Your tanks check off one by one. They're dug in pretty well, though you're worried about your relative lack of infantry support- most of the M113 and bradley mounted troops were assigned to other areas along the river in the city, which makes good strategic sense, but tactically it leaves you feeling a bit vulnerable.

“Ja, we are good. Let them come!” She says.

This is an interesting departure from soviet doctrine of the period, in theory they should have sent catagory A units with T-80s and T-64s to breach the lines, and then followed up with operational maneuver group units to exploit it.

Even through the hull of your tank, you can hear the roar of your company as they engage. The witches' guns, mere 50mm pieces, flash from a trio of ruined windows behind you. Three T 72s blow out, while one staggers and is knocked sideways a few inches by a solid turret hit. The T-34/85s bear the worst of it, eight of them hit by 120mm shells and one hit by a tank witch's enhanced 50mm- leaving seven shattered wrecks burning on the roads and two burning on the bridge.

“Hah!” you crow. “Gonna be a bitch to move them pieces of shit isn't it you Soviet shitbags! Get some! “

“AP up!” Michael calls, rolling out of the recoil path of the breach as he slams the shell home.

Your tanks start firing at will, targeting the still-rolling soviet armor as they approach the leveled killzone near the bridge. You get your second shot off a hair of a second before the witches, killing the wounded T-72 from before.

Still, more hostile tanks are starting to arrive onscene- though now they know they're driving into a deathtrap. As you watch, the lead T-72 reverses, hitting the tank trailing it and causing their entire company to stall on the road as the tanks to the rear start to veer off to the side streets, disappearing from your scopes.

Your next shell punches a small round hole in the turret armor of that lead 72- it must be an earlier model, you note, because you didn't see any kind of ERA detonation. Still, you must have hit the tank's ammo- a scant second later, it cooks off, destroying the tank behind it as well.

“That counts for two!” you yell over the command net.

“Black Horse, this is Penetrator six, how copy?” You say over the divisional net as Hans slides your tank into it's second position. You've got one more set after that, then you're out of prepared positions and will have to resort to a running fight in the city- not something you particularly relish the idea of.

“Penetrator, this is Black horse. Whatcha want captain?” A regimental radioman answers- the lower level support nets must be pretty jammed if you're kicked up to regimental already.

“We could use some arty.” you say simply. “We're at our second line. The reds own the crossing.”

“Standby benetrator. Got a battery of untasked 155s. Callsign hammerhands.”

“Penetrator penetrator, this is hammerhands. I got six one-five-fives just waitn for somethin to shoot.” a different voice says a few seconds later.

“Awesome.” You reply. “Grid lima six. Got mixed bag Soviet armor and infantry all over the bridge crossing. Take 'em a minute, we left 'em a few wrecks to pull clear.”

“Can you spot?” The artelleryman says.

“Negative... wait one.” You flip back over to the company net. “Wittmann! Can you girls spot for arty?”

“Ja captain.” She says, quietly. “I have an excellent view of the river. They are advancing on the bridge now, dismounted infantry and mixed armor.”

“You know how to adjust fire?” You ask, suddenly worried this is going to be a lot more complicated than it should be.

“Ja captain.” she says.

“Outstanding.” You say, switching back over to the waiting battery of 155mm guns. “Hammerhands, put out your ranging shot. Our german tank witch commander's gonna adjust it.

Wittmann is a pro at this, you note. Listening in over the radio, she walks the fire back and forth across the bridge crossing, sweeping it back to front and left to right, such that there's a shell landing every few yards. The relatively small space turns into a deathtrap for the dismounted infantry, and two tanks go up in the barrage, the other two withdrawing under the attack as the surviving few infantry retreat in disarray.

“Penetrator, hammerhands. You guys are on your own from here- the line's collapsing along the corssings to the south of you. They've tasked all of us to the area.”

Cold War just went hot, the Russians are rolling into Poland with more tanks then god, our best situation is to inflict maximum amount of casualties and retreating to the Oder river where we can settle in, while not as defensible as the Rhine river "way more crossings" its still a good natural obstacle.

“Penetrator, we've got some F-4s in the area. Standby” the man back at the regimental HQ says.

“Penetrator, this is Musket. I've got two F-4s with about as many Mk.82s as you could ask for. Where you want 'em?” the lead pilot calls a second later.

“Right on the bridge! There's a big old honking fucking soviet tank crossing it!” You say, tapping Nicky and having him target it. “Heads up, we saw a lot of AA!”

The pilot laughs bitterly. “You and me both. This whole area is lousy. Alright, we'll make a run, but I'm not coming around again. WE're way low on gas and all airfields in the area are closed.”

Their pass is low, no doubt. You watch as the pair of phantoms comes screaming in, a few hundred feet above the river, and dump their bombs on the bridge just as the front of the massive soviet tank starts to clear it.

The Bridge, weakened by shells already, gives an audible groan of tortured steel- and the tank begins to fall back towards the river.

“How'd we do, penetrator?” The pilot asks from miles away.

“Looks good, Musket.” You say, slumping back in your seat.

“Hey, looks like we're pulling back.” He says.

Sure enough, the command net flashes to static-laced life. “All NATO elements, enact case red. Fall back to line two and wait for orders.”
