You are a veteran adventurer, recently recruited to the 765 Professionals Adventurers' Guild to serve as a "Producer", or mentor to the guild rookies. And it looks like the headquarters of your new guild is on fire.

After getting lost, getting mugged, getting paid, and getting lunch, you and Azusa set off back to 765Pro HQ. As you get nearer, you notice a plume of smoke rising into the air at the end of the street.

Rushing ahead, you find that it is indeed coming from the guildhall, the windows billowing forth dense clouds of smoke. From within, you hear cries of panic and confusion.

>Oh shit, wat do?

The best time of the week is here! I needed this after finals.

>Head toward the smoke and ask someone what's going on

There's no time to waste -- your new guildmates are in danger!

You push through the growing crowd of onlookers and dash through the door, only to collide with a pair of lithe figures headed in the opposite direction. Your momentum knocks them both prone with a synchronized yelp, and you barely manage to stop yourself stepping on them. Through the smoke, you think you can make out a pair of cockeyed ponytails between the two on the ground in front of you.

"Ami, Mami, is that you?"

"A-ah, Nii-chan? Yeah, it's us."

"How is it in there? Is anyone hurt?"

"Um, n-no, I don't think so."

"Good. You two wait for me outside, we'll need to get a headcount."

"R-right!"

The twins scramble to their feet and duck past you out the door. You cautiously make your way a bit further into the guildhall. Between the density of the smoke and its acrid sting causing your eyes to water, you can barely see your hand in front of your face, but oddly enough you notice that it seems fairly cool inside the guildhall.

"Hey, everybody! It's me, I'm by the door! Follow my voice! If you need help, call out and I'll come get you!"

You hear movement deeper within, and a few voices of acknowledgement. Nobody voices a need for help, which is good, but after a few seconds you hear a loud crash.

You call into the guildhall, "Who was that? Are you alright?"

"*cough*cough* That was *cough* me", you hear Haruka say. "I'm fine *cough*cough*."

Her subsequent cry of pain tells a different story.

"Haruka! What happened?!"

"I *cough* think I sprained my *cough*cough* ankle...Don't *cough* worry, I'll heal it *cough*cough*, just give me *cought* a minute."

Tense seconds pass as gray sillhouettes filter past you toward the door; you count five in total. Assuming Ritsuko's still out with her group, that leaves one unaccounted for besides Haruka.
All you hear from Haruka's direction during this time is a staccato volley of hacking and wheezing.

"It's no use *cough*, I keep *cough*cough* choking on the smoke and *cought* can't *cough* focus enough!"

"Hang on, Haruka, I'm coming!"

Wrapping a handkerchief over your mouth and nose, you head into the guildhall.

You cautiously make your way into the guildhall, hands outstretched to make your way through by feel. You don't have a particularly clear mental image of the guildhall yet, having only gotten here yesterday, but you're pretty sure the area Haruka's in is the lounge space. You imagine she probably tripped over the coffee table...

You manage to eventually make your way to where Haruka is, sitting on the floor cradling her ankle. You stoop down to help her up.

"Just what happened in here?"

"I don't *cough* know, it just got *cough*cough* really smoky all of a sudden!"

Odd...

With most of the girls out, it's gotten oddly quiet in the guildhall...but you do notice a sound coming from close by: labored breathing, wheezing, and weak coughing. It sounds like it's coming from one of the couches.

"Haruka, do you hear that? Is there someone on that couch over there?"

"I hear it! *cough*cough* I think *cough* Miki was napping on that couch *cough*cough* but I thought she woke up *cough*"

Could it really be that she's actually managing to sleep through this? Well, you've yet to see her awake the handful of times you've been in the guildhall, so you suppose it's not impossible...

>Come back for her after you help Haruka get out.
>It's not good to let her sleep in this smoke, wake her up before you start heading out with Haruka.

No, there's no way even a lazy bum like Miki could sleep through an emergency like this!

"Haruka, she must've passed out from the smoke! Give me a minute, I'll be right back!"

You feel your way over to the couch, following the sound of Miki's breathing. As you reach out to get your bearings, your hand encounters something warm and soft.

"Mmmrm...mmrmrm, you pervert...*wheeze*..."

You snatch your hand back as though it were a hot stove rather than a girl in front of you. You cautiously reach back out to slip your arm under Miki's shoulders, and looping your other under her legs you sling her over your shoulder.

"Alright, Haruka, I've got her. Can you crawl over to me? I'll help you up and you can lean on me as we walk out."

