It is the dawn of the maritime golden age. Ships of all nations cross the seas of the world. From the powerful Imperial navy to the south and its domination of the Great Inland Ocean. To the varied and constantly feuding Merchant City States to the west, their cargo reaching every realm under the stars as their mercenary armies strive to steal power from one another and establish hegemony over trade. To the tribals in the far flung northern continent, and the riches that their virgin lands offer to the wider world. The seas offer boundless opportunity and wealth to those who dare to take the chance.

That's where you come in, there are merchants and trade posts a plenty among those seeking their fortune. And you seek to take it from them. You will become the grandest pirate the world has ever seen and carve your empire of brigands and thieves out of the noble men who stand in your way.

You have constructed a crew out of those desperate enough to seek their fortune under you. With that out of the way it is now your goal to steal a docked ship, amongst other things particularly weapons, in order for you to truly begin your career as a sea dog.

You are Santiago de Costa, and you will build glory from nothing.
>>
Your assembled crew stand before you, each of them showing various degrees of nervousness. Most of them are not hardened sailors, let alone pirates. Trying to get them to actually work as a crew and ensuring you don’t end up at the bottom of the ocean may be harder than you thought. As the moon shines on the lot of you, begin to formulate your plan. It has to be established what exactly you intend to steal, and who you intend to get to do it. Quickly checking to see if there are any guards around, and sighing in relief when you confirm there isn’t you turn to your newfound crew.

“Okay, guys, tonight we steal our ship. I’ve got my eyes on the fastest one in the dock, The Accursed Captain, if we can get our hands on that we can be out of Caeli waters before the port authorities know what happened,” You tell them.

But that still raises the question of what else you should steal:
>Just the ship
>Raid the nearby armoury as well

And who does what?

“We’re going to take that ship, and we’re going to raid the armoury,” You tell your crew as you point towards the unassuming building tucked into the dock, slightly past your quarry, “If we’re going to be out there on the ocean plundering, well we’re going to need to have weapons now aren’t we?”

The crew seem to nod in general consensus in response, the exception being one of your newer recruits, the son of the merchant seems somewhat taken aback at the extra risk being taken. No matter, you don’t need him to kill people, just to help sail the larger ship. The sole issue to be decided is how you’d raid the armoury. You could have your whole crew move from one to the next but that would create a lot of noise, and be slow. Alternatively, you could split your crew. Have some of them attempt to steal the ship and get it ready to leave port, while another group broke into the armoury and stole the weapons you needed.

“If you need sumfin’ broken inta, cap’n,” Llewellyn grins, the southerner fiddling with a knife at his belt, “Then me and Gerry can do it quick and easylike, no survivors.”

“Or,” Jean adds, the street thief’s voice somewhat venomous, “You could send people who can actually pick locks and move quietly in.”

“All five of you will go for the armoury,” You tell them, “Jean, you guys can pick the locks and get in without being seen. Llewellyn, make sure no one kills them.”

“Aye, cap’n,” The redheaded bandit nods before nodding to his sister, both of them unsheathe their swords and grin.

Jean for his part shakes his head in what looks like either contempt or resignation. Either way he nods to his two comrades, the three slinking off into the shadows. Marie giving you a small smile as she does so. The twins follow them in a way that can’t be described as stealthy, but at least it’s quiet. With those five going to do their part, you turn towards the rest of your crew.

“We’re going after that ship there,” you point towards one of the smaller ones, “She’s fast and has enough room for more than enough loot and all of us.”

“Looks like she’s in pretty shit nick, boss,” Hassid remarks.

“Well as long as we don’t get hit by anything that’s fine,” You tell him before you head off.

The larger group of you tries to move quietly, but it’s not exactly as easy as it would seem. As you slink across the dock, you are painfully aware at how easy it would be for a guardsman to spot you. As those thoughts rush across your head, you silently curse. For not fifteen paces away is a pair of guards. The two of them are facing in the opposite direction to you and are leisurely chatting as they shit on a pair of empty wood crates. You scan them over for weapons, both have swords at their hips. But their make is hard to see in the light. It also appears that they also have a parrying dagger each. The ship is another thirty paces in front of these guards, so you’ll have to get past. It’s just a question of how

You motion to your crewmen to halt, deftly drawing your dirk with your right hand you point towards the guards with your left. One of the slumdogs, Tomas you think, nods in agreement as he pulls out a rusted kitchen knife of his own. Silently signalling that he should take the one on the right and you should take the one on the left, you begin creeping forward. You don’t let a single sound escape as you approach the talking guards. Thumbing your dirk in your hands, you grow ever closer, sneaking up behind the pair. Besides you is the man from the slums, his own weapon glistening in the moonlight. You each get behind your quarries without them noticing, your movements like silk. You nod to your crew member and together you strike.

