You're still not totally at peace with that whole thing.

"So what kinda pizza you want?" Kim asks, covering the mouthpiece of the phone with her hand. "Time is kinda a factor here."

You shrug. "Ham and Pineapple." You say, taking a seat on the last empty couch and accepting a tossed beer- some local brew, looks like- with a nod from Melody.

Kim nods and continues with the order- you frown at the number of pizzas she's actually ordering, counting like, ten, but you don't question it. "So you always do this after a mission?"

Brigitte, behind the couch across from you, nods. "Oui, dis be old tradition. dependin on where we be, sometime we go to a bar, sometime we jus stay in de house and watch movies and drink beer." She says. "Dis be de second one, out of respect for our hosts." She indicates Katsumi.

Katsumi laughs. "I'm sure whatever trouble you found yourselves in wouldn't be that bad." She says, standing up. "But, while I'd love to stay, Jessica and I must be leaving."

Jess looks up at her, but doesn't speak- which you're willing to class as a minor miracle. Katsumi looks down at your sister and smiles. "We have to see my mother, remember? we promised." She says, and Jess nods.

"'K but I gotta say bye to Frank." Jess says, standing up and running at you- you brace for a tackle, but she draws up short and hugs you. You return it, rating it about a 4- she doesn't put the same effort into it as Slider, you decide.

"Be safe, bro." She says, quietly enough that you're sure no one else can hear it. "Don't do anything stupid, ok?"

You nod. Not really trusting your voice to respond- Jess is rarely like this.

Another round of goodbyes passes through the room, then Jess and Katsumi leave, leaving you and the team alone again.

"So what do we wanna watch?" Amber says, from down by the VCR. "We got predator and Die hard." She says.

"Doesn't seem like a lot of choice." You say. She shrugs. "We'll get more later, we can rent some stuff from the base exchange if we need to. This is just the starter."

The vote breaks up mostly evenly- three for Predator and three for Die hard, with Brigitte abstaining. All eyes turn to you. "You be de tiebreaker, baron." Brigitte says. "So whatcha wanna be watchin?"

Merlin nods silently, coming the rest of the way down, her shoes- heels, you note- held in her right hand, a small purse on her left. "I-I think I got e-everything." She says, quietly, sitting down in the kitchen, while everyone else crowds around the door.

Brigitte nods. "Maman maybe axin ya for some pointers." She says with a laugh. "Ya wear it well, maman gonna haveta start callin ya someting odder dan little Samantha, oui."

She's interrupted by the doorbell.

"Got it." One of the witches says, opening it to find Kenji, in his dress uniform, his cover in one hand.

"Ah- I'm her for Samantha?" you hear him say, kind of hopefully.

"K-Kenji!" She says, standing up, wobbling a bit on her heels, but steadying out well enough.

Whoever got the door lets him in- he nods at you and you return the gesture, noting his ribbons are fairly impressive, especially for 'just' a crew boss. Not as impressive as yours- or Merlin's, at that- but still, impressive.

You're about to ask the important questions- where are they going, how long do they plan to stay out, that sort of thing, but you're interrupted when the witches start asking. You get the impression that, even though they barely know either of you, they're being protective of Merlin. She's got that effect on people, you think.

Still, you stick around to listen, finding out the name and phone number of the restaurant, as well as Kenji's direct superior officer, the local Police and fire department, EMTs, and the number to call if there's a general military alert, though you're pretty sure, being off duty, they won't call you.

With that all found out, the two of them leave, Kenji driving a small sedan off the base.

"It's so cute!" one of the witches says. You have to agree- it is kinda cute. You're glad, though, that the squadron isn't here to see it- you suspect there'd be some meaningful stares coming your way.

Reclaiming your Pizza, you find your seat empty. You're in it a second before you have to yank your pizza out of the way as Brigitte flops across your lap, stretching her legs out on top of yours. You frown at her, and she grins. "It was eider me or Henrika, baron." She says, and the big valkyrie glares at her.

"I could still just pick you up and take the seat myself." She says, causing Brigitte to laugh.

"Anytime ya feel lucky, ya be welcome ta try." She responds. "Someone be hittin play. I'm comfortable now."

"I bet." You say, dryly.

She grins, without responding.

You finish the movie- and your pineapple-less pizza, and it's someone else's turn to pick. "Commando or Total recall?" Kim asks, holding up the two movies.

"What was that about me having a crush?" Melody asks, grinning.

"Anyone who doesn't think Arnie is hot as fuck is wrong and I don't want to know them." Kim responds. "Except Bishop over there, I guess he's exempt."

You have to give the director credit- the movie, mostly set on mars- does a pretty good job of making colonization of the dead planet believable, with the human colony retrofit into a dead martian city. The architecture is a crazy mix of the more curved, organic martian forms and the blocky, metallic sci-fi take on human buildings, though there's not a lot of focus on that, and more on the story. Still, there's tie-ins, like the mutants, who, according to the movie, are that way because of exposure to the remnants of the weapons the martians used to destroy themselves in their apocalyptic civil war after their bid for earth failed.

"Ya know the seabed colonies protested this movie being released?" Kim says. "Said it unfairly portrayed martians as being self-destructive morons, and that it's unrealistic in it's portrayal of what happened on mars."

You shrug- Brigitte shifts in response to the movement. "Didn't seem like a great idea when I've got a history of flying planes to pieces and the object was to get an intact fandance home." You say. "I'd have gotten away with it, too, if the Japs had been a bit closer."

"Impressive either way." Melody says. "I overheard a couple guys saying that missile should have taken that plane apart, not just cost you an engine."

"That's on Merlin, not me." you say. "I'm just the pilot, she keeps everything together."

"Sounds like you two are really tight." Melody says.
