First off, typical delay apologies, though damn, two months. Two months! That's a bit much even for me. The big problem is PT every other day, and it's absolutely sapping my energy.

Next up, I'm toying with the idea of getting a twitter for announcing when I run, like a few questers have done. What do you guys think?

You are Anode, A-rank maverick hunter, and right now you've got some trucks to bust.

You are on mission with Emerald, your diminutive green saberslinging bro. Your goal is to bring down the maverick Tumult Terapin and cockblock his convoy.

"Let's hit the vehicles," you decide as you both break into a jog. "Try not to break anything vital, we might be able to keep 'em when we're done."

"Got it." Em agrees as he draws his second dueling saber, short lo-beam numbers that cut brilliant green (naturally) tracers through your vision as the two of you burst through the doors.

And meet a gunline dozens strong. At least thirty mavericks, maybe more, train weapons on you. Beam blades and close combat weapons bristle intermittently in the mob.

There's a moment of stillness and an almost absurd quiet, broken only by the wailing of the base sirens. Behind the thicket of hostiles, you see the transports of this improvised convoy, numbering dozens of assorted vehicles.

Em glances over to you, his weapons resting at either side. If he's taken aback by the show of force, he's not showing it. "So...stick to the plan?"

>They're just trying to slow us down. Hit the trucks.

You look back at Em with a nod. "Stick to the plan, yeah. They're stalling. We can work through 'em." He rolls his wrists, sabers humming. Someone in the back of the maverick line starts yelling, and that's all the cue either of you need.

You break in opposite directions at the same time, a dozen plasma shots cutting through where you stood a moment ago. Em hooks his saber into the ground and pivots on it, throwing himself through the bunched reploids, taking two with him as he moves. You weave to the right, forcing half to break into a run to try and catch up.

Not that they really have a chance, as you dump the scant charge reserve into your dash and close on the first transport--some kind of tracked freight loader. Your advance was fast enough that no one is in position to stop you as you ignite your lance and slash through the treads. You cut it in a second place for good measure as you clear the vehicle and spot the next target.

This one's a bit better guarded, a driver and crew hastily piling out to mount a defense. Not fast enough to keep up with you, though--you just slam your elbow into one's chin at full tilt, throwing him into his buddies as you carve a furrow through six tires on its left side.

That's two on your end. From the sounds of it, Em's got a handle on things as well. The air is full of chaos, between mavericks calling for support, the roar of engines firing up, and the klaxons over it all. One thing catches your ear, though--

"--bats in the air, get the 'loids running!"

Those fucking bats.

You decide against hitting the mechaniloids. Any time wasted now is time lost thinning this convoy. You key your comms as you move for the next target.

"Hey Em, heads up. They're gonna be bringing in 'loid support any second now."

"Fine enough by me," he calls back briskly. "How you holding up?"

"I'm good. Two trucks down on my end."

"Three here. They're only just ready for us."

"So I see," you reply as you draw close to an aging big-rig of some kind, "getting back to it. Out." Three mavs open up on you, putting a period on that as you break left and evade, closing the gap. One moves in, drawing a saber as he does. You bat his thrust aside and fire a burst of plasma into his face. The others return fire, which you ward off with your saber as you charge in. You quickly dispatch them with a slash and more buster fire before putting another salvo into the engine block. One more down.

You can hear them moving now, though, as they finally begin escaping the facility. Still, it's a narrow exit and there's enough left to keep you busy. The next is a wide cargo transport of military origin. An instant before you can hit it, you leap aside as a half-dozen roaring engines streak by--roaders. You clamber atop the transport, over a pallet of the mavericks' supplies. The pigwheel 'loids can't do anything to you now, but they'll be able to keep pace with the convoy and defend it.

From your new vantage point, you can make out Em again. He zigzags between trucks, cutting tires on either side like a kid running by a fence with a stick. Not as fast as you in a sprint, you notice--but he's a lot more nimble, rolling over the hood of one vehicle and landing on another.

You look down, noticing a bright warning sticker adorning the crate at your feet. WARNING--HIGH EXPLOSIVE.

Well, at least that problem solves itself. You wind up and trigger your thrusters, turning in midair and firing another salvo behind you. Crate, truck, and mechaniloids alike go up in a massive blast.

Unfortunately, it also attracts the attention of a swarm of those bats.

And, with the unmistakeable thuds of its footfalls, a ride armor.

You land directly between the two, of course. The bats circle, ready to cut off an escape. You don't have time for this.

Pinned down is pinned down, unfortunately. Plus, the way you've been letting them organize, it was either deal with them or let them overwhelm you. The bats seem content to just circle, though that Ride Armor feels like being more aggressive--he comes in with a charging punch, no blocking that--following up with a cross with the other fist as you hop back. It keeps the pressure up, refusing to back off and let you try to line up an easy hit on the operator. You're going to have to do this one the hard way.

Fortunately a ride armor is nothing if not an easy target--even the best operator can't avoid blows as much as mitigate them. You come in from around its arm with a two-handed swing, dragging your lance across its side. You hop back at its reprisal and fall back under a barrage of punches, charging your buster.

If you keep up like this you'll take it out, but it will take too long. Rather than wait for an opening, you try to force its pilot on the defensive by thrusting at its face. It blocks it, but you send it backpedaling with a burst of charged plasma.

"Hey, Anode?" Em radios. "Dunno if you can hear it, but we've got a copter approaching."

"Great. I'm dealing with a ride, give me a sec."

"Want a hand over there? Most of the working trucks are gone."

"You know, part of me wants to sic you on that flyer," you note.

"And part of you is a bastard," Em answers without missing a beat.

"Yeah, but lucky for us--" You evade another flurry of attacks from the ride armor-- "I'm more practical than that. Can you handle this guy?"

"Roger that. Mind those bats, you've got a whole mob on you now."

With that you break off, heading in the direction you last saw Em. He announces himself with a whoop as he vaults a disabled transport, coming in with an aggressive overhand swing and a blazing orange blade as tall as he is.

Show-off.

He quickly draws the ride's attention, leaving you free to clamber up the truck he just vaulted and make your way towards the sound of the advancing heli.

You notice immediately it's a mechaniloid--shaped like a bee, no less--and coming in fast and low. You think you remember hearing about these, an evolution of the old Bee Blader. It sets its sights on you, opening with a barrage of fast-moving burst lasers from its eyes and "legs."

Right, it's not the only one with a laser. You evade the fire, sighting with your buster as you reposition.

The way you see it, unless you get absolutely blindsided, the only way they'll win is through attrition. Fighting defensively and conservatively until you have to gives you better odds. Plus, you have a few weapons to select between, so you don't have to risk spending all your good stuff in one engagement.

All of that, of course, is only really academic if it buys enough time for that convoy to escape. Time to do something about that, starting with a piercing blue beam of light drawing a line between you and the bee.

It banks away, but not before you catch one of its stabilizers. It's still flying, but it lists a little, struggling to keep all its guns leveled on you. In response it spits a rocket at you, walking a barrage of laser fire up at you with it. Clever--limiting your options. You dash between two slagged transports for cover, letting the missile detonate on the side of one, blasting a hole clear through it. You promptly fire back with your own rocket right through it. It's moving fast enough to evade this shot, unfortunately, and doesn't seem to be slowing down as it bears down on you.

We don't have to aim for total destruction of the giant bee, only crippling it. A bird on the ground is the same as a dead bird. Take out more of those stabilizers and send it plummeting to the ground.

It's a pleasure to see Maverick Hunter Quest back in the saddle. After Street Fighter Quest, it feels neat moving from one Capcom quest to another.

Try and stagger its movements with basic rapid-fire shots, then take out the heli blades while it's off balance. If there isn't a clean angle on the blades, blast out stabilizers instead.

Getting it closer won't be hard, given that it seems to be trying to strafe you. You move and shoot, sending long chains of fire downrange from both barrels as it flies in, returning the favor with a fusillade of laser cannons. It weaves back and forth, though you notice it takes longer to correct its course swinging back one way from the ailing stabilizer. Each shot only does minor damage, but at the rate you're hammering it, that barely matters.

Unfortunately, this close it's too fast to score hits on, screaming overhead and swinging around for another run. It spits another missile, forcing you to change tactics. There's no adequate cover, so you spend another chaff missile to knock it out of the air. The mechaniloid notices and banks to avoid the cloud of flak, turning away and presenting you another opening.

With the convoy escaping, this time you don't intend to let it drag this out any further. Your overcharged laser hits it broadside, hitting the stabilizer on one side and slicing clear through to the other. The rotors cough, spark, and give out, sending it spinning wildly. It lurches and reels, listing right into a mob of bats. Neither group comes out on top in that encounter as it plummets to Earth, choked with dead fuckbat. Job done, you go to check on your partner.

It's almost like watching a cobra and a mongoose. Em wheels his sword back and forth, inside the ride armor's guard. Each time it winds up to swing it meets the blade before it can build speed. The arms are the strongest, sturdiest part of the machine--built to be slammed into something over and over again with the force of an industrial press, but even from here you can see the glowing furrows carved into the insides of its limbs.

