It is the dawn of the maritime golden age. Ships of all nations cross the seas of the world. From the powerful Imperial navy to the south and its domination of the Great Inland Ocean. To the varied and constantly feuding Merchant City States to the west, their cargo reaching every realm under the stars as their mercenary armies strive to steal power from one another and establish hegemony over trade. To the tribals in the far flung northern continent, and the riches that their virgin lands offer to the wider world. The seas offer boundless opportunity and wealth to those who dare to take the chance.

That's where you come in, there are merchants and trade posts a plenty among those seeking their fortune. And you seek to take it from them. You will become the grandest pirate the world has ever seen and carve your empire of brigands and thieves out of the noble men who stand in your way.

But as it stands now, you have recently arrived in Caelos, a merchant city state famous for its wine, women, and ship building. It is here that you will find your first ship, and with luck begin the makings of establishing a crew.
>>
But first a number of things must be established. From where do you hail?
>A simple fishing village on the outskirts of the Glorious Empire. The village was small but prosperous, selling fish to travelling merchant in exchange for luxury goods and foodstuffs. However, the village was on the very outskirts of Imperial rule and there are little jobs to offer other than fisherman. And with your elder brother set to inherit your father’s no name industry, you set out to find your own wealth and glory.
>Your father was a disgraced noble, a duke and army commander from an eastern man kingdom. However, his title and lands were stripped after his poor judgement lost the kingdom one of the most influential battles of the war. His disgrace sent him west as an exile where he took up work as a mercenary for whoever payed the most. Eventually he met your mother, and you were born. Long since has your family settled down and accepted their new lot in life.
>Your mother was a dreaded pirate lord. Famous for her brutality and cunning, she trained you and your siblings to one day take up her empire and divide her ships. Each of you fathered by a different man. However, mutiny and treachery from her lieutenants saw her head removed and her fleet divided. You have not seen your brothers and sisters since that fateful night, each of you having fled your separate ways.

Your mother was the dread pirate lord Balere de Costa. Famous for prowling the Western Sea for merchant ships and burning down the homes of those who dare opposed her. Infamous and ruthless, and with a lust unquenchable, she answered to no man and no king, bringing her the ire of every government west of the Frozen Mountains. It was known for her to take a lover in every port, and to even occasionally assault merchants in those ports from the in land city. She was nothing if not thorough in making sure she offended everyone. Unfortunately, it was her greed and arrogance that got the best of her. Known for never losing an open battle, your mother thought herself invincible. And paid the price at those whom she thought were loyal.

Following her death you and your siblings were split. The oldest were killed along with her, while the youngest were taken by those still loyal. You amongst the middle of her children, made your own way to safety. Fleeing the port town and working as whatever job you came across all over the continent. However, you have long since desired to return to the seas and put your mother’s teachings into practice. And now as you wave goodbye to the trade caravan with whom you have travelled you enter the grand city of Caelos, the beginning of your new fortune.

You are Santiago de Costa, fourth son of the Black Maiden, fathered by some unknown sailor in the service of the Kingdom of the Gaels. And you will make your fortune.

Ahoy, Blackbeard! This looks like fun!
>>
You decide that your best course of action is to wander around town first. Get acquainted with the city and to see if you can find out any information about work or the city in general. You throw your rucksack over your shoulder as you head off into the town centre. The heart of the city is bustling, people of very race and creed weaving and moving from store to store, the shouts of merchants ringing out over the noise, and the ever present watch of the town guardsman painting the scene. The smell of the city is thicker here, as you are assaulted by the competing scents of goods of all kinds. The heat of that many people combined with the burning summer sun also pricks against your skin. People brush against you and push past you as you get closer and closer to the more active sections of the city. Deciding that this is definitely the place to be you get ready to work.

A tall black man stands behind a cart stoically, his arms folded and his leer that which could kill. He talks slowly and disinterestedly to his customers as they examined his goods. Maps and weapons mainly, some kind of adventurer stall?

A short and fat man booms his voice over the crowd, advertising everything and anything. From goods to work, to audiences with the city council and information. He claims he can sell whatever the buyer desires.

