You are Blake Ericksen, a mid-level computer programmer at WonderChem(TM), a pharmaceutical corporation based in a small suburban town in south Washington, near the Oregon border, called Goldendale.

Today is the 29th of March, and you will receive your monthly pay on the 29th of each month. Your bills will be automatically deducted from your funds on the 1st of each new month..

You are laying, bound by chains on the ground and being interrogated by two women and a man who seem to be working with the hammer-wielding man who knocked you out of your rampage. They asked if we consented of the actions we committed under our "Pantheon's Burden", or whatever that is, when we killed the woman. Naturally, we choose to lie.

"No, I had no idea what was going on." You say smoothly and shake your head, "One moment I was scared by someone getting close and the next is just a blur of red." The younger woman nods supportively, "See? He's just a victim of his Burden, as we all were at one point." She says and looks up at the man, "If you won't release him, what should we do with him?" The man strokes his white beard and sighs, "I can't really say. My other half wants to do something horrible to him for the crimes he committed, but I don't think that is the solution to our problems. How did you get here?"

>Be honest.
>Lie again
>Ask question and deflect

>be honest
Now that we lied, cover it with truth.
>>

"I came here with a friend." You say truthfully and the man nods, accepting it as he accepted all that you've said, it seems. The women are quiet for a second before the older woman, who you guess is now the brains of this operation, speaks again, "We've been watching you ever since you came here. We wanted to bring you into our group. We can arm you with knowledge, give you control over that thing inside of you, and give you a chance to become more than you had ever dreamed of becoming in the past." She says and calls out for the man with the hammer who approaches. "This is Roger, and a few months ago he was a paraplegic. We discovered that he had a Shard inside of him and worked to nurture and control it together. Now he is the pride of our organization." She explains as the man snarls down at you and his hand rests on the handle of his hammer, almost as if he were looking for a reason to smash your fragile human head to a red paste.

The young woman smiles at you and sits you up, "We can teach you about everything we know and, eventually, maybe you can help us back as well." She says and the white-bearded man nods, "So, what do you say? You won't ever have to worry about having your body twisted and contorted away from your control again. We can give you safety."

>Accept
>Accept, but ask about Sam joining.
>Refuse

We can learn a bit about what we are from them and figure our next move.
>>
>>27628738
I don't want to join them but fear that if we refuse they will kill us because we are dangerous. They'll probably cut off or minimize our connection with Tezcatlipocta, though I suspect it's nothing permanent.

Accept. We'll get some training from them and get some more power. Later we can just leave or betray them.
>>
And let's play the naive, confused fool throughout all of this.

"Very well. I'm in." You say and the younger woman places her hand on yours and releases it, a small mark that looks like a hieroglyph appearing on your flesh and vanishing. "Welcome to the group then." The white-bearded man says as he extends his hand and the chains turn to dust, falling to the ground around you. You take to your feet shakily as you feel the sores and aches your body must have felt from the hammer's blow. The white-bearded man indicates himself first, "I am Larry, you know Roger, the young woman beside you is Karen, and this is Rachel, my wife." Larry puts his hands in his pockets and smiles, "What's your name?" You tell them and Larry shakes your hand. "Come on, we have to get moving, we've spent too long here." The five of you get into the van and you are left to sit in the back with Karen and, to your displeasure, Roger. The large man spends the entire ride staring at you, his large red beard bristling in rage as you see stray tendrils of lightning arcing from his eyes and racing around him. Karen raises her hands, "Roger, please, calm down. It's fine, we're friends now, right? Remember, we all had issues when we first awakened our Shards." The larger man just grunts once.

"Karen...about this on my hand?" You ask, holding up the hand where the hieroglyph was placed. She smiles, "That's there so that we can find you in case you go on a rampage, or someone captures you. We have to be sure to take care of our members." She says and Roger nods, "It will let Karen and anyone who knows the Mysteries find you, with the right spell." Roger explains, apparently coming out of his angry shell for a little.

>Press Karen further.

