starting a few minutes late, sorry bout that. I was wrestling with a uncooperative wireless printer. it won.

++
You should be dead.

Every single fiber of your wrecked being screams it at you. You should be dead. Your fighter is gone, your last mission a failure- the only reason it wasn't a total catastrophe was because you killed yourself to buy the rest of them time to get away.

You damn near killed Merlin too- you owe her a lot more than some damn cake, you tell yourself. It was stupid, but it was the only hope you had. Still, that doesn't excuse it. You've got to be more careful with her. You chose this, you can control what kind of shit you get into- but she gets dragged along regardless of what she wants.

You should be dead, yet, somehow you aren't. Scorched lungs still painfully draw breath, splintered bones and shattered muscles dutifully report their damage to your painkiller-soaked brain. Even through that, though, pain is almost all you can feel- which, you suppose, is a better choice than the alternative, but right now you're not so sure.

1/2
>>
You're flying, of that much you're certain. Probably in a big medical evacuation bird, a -141 probably, headed god knows where. South, somewhere, you’re sure. Multiple IV bags hang above your resting place, dripping their contents into you.

Your grasp on consciousness is tenuous, at best. Even now, the sedatives in your system are making it hard to stay awake- warring with the pain in an effort to send you back to blissful unconsciousness. It's a fight they're rapidly winning, of that you're sure.

You don't dream much, and when you do, you only infrequently remember anything worth telling. Maybe it's the wounds, or maybe it's the cocktail of drugs being pumped into you, but you dream deeply and vividly for the first time in what seems like decades.

[What do you dream of?]

[home/early career/early days with the squadron]

It's less of a dream, really, and more of a series of very vivid memories. You're familiar with the term 'life flashing before your eyes' of course, but this is different. They're dreams, but not proper ones, without all the weirdness usually entailed in dreams.

You remember being a kid in California, while your dad served with the 1/9 marines. You remember the time you and your brothers broke into his liquor cabinet- and you vividly remember why, to this day, you cannot drink johnny walker. Your house was always full of life- your mom wasn't in the navy very long after you were born, just a couple of years, and you don't remember them at all. You still remember both of your parents being strict, your dad almost manically so, and neither of them being able to put anything off for a second longer than it needed to be.

You remember your grandma, who laughed when you said you wanted to be a fighter pilot. You were too young to understand her prejudices then, and by now you laugh at her tragically outdated way of thinking. Part of you still hates how your sister was always her favorite anyway.

You remember the night Rex told the parents he was dropping out of school and enlisting in the air force. You remember telling them, just a few weeks later, that you'd been accepted to Annapolis. That seemed to mitigate their anger at Rex, some.

You remember graduation, with the whole family, minus Rex there, your dad in his dress uniform and your mom holding your sister's hand and waving. You couldn't wave back, of course, but you still remember how proud you were.

1/2?
>>
You remember flight school, and the heart-stopping moment when your basic instructor realized you were better with the bird than he was- and him flatly stating he was going to suggest that you be shifted to multiengine birds, effectively ending your dreams of being a fighter pilot. You remember how you'd cried that night, hot tears of frustration as you watched your dreams sail out the window because of one bitter old man.

You remember seeing your advanced flight training assignment and laughing when you made lead-in for the F-14, despite everything. Your mom wouldn't tell you she pulled some strings until much, much later.

You remember meeting Orion- your first RIO, as you were assigned to Your squadron. Neither of you had any idea what you were getting into when you reported and found out you were part of a navy program to determine if mixed squadrons were viable in the current era. Both of you hit the town that night, flush with a sense of achievement- the first men to fly in a witches squadron in the navy since who knows when.

You remember meeting Patty Mitchell- Maverick. How her first action was to comment on how Orion looked like he'd be fun in bed. Neither of you was real sure how you'd deal with her, but she turned into a hell of a wingmate- just as willing to get into shit with you in the air as she was on the ground, and you'll never let her live down the mud wrestling episode.

