ok, so. The local ISP- time warner- is apparently having some sort of colossal meltdown on their network, and it's been fucking my shit all weekend. Lesson learned there- don't try to play merciless difficulty on PoE with a connection prone to monster lagspikes. Oh well, I didn't want that extra level this week anyway. haha!

How this is news is, well, I'm not sure when it'll cut entirely, or for how long. it's dropped for over an hour a couple of times, but seems to be relatively stable right now- guess we'll see. If I disappear, now you know why, and I'm sorry in advance if it happens.

Thankfully, your flight back to London heathrow wasn't beset by turbulence- your pilot doing an excellent job, you think, of catching the jet stream eastbound and using it to get a bit of a lead on the scheduled time, though the lead was rapidly eaten away by the need to navigate around weather, but you at least ended up landing on time, which is cause for celebration in and of itself.

You and Wendy were met by a pair of the household staff, dispatched at lady Dowding's orders. They'd helped you with the chest, allowing you and Wendy to see to your own bags. You didn't think it was necessary, honestly, you could have just as easily hired a taxi- but you figured complaining was pointless and foolish anyway, since you weren't inconvenienced at all.

You've already figured on talking to Ice about Wendy before approaching lady Dowding- after all, either she or Slider has to sign off on any attached personnel, and Slider's not around. You do intend to keep her around, though, especially considering what her past is, you're half convinced if she gets separated from you, she'll be sped off to some remote post where she's well beyond your help. You don't intend to even run that risk.

1/2
>>
You're greeted back at the Witch hold by the household staff- you instinctively slide a hair closer to Wendy when you notice the faint look of disdain on some of their faces at her. You're pretty sure the gesture was noted, though you can't bring yourself to really care. At this point, she's one of yours, at least so far as you're concerned, and no one fucks with your witches.

Even if they aren't technically yours at all.

You're directed to a room off the main entryway, both it's great oak doors closed. One of the house staff hurries ahead of you and opens the door, revealing a moderately sized dining hall, with most of the tables removed. Only a single one remains, seemingly out of place and dwarfed, even with the relatively small size of the room.

It comes as no shock to you, as you take the chest and shoulder it, ushering a hesitating Wendy in before you, that Ice is sitting at the table, with the lady Dowding seated nearby, chatting amicably with her. The rest of the room is empty, except for you- you almost feel like it's a trial of some sort when Ice's eyes lock on you.

“I believe, ma'am, this is yours.” You say, setting the chest down in front of her and handing her the keys. “I'm afraid, however, it's not pirate gold. Too light.”

Lady Dowding cracks a very faint smile at that, indicating a seat at the table. “Well, mister Bishop, I see your mission was a success.”

What, that this is ACTUALLY some kind of ordered penance for her grandfather's actions? This kind of thing is pretty much indefensible, and based on what Wendy has said and how those little tarts at the door acted, it looks like it's 100% true.
>>
>>31498204
thing is, Dowding may can't do much to help Wendy. She may can order other witches to stop... bullying Wendy. But that might just add to their ire for Wendy.

>>31498204
Think about it. Dowding pretty much RUNS the entire witch coven. All of this shit that happened to Wendy could not have possibly happened without at least her implicit approval. At best, she was wilfully ignorant. At worst, she gave the order herself.

[x] “Yes ma'am, though Matron Longstreet told me a few... disconcerting things.”

You nod. “Yes ma'am, though Matron Longstreet told me a few... disconcerting things.” You say, indicating to Wendy she should sit. For many failings you may have, mom always taught you to behave like a gentleman, and that means letting ladies sit.

She takes the seat after a bit of hesitation, and you see lady Dowding nod almost imperceptibly at the motion.

“I suspect, then, she attempted to sell you her vision of a united American coven?” She says, looking over as Ice looks at the foot locker almost reverently.

“Yes ma'am. I take it that's no great secret of hers?” You ask.

She laughs. “Of course not, Mister Bishop. And she's not entirely wrong, I am doing this, in a way, to prevent her from achieving that goal.”

You suddenly feel cold- like you've flown right into someone's gunsights, and there's no shield there this time.

She smiles again, accepting a saucer with a teacup on it. “If the situation were different, of course, this kind of thing wouldn't be such an issue to me. Were she able to do it, a united American tradition would be a very strong one indeed, perhaps eclipsing even our coven's influence on the world.”

“But?” You find yourself asking.

“But in this case, it's unacceptable.” She says. “The secret behind you and Young miss Wells' extraordinary ability cannot be permitted to become a monopoly, mister Bishop. The level of upheaval and chaos that could cause would be-”

She pauses and shakes her head.

“I do not deal in hypothetical situations normally, mister Bishop. However, in this case, the potential catastrophe were one coven to attempt to keep the secret of your... abilities to themselves is too great to risk.”