You suddenly hear coughing just behind you as the warm mass on your shoulder spasms violently. "Aw, Producer, aren't you a big hero nano~"

"Ah! Miki! You're awake! Can you walk?"

"Oh, don't *cough* mind me, I'm just fine right *cough* here nano~"

She sounds fine...but fuck it, she'll probably be easier to deal with this way, and besides, with how much smoke she breathed, it's possible she may not have the strength to make it out on her own after all.

You hear shuffling as Haruka gets closer. Snapping your fingers, you call out to her. "My hand's here, grab hold and I'll pull you up."

You feel Haruka grab your forearm with both hands, and you pull her upright. She stumbles a bit, but you catch her. "Put your arm around my neck -- watch out for Miki, she's on my other shoulder -- and lean on me as we walk out, ok?"

Haruka's only verbal response is another coughing fit, but you feel her arms form a tight loop stretched diagonally across your torso. Grabbing hold of her firmly by the waist, you set off toward the door.

"What's with all the smoke?" Miki asks blearily. "It's *cough*cough* annoying, nano~"

You feel her shift a bit, and suddenly a strong wind whips through the guildhall blowing away the smoke in your immediate vicinity.

"Miki, was that you?"

"Yep, nano~"

"Uh...thanks."

"No *cough* problem, nano~"

With the smoke cleared, finding your way back to the door is easy. You emerge out onto the street (where the smoke, though thin, is still lingering) to see Ritsuko emerging from the crowd, Yayoi, Chihaya, and Takane in tow.

"What on earth is going on here?!"

"I don't know, I just got here myself, really."

You are fully aware of the irony of this statement, standing as you are with a girl on either arm, just emerging from a smoking building. Ritsuko is also clearly aware, given the skeptical eyebrow she cocks your way.

"I'm guessing that fire was involved," you add helpfully as you adjust Miki's weight on your shoulder. "Must've been a really small one, though, because it felt quite cool in there."

"Really..." Ritsuko turns to the group of girls gathered in the street -- you notice Ami and Mami are not among them. "Do any of you have anything to add?"

Iori looks like she's about to say something, then apparently thinks better of it and looks away with a worried look on her face. Ritsuko seems about to pursue this, then Yukiho raises a hand tentatively.

"Um...I'm not too sure what exactly it was, but, um, I think I saw Ami and Mami playing with something right before it got all smoky. And I think the smoke came from where they were playing at, b-but I'm not too sure. The room filled up really fast..."

Ritsuko looks around. "And where are those two anyway?"

You could tell Ritsuko that you saw the twins leaving...but on the other hand, you could keep that detail a secret, let the twins owe you a favor. You make a mental note to grill them on the incident later.

"I wouldn't worry about them, Ritsuko, I'm sure they'll turn up eventually. For now, shouldn't we worry more about the building? Y'know, the one with all the smoke?"

At this point the smoke coming from the windows is pretty thin and wispy, wafting lazily out rather than the dense billows you saw when you first arrived.

Ritsuko thinks for a moment. "Iori?"

"Yes?!" Iori seems to jump at her name, and is suddenly standing bolt upright.

"Do you have any spells that could help find the source of the smoke? By the sound of it, it's probably a very small, localized fire, and I don't want to soak the entire guildhall if we can help it."

"I-I prepared detect elements this morning, but I d-dropped my components pouch on the way out, and I'll need a, a bit of charcoal or something like that with a connection to fire to find a fire source."

Ritsuko fishes around in her pack and brings out an alchemical match, which she tosses to Iori. "Will that work?"

"Y-yeah..."
>>
>>22062912
Iori clears her throat and pulls the wand from her sash. Holding the match in the palm of her hand, she waves the wand over it, muttering some incomprehensible incantation. After a few seconds, the match disappears in a burst of pink sparkles, which drift gently down around Iori for a moment as her eyes flash briefly with pink and orange light.

She peers at the building intently. "I don't really see any strong fire presence...just the stove in the kitchen area...I think I might need to go inside, the walls might be interfering with the aetheric resonance."

Ritsuko sighs. "Well, let's go then."

She walks up to you, still standing in the doorway with Haruka on your arm and Miki slung over the shoulder. "Excuse me, Mister Hero, could I get through?"

"Ah, of course." You set Miki down and step aside to clear the way.

You consider accompanying them, but on second thought there's probably not too much need for it, and you've already spent more than enough time in that smoke already.