You remember meeting Ice, and knowing the trouble was about to start when her first action as your incoming CO was to read you and Orion the riot act- tellingly leaving Maverick out of the ass chewing.

2/3
>>
You remember the night Orion turned in his wings and resigned- another low-level, high-speed pass over an air control tower led to another ass chewing, this time with the implication that the both of you were unfit for flight duty. You'd let it roll off your back, used to such accusations, though more back-handed, from your grandmother. Orion didn't- he turned in his wings and requested re-assignment as soon as possible, pending him resigning his commission.

You're disturbed by muffled voices. “Sir, I don't think we can.. “

“I Don't care, doc. Can you keep him stable for a few days? A week?”

“Maybe, sir, but we can't...”

“That's all I need. I've got some favors to call in. Get him stable, dig that metal out of him if you can.”

then, addressed to you- “Don't worry son, I've got a couple of old war friends that still owe me a favor or two. We'll get you back in the saddle in no time.”

You fade back to sleep.

No, it's the implication that somehow our votes are less valid because they aren't all sunshine and happiness.

I mean, shit, the dude almost just died, lost his aircraft and nearly lost his RIO, and is having weird vivid drug-enhanced dreams, a nightmare or two wouldn't be at all unexpected.

[First meeting with Merlin]

Dreams are strange things. You wake once, an adrenaline surge coursing through you at some half-remembered nightmare. The sedatives knock you back down a second later, their grip on you hardly broken by one fear inspired rally of your adrenal glands.

You're in Ice's office ashore- called up from a mission planning session to meet your replacement RIO. You've already made up your mind that you don't like him, whoever he is. No one, but no one, can replace Orion, as far as you're concerned. Ice hasn't said anything, and the air is pretty tense- it's no secret you're holding her responsible for him leaving, and she sure doesn't seem to care for you much either.

The door opens, and, instead of some young ensign with no flight time, you see a pair of young girls walk in. they almost look like they're related- both keep their Brown hair short, though only one wears the wings of a witch- the other has wings like... yours.

“What's the deal, ma'am?” you hear yourself say. “You said my RIO was coming up?”

“I-I think s-she meant me” One of the small witches says, saluting. “E-ensign Samantha W-wells.”

“Well, I guess life just got a bit more interesting, then.” You say to Ice, turning in place. “With all due respect ma'am is this...?”

“She's your RIO Bishop. Try not to traumatize her too much, and who knows? Maybe you'll actually be good for something.”

“Ma'am.” you say, tersely. “I have a flight plan to finish up and file.”

1/2
>>
You're woken by voices again- Bandages across your eyes prevent you from seeing who's talking, but you recognize Nixon's voice.

“My god, Richard.” one, an older female says. “He's... I can do this, but it will take time.”

“How long?” Nixon asks.

“A day? More?” She says.

“Just tell me what you need, Georgette.” Nixon says. “I don't want to lose him- he's a good kid. Took his bird into a pack of flankers to buy some other pilots time to get away. Didn't have a snowflake's chance in hell. Did it anyway.”

“They're all good kids, Dick.” another man's voice says. “They always have been, even back in our day.”

“Yeah, yeah. You're right. Mack.”

You fade out again, only to wake up what seems like seconds later. The soft peep of an EKG machine mixes with sounds from outside- apparently, the window is open- and a soft, almost imperceptible ticking noise.

[x] Open eyes, look around.

Experimentally, you open your eyes. Thankfully, they're not covered by bandages anymore- and seem to work just as well as they did before- though it's hard to tell when you're staring at a ceiling.

The room is one of the better ones- it's not a burn ward, for which you're thankful. The pain hasn't started registering yet, but it will, you're sure. Your right arm is kind of stiff, so you shove yourself into a sitting position with your left, noting the IV drip going into your arm on the right side- probably the reason why it's stiff.

The room is relatively bare and sterile, as hospital rooms tend to be- it's not a hotel, after all.