>>
I wouldn't be surprised if Dowding had just done what she could to minimize the damage to Wendy until the opportunity came up to send her elsewhere. I don't think it's a coincidence that she sent her with Frank.
>>
>>31498645
which is why we ask her to transfer wendy to Spellcaster
>>
“We're not that good.” you say, surprised. “I mean, I've been shot down once, and-”

She smiles. “Mister Bishop, it's not about you individually. However, how many more are there out there like you? How many young witches like Miss wells? What if your.. bond, I suppose, what if your bond could be replicated among any man with your talent and any witch? There are too many unknowns, mister Bishop, and the risk is too great.”

You nod- you suppose it makes sense. You can't imagine what would happen if a matron like Longstreet was allowed to hold custodianship over whatever it is between you and Merlin- after seeing Annapolis and the way the witches there acted towards her, you aren't sure you want to know. You're not sure you agree with the concept, part of you feels like this should belong to America and not the world at large, but the idealistic part of you says she's right.

“Now, Mister Bishop, I rather suspect Miss Kazinski is anxious to see what her grandparents left her. If you wish, we can discuss that topic more later.”

[] “No, I think we're good.”
[] “Yeah, I think I'd like to, actually.”

The US military might prefer the the info be known to everyone than just the US. While it would give the US an advantage as a whole it would make the American coven significantly more powerful internal force as well.

If they specifically had that info I could easily see them forcing control of any joint pilot-witch program under them directly.

[x] “Yeah, I think I'd like to, actually.”

You nod. “Yeah, I think I'd like to, actually.”

She nods. “Very well. Perhaps after dinner tonight? I suspect you're not at all sure what you did was correct, now.”

You shrug. “It was right for Ice. That's enough for now. I can't take the footlocker back, but then again, I don't really need to if I want to work exclusively with her, do I?”

She nods. “Excellent point, Mister Bishop.”

Ice, unable- or unwilling- to wait any longer, opens the lock with a quiet click. It's been maintained, but the lock is still rusty- it squeaks as she pulls it clear of the simple latch and flips the lid of the locker up.

Inside, a yellow envelope sits atop a folded green wool blanket- you recognize the type from your brother's family day tour of his platoon's bay at basic. It's somewhat faded, but still looks to be in good condition- though you suspect it's only covering the rest as a measure of protection.

You hand Ice your pocket knife as she picks up the letter, and she uses it to cut the top of the envelope open, pulling out a couple sheets of folded notebook paper. Wordlessly, she hands your knife and the envelope to you.

You set your knife on the table, and turn the envelope over. On the front is written “For our granddaughter”, with a smudged out date- perhaps there was some water damage after all? You hope not.

Ice reads the letter quicker than you'd have thought possible, tears forming in her eyes as she does so. Finally, she sets the letter down and gently pulls the blanket off the top, revealing several boxes- some large, some small.

“Are you ok?” Wendy asks, quietly. Ice nods, but just barely, slowly pulling out a box and opening it.

Inside sits a ring made out of pilot wings- very, very old ones, by the looks of it. What catches your eye, though, is the small diamond set in the center of the shield.

“Wow.” You say. “Who's was that?”

1/2
>>
>>31499839
Does she? Even assuming she now has Ice 100% on her side after retrieving the chest for her, what does she have? She removed a piece of ammo from Longstreet's arsenal that wasn't doing anything anyway.

She's certainly going for the soft approach: helping ice, getting Frank a fancy title/position, and probably agreeing to transfer Wendy. But she doesn't actually have anything to force Frank and Merlin to do anything. There's nothing stopping Frank and Merlin from changing their mines and going back to Longstreet or O'Hare

“M-my grandmother's.” Ice says. “Her wedding ring. My grandpa had them made out of his wings.”

You nod. “Those are old, old wings, too. World war one, even.”

She hesitates, looking at the letter again. “G-grandma wrote here that the diamond is a focus.”

“May I see it?” Lady Dowding says, slipping on a pair of glasses as Ice hands her the ring. “Ah, I see. Your grandparents must have spent a small fortune on this, Miss Kazinski. The focus is a work of art.”

“It should glow.” Ice responds. “Grandma says it should, anyway.”

Lady Dowding nods, handing it back. “That is an old trick used by some of the older focus makers. The focus retains part of the energy it channels, a tiny bit, and uses it to emit light. This one has probably just lain unused too long, I'm sure the glow will return if you use it.”

Ice nods, pulling out a few more boxes, then a single, larger one from the bottom.

She and the other witches all look shocked when she opens it- revealing a disassembled M1 Garand with another letter laid carefully on top. Hurriedly, ice reaches for your knife- stabbing her palm in her haste. She cuts the envelope open, putting the knife down and shaking the contents out- a single sheet letter. The envelope has no writing on it that you can tell.

“G-grandma's-” She says, haltingly, reading it.