As you get close, the operator sees you. He panics and tries to overpower Em, surging through his guard with brute strength--meeting no resistance at all as he adroitly leaps its arm and drives that orange blade into its back. It winds up for a vicious backswing, only to begin smoking heavily and go dead. The pilot is fighting the controls uselessly as Em kips up and knifes him in an eyeblink.

"Brotip!" he calls as he hops down, "Heat beats armor. Just line up the vent and kill it with fire. Thanks, by the way."

"No problem," you say as he disengages the two-hander embedded in the machine's back and works it free. "Our support coming up?"

"Ought to be. How'd we do?"

"I got four."

"Six, but you kept them busy long enough to bag the last few. Call it a tie."

Crankshaft drops off your rides, and before long your hunters link up. Seven ride chasers set out, hot on the trail of what's left of the convoy. "We got most of the little ones," Em observes, "they still have most of their heavies--including that crazy-ass land battleship thingy."

"That a technical term?"

"Could be. What I'm getting at here is--I think we have a shot at boarding them."

"Em, that ... sounds ..." you grin manically. "Fucking awesome!"

"I know, right?!"

"Um," one of your Steel Berets says, looking between his two superior officers. Poor bastard.

"Heads-up," Crankshaft calls, shadowing your pursuit up to the convoy from above, "You're closing fast. Looks like they're expecting you. I've got eyes on movement, I'll call 'em as I see 'em."

"Roger that, thanks, Cranky," you reply. You gun the engine, moving up as the tail end of the last truck appears ahead.

"You realize these are India's chasers, right?" Em asks warily.

"Yeah, I know, she'll kill me twice if I put a dent in it. Why? You scared?"

"She once sat through a whole meeting on fire." That's... huh.

Your banter's interrupted as Crankshaft calls a warning. "Heads-up, kids, bats, road attackers, and ... I think a few crushers up ahead. Yep, they're toughening up the path.

Sure enough, it's not long before you have to maneuver around some broken ground--and by broken ground you mean a solid three-foot-wide lack of it. Ahead you can see the crushers, dropping their spiked weights with enough force to hear over the wind rushing past you.

"You know," he adds, "with enough speed you can just clear those potholes." How... very authentically Crankshaft.

When in doubt, GO FAST.

Okay, attack plans, find the battleship, blow up anything in our path with our own busters and the blaster, prioritize speed, if there's anything big in the way we can joust it, find a weak spot on the battleship and find a way in.
>>
>>21706762
>GOTTA GO FAST
We can't afford to lose time, or else we'll lose that convoy. If any Roaders or whatever get in our way, we'll punch 'em with the ride busters.
If we're going to mount one of these vehicles, we have to make sure we're at speed with the tank, which shouldn't be an issue. These things always have external handholds because it only makes sense to get up and down the thing, so find those first, and make the jump to grab on. We can get someone to recover India's speeders later. Since these are Mavericks, I can't imagine them giving up tanks like these so easily, so I don't anticipate them compromising one cruiser for the sake of the rest of the convoy. As long as we get onto the first one, disable it and make the jump before we lose the next one, it should be a straightforward smash-'n'-loot. Remember, we want to salvage these later to rebuild Armored, so try to minimize collateral.

Deep inside, you feel a powerful urge welling inside you.

You feel the need.

You feel your grin go from "wide" to "unsettling" to "rictus" to "put down the knife" as you tightly grip the handlebar of the Cheval and turn it as far as it will go. Indy really did tune these things for speed--if you had a stomach you'd have left it behind you with fear, reason, and self-preservation.

You practically fly over the massive gaps in the road without stopping, firing your buster into the air as you go, shooting down half of the crushers.

You cackle gleefully as the first convoy vehicle leaps up to meet your breakneck pace--

Don't think of it as dating, think of it as wacky adventures that just happen to start with dinner at a nice restaurant.

"HOLY JESUS," you crow, "WHAT ARE THESE GODDAMN ANIMALS?!"

"Why does everyone always say that?!" Em hollers back.

"We can't stop here, Em! This is bat country!"

"WHY DOES EVERYONE ALWAYS SAY THAT, TOO?! Is it a reference?! ARE YOU REFERENCING THINGS IN COMBAT?"

-----

Well back, with five Steel Berets on Ride Chasers, maverick hunter Emerald had a realization.

His face was as stone, despite the flurry of chaos and gunfire ahead.

Anode was crazier than he was.

Behind the expressionless mask, Emerald screamed internally.

Mother of God.

-----

You clear a path through the swarm of bats with one buster and the cheval's blaster, just enough to get through. "You've got the rest, right, Em?"

"What am I gonna do, flail at them?!" he asks, exasperated.

"Flail at them exceptionally well," you reply helpfully. "Besides, your chaser has a gun!"

"Forward-mounted and can't be elevated or depressed!"

"Sounds like a dull life," you observe as you pull up beside the first enemy vehicle and match speed.

"Fffffffff..."

You ignore Em's simmering as you prepare to jump--already you can see they've prepared for this, as mechaniloids and personnel scramble.

"--ffffffFFFFF--"

What the hell is he doi--

"FFFFUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOU," he roars, not needing comms for you to hear him. He screams by, going as fast as you were--maybe faster, he's lighter, after all--and you swear for that eyeblink in your vision he's giving you double birds as he careens past, driving with his boot on the handlebars.

With that, he simply coasts over up ahead of you and lightly hops up onto the transport.

"You've got the rest, right, Anode?" he asks serenely.

"Fuck you," you grumble.

"No, fuck you and your references."

"Before your time, kid. Fuck you."

"I'm older than you are! Fuck you!"

"It's a matter of class and distinction. PS, fuck you."

"Yeah, real classy, you've been saying f--"

One of the Berets cuts the two of you off. "You're arguing over open comms. Sirs." In his voice, you HEAR the bleak-faced, completely unamused expression on the production model infantryman's face, absolutely screaming 'we are going to die.'

Of course, it's somewhat diminished by Crankshaft's wheezing, helpless laughter over the entire fracas.

Okay, okay, you guess you should do this leader thing. The first transport is slowing--both to let the rest get away, and to allow the bats to catch up. You see the new 'loids arrayed against you--Amenhoppers are skittering across the cargo crates and deck of the vehicle. Sky Claws are deploying, presumably to pick up and dislodge you, with Helits flying support for them. On the ground you see more Road Attackers coming your way, and fast.

>Follow after Em.
>Okay, you DO have the better ranged game. Stay mounted up, joust some drivers and cover Em while he takes the transport.

Orders?
>We took the ride chasers for a reason--keep the berets as outriders to support you and harry their ground attackers.

We have to clear the sky sooner or later. Plus, in super-tight quarters, we'd just get in Em's way.

"Okay, okay," you relent, coming down from your field trip to Insanity Junction, "I'll support from the bike."

"Attaboy," Em says cheerfully. You open up on the nearest Amenhopper, clinging to the side of a box facing you as you relay orders to your poor men.

"Right, keep up, but stay back and watch for trouble. Let me know when those bats are getting close and we'll catch them in a crossfire."

"Roger that, sir." That done, you return to the battle in front of you, keeping your head on a swivel. You watch Em advance up a ladder and meet a charging maverick, slamming an elbow into his face and sending him reeling. In the same move he snaps the tapered beam hilt from it (ouch) and delivers a sharp cut across the front, cutting through his chassis with a quick slice. He sidesteps a plunging Sky Claw and neatly takes its arms off on a return-slash. He moves ahead fast, drawing a sword from his hip and adopting a rapier-and-dagger style you remember your sister trying once.

"Heads up, those bats are inbound."

"Riders in front coming in for a fast attack pass," Crankshaft adds.

"Copy," you respond, "I'm going to hit those riders before they can give us trouble. You draw your lance, letting it fall to one side as you shift your weight.

Normally this would be difficult, dangerous, and reckless--not that it'd stop you from doing it. But unfortunately for these mavericks, you like to play to your strengths. This includes an upgrade letting you slot your lance down your buster and brace for a charge, just like couching a lance.

Still, these road attackers are well-trained and disciplined. At the extreme edge of your vision, they reposition into a wedge, like a charging cavalry formation, intent on forcing you to one side or the other if you don't want to face the entire team. It's a smart move--they'll blow past you with minimal casualties and hit your small Beret force head-on.

But unfortunately for them again, you're just full of surprises. You bank to their outermost edge, just as they surely expect. Your opposite number opens fire from maximum range--far past effective distance, hoping to get you weaving and bleeding speed--but you just lower your lance and hold it in front of you, feeling secure behind the protective distortion field.

You wait, and wait, and wait, fingers tense on the chaser's throttle. They go from pinpricks in the distance to looming figures in seconds.

And as they're about to blow past, you release the gas, firing a tension coil to your left and mooring it to the transport Em's clearing. It goes taught at chest-level just as you make your respective passes.