It strikes you that everyone who went with you to clear out the goblin camp yesterday is here right now, so you take this opportunity to distribute the payment you picked up from the duke's palace this morning. You also check to see how everyone's doing; apart from Haruka's ankle (which she fixes up herself after you set her down), the worst is just some irritation from the smoke, which Azusa volunteers to cure. You protest when she comes to you, telling her to save her mana for more important things, but she insists.

After a few minutes, Ritsuko and Iori emerge from the building. Ritsuko seems to be holding a walnut-sized orb made of tin.

"Looks like it was some kind of alchemical smoke bomb, that's all. The guildhall will smell funny for awhile, but there shouldn't be any serious damage."

With a little wheedling, Ritsuko convinces Miki to blow away the rest of the smoke in the guildhall, and everyone heads back inside. Iori apparently can't stand the smell, and goes around waving her wand, trying to get rid of it with some kind of basic magic. The smoky odor in the guildhall is periodically covered by bursts of floral fragrance, but it doesn't appear to have any lasting effect.

After loitering about the guildhall for awhile, you decide you'd rather get out for some fresh air. Maybe you can track down the Futami twins and see what other mischief they might be getting up to.

Heading out into the street, you slowly start tracing their path, asking shopkeepers and the like if they saw the twins and which way they went. After a few hours, you manage to track them to a small square, some distance from the guildhall. There you see Ami standing atop a wooden crate, taking bows to a smattering of applause from the small crowd gathered around her.

"Thankee, thankee! Now, for my next trick, the amazing Ami will..." She trails off as she spies you leaning casually against a building at the edge of the square.

Don't pay attention to Ami right now, she's the distraction, Mami is the one who's up to something.

Smile knowingly at Ami, give her a relaxed wave and let her do her thing, and scan the area for Mami, I wouldn't be surprised if she was up to some mischief in the crowd.

You smile at Ami and wave her on to continue with her performance. You're more interested in what Mami's up to while Ami's up on her little stage, and scan the square for her.

"The amazing Ami...willl...need an audience volunteer! Let's see...how about...You! The handsome Nii-chan in the back there! Why don't you come on up? Come on, don't be shy, don't be shy!"

She's pointing right at you. With a sigh, you make your way through the crowd to Ami's makeshift stage.

"Now, Nii-chan, here's what you need to do, ok? You're going to have to crouch down like this, ok? And then the amazing Ami will cover you with this cloak! And then..."

As Ami sets up the trick, you continue to scan the area for Mami, and finally you spy her, slinking around the back of the crowd. You catch a few flashes of sunlight on metal -- is she cutting purses?

You also spot another flash of metal further off -- a city guard approaching down one of the streets leading to the square. Ami seems too preoccupied with you to notice.

"...And then, once the amazing Ami is done saying the magic words and pulls off the cloak, this handsome Nii-chan here will have turned into a cute little bunny rabbit!"

"A bunny rabbit?" You look pointedly in the direction of the approaching guard. "I don't think I'd want to be a bunny rabbit...they tend to get caught and eaten by things..."

Ami seems to catch your hint. "Ah, well that's a shame Nii-chan, because I think the crowd really wants to see a cute little bunny rabbit..."

Somehow she must have signaled to Mami, because the older twin slips deeper into the crowd, moving more quickly than before. You lose sight of her.

Ami snaps her fingers, apparently struck by inspiration. "Tell ya what, Nii-chan, instead of a bunny rabbit, how about a horse? A big white horse! And since the show's about over, the amazing Ami will ride you off into the sunset! How about that?"

"I guess I'd be ok with that," you say.

"Ok Nii-chan, now crouch down right here on the stage!" She steps off the crate, inviting you to take her place. You do as she says, and she covers you with a cloak.

From outside the cloak, you hear Ami chanting nonsense words (not the same sort of foreign-sounding gibberish Iori used in her incantation earlier today, but rather stuff like "Hocus pocus...abrakadabra..."). However, in your ear, you can hear her whispering: "When I pull off the cloak, run for the street on the right side of the square. Don't worry, nobody will notice."

As Ami pulls the cloak away, you jump off and sprint off to the right, as instructed. Ami and Mami are running right alongside you but the crowd's attention seems to be drawn in the opposite direction. Glancing back, you see a translucent image of Ami riding a white stallion off down the street on the other side of the square, waving back at the crowd and shouting, "Thankee, thankee! You've been a wonderful audience!"

After a couple minutes of running through winding streets and alleys, the three of you stop to catch your breath.