Next to you, quietly knitting sits an older-looking woman- maybe in her late 50s? You can't tell. Her hair in distinct twin pigtails, she looks, for a terrifying second like captain Blackwell, though the captain never wore her hair like that.

“Oh!” she says, looking up at you. “One second, Richard and Nicholas wanted me to get them when you woke up!”

She sets her knitting needles down carefully, walking across the room in a few short steps and leaning out the door. “Richard?” She calls. “Nicholas? He's awake.”

She sits back down before either of the men enter the room- Nixon is in uniform, and you could swear you've seen the other guy's face before, but you just can't place it.

“Glad to see you back up, son.” Nixon says. “Gave us a hell of a scare there, for a while.”

[] Glad to be back, sir

[x] What happened, sir?

“What happened sir?” You say, sitting up a little more and saluting the CINCPAC, who just waves it off. “And I kind of expected to be drowning in hugs right now. Where's my squadron?”

“I suspect you already know, son. And I'm not really the hugging type.” He says, with a bit of a chuckle. “Though you gave us a scare when Georgette was healing you- long story short, there's bits of fibersteel buried in your ribs. Probably saved your life during the crash, but it'll play merry hell with you when you're my age.”

“Sounds like fun, sir.” you say, unconsciously rubbing your side. “My squadron? My RIO?”

“Both got out fine, son. The reds never penetrated the pocket's airspace, and last we heard, the better part of the force sent up in that attack got back fine.” He says. “We don't know what it's like right now- the reds are jamming everything, practically, and the land lines are pretty full, but your unit was still reporting combat-ready this morning.”

“How long have I been out, sir?” You ask.

“About a week, now.” Nixon says. “We've been pulling flowers out of this room for the past three days. You'd think the desk would learn to just tell the delivery boys to put 'em there. Had to finally post a marine guard on the damn door.” He laughs.

>>
“Flowers, sir?” You ask, as the two men shuffle around to let a doctor and his assistant in.

“Yep. All kinds of people sent 'em. That mission was covered by a few of the big news networks, and two of them caught your fight almost in full. We didn't release your unit, or name, but...” He shrugs. “Care of the navy, and someone didn't get the memo to not send 'em all here.”

“When will I be able to get back to it, sir?” You say, as the doctor pulls the IV needle and makes his notes on your board. You get the feeling he's kind of miffed that this heal witch was able to do what he'd have never been able to.

“That depends on you, son.” Nixon says. “You're a bit of a big hero now, you know. And boeing aren't the only people who want you to fly their new toys all over the sky and kill loads of reds with them.”

[x] What?

“What?” You ask, completely forgetting to add 'sir' onto the end of it. If Nixon cares, he doesn't say anything.

“Well, let's see. Boeing's team has a new tomcat they want you to test in combat, that group with Chance-Vought wants you to test out their new bird, Northrop-McDonnell has a naval variant of the 23 they want you to test... and I think that's it.” He shrugs. “The letters are on my desk, but it all boils down to the same thing. Those companies want their new fighters tested in combat, and after CNN played the uncut footage of your furball with the Russians, you're #1 on their candidates to do it.”

“That's kind of overwhelming, sir.” You say. “And I refuse to do it without my RIO. Merlin's the reason I survived that scrap, her and Katya. Without 'em I'd be lucky to have the wreckage of my fighter as a headstone.”

Nixon nods. “They're all two-seaters, if I remember correctly, but I'd have to look.” He grins. “I won't lie, son, I'm kind of jealous. It's not every day three aerospace companies request you, by name, to fly their superadvanced prototype jets.”

I was in that thread when planefag posted this, and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it!
>>
He looks over at Georgette and the other man. “And I'm being rude, I see. Lieutenant commander Bishop, this is Nicholas Mackintosh and his wife, Georgette. Nick's my old skipper from the California. Nick, Georgette, this is Lieutenant Commander Frank Bishop, flying with VF-3 off the Saratoga.”

Georgette smiles. “Ah!” she says. “So he's the one Emile told us so much about!”

