Greetings /tg/. Finally, when I finally got some time, I want to use it well. Some of you remember the Black Locks? The pirate Space Marines? Now I've finally found the time to flesh them out, yet I want it to be (as everything else on /tg/) to be a community work.

For starters, I done something that the Black Locks lacked from the beginning, and this thing was a origin story. Why were they created? Who led them? Who was their first Chapter Master? What caused them to be gun and power cutlass swinging swashbucklers? Now I did it. Sadly I didn't make the story of how each of the Companies evolved, but that's something for later. Now lets have a general thread about the Black Locks.

I don't know how all of you will react to my writings, but I hope that if there will be something wrong with it, then you will add your own ideas on fixing things that you will think as inconsistent or lacking in lore...and I looked into the lore so not to screw with it. Only problem of the origin story I did is that it's long, so I put it on pastebin so that it would be easier for you to read. Here is the story (actually it's my first serious take, I even studied everything on Mary Sues and did everything in my power not to make them into ones and to justify some of the thinks they use):

http://pastebin.com/Ciyy3An6

So, lets start it.

And for those who don't know who they are: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Black_Locks
>>
>>29464006
Finally, I was waiting for this! Let's see that story then.
>>
>>29464006
Nice.

at some point, I keep telling myself, I will get around to updating the 1d4chan page.

Sadly my shitty, shitty job is rather sparing on the whole time off business and I have yet to get round to it.
>>
>>29464193
Well, I myself updated it once. Mostly with Marine, Chaos Marines and Eldar, and even did the Mourning Sons page on 1d4Chan. Seriously, going through all the threads of theirs and getting all the needed stuff to make them coherent was a nightmare.
>>
>>29464260
The Mourning Sons got a page? I was one of the anons working on that, and I thought it got trolled into oblivion.
>>
>>29464006
Story is nice. Especially about that Castor guy.
>>
>>29464327
Here's the proof. Problem is that I didn't know if what I did is what the original creators wanted, but I promised one anon that I'd save these marines form obscurity.
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Mourning_Sons
>>
>>29464366
Novamarines were the right pick. One anon suggested it in the past.
>>
>>29464415
I've seen worse. There's definitely some things that are missing, but like you said, picking them out of the cloud of HURR DURR TEARS MEANS SADNESS trolling would be hard.
>>
>>29464612
Well, at least I took out the best elements that seemed to be the ones that many anons on their threads agreed to, put them together and made them more coherent. If I missed something, then you're free to do anything with it.
>>
>>29464006
It ain't bad. it looks like a good story to me.
>>
>>29464890
I think that there should be more on this. Especially those battles of theirs...
>>
File deleted.
>>29465134
Oi lad. Take it easy. If this is yer first time then ya made it surprisingly well.
>>
If you want, I can post the story directly to the thread if nobody wants to go through the pastebin thing.
>>
>>29464006
Oi, nice to see these haven't been entirely forgotten. Do we need any more drawing to be done?

I'll not be able to do anything in this current thread, due to exams tomorrow and on Wednesday, but post some ideas and I'll see what I can do on Wednesday evening.

I like the backstory, though. We'll probably have to tone down the miraculous healing MacGuffin and a bit of the other somewhat weird stuff. A bit of the writing itself is a bit clunky, but it's not difficult to fix up, and the whole thing is all in all pretty good.

I was thinking about the last tenth company, as well that their fluff should be polished a little bit more.

Plus you really like the story? Sweet. In case of drawings, I'll need at least one with a typical Black Lock Marine like in pic related., but with power cutlass and boltlock pistol (you can add a cool pose for him).

Thanks for the help.
>>
>>29465971
I'll see to it when I have the time.

Also, have this. I made it way back and posted it, but have it again.

Also also, I'll be namefagging as "SirFrog" from now on, so giving you a heads-up.

Also also also, I'm surprised that nobody spotted the horrible pun in Jyvs Odane yet.

Additionally, you can replace the helmet with a fancy hat and mix Imperial with pirate.
>>

Thanks for the info. Plus remember the other drawings of yours that you once made? You also said that you'll do the other weapons. I'll be looking forward to them.

Just finished reading. On the whole I think it is fucking awesome.

