This game will use D20 for combat and a consensus system to decide actions.

Urrrgh, your head hurts like hell. Must have been one hell of a night, though you don’t taste alcohol on your breath as you haul yourself onto your feet. In fact, you remember nothing of the night before. If your surroundings are anything to go by, it wasn’t a party. Your apartment looks like it was hit by a bomb and then raided by looters. The floor is scorched and still smouldering in places, while the contents of every single container have been scattered across the wreckage. After a cursory search it’s clear that there’s no money in the house but whoever it was missed the safe box. You’re not paranoid, but the city is unstable enough that a little protection is what any sensible person has.

Yeah, maybe it’s not that surprising those looters struck your house. Olympus heights is a pretty classy district and your house would attract exactly the wrong sort of attention for the time. Damn it, you can’t just let these people take your stuff. You walk across the room to the safe box and pop the lock with the code. Inside there’s a phial of coloured liquid and a gun, as well as some ammo. Perfect. Next to it is you ID card, with a rather flattering picture. The name on the card reads -

>Name, occupation and gender

You pick up the phial and read the label. It says -

>Don't wait, Incinerate!
>Electro Bolt! A zap a day keeps the doctor away!
>Telekinesis! Look down on matter!

Before finally looking at the gun, your trusty -

>Hand canon, a beautifully ornate revolver with six shots, each that could punch through a wall
>Bang stick, a chunky sawn off shotgun, modified to load four cartridges at a time
>Shoota, a Tommy gun specifically modified to cause its bullets to shatter on impact, whether inside the target or not.

Choices are marked with

For those of you new to quests. Vote for what you want.

Well, that's boring. Now we can't explore Rapture science with a knowledgeable eye, nor get a closer examination of how former-communists fit in to this great society. Oh well, I'm sure we can make something fun of this.
>>
>>29389735
Now who says a PI can't know a little about politics?
>>
>>29389762
It won't be as evident as it would be for a scientist with a Russian name. Instead, we're a private investigator with and Anglo name, which means we'll get a slice very similar to the slice we got in the original Bioshock and the Burial at Sea DLC of Bioshock Infinite. Which, I mean, those were great, don't get me wrong.

I was just hoping for a new point of view. A properly different one. A former-communist scientist would certainly be that.

Oh well. C'est la vie. We'll just have to try to make do with what we've got.
>>
>>29389806
Problem is, the characters were picked like that because they would be relatable to the player. A different point of view would require actually acquiring a different point of view, and not just playing Jack but with a russian skin.
>>
Is it wrong that I see the Bioshock games as being roughly analysis to a more narrative version of a Space Station 13 round mid- or post-collapse?
>>
>>29389806
We can mix up the recipe.
>>
>>29389862
It was Booker in Burial at Sea, but I understand your point. I don't know, I guess I just saw a tabletop version as being much more accessible as far as investigating alternative points of view are concerned. There's less of a need to specifically appeal to a purchasing demographic, and a lot more options for more detailed characterization.

But, like I said, what's done is done. We'll just have to make the best of what we picked.
>>
If it makes a difference I vote the scientist.
>>
>>29389901
Nah, it's already been decided. We're Jim Clark, Private Eye. Can't get much more WASP than that.

Still, I'm sure there's something we can do with it. Former felon who fled to Rapture to be free from any chance at extradition? The veteran angle's already been played up by Booker in Infinite, so that's a no-go if we want some novelty.

Thoughts?
>>
>>29389917
Former (heh) spook?
>>
>>29389917
I like it.
>>
>>29389949
That could definitely be an interesting option. We were a CIA plant here in Rapture to monitor the situation. Cover ID as a PI. Dual complimentary skill sets. Interesting perspective.

Yeah, I think that might even be more interesting than being a dude fleeing extradition.
>>
>>29389949
Always thought it'd be fun to play one since Andrew Ryan grilled Jack about being KGB or CIA. Would need a good plot for that though. Felon seems fine. Maybe organized crime? Just a guy tryin' to make a profit? I don't know. Let's just see how it goes.
>>
>>29389917
>>29389949
>>29389967
>>29389968
>>29389973
I'm fine with either option. Maybe play it ambiguous - some people are suspicious, but aren't sure what our outsider angle is. Mafia? CIA? KGB? All they know is that the pieces don't all fit quite right, and we're concealing some kind of agenda.

And that's only those who are in-the-know enough to see that something's off.