>>

We'll have to think of ways to remove it. Let's not press, though. Don't want to be suspicious.
Act relieved.
>>Another question.
Ask about the 'Mysteries'. What are they?
"Mysteries?"
>>
>>27629609
>>27629583

"The Mysteries?" She asks and then smiles, "Oh, they the magic of Egyptian Shards. I was taught them and am now the greatest user of them we have discovered." She says a bit pridefully. "Each Pantheon has their own complicated and diverse magic, history, and abilities. Don't worry, we can teach you more about this when we get to our base." She explains and Roger nods, "So if you are thinking about getting rid of it, think again. You'll need some powerful magic to do it." He says with another grunt.

Silence reigns in the van before finally it stops and you are all let out. A small run-down house waits next to you and the five of you enter. Karen raises her hands and begins chanting in a language you haven't heard once you're inside. The door shuts and symbols appear around it and the dusty dingy room vanishes away to reveal a comfortable living room, fully modern and kept up. Larry sits down and Rachel goes to the kitchen with Roger. Karen drags her feet over to the couch and sits down. "Now, Blake, is there anything pressing on your mind? Or would you rather I began my lecture?" Larry says as he crosses a leg and looks at you imperiously.

"The thing you possess inside of you is called a Shard. These Shards are pieces of gods, long-since dead to the world, which have become embedded in humans and passed down generations. It is not a physical thing, but something that is attached to your spirit or something close to that." Larry says as he waves his hand, "Regardless, the facts we know are the important ones, so listen up. The Shard inside of you is that of the Aztec god Texcalipocta. These Shards are not sources of power, but you can think of them as resonators for power fed to them. They feed on a resource we call "Divinity", or divine energy. This Divinity can be found in nature, it can be created inside of you through purposeful action, and it can be absorbed through Deicide. Absorb too much, too quickly, and you risk becoming a Godhead. Draw upon your Shard too much and you risk a Break." He says and pauses to thank his wife for a drink as she and Roger join you.

"This is very important because it's the only things we've found that appears to be universal between all of the Inheritors we've met. That and the general progression of abilities and affects the Shard has upon you." He says as he grabs a mirror from the table, "In fact, I'm willing to guess you aren't latin." As you look into the mirror you see that your Caucasian features have vanished, replaced with tanned skin and green animal-like eyes.

>>
>>27629905

"This is the very first effect a Shard has upon its host, which we call Attunement. The Shard is modeling you to become more like the being it used to be. This always seems to convey a heightened strength, stamina, and a deep change in your characteristics. We assign divinity on a scale of one to ten, and this starts around 2 or 3. From how far along you are, however, I wouldn't be surprised to find that you are at five or higher. At 10 a person becomes a Godhead, which is a disaster." He explains and gestures towards Roger, "Roger here is basically the spitting image of Thor. He's at 7 or 8, I believe." Roger snarls, "Hey, come on Larry, it's a personal thing." The older man waves his hands at Roger's complaints, "We're all in this together, but I understand." He clears his throat and continues.

"You can control exactly how much or how little Divinity you take in, and you can walk the line as we all do." Larry explains and then pauses, "Any questions so far?"

>"No, continue."
>"Yeah..." (write in)

>"No, continue."

"Alright, well I suppose you may be asking the point of this group. We have a few purposes. Our first and foremost is to find Inheritors and bring them into our ranks and give them support and guidance." He explains, "Usually, however, we hope to do so peacefully. We seem to have caught you in a bad moment." The man says with a sad smile. "The second goal is destroy Anomalies; creations from lingering Divinity that congeal and form actual monsters from various mythologies. These monsters are extremely hard to kill and basically require Divinity to defeat in any reasonable time. The last reason, and perhaps the most important, is to defend against another Avatar." The other three members of the room become uncomfortable at this, but Larry presses on. "There was a time, not too long ago where a few Inheritors had been building up and fought one another for power or something in north Washington. Their fight escalated, and the Inheritors became so proficient, they became Avatars, or Perfect Inheritors. The exact information is unclear, but what happened was clear. Their battle reached such a climax that the mountain erupted. We know one of the Avatars died in the conflict and the other appears to have vanished, but judging from the lingering Divinity, he must have Broken." He pauses and gathers his thoughts. "That's our goals. So, what do you want to do first?"

Afterward,

Well, what I actually want to do is hunt Anomalies but it might be best we not cultivate a reputation of bloodthirstiness.