"So, girls. This is the second time today I've bailed you out of the consequences for your mischief..."

"Eh? Second time?"

"Oh yes. I know about your fun with the smoke bomb back at the guildhall. But I care about my dear rookies, so I let you run along your merry way. And I didn't tell Ritsuko that you did either."

The twins look a little hopeful at this. "So...Ritsuko doesn't know we did it?"

"Well...she doesn't *know*. Not for sure. But Yukiho said she spotted you messing with something right before the smoke started, so I think Ritsuko can put two and two together."

Ami tears at her hair -- "Gah, Yukipyon, you traitor!" -- but Mami just looks at you skeptically. "So basically what you're saying, Nii-chan, is that you didn't really bail us out of that one at all..."

"So you're saying you wouldn't mind if I verified Ritsuko's suspicions?"

"Well..."

First thing to do, gently bop them both on the head.

"Look, it's bad enough that you're doing these things, but you even let yourself get caught. Shame on you two. I expected better from you.

Look, let's make a deal. If I notice, suspect, or otherwise find out about any money you make through underhanded methods it goes straight to a charity of my choosing. But if you do a really good job, don't get caught, and it's completely untraceable you get to keep half, 40% goes to the guild, and I take 10% as a looking the other way fee.

And if you ever take from those who aren't well off and can't afford to lose anything I will find out and I will be extremely annoyed with you two. Got it?"

This gets the guild more money and makes them work on improving their skills while keeping them from being too malevolent.

"Really?! Like what?"

"Well, for one, there's this tunnel..."

--------------------------------------------------

After explaining about the tunnel and the untold riches it might lead to (what? It could!), the twins were positively bubbling over with enthusiasm.

"Let's go, Nii-chan, let's go! Which way is it to the tunnel?"

"Woah, woah, hold up -- we'll need to check in with Kotori before we head out. And we'll probably need another person or two. For now let's go back to the guildhall, ok?"

You make your way back to the guildhall and talk to Kotori.

"Oh, you brought Ami and Mami back! Where were they?"

"Just off playing in the streets. I made the mistake of mentioning that tunnel we found yesterday, and now they won't stop bugging me about exploring it."

"Did you ask at the duke's palace this morning about payment?"

"Yeah, they said they'd send you the paperwork to get payment through some public safety fund or whatever. Think we're clear to go?"

"Well...I guess so, but it could be a pretty long expedition. You'd probably want to stock up on food and supplies first. I don't know how much money you have, but I know our girls probably wouldn't be able to afford what they'd need. You might want to do something smaller first and use your payment from that to prepare. We still have that request from old wizard Findlay, and he tends to pay pretty generously."

Realistically speaking, given a medieval-esque setting, there really wouldn't be all that much out of place with a younger 20-something guy courting any of the iM@S cast.

But practically speaking, the people playing this quest are from modern societies where such a thing would be very much out of place, and I don't want this to turn into pedo quest.

TL;DR -- technically no, effectively yes. As a meta consideration to avoid things getting creepy, the younger girls are all imouto-zoned.

LESS LEWD TALKING MORE ADVENTURE
>>
>>22064974
Maybe my understanding of history is just flawed, but I was under the impression that girls would be put up for marriage basically as soon as puberty hit, but it would not be uncommon for guys to stay bachelors until their early 20s. Maybe 20-year-olds wooing 13-year-olds wouldn't have been the most common scenario, but I don't believe it was particularly frowned upon.

For instance, IIRC, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was only 14 or so, whereas Romeo was in his 20s. And the forbidden part of their romance was all about the feuding families, not the age gap.

Kotori makes a good point about the benefits of a little extra preparation. And by the sound of it, this Findlay guy's request sounds like it'd be pretty easy money.

"You say you've gotten petitions from this guy before, right? How long do they usually take? It is getting pretty late in the afternoon."

Oh, and adventure, obviously.

>Maybe my understanding of history is just flawed, but I was under the impression that girls would be put up for marriage basically as soon as puberty hit
This did indeed happen, but was often driven by dynastic concerns, such as sealing a peace pact or securing the allegiance of one's nobles. Laws varied from place to place, some allowing a marriage to be arranged as young as 7. However, where such marriages were arranged they were not consummated until much later. Maybe about 16. Among the lower classes it was roughly similar, with menarche signaling the -viability- of marriage, but not necessarily the -necessity-. Region to region was different, seeming to fall within age 16 to 18.

