care about it being realistic so much as I care about it being interesting and fun. This is an interesting 'twist' to give shotguns to make them stand-out more from other weapons.

It's not a BAD thing, per say, just.... something I was going to avoid.

It's an issue of contamination: The internet, especially 4chan, allows us to be anonymous. How many times have you seen a terrible movie because an actor you liked was in it?

I like the ability to have people judge what I say and do ENTIRELY on it's own merits. Not because I did them.

This, to me, is one of the best things about the internet. It's be fantastic for me, from a creative standpoint, because attaching a brand to what I do would impact and hurt feedback.

And that's more or less exactly what I would be doing in this case, because that sort of branding is pretty much the best way to get your name out there and have a product sell.

It's something of a quandary for me.
