You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Almost two weeks had passed since you had returned to Japan. During that time, your unit was trying to get used to all of the new changes that have come about. In addition to the F-22 strikers General Granger sent your way, the IJA had also procured a pair of Shinden II strikers for Jetstream and Euclid. Nungesser, of course, felt left out, despite Bullseye pointing out that she had kinda sorta stolen a set of experimental French strikers based on France's new Rafale fighter.

In addition, Ugly and Sokolov had endlessly been testing the new GARDIAN laser defense module, which did a good job swatting MANPADS missiles and even full sized SAMs out of the sky. Of course, it needed a brief pause in between shots to recharge, so it had trouble dealing with simultaneously fired missiles, but it still vastly improved the Comanche's survival rate. You wonder if it could hold up in combat.

And Laika, of course, was still putting the XF-19, now designated the Peregrine, though its paces.

At this point, your witches have already gotten past the worst of the acclimation effects of their new strikers, and you wonder just when this indefinite standby period would end.

Well, you should at least put your trust in the brass, as low as it was. After all, you were just a lowly PJ. Instead, you decide to go check on your witches. As you head toward the hangar, you could see Red lounging in a chair set up on the pavement. Poor Red, you thought. Since she didn't use strikers nor was she given any new toys to play with, she had been extremely bored these past couple of weeks.

"Hey, Red." You say. "What are you doing out here?"

"Just enjoying the show." Red shrugs and points up to the air.

You crane your head up and see small shapes weaving a web of contrails in the sky. No doubt your witches practicing in another simulated dogfight, thought this time it appeared as if all of them were present. At least it looked as if they had already gotten the hang of their new strikers.

"Hmph. Looks like they're having a lot of fun up there." Red grunts. You can almost swear you could detect a hint of jealousy in her voice.

See if there are any land strikers that she can try out. That way, she and Raikov will be "equal" during their inevitable FINAL SHOWDOWN.

"You know, Red." You grin wryly. "You could always try a set of strikers on. Just for fun."

"Oh no. No no no." Red shakes her head. "I remember the last time I tried it. Not fun. Plus you just wanna look at me in my undies, don't you?"

"Pfffft." You snort. "What makes you think that?"

"I see the way you always look at Janice's ass." Red points out.

"In all fairness, Red, who doesn't?" You grin. "I bet you do it, too."

"...no comment." Red grunts.

"And it's not just me you're nervous about, is it?" You raise an eyebrow.

"What makes you say that?" Red's cheeks glow slightly.

"Just a feeling." You shrug innocently. "Anyways, you wanna grab some chow?"

"Yeah, I guess." Red nods. "Lead the way, Cap."

The two of you head over to the base's mess hall. It was a bit early for lunch, but there were still a fair bit of people inside. You and Red each grab a tray of food. You get the standard Western style food, which was the regular cafeteria fare. Red, however, opted to get some of the local Japanese stuff. Mostly fish, rice, and some seaweed.

"Hey..." Red narrows her eyes. "Is... is that motherfucking Anderson there?"

You turn to look, and yes indeed, Colonel Anderson was there casually eating and reading from a file.

Then again, you never really believed running into Anderson in any situation was accidental...

"Anderson." You say simply as you sit across from him. "It's odd to see you all the way out here."

"I go where I'm needed." Anderson shrugs. "And I hear your particular brand of skills are being tragically ignored here."

"In a way." You acknowledge. "Something tells me that you're going to change that?"

"Yes, we have a bit of a situation." Anderson nods. "It's a quick extraction mission."

"High danger level?" Red asks, looking a bit too eager.

"Would I even be asking you otherwise?"

"What's the deal here?" You narrow your eyes.

"As you probably suspect, SOCOM keeps a lot of covert base camps in various locations around the world." Anderson says. "Four days ago, some of our boys captured a high level KPA officer trying to escape Pyongyang."

"And we're supposed to ferry him back?" You ask. "Why? Should you even be telling us this?"

"Nobody is going to listen in on us here. I've made sure of that." Anderson shrugs. "Anyways, the team that nabbed the officer, codenamed Archer, brought him to one of these base camps to be processed. Unfortunately, they haven't checked in for three days now and we fear the worst. We can't call in the Japanese or regular forces, because these places don't officially exist, and I don't have to tell you what happens if this went public."

"And because we just happen to be in the area, and aren't on duty, we're the perfect assets to go to a place that doesn't exist." You finish.

"Exactly." Anderson says.

"Does Kelsey know about this?" Red asks.

"Only if he needs to." Anderson says simply. "Are you in? Remember, this is time sensitive."

"Count me in." You say. "What do we do?"

"Give the order to your people to get ready to sortie. I'll give you the mission details when we're in the air."

"Wait... you're coming with us?" You blink.