The first thing you notice after the shock runs through your arms is that the impact jumped your capacitors up 10% by itself. The second thing you notice is the corpse snugly resting at your shoulder, with lance, hilt, and entire goddamn arm through the middle. The last thing you notice is the distant crashes and explosions of the remaining road attackers, all cut down on the power of their own momentum through that coil.

"First transport's slowing," Crankshaft observes. He's right--you notice your coil going slack. You clear the slain attacker from your arm, stow your lance and boost forward again, letting the coil wind around its front as you circle around to the other side.

...And that's when you see the train.

"Em?" You radio.

"Just finishing up here, I'll get my ride and..."

"Em, we have a problem."

First, I think you SHOULD get a twitter, since I already missed this much. Twitter is awesome for quest-tracking.

For questions, I guess I should check and see if it's cool if I post story-time in between sessions in the thread to keep it alive. We just finished the OMH saga thing, so I have more time to make it all pretty.

On a final note: I missed these threads. This is arguably my favorite quest, second only-ish to AC-Quest.
>>
>>21709581
It's a common trend to post stories between quest updates. Helps keep the thread alive and flesh things out.
>>
>>21709581
Re: storytime: By all means! I can't tell you how giddy and excited the MMX game stories make me.

And thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

I think I'll look into that Twitter, the consensus seems to be that it's a good idea, though I might study MGNQ and what have you to see how it's done first.
>>
>>21709606
Typically, quest twitterers will post future game times, live thread notices, and related artwork/fanwank, though MGNQ's Deculture has the tendency to talk about related things as well. Lost Future's runner, Resistor, also has a twitter account for questing, and possibly the only reason it came back from hiatus is because his fans were pestering for him to come back..
>>
Right, so let's get this story-time going.

When I last left off, Will was being dragged into town by his two compatriots to learn how 'fun' works.

Sim and Mit hit an arcade, and a bar, and then some kind of restaurant. Will went along until he was sick of the bright lights and found an old fashioned bookstore he snuck into at the earliest opportunity.

There he was introduced to a Old bookseller and his daughter who ran the store, and was imparted with a deep love of reading. He ended up buying pretty much all of the Asimov books because the 'three laws' of robotics made him laugh uncontrollably, and continued going back because of the Retro-Scifi.

Sim and Mit would repeat this pattern of trying to get Will to do something reckless and stupid, only to for him to inadvertently discover a quiet art gallery or something several times over the next couple days.

During one of their adventures through town, a bunch of little kids accost Will and drag him back to their school where he spends most of the day doing impromptu PR for the Hunters by talking with the Children he saved.

Beyond those two developments, nothing really important happened. It was mostly just us running from cops and trying not to let Hunter Command know we were the hell-raisers.

Then one day, in the middle of watching the local news, a general alert goes out, and we discover the Vienna is under attack.
>>
>>21710313

It's only after we deploy to the field that Frog reprimands us for going off base, since now he needed to leave in care of a dude who just got there instead of the 'professionals' he intended to.

"Come on, he can't be that bad." Mit commented from the car as we get flown in.

"He just covered half the base in an oil-slick, chasing down a superior officer."

"Which one?"

"Sev."

"Remind me to buy the new-guy a beer."

"You're not allowed to encourage this behavior." Frog commented with a sigh. "Alright, what do you boys know about the situation on the ground?"

"Not much." Will answered with a shrug. "Some huge info-war machine we're calling the 'sky-jammer' is fucking things up and we need to destroy it."

"We as the hunters, yes." Frog responded. "You boys in particular are gonna be playing 'firefighter'. Go where it's bad, and take out problem areas. Resolve them and move on."

"That's it? Nothing more specific?" Sim asked in surprise.

"You work better without someone looking over your shoulder. Just try and keep the collateral damage down." With that, Frog signed off and we got booted out of the plane.

"A thought occurs." Sim comments from the gunner position in the back. "How useful is the car going to be in Vienna? Isn't it all canals and such?"

"Naysayer." Mit comments while Will gunned the engine.

A few minutes later, we encounter members of the first attempting to secure a beachhead, and Will meets his brother.
>>
>>21710326

Joseph Marshall was one of many competing prototypes to try and replace the main-frontline soldier in the Hunters. He more or less amounted to an updated version of the 'Sniper Joe' style robots from the Robot Master era, with severely upgraded abilities.

They lost the bid since it was slightly too impractical cost-wise and not quite as adaptable as the standard Beret types.

In any case, Joe was a rising star in the first, since he could tank pretty much anything short of a Enigma blast head-on as long as his shield was in the way. Putting him in front of a squad tripled the survival rates in the field and made command (briefly) reconsider which unit they had as their base-line.

We meet Joe's squad pinned down behind some rubble by a couple of Ride-armors modified with cannons. Will disounts, uses EAS and takes out two of the four in one turn. Sim pops a second and Mit manages to Hack the third and force it to self destruct, after charging backwards into an incoming squad of Mechanloids.

"Nice save." Joe comments.

"Yeah," Will responds. "What happened?"

"Our ride in got shot-down, almost lost my squad." He shakes his head. "Did lose the pilot. What're you doing here?"

"Spec-Ops experimental unit." Sim answered. "At the moment, we're assigned to helping clear troubled sites."
>>
>>21710442

"Thanks for the save then." Joe says with a respectful nod. "If you're looking for trouble, there's some down by the docks. Apparently the Mavs are trying to get reinforcements in that way."

After thanking him for his intel, we move through the city blowing up Mavs and at one point inadvertently saving India by running over a dude with a Laser-canon about to shoot her out of the sky. After realizing this fact moments later, Sim quietly filed it away for leverage if she decided to do anything to him.

We get to the docks, and see a huge submarine unit coming up out of the water. Will, having apparently no sense for consequences, immediately drives straight into the open hatch trying to deploy foot-soldiers and proceeds to start running people over, while Mit and Sim gun down everybody they can. They end up leaving the car parked 'topside', and have Mit hijack the submarine. After forcibly taking control of the thing, Mit notes a weird black 'haze' over the systems, and wisely jacks back out after killing another landing sub with the on-board guns, and setting the thing to blow.

We get our first hint of 'Virus theory' maybe being true, and get the hell off the exploding boat in our car as we cripple the port's ability to accommodate enemy troops.

Mit took the opportunity to send a cheerful text to the Naval dision commander not to mind us, since we were only doing their jobs for them.
>>
>>21710513

The whole thing at this point was basically one 'minor impact but totally awesome' stunt after another, slowly crippling overall Maverick capabilities and eventually winning the battle. By the time it's over we've secured about a dozen new ride armors and some weird intel on the Maverick activity.

Mit was called in for a special debriefing on his experience inside the Maverick communications system, and we are all sent back for some R&R back on base.

It's during this time that Will is finally convinced to go drinking with the rest of the crew, and not long after they decide that it's probably a bad idea to continue forcing him to drink. Especially since Frog made them pay for removing Mr. Killjoy from the bar.

"No idea, kid," he says, "it just came out of a tunnel a moment ago and it's masking readings."

"Meaning it's up to no good," you note.

"The guns told me that much," Em replies, climbing a crate and looking out at the passing train. "How the hell did they get control of the rails?"

"Knowing them, they didn't."

You watch as car after car blazes along the track, even as the rest of the convoy slips away. "That's...a lot more supplies."

"Calling it in," Crankshaft provides, the mirth gone from his voice. "How are you going to play this, boys?"

You look back and nod, decision made. "I'm going for the train."

"Got it." Em heads for the driver's cabin of his new ride as you bank left, closer to the train.

"Whoa!" Crankshaft calls as he sharply jinks away, tracers cutting through the air. "Too much AA for me to support you on this one."

"Fine enough by me," you reply. "Can you stay close enough to spot for us?"

"No promises, son, these birds like to fight back when you get fancy. I'll do what I can."

Your approach doesn't go unnoticed--the AA guns can't depress and hit you, but panels flip on the sides, revealing short-range turrets--one spits a cone of flame at you, forcing you to weave and brake nearly to the end of the line.

It's a beehive here, mechaniloids swarming through the walls--literally, scuttling crablike things slinging purple balls of plasma at you, forcing you to slow further.

"You've got birds on your back, Anode," Crankshaft warns, "Old Metal Wings, gaining fast."

"Bats have redirected," one of your Berets adds. "They like you, boss."

They're definitely trying to shake you before you can get aboard. This thing's stupidly well-armed. Finally, for lack of options and time, you fire another coil and drag yourself and your bike over, hooking onto the rail of the last car.

You've been lucky, so far--either through force or audacity, nobody in your party has even taken a hit so far. Maybe you're just a cynic, but you can't help but expect that will change.

These mavericks are prepared--well prepared. They're ready for you, so what's the harm in making sure they can't surround you? You hop the rail, and after a moment's consideration, tether your chaser to the side of the train.

Sure enough, it's not long before you see the Metal Wings. Microjets with a vaguely avian form, flying loose formations as they zip hither and yon. The ones approaching you look nasty--between them and the bats, you could easily see yourself crashing in a heap evading them all. Grateful for Crankshaft's early warning, you meet them with a pair of charged bursts from both barrels.