“I haven't seen a rifle like that in a long, long time.” Lady Dowding says. “At least since the war.”

“Is- is there an armory?” Ice says, flipping the letter over and attempting to compose herself. “I- I need to- to-”

Lady Dowding shakes her head. “Not here, I'm afraid.”

“There's one at Uxbridge.” Wendy says, quietly. “I could probably get you in.”

[x] Let's go, Ice and I can handle any issues that pop up.

You weigh your options- this doesn't seem like the best idea, especially with her acting like she is, but at the same time, you know her, and you trust she knows what she's doing, even like this.

However, that doesn't stop you from pulling out a red handkerchief and folding it over, making a bandage. You grab Ice's wrist, feeling her stiffen at the sudden motion- then let her arm go limp in your grasp. “Be more careful, Boss.” You admonish. “Or I'll have our new RAF liaison here sit on your chest.”

“N-New?” She says, looking at you, then at Wendy, and focusing her eyes- you see the spark come back into them, her brain rapidly switching gears back to command and control of a unit. “Her?”

You nod, shooting a glance over at Lady Dowding, who's watching without saying anything. “Yeah.”

“You think she's qualified?” She says.

You shrug, looking at wendy. “Tell her what you told me, about everything.”

Wendy squeaks. “E-everything?” She asks. You nod.

“Yeah, everything.” You say.

“W-well... I don't really know where to start.” Wendy says.

“What Strikers do you fly?” Ice asks, business like, rapidly packaging the components of the rifle back in their case.

“Tornado ADVs.” Wendy replies. “W-well, that's usually what I'm assigned to.”

Before she can continue, Lady Dowding interrupts. “If you'll excuse me.” She says. “I've summoned the car, it will be out front shortly to take you to Uxbridge. However, I must go, I've a meeting at the palace.”

You nod, distracted, as she leaves and Wendy tells Ice her story- you notice with some gratification the gathering storm clouds on Ice's face as Wendy’s tale carries on. “That's damn near treasonous.” Ice says, after Wendy finishes. “Yeah, I think you're more than welcome to fly with us.”

“R-really?” Wendy asks, looking back at you, surprised. “You mean it?”

>>
We're going to have to call in an airstrike on Time-Warner aren't we...
>>
“Of course I- oof!” Ice gets out as Wendy slams into her, wrapping her in a hug that looks every ounce as powerful as some you've been on the receiving end of.

Outside, the car sits, idling, the driver the same that picked you up from the airport. You let Ice and Wendy get in first, taking the front passenger seat for yourself.

The drive is quiet, though you can hear the two witches in back talking quietly. You, meanwhile, feel about like a cat on a screen door- lousy limeys don't even know which side of the road to drive on!

You arrive at Uxbridge- thankfully unharmed and step out, helping first Wendy, then Ice. You feel a glare coming in from somewhere, but you can't place it- and don't care, even if you could.

“The armory is right over here.” Wendy says, leading the way towards a plain brick building. “There's an attached range that's hardened for witches.” She says, excitedly. “I-I can help put your rifle back togther if you need me to, I've wor-”

“Look what the cat dragged in.” A female voice says from beside you. “I thought we finally got rid of you, Maloney. And who's that with you, some poor sods you've taken in? Been spreading yourself around again?”

Wendy goes beet red- but looks at her shoes. “I-I never did- a-any of”

“And you're a liar too? I shouldn't expect any better. Now, since you're here, there's mopping to be done at the recruit center.”

The source of the voice is a tall brunette, the bars of a Wing commander on her jacket epaulets.

[x] Let Ice field this one. She's already mad at the RAF about Wendy, this should be fun.

You reflect, quite rightly, that Ice, despite the vacation, has been under a lot of pressure. Oh, you've done what you could to reduce it- for the most part, everything within your power- but you know it's not enough. Nowhere near like anything approaching enough.

The footlocker helped immesurably, but it screwed her emotions, and, more importantly, her self control, all to hell, and that will take time to settle. Until it does, you think, she's a walking bomb. A big one. Like on the order of megalith prime, that big.

And this hapless wing commander just tripped her detonators. You'd get to cover, but it wouldn't matter, you're all dead anyway. Well, would be, if she were a bomb.

Instead, you reflexively reach out an pull Wendy back and away, out of the line of fire, shielding her with your body as Ice pivots her head slowly, her eyes fixing on the wing commander with enough arctic fury blazing through the witch takes a step back.

“Wing commander.” Ice says, the fury in her voice seething through. “I expect you have an excellent reason for speaking to my witch like that.”

“Your witch?” The wing commander scoffs. “She's RAF, not... whoever you are.”

1/2
>>
“USN.” Ice supplies. “VF-3. Spellcaster.”