She looks at you. “Takes quite a person to impress her like that!” she laughs. “I'm glad Richard called us!”

Nixon laughs. “Seems his name gets around a bit. Well son, you need to get cleared for flight, and then I need to see you in my office. We'll get you squared away with a jet and back to your unit as soon as possible, ok?”

As he turns to walk out, he pauses. “Oh, and if I'm not in my office, stop by the house. I'd like to introduce ya to the family at some point.”

[x] Sounds like a plan sir! And thanks for fixing me up, ma'am!

“Sounds good to me, sir.” You say, slowly pivoting so you can stand up to get changed when they leave. “I'd like to put in a call to the squadron if I can, too.”

Nixon shrugs. “You can try, but most of the land lines are tied up since nothing else gets through. Communications have been a mess in that area since just after they invaded.” He grimaces. “We'd have punched a call to them about you through sooner, but....” he trails off.

“So.... they don't even know if I’m alive?” You say, suddenly worried.

“They should, you weren't MIA very long, I'm sure they've been notified. We'll try and hurry you up there, though- I'll have a bird waiting to take you to the mainland after dinner, if you want.” He says.

You nod. “I'd appreciate that, sir.”

It takes you about five minutes to get dressed- a freshly laundered set of khakis. Your doctor seems somewhat miffed when he signs off on your flight status, but he doesn’t say anything about it. You clear the hospital shortly after that, and on the way out they hand you a tiny glass jar full of metal shards. “Picked these out of you, sir.” the nurse says. “The doctor wanted us to make sure you got 'em. Said all you pilots tended to forget you were mortal.”

Jackass doctors.

Outside, a Jeep sits, waiting for you.

The driver, a young marine, doesn't salute when you near it. “Reckon I'm your driver, sir.” he says, nonchalantly. “I'm supposed to drop ya off at the admiral's place for evening chow in a few hours, but whatcha wanna do till then?”

Get some stuff for the girls (girl bear for Gunnybear; Slider would like that). Maybe find a payphone and call the folks while we do that: let them know Frank's okay. If we can't get a call into the squad, maybe we can to Fronk's parents.

Might as well return bearing gifts. Also, getting a call up to the frozen north would be good. Need to make sure everyone is OK.

[x] Well, I guess I can take care of Christmas shopping

“Well, I have to somehow prevent a pack of teenage girls from killing me on my return.” You say, mock philosophically. “And nothing says 'please don't use your sparkly glittery bullshit to murder me' like lots of presents.”

The marine laughs. “We can go hit up the mall, sir. It's usually not too packed just yet.”

He's right- this close to Christmas, you figured it'd be a complete mad-house, but it seems like it's fairly quiet. Well, relatively speaking. It's fairly well-stocked, little bit of every kind of shop in here.

The marine looks at you dubiously. “I sure hope you don't plan on making me haul around sixty bags of shit, sir. I get enough of that from my girlfriend.”

You laugh at the look on his face.

[ok, so, what do you want to buy for everyone?]

Merlin gets a bunch of cake mixes and the promise we'll spend afternoons baking together between flights. And a handmade gift card promising we'll be around to make them.
Slider gets a really cheesy men pinup calendar, and beneath that in the box a flashbang and a gift card to someplace where she can buy a good pair of boots or something.
Ice gets a space heater. It's practical and the hut could use it.
Maverick gets another men's pinup calendar and a new pair of aviators. And a deck of cards with some kind of lewd design.
Goose gets another beefcake calendar just so we can see her get embarrassed and then matching aviators with Maverick and something else. Slippers? I'm out of ideas here.
A-10 Witches get matching something. Hats and scarves?
Bitchtits gets a really good coffee mug and maybe a coffee maker or something to go with it. Maybe some chocolate too. I dunno.
Katya gets a couple sets of casual clothes. She flew here with her uniform and probably hasn't gotten anything to wear that wasn't military issue.

[man, what a list]

You take a second to think. Off the top of your head, you can think of about a hundred items you want, but you really don't have the time to pull that off.