The results are spectacular. A hail of a dozen shots streams downrange, each taking at least one 'loid with it. Most take more, and one straight down the middle downs three bats and a bird. The bats break off and scatter, leaving a scant handful of birds to pick off without their screen.

"Mop up the rest of these and keep an eye out. Look for any ways to harry and slow the convoy vehicles."

The Berets move to comply while you turn to regard your ride.

are the guns control inside or outside?
if they are inside, get in if not stay outside and use said guns to kill every single maverick, once we've relived the gunners from their posts of course.
also H.C where do you get all your pictures? (they are one of the many reason I follow this quest)

Oh hey, we actually ended on a tie. Have some more intel to help your decisionmaking.

----

The train cars appear to be military hardware, not simply repurposed civilian models. The domes of the AA guns are flush to the hull, and either remote-controlled or automated. If you can hack them, you doubt it's going to be from the turrets themselves. The insides of the cars are shielded, so you don't know what's waiting for you inside. You know the exterior has mounted antipersonnel positions and mechaniloids, notably the Flamer (hurr) turrets and Wall Cancer (durr) crab-bots. Given the extent of the defenses and equipment on this convoy, you don't doubt they can throw more Metal Wing flights at you out here, and that might not even be the end of it.

There are in fact tunnels, but they have sufficient vertical clearance that you can negotiate them safely. There are occasional lower-hanging signs as well that might force you to keep your head down, though.

While we're at it, a layout of your forces; you have five Steel Berets mounted on Turbo Cheval ride chasers, currently acting as outriders, harassing and harrying and otherwise slowing up the procession of the enemy convoy and keeping you clear from a distance. Crankshaft is flying support, though he's using an unarmed transport that he's probably been ordered not to crash into anything. He's waved off in the face of the AA, but he's still providing recon from a distance. Both you and Emerald have ride chasers as well, though both of you have dismounted. You're on the last car of the train, and he's in the driver's booth of the last truck in the convoy. He seems to be accelerating.

Almost forgot to answer this. I get my pictures from all over the place, usually 4chan. Anything Megaman related (or just that I can use) I save, usually with a dumb filename to go with it. As for MHQ-specific art, a friend of mine draws it for me whenever he has time.
>>
>>21728678
MHQ threads tend to last a few days, either because of HC's pace with updates or some other factors. Other people pad the thread with story0times from, among other things, their quest-inspired campaigns to fill out the thread. According to my postcount, this thread is only halfway done, so we have a lot of room to fill.

"I'm heading in, guys. That shielding might block comm contact."

Em responds quickly as he begins catching up on the next car. "Roger that, 'Node. Happy hunting."

Given the size of the car, you might have room to swing your lance inside, but you have no idea of knowing how crowded it is in there. You switch to your misericorde, charge a buster, and blast the hinges, following up with a kick that sends the door tumbling inside. Hitting your dash, you surge in after it.

Plasma sizzles past your head from the defenders, as one hauls himself up after diving aside. You hunker low and return fire, narrowing your profile as you advance. One or two stray shots glance from your armor, doing minimal damage, but you gun down the culprits without much trouble.

Sirens light up in the wake of your attack, and a metallic booms from the PA system. "INITIATING LOCKDOWN."

You hop back as a massive column pierces through the floor, slamming into the ceiling with a green, blocky head. It swivels on the new impediment to stare at you. It dodges your first knife-swing, but you catch it on the reverse. The head spins away, letting you put a chain of shots into it as it reels. It explodes, letting you wrench the drill-column aside and continue. Unfortunately, it doesn't shake the feeling that you just got into a fight with a Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robot.

"Dunno if you can hear me out there, but they know I'm coming," you radio. "They're trying to slow me down with more stupid 'loids."

If they got that, they don't respond. You look around as you move through the car--no supplies in here, but it's the last train. You reach the door to the next car. Except for the sound of the rail beneath you, silence.

They already know the hunters are here. They can probably guess, if the lockdown is any clue, that we're already here. There's really only one way in or out, unless we want to get clever and clamber outside between cars. Let's go in hot.
>>
>>21728747
>Agressive Breach
Probably best to move fast, as they might sacrifice a few loids to keep us busy while they detach the car. Assuming they can do that, anyways. And if not, just moving fast can catch them somewhat less prepared.

No sense going slow--if they're going into lockdown they want to stall for time.

You slam your misericorde into the doorframe and carve a furrow into it, throwing your whole weight behind you. You repeat for the other side, back up, and then take off with your electric dash, shouldering in with full force.

It feels like you slammed headfirst into Tanker again, but the door blasts off its hinges, making a handy shield. Fire splashes across its front until you slam with a grunt into the responsible party, throwing the door over him and yourself over both.

You roll past and come up buster-first, spraying wildly back from whence you came. Two more mavericks go down, and you quickly stab your knife through the battered door and into the maverick beneath it. He spasms once, then goes slack.

You hurry through, shoulders bumping against the stacked cargo crates on either side of this car. You reach an open space, and, on a hunch, dash through it at full speed. You make it past another of those drill-blocks as it snaps up from the ground again in the gap. You don't have time to congratulate yourself, though, before you have to dive to the ground as a missile streaks down the car and impacts against the mechaniloid behind you.

Down the way, you see your attacker--a head gunner, though unlike the mass production models you've used before, this one is heavily armored and boasts a pair of high-caliber cannons. They level on you, tracking as you move. You have no room on either side.

Think fast, Anode.

>Blackout Rocket
If the rocket itself doesn't get it, at least the flak cloud will stop any more missiles. Then we can clear the cloud from above and move on.
>>
>>21729030
seconding this, as long as we're pretty sure more missiles are going to be coming out of those cannons- not sure how the flak cloud holds up as a defense against anything else, though.

The clouds are usually pretty good and dicing up most anything that passes through, to say nothing of fouling up any smart systems. It's basically a floating dead zone.

A side thought: if we're lucky in the future, we can get a wind-based weapon to push around the cloud or clean it up sooner.

Nothing much for it--you raise your own buster in response and fire off a chaff rocket.

It fires missiles and lobs a small shell at you--the missile hits it square on, blasting it out of the air and releasing the flak cloud. The missiles don't make it through, though your plasma does, as you hammer away at it with both barrels until the surprisingly sturdy mechaniloid dies.

"LOCKDOWN LIFTED," the loudspeakers announce as the fireworks come to an end. The door at the far end opens, and slats in the sides retract, letting you see out the sides of the train. Well, that's good, at le--

>Other?
OVER the flak, stupid. Get outside and see if we can't make the jump. If we're too far out, bring a chaser around to grab us, THEN chase down the train.
>>
>>21729240
This is probably a bad idea, but we are on tracks right? Can't we just shoot our tension cable out that door and into the other train? If this car is slowing down fast enough it should pull us through the chaff with minor damage, and, as reckless as this may be, we can use the cable as rope dragging us onto the escaping train. Either way, moving a chaser in to support either for if we fall, or just to keep up, it could work.
>>
>>21729292
>>21729302
Combining these two, hop up on the roof, hit the train with the cable, and swing around onto it.
>>
>>21729310
Lets try that.
>>
>>21729302
We don't actually have a zipline function on our Tension Coil. It was an option during the upgrade downtime, but we eschewed it for more substantial upgrades, unless you plan on manually hauling us in onto a traincar likely going 100+.
>>
>>21729348
I was thinking manually, its still a rope for the most part.
>>
>>21729310
Or we could pull a trick from X himself and go for a pretty nifty dash-jump, especially with our super-meaty EAS dash.
>>
It's more a matter of fast versus safe at this point. Most of these are going to involve spending some time cutting your way through the side of the train.
>>
>>21729445
Well, if we're gonna be outside either way, the best thing to do is at least bring a speeder around as insurance in case we botch the jump (assuming there's even a jump that can be made). Trotting through the cloud would just be silly if we can't get around it from inside, so let's make an entrance.

Also, get Cranky to see how far this track goes. Are there any convenient chasm-spanning could-easily-be-bombed-if-they-wanted-to bridges in our near future? Bad movie and game tropes say they always pull something like this over bridges like that.
>>
>>21729445
Have a berret board along the sde so we can borrow his chaser, and he can retrieve the one we teathered.

"I'm gonna need a chaser up here," you report as you stab your beam knife through the wall. "Can one of you drop yours off and take mine?

"Roger that," comes a Beret. "Bats are clear, though they've started making passes with Earth Commanders."

By the time you're through the wall, he's pulled up alongside, and with a bit of difficulty you trade places. You take off like a shot for the train, now far ahead again, though it's speeding up with you--looks like they've jettisoned enough cargo to try and stop you.

Sure enough, here comes a flight of Earth Commanders. Crankshaft picks out another flock of Metal Wings behind them, coming at you fast. "Do we have any idea where this thing's headed?"