I guess the important point here, and one I should have made from the start, is that the barrier was much more fluid that it is today and often there was a substantial gap between the betrothal or ceremony and consummation.

>Adwenture's not waiting

And Miki, too see if she's really that good as they say.
>>
>>22065220
So in short, we cannot fuck the twins. Or anyone else for that matter. Because this isn't that kind of story.

>Adventure waits for no man! We go today!
As for party members, I would love to take Takane, though it might be a bit of a risk considering she's a mystery, but she is a mage so she should be able to help if the wizards quest is magic related and its probably safer to test her in a minor quest prior to anything major.
So lets go with Takane
>>
>>22065203
She might be better for the tunnel thing later on.

"Hahaha, it'll take more than a mugging and a little smoke to wear me out. I think I can manage one more quick errand before I call it a day."

You decide to bring Takane along for this one. Since it's a wizard you'll be dealing with, you figure it'll be useful to have someone who's familiar with magic along (even if her particular brand of magic is a bit of an enigma), and you'd like to try to get a feel for her capabilities. After getting directions from Kotori, you set off for the old wizard's manor.

It's a fairly large house in a nicer section of town, but not obscenely extravagant. You walk up to the front door and pound on the large brass knocker. After a few moments, the knocker and the wood around it begin to twist and distort. The knocker melts into the wood and is replaced by a large mouth and a bulging cyclopean eye, about as big across as two hands' widths.

The eye swivels to look at you, and the mouth speaks. "Whozzat? Whatever you're selling I'm not interested, thank you very much. Unless it's peppermint sticks -- are you selling peppermint sticks?"

"Um, no, we're not selling peppermint sticks, we're --"

"Sorry, not interested then." The eye closes and begins to reced into the door.

"Wait! We're from 765Pro, we're here because you petitioned us for a quest!"

The eye reopens. "Well then, why didn't you say so? Come in, come in." You hear a click as the bolt slides open and the door swings inward...

Next time on iM@S Fantasy Quest: Old Man Findlay's Missing Item, and probably some other stuff.

Unfortunately, the next installment will most likely not be until after Christmas. I'll be going home to my parents' house soon for the holidays, and for some reason the internet connection there does not like 4chan. Not sure exactly why, but it just does not work, even though other sites work just fine.

As usual, I'll hang around for a bit for questions and constructive criticism and such. I also have the writeup about setting details (magic and whatnot) just about finished, I'm going to put the final touches on here and get it uploaded soon for everyone to look at.
>>
>>22065433
Looks like bringing Takane along was a good idea. That's pretty senile.

Of course, Azusa probably could've worked in this as well.

Maybe it's their IP. You could try fiddling with it.

Agreed. I'd like to see a balance of idols being represented, as long as they can both pretty suitably do the job.

I hope not. That's like 3 of my favorite idols that are left out.

>>
>>22065561
I saw some posts on /a/ showing different drawings of idols that I believe is from the same drawfag. I don't know if he's taking a break, stopped entirely or what. He hasn't posted saying anything about it.

I think it might actually be something to do with a content filter they had on at one point earlier this year because they caught my little brother looking at sketchy websites. I never had any trouble accessing 4chan at home before that, then one time I came home for the weekend and ran up on a blocked website page. The last couple times I went home to visit, I was able to get to 4chan, so I assume they turned off the content filter but the pages wouldn't load properly -- I could see the text of the posts, but none of the images showed up and the formatting was all wonky.

My dad works in IT, so I'm sure he could fix it if I asked, but both my parents are pretty strict moralfags so I'm kind of hesitant to ask about fixing access to a site with 4chan's reputation, even if I am using it for legitimately clean purposes.
>>
>>22065594

Just use the good old 'academic research' excuse. Never ever failed me in life.
>>
>>22065625
Perhaps if I were still an undergrad...
But now as a grad student, my work is a lot more focused, and given the field I'm in, I'd be hard pressed to pass off 4chan as being remotely relevant.
>>
>>22065594
It might be just as well. There's the Xeno stream 21 & 22nd, Yukiho's bday 24th and the SP routes release. So may not be the best time for a quest with so many distractions besides whatever RL stuff they have.
>>
>>22065594
You could probably ask /g/ to help you set up an SSH tunnel through your machine.
>>
>>22065649
You could keep it vague and say that you're having problems visiting sites and getting things to load properly. They may have a security login set-up for adult access that you could use.

I love side material so I'm game. Thanks for doing this and good luck with your holiday plans.
>>

Thanks, I can see you put a lot of work into this.