I agree with this. Go for it.
>>
>>27630286
True, and we can blame our prior actions on Tezcatlipocta. We just shouldn't let these people consider us bloodthirsty. It will make us more trustworthy.
Let's keep the hieroglyph in mind as we move forward.

"I think I want to study more about my Shard." You say and Larry nods, "That's fine, go ahead and take an open room, we have about fifty, and just let us know when you're ready." You thank him and leave, strolling down the hall and finding a room all alone and away from everyone else. Once inside you sit down and close your eyes. You hear and feel nothing, then sleep over takes us.

You awaken, not in the jungle, but this time at the base of the obsidian spire. Sitting in the throne is the large jaguar who speaks in the voice you know as Tezcalipocta's. "Welcome, Blake." The large jaguar speaks, "You seek an audience?" You nod and speak back, "I want to know more about you and what you demand and give." The jaguar laughs, a strange sound from an animal, but then he nods, "Certainly, allow me to show you." And then it pounces before you can act.

Scenes of carnage, blood in the jungles as men who wear our sacred animal's skin to revere our strength kill those less blessed than we. They bring those who surrender home and kill them, gruesomely for us our and siblings. Their blood enriches us and makes our heart race, it fills us with power. Death and blood at our hand fills us with power.

The vision ends as the jaguar gazes down at you. "Surely you see I am not a difficult god to please. Give me blood and death, and I will give you strength enough to succeed at any task. Simply allow me in, and we can conquer."

>Allow him.
>Maintain control.
>>
>>27630391
Maintain control for now. We need to establish dominance and we also need to convince these people we have things under control.
>>
We need to maintain control
>>

While I'm all for some killing while we have that hieroglyph we should exercise restraint. Bide our time and strike when the time is right.
>>
>>27630391
>>Maintain control.
Maintain control for now. It would be dangerous for us to act like bloodthirsty monsters right now.

Anyway, if we are to prove ourselves worthy of being the new Tezcatlipocta, we have to maintain control.

"The time isn't right yet, we have to use these people and their knowledge as best we can before we conquer." You say and the jaguar flicks its tail in frustration before admitting, "Very well, what you say is sound. However, by contacting me I will be in your mind and able to speak to you so long as you keep me fed." It says and soon the vision ends.

When you open your eyes you see the sunrise. Apparently that vision took a great deal of time, though it felt like mere minutes. You stretch and walk out towards the common living area. Roger is making eggs. His heavy hammer rests on the counter as he whistles, cooking eggs with his back turned to you. You sniff the air, it appears he's alone.

>"Good morning, Roger!"
>Ignore and leave
>"Good morning, Roger!" then stab him. (+1 Divinity and -1 ???)

I'd generally like to keep control of self. Revel in the hunt but not let ourselves be under total control. Better to be perfect inheritor than godhead.

>"Good morning, Roger!"
Still not insane enough to backstab. Better to control than be controlled.
>>
>>27630541
>"Good morning, Roger!" then stab him. (+1 Divinity and -1 ???)
I want to do this so much, just for the unpredictableness of it.

>"Good morning, Roger!"
We need to put up a happy and innocent front! Be horrified and depressed by the fact that we killed someone earlier.
>>
>>27630541
'Then stab him' made me laugh.

>"Good morning, Roger!"
Must keep up the act. We were in a frenzy. No enmity for him.
>>
>>27630541
"Good morning, Roger! Smells delicious. So, did Loki steal Sif's hairs recently?"

Lets not stab him. I am sure we'll have better and safer opportunities for divinity.

"Good morning, Roger!" You say cheerily and he turns to face you, hammer already in his hand, but when he sees how calm and happy you are he puts it down and nods, "Morning." He rumbles out through his beard. "Making eggs, want some?" He offers to which you politely agree.

After eating some very well made eggs, sitting opposite the nearly eight foot-tall monster that is this walking incarnation of Thor he leans back, happy with eating, and says, "So...Blake, tell me, do you like fighting as much as I do? Because if there's something we love it is a good fight or a good challenge." He says and leans forward, the table creaking out loudly in protest from the sheer weight of his arm, "How about some morning workouts? Something to get the blood and Divinity flowing." The man says with a grin that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Let's have a friendly match in the dojo." He says, pointing towards the other wing of the house.