Then there’s the employment office. Tucked away into a little back alley, and with quite a line. It appears that if you were truly in need of work you could go there.

Of course there are dozens upon dozens of people, all of them interesting looking. Any of them could provide you with whatever you wanted to know.

Your mother taught you how to command a ship and basic logistics such as what to take on board. She also taught you how to fight, mainly with knives and flintlock pistols. Her advice being to "kill them before they can kill you" and "there's no such thing as honor" Unfortunately, guns are expensive and a rarity in land which is where you've been primarily. You're also very good in fist fights and brawls, primarily of the drunken nature. Of course you spent a lot of your childhood on ships so you're pretty adept at moving on a ship and can make one run and work effectively.

Black merchant
>>
You approach the black merchant as he finishes with his latest customer, the woman leaving and disappearing into the crowd. He raises an eyebrow in acknowledgement as you approach.

“Lo, what do you need?” His accent is thick with that of the tribal nations of the north but other than that it appears more than adept in the merchant tongue.

“Information, mainly, maybe some goods,” You respond.

“I do not deal in information, if you wish to purchase it go elsewhere. As for goods, what do you wish for?” He responds, his monotone not changing.

“Are you telling me that a merchant with this assortment of goods doesn’t know the goings on of the adventurers and sailors of the city?” You respond.

The man snorts, “I do, but I do not sell it.”

“Could you spare it then?” You ask.

“I will give you this, boy, if you want work the taverns are always hiring. If you want work on a boat, a small ship recently moved in. Looking for crew, captain of it is a hard one though. Now do you intend to buy something?” He answers, his tone not wavering once.

“What do you have in the way of weapons?” You ask him.

“I have weapons from all over. Flintlock rifles and pistols produced here and elsewhere, swords and rapiers from those from all
over who have sold or pawned them and not hence returned. For you? That’s for you to decide.”

“And other than weapons?” You inquire further.

“I have maps of the region, maps of other regions, maps of the sea, and other maps. I sell maps and weapons, diversity results in poor product, and lack of it.”

“I have a few question about your weaponry. But I’m also curious about you, how did you come to Caelos?” You ask him.

He snorts, “Always the same question isn’t it? I was a warrior within my tribe a mere eight years ago. I was captured by some slavers to sell on the north of this continent, probably to Umbrians or the like. But we revolted, us northmen and a couple of captured pirates and merchants. We killed the crew, took the ship, and became true pirates for a bit. Then we tried making a deal with some of the Black Maiden’s ex-men, deal went south and most of us were killed. I went legitimate after that. Served as a bodyguard for an inland merchant before moving out here with my wealth for this safer job. It’s a nice city. Now then, my story is complete. Purchase something or be gone.”

“What do you have in the way of daggers?” You ask.

The man unfolds his arms before picking up three daggers, all of them steel. A stiletto, a dirk, and a parrying dagger.

“I have these,” he responds curtly, “If you’re thinking of actually fighting with it I’d recommend the dirk. Stiletto is a solid weapon, but not good for one on one combat. Of course you could always purchase the parrying dagger and a sword to go with it.”

“And pistols?” You ask him.

“I have a few, all the same make,” He says as he puts down the daggers and reaches down for a pistol from within his cart. It’s flintlock and has wood finishes, it’s by no means a spectacular weapon, completely ordinary, and it looks a little worse for wear.

“How much for each item?” You ask him.

“I can give you each of the daggers for a silver piece, the pistol will cost you two silver and 6 copper. I can also sell you a cutless or rapier if you want, they’ll go for two silver each,” He answers as he places the pistol in front of him.

“I’ll take a dirk,” You tell him.

The man nods as he picks up the weapon and hands it to you. In exchange you draw out your coin purse from within your pocket and from it hand him a single silver piece.

“I thank you for your business, friend. Alakala beel geli,” He nods as he takes your coin, ending the transaction with something in his tribal language.

“And thanks to you,” You smile as you turn away. Replacing your old knife with your new dirk in your belt’s hilt.

As you leave the merchant to serve his next customer, you think of where to go next. Should you continue to look around for information and work in the plaza, or maybe chase up one of those leads for work at the nearby tavern or down at the dock where that man is supposedly hiring crew. As you wander away back into the crowd, your thinking is cut off.

