Ok, sorry for the late start- SNAFU with the OP, had to retype it, haha. oh well, shit happens, right?

Archive here:

and I actually lost the pastebin link, so if someone has that, it'd be nice.

And that's it for news. haha.

In a way, you're almost sad to be leaving the castle.

It's not empty- not by a long margin, with the majority of the visiting matrons still present, and the small academy's students once again allowed into most of the spaces previously occupied by the conclave or convent or whatever the hell it's called- you're not sure. You're relatively sure Ice told you at some point, but it hardly mattered.

Matron Litvyak greeted the four of you one the pad outside- favoring you with a smile and asking her daughter how she liked Paris. Natalya and Konstantina, however, weren't so lucky- apparently, the Parisian witches weren't too thrilled at their unannounced, uninvited presence. You spoke up for them, pointing out you and Katya both would likely be dead or worse had they not been there. It might have done something to mitigate the offense, but you're not sure, and haven't seen them since to ask.

Merlin greeted you as well- and pointed out your gear and personal kit, what had been left, had been moved down to the hangar. Her workshop is gone, along with her 'super' strikers, with Ice and Slider flying the pair over to Wattisham to be loaded up onto C-141s about the same time Katya and you were dress shopping in Paris. The squadron's rooms have already been closed up, too, with the three of you remaining moving down to decidedly temporary arrangements down near the hangar- in the empty room that used to hold Merlin's workshop.

>>
All in all, you expect to spend less than 24 hours at the castle. You woke up early enough to get in a shower- the bath full of witches, from the sound of it, the academy girls, at that- and put on a clean, almost new tan flight suit- your older OD green ones having been packed out with the squadron- You caught breakfast just at the tail end. Seems with everyone leaving, Georgette's stopped cooking her huge meals, leaving you to fend for yourself. It's honestly not so bad- you cooked enough extra that Merlin and Katya can heat themselves up a meal if they want it, and you've had time to get a few cups of coffee and check your flight plan- you don't actually go wheels up until later in the evening, with the intent of joining a Luftwaffe group headed to the same base.

The ordinance crews have already started loading the wyvern for the flight, 'defensive' armament required for even transit flights behind the lines, like this one. You snort when you think of it- with Merlin's extradimensional bays, your wyvern can carry about four times the payload, and even lifting all of it is a cinch- apparently, shit stuffed in extradimensional pockets doesn't weigh anything, so you're a good couple thousand pounds lighter this way. The kid really is something else, you think.

2/3
>>
Normally, that'd leave you a free day, but around noon, you have one last social obligation to keep- Georgette and Mack's anniversary. It shouldn't be too bad, you figure- they're having it in the grand ballroom, such as it is, in the castle here, and you'll be leaving straight from it to the hangar, and meeting up with the German flight near Berlin somewhere.

Still, you've got a few hours to spare before you need to head down to the anniversary, and since you're up, and well-rested for a change, full, and clean, you're kind of at a loss what to do. You can't afford to get dirty, without a change of clothes, but sitting still just doesn't seem to appeal to you. Shades of Jess, you suppose.

[] Head down to the hangar, see if we can help load the Wyvern up.

[x] Ya know, let's go hit up the castle Library, might as well read something.

You make for the lounge initially- might as well soak in some TV, see if there's anything interesting in the news, but the noises coming from in there tell you it's occupied- sounds like a rerun of that series about Charlotte Yeager, though you didn't watch it enough to be sure. It was one of Jess' favorite shows as a kid, might still be. Briefly, you wonder if it airs in Japan. Probably.

The Castle Library is your next stop, and it, thankfully, is pretty empty- a pair of students doing early morning homework, you guess, a pile of books on their table and several open ones scattered around. They don't seem to notice you as you wander the shelves. Predictably, most of the stuff here is about or by witches, with only a few 'mundane' books you recognize. The collection here is nowhere near as good as the holds on the continent or in Asia, you're told, but that's down to age- while Barin is apparently built on top of an old Roman fort, not much survived the dark ages, and most of the collection here was moved to the major hold in London on the orders of some queen or other. At least, so you gathered.

