Heading downstairs, you make the great hall as dinner is being served. There is a seat at the high table for you, and you take it as Paxter calls a servant to fill your cup with wine. The meal is a much more relaxed affair than last night, with a simpler course selection and less pomp. However, the flaky fried cod, sweet mashed turnips, and roasted boar ribs are still just as delicious.

Afterwards, the slowly emptying hall finds you sitting near Lord Rowan and his much, much younger wife. He is a tall, thin man with hard eyes. Searching your brain, you remember what Ben told you of Rowan lands. They are fertile, yet hilly with many rocks and small streams. Because of this, many of his smallfolk are herdsmen who tend to goats and sheep. They produce the finest linens in the Arbor, and fish the seas for herring, tuna, cod, seals, smelt, and anchovies. The deep bays on that part of the island also have the finest, fattest eels which the Rowanese have traditionally used in rich wedding dishes for hundreds of years.

The man turns to you. "So you are the young riverlander that Lord paxter is so taken with? It is good to finally meet you, ser. I have heard you aquitted yourself spectacularly on the field, and everyone heard your testimony today at the trial... I am surprised you are so busy. Are your lands so well ordered that you can dash around the Arbor like a braavo? If only I was blessed with such talented help."

I spend little time idle, I can almost always find some matter or another that draws my attention.

As for the ordering of my lands, I have placed a great amount of effort into finding loyal and talented help so that on occasion I can as you put it "dash around like a braavo" and not worry about my affairs at home knowing they are in good hands. I find the single greatest resource one can ever find to be loyal and talented men.

You take a measure of the man. He is maybe five and forty, with immaculate dress. His doublet is quartered in his house's colors, the brilliant yellow and deep red bringing out the few strands of golden hair that haven't begun to turn a pale grey. He wears a necklace of golden coils that is neither flashy nor overly humble, the fine polish of it catching the light from the dozen hearths in the hall. His face is stern, yet you can see a bit of curiosity.

His wife, on the other hand, is young and beautiful. She is maybe nineteen, with pale skin and brilliant blue eyes. I also see great promise in Sir Martin Crane, he is as eloquent and sharp witted as he is skilled with lance and sword.

You take a time to chat with the Steel Guard over a cup of wine. Doros is there with Cress, David Millson, and Ser Cordwayner. They want to know when, now that everything is done and tied off, they will be heading back to Castle Salt. Cress maybe says it the best. "Ain't no one as comfortable in a strange bed or a tossing deck as me, m'lord... But I do miss those girls back home." You assure them that you are departing soon and that, for a while at least, things should be a bit calmer.

By the time you are done, most of the hall is empty now. The Redwyne men found something else to do, and the only people left now are serving girls and some kitchen lads who are clearing away leftover food and collecting the dishes and silver. One of the girls is clearly eyeing you... She is six and ten, with a great figure. But her face is a bit too close in resemblance to the first man you killed on Crabber's Harbor. Each time you glance at her, you keep seeing the look on his face as you split his skull with that neat, overhand chop. You shake it off and down another cup of wine on the walk back to your room. You find it free of naked noblewomen, which is a blessing, and turn in for the night.

I'd suggest we send a letter to our family accompanied with some barrels of our finest wine. In the letter we should tell them what we have been up to lately (sans the scheming and anything that would put us in deep shit if it got intercepted), telling them they are always welcome in our lands, and asking them if they would be interested in moving our merchandise in the Riverlands.

Cress was a sailor out of Gulltown. The man is as lowborn as you can be without being a bastard, but he is as good a man in the Guard as you could want. David was the son of a miller about fifty miles south of the Twins. He left home at age twelve to escape his rather preachy father (it isn't much talked about, but he believes the Seven are rubbish and the Old Gods are even sillier). As for Arbor lords? None that you can think of. The collection here is rather small, but you are sure that there will be some other meetings that will give you the opportunity to politic. As for the sept? That should be done in just over a year, at the rate your people are working. Then again, it should be an outstanding structure. Easily the finest building in Saltmouth.

Also the Riverlands might be as good a place as any to send the Clawwater girls. It's probably far enough away to avoid the fallout, and our family can make sure they won't come back and bite us in the ass. by then stockholm syndrome and indoctrination should have her made as loyal to us as possible, and since she was rescued from being killed by her own mother by our personal grace (the situation would have unfolded regardless of our own involvement), we should get a good agent in the mainland down the road when either the rebelion starts or robert is king.

You jog up some stairs, and find yourself crossing the main bridge from the exterior wings into the keep, the roiling and churning water from the underwater streams cascading into the shallow pools that flood as high tide rolls in. The guards at the door, men in suits of mail and coats of brilliant blue, open the door and let you in without a word. Apparently, you are starting to be known.

You find Paxter in his solar, talking to several men of disparate age and size. He is discussing wine figures and tallies, while a small man behind him takes down notation in a leather-bound tome. As you enter, Paxter tells the men that they will talk after "the nasty business of this afternoon," and they file out of the room, greeting you and half-bowing as they slip through the door.