The voice in your head rumbles, "A wise choice, his intent was to kill us, I believe. I can taste the murder in his voice. He does not forgive us our prey." You make a note of the chip on Roger's shoulder and decide to go clean yourself up.

You shower and dress in the same clothes again. You sniff the air and can sense that Roger and now Larry as well as Rachel are here. As well as a new scent. Someone you haven't met before is in the house now.

You decide to continue to groom your nice-guy image. "I can smell fresh meat!" You say in a sing-song voice as you appear, bursting through the door to the common room with a theatrical slide. Everyone fixes you with a strange look, except for Larry who bursts into a fit of giggles, which he quickly tries to disguise as coughs. "Blake, I'd like you to welcome our newest member as of this morning. This is Mary-Louise." The young woman sitting on the couch looks anything but what a Mary-Louse should look like in your mind.

She has thin rippling muscles, dark skin, hands that end in long dagger-like claws. Her face is strange, beautiful but she possesses a flat nose and long whiskers. You can see her eyes, which are currently sobbing, have cat-like slits and are dark blue. Her ears are tipped and sharp.

"We managed to rescue her in the middle of her rampage...but it wasn't without a price." Larry says as his wife pats the young woman's shoulders, he walks up to you and whispers, "She killed her family and her boyfriend. There's really no going back for her. Since you're new as well, maybe you two kids can be friends?" He suggests.

>"Sure Larry, whatever I can do to help."

He claps your shoulders, "Excellent! Come come, say hello then." He says and walks you forward before giving you space. Certainly not unused to being kind you smile at Mary-Louise and sit in front of her. "Hello, I'm Blake." You say and she sobs and waves at you before choking back more tears and then struggling out, "...nice to meet you."

Rachel stands up to get her some fresh whatever from the kitchen and, as she passes you, nudges her head towards her old seat, indicating you should go there. Quick to pick her signal up you sit next to the young woman and start reassuring her, telling her how nice these people are, and how you had a terrible time as well when you went on your rampage, but that she can move past and it never let it happen again.

In a few minutes she's crying on your shoulder and nodding, "Yes....I never want to let it happen again." She says and looks up, "Just...look at me, I'm hideous! My face...is all cat-like!" She says and looks at you again, "But..." she pauses, "We have the same eyes. Are you like me?" She asks but before you can answer Larry cuts in, "No, actually, he can't be. Only Goddesses inhabit women and Gods inhabit men. We've never found a contrary to this rule. But he is somewhat feline, isn't he?" Larry says and chuckles.

If appearance is dictated by divinity, that girl could be pretty far along on the path to godhood.

She's Godheaded, like we were when we were trying to murder the fuck out of Roger earlier.

So just caught up in this and considering our eventually murder everyone plan we should consider researching the hieroglyphs, see if there's an easy way to mask it temporarily or remove it entirely (maybe even chop off our hand if its tied to the location of the hieroglyph).
>>
>>27631338
She's far along because she murdered her family and boyfriend. I'm willing to bet the more we act 'out of character', the more Divinity we gain.

Cutting off our hand and drinking the blood would give us Divinity as well. And we can heal from blood. This is actually a solid plan...

For later, though. Now's not the time to swing into murderhobo action - we need to plot and prepare first.
>>
>>27631396
cant tell if serious or not...

>>27631400

"Tell you what, how about we go out and get used to our new selves a little?" You suggest and Rachel starts to say something before Larry hushes her, "I think that's a great idea, Blake." He says and while his wife gives a stern look of disapproval she manages to agree on one condition, "You two can go out at night. And only when Karen is here to make sure the both of you are safe. She's out right now trying to scout." You agree, of course, and the young girl manages to calm down.

The five, including Roger, of you sit down to a strange dinner later that day just as Karen comes in and flops into her chair. She eats very lightly, only dates and bread. You are very eager to get into action and stand up, Mary-Louise curious and happy to be accept, joining you. Rachel still expresses her disapproval but Larry pats you on the back, "Good job making her feel welcome. Have fun kids."