Slipping the card into your pocket, you load the canon. You make yourself busy tidying the room and putting on your coat for a few minutes, putting of the moment like a good cigar. When you came here, you were suitably distrustful of all these magic plasmids and strange weapons. When you bought this one a few weeks ago, you reassured yourself it was just a precaution, not because you wanted it. Secretly, you had wanted nothing more than to plunge the needle into your arm for the last month, and taste the power that the rest of Rapture was getting a slice of. Now you had a reason, it was finally time.

With slow, reverent steps, you cross the room and take it up again. The directions are simple; stab it into your left arm and push down the plunger. No need to find the vein or mess around, just stick it in. One slow deep breath to calm your nerves and then you do it, bring your right arm and the plasmid down with a fleshy crunch. The plunger gives beneath your thumb and the blue liquid enters your body and for a moment you’re sure it hasn’t worked. Then it hits. The fire of creation sears through you arm, chest limbs and finally into your head, every piece of your existence being rewritten and warped. You fall to the floor as spasms overtake your body and screams are torn from your throat. Convulsing and shrieking on the floor in a ruined apartment, you must look a strange sight.

Then it ceases, as suddenly as it came and leaving an absence as gapping and obvious as the pain. Man, what a rush. Those splicers know where it’s at. Looking down at your hand, you see the blue, glowing veins sticking out and the crackle of the air. Nice, let’s find some thieves to test it on.

Striding out of the apartment, you take stock of the area. The trail of the looters is easy to follow, leading off to the left and marked by a ruined area. But as you step that way, you hear a scream coming from the other direction. Damn, there’s always something.

Slipping a hand inside your overcoat to fondle the handle of the canon, you casually stroll towards the source of the noise. The corner of gleaming, golden corridor is only marred by the fallen trash can and smoking heap of rubbish. You carefully step through it, making sure not get any of the filth on your shiny new shoes. Even in Rapture, fine leather shoes are not a dime a dozen. Some paradise.

You peer around the corner and see the man who was screaming. Perhaps you should have recognised the screams, as they mirrored the ones you made a few moments ago almost exactly. The man’s left arm is bulging with red veins and clouds of smoke issue from huge cracks that have split his skin into pieces. As you watch, his eyes close and he goes rigid for a couple of seconds before slackening. He’s sprawled in front of one of those Gatherer’s Gardens, weird vending machines that sell plasmids and such. Too bad Adam is their currency.

Something sticking out of the man’s pocket catches your eye. It’s a blue syringe, with the word ‘EVE’ printed on it. Right, you know what that is. It’s the miracle juice that powers your crazy new arm. It feels full of juice right now, but it’ll need more eventually. This guy might object though... and even as the thought crosses your mind, he sits up and groans. Huh, there goes an easy score.

>Leave the guy and follow the trail?

If he's a plasmid junkie, you can forget about any meaningful dialogue.

However, if we're on the middle of the civil war that took down Rapture, he may as well infused with those hypnotic plasmid Ryan was selling, so yeah...

"Would you kindly give me that EVE?"
>>
>>29390367
>hypnotic plasmid Ryan was selling
That's not quite where 'Would you kindly' comes in.
>>
>>29390367
We don't know shit about any of that, and assuming he's a plasmid junkie just because he's had one plasmid is massively hypocritical. We're not robbing this chap just because he might hypothetically be a junkie.

“You all right, friend?” you say, letting your hand inch a little away from your weapon. No need to threaten him, yet. The man twists around in shock and stares at you in surprise. Now you have a chance to look at him, you see he doesn’t look like the average splicer. For one thing, he’s wearing a cardigan and reading glasses. For another, he’s quivering in fear at the very sight of you.
“Uuhmm... I mean to say, yes, quite alright, yes. Thank you for asking” he trails off, his high pitched English accent settling into silence. This guy’s clearly no threat and might be in more danger of hurting himself than you. You walk over and offer him a hand, to which he responds with pathetic gratitude. After he’s been helped up, he looks like he’s about to say something when his eyes go wide and he squeals. Without waiting to see why, you grab him and dive sideways. A second later, several bullets hammer off the Gatherer’s Garden next to you.

The two of you are in cover behind a fallen column, but your assailants are unlikely to stay still long. The man with has no visible weapons but his left arm is clearly full of power.

Neat, old man winter! Joking

I suggest we ask him how familiar is with his power, and if he have a solid understanding, we may elaborate some plan. Otherwise, let's take ye old shotgun (or cannon or tank or whatever gun we have)
>>
>>29390912
Since he just took the shot, I'm betting he's about as familiar with his as we are with ours. Our only real hope is that he's got more plasmids under his belt than that one, and therefore at least some familiarity with the concept overall.