“Stop! Thief!” You hear a voice shriek out, your dart around and loo. Standing there is the fat merchant, his finger pointing accusingly at a figure darting away through one of the back alleys.

Let the merchant deal with his own problems, you shrug and turn away. Drowning out with his angry yells with your thoughts. You figure the most important thing you can do at this moment is to head to the tavern. You push your way through the crowd without a second glance behind you, many of them looking at the commotion, however most seem to not care. It appears thievery is a regular part of life in Caelos.

You walk down one of the main streets towards the tavern, supposedly it’s right in the heart of the city. One of the bigger establishments, and a prosperous one to boot. It’s as you’re thinking that you realise you never bothered asking for the name of the place. Oh well, how hard can it be to miss it. If it’s a successful tavern in a city like this it’ll, be loud and reek of booze even from the outside. After a few minutes of walking, and glaring at street urchins who seem to want to try their luck with your pocket you reach a large building. Old looking, and with a series of new additions a large sign hangs from the roof. The Virgin’s Quarrel.

The sound of merry making can be heard from outside the front door, and you’re sure you can smell roast pork and cheap ale from one of the open windows. Deciding that this is probably the place, you enter. The first thing you see once you enter is a series of drunken sailors in the corner singing a raunchy sea ballad in the heart of the tavern. A serving woman keeps topping up their mugs with more ale and cheap wine, at the same time as fending off their grabbing hands. You grin, this is your kind of place.

Behind the counter is a bored looking old woman, her eyes creased into a stern glare as she looks around the tavern. At the same time she pours drinks into the mugs and cups of the patrons at the bar, and gives ones to the serving girls to take to the tables. The tavern is near full, and it is loud, very loud.

You look around the tavern to see if you can spy any particularly interesting people, and you immediately spot one. Sitting at the bar drowning himself in booze, is an older gentleman decked out in fine silks. The look of a wealthy man planted all over his clothing. Next to him sits a very bored looking man, his face an odd colour and with strange eyes. An eastern man? In one of the corners a couple are talking in hushed voices. Both of them dressed in travelling clothes, and looking near identical except for their genders. A man and a woman with red hair and freckles.

There are a lot of opportunities here for you to try to gather information and the like, maybe see if there’s a way for you to get a ship under your control. You’re gonna have to talk to a lot of people of this. And why not start with the red heads at the back? Readjusting your rucksack on your shoulder you wander over to the muttering pair. Pulling up a chair at the table next to them and acting interested in your new dagger. It is a nice looking blade, not ornate, but well built. But that’s beside the point, the conversation is the interesting thing
“I’m tellin’ ya, Llewellyn,” The woman says in a hushed voice, “we gotta get outta here. Get onna ship.”
“I know tha’,” The man replies, “Bu’ who in their right mind would hire us?”
“Nobody’s gonna know we’re bandits,” The woman responds, “And we can’t stay here.”
Interesting, a pair of bandits on the run. You think to yourself how this could be useful. You could always try to get them to be a part of your crew, you’d probably be able to get them cheap if they’re desperate to get away, but you’d need a boat for that. That was always going to be the hard part.
What do?
>Interject in the conversation (write in what you say)

You decide that it’s better to keep listening, to what they have to say, before you interject. Quickly waving down a serving girl and asking for a mug of rum to waive suspicion you go back to eavesdropping.

“Look ‘ere, Gerry, I understand ya concern but I think we’ll be safe here. It’s a big city, right?” The man, apparently called Llewellyn speaks.

“I know tha’, but still, I’d prefer if we were on a boat we’re nobody could catch us, I would.”

“We ‘ave no idea how to crew a boat, and you expect us to be good an’ honest sailors now?”

“Shit, Llewellyn, not every sailor is good and honest,” She responds, her voice getting slightly louder.

“You wan’ us to be pirates then?” He asks in return.

That perks your ears up, a couple of people looking for employment as pirates.

“I don’t think pirates just hire in ports, sis,” The man hisses.