Your hand darts around the mouth of your target before he can react, cutting his laughter off instantly. Within seconds your dagger has drawn across his throat, leaving a clean red line from which his life blood pours. To your right Tomas too has ended the life of his target, his arm wrapped around the man’s neck and his knife jutting out of his skull. The two of you lower the bodies to the floor, not letting a sound escape. And then, just like vultures, you are upon their corpses. Taking their weapons, a parrying dagger and a cutlass, as well as whatever coins they had on their persons. And blessed be the gods, the guards have between them a small fortune of silver. Five pieces in all, it seems as if Lady Luck smiles on you today. Grinning, you raise your bloodied hand and notion for your crew to approach. Tomas keeps his weapons whilst you pass the cutlass and dagger to Hassid, you are more than proficient enough with your dirk and he is yet unarmed. There appear to be no other guards within eyesight or earshot. But that could just mean they are at the armoury.

Immediately, you duck your head so the sailors won’t be able to see you before dropping back to your crew from your position at the front of the party, the lot of them crouched. You point up at the boat and let out a harsh whisper, “Three sailors, playing cards, drunk. Sneak on and kill them.”

Your crew nods in response, each of them taking turns to draw their weapons, the exception being the unarmed Andre. That boy really wasn’t that helpful at this whole stealing a boat thing. Holding a palm up to notion for them to wait for you to give the signal you head towards the boat. Slowly popping your head out of hiding you can see the sailors are still on board but not looking down at the pier at this point in time. Without turning around you raise your hand and sharply beckon for your crew to come. When Hassid comes up beside you, you turn your head over your shoulder. Behind you are Tomas and Pierre, the two ex-sailors from the slum holding their weapons tight. That left the captain, Andre, and Harris on the dock looking out for guardsmen. Worked for you.

You let out a whisper to the three crewmen with you, “They’re on the near side of the deck. Fortunately they’re drunk and distracted. We have to be quick though.”

Hassid lets out a grunt in acknowledgement and you quickly dart towards the sailors. The three men are laughing and drinking, they don’t see the four of you approach until it’s too late. The first to notice lowers his mug and turns towards you, probably just looking at the dock. What he sees is you approaching quickly with your dirk unsheathed. He lets out a little yelp before you stab the dagger into his neck, pulling out as quickly as it entered. The man clutches at his throat, unable to speak as he hits the ground. The other two sailors look up from their cards, just in time for one to be run through the stomach by Hassid’s cutlass.

The final man falls backwards off his chair, before quickly getting to his feet and drawing his own cutlass. He backs off before letting out an animalistic scream and swinging wildly at Hassid, the eastern man blocks the blow with his parrying dagger before bringing down his own sword on the man’s arm. He lets out a scream as he falls, and you curse at the noise, within moments Pierre is on him and has slit his throat.

Tomas beckons for the remainder of the crew to come aboard while the rest of you pick over the bodies. Collecting their silver and passing out weapons. It is then that you notice a dark shape is moving towards you, drawing your dagger and your new found sword quickly, you relax when you discover that it is merely Luc. The youngest of the thieves. The teenage boy nods and grins at you before motioning with his hand at an oncoming group. It’s hard to see but swiftly a small group of people are coming. You smile at them as they come aboard, the twins and the other two thieves holding a series of guns and swords between them.

“Took as much as we could, cap’n,” Gerry whispers to you, her hand and torso covered with blood, “Couple o’ lowlives tried gettin’ in our way. No problems.”

Your crew are assembled and the ship is your’s. You’ve acquired weapons through killing guards and now have an assortment of guns and rifles as well. Things are looking up.

“Cast off, boys,” You tell the crew and immediately the ex-sailors and Andre get to work. Raising sails, pulling out from dock and what not. You turn towards the non-sailors on your ship, “Welcome aboard truly now. I know this is your first time on a ship most likely, don’t worry about it. Need help come to the old man or I.”

The twins nod at you before they go to the grisly work of chucking the bodies overboard. The three thieves look out of place amongst the sailors and the twins, all of them working. You turn to them, “Go ask if there’s anything you need to do. The best way to learn is by doing.”

You, yourself, approach the helm of the ship. Gripping the wheel and allowing your hands to run over its wood. Your own ship, you can still hardly believe it. But you’re in control of your own ship and your own crew.