The wing commander's eyes narrow. “Spellca-”

“And right now, I am not someone you want to fuck with over a witch you clearly hate. We can do this two ways.” Ice says. “We can go to your office, fill out transfer paperwork, and have her released to me right now, or I can bounce your head off the pavement until I lose interest and then I can go get her released to the American coven through the matron London. Take your fucking pick.”

“Was that a threat?” The witch says, her familiar- some kind of cat- popping out.

Ice responds in kind- you feel the immediate ambient temperature drop by about fifteen degrees, sending goosebumps shooting across your exposed skin.

Ice leans in. “Bitch it was a promise. Do you really want to do this?”

This looks like it could get ugly, fast. You've even noticed the street's clearing off- people can tell it's about to go south.

C-c-c-catfight?!

Worried about both options; locking it down ourselves just makes Ice look ill-tempered in front of a particularly bitchy RAF Wing Commander, potentially hurting professional relations between Spellcaster and the RAF proper. And just nearly getting into a fight is not likely to improve that Wing Commander's opinion of her.

But letting them go at it is just as bad, considering that it could be observed that Ice instigated hostilities in response to bully-mode. She could get in serious trouble here if we don't try for some sort of diplomatic option.

[X] Boss! Not here, not now. Calm down.

“Boss!” You call, walking forward and putting your hands on her shoulders, looking down into her face- she's looking just past you. knowing that this situation is about a breath from blowing up, you're in a bad place to be, but you've got no choice.

“Boss, c'mon. We don't deal with smalltime bitches here.” You say, shaking her gently. “Boss! C'mon. We'll clear the transfer through lady Dowding.”

“Why,” the RAF witch says from behind you “Do you seem to think the matron London will actually help you?”

You half turn, looking at the witch- noting she's wearing pants. Pfft. Non combat bitches. “She appointed me guardian of the boss, here.” You say. “Which, honestly, is the only reason I'm stepping in.”

“Guard- you're kidding.” She says. You shake your head, feeling Ice push against your hands- she's mad if she's trying to go through you.

You look back to her. “Boss! Let it go. We can handle this from Barin if we need to, not out here on the street.”

Her eyes snap over to you, some of the energy flowing out of them as they focus on your face. “I- yeah, sure. Bishop, let's just go back to the castle and spend the rest of leave there. This town just pisses me off.”

Merlin probably didn't get emotionally abused. She just got told a truth she couldn't bear listening to: as a strike witch, she's worthless. She can't operate modern strikers. Everyone else in her class probably could.

I'm willing to believe there's a huge misunderstanding as to what actually happened at the academy. Merlin probably got trash talked by other witches because PROTIP: children are petty and cruel to outsiders. That and being told she couldn't be a strike witch (for the right reasons) was too much for her to bear.

I am curious as to why she got sent to Spellcaster to begin with. It's obvious she had no potential as a strike witch... so her other talents must have been special enough that they thought she could still do good in the Navy in other ways.

Besides which, everything we've seen about her teaching and instruction is that it's pretty orthodox and designed to form a cult if personality around her and her ideas.

That's pretty much the opposite of what you want to do if you are after innovation and independence.

Longstreet doesn't want independence as such.

She just wants to be a new George Washington, to be feted and praised for breaking America free if the oh-so evil old world, and damn anything that gets in the way of that.
>>
>>31504764
There's probably another Matron at Annapolis, perhaps a teaching matron, who saw something in her and found her a slot. As O'hare proves not all American matrons are quick to write people off.

She was actively discarded by the instructors at an all-girls institution where the prestige of being a strike witch is everything.

There's no way she *didn't* suffer horrible abuse.
>>
>>31505064
>Technomancy that she did not display in any form until the beginning of the Third World War.
No, she was still able to talk with the Tomcat at the very beginning of the quest, before the war.

It was her ability to talk with other machines she is not plugged into, and command them, that was awakened after the war started.

Also pretty sure that her ability to generate a shield with the built-in Focus was pre-Top Gun and before the war started.
>>
>>31505119
That's not the fault of the instructors. Military academies aren't there to make special snowflakes, they're there to make officers...and witches in this case. Much as it sucks for Merlin those instructors, given their level of knowledge, were somewhat in the right.

>>
>>31505271
I don't disagree with the assertation that Longstreet went about it in a cuntish way. However, given the knowledge she had at the time, it was not her responsibility to take special interest in a midshipman (midshipwoman? witch-in-training?) who had very few readily apparent skills as a witch. It also really isn't her job to be concerned with Merlin's feelings any more than any one else's feelings in the academy
>>
>>31505271
What?

If you strip this all down, Merlin's rejection is akin to a guy failing OCS because he wasn't physically able to complete road marches. How is failing an officer (witch) candidate who can't make the cut an evil act?

More likely, Merlin took an administrative decision as a personal rejection of her as a human being because, oh I don't know, she was fucking 14 or something at the time? Unreliable narrators exist, shockingly enough.