With that information in hand you stand up, quickly put your new dirk back into its hilt, and grab your rum. Pushing your chair back into the table and giving a quick once over of the room to make sure no one’s paying attention you walk over to where they’re holding their conversation. Almost immediately, they go dead silent and look straight at you. You turn and look at both of them, they’re definitely related alright. Practically look the exact same, the thought twists your insides a bit. You miss your siblings, how long has it been now? Five years? No time to think of that though, it’s time be charming.

You take a quick swig of your rum before placing it on the table and pulling up a chair to join them, “I’m sorry I couldn’t help but overhear. You’d be surprised at who’s doing what in cities like this. Hi, I’m Santiago de Costa.”

The man looks at you, “You overheard us?” His voice dripping venom.

“I did, and I just so happen to be in the need of a crew for somewhat illicit ship related activities,” You smile and take another drink.

“Do you have a boat?” The woman asks matter of factly.

“No,” You admit, “but I soon will.”

“So you expect us to follow a pirate without a ship?” The man asks you.

“Aye, I do, Llewellyn,” You respond, “Because getting the ship’s the easy part. Any number of ways we can do that, stealing in port, mutiny, purchasing one with stolen funds. It’s finding the crew that’s the hard part. And by the sound of it you don’t have many other places to go.”

The two siblings look at each other for a bit, deliberating on what you’ve said. A couple of bandits would be helpful to have, especially when it comes to the stealing a ship and killing those who get in your way bit. They look capable enough at killing people at least. The issue lies in their lack of experience on a ship, taking landlubbers for crew. You wonder how your mother would feel about that. Probably happy you’ve at least got a crew. She taught you how to manage one, and like hell you’re letting those skills go to waste. It’s just the question whether these two are worth it.

“Alright,” The woman turns to you, “We’ll work for you, don’t got much choice else. You still wan’ us?”

“Welcome aboard,” You clasp each of their hands in turn, “well welcome aboard when we get that ship.”

“And wha’ would your plan be there, cap’n?” Llewellyn asks.

You ponder it for a moment. You haven’t really thought about it and there are a number of different ways you could go about getting a vessel in your possession. You suppose now’s as good a time as ever to think one up. The dock will be where the ships are, so you’ll be going there for it, and you can’t really afford a ship. Not with the kind of money you have. You’ll have to get one through illegal means, your first act of piracy. The simplest way would to just go to the dock at night and commandeer a vessel, and just sail it out under the cover of the stars. You’d be at risk of the town guard though. Alternatively, you could try to join the crew of that one captain hiring and host a mutiny at sea. This would take longer and be far riskier, but ultimately you may be able to rile up some of his own crew. Of course, there are other options as well, but you’re struggling to think of them right now.

How do you plan to acquire your ship?

“That depends on how long you guys can stay in the city really,” You tell your two new shiphands.

Gerry answers for the both of them, “We would like to leave as early as possible. Bu’, we can probably stay low for a couple o’ days.”

“Fair enough, meet me at the dock tonight. At the far east side, try to get there as early as possible but don’t arouse suspicion. If I can gather enough hands we’ll steal a ship tonight and be done with it. If not, well we can arrange a plan while we’re there,” You respond, as you stand up.

“Righ’o, cap’n,” the brother nods as he too stands, “We’ll be keepin’ our ‘eads down fo’ a bi’. We’ll see ya tonight.”

You nod at the two red heads and watch them leave before turning back to the rest of the tavern, you still want to speak to some of the other patrons. In particular, the eastern man at the bar. You down the last of your mug of rum before approaching the bar and pulling up a seat next to him. You motion for the barkeep to pour you another drink before you start conversation.

“What brings you to Caelos, friend?” You ask him.

“The same thing that brings anyone anywhere,” He answers, not looking away from his own glass of wine, “Money and employment.”

“Money and employment bring you all the way from the eastern kingdoms?” You ask him.

“I do when I’m offering money and employment,” You tell him.

“Is that so?” He answers before taking another drink.

“Aye, it is,” You respond, “You wouldn’t happen to have any experience on a ship would you?”

The man looks at you solemnly, “I do. But that part of my life is behind me, I don’t want to go back out to sea.”