You decide to work down the list methodically. Slider gets a female stuffed bear to keep gunnybear company, a case of superglue, which you're sure you're going to regret buying her later, and the cheesiest pinup calendar you can find.

Merlin gets a brand new gameboy, all the games you can lay hands on, six or seven boxed of batteries, a big blanket, and a new coat- an exact replica of yours. You'll have to stop by later to pick it up, but you're pretty sure she'll like it. Your biggest worry is she'll take it as an excuse to keep yours, and give you the new one!

For Katya, you get a very nice, very expensive traveling chess set. Hand carved pieces, a padded case, and a stone board. For shits and giggles, you also buy her a baseball cap with USA blazoned across the front.

You end up getting Maverick a calendar like the one you got slider, as well as the most offensive t-shirt you can find. She might not wear it, but it's funny anyway.

1/2
>>
You hang up on for a few minutes on Goose, eventually settling for an over sized stuffed animal and a big blanket.

Ice is more of a challenge. You walk past a lingerie store and can conjure up some mental images, but since not dying when you get home is pretty high up on your list, you decide to skip it. Instead, you get her a baseball cap with “boss lady” embroidered across the front, a pair of hilariously oversized fuzzy slippers.

You get rand and Rudel a matching pair of Alabama baseball caps, and the Colonel gets the nicest NAVY mug you can find on short notice.

Then you stop by a different store and buy all of them several pairs of legwarmers, slippers, and some really nice damn robes. Heaters aside, it gets cold in that little damn building.

The stop by a pay phone is less rewarding- trying to call the offices on Elmendorf give you a fast-busy signal, and no one answers at home. You'll have to try again later, you think.

[x] wait! One more thing!

“I need one more thing.” You say to your driver, having him stop at a class six. Inside, you find exactly what you were after- three bottles of scotch whiskey- two bottles of Johnnie walker Red and a bottle of 18 year old glenfiddich

You also, on reflection, get that lacy underwear. Worst case, you never give it to her. Best case?

Dinner at the Nixon's house turns out to be a fairly small affair- just a family dinner with some friends. His wife, pat, turns out to be an excellent cook in her own right, though the chicken is slightly dry.

You're sure to profusely thank Georgette- though she just laughs and says it was her pleasure. Her husband doesn't talk too much, and you still can't place his face.

After dinner, the three of you head back to Nixon’s office, where there's three letters sitting on his desk.

He taps them as he sits down. “These are from the three companies about you.” He says, leaning back in his chair and looking at you. “They all boil down to the same thing- they saw that footage of you in the fight with those flankers and got hold of the unclassified parts of your record, and decided you were the man for the job. We'd like to get you back into the fight as soon as possible, so as soon as you're done here, you'll be bound for the mainland, and from there back to Alaska. I want you back on elmendorf within 24 hours son.”

“That's going to be pretty hard, sir.” You say, grimacing. “How long to get those birds up to speed?”

Nixon chuckles. “They're ready to go now. Which ever ones you don't take will go to conventional testing.”

1/2
>>
He offers you a cigar, which you politely decline.

“Alright son, here's the deal. There's the new cat, it's a revision of your old one. Swapped around some hardpoints, did some work with the engines, that kind of thing. Should be pretty familiar to you. Can't carry as much as the other two, and they just can't make her work with the more advanced stuff coming out of china lake, but she's no slouch. The YF-23N is our version of the strike eagle. She's fast in straight lines and can carry a hell of a payload, but she's no dogfigher- you'd never be able to do what you did with your tomcat against those flankers in her. But she's stealthy too, and can handle all the weapons those egg heads at china lake are making.”

“The last one, the chance-vought bird- is the most advanced aircraft we have flying. She's fast, stealthy, and she can turn and roll in a closet. She can haul everything plus the kitchen sink, and everything coming out of the development labs and then some but she's a demanding ride. It'll take a lot of time to get used to her- she can do all the crap you're used to doing, but we don't know if you'll be able to right off the bat.”