Only peeve, and it is a small peeve, is that it was only the Crimson Blades who were mauled by Enslavers. Also the Chapter Master of the time:

"let no joyful voice be heard, let no one look up at the sky with hope and let this day be forever cursed by we who called forth exterminatus"

He dropped the nukes. Inquisitor Swan would not so he did what had to be done to prevent more suffering. His brothers on the surface were fighting in the star-port so just one more shuttle of refugees could escape the burning world. He briefly blamed the rest of the chapter for not getting there quickly enough, he briefly blamed the Inquisitor for not doing enough but ultimately he knew where blame rested. When he didn't turn up for breakfast the next day the serfs went to look for him. They found him in his cabin kneeling in prayer. He had switched his augmetic hearts off.
>>
>>29466404
The last part is nah. I'd think that he would actually try to do amends for what happened. Plus rather than Crimson Blades only, at least parts of the other Companies as to show that despite being a force to be reckoned with, the Black Locks are not invincible (as in Ultramarine level of invincibility). This one of the few tactics I wanted to use to avoid making them go into Mary Sue territory.
>>
>>29466583
Fair point. Your way now sounds better.
>>
>>29466670
Now that this is done, I also want to work with the anons that are interested with the Companies themselves. Like making the Crimson Blades simply into very courageous fighters that are protective of civilians and allies, or making the Rum Grails into a more comedic version of the Space Wolves (when they are off battle and minus the wolf prefix/suffix).

Also the 10th Company...I named them the Serpent Watch because nobody has decided in eight threads on how to name them. If you want I can post short summaries on the companies.
>>
>>29466864
would love to help but getting late and work in morning at shitty, shitty job. If still here tomorrow will help.
>>
>>29467064
If this thread will be around tomorrow...but thanks for the help.
>>
>>29467100
But I'll still post those summaries...
>>
The Black Cutlasses:
A company named after the titular obsidian blade that belonged to their founder Alexander, and the second largest company, they are a incredibly disciplined and balanced force. The Black Cutlasses are both capable fighters and tacticians known for their immense stubbornness (which sometimes lands them in serious trouble). The company’s members have greater knowledge of the structures of the organizations that make up the Calico Colonies, as well are good diplomats (which is greatly uncommon among Space Marines).

Captain Ahab. E. Teach (known as Blackbeard) is currently both the company’s leader and the Master of the Dread Fleet.
>>
The Crimson Blades:
The largest and mostly assault oriented of the companies, the Crimson Blades are the ones that are even more focused on close combat. Hot blooded and courageous (after their founder, Shaktu the Slayer), these marines are known for their often reckless attacks and winning battles in short time. Because of their recklessness, they have a larger than nominal number of Apothecaries that recuperate the lads after each fight, and who are responsible for many medical achievements. The Blades are organized in a similar fashion to the Blood Angels in that even after graduating to Tactical Marines (and after serving in the Devastator and Assault Squads), the marines are allowed to keep their Jump Packs. While all Black Locks are protective of civilians and Guardsmen, the Crimson Blades are even more so, and simply thinking about harming civilians invites disproportionate retribution from them.

The Current leader is Captain Peter “The Blooded”, who is also a skilled and knowledgeable Apothecary.
>>
>>29467166
Do that. Also, how good are you at 1d4chan? The page needs to be updated. A lot.

I'd help you, but I have exams tomorrow and I'd need some sleep too.
>>
>>29467260
I have enough experience to make a page and fill it with images and stuff, but I'm bad at cleaning.
>>
The Rum Grails:
Alcohol gourmets and party-loving marines off battle, hardy warriors on the battlefield. Specialized in medium and close ranged combat, the Rum Grails can quickly overcome enemies with melta and flamer based weapons. The marines have a large number of Chaplains that maintain discipline (as much as they have due to their revelry), as well to lead them to battle. They really love alcohol, thus they even import it from places beyond the Calico Colonies (such as Fenris). It’s thanks to them that the tradition of Eldar tavern wenches came into being and got spread to the other companies (much to the dissatisfaction of the Inquisition, especially the Ordo Xenos). The company’s Chaplains are known to guard the most precious of relics each of the companies have, so that they would be distributed to their respectful members, as well making the legendary Lock Rum.

The current Captain of the Rum Grails is the thrice mad Captain Sparrow, who was once a Corsair Heart back when Jones was still Captain, yet was put in stasis after he found out what Jones wanted to do. When he awoke, he didn’t see any sense in returning to his old crew (partially because how much they changed when they became the Serpent Watch, as well because they forgot about him) and joined the Rum Grails (where after a small friendly-fire incident involving a delusional Inquisitor, he became the new Captain). He has a extensive rivalry with a Renegade Marine by the name of Barbossa, as well with the Warp Cutters’ Captain Mondego. Not to mention that he is non-stop accompanied by Inquisitorial agent Norrington for his insane attitude.
>>
The Holy Treasurers:
Each of the Black Lock companies is responsible for their own equipment. How they gain it is achieved variously. Is it either by plundering the enemies of the Imperium, by selling valuable pieces for riches and then exchanged for new equipment, or through simple barter. The Holy Treasurers are the lucky merchants who use quick thinking in situations other than battle. They buy as cheaply as possible, and sell as expensively as possible. With this they are the richest of all the companies. Their ways of fighting resemble those of the Black Cutlasses, yet they aren’t as determined as them. They are noted to possess both great luck and a large amount of bizarre and exotic weapons for their veterans and leaders.