“And why would that be?” You ask him.

“When I came to the empire, there wasn’t much employment opportunity for eastmen. My uncle took a job as a dock worker on the Great Inland Ocean, didn’t do him any good and he got paid and treated like shit. So I decided that I’d do him one better, me and my cousin, we signed up for the Imperial Navy. Served under the purple flag of the Empire for the best part of five years before I got re-assigned to the Emperor’s Fist. Let’s just say the captain was… not pleasant. Long story short, my cousin’s dead, and I can’t return to the empire anytime soon.”

“What happened?” You ask him.

“That’s something I can’t tell you,” he answers, “Not unless I’ve had a few more of these. So no, I won’t be interested in this operation of your’s. I don’t work with people who benefit the Empire or their allies. Hence why I’m in the Merchant Republic that is currently embargoing goods from that shit stain of a country.”

The man turns to you and looks you up and down before turning to see if the bartender’s is still in ear shot, “Are you trying to get me to join a pirate crew?”

You nod in response.

“Well, shit, kid,” He sighs, “Not sure if I feel comfortable following some greenhorn captain into piracy. I mean I’m poor, but I’m not that poor.”

“Well, if you ever change your mind just ask for Santiago de Costa,” You tell to him before taking a drink.

“Wait,” He says, “De Costa? As in the Black Maiden? As in Balere de Costa?”

You nod, “She was my mother yes.”

“Fuck me,” he shakes his head, “The son of the black maiden is recruiting for a pirate crew and he wants me on it.” He sighs deeply, “Listen, kid, I know I may regret this entirely. But do you think you have half the ability your mother had?”

“She trained me, taught me what to do,” You reply.

The man rests his head against the table, “Fuck it, I’m broke, got nowhere else to go. I want one thing though, if I join your crew. You promise to make the Empire’s life hell, and if we ever come across Commodore Heinrich Gerden, I get to end that fucker’s life.”

The man looks at you for a second like you’re crazy before chuckling, “I’m Hassid Al-Kalal, pleasure to be serving under you I suppose. Where’s your ship.”

You pause for a moment mid sip before awkwardly lowering the mug, “Currently being minded by another individual…” You trail off.

Hassid sighs and slumps back, “You don’t have a ship yet do you?”

“Relax, friend, it’s a simple solution,” You lower your voice, “Meet me at the docks tonight and we’ll be taking it. There’ll be a couple of siblings there, both red head, on the far east side. They’re with me, tell them I sent you and we’ll get a fine ship and sail the seas soon.”

Hassid looks at you, looks up, then drains the last of his drink, “I need to get mentally prepared for this. I’ll see you tonight, Santiago.”

You watch as the man leaves, odd that your future crew seem to leave once you hire them. It is then that you turn around to see the barkeep looking at you, her cold glare appraising you.

“Aye, I be hiring crew,” You tell her before taking a cautious sip of your drink, “But my ship won’t be here for a while. The captain sent me ahead.”

“Is that so?” She asks, clearly unperplexed by your words, “What would the name of the ship be?”

You pause for a moment, “It escapes me at this moment, and I haven’t been aboard yet. He’s bringing the ship in tonight and getting me and the new lads to start sailing it then.”

“Lad, I know that this crew of your’s isn’t the legitimate type. And to be honest, that doesn’t really phase me. I’ve run this here tavern for thirty years, and the illegitimate types tend to be just as well behaved as those who don’t break the law. And they spend more,” She tells you, “But be less obvious about it. I don’t need this kind of trouble in my inn, boy.”

She looks terrifying, she’s an old crone but she’s by no means unfit. And the look in her eye is enough to put any sailor in his place. She’s an impressive woman alright, and you’d prefer not to be speaking to her for far too long.

“My apologies, madam,” You say slowly, “You wouldn’t happen to know where I can find a crew though do you?”

“What you want are a bunch of people desperate enough to work for a greenhorn like yourself, and poor enough to do it for cheap,” She tells you, “Check the slums on the east side of town. You’ll find some poor sods there who’ll work for nothing.”

“Thank you,” You tell her before you quickly taking a nervous drink.