Still, there's a couple interesting looking books- a few on Rome, a couple on the Greeks, including the Spartans- you remember the battered breastplate at the louvre, looking at the book- some about asian witches and the difference between their ways of doing things and the european traditions, and one small book you almost looked over entitled 'swamp magic, an inside look at America's secret covens'. The last, to be honest, looks like a sensationalist piece of garbage, but even those have value, you've found. Mostly as entertainment.

You don't have enough time to read them all, of course, and while you'd like to take a few with you- history is always interesting, and the holds tend to have a unique perspective on things- you know you can't, and that you've only really got time to look into one book with any kind of depth.

[x] What the deuce. Let's check out the swamp magic book, ougghta be good for a larf.

Chuckling silently to yourself, you pull the swamp magic book out of it's spot and head for one of the chairs set around the large room- one off in an isolated corner.

The book- purportedly written by one Lizette Westbrook- no way to tell if that's a pen name or not- details the 'secret practices, hidden rituals, and ancient lore' of America's 'secret' covens- the southern Louisianan coven that grew up around the bayous and the peculiar American voodoo practices in New Orleans, the Native American covens, though there's no specific people listed there, the 'mountain' covens, in both the Rockies and the Appalachian ranges, and 'the confederacy's hidden legacy' in the south, which you assume has something to do with the remnants of confederate covens.

The majority of the book focuses, though, on the Bayou coven- going so far as to call them America's strongest, witch-for-witch, and possibly one of the best in the world when it comes to magic. That said, there's honestly not a lot of hard data, you notice- little bits here and there, like the requirement for the matrons of the coven- never more than two or three in number, to include a male 'root doctor'- voodoo magician and traditional healers among their number, who, at least, according to the book, holds power equal to the matrons with regards to decision making within the coven. He's also kind of the 'father' to the witches, available for council at all times, and required to give his blessing to- and attend- every wedding in the coven, among other things. Apparently, he's pretty popular as a godfather in the region, as well.

You kind of pity the guy, feeling you know his situation pretty well personally.

>>
According to the book, the witches seldom number more than twenty or thirty all told, and frequently much less than that- a marked difference from, say, the American northeast coven, which can number into the hundreds, depending on how it's counted. The rest of the section is sensationalist trash, though- Claims the witches of the swamps and bayous of Louisiana have integrated voodoo mythology and practices seamlessly with magic, with a noticeable effect on their talents.

The native American witches the book doesn't cover anywhere near in depth- it notes that a disproportionately high number of them, something like three quarters, end up as special forces witches in the military, and a high number of those have been heavily decorated in action, but it only barely scratches the surface of their organization, especially compared to the Bayou coven, though it does explain that each people tend to have their own system, and it's a loose confederacy, at best, usually with each tribe's oldest witch standing in as matron when and if the coven ever meets as a whole.

The mountain covens are tied in with the confederate coven in the southern part of the Appalachian range, with the author going so far as to state that some of them, especially the Georgian witches, track an unbroken line through the civil war, and maintain the same traditions, with the added benefit of the tight-knit nature of the confederate coven allowing them to persist as a major power bloc within American witch politics.

2/3
>>
No effort to unite the American covens can succeed without their tacit approval- and they apparently still hold a grudge in enough places to render the notion silly, at least, in the author's mind. Still, politics aside, the author does go into some depth about their abnormally high numbers witches, and the relative homogeneity of talents within the coven- most witches in a given area will share talents, with a large number of heal witches, for example, present in northern Georgia, a fact that's brought a lot of money into the region in more recent years.

You're about to get to the last section, the one dealing with the confederate coven and why it's still such a big deal, a hundred and twenty five years on, when you're interrupted by Katya, dressed in one of her more 'subdued' selections from Paris- a plain-looking sky blue dress. She's joined by Merlin, clad in her flight suit- such as it is, your RIO usually going bareleg these days- a second later.