Their current leader is Captain Michiel, who is also nicknamed “He who sleeps in a sea of gold” or “Booty maker Michiel”.
>>
Void Plunderers:
The gear heads of the Chapter and the ones responsible for some the unique wargear the Black Locks have in their possession. Having a larger than usual number of Techmarines and servitors, these marines are also known for their hard work and discipline that is equal to that of the Black Cutlasses. Thanks to their innovative minds and co-operative nature, they created along with the Techmarines from other companies powerful wargears, partially re-created some of the tech from the Golden Age of the Imperium, as well reverse-engineered some of the STC they found and for the Chapter so that the ‘rust buckets from Mars’ wouldn’t get to be the only ones to use them. They are specifically tasked with providing the Chapter with new vessels. Although all Black Locks are experts on boarding ships when in space combat, the Void Plunderers are even better (considering that they have even larger quantities of Breacher Equipments of all the companies). On planets they fight, they use many insane devices (most of them still in the experimental phase, meaning that things not working perfectly appear on occasions) and the Castellax Battle automats they found and reverse-engineered (though they rarely do so since constructing and programming one takes a large amount of time and resources).

The leader is Marv the Mutilated. Once a Techmarine of incredible talent and knowledge (as well known for his seriousness), inventor of the infamous Lightning Cannon, now a Dreadnought after a incident involving Dark Eldar. He either takes over his flagship by plugging himself to the ship cogitator so that the rest of the crew could concentrate on boarding while he shoots and maneuvers, or he puts himself into his MK. IV Custom Dreadnought (that some believe he himself build from scratch). Nowadays, the strains of time are slowly making him senile even when he replaced part of his brain with a cogitator, thus some situations he leaves to one of his most trusted mate, 1st Mate “Iron Drake” Francis.

Myst Graves:
A grim and serious company, the Myst Graves are the specialists when it comes to doing dirty work. Specialized in assassinations, sabotage, explosions, terror tactics and overall total guerilla warfare, these marines are the only ones that employ Scout Squads (which make up most of their strike forces). The marines have little use of vehicles that are heavier than a Land Speeder, and only resort to typical Black Lock tactics if their methods will do little or nothing. They are also the ones that reintroduced Legion Reconnaissance Squads in the form of Cutthroats (elite veterans that either work as lone wolfs or as a entire squad). Due to the complexity of the equipment, the Reconnaissance equipment’s construction is time consuming, thus they deploy Cutthroats when the situation is severe enough that it requires it. They are also the only company that utilizes Temple Assassins. How did they do it and what kind of pacts they made that allows the assassins to walk on their ships (except for Eversors) without their handlers even stupefies some Inquisitors.

The current Captain is Brother Rackham who is always accompanied by two Callidus Assassins he named Annie and Marie.

Warp Cutters:
Adventurers, explorers and risk takers. Those are the things that characterize the Warp Cutters. These marines are known for the fact that unexplored areas work like magnets on them. Apart of these characteristics, they also have a weakness for fast vehicles. Of all the companies, they are the proud owners of their own custom made Jetbikes . These in turn were created from a irreversibly broken Legion Jetbike they found when their founder, Vasco Descubra, was still around, meaning that many things had to be replaced and modified. This resulted in the mass produced Jetbikes to become lighter, more fragile, lighter equipped, yet have incredible speed. However, the reason why they are the only owners is that the other companies consider them too dangerous and hard to maneuver (which the Warp Cutters are accustomed to). In battle, the Cutters put greater emphasis on blitzkrieg and hit’n’run tactics to strike at the weakest points in the enemy’s forces, tactically retreating only to hit again from a different direction. It’s also very hard to ambush them since they sport advanced sensors that they also use when scouting and exploring planets.

The current leader is Captain Montego who also has a rivalry with Captain Sparrow.

47 KB JPG
Blazing Cannons:
The Chapter’s heavy hitters. The Blazing Cannons specialize in heavy weapons, fast redeployment, and rapid entrenchment of key points on the battlefield. The ones that found the answer to the lack of artillery among the Black Locks by creating the destructive Siege Terminators. Just like the Crimson Blades, even after a marine graduated from Devastator and Assault Marine to become a Tactical Marine, the crewmen are allowed to keep their heavy weapons. This way the company can field more heavy weapons specialists than the rest of the Chapter, not to mention that they have a slightly higher number of Terminator and Centurion armors, as well they are fond of Ironclad Dreadnoughts.