“In case you didn’t realise that was me requesting that you go somewhere else to recruit, it’s near lunch time and the city guard do like a drink.”

“Thank you for that,” You smile at her as you stand up emptying your mug down your throat, “Is it possible I could get your name? So I can repay you some day.”

The woman just snorts, “Marianne D’Ellert, and you’re welcome, lad.”

You nod in response before quickly exiting the tavern, just in time to see a pair of guardsman laughing as they wander towards the building. As you cross paths with them you nod in acknowledgment and they give you a smile and nod in return. As you pass them you let out an audible sigh of relief, your journey isn’t over just yet, not before it’s begun. Right then, you’ll follow Marianne’s advice and head to the slums. Surely there’ll be plenty a desperate thief or beggar willing to serve on your crew.

It turns out the slums are a fair walk from the heart of the city, one has to cross in front of the docks and walk through the hustle and bustle of sailors. However, the walk was pleasant as you walked down the dock. Making a mental note of any decent ships you saw, unfortunately the turn off towards the community was made far earlier than you’d have hoped and you found yourself leaving the docks and going back into the inland part of the city. The slums were easy to find, tucked away out of sight from the inland trade routes, docks and heart of the city was a squatter’s paradise.

The slums themselves are crowded, the streets run down and beggars and urchins ever present. The worst bit was the smell, but that was easy to get used to after a while. There are a number of routes you could take though the slums each with different people, the way though seemed to escape you.

As you walk through the residential area within the slums you can see the eyes turning on you, most of their clothing is rags or less. Whilst your travelling garb is by no means extravagant, it is in one piece and you can see the people eying off your rucksack. You absentmindedly finger your dagger as you walk, keeping your eyes open on the people around you. People can’t be trusted, especially not in areas like these. But they will do whatever for coin and that’s what you need. Still you’re thankful that you placed your coins well within your bag and have your openly displayed moneybag filled with rocks, never hurts to be safe. Especially amongst pickpockets and street urchins.

As you get to one of the primary residential areas, you see a group of children playing, women who could be their mothers watching nearby and chatting as they wash clothes in filthy buckets of water. Men wander down the streets, eyes always open and looking around. Whilst old beggars sit by the side of the roads, their stench the worst. As you look at one you feel someone bump into you. And as you turn to look you see a teenage girl walking off in another direction.

As you see the girl walking away you instantly feel down to your dummy coin bag, finding it missing you can’t help but give a small chuckle. You can see the girl is trying to slip away from you but you definitely still have her in sight. Well, if the girl’s stealing she must be in need of some sort of money. And she was good enough to take your coin purse, just not good enough to get away. May as well follow her and see where she goes. Keeping her in your sights, you walk casually after her. Fortunately, the street is relatively uncrowded and following her is easy. As she ducks down into a back alley you stroll after her, readjusting your rucksack. No need to raise suspicion now is there. The girl moves through the alleys quickly, and you are forced to quicken your pace to keep up. However, you are skilled enough to keep her within your line of sight. Unfortunately, it also seems that she knows that you are following her. A shame that. No element of surprise there. She eventually turns right down one of the alleys and you follow her, closing the distance. Time to confront her.

Your timing could’ve been better, you admit. The girl runs up to an older boy, well young man, looks to be in his early twenties and a boy slightly younger than herself. She speaks to them quickly in the language of the city and points to you. That’s a shame, you can barely remember any of Caeli as a language, and most people in the city speak the merchant tongue so you didn’t see the need to study it after your mother died. Sighing you continue walking up to them. Instantly the two boys look at you and glare, the older drawing what looks like a butcher’s knife.

“Woah, woah, woah there,” You say to the kids as you raise your palms, “I no want trouble. Just want rock collection back.” You speak in Caeli as you point to your coin purse in the girl’s hands. “You kids speak the merchant tongue right?” You ask them in the common language.

The older boy looks at the girl who open the coin purse, your face instantly drops as a small girn appears on your’s. She empties the purse without ceremony onto the ground.

“What else do you want?” The older boy asks you with a sneer.