It's a large and rather ornate revolver, referred to as the Hand Canon, but I think a discussion is off the cards right now. Yelling "USE THE PLASMID" isn't though.

Drawing your gun, you click back the hammer with your thumb and say in a level voice “Mind trying out your fancy new arm against whoever’s shootin’ at us?” before springing up right with the Canon held out before you. You see two figures about forty metres away, both with the distinct shapes of rifles in their arms. It’s not an easy distance to shoot over and the Canon can be a little unreliable over any distance more than twenty metres, so the shoot you squeeze off is more to scare them than anything. You take a few quick steps to your left and crouch behind the counter of an ice cream hut. The man is still sitting behind the column, looking shell shocked and over come. Sighing, you pick up a small piece of rubble, presumably once part of the column, and throw it at him. It bounce off his ear and shakes him from his reverie.

His eyes clear a little and he swallows, before heaving himself up and thrusting his left hand out dramatically. For a tense second, nothing happens. Then a ball of flame appears with a loud ‘Whumph’ of roasted air and flies away from him toward his opponents. Although it’s somewhat off course and hits a pot plant (setting it aflame), both the figures scramble for cover in a panic. Looks like they haven’t got any juice of their own. A tidy spot of luck.

“Fellas, we ain’t easy pickings, we’re tough ‘uns. You might want to go and find some softer targets, rather than bleeding dry over us” You drawl, from behind cover. Over the panicked breathing of your new friend and the burning of the pot plant, you can hear muttering and scrabbling as the two converse and move closer t you. After you’ve said you piece, the movement seems to stop and the muttering intensifies. After a minute or so, a strangely stretched voice issues from some distance away; “Alright Mister, we just want to get to the Garden. You get gone and we won’t follow” echoed by a “Yeah, git!” from the other. You glance questioningly at your companion who shrugs his thin shoulders.

As it's common knowledge for Rapture citizens, I should shed light on this; Adam can exist in a steal able form, but only when Little sisters extract it. It is drawn from Sea Slugs that live around Rapture and is harvested into plasmids and such. When a splicer dies, the Adam used in their plasmids can be extracted by a sister who uses her body to store it, hence the sucking cups on the syringes. To get it, you really need to take down a bid daddy and get to the sister.

Possible, if you can acquire a lot of them. But they live in the deep sea around the city, so you'll need a diver's suit. For which you'll need a Big Daddy, as they're the only ones who use them.
>>
>>29391711
Well, I know what my goal in this quest is now. Diving suit power armor to establish ourselves as an Adam-sourcing warlord. Fuck yeah.

“Alright, we’ll go. Got no use for the machine anyway. We’re going to move out the corridor to the right, but we’ll be ready for funny business. Watch yourselves boys” With that, you confidently stride out towards your new pal. After grabbing him by the elbow you walk quickly down the corridor you came from. There’s some rattling behind you but no shots, much to your relief.

As soon as you’re round the corner, you duck into cover and pull the man with you. Now that you are relatively safe, you ask the man his name and story. He swallows a little before talking and then begins. “Well, I’m James Gallagher, at your service. I used to be an English teacher but then the riots came and I had to leave my district. I came here to stay with my sister, but her house was ramsacked when I got there. I was wondering along when I found the Gatherer’s Garden with a full plasmid sitting there unused. I’ve never tried it before and I was scared so I thought ‘Where’s the harm?’ and took it. Then you and those men appeared. Who do I have the pleasure of conversing with?”

“Well, I’d bet my last dollar that the people who looted my place hit your sisters as well. You’re welcome to join me while I look for ‘em” You offer, managing to make it seem like a generous offer and not an invitation to a deadly fire fight. He leaps on the chance, nodding madly. The two of you shake on it and are about to stand up and be on your way when a scream of rage comes from the direction of your former foes. It sounds like “He took it! Bastard took my fire!” or something similar. There’s the both of a shotgun blast, a pained scream that’s abruptly halted by another blast and then silence. You both strain to hear, before you stick you head over the top of the low wall you’ve been crouching behind.

You see one of the splicers who fired at you come into view around the corner. Fresh blood is dripping from his side and his eyes and movements betray a complete lack of control with jerks, twitches and rapid blinking. He snarls as he catches sight of the top of your head and raises the shotgun that clearly ended the life of his comrade. You duck just before it might’ve ended yours. The pellets rip a chunk out of the wall and shower you in dust. You hear “It was mine, paid for fair and square! I had to leave it to get some Eve, but it were still mine!” before another blast hits the wall.