He looks at you. “Which one you interested in, son? We can have you on the way inside the hour, if you want.”

[] Tell me more about the YF-23N
[] I want to hear about the XF-02B
[] What about the XF-14E?

Seconding. I mean, conventional tactics has us chucking missiles BVR while the witches get into the nitty gritty but that would preclude us ever going big damn hero like we're supposed to.

Another point, do any of the prototypes have shield focuses or anything else to integrate well with a witch RIO? If they saw the CNN footage they should've seen our AMRAAMS and 25mm shells glowing blue, and a goddamn shield on the side of our plane. I'm pretty sure those R&D eggheads would rightly see that as a gamechanger in aerial warfare and do something about it in their designs.

This is war. We need the nastiest aircraft we can get to win it with as few friendly casualties as possible. Plus, as >>21785192 said, we've given them a hell of a test run in their old bird, even though some of the data was lost in the crash.

Oh man, I hope those ground pounders knew enough to pull the flight recorders, but I doubt they did. Damnit.

Take the XF-02. Between Merlin's witchy powers and our bird wrangling skill, it's our best bet at kicking ass and keeping our friends alive.
>>
>>21785257
But the problem with the XF-02 is that we'll be at reduced capability until we learn how to fly it. And that definitely will be a problem since we won't be able to learn it before going into combat.

If we had like a week to get to know her, I'd say the 02 in a heartbeat, but having to take her straight into the fight makes me kinda hesitant... but we're (probably) a Gnome, so we should be able to handle it.

Merlins the practical sort and she went even more gaga over the new tech than we did.

>>
This is >>21785257 again. Here's one more thought: The Russians have seen our prototype Tomcat fighting for its life on CNN. They know its capabilities, and they are undoubtedly putting together a counter to it. If we want to live, we need to up the strength of our game. The YF-23 can't survive in a dogfight like our old bird can, and stealth can be broken through, eventually. We need an aircraft that can triumph at all ranges, and in all phases of a battle.

Plus, it's Chance-Vought. Vought made the F4U Corsair back in WWII, and it was a legendarily effective aircraft. It was basically the P-51 of the Pacific, and it had an 11 to 1 kill ratio. I want to see what they've created to make their grand re-entrance to combat aircraft.

[x] What about the XF-14E?

“Well, the -23N doesn't really sound like something I'd really get a lot of mileage out of, sir.” You say, shaking your head. “If anything, I learned I've gotta be able to dive in when it gets right down to it, and not just zoom and boom.”

Nixon nods. “fair enough.” He says, handing you a pair of binders. “Those have most of the things you'll need to know. In 'em. They're doctored for security, of course, but it should be good enough.”

The reading proves interesting. The XF-14 deletes the two topside hardpoints- later testing showed that launching a missile while in a climb could cause the engines to ingest a bunch of rocket exhaust and flame out. The pylons have been swapped around, again, with four standard points on the center of the bird, two on each of the engine nacelles, and a pair of oddly-shaped Y-racks on the wing gloves. All told, it gives the bird an impressive hauling capability, though at full load it's ceiling and speed are both severely limited. Similarly, landing at full weight, especially on a carrier, could cause damage to the gear. It's been worked over- again- and boasts marginally improved agility and slightly uprated armor, as well as increased range over your old bird.

1/2
>>
The XF-02B is called the Wyvern, and it's about as space-age as anything you've seen. The wings boast four standard hardpoints each, and those are further expanded by a pair of missile bays in the engine nacelles, capable of handling 4 smaller AAMs or 2 larger, medium range ones. There's a centerline bay as well, which can handle just about everything in inventory, short of a daisy cutter. In a 'clean' configuration, she's a little more stealthy than your old cat. An additional note on weapons states the bird is designed to be compatible with newly-developed weapons systems at least 15 years from now. However, test piloting notes show that, even with a skilled RIO and state of the art fly by wire, the bird is a bit of a handful, and took some getting used to, especially in high-speed flight.

It's a difficult choice, everything considered.