“Hi F-frank!” Merlin beams- she greeted you with one of her hugs when you'd landed, but was happy to listen and not say much while you and Katya shared stories of Paris with her.

“Heya kiddo.” You respond, closing the book- it wasn't bad, though you really strongly doubt there's much hard research in it- “What's going on?”

She shakes her head. “N-nothing. Katya and I j-just wondered where you were. Y-you ready to go down t-to miss Georgette's party?”

You check your watch, there's still a little time, though if you get there early, you can probably pick a better seat.

An Irish Airman Foresees His Death

I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.

I found this when I was looking around. I feel that someone will sing/quote this to Frank before a big hope like some ominous omen that something bad is going to happen.

Looking into them deeper though shows how innocent they really are to things around them. Would be nice to see them when all the brainwashing's gone, but that's just me.

[x] Yeah, let's go

You nod. “Yeah, I gotta go put this back first, then we can go.”

Katya laughs. “You can also leave it for the students, you know. They will have to clean the library anyway.”

You shrug. “No sense in making work for someone when it'd be easier for me to do it.” It only takes you a minute to put the book back and tip the others near it back upright. As much as you'd like to borrow some of the others- the witches of Rome and Caesar's Witches, for example, both look good- you doubt there's much chance of that. At least you thought to snag some reading material when you were in Paris.

“So how was your week?” You ask Merlin on the way down.

“I-it wasn't bad.” She says. “K-kenji and I h-helped pack up t-the shop, but m-mister Perry said t-they'd have a b-better one for me in T-texas if I ever wanted to visit.”

You nod- it's like you said, it's all recruiting. “Surprised he's the only one that said anything.” You say.

Merlin shrugs. “H-he wasn't, they all said t-things like that. Tabitha a-and Rachel are using t-the new strikers w-we built, we got t-the powered feeds f-for their guns done in t-time.”

“So Ice still has her M-14, huh?” You ask, and she nods.

1/2
>>
“Y-yeah, and Rachel s-still has her shotguns. T-they were harder to w-work with but we got it.” She says, then frowns. “B-but they both say they h-hard to fly and get u-used to. Tabitha was r-really sick for a few d-days.”

Katya nods. “Cannot be helped, little Merlin.” She says. “They are incredible units, they must be difficult to operate.”

Merlin shakes her head viciously. “N-no! T-that's the problem, t-they shouldn't b-be. W-we designed t-them to u-use a lot l-less power t-than other units!” She looks frustrated. “T-they should b-be so easy t-that I can a-almost do it.”

Katya shoots you a glance as you open the doors to the grand ballroom- 'grand' in the sense that it's the biggest hall in the building. It's not packed, but there's enough chairs here to indicate they're expecting a few people.

Merlin, still clearly upset, follows you into the room. “I-I just don't u-understand it.” She says. “T-they should b-be so e-easy almost a-anyone can u-use them.”

[x] Merlin, they're prototypes, there's bound to be bugs. They're amazing either way.

“Merlin,” You say gently, putting a hand on her shoulder and guiding her into one of the back rows of chairs, with Katya following you, “They're prototypes, there's bound to be bugs. They're amazing either way.”

“B-but what else i-is flawed?” She asks. “D-did we m-make a m-mistake? W-where? W-what if I-I didn't get t-the math right o-on the weapons b-bay?” She looks up at you, panicked. “F-frank! We have to r-remove it! I-if it bugs i-in flight!”

“We'll handle it then.” You say. “We can always jettison weapons.”

She shakes her head again. “B-but what if-”

“Merlin.” You say, a touch more forcefully than you usually do when addressing her. “It will be absolutely fine, I'm sure of it.”

She gets quiet, but nods. Not that she seems convinced, but she nods. You'll class it as a win.

You're looking around when you notice something. Besides the witches, and what you assume are family members, given their relative ages, there's the press. More than enough to make this a problem. Thankfully, they haven't noticed you, yet, but it's a matter of time.