Paxter leans back into the recesses of his comfy-looking chair. "Karban. What brings you to my door? I had expected to see you later, at the execution."

Myrianna will hear a lot about what happens from the gossip, serve Dalyna well and pass on anything she hears to her sister. Stefanie we groom to be of use to us while also acting as a playmate for Terris.

Or we take them both as wards and marry Myrianna off to someone nice.

Cite that we'd like to keep the two sisters who have been through so much together and under kind care. I consider that one being at our place and one at the Redwyne's place pretty close together.

Ser Crane is helping Terris on his bladework as Ser Cordwayner serves as his opponent. Terris listens intently as Ser Crane talks about the benefits and disadvantages of the huge blade in the other knights hands. The boy leans quickly, but is still having trouble with fighting with a blade in both hands. The men of the Vale believe in the traditional armament of knighthood, but Iylaria insists the boy learn how to handle at least a knife in his off-hand.

I say go down, instruct him a bit in the use of the shield. As both a weapon and defensive implement.

Tell Terris that while he may not follow a certain path with a weapon that understanding how it is used will only make him better fit to face an opponent who uses it themselves. While the Braavosi water dance may not be for him there are valuable lessons to be learned from it that he can incorporate into his own fighting. In addition you won't always have the opportunity to use a two handed weapon, there are times when all you carry on you is a sword and dagger or perhaps just a dagger or two. A knight must be prepared for all types of combat.

You continue to eat the oranges as you watch the boy. He seems to be adapting, if slowly, and by the end of the session he is dodging or blocking more of Ser Cordwayner's cuts than not. While it might take him a while to learn to use his left hand, he seems to be able to grasp the concept, unlike some knights who just see it as a dead limb to be used to block. You also resolve to teach the boy the offensive uses of a shield... A dirk isn't the only dangerous thing to have in your left hand, after all.

His cape, the one you had made for him in Oldtown with your crest upon it, rests over the back of his chair and a broad knife rests upon his belt. The boy is getting the hang of this.

Around the platform stand maybe a hundred of the city watch, keeping the crowd back with crossed spears and broad shields. You take your place near Portain, nodding a greeting. As the sun continues to beat down, you are happy you dressed sensibly. Terris fidgets to your left, and you warn him what is to be expected of him. Your voice, low and level, rolls over the boy. "This is the end of this business... And a fitting end. One man will die today, and maybe more. As my squire, you are here with me as a boy who endeavors to become a knight. Don't flinch, and do not look away. This is as much a part of your duty as practice with a blade or learning your sums."

Luckily, you don't need to wait long. The Clawwater men are dragged before the crowd. The three of them look gaunt and pale, blinking in the sunlight after a night in the dark, damp cells. Guardsmen roughly push them down onto their knees, placing Lord Clawwater's head on the block as a septon asks the man if he has any last words, or perhaps a prayer. The old man growls out a curse in response. When the septon asks the old man about wanting to confess anything, or perhaps to take the black, Lord Clawwater responds with a caustic tirade about the unfair treatment of his house, and the greed of the Arbor lords. The crowd begins to boo and throw things, torn between a hunger for blood and hatred for a traitor who mocks them with his last words.

Lord Portain growls a low, "Let's have an end to it," and Paxter just gives the headsman a nod. The heavy ax descends with a low whistle than ends in a thump, and the former Lord Clawwater is no more. You hear Terris give a quiet gasp, but the boy stands his ground. The headsman lifts the ax again, and Damien Clawwater is laid near the headless body of his father as the septon kneels near him, to ask about taking the black.

You leave with the rest of the lords as the crowd begins to break up, several guardsmen tossing the headless body into a cart to be sunk off the end of the dock while two other men grab the head, to be tarred and staked near the gibbets filled with smugglers and pirates.

Damien seems to keep himself together a bit better, but it is clear that he understands just how long "the rest of your life" means. You give them as much time as you can, before the guards take him back to his cell. Heading back up the stairs, you feel rather torn. You feel bad for the girls... The last time you see what remains of your family shouldn't be in a dark, black pit. You just thank the Seven they weren't present for the death of their father.

Your small fleet is being repaired as fast the the docks can handle. Your men on the islands are well fed and prepared to sit in for as long as they have to. Ser Wallgrave doesn't really believe that should be necessary for much longer though... As for additional forces? That would be a good idea.

I say let's wait, see if any of our men do well stewarding it and if they prove they can handle it and are deserving of a banner house one of the smaller isles. I like the idea of hording our wealth, gives us some breathing room when shit starts hitting the fan, we can slowly grow our fleet up as our shipyards first expand. We need to put gold into the isles to make them popular. I remember we discussed

-obviously shipyards/naval base on the main islands, with some oyster farming
-lumber yards to build ships, but we should consider moving the shipyards here so they are spread out across multiple isles and they're directly connected to their resources.