Don't forget, we're ALREADY at the highs of technological effectiveness. The XF-14 is "Old and busted" only compared to the prototypes; it's still more modern and effective than everything the Russians have in service at the moment, and would be on par with whatever they put out later.

>>
>>21785592

Yeah, but do you really think they won't up the ante now that they've seen an American aircraft take on 20-1 odds vs Flankers and win? For all they know, we're about to mass produce that aircraft and start fielding squadrons of them. They have to come up with either a technological or doctrinal counter to that aircraft, or they have to accept that they will never have air superiority again once it gets mass produced.

We also just shot to the top of the list of pilots they need to kill. When they find out we're alive and back in the field, they'll start sending their newest toys and tactics against us, both to eliminate an enemy ace, and to test them against the enemy's best.

We need to be better than whatever they're making now.

>>
We also need to consider the psychological side of things.

What are they Russian pilots going to think when stories of a new black bird pops up and start wrecking their shit after the last one took 10:1 odds to neutralize? Morale is always an important factor to consider.
>>
>>21785667
>>21785651
>20-1 odds and win
>we were on the edge of SAM cover

There were more factors in that fight than your remember.

And one pilot pulling it off does not mean they're about to churn out a new superplane to combat it. They didn't design a plane to specifically kill Hartmann, remember.
>>
>>21785432
>[] XF-02

While XF-14 may be better than our old bird, the surprise has been blown. Any strike force sent against us in the XF-14 will be less effective than if we were still airborne, the XF-02 will make them roll over and beg for mercy.

We fly the best, because we are the best.
>>
>>21785651
>20:1
It was 10:1. There were 20 aircraft against Fronk-Merlin & Katya.
>>
It was 12 to 1 odds, 24 to 2 before you simplify it. Katya was with us. And we didn't kill all the Reds, we were rendered combat ineffective and as good as dead before Rifleman hit them with the Patriots. Plus, the Reds probably think we're dead.
>>
>>21785690

There were many factors, one being that Katya had more kills in the furball than us if I remember correctly.

But assuming the Soviets don't have better planes in development is also foolish
>>
Notice: we're currently on page 7.
>>
>>21785690

Yes, there were more factors to that fight than I mentioned. But that doesn't change the fact that no other aircraft out there could have done what we did.

They can't afford to assume it's just one pilot. They have to prepare for the worst, and assume that was the combat trial of an aircraft that was about to go into mass production. It'd be like Russia not coming up with a counter to the F-22 when we started test flights with it IRL.

Surprise, they have the PAK-FA and are starting to mass produce SU-30MKIs, and we aren't even at war with them.

“Well, sir, I can't say I don't love the tomcat, but I think it's time to let it go.” You say, closing both binders slowly.

Nixon nods. “I kind of thought you'd say that, son. I'll send them a call, have them start getting it loaded up. You'll have to stop by China lake on the way up, Dr. Wells' team there has something you're supposed to pick up. I'll have a C-20 ready for you at...” A knocking at the door interrupts him. “Yes?”

Georgette steps in. “Sorry to interrupt, Richard. Nicholas and I need to get home before it gets too late, Emile promised she'd call. And I had something to give to our young friend here.”

She smiles as she hands you a paper-wrapped book and a gorgeous, blue and gold scarf. “The scarf is yours.” she says. “The book is for the Russian girl you helped out.”

“How...” You say, confused. She smiles again. “Saw it on the news, and Richard talked about it some. I wish I had known her grandmother better.”

“I'll see you later, Dick.” the man says. Damnit, why can you still not place that face? “Golf tomorrow?”

Nixon nods. “Yeah, sounds good. I don't know if I'll have time to play all eighteen, we may have to settle for nine Nick.”

Nick shrugs. “That's fine with me. I'll see you in the morning then, Dick.”

He looks at you. “You take care up there, Bishop.”

As they leave, Nixon lets out a low whistle. “You must have impressed her, son.” he says. “Those scarves are hard to get.”

It's really a hell of a nice scarf.