You look at James, who seems more terrified than ever. You can’t say you would’ve done differently if you had found a plasmid just lying around but it’s a nuisance that damn shame he had to pick up this psycho’s fix.

Well, now seems like as good a time as any to test out the shiny hand. You raise the Canon into the air and fire a round at the ceiling. Its distinctive boom makes even the berserk splicer dive for cover and use the opportunity to stand up and out of cover. When his head pops up, you fire another round near it, punching a huge hole in the wall. Rather predictably, he doesn’t try to look out again. You can see his feet moving as he shifts himself for a dive and you raise your left hand in readiness. You’re only half a dozen metres from him, so whoever shoots first will kill the other and neither of you are going to miss. The seconds slip away agonisingly slowly as you wait for him to make a move with your glowing blue hand still raised in front of you.

Then he leaps out from cover, almost horizontal in the air, his finger on the trigger of the gun. Too bad your hand has no trigger. As quick as a thought and much more deadly, the lightning leaps from your fingertips and earths itself in his chest. Its sheer concussive force throws him back and slams him into a wall, before he slides down it into a crackling heap. You go over and find him alive. A round from the Canon fixes that.

So, this things isn’t one-shot-one-kill. Disappointing but better for taking thugs alive, you think as you reload you trusty revolver and beckon to James. The two of you walk through Olympus Heights after the trail of the looters, James nervously cleaning his glasses on his shirt while you take a few puffs from a cigarette, like the ice cold sunnofabitch you are.

Rounding a corner some fifteen minutes from house, you come upon a fairly crowded square. It seems like a pretty peaceful gathering on the whole, with few weapons on display and none drawn. Almost twenty people are moving around and browsing the shops and newspaper stands that seem to be open. In this square you could be forgiven for thinking things were still normal in Rapture. As you look across to the other end, you see a man tucking into a hot toasted sandwich and you stomach growls in envy. Must have been some time since you ate and James looks equally hungry.

>Get a bite?
>Talk to anyone?
>Move straight through after the trail?
>>
>>29392558
>>29392538
Unless I'm mistaken, we have no cash, so unless James is buying, we're shit out of luck on food. Still, these folks might have seen some people coming through here loaded down with belongings and possible a lady, moving a bit too quick and looking suspicious. Couldn't hurt to ask around.

Also, uh, how much ammunition do we have? We blasted away a whole lot in that fight just to get an opening to zap the dude. Bad trigger discipline.
>>
>>29392558
>Let's get a bite to eat, talk to James and get an idea about our case, then probably start asking around about any recent looting.
We on a case.

>>29392615
Again, I'm sorry, I should have posted an inventory somewhere.

>Cash: $48
>Ammo: 32 rounds for the Cannon

And think of the bad trigger discipline as the two 3s that were rolled.
>>
>>29392558
Should'a had James grab that shotgun. Ah well.
>>29392615
This guy has the right idea.
>>
>>29392637
Ah. Then yeah, let's grab a few bites. As long as we don't keep going spray and pray with a goddamn revolver, we should be good on ammo for quite a while now, though.

>>29392650
Shit, yeah, we should have had him grab it. That or one of the rifles they had.
>>
>>29392650
Expanding on this, is there looting of any type? Those splicers had guns, presumably ammo, maybe cash or Adam on them. At this rate, our ammo isn't going to get us very far.

But other than that you can loot away. I was going to let people think of it without prodding, which you have now. You could send James back to loot or just make sure to do it next time.
>>
>>29392732
I don't think splitting up in rapture is a good idea. Not that splicers would carry more than 5 bucks so it's not worth it.

Continue on the trail!
>>
Deciding to be the bigger man, you shell out for a sandwich each for you and him, before you begin to eye the crowd in the square. Most of them look fairly normal, with only a few displaying the signs of a splicer. Apparently experienced ones that haven’t over dosed can hide the signs of their powers, but both you and James are too green to reign in the blatant energy displayed on your arms. Even just a few months ago, there wouldn’t have been half as many guns in evidence. As it was, there were at least a six visible handguns and probably larger guns stored in the stores for security. Tense times.

You spy a few people who seem likely to know of looting; a young man in a rabbit mask that covers half his face who sits at the edge and stares while sipping his coffee; an old man trying selling watches to whoever comes close; a thin woman with unhealthy skin who is the only person in the square who shows the signs of an addicted splicer. The only question was who to ask first.