“Shit, why so angry?” You ask them, “Look here, kid, you’re good with your hands. A good thief, but a hungry one, no? What I’m offering is employment. For all of you, and no it’s not weird shit. I’m putting together a crew, and you fit the bill.”

“Not interested,” The boy spits.

“Sure you aren’t, but I’ll pay you and I need a good set of thieves. Can’t eat rocks now can you?” You grin.

“Maybe we should listen to him, Jean,” The girl whispers to the young man.

The boy gives her a death glare and she shrinks back.

“See, she has the right idea. I’ll tell you kids what, if you’re sick and tired of being hungry come to the east side of the docks tonight, I promise that it’ll be worth your while.”

You smile at them before heading back to the residential main street. You should really focus your search more, there are a number of different kinds of people who’d serve well on your crew.

It’s at this point that you realise your crew is pretty undertrained, you’re going to need to find an experienced sailor of some sort to keep the boat running. Between you and Hassid you have all the experience of seamanship, spectacular. Deciding to wander through the residential areas and see if anyone knows of any ex-sailors you begin asking questions. Your first few questions don’t come up with much, contempt for you probably. Any display of wealth tends to not go over well with people living in slums you’ve learned. It’s when you ask the children that you start getting information. Apparently there’s a gentleman the kids call the Captain. Apparently used to serve in a mercenary fleet before he lost his leg and was reduced to begging. Now he takes care of the kids and regales them with stories. Finding him should be easy, look for the one legged beggar outside the tavern called the Mermaid’s Gamble.

Finding the Mermaid’s Gamble on the other hand was hard, the tavern is rundown. And you dare not enter for want of getting shiv’d between the ribs for your boots. The Captain rests against the side of the wall, his eyes closed. You can see where his left leg is gone, replaced with a wooden peg. He’s not as old as you’d have expected, middle aged and unshaven to be true but not old.

“Are you the one the kids call the captain?” You ask him.

He opens his eyes, “I might be. Why? Got a copper to spare?”

“More than a copper, and not to spare either,” You tell him as you lean next to him.

“Explain yourself, boy,” He tells you.

“I need a crew, mainly I need someone to get a crew into shape. You think you can do it?” You ask him.

“Aye, I can. But will I? That’s the question,” He responds.

“I can pay well,” You tell him.

“Tonight,” you answer, “We’re stealing a boat. Meet down by the far east of the docks. We’re leaving Caelos behind us,” You grin.

“With bloody pleasure, lad,” And with that he hobbles off.

You decide that you should still make use of the light while you have it. You head down to the dock, with hopes of scoping out ships and purchasing supplies. And if all goes to plan, hiring a sailor or two. Finding a merchant was easy, haggling him down was harder. You can purchase most of what you'd need for a long journey; rope, rations, and what not for a decent price: a silver and ten copper. However, you don't have much money and it would be a lot. Taking care of weapons would be harder, but you figure that under the cover of night you can kill a guardsman and sailor or two with the element of surprise and take their weapons. There's no way you can afford to arm the crew.

Examining the boats was even easier than finding a merchant, just by acting confidently and interested enough you managed to get the information on most of the boats on the east side of the dock. Of course, a large number of captains now think that the Empire is building a war fleet and purchasing ships from merchants and mercenaries but no matter. There are three ships which suit your purpose, smal and fast ships that can escape the perils of the guardsmen and fleet before they'd know you were there.

You managed to find a pair of disgruntled sailors, both of them drunkards and louts. But willing to work for you and they know their way around the ship. There's also the rebellious son of a merchant, but he didn't talk much and seems disinterested as a whole. Their trustworthiness is questionable

Shit...pirates sorta NEED weapons to do pirating.

Anyway buy the supplies.

...we need cash for a signing bonus for the start. So why don't we look up an armory or some kind of shop that we can hit either before or on the way to the ship?

Get our gear that way and hopefully a little cash.

As for hires...find a few sailors and whoever is the most desperate preferably with some kind of skill or experience. Desperation of course takes precedent.