“Captain!” Hassid calls out from where he’s working at the mast, “There’s movement at the dock. I think they’ve spotted our victims and can see us sailing off.”

You laugh, “Let them they can’t catch us now.”

The eastern man nods before getting back to work. Within minutes your ship is sailing at a quick pace out of the harbour, behind you the angry shouts of guardsmen as they try to rally a ship to chase you. It feels good to be a pirate.

You leave Caelos behind without any major ceremony, the port city simply growing smaller in the distance. Once you’re sure enough you’re well out of the city’s reaches, you leave the helm and order the crew to bring the boat to a stop. You have some things to take care of

You approach the old man, the grizzled war veteran is leant against the side of the ship with his eyes closed. As you approach he opens them and acknowledges your presence with a nod. You lean next to him, taking a deep breath of the salty sea air.

“Been a long time since I’ve been out to sea,” He sighs.

“I can say the same, captain,” You tell him.

He chuckles at that, “Nah, lad, you’re the captain. Just call me Sven, it’s a good enough name.”

“Isn’t that a Svaeken name?” You ask him.

“It is,” He responds, “But that doesn’t matter. So spit out your question, boy.”

“Where do you think we should head? The crew need training and the sort,” You ask.

“You have a map?” He raises an eyebrow.

You nod and pull out the map you bought earlier, showing it to the veteran. The sailor ponders it for a bit before handing it back to you. “Right now we’re probably off the coast of Iberios somewhere, lots of rural villages we could hit up to loot or recruit. Of course we could also go to Porto if we wanted to visit another merchant republic, seeing as I doubt the Caeli want us back in that port anytime soon.”

“So there are easy targets in Iberios?” You ask him.

He nods in response, “The west coast is fairly densly populated, but there are rural fishing villages all along the coasts of Iberios, Gaelia, and Hiberia. Good places for an early crew to train. Of course the Umbrian peninsula has opportunities but those waters are so lawless we’d be risking other pirates.”

“What do you think of the ship’s condition?” You ask him.

“Could be better, but it’s sturdy enough as it is. I’d recommend getting someone to do some minor repairs next time we’re in a port though,” He answers.

“Thank you,” You nod at him.

“Oh, and by the way,” He tells you, “Are you really going to captain a ship named ‘The Accursed Captain’?”

That is something you’ll have to think about, but no matter, it can wait. First thing’s first you have to inspect the cargo hold. Wandering down below deck you come across the crew quarters, relatively tight and with bunks. But there are chests filled with the belongings of the previous owners, so that will come in handy. The captain’s quarters are next to it. It appears the room doubles as both an office and a bedroom. No private dining room, seems that the old captain dined with the crew. When you reach the cargo hold you immediately see that the former crew haven’t loaded off all the cargo yet, and as such you are still in possession of it. That’s always a good sign.

On board the ship are a series of silks and garments, probably brought from Helias then. They should fetch a pretty penny at a port side town. But the cargo doesn’t interest you, what interests you is the box of Heliatic fire. Liquid fire that could be thrown at the enemy or shot out of a cannon, this would make things fun. Cannon wise, cannons lined both the upper deck and lower deck on the broadside. The upper deck holding 12 pounders, and the lower 18 pounders. The shots were all held in the cargo, at least your dangerous weaponry was together. It appears that the cannons are relatively small, and the ability to only fire off one side would be a pain. But the manoeuvrability of the ship should counteract that. Hopefully.

You head back above deck to check on the crew, most of the ex-sailors are running around and making sure that everything is in check, Hassid included. Underfoot the teenage gang of thieves work to collect things and tie knots in ropes. The twins however seem lost and unsure of what to do, and the merchant’s son has disappeared somewhere. As you get back on to the top deck you wander over to the pair of redheads, both of them still somewhat bloody.

“How are things?” You ask them.

Gerry shrugs in response, whilst Llewellyn look down at his feet, somewhat green. And seasickness has struck it appears, he’ll have to get used to it. Sighing you pat him on the back and look out over the horizon, “You’ll get used to it, everyone does.”

The southerner simply nods in response before wandering over to the side of the boat. That leaves you with Gerry, “We’ll be raiding soon, excited to get some action in?”

Too late for that already stolen a ship

Noticing that the merchant’s son is gone you head off to look for him. Wandering over to where Harris is working you ask, “Have you seen Andre?”

The ex-sailor responds in kind, “The boy? Aye, he went below deck.”

Thanking him for his information you head back down below deck and begin to scour the hull of the ship. As if Lady Luck is on your side once more as you enter the crew quarters you find him near instantly, rummaging through one of the lockers that the former owner’s had. Next to him is a large pile of goods which he has removed.