>Ask the Rabbit man?
>Ask the watch seller?
>Ask the addict?

>Got a few other things happening, so updates will be a tad slower for a bit.

Casually sitting down next to the strange adolescent, you nod your head towards the mass of milling shoppers. “Good to see people acting peacefully, ain’t it? Particularly after all the looting that’s been going on” No sense beating round the bush. The rabbit seems to consider your words before nodding and drinking more of the coffee. The lack of steam and the ease with which he drinks from it tells you that it must be almost stone cold. Strange guy.

“You know, only this morning I would have been ready to kill a few looters myself. But seeing this sort of peace, well it almost makes me forget all about it. Just out of curiosity, you wouldn’t know where they went, would you?” Here you tilt your head and angle your body a little, letting the brim of your hat cover your eyebrows and the handle of the Canon pokes out of your jacket. It’s been proven, you’ve been told, that people see people without eyebrows as more intimidating. And you know that the sight of such a large gun in such a close proximity is pretty damn frightening.

Licking his lips, the boy considers his options. Then he makes a minute movement of his head towards an ocean view tunnel leading east, towards the elevator to Neptune’s Bounty. The Bounty was the docks and working district of rapture, home to the lord of all things bad that make money in Rapture; Frank Fontaine of Fontaine Fisheries. It makes sense that the looters might make for the Bounty, particularly if they have loot to fence. Getting stuff back from a bunch of crazy splicers? Easy. Getting stuff from Frank ‘Black hand’ Fontaine, without selling your soul? Damn near impossible. Better pick up the pace. That is, if this big eared freak is telling the truth.

>Believe him and go to the Bounty?
>Grill him for more?
>Ask someone else?

“Very kind, very kind indeed. I see you’re a man that knows which way the wind is blowing. Or the current, whatever. Now tell me, you hear tell of a lady Gallagher being transported by that group? Or any hostages taken? Don’t go doing anything silly, not when we’re gettin’ along so well” Now he’s staring into your eyes and looks scared. Good. After several moments, he makes a slightly strangled coughing sound and says, having cleared his throat, that he’d neither seen nor heard of any prisoners being taken by looters. A few people had been killed but no-one was unaccounted for.

You give a slow nod that suggests this is nothing you didn’t expect, and hand him $5 saying “If I don’t have to use stick, I hand out carrot. Maybe you can buy warm coffee this time” and walk away. You pass on the information to James, who looks disappointed but not surprised. After a little probing he reveals “Well, my sister wasn’t ever the same after she discovered Adam. She was hooked on it so much that she often stole from her work and me to allow her to buy more. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s part of the mob. Half the reason I never touched the stuff was because of what happened to her”. That changes the game a little.

There seems to be one expert on addiction in the area, though the expert in question is drooling and shaking like a leaf. Approaching with care, you and James manage to communicate your questions to the thin woman. She doesn’t say much but tells you that she did see several Adamites (A piece of slang you’ve never heard before) with the looters and that at least one was female. She also confirms they left in the direction of Neptune’s Bounty.

When you and James have left the square, you ask him how far he’s prepared to go to bring back his sister. The little skirmish you were in will be nothing compared to the Bounty. Down there, rioting started a month ago and hasn’t stopped since. A combination of mob rule and criminal power commands the streets while Fontaine gets rich on the chaos. James straightens up and tries to look as impressive as possible, saying he will go to whatever length is required.

>Do you follow the looters to Neptune's Bounty?
>Do you want to do anything else first?

>>29394729

With that, the two of you walk to the elevator. The sea view tunnel that you pass though does, as always, thrill you with a view of Rapture in all its glory. Then you reach the way down or, to give it its correct name, the Bathysphere. The Bounty is lower the Olympus Heights so you mostly go down. There was one change, to switch from the main line to the Neptune special, but the journey itself was smooth as can be. A pity the same could not be said for your arrival. As soon as you step out of the sphere, you see that things are far worse than imagined. Several corpses decorate the floor and blood is smeared on the walls, reading ‘What the sea gives, the sea takes’. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but still put the shits up you. Being more of a man, you don’t throw up like James but you do go a little green. This ain’t gonna be easy.

A metal pipe, golf club, pointed stick, list of harsh words, or basically anything we could arm him with would be nice.
It would likely take too long to swing by his place (and possibly our own).
I expect the most likely (and cost efficient) way would be to loot someone else (preferably someone that was attacking us and is no longer capable of doing so).