"Not a clue," Crankshaft replies, "But we've passed on word to transit officials, and they're getting the line clear." You wince inwardly imagining a train this large, this fast, hitting a civilian model in the opposite direction. Hell, if they anticipated that, they probably designed the front as a battering ram. You'll find out when you get there, you guess.

It's not hard keeping yourself clear through the Metal Wings, and the train still has all that weight to compensate for, meaning you accelerate much faster, quickly nearing the new last car. You can't keep letting it get away like this, though. Up ahead, keeping pace (barely) with the train, you see those Earth Commanders. Turrets pop back out of the sides, ready for you.

>Clear the Commanders and get up on the top. No risking getting bogged down inside.
>Try for the inside again. Even if they decouple again, that's another round of supplies they're not getting.

"Right, let's try this again," you mutter, gunning the engine. You pepper the nearest Earth Commander with shots. The propeller goes off, surprising you as it suddenly turns into a blazing wheel. You redirect, but overcorrect and begin losing control of the bike. Shit. Now or never.

You leap, snagging the side of the car as your chaser wobbles off on its own, surprisingly stable. "I hope you can get that, Cranky."

"As long as the guns are up there and it's back here, I can. Y'okay, son?"

"Yeah, unless India finds out that just happened." With a grunt, you clamber up onto the roof. Good timing, as the handhold you just made turns into an angry turret, spitting fire where you were.

"Whoa! Eyes on target, eyes on target--!" Em exclaims. "I've--wait. He's gone."

"Gone? What do you mean, gone?"

"I mean one second there was a big-ass fucking turtle here, and now there's not. Keep your eyes open."

You've got your own problems, speaking of. Those crabs are scuttling back out, charging spheres of energy to ruin your day. The turrets haven't gone anywhere, either. You switch back to your lance--it's nice and open up here, at least, fighting your way from one end of the train to the other.

The convoy and the train are two different supply conveyors. Taking down both will make life better on the whole. Terrapin can't be in both places, but I've got a sneaking suspicion he's on this train. Get our boys to corral the convoy if it hasn't been already; it's not like the train can leave the track.
>>
>>21730388
>It's not like the train can leave the track.
I remain unconvinced of that. Mavericks are a weird bunch. That said, this is a good plan, keep moving and let Em do his thing- we can both handle ourselves, though we may come back a hand short or something.
>>
>>21730410
Considering Terrapin is rated to be the equivalent of a Grappler (high-power combat specialist rated specifically for precision target removal [game terms: the guy you teleport directly into the boss room instead of the beginning of the stage]), this encounter will be an exercise for anyone involved.
>>
>>21730449
I'm not saying we solo the guy if we see him or anything, but we've got a train to stop and Em's dealing with the convoy/land battleship situation. Unless we plan to let one of them get away, backing each other up is out of the question until one of us has settled our respective business.

Shaking your head, you move along. Em's got his end wrapped up, you just need to keep on yours.

As you look up the line, your nonexistent heart stops when you see a quartet of missiles screaming toward you, long contrails blazing behind them.

You dive, the force thudding through your body as they impact, chasing after you with a chain of explosions you only barely avoid. You scrabble to your feet, only to leave them again as a pair of grenades jingle merrily as they fly towards you, shredding the roof where they detonate.

From the next car, Tumult Terapin looks down at you imperiously.

"Disengage the shielding," he says tersely, eyes locked on you. "Redirect the power to the engines."

With that, he fires another volley into the connector between your cars and turns his back to you, winking out in a flash of light.

"TELL ME you just saw that," you radio as you wind up and leap, clawing your way up to where he had been standing only a moment before, the car behind you engulfed in a chain of explosions as it falls behind.

"Local teleport," Crankshaft replies. "Meaning they set up a relay to go between the train and the trucks."

"No one told me we were fighting fucking Batman," Em grumbles crossly.

The train lurches below you as it picks up speed. To make matters worse, the turrets and crabs have come back out to play.

Now we REALLY need to stop this train before it comes undone and derails. If Terapin's teleports are on a relay, then there has to be beacons on both the train and the convoy he's jumping between. This son of a bitch is clever. You consider what you thought earlier, about getting whittled down, and realize he's going to force you to do exactly that.

"Crankshaft, he said he's diverting shielding to speed the damn train up. Can you tell me what I'm looking at?"

"Working on it," he replies, "More of the same inside and out, with a few reploids here and there. Explosives in every car, including the decoupled ones. That's a hell of a contingency."

"Can we blast this thing? Or fuck up the track?"

"If it comes to it, but there'll be hell to pay and none of the elements that could do it are anywhere nearby. Command's already said they don't want it to come to that."

"Command can go f--DAMMIT!" Em howls. "There he is again! Engaging!"

"Go keep an eye on him, Cranky, I'm going to make for the engine car."

"Roger that, I'll split the difference. We both know he'll be back for you." Crankshaft leaves you with that cheerful thought as he banks over to the convoy.

"Yeah. Yeah, he will. How are you doing back there, Berets?"

"We're good, sir. Slowing up cars for Captain Emerald."

"Keep an eye out, that fucking turtle's over there somewhere."

"Copy, sir."

You break into a run, dodging flames, bouncing plasma orbs, and the occasional Metal Wing or Earth Commander, though they're falling behind at this speed. You take a few more hits as you move, but nothing critical. Finally, burnt and slightly concussed, you've made it to the second to last car. The last in line looms ahead.

You tuck and roll as you hit the last car on the line, thunder across the top, and snag the grill in the front with a coil on the move. In one motion, you release the coil, grab it along the length, and leap from the train, lance leading.

The train enters a tunnel as you enter the cabin in an explosion of noise and (insufficiently) reinforced glass. You slam boots-first into the driver and skewer him, turning to regard the rest of the car.

Sure enough, three mavericks were waiting by the door, weapons raised. You send them scattering for what little cover they can find as you shove the driver off your blade. Despite the barrage, one of them runs for you, snapping a saber out as he goes.

You meet his charge with your own, smashing his thrust aside with your lance. He's more experienced than your average mook, though--quickly twisting away and coming back with another cut. You grab his wrist and slam him in the forehead with your pommel before quickly gunning him down.

Unfortunately, his friends used the interim to follow him into melee. One seems to be using a saber and buster, just like you, while the other's adopted an aggressive two-handed grip and comes in swinging.

You surge across the room in an eyeblink, planting your foot on the twohander's chest and sending him to the back of the car with a blast of thrust. The force sends you back, trailing another coil as you fly. You lash it back and forth unpredictably, warding off the other, who backs off and fires. Your lance sees to that, fizzling his shots as you snag the body from the ground and sling it at him, catching him in the middle and giving you time to move in for the kill--

Only to be forced to turn and deal with his buddy charging again, only just deflecting another aggressive charge. The shooter takes advantage of your distraction to put a three round burst into your side. With a grunt of annoyance, you lift the body off him and then slam it back down, winding the coil around his friend's arm as you do. You tug, pulling him off balance and onto your sword. The other tries to shoot again, but not fast enough as you throw the second body into him and then detach the coil, putting him down with a final lance thrust.

You turn to the front of the train just in time for your cheek to meet Terapin's fist, sending you tumbling backwards until you slam into the far wall. He shoots you one last callous glare before punching something into the controls, right before he destroys them with his fist. As you haul yourself back to his feet, he blinks out.

You rub your jaw. "Egh, I'm here. Train's clear, but--"

There's supplies, 'loids and troops on this train. Apparently, Terapin has no issue scuttling the whole thing, Maverick infrastructure be damned. Why, though? Are the Hunters really that big a priority or possess so much of the Mavericks' onus that they'd sooner destroy their own supplies before letting the Hunters secure them? They're nuts.
>>
>>21731900
I'm worried about the fact that he destroyed the controls. Blowing the train is one thing, but I'm worried about why he'd put it at full speed and arm it, then make sure there was no way to stop it or slow it down.

So much for not damaging the rail line. "You did say this line's been cleared, right?"

"Right. At least that's not a worry, but I don't know how long that fuse is."

You haul yourself back out of the front window, leaving four dead mavericks behind you. You're going at breakneck speed, here. Sturdy as you are, you're not looking forward to jumping off this thing.

You keep your head down as you enter yet another tunnel, trying to think of a safe way out. The light at the end rushes toward you--hopefully only literally--and you find that the train has pulled up almost alongside the road as you clear it.

At this speed you've gotten some distance on the trucks, but they're close enough to see the lead element--that massive landcruiser thing. And, faintly, you can see a green blur bobbing across the surface.

A shadow passes overhead. "Picked up a little something for you," Crankshaft says, his bird maybe twenty feet overhead. "Get up to the front."

You don't need telling twice--moving to the extreme edge just as you start to hear and feel the explosions rocking the entire train.

Cranky's transport is smoking heavily from a clipped wing, but he's low enough now to avoid further AA. And beneath the belly of the bird is a ride chaser.

That magnificent bastard.

He slowly comes down lower, angling precariously as you feel heat rising from the buckling train hull. Finally, you reach it, climbing on as the clamps disengage.