And with that the two of you take off, starting on a stroll. The moon radiates down on you and you can hear in your mind the sound of Tezcalipocta sighing, in joy. "Ah, the old hunter's moon makes me remember the days where I would cull the strongest from a tribe and watch them panic before I devoured their village. Those were the days..." He says as you hear the girl speak.

"So...you're a jaguar?" She asks awkwardly, "You look pretty human to me. I look...like a freak." She says and grips her head, "And I keep hearing voices."

You start to speak but the voice in your head cuts in, "If you want to become a jaguar, in truth, we can make it happen. We can allow it to be your first use of my divine power. If you want to look into the real eyes of a god, accept my offer. We can do this and incite her to do it as well, and we can rule the night!!" He says triumphantly and then calms down, "Or...whatever you wish, Master Blake." The voice says deeply in a purr.

You agree in your mind and feel the moon's power sinking into your skin. Mary-Louise looks at you in awe and freezes up, listening to the voice in her head as well. You feel your spine twist and turn and in a matter of moments you stand before her, not as the jaguar-man from before, but as an actual jaguar. A very large one to be sure, but a real one. She looks at you in awe and when she touches you she lets out a cry of pain as she undergoes a similar change and becomes a large lioness. The two of you are roughly the same size and without words take off bounding down the streets.

However, you struggle and strain and manage to steer, feeling the heavy, almost mountainous influence of Tezcalipocta, pushing against your mind. Your struggle is successful as he backs off you and are in command. "Mary-Louise?" You ask her in a strange voice, the tigress faces you and pauses, reaching out to lick your nose, "No, she's in there, but resting. I am in command now. You may refer to me as Goddess, your Greatness, or, if you are worthy, Sekhmet." She says in a fierce growl. She stalks around you like a beast stalking a kill. "And are you, strange speckled lion, a being I should be familiar with? Are you the Blake she whimpers for, or are you his better half?"

(Assert you dominance wins)

"I am Blake." You growl at her and she languorously lays on her back and stretches out entirely, "Well well, isn't that interesting." She says and walks close to you, snarling,
and trying to scare you. You force yourself to stand up and even hiss back at her, raising your hackles. She laughs and unsheathes her claws, "Let's see if you're just talk, or if you can back it up."

Fighting her would be difficult. You aren't used to your jaguar body, and can hardly move well in it, and she's undoubtedly familiar with hers. "Let me take command. I can show this fat cat who is the real King of the Jungle." Tezcalipocta offers again. It's a tempting offer. She's far bigger, certainly you're both of similar length, but she's massive with huge muscles around her neck and front limbs. If she bites you she can probably rip your head clean off.

You reach into your mind, "I need help." You say simply and you can feel him grinning. "Glad to be of service." As you feel his mind pushing you aside, allowing no room for compromise, you hear him whispering in low deep tones as he circles around her, Sekhmet doing the same, both of your eyes locked as she snarls. We, however, remain calm as we chant. The spell finishes as the moon's light becomes absorbed into our hide and we square our shoulders, ready to fight. She takes this a sign of readiness and pounces at us.

We stand up and lunge back at her, wrapping around front legs around her midsection and push through her, jaws wide open as she bites at our mouth. We land atop her and a vicious struggle begins, claws and fangs clashing as we bite and claw savagely, using our smaller size to nimbly evade her clumsiness. Eventually she finds an opening and bites our neck, but a ring of silver appears around us and shatters as she wrenches at it, a blow that would have killed us. Instead, we scramble onto her back and dig our claws into her shoulders and bite her neck hard.

"She's mine. I'll have her blood!" Tezcalipocta roars in triumph as you feel our jaws tightening and our fangs easily breaking the skin. If we continue she'll be dead.

(More than enough)

With all the strength of your will you shove Tezcalipocta back in his corner, to which he roars thunderously, enough to give you a migrane, as you clamber off his back. Sekhmet snarls, but sits down on her hindquarters and sheathes her claws. "Very well...mortal Blake. You have earned my respect. You may have a single favor." She says imperiously, though you can see the blood dripping from her neck onto the street.

As this conversation continues, however, you can smell someone nearby, a teenage human female carrying a large amount of stink behind her, she must be taking out the garbage. Your jaguar mind wishes to kill and eat her, but having asserted your dominance it's easy to rein that urge in for now. She looks into your eyes suddenly, "Tell me, then, tonight shall I play the faithful servant, oh mighty Jaguar-King?"