“What are you doing?” You ask.

He looks at you and freezes like a deer in headlights, “Um…”

“Already looting? Shit, son, do something helpful,” You sigh and walk over.

“I just wanted first dibs you know, I’ve always wanted to loot from people I killed,” He tells you.

“Right then, first of all you didn’t kill anyone. Second of all, what kind of thing is that to want to do? This isn’t a hobby, we kill because that’s how we make our living,” You tell him.

“I, well, I,” He stammers.

“Look, you can loot down here later. But right now you’ve done nothing to help on this ship,” You tell him.

“Look, son, we’re going through all of this later and going to divide it equally. There is no first dibs,” You tell him, “Now, when the crew sees you not working and already taking loot they’re going to think that equal for you is different to equal for anyone else. Do you understand?”

“Ah… Yes, sir,” He answers.

You bang him on the head with your fist, not hard enough to hurt him badly but definitely firm enough so that it would hurt. “Now go back to the upper deck and go to the old man for work. He’ll tell you what to do and you best do it, boy,” You tell him.

“Yes, sir,” He answers.

As he goes to leave you sigh, hopefully the captain can whip some sense into him. But still the idea of being called sir and being able to call someone only a few years your junior, boy and son, was a good experience in leadership. Well you tell yourself that, it mainly served to feed your ego. A pirate needs an ego. Now with that taken care of, you can focus on other things, mainly making sure your crew actually do what they’re supposed to do as pirates.

Deciding that before you do anything else you should talk to your crew, you go back up to the top deck and see if you can find the thieves. Sure enough the three teenagers are there, still helping out the three men from the slums that Sven picked out. As you approach you nod at Tomas who nods back before getting back to making sure the sails are secure and the like. The three teenagers turn towards you, almost indifferently.

“How do you like the ship?” You ask them.

“It’s pretty good, better than the slums,” Jean replies, the oldest of them seemingly disinterested in making conversation.

The girl hits him in the chest, “Don’t be rude, Jean.” She turns to you, “Thank you for taking us aboard. Caelos was no place for us.”

The youngest of them merely nods in agreement, you’re beginning to think that the boy is mute. That could be a problem when it comes to running the ship, but not a major one.

“So my ship’s better than slums, got it,” You answer.

“Well, you know what we mean,” Marie says, “The slums were terrible, no place to live let alone grow up. Thievery was our only option. This is a new chance, and it’s so much cleaner.”

You smile at that, “Well I’m not entirely sure whether you can say that you’re no longer thieves but welcome aboard anyway, it’s good to have you.”

The girl grins wide, “Truly thank you, thank you so much.”

The younger boy nods in agreement, his smile big. Jean on his part shrugs before his face softens, “Thanks.” You probably won’t get much better out of him than that.

You approach the three ex-sailors next. They seem to know each other pretty well so it’s only natural they’d stick together. As you get close Pierre waves his hand in greeting.

“All good?” You ask them

“She’s a fine ship,” Pierre agrees, “All set to sail now, or at least bob up and down for a bit.”

“Aye, thanks for that.”

Pierre just nods in response, “So, captain, why is it you decided to become the head of a pirate crew of misfits and nobodies?”

You scratch the back of your head, “Well, my mother was a pirate and taught me how to do it. Besides, I’ve always longed to return to sea. It feels like home.”

“I can agree with that,” Harris adds, the big man grunting.

Of the three of them it is evident that Harris is the biggest, a tower of a man, and his accent implies that he’s from somewhere in Avergnon. But he also seems to talk the least. Tomas, on the other hand is the smallest of them. He has the accent and the look of a Caeli, quick on his feet and from what little you know of him somewhat arrogant. Pierre seems to be an everyman, does what is required and little else. The kind of man good at following orders and doing what needs to be done to the letter. Good sailors the lot of them, captain did well.

“So how is it that the three of you ended up in the slums?” You ask.

Tomas shrugs and answers first, “Fucked my old captain’s wife. He dumped me there without anything, and well couldn’t get anyone to hire me.”

Harris is next to answer, “Got arrested for smuggling, served my time and couldn’t get work. Once you’re in the slums you don’t leave.”

Pierre answers last, “Court martialled and exiled by the Gael navy, apparently llicit transportation of slaves isn’t recommended for the crew of the king’s navy. We all went our separate ways.”
“And now you’re here,” You add, “You boys ever raided a village before?”

“No, but I’m a fast learner,” Tomas grins.