The train speeds ahead of you as the chaser fires up, finally going up in an enormous conflagration up ahead. The damage looks enormous. You can feel it from here as you veer to the right and move back towards the convoy.

Just in time to see Terapin seize Em by the throat midleap.
>>
>>21731949
All the more insurance to make sure the train doesn't fall into Hunter hands, I suppose. The explosives were likely insurance in the event the train was compromised. Either way, we're dealing with a runaway train and a giant bomb that are both one and the same. Supplies are nothing if it means the Mavs get to take the Hunters (and any innocents) with them.

Either way, I think Terapin realizes it's a wash and is going to bail.
>>
>>21731985
Somehow I figured Em was going to catch the worst of this when we found out Terapin could teleport back and forth as needed. Get on the chaser, get righted, and clip that son of a bitch in the wrist with the laser as soon as we get a chance.

Em struggles and kicks as Terapin's fist closes around his neck. Terapin leans in, almost eye-to-eye with him--close enough to hear over your comms.

"Codenames Double-A and Little Man. I'm almost flattered."

He slams Em to the floor, sending his saber clattering aside, and then hauls him back up again.

"Almost."

You steer over as fast as you can, weaving around debris from the train still raining down across the line. You fire snap shots at him, but he just turns his back, letting them deflect harmlessly from his shell. Terapin continues as if you weren't even there.

"Unfortunately, we knew you were coming. You're not the only o--"

Whatever he was about to say is replaced by a grunt of annoyance as Em snaps the beam knife off his chestplate and sinks it into the maverick's wrist. In response, he fires a laser mounted on it, point blank, right up into Emerald's chin. He flies backwards, helmet blasted off as he's thrown from the convoy and tumbles backwards, bouncing out of sight.

Terapin turns and regards you coldly as you slam into the side of the supercarrier, snapping your lance alight.

>Go.
>>
>>21732170
Well this is bad.

How are we on Capacitor Charge and ammo for our various stuff?
>>
>>21732170
>Em's Maverick code-name was Little Man
Tell someone over the coms to pick Em up, as little frothing at the mouth as we can manage. After we turn this asshole into soup and see if Em lived, we're never going to be done mocking him about that.
On another note, this son of a bitch is armored all over the place, and as strong as he looks. We need to be careful about getting in close, but our Lance is probably going to be the only reliable damage dealer we have... except, we can dial that laser up for a more powerful shot, right? I wonder how that'd work.
>>
>>21732194
This is good to know. Still, I'm of the opinion that we need to somehow surf him off the convoy into the dirt.
>>
>>21732211
Terapin's a Grappler-equivalent, meaning if there's any one thing he's good at, it's single combat. We need to be extra tricky against a tortoise that can manhandle us like a, well, a battery.

>>
>>21732245
...Shoot him in the eyes, maybe? I'm trying to think of where exactly one would attack a giant metal turtle, but honestly the dude's a giant stack of armor and missiles. >>
>>21732170
>"Unfortunately, we knew you were coming. You're not the only o--"
... yeah, okay, now I'm really worried; I am mentally filling that in with "--ne who can call in reinforcements."

And this guy... is pretty damn close to being an anti-Anode weapon, isn't he. Is there any way we can use the immediate environment to our advantage?

>>21732310
Like this, possibly? Tether one end to TT, the other end to something not-TT. Another convoy vehicle. A more fragile one.
>>
>>21732384
I wouldn't say he's anti-Anode. He's just exceptionally beefy. He's still grounded metal like anything else.
>>
>>21732310

I was filling that in with something about being organized, i.e. some kind of Maverick Command that's keeping tabs on hunters and giving forewarning of our movements. Codenames for us and Em kinda back that up, and maybe these supplies were heading for some kind of central base.
>>
>>21732435
we had to hook ourselves up to a reactor so powerful that it melted our own insides to do that.

The landship might have similar enough juice, but there's no way for us to tap into it from where we are.
>>
>>21732440
Ever since Sigma, when are the Mavs NOT at least mildly organized?
>>
>>21732440
If there were a Maverick Command, it wouldn't be sitting on easily-traceable railroad lines. The supplies would have to be offloaded somewhere and shipped by other means to their HQ.

>>

OH. I get it now.

We kill him HARD for shitty puns.
>>
>>21732774
Okay, we got enough to work with. If there's anything a slow-and-steady tortoise has, it's a strong base. We need to do something about that. We're still below him, so see if we can't launch a Tension Coil around one of his legs and, if not pull him off-balance, at least pull ourselves up on top of the land battleship.
To fight a big guy, we're gonna need some big charge. This battleship has to have something we can use.

You just NOW got it?

>>21732810
People nursing hangovers generally aren't all that sharp till their heads clear.
>>
>>21732774
Excellent.

I don't think Blackout Rockets will do that much to him with his armor and it'll set up chaff fields that might inconvenience us something fierce.

But Lockon Hunter ought to be able to get some damage in if we use high powered shots.

I'd like more charge, and if we can find anything in the area to absorb that'd be all the better. Tension Coils might be able to trip him up, but be sure not to get into a situation where we're matching our strength against his, we'd lose.

Charges with the Lance and then slamming electricity through the hole we make could seriously damage him, might be our best shot of getting a major wound in.

When in melee try to keep to the side of him that has the arm that had a dagger stabbed into its wrist. He might be a bit bit slower, have a weaker grip on that side.
>>
>>21732843
>Blackout Rockets
Plus we're moving at high speed in the open air atop a land battleship. Those clouds of chaff will get blown away and lost in the prairie winds, so our rockets likely won't work this fight.
>>

We'll just have to save it for when this fight almost invariably transfers to the ground and/or this convoy explodes/crashes/what have you.

Considering the picture in >>21730646 , this guy really is armored out the ass. There's that conspicuous yellow thing on his head that might be a viable target, or those ports on the edge of the shell if we're feeling like a sharpshooter, but other than that this guy really is a hell of a puzzle.

From what I remember, every spin-off campaign (of which there were at least two) use some manner of unique homebrew system. Buying upgrades and redundant systems, location damage, lots of different things that were played by ear and constantly updated. Plus HC has mentioned he's been working on a system to the side as well. Nothing has actually been released from anyone.

That aside, it's pretty amazing. Many quests have writefagging, drawfagging, and at most, spinoff quests. This is the only quest I know of that has inspired spinoff CAMPAIGNS.

I've read the threads, one uses Firefly and I forget the other. >>
>>21737149
TL;DR, while I watch a lot of reloaded saves in Death to Spies:
1: Classes are made up of 3 tracks that provide abilities.
2: Each track has seven abilities gained at different levels.
3: You can switch out one track for free or multiclass to switch both, changing them to anything available to make a custom set of abilities.
You can even get a fourth track by giving up your wealth by level. It's a very streamlined d20 system designed to work for most anything. My only character in it so far was a lightning-quick dodgetank who spun up like a minigun, building Armor Class by taking it from enemies every turn while building up for big attacks.

Legend? I'll give it a look and a shot, and if I begin anything, I'll draw upon you guys to try playtesting.

Figures of note and hunters responsible for defeating prominent mavericks or stymieing important operations get codenames.
Hammer's Old Man. Schwarz is Black Dog (Which has stuck among the hunters as well--mavericks are genuinely afraid of him.) India lacked a maverick codename until Vienna, since she was a low-priority ground threat--and to be honest, kind of a middling officer, disinterested in the job with her wings clipped.

You fire a coil straight at him, balancing on the chaser with your knees. He simply catches the wire with his palm, then grasps it with his other hand and bodily hauls you off the bike and over. You come down on the floor, trigger your EAS and leap, winding the coil around his arm and twisting the wire, baring the edges in the cable and pulling taut, trying to cut through him like a pair of wire strippers. His armor holds as he narrows his eyes, pulling the wire taut, lifting you, and slamming you back to the floor. He fires another wrist laser, severing the line as you pull yourself back up.

"Tell me you can teleport-lock this fucker," you seethe.

"Going too fast," Cranky replies, worry clear in his tone. "If I didn't think he'd just beam out of the way I'd ram the sonofabitch."

Any further conversation is cut off as Terapin takes off for you like a shot, but you're ready--he brings his fist down where you were as you hop to the side and come in with your lance in both hands. He raises his arm inside the swing and actually deflects your strike, gauntlets holding against the blade. You backdash out of the way as he adopts a boxer's pose, chasing after you with a swift jab. Abruptly his hand vanishes, replaced by the barrel of a buster cannon. You swing your lance back around defensively, catching a blue-white sizzling orb of plasma that hits like a hammer. It actually pushes you back on your heels with the force. Before you can reprise, you hear a dull thump as another grenade is launched from his shoulder port. You only just dash under it, coming in with a forward thrust of the lance--

--Only for him to engage that local teleport and fizzle out, blinking back in on the opposite end of the hull. Your lance only hits empty air as you turn back to face him for the next exchange.

>He's strong up close, try to wear him down at a distance.