The boats
>Fortune's Favour: The largest boat, but also the slowest. In okay condition, well worn but definitely sea worthy. Would take a large number of crew doing things at once to successfully navigate with it. While it is large it is still smaller and faster than most ships

>Golden Dragon: The smallest boat, a merchant ship from across the West Ocean. Not as many crew needed to handle it meaning that they are more ready to defend and board. But it is more crowded, still in good condition though

>Accursed Captain: The fastest boat, the middle of them in size. Whilst easily the fastest boat in the harbour it is in relatively poor nick and could be taken down fairly quickly with good hits.

Can change the names as well when they are stolen

>Accursed Captain: The fastest boat, the middle of them in size. Whilst easily the fastest boat in the harbour it is in relatively poor nick and could be taken down fairly quickly with good hits.
We are definitely going to need the space for crew and loot. But I doubt we can get it fast enough to man Fortune's Favour fast enough.

The two sailors and the son, you may be able to force sailors into service at night during the raid. Or get another two or three from the slums through "the captain#

IN that case lets make sure we also grab whoever the 'the captain' recommends.

If we do that and or include the press ganged sailors will it be enough for the Fortune's Favor or not?

Any nearby shops or armories we can rob for gear?
>>
>>36460008
It'll be enough to crew it yes
>>
>>36460008
Robbing more places will probably increase the chances of failure by possibly alerting the night patrol/guards.
>>
So the current plan is:
Purchase the gear
Hire the merchant's son and get the captain to bring some more slumdogs
Kill guards and sailors for weapons
Steal the accursed captain
???
>>
>>36460031
I say rob places near the port to make a quick escape
>>
>>36460031
We can't pirate shit in the first place without equipment for our crew.

Kinda ruins the point.

>>36460064
That was I was hoping for which is why I am curious about shop or armory locations.
>>
There's a single armory near where you are, you can break into it if you wish but it may cause commotion and alert the guards. On the other hands it's weapons you can use to kill said guards

Stealing a docked ship should mean that its at least minimally equipped. That means cannons and ammo. Still can pirate people its just that we would be less equipped for close combat.

We can still also sneak raid villages for valuables in order to build up our crew.

hm true certainly a few bored ass fisherman kids aching for adventure while at the same time would also be good for supplies.

I wouldn't condone raiding them though such places are lacking in valuables better off enjoying the ease of recruitment and supplying.

>>36460103
hm...how about this. We split the thieves and bandits will hit the armory(sneakiest and most experienced in that sorta gig). While the rest of them will hit the ship?
>>
>>36460153
Still worried about the high risk of breaking in. But I will say its fine for now.
>>
Brief break while I eat dinner. Be back soon
>>
>>36460103
Ehh the twins have a few days to spare why not halt the plan for the next day or two so we can figure out the guards patrols for a better chance to loot the armory and recruit a better crew
>>
>>36460222
Too much rescheduling issues since we told the others to come as well. The brothers+thief girl might reconsider our deal and choose to remain as well.
>>
>>36460243
Its not like we can go back to the slums to a endless supply or potential recruits. lets just say we may run into a gang of thieves who just need a leader or can easily overtake the leader, better than that one girl and brothers. The MCs mother may hold some value into recruiting...or unwanted attention...

And back. Writing up now

You purchased the required goods without hesitation, they would definitely come in handy when it would come to stealing the boat and actually sailing it. As you collected the goods you managed to convince the son of a merchant to come with you on this grand escapade, this combined with your current crew and hopefully an additional few brought in by the grizzled veteran you hired in the slums should see it possible to sail any number of small ship. But your eye was on a grander prize, the Accursed Captain, a fast ship if in poor condition.

As the moon shone down upon you and the rebellious son, your crew began to assemble. First came the twins, the two brigands armed with swords, bows, and knives. A devilish glean in their eyes as they spotted you. And a predatory one washed over your new crewmember. Then came Hassid, the nerves obviously running through him as the Eastman approached. Then came “The Captain”, behind him three other slumdogs, each of them holding kitchen knives and looking genuinely excited to get away from their current life. Finally came the thieves, the three teenagers slipping out of the night and amongst you without a sound.

“Ladies and gentlemen, you whispered to them hushly, tonight we begin our careers as pirates. Tonight, is the beginning of the rest of our lives.”