>And as such, was certainly abused, humiliated and vilified by the rest of the student body.

Now you're just making shit up to hate Longstreet over. It's equally as likely (if not moreso) that when it was discovered that she couldn't be a strike witch, they made her leave Annapolis and go to another training program.

The only witch we've seen give Merlin a hard time for her lack of witchness was her own sister. And unless you want to blame THAT on Longstreet...

She's and instructor at an academy and therefore has a legal duty of care to the cadets/students/whatever, military or not.

She has clearly showed no interest in fulfilling that duty of care given her utter lack of regard for the clear distress Merlin's displayed regarding Annapolis as an institution.

Longstreet doesn't deserve to be called an instructor or teacher. She's just a filthy politician.

>>31505377

You gently push her away, forcing her back from the RAF witch- who's got the good sense to at least let you go. “We ougghta enjoy the rest of the week out here while we can, boss.” You say, quietly enough that it doesn't carry, but loudly enough that both Wendy and the RAF witch can hear it. “I mean, afterall, we just got such nice rooms...”

She looks at you- her face a lot closer to yours than you're sure your comfortable with. She nods, slowly. “You're right, Frank. It'd be a shame to head back to the castle so soon after getting those rooms in the hold.”

You grin, hearing someone choke behind you- points scored, there. “Now, what room is Wendy sleeping in?

“Mine.” Ice answers instantly, looking over. “Flight Lieutenant, get your personal belongings and your rifle then meet us here. Clear?”

Wendy snaps off the quickest- and most precise salute you've ever seen. “Ma'am.” And sprints off- girl can move, no doubt.

>>
You look back at the wing commander- one who's still standing there. “You know,” You remark, dully. “Hanging out in a place you almost got bounced in isn't exactly the best idea. You seen much combat?”

“I- why should I answer that?” She responds, heated.

You shrug, calmly. “Just asking. Me, I like to get out of the killzone as fast as I can if I'm not the one doing the killing. Just saying.”

“This isn't over.” She says, holding up a finger, but dismissing her familiar- which you'd dearly wish Ice would do, given the waves of frigid air she's putting off.

You squint to make out her nametag. “Of course it's not, miss Leigh-Mallory. However, you'll have to continue it when we get back to castle barin.”

She nods curtly and stalks off.

“You think she'll follow through?” Ice asks, calmly.

You shrug again. “I don't know, and honestly don't care. If she's the RAF aggressor she's going to put on a piss poor showing compared to the rest of those girls.” You say.

She nods, the looks morosely at the box in her hands. “Well, I guess I won't get to shoot it yet...” She says, sounding incredibly sad about that fact.

Sure, but her duty extends no further than it does with any other student. Telling a student she's a special snowflake when she has no apparent witch powers might have been nicer, but is not the job of the military. As an analogy: sure, Daredevil could probably fly, but without knowing he's Daredevil no flight instructor in the world is responsible for trying to teach a blind man how to fly

[] sure why not both. Don't think we've done a both this thread yet.

“So, anything special about it?” You ask, indicating the boxed weapon. “Besides it being your grandma's, I mean.”

She nods. “It's been blueprinted. And it's got integral focii.”

“F- wait, like, multiple?” You ask. “Just how much money did she drop on that? Those aren't cheap, are they?”

She shakes her head, sitting down on the curb. “She wrote that, after my father was born, she got some money from an account set up in France, pre-revolution. It's still there, most of it.” She laughs, bitterly. “I'm rich, I guess.”

“You were talking about your new rifle.” You remind her.

She nods. “Right, sorry. After dad was born, she got out some money, trying to get grandpa to retire. He was a test pilot. He didn't. I think it's just in you pilots' blood.” She looks over at you. “Anyway, when dad- when-”

She stops, and shakes her head, sniffing. You wrap one arm around her shoulder, giving her a sort of sideways hug. “Thanks.” She says, wiping her nose. “When dad- died, Grandma was devastated. She got out some more money, made grandpa promise that if she couldn't leave the footlocker for me, he had to, then sent the rifle to friend- one of the gunsmith witches, I guess they flew for her during the war? Anyway, she sent to the rifle to them and died in her sleep.”

“Damn.” You say, quietly- you knew your grandparents, although your granddad died before you graduated, he knew what you were doing and approved, often making you promise to sneak him up on a flight one day.

You'd planned to, too.

Ice shakes her head. “I'm just- I'm tired, Frank.” She says, quietly. “I know you and Slider worry, and I'm sorry.”

“Don't be sorry.” You say, jostling her. “Enjoy the rest of leave, that's what we're going to do. Starting with that rifle.”

“Speaking of rifles...” She says, standing up as Wendy comes running back, a beat up army ruck sack on her back and an L85 in her hands.

“Wendy, is that what they gave you? One of those?” Ice says, her voice sounding disgusted.