Aw man, that teleportation is a real problem. Fight defensively, avoid those heavy weapons, and try to let him cause as much damage to this battleship as possible- he punches enough holes in the armor, maybe Crankshaft or the rest can take advantage of the weak points to blow the thing to hell, and take his teleport beacon with it.
>>
>>21743937
This. Try to bait him into using his big attacks to screw with the train. See if he's only teleporting around into certain places, too - like, if he reappears in the same places or if he's got free movement with it. The only thing we can really do here is look for openings and try to find a way to screw the teleports - it's happening fast, though, and the more time it takes, the less likely we are to shut the train down in time. The whole situation is geared towards him, but if we get aggressive he will fuck us in the eyesocket.

You resign yourself to a long, drawn-out battle. With luck, hunter reinforcements are scrambling. Without luck, maverick reinforcements are scrambling. There's nothing you can do, though--Terapin is just too well-prepared to be reckless against. You hope you can get his attacks to wreck his own ride, hopes of capturing the superheavy transport forgotten. You'll settle for living to see another day.

Not that you're just going to lie down and take it. You build a charge while you stay back, taking stock of what you know. He's extremely quick, especially for his size. He's got grenades, plasma guns, the wrist lasers, and those missiles in his arsenal, and you can testify to the strength of his right cross. His armor's absurd--you're not even sure that dagger through his wrist actually injured him. If it has, it hasn't slowed him down.
>>
>>21744523
Have we not told one of the Berets to pick him up? Do that.
Also, yeah, we're on the land-battleship thing. Train blew up, we jumped off just before it did, then Em ate a blast and we got pulled up here to fight.
That said, we still need to take out this battleship thing, and if it's half as tough as the tank we don't have that kind of firepower. What kind of damage are the grenades/punching from Terapin doing to this thing? If it's negligable, then we just need to start taking out his weapons systems as we see them. Jab with the lance, evade, pick off his shoulder grenade launchers and those wrist cannons.

He makes another run at you, screening his approach with a cascade of missiles again. You're forced to move to meet him up close to get under the tracking warheads safely, and you duck as a massive fist sails overhead. You boost past him, unloading one of your busters into his side as you pass, which only seems to annoy him as he stops himself and throws an elbow around behind him. You block it--ostensibly--feeling your armplate dent as he makes solid contact. Your capacitors shoot up 5% from the force, so at least there's that.

His size makes his reach rival yours--the lance is longer from hilt to tip, but your effective striking area is far shorter. You could rely on thrusts, but charging right at him is probably suicide.

Then again...

You dash again, correctly predicting another ranged volley. This time you have enough leeway to prepare for a counterattack as he moves to meet you. You stop, dropping to a crouch as your legs spark against the ground, then spring with a boost of thrust, cocking back your arm as you spring over his. With an almighty crash, you take a full-body, dash-propelled swing, slamming your buster into his jaw, and fire a hurricane of superheated plasma directly into his face.
>>
>>21744622
This reminds me, the dude's kind of built like a Ride Armor, what with the ridiculous defense, punching, and being loaded with weapons. If he has obvious vents, target them with anything but the rockets. If he doesn't, then we need to find a way to turn up the heat on him- Em did mention how vulnerable those things are to overheating.

For a beautiful moment, Terapin reels, head smoking as the sheer power of the shot snaps his neck in the other direction.

And then his fists close around your arm and side.

"Got you," he rumbles.

You hear the whine of booster rockets and the sickening snap-lurch of momentum as he takes off with you in toe. You smash into the side of the driver's canopy with a horrible, jarring slam, before he bodily lifts you and pounds you into the floor with a crash. You feel a dozen structure warnings activate and scream as your chassis buckles beneath the force of the blows, his fists raining down over and over again. Somewhere, dimly, you feel a faint glint of recognition and amusement.

Oh. "Tumult."

Ears ringing with the crunch of metal on metal, you dimly feel yourself raise your buster feebly, switching to Lockon Hunter and firing a beam at overcharge straight up into his chest.

He sees it coming, unfortunately, and pushes your arm aside with almost trivial ease. Lucky for you, not fast enough--the penetrating laser punches clear through his shoulder and lances past, jerking his body back mid-windup. You take advantage of the scant window of time to level your other buster and fire another laser, which he leaps back to avoid. You stagger back upright as he disengages, steadying yourself against the driver's cabin. He glowers at you, re-evaluating your threat as his shoulder smokes heavily, daylight visible through a clean-cut hole burned through his frame.

"You won't do that twice," he says quietly.

PS, shouldn't it lock-on? Also, WTF, shouldn't this guy be B tier?
>>
>>21744796
How many more shots like that can we pull off before our energy is tapped? Also, stick close to that arm if we get a chance. I'll bet that finally slowed him down.
>>
>>21744796
hm. Fall back (not too far), feint trying to hit him with the lazor but keep our lance ready. I think we can still shoot lightning beams from it and our capacitator should be damn near maxed out after the beating he just gave us. When he evades the laser, fry him with a lightning beam.
>>
>>21744827
Not many. If I remember right, you've fired 7 of 16, the overcharge shots costing double, meaning you've only got four more, and one regular-charge.
>>
>>21744884
Then if we go for the feint plan like >>21744845 said, use up that totally useless normal-charge shot when we do. Also, I advocate getting the lance into that wound we just opened and frying the bastard.
>>
>>21744821
He's A, but i think one could easily class him as a SA in this environment. His greatest weakness seems to be a lack of speed, he compensates by fighting on a landcruiser and teleporting.
>>
Why aren't we blocking his missile fire with chaff missile, again? Besides, it'd disrupt his teleport signal, presumably.
>>
>>21744954
Moving vehicle. The chaff clouds aren't going to be riding along with us- which is part of the reason I wanted to take the fight off of this damned landcruiser already, or better yet disable the thing enough that it quits moving.
>>
>>21744979
At this point this might be our best option - ignore his ass completely and start making as big a hole in the supertank as we can manage. Force him to play defensive around it and buy time.

DOWNSIDE: Every major attack we fire at the tank is one less we can fire at him. I'd really want a group consensus about this plan before putting it into play.

Also, seriously, he's a SA here? We are not suited for that kind of fight, not when he just put us into major warning mode.
>>
>>21744796
Tag something off to his side with Tension Coil. Keep the Coil attached. Aim yourself to the opposite side of him and Raikousen past him, placing the Coil in monofilament mode as you do so.

Even if he's somehow too tough to get turned to sliced cheese by goddamn monofilament wire, we'll still wind up hogtying him like an AT-AT.
>>
>>21744796
start punching into consoles and draining energy. also do quick once around the room and check for lighting (mmmm electricity) and see if we can overload this damn land battleship
>>
>>21745072
Until he teleports
>>
>>21745072
We already tried this. It failed epically.
>>
>>21745037
>>21744845

I think those plans are our best bets. Ideally do the lightning beam with electricity from the landcruiser. We would need to find a way to get into the vehicle, though.
>>
>>21744979
So? make sure we're on the side where the cloud will be moving AWAY from us when we fire, and it should a)block the missiles anyway, and b) then hit him right in the face.

>>21745184
aren't we already in the cab right now?
>>
>>21745293
I think we are vaguely on top of the landcruiser. I guess its armored and has a substantial interior.

"Makes two of us," you croak.

"I won't need to," he replies, crunching a fist into his palm. His shoulder sparks in protest, but it still works. You hope he isn't right.

"So has anyone collected Em back there?" you comm, wincing at the pain evident in your voice. You can't help but notice his helmet, cracked down the front, discarded near Terapin's foot.

"Negative," Crankshaft says. "I don't see him."

"I need to slow this damn thing down," you mutter, mostly to yourself. You look at the driver's cabin you were just slammed into. The armor held where you hit it, but you notice that when he pushed your arm aside, the laser put a hole through it as it exited his arm. Maybe--

Your thoughts are interrupted by another volley of projectiles--Terapin thunders forward, chasing you away from the driver's cabin with a barrage of plasma fire and laser bursts. You keep your distance--he has a wide variety of ranged attacks, but those at least you can probably weather a hit or two from. Not that you want to push it.

Your capacitors are pretty full--75%. Most reploids would be incinerated in one hit from that, but Terapin isn't most reploids. He hasn't seen you pull this off yet, either. It might surprise him. On the other hand, you could try to stop this damn truck once and for all. And, you note grimly, even if he kills you, his entire convoy's been stopped and other hunter elements might take him down.

Maybe.

...How did it come to this?

>Aim for the cabin.
>Aim for Terapin.
>>
>>21745656
We aim for him, he can just teleport. Let's bring this thing to a screeching halt, shall we?
>>
>>21745656
I'd make a cabin boy joke, but I'm not gonna.
>>
>>21745656
Stop the Landship. If the convoy is stopped and his teleport disabled we are free to run circles around him and snipe terapin with our lasers. Also, Crankshaft might be able to ram a plane into him.
>>
>>21745656
aim for the cabin.
>>
What's our current charge at? Do we have enough to do a "fuck everything" storm and release it through our feet into the truck?
>>
>>21745792
Just said, we had 75%
>>
>>21745656
Aim for the cabin. Fuck his plans.
>>
>>21745656
Aim for the cabin. Don't blow your capacitors on this one - widen the hole in the cabin armoring with a Lockon shot, then send in a chaff missile through the hole. Chase the missile with another Lockon shot in case Terapin tries to intercept the hit.