Captain de Sores is the current leader of the company, and he’s known for being a frighteningly efficient besieger, as well a competent defender.

Would an army of Black Locks simply use the core Marine ruleset for weaponry and force creation?

- Hex Company:
Unique for having a larger than usually number of psykers, and practicing the mysterious Arts de Vaudon, this company is one of the most mysterious and very often observed by the Inquisition. The founder of the company was no one else as the infamous Demetrius Hex, hero of Pharus Colony and the Scourge of the Dimallum Cluster, and the one who taught the company members the Arts. In battle, Hex crewmen Lots are led by Aspiring Witch Doctors who provide psychic defense and offensive capabilities. Since the company has the smallest number of members, the Witch Doctors can bolster their force’s numbers by awakening the Zumboso. Animated undead slaves awakened through the Arts, Zumboso are those that were in life criminals and heretics so irredeemable that death itself was a fate too good for them.

The Hex Company is even more unique in that every other Witch Doctor who is part of a different Company is automatically a honorary member of their Lounge de Vaudon (a more tribal looking Librarium). Here the Doctors exchange new psychic techniques and wisdom between each other, brew strange concoctions, as well craft talismans for each of their Lads in their respectful companies.

The Hexes even have contacts with the Colonial Psykanas, thus if needed, then they can call in for additional Psykers and Astrophats (and with their even closer relationships to the Navigators of House Gentius, additional Navigators).

The company is always led by the Samdi Baron. It is believed that Demetrius Hex himself was the first Baron, and that the name became a ceremonial title given to exceptionally powerful Head Doctors.

>>29467784
Actually, due to their backstory, their way of warfare and the things they have, the Black Locks would fight with most of the core rules. But there would be loads of differences. A typical army would have some of their weapons more powerful or working in different ways than in normal Chapters.

Added that the Locks have even their own patterns of vehicles (not to mention their own unit formations), Stormravens and Storm Eagles replacing Land Riders and so on (not to mention that most units are close combat oriented), would make the Black Locks a daunting opponent, especially against ranged oriented forces when the Locks get into combat.

52 KB

The Serpent Watch:
In the past, The Serpent Watch was known as the Corsair Hearts. Boisterous, pragmatic in some situations, as well as passionate about fights. The Corsair Hearts were once the type of marines that were known for being arrogant, yet caring towards non-marines. That was however in the past, as a horrid act of betrayal that came from their former Captain Jones (now a Chaos Lord) changed the marines forever. The Corsairs since then changed considerably, becoming a frightfully efficient force that specializes with fighting Chaos. Thinking that their Captain’s betrayal was caused by their arrogance, they rid themselves of this part of them in favor of cold efficiency. And so, the Serpent Watch was born. Although they are seen as cold and harsh by both the rest of the Chapter and their allies, they still have some of the traits of what they were once. Even though they work with the Inquisition (despite the events that made them targets of suspicion and that in the past they hated to work with them), they try their hardest to wash away the stain that Jones left, as well to atone by eradicating his warband, The Hearts of Corruption, and sending his head to Terra. Also it’s worth to mention that they will abhor any Inquisitor that is either too radical, or is too zealous even by puritan standards (even going so far as to even execute the Inquisitor after gaining enough proof on him). Seeing their resolve and determination, the other companies declared that they would support the Serpent Watch in their hunt for Jones and help them regain their lost honor (as well to regain that piece of honor that the Chapter as a whole lost by Jones’s betrayal). In battle, the Serpent Watch acts mercilessly against Chaos followers and utilizes a number of rare devices that offers them the means to fight exceptionally powerful foes.

Their current leader is Captain Pedro ‘The Vengeful’, who’s known for being exceptionally ruthless when fighting Chaos Marines.

>>
>>29468215
There are still no rules nor even a unit/wargear/upgrades/vehicle/special character lists for the Chapter as a whole...on the other hand they would be like this:

- Rum Grails would field many meltas and flamers (as well their Dreds would have multi meltas and flame projectors).

- Warp Cutters would be tricky. Warp Cutter Jet Bikes would work like normal Jet Bikes (minus the toughness bonus) and would have one less Heavy Support and Elite Slot in favor of extra two Fast Attack Slots.

But that would be for another time. Firstly there is tons of fleshing out and even more to do on the Lock's enemies/allies, not to mention the Calico Stars themselves.

Pretty much Black Lock behavior. Yet I see them as both pirates from real life old times and stereotypical ones mixed with their romantic rebels version.

Fearless swashbucklers that loot and plunder the enemies of the Emperor (even going so far as to send some of the best of their loot to Terra itself). Though they are more actual Corsairs than the Red Corsairs themselves...

But some comedy among them would be fun.