Wendy actually smiles. “Yes ma'am!” She says, patting the rifle. “Tessa and I are close friends! I know they don't have a good reputation, but I did a lot of work on her! You'll see.”

“I guess...” Ice says, sounding doubtful.

You hope it works out, you're kind of starting to like Wendy- she's a font of enthusiasm it seems like. Good person to stick to Ice and hope some of the good vibes rub off. Walking behind the witches, you grin as the thought comes to you. Yeah, that's exactly what you'll do- and you'll get Slider in on it too, so Ice can't complain.

This is the best plan you've ever had. Well, at least, within the past couple weeks, you figure.

It is late on Castle Barin, and Konstantina Stalinka cannot sleep.

She has gotten used to the idea that Frank Bishop is not at the castle, which as far as she's concerned defeats the entire purpose of her being there. She has even gotten used to the numerous... lesser witches she frequently encounters. While her respect towards this Spellcaster squadron has grown, as they are clearly the heralds of The Pilot, she does not quite understand the rest of NATO's supposed best. But she now can tolerate them, and this personal growth is something she is very proud of.

Normally witches would have quickly stood aside as she prowled the corridors of her old barracks. Here, they are ignorant... or for some reason they are friendly. The younger ones have even approached her in awe!

She will never admit this to anyone, but she does find some enjoyment in that last bit.

But this late at night, Barin is quiet, and seemingly abandoned. Nobody walks the halls but Konstantina. In some of the rooms she walks past, she can hear excited conversation and laughter. She wonders what it is they are so enthusiastic about, but not enough to try and join in. She has already been warned enough about 'incidents' she could provoke, and does not want to be sent home.

She is hungry, and she wishes Frank Bishop walked the halls with her.

"The kitchen then!" Konstantina declares, marching swiftly and with purpose. The French woman, Mrs. Lemare, has cooked excellent meals this week, and there have always been leftovers.
>>

(should be Mrs. Mackintosh, goddamn)

The dining area thankfully seems just as empty as the corridors leading to it have been. Konstantina refuses to risk being discovered. She peeks carefully through the circular window, ducks out of sight, and presses her back against the door. One hand turns the handle slowly as she pushes against the door, freezing every time the hinges begin to creak.

Eventually, there is enough space for her to squeeze herself into the dining room, which she does by promptly falling over her own two feet towards the ground. She manages to stop the fall with one hand, grips tightly to the carpet, and throws herself the rest of the way into the room, rolling once and coming to her feet. She whirls around once, looking for potential witnesses to her display, and finds none.

She sighs with relief, still alone.

She has heard the Shark Sisters complain about gaining weight from all the meals here. It's a ridiculous notion for combat witches like herself... but she can't shake the thought from her mind that she should perhaps not be here, not out of fear of being caught, nobody would ever know she was here.

She just remembers hearing the Sharks complaining to Bishop's Little One, the Merlin, about cheesecake "makin' a girl fat", and she is forced to block a horrific thought from her mind even as she tiptoes her way to the refrigerator.

'I will simply work it off by teaching these NATO witches real combat tactics, as I always have!' she thinks confidently. Her mouth waters as she opens the fridge, spying her objective immediately.

"You are mine, cheesecake."

-

The door to the dining area is cracked open slightly when Katya Litvyak reaches it, a gentle light pouring from under the door.

'Some one else has the same idea.'
>>
>>31508541
>Bishop's Little One, the Merlin
Aww...that's kind of a cute way to refer to her
>>
>>31508541
Katya is, quote Comrade Slider, "stressed the fuck out." All of Spellcaster is, so she does not complain to anyone often, but she is feeling the pressure. Matron and after matron approaches her on a regular basis during the day, trying to get more information out of her about a certain pilot and is frankly unbelievable combat skills. Younger witches, particularly those familiar with her lineage and unique situation among the NATO forces, also pester her... though she wouldn't tell them they were pestering her.

She is starting to hate conversations about rescue romances quite a bit now.

The source of those conversations, Frank Bishop, is not at Castle Barin, and to Katya's chagrin he is with Comrade Ice... in London. Where she wanted to be. With him.

Damn it. So it was her idea to begin with, but it was... frustrating.

Mrs. Mackintosh's meals at night have been the source of comfort to Katya. She is reminded of grandmother and mother every time she sits at the table. The food is different, but the warmth she feels among her new family is familiar, and welcome.

Katya wanders closer to the door, spinning around as she does to make sure nobody sees her. She peeks in through the windows, and notices a plate on one of the tables, a half eaten slice of cake on it. She sighs with relief. Merlin has probably decided on a late snack after dealing with Kenji's cooking.

They are an adorable couple, and Katya feels a bit guilty over the jealously she feels.

"I wonder where that girl has run off to..." she murmurs to herself, slipping into the room, unaware that she is being watched.