Unless you stop this truck, there's only one way this is ending. You raise your buster, switching to your Lockon Hunter--

And as he turns away, putting his shell between you and him, you surge ahead, firing past him and into the breach in the cabin armor, bringing up your other arm as you switch weapons and fire a chaff rocket after the laser.

You fool him once, but not twice--the boosters in his shell fire and he jumps backwards, letting the missile impact harmlessly on his back. He snags you as you try to get past, hauling you bodily through the chaff cloud as the vehicle trundles on.

No. Not like this.

You level your lance at the cabin.

Not like this.
In a flash you discharge your systems--you hear another grunt of pain as a great deal of the current arcs through his plating, but his grip only tightens as he pulls you away from your target.

He holds you high in the air by your head, his other hand crushing yours, keeping your lance out of play. Behind you, optics cutting in and out, you see the cabin still standing.

The convoy is still moving.
>>
>>21745656

The armor is stripped and the entire assembly is melted and burning, but the interior components must still be working. With just one more shot, maybe...

"I told you," Tumult explains as he almost casually shoulders your shaking arm off-target, "we knew you were coming."

He squeezes harder, and you feel your helmet cracking in his grip. The feed from your optics fills with static and noise and one of your audio receptors shorts and blows out.

http://youtu.be/GKU44GiVl_I

And then, with a scream like a jet engine, Emerald slams a ride chaser into the unshielded driver's cabin at two hundred and fifty-four miles an hour.

----

"...'node."

...

"Get up, 'node."

...

"Come on, shit's not funny."

You open your eyes and the world slams back into view. Em looks back at you with a line seared up through his chin and clean through his face. "We're not done yet."

He hauls you upright with a groan--you see his left side is gouged and cut, his armplate nearly gone, and his shoulderplate completely destroyed, baring the exposed joint.

"Truck stopped?" you mumble thickly as your senses (most of them--fucking ear) return.

You turn around and see the main deck sticking out of the earth at a fifteen-degree angle. Fires burn everywhere, with greasy black plumes clouding the sky. The next vehicle behind it has upended over it, flipped onto its side, and the tires grind and dig into the destroyed road ineffectually.

"Truck's stopped," he replies as he hands you your beam lance.

"Let's kill us a turtle."

You clear your head, assessing the damage. You hurt all over--ALL over--but you're functionally in good shape. You can only hear out of your right side, but Terapin's not exactly quiet anyway.

The maverick chooses then to rise out of the wreckage, smoke rolling off his shell, unbowed. He almost calmly shakes slag and steel off his legs as he steps free and turns to face the two of you.

Em draws his twohander again, rolling the hilt in his hand once as he lets the flaming blade rest at one side. "Thanks, by the way. If you hadn't shot at him that laser was going to take my head off."

You switch to your Lockon Hunter, raising one buster as you ignite your lance with a crackle. "Guess we're even. How did you even get ahead of us?"

He shrugs as all of you, hunter and maverick alike, take ready stances. "I was pissed."

Good news, he's not going to be teleporting anymore, and we've got him outnumbered. Also, no longer on a moving vehicle, so fuck him up with a blackout rocket. Priority should be to punch more holes in his armor whenever we get a chance, and to keep his attention divided between us and Em.
>>
>>21746551
hit him in his damaged arm, he'll have a hell of a time fighting off Em in close quarters with only 1 arm.
>>
>>21746551
Well, we can't exactly pin him down bodily. On the bright side, we've stopped moving, so our Blackout Rockets and their chaff cloud are now viable options. We'll need those to stop his ranged options. That aside, we need to shave those turrets of his before they become a problem.

Em is in charge of crippling his ranged capabilities (saber to the turrets, etc.). We'll be doing the bulk of the damage, wearing him down, hopefully crippling him and keeping him from moving. He's surprisingly fast, and all that inertia is no fun.
>>
>>21746551
>Won't you give up already? Both your convoy and your train crashed! You want to outrun the entire MH force sent here on your stubby legs?

>>
Man, I don't see us being able to nail this guy if we hadn't of gotten the lockon laser. We just wouldn't have had the tools to hurt him short of getting a lucky shot down one of his barrels.
>>
>>21746653
I do not think we can damage him much, we got 2 penetrating shots left, and after that we are down to our misericorde. If we miss with those, Em needs to do the bulk of the damage with his hi-blade while we keep him occupied
>>
>>21746810
As long as we take out his limbs before that happens and Em shaves those turrets down to size, I think we'll be fine.
>>

"I've got this little tradition," you say casually as you and Em start to circle in opposite directions. "I don't feel right not giving you a chance to surrender."

"No surrender," Terapin says, rolling his shoulders as he looks back and forth between you.

"Didn't think so," Em says. "Worth a try."

In an explosion of movement, you all take off at once. Terapin charges you again, with Em hot on his heels as you dash to your side. A pair of grenades explode where you stood and a missile tracks after you as the maverick turns to meet Em's full-body swing. You fire a chaff rocket back at the missile, swatting it from the air with an explosion of chaff. Em ducks in past the maverick's reach and carves a furrow into his stomach plating with a moving cut, barely dodging another punch. He doesn't dodge the plasma cannon, hitting him square in the back and propelling Em away with a crash. You don't wait, dashing in under your chaff cloud and forcing Terapin to catch the edge of your lance on his arm. He winds up for a kidney punch as you put a Lockon Hunter through the weakened armor Em left. His blow connects, doubling you over, but before he can follow it up, Em is on him again, letting you back off safely. He throws Em at you, who tucks and rolls, coming up standing beside you.

Lockon's eyes flit between the two of you, side-by-side. His stomach wound sizzles and burns. Suddenly he takes off again, heading right for you.

You aim and fire.

He's moving too fast to hit the head, but your laser still cuts clean through his shell, stem to stern. Something inside didn't like that, sparking and spitting a gout of fire out of the new wounds.

Amazingly, he stumbles and trips, slamming into you, but his grip fumbles. He missed. He slides past, skidding to an ungainly halt.

And then the hatches on his shell pop off, whirl violently, and streak toward you and Em. The first catches you straight on, sending you stumbling back as a second and third batter you.

Em surges past, slapping the rest shell plates away with all his strength--unfortunately leaving him open as an orange energy field, thrown from BENEATH Tumult's shell, strikes him in the side, leaving him off-balance as Terapin fires the works--missiles, grenades, lasers and plasma. Your turn to cover your partner as you fire a chaff missile into the works and follow it up with a coil, thrashing it left and right to block the projectiles. Your lance takes the brunt of the laser and plasma assault as Em catches his balance and returns to a ready stance.

Tumult's shell regenerates its hatches as he squares off again, keeping those eyes fixed on you.

You told him you weren't going to get hit by that twice.

He charges Em this time, the dumb bastard--he actually grabs the brilliant flame blade, trying to brute force Em down and out.

You run up, angle your last Lockon Hunter up through his shell, and fire.

The results are immediate. A chain of explosions rocks through Tumult's shell, and he turns to backhand you--Em dives underneath him and slams his flambard into one of the dash thrusters. The explosions multiply tenfold, and Tumult turns and jabs him in the chin before lopsidedly jetting away.

He ejects his shell just in time as all of the ammunition inside cooks off at once.

That orange projectile--another shell--hums into existence on his back. He doesn't waste time throwing it again, charging right after it.

Not this fucking time.

Your capacitors were drained near-dry from trying to hit the cabin, but funny how a high-speed crash throws around a lot of kinetic energy. You're out of harm's way in an eyeblink, and before he even gets one, you're right back on him, zipping back and forth as you plant your misericorde to the hilt in his eye.

He doesn't scream, or reel, or panic, instead turning to hit you blind, deadly to the end.

That's when Emerald buries HIS flambard to the hilt in Tumult's back. The shield tries to regenerate over it, failing as Tumult stumbles forward, the head of the blazing sword jutting out of his front. He turns, slowly, clenching a fist to bring back into him--

You rip the misericorde from his optic, slamming your fist into it and unloading the last of your capacitors into his face. His body seizes and jerks, going rigid as Em draws his dueling sabers from either shoulder. He rakes them across his back as you cock back your arm and plunge the hi-beam misericorde up into his chin. His hands slowly fall as his body slackens. Neither of you stop as you draw your lance and swing with all your might, and Em slams his lo-beams in through the shorting energy shield.

Finally, the titanic maverick twitches one last time and goes completely limp. You both slowly back away from the ruined hulk, panting for breath. Em gasps raggedly, the servos on one side of his face misfiring as you fall backward and barely catch yourself.

"Crankshaft, if my radio is still working," you rasp, "mission complete."