1/2
>>
A short matter of time. There's not much to the anniversary- just a priest saying a few short words, really- then the press is up, taking pictures, talking to the couple. You'd wonder about it, had you not known them. During the last war, it seems, the wedding was taken as a propaganda thing, and that's kind of been brought forward again, with the current war- especially given that the French are absolutely vital to it, their ports and railways providing the necessary logistics links from America to the front.

You can't leave without saying something to Georgette and Mr. Mackintosh, though- thankfully, after a while, the press looses interest in them and you're able to talk to them.

“Frank, Samantha!” Georgette says- you wince internally, knowing someone heard that. “You did make it! We weren't sure if you'd be able to.”

I just did, Please some feedback this was inspired by a saying Slider said about mixed units a while back.
The Witch Flies Alone

A Witch with her head up high,
Flying with her brothers as they soar in the sky,
Steel Wings they carry them through,
How they work she never knew.

Nevertheless she didn’t care,
As long as they stuck together as a pair,
Though sometimes she flies right passed,
Always laughing at them since she’s very fast.

When time for fun and games were done,
She takes to the skies with her gun,
With her upfront as an angel from up above,
As they in turn protect her with brotherly love.

They made their gains they their shots,
Their flight in motion as if it were a waltz,
Then something from down below,
Caused her brothers to burn with a glow.

One by one they all fall down,
As their steel wings go without a sound,
She looks in horror then screams and shouts,
“To run away you stupid louts!”

At first she thought they were slow,
Then she saw that is was not so,
They fly together to form a shield,
So she can fight while concealed.

So she shot and fought down to the last shell.
She cried and shouted like she was in hell.
Once the smoke finally cleared,
Only to find her brothers weren’t near.

She flew back home like a shoulder should,
But in her mind had felt like she misunderstood,
For she did not see the familiar sight of her brothers’ engines as they’ve flown,
Nor the sounds of chatter or laughter not even a groan.

Then it has hit her with a heavy blow,
Was she ever this slow?
The bitter realization that made itself known,
That this witch now flies alone.

[x] Wouldn't have missed it if the mission to Moscow was tomorrow, Miss Mackintosh.

You smile, arresting a salute to Nicholas when he frowns at you. “Wouldn't have missed it if the mission to hit Moscow was tomorrow, Miss Mackintosh.” You say. She smiles and pats you on the cheek.

“That's sweet, Frank, but we'd have understood. We know what duty is, afterall.” She says. “Will you be staying long?”

You shake your head. “Can't, actually. We're due to link up with some of the other guys headed to the same base as us in a couple of hours, so we can't stay too long.”

She nods. “Well, we're glad you were able to join us, even just for a minute.” She says, then looks past your shoulder a bit, and leans in. “I hear you were evacuated from Paris?”

You return the nod. “No damage to the city, just a bit of excitement for us.” You say, then indicated Katya. “She got to keep all her fancy dresses.”

Katya laughs. “Even if all of them are needing cleaned now.” She says. “But it is nothing, I do not think I will be wearing them much for a while.”

Georgette smiles. “No, I don't think so either. Still, it's good you were able to keep them.” Katya nods.

“Excuse me,” another voice buts into the conversation- politely, to be sure, but still. You turn to find the outstretched hand of a reporter- the press badge displayed proudly on his vest, which has like, eighty pockets. You cautiously return the handshake. “Name's Ben Valentine, with the associated press. You're lieutenant commander Bishop, right? I was wondering if you'd answer a few questions.” He says it quietly enough that no one else, save the immediate group here, hears it, so at least there's that.

[] Well, actually, mister Valentine, we have to leave. We were just saying goodbye to Miss Mackintosh here.

You nod, noting that Katya and Merlin have gotten some distance- which is good, to be honest, you're not too up on the thought of reporters talking to either of them, for various reasons. More Merlin than Katya, to be honest. “A few, but I can't talk long, and you understand I can't talk too much, right?”

He nods, pulling a notebook and a pen from one of the pockets of his vest. “I've worked with the military before.” He says, still quiet. “If you can't answer, just tell me, ok?”

You nod.