-

Stalinka heard the footsteps as she was half way through Mrs. Mackintosh's glorious slice of... something really good. It was too late to hide the evidence of her not-crime, and even later still to hide herself very well. And so she now hid next to the door as it swung open, waiting to see who it was that also dared to raid the dining hall at this hour.
>>
>>31509132

Seeing Katya Litvyak enter the room fills Konstantina with a certain amount of envy. For one, she has had almost constant contact with the Bishop since her defection. For another, she has heard other witches describe Litvyak's appearance in very favorable terms.

And then there is this whole "rescue romance" thing, which sounds like the stupidest thing in the world to Konstantina. The idea of being rescued by the one you love just seems... wrong. It would imply that she ever needed rescuing in the first place.

She watches Katya from the shadows as the woman gracefully makes her way over to the half eaten cake, taking another look around.

"She will be back soon for this... no one would leave it unfinished."

Katya works were way over to the fridge, and Konstantina sighs with relief. Her food was not in danger.

Katya is humming to herself, a familiar tune. Many of the witches of the barracks back home sing it during their morning exercises, particularly some the tank witches.

Her jealousy intensifies; Konstantina can't sing.

Working to stay out of sight, she approaches Litvyak, ducking behind a seat as the witch spins away from the fridge, carrying two small plates, one with more cheesecake, the other with some of the Oreo cookies she has recently been introduced to. Katya sets the plates down next to Konstantina's, then sprints off to pour herself a glass of milk.

With the traitor's back turned, Konstantina crawls quickly and quietly under the table... only to realize as Katya returns that she is definitely trapped until she decides to leave.

She frowns, lamenting the unreachable cheesecake on the table above her.

HNNNNNNNNGGGHHH
>>
>>31509897

>>
>>31509897
Certain that Merlin would return from wherever she'd run off to, Katya settles into her seat, sighing happily as she takes the first bite out of her own slice of cheesecake. This was the best idea she'd come up with in weeks. Her feet feel warm, almost unnaturally so, the seat is soft and inviting, and now she's dipping an Oreo into milk, just like Merlin taught her.

Life is good, the day being forgotten with every bite of cake and consumed cookie.

-

Konstantina's stomach growls, loudly enough that she nearly sits up straight out of panic. She cannot be discovered here!

'B-but my cake...' she thinks sadly.

After she is certain that Katya is lost in the pleasures of food, she tries to slowly creep away from Katya, freezing when Litvyak unexpectedly kicks her legs out to reach the seats on the other side of the table. One leg is approximately an inch away from Konstantina's nose, and she feel an itch on her nose that she dares not to scratch.

And it is getting worse. She squints, and starts to pull herself back from the leg...only to freeze with horror as she realizes that Katya's other leg is right behind her head, and she now needs desperately to sneeze from all the dust kicked up under the table.

'I will not lose to this!'

Two seconds after thinking this, she loses, but manages to keep it to a small squeak. When she loses again several seconds after that, it is not so gentle or quiet.

-

One minute, Katya is reclining back, dreaming of a future filled with relaxation, peace, and more good food, preferably alongside of friends and Frank. Especially Frank.

Then she hears a squeak under the table, and part of her left calf feels much warmer than the rest of her leg.

"What on earth-"

A loud sneeze emanates from under the table, the calf feels warmer and moister. Katya screams with fright, pushing away from the table, her seat falling backwards towards the floor.

Konstantina crawls out from under the table.

"It seems I have been discovered."

They finish their snacks in awkward silence, blushing furiously for very different reasons. Konstantina refuses to accept that she failed in keeping her activities unnoticed. Katya is embarrassed that she screamed like a child, hoping that nobody else had heard her.

"So," Konstantina says after finishing her cake, gently dabbing away any remaining crumbs from her lips with a napkin.

"So..." Katya replies.

"We were never here together," Konstantina continues. "You were here, alone. I was in my quarters the entire time, studying tomorrow's lecture with Matron O'Hare, regarding the advanced aerial maneuvers of Bishop's Wyvern."

"Of course..." Katya grins slightly.

"I am serious, Litvyak!"

"I know you are."

"Then do you mock me?" Stalinka grows louder.

"Of course not, you just-" Katya pauses, making sure she thinks well about what to say next. "It is of no consequence that you were caught eating a midnight snack."

"I did not wish to be caught!" Konstantina wails. "I have been trying to be good, as I have been ordered-"

"How about I just... take your plate to the sink?" Katya offers, motioning for the other witch to lower her voice.

"That would be acceptable..."

-

Konstantina watches Katya as she takes the plates away, studying her every motion intently. Somehow, she manages to make washing dishes look graceful, and for the very first time in her life, Konstantina worries about the fact that she possibly is not as skilled as someone else at something. This must be why the Sharks described Katya as 'wife material'.