We need to again the trust of these people. Reining in Mary-Louise would be a perfect way to do that.

Also we could continue hunting with Mary-Louise in the lion form. See if we can find some tasty blood.
>>
>>27632377

"It doesn't affect me either way. Do whatever you like." You say a bit standoffishly. She laughs and walks alongside you, running her body against yours and flicking your face with
her tail. "How quaint, just like a real jungle cat. Very well, your good graces have impressed me enough to give you a free gift. I will allow you to have the girl back. Until next time, mortal Blake." She says and her eyes go blank before Mary's voice emerges, "Blake...what happened? Are you ok?" She asks, worriedly before growling in pain and becoming human again, wearing strange white linen garments with golden bracers around her wrists and ankles. Around her neck is a pendant with a lion's head. And, most noticeably, her human head is gone now, entirely replaced with that of a lioness. She doesn't seem to notice, however, as she kneels in front of you. "Are you ok?" She repeats. You are about to tell her yes when you hear a scream behind you.

The girl with the trashcan, now knocked over, yells loudly, but not from panic, she yells loudly and piercingly, enough to alert the whole neighborhood it seems. You turn to face her to see her sweatpants and tanktop fall to the ground as she becomes pale and ethereal, her hair flailing out wildly behind her as she screams in both pain and rage. The waves of sound reach you and, to your horror, flesh begins to rip off as well as fur at the sound.

Mary turns and runs, faster than any human could possibly run, back to the safe house. You, instinctively, turn and run, jumping up into a tree. The ghostly girl, however, floats forward as black liquid pours from her eyes as the sound waves appear as visible distortions in the air. The leaves are blasted from the tree and the limbs are becoming scraps of sawdust that fly up into your feline face. This isn't a good place to be.

"Release the spell!" Tezcalipocta orders you and while you panic for a moment you focus on being a man again and stand in the tree wearing a jaguar skin on your back and rough leather clothes. The limb you are holding onto to support yourself now becomes a heavy wooden...thing? A club? This strange weapon, with black protrusions you haven't seen before around its head and down most of its length, feels unusually comfortable in your hand.

"Kill the witch! Give her blood to me!" Tezcalipocta orders loudly. You can smell humans running, from out of their houses to see, as well as from the safe house. Rachel is coming, very very quickly.

The jaguar skin seems to wrap tighter around you, shrouding you, as you swing the massive club down on her head. The weapon cleaves straight through her ghostly form without a problem. You feel your body jolt slightly from the Divinity that surges through the club as her pieces fall to the ground without a sound. All that's left after she vanishes is a small twisting pile of golden strands.

"Do not touch that! It is raw Divinity!" Rachel calls out, running towards you very quickly. "Do it, feed me more power. My zenith is nigh!" Tezcalipocta urges you further as the Divinity in front of you seems to glow warm and golden, calling for you. The club, dripping in black blood, shimmers as if illusory, and then becomes a simple length of wood again.

You reach out and grab the Divinity, disregarding Rachel's warnings as she rushes close to you.

Tezcalipocta grabs her by the throat, his skin black and obsidian with a band of turquoise skin around his eyes. She tries to struggle, a bow of silver light in her hand, as she tries to pull it. She says something, but her language is strange. He crushes her throat, just enough to make her unable to move, as he smashes her arm with his foot. Extending a hand up an obsidian dagger appears in his hand and thrusts into her chest, gouging her chest open and removing her heart. He tosses it up into the air and his head becomes a jaguar, devouring it whole. Delicious.

There are people yelling all around, music to his ears. Waving a hand Tezcalipocta calls hooks of silver to lunge down and hang these people by their spines in the air. Now he can have them as he pleases. You are helpless to resist him. The rest you see is a storm of red. Blood and death.

Your next view is of the suburban little neighborhood, still and quiet. Bodies upon bodies upon bodies pile around the bottom of the pillar Tezcalipocta sits on. He watches in pleasure at the carnage. He bites another heart.

Blake Ericksen is unable to resist the influx of Divinity and becomes a Godhead. Blake is dead.

However, all is not lost.