“Ok, first, there's a lot of rumors going around about what's been going on here, care to shed any light on it?” He asks.

>"Well..." she hesitates before continuing, "Are you not still a Guardian of Witches?"

>"It's one of my many titles."

>"Then please, guard this witch." She takes another drink from her glass and hands it back. Bloody Hell. I pour her another and hand it back.

>"You've got to tell me more, though. I might be good, but I'm no Gnome, despite the rumors." A lie, and I know it.

>She narrows her eyes. "I know for a fact you are, Mister Bishop. I have it on very, very good authority that you are..."

>"Who's authority?"

“Not able to detach you?” He asks.

You shrug. “Old rules about pilots in mixed units.” You say, and he nods again, making another note.

“I suppose I should have started out with this, but at Tanana, what made you do that?” He says.

You laugh. “No, but I guess I can understand why it looks that way. It was really just the way things turned out, I took leave around the same times as my squadronmates, and we went to the same places.”

He nods. “Ok, yeah. Hey, sorry about that, my editor wanted me to ask if I ran into you. So no truth to the rumors you're sleeping with any or all of them?”

“None at all, sorry. Guess that's not very interesting, huh?” You say with another laugh.

He shrugs. “Eh. I'm a reporter, not a tabloid columnist, ya know? I don't like digging into that sort of thing to begin with. As long as it's not hurting anybody, what a man does behind closed doors isn't news, ya know?”

You nod.

He's about to ask another question when Merlin tugs on your wrist. “H-hey frank? We need to go, w-we have to be in the air soon.”

You look down and nod. “Right kiddo. See ya in support. Hey, and stop by meteorology on the way down, will ya?” She nods.

“Your RIO?” Mister Valentine asks. You nod.

“Yeah. Best in the fleet. I'd have bought it without her by now.” You say. “Anyway, been nice talking with you, I gotta head out.”

He nods, shaking your hand again. “Stay safe, commander Bishop. I'll fax ya a copy of the article if it gets published.”

“Thanks. Take it easy.” You say, heading out of the room- managing to dodge any further reporters by explaining you've got to go, and really don't have the time to be talking. None of them try to follow you into the castle, one persistent individual being stopped by the hard gauze of one of the witch 'minders' at the door.

You meet Merlin in life support- she was taking her time. “K-katya is changing.” She says, and you nod.

“Anxious, kiddo?” You ask, detecting it in her voice. She nods.

“A-a little. P-patty says it's like being i-in a storm's way, a-a bad one. Y-you know something's coming, b-but don't know when it will hit, o-or how bad it'll be.” She says, then looks over at you. “B-but I'm not s-so worried.”

“Why not?” You ask, surprised.

She smiles. “B-because working together, w-we can dodge rain.”

It's cheesy as hell, but it's worth it for the look on the kid's face. Merlin rarely smiles like that anymore.

This isn't entirely implausible if all of the witches are involved in a Birgitte-lead Louisiana Voodoo inspired "recharging" ceremony.

If Birgitte's Coven is influenced by this Voodoo, then it wouldn't be a far-fetched guess to think that the "recharging" would involve a Loa-summoning ceremony where Frank is influenced by one of the Ghede loa, who are "oud, rude (although rarely to the point of real insult), sexual, and usually a lot of fun.".

If I recall correctly, those who are 'ridden' by the Loa don't recall the events that transpire during that time.

Best part about this is that these Ghede loa "have nothing to fear, and frequently will display how far past consequence and feeling they are when they come through in a service".

The Loa are so past giving a fuck that they just party it up.

Imagine it, Frank gets recharged and is 'possessed' by the Loa Baron La Croix, the spirit of death and sexuality...

>Frank's suffering body lay between them all. >All the witches involved hold hands in some ritual that Birgitte has told them of.
>They all chant while Birgitte leads, invoking some Voodoo Magic and making the sign of the cross.
>The ritual is almost complete, and they all lay their hands on Frank to pour all their magic into him.
>Birgitte smiles coyly underneath her ceremonial mask as "Frank's" eyes open up, faintly glowing purple....