Her chest hurts the more she thinks about this, and the ache only gets worse the more she thinks about how Katya Litvyak has spent almost the entire war at the side of Frank Bishop.

"I assure you that you have behaved quite well," Katya says as she returns from the sink. She looks worried suddenly when she notices Konstantina's pained expression. "Are you well?"

"Could you... tell me what the Bishop is like?"
>>
>>31511054
Katya seems to sink slightly in her chair as she considers the question.

"What do you wish to know?"

"Everything!" Konstantina exclaims. "Obviously I have fought him, and you have-" a growl enters the super-witch's voice "-flown with him more than I ever have. I am curious!"

Katya sighs, slapping her forehead as she looks to the roof of the dining room.

"He obviously does not know the effect he has on women."

"An act!" Konstantina declares, as though it were obvious. "He notices my attentions."

"You have been shooting at him."

"He has been avoiding them, as I have always known that he would." The depression that Konstantina had been experiencing seemed to be forgotten, and that relieved Katya.

"He's a good pilot... and a good man. Clueless as he might be to the affections of those around him, I feel blessed that he was the one who rescued me-"

"So you love him as well," Konstantina observed. She is about to continue speaking when she suddenly sits up straight in her chair, eyes wide.

"Konstan-"

"Someone is coming!" In a panic, Konstantina reaches over the table, grabs Katya by an arm, pulls her over the table, and dives under it with her.

"This is unnece-"

"Shhhhhhhhh!!!"

>>
>>31511309
With Katya muffled by a hand placed firmly over her mouth, Konstantina watches the door, wondering who the next interloper could be. After a moment, she moved her hand, and Katya gasps for air.

"Konstantina, you are overreacting!" she whispers harshly.

"I-" realization strikes her. "I am sorry, I just- Quiet!" She places her hand back on an exasperated looking Katya's mouth, but she thankfully does not struggle.

The door opens, and in walks Georgette Mackintosh. Konstantina's hand falls away from Katya's mouth, and both witches can only stare as the elder woman almost prances over to the refrigerator to cut herself a slice of cake, and start eating it on the spot.

The 'spectacle' continues for several minutes, and both girls are so taken by the sight of the stately Georgette in her nightgown, openly snacking away, that they don't notice the next visitor enter the room.

They do realize someone else is in the room when he approaches Georgette from behind. Konstantina almost shouts an alarm, and it is Katya's turn to stuff a hand over her mouth to try and silence her.

The hand falls away when the man suddenly hugs Georgette from behind. She does not act surprised, relaxing into the hug and looking up and her husband with a smile.

"You were sleeping when I left."

"Bed got cold without you." Nicholas returns her smile, and he kisses her on the cheek. She turns around to face him, wrapping her own arms around him.

"Sorry..."

"You shouldn't be snackin' so late, young lady."

"I can't help myself, you know that." The older couple giggle to themselves, leaning against the kitchen counter.

If their hearing wasn't diminished with age, they might have heard the pop of Konstantina's familiar manifesting by itself. She blushed so hard that she would have been glowing even without the magic.

The Mackintosh's didn't seem to notice, lost in their own private moment.

"How about we scoot back to bed?" Nicholas says quietly. "You've got an early start, don't you? Cookin' meals for everyone these days, it seems..."

"Non," Georgette says, almost childishly. She pushes her husband towards the center of the dining room, closer towards the table hiding Katya and Konstantina. "We have not danced in so long, Nicholas."

"A whole week, I think."

"So very long," Georgette insists with a smile. They both laugh at this private joke.

As the couple draw closer, Katya and Konstantina pull each other further under the table, hoping they are not seen. Katya is almost on top of Konstantina, hoping to hide the glow of her magic.

Their dance is a slow, uncomplicated, yet graceful circle around the room. They hold tightly onto each other, Georgette's eyes glistening in the low light of the dining room as she looks into Nick's, and he into hers.

He hums something that Konstantina has never heard before, a hunting, progressing melody. She will learn, twelve hours later, that the song is called Unchained Melody. She will pull Katya aside and demand to know everything about this song. Who composed it, who sang it, when it was sung. She will demand to know how she can get a CD of it to listen to. She will also awkwardly ask Katya if she knows how to dance like the Mackintosh's did... for reasons.

Tears pour from her eyes as she begins to weep in silence, clenching her teeth, and hoping she is not heard, hoping to not disturb the moment she is witnessing. Angrily, she believes she is being weak, not noticing that Katya is crying as well.

She has never seen anything like this. Her whole life has been spent preparing for a war her countrymen have started to lose. Things like this have been explained to her as being unnecessary, unwanted distractions.

Konstantina manages to stay silent until Georgette and Nicholas both leave for their room.

"S-so that's wh-what it looks like," she sobs.

"That is what it looks like," Katya says quietly.