"Like I said, this is time sensitive." Anderson grunts. "And those are my boys down there, too. Can't very well leave them to rot, can I?"

You feel your respect for Anderson just went up a bit.

You head over to the hangar, where your air crew and Ugly are gathered. You see you witches just landing from their training exercise.

"Everybody here? Good." You say. "Get geared up. We've got a mission. Top secret."

"Oh, okay." Bullseye nods. "Sounds serious."

"That's because it is." Anderson steps forward. "You got a spare set of clothes?"

"Um yes we do, sir!" Bullseye salutes. "Hoskins, Rex, get to it!"

"Geez, since when did Bullseye start giving out the orders." Hoskins grumbles.

We have complete air superiority right now, we're not pulling fighter jockeys out of their wreckage because there are none to pull out, so we're doing what is also our job, providing support extractions to SF teams.

"Telling him is the least we could do." You say.

"Suit yourself." Anderson says, suddenly now in a combat jumpsuit. "Just don't say more than you need to."

"I know." You nod as you pick up the phone and dial in Kelsey's number. "Colonel Kelsey?"

"Pierce? What's going on?" Your CO asks.

"Um, we're just taking Colonel Anderson out for a ride." You say.

"...I see." Kelsey says. The name is all he needs to hear. "Just be careful, all right? You know how Anderson likes to attract trouble."

"Got it, sir." You say as you hang up the phone. "Okay, we're good to go."

After Anderson transmits a special code to the flight tower, you're given immediate clearance to take off. The Ghost Hawk pulls itself up into the air, while the Comanche and your witches follow close behind.

"All right sir, you mind telling us where exactly we're going?" Bullseye asks. "Can't fly if I don't know where we're going."

"Head for these coordinates." Anderson passes a note to Bullseye, who gives it a quick read.

"Where exactly ARE we headed?" You ask.

"A secret camp codenamed Camp Solomon." Anderson replies. "It's located in the mountains of northern Korea. We've had a covert squad of Green Berets operating out of there leading raids against PLA and KPA targets, as well as helping loyalist villages in the region resist Chinese occupation. The whole region here is a mess, actually. Half the villages are loyal to the Japanese while the other half have joined with the Chinese, and these mountains are crawling with militia from both sides."

"So we're flying into a full blow civil war." You frown.

"More like a series of family feuds." Anderson grunts. "The whole war is just an excuse for villagers to resolve old grudges. I suggest staying away from all of them."

"Noted."

"So uh, what have these militia got in the way of AA assets?" Bullseye asks nervously.

(cont)
>>
>>37172955
"Nothing too serious. These are basically just mountain people, so all they have are small arms, except..."

"I am not liking that." Bullseye grimaces.

"Well, we've been covertly supplying some of the loyalist forces here, so there are definitely anti-tank and MANPADS weapons in circulation. Plus we've got a lot of retreating PLA and KPA forces hiding out in this region, so, uh, their gear might be present as well.

"That's just fuckin' wonderful." Bullseye groans.

"Don't think of it as a danger, think of it as a challenge!" Nungesser says cheerfully as she flies up alongside the Ghost Hawk's cockpit.

"Says the girl that can dodge missiles as naturally as she can breathe." Bullseye grunts.

"Oh, don't be so jealous!"

"Fine. Whatever." Bullseye grunts. "So how are we gonna approach the objective?"

You think about this. You could fly up high, which would guarantee that you stay out of range of any possible small arms fire, but then people would see your approach coming. You could fly low to the ground, which would help mask your approach, but would of course make you more vulnerable to ground fire.

The two witches pull ahead, their new F-22 strikers giving them an alarming rate of speed. Meanwhile, Hoskins and Rex keep a close eye out for any potential enemies.

"So far so good..." You sigh. You haven't come across any enemy fire so far.

"Bullseye, bring her down, we're going to investigate. Ugly, stay in a protective pattern. You see anything that even appears to be hostile you waste it. Janice, you and the other witches do a wide orbit and recon the area. Make sure every witch is in a pair."

"You call, boss." Bullseye nods as he brings the Ghost Hawk around for a landing.

"I'll keep an eye out." Ugly says as the Comanche trains its cannon on the treeline.

"Okay, you heard the Captain!" Janice says. "Tarin and Ghost remain in a pair. Jetstream goes with Euclid, and Nungesser is with me! We'll do a slow, expanding orbit outwards. Report anything suspicious you see!"

As your witches spread out, the Ghost Hawk finally touches down on scorched dirt. You, Red, Rex, and Anderson hop out as the Ghost Hawk pulls up again to maintain a protective orbit, as well as prevent making itself a sitting duck on the ground.

"Okay, spread out and look for clues." You say. "But stay in within the clearing. Don't head into the trees for any reason. Red, you're with me. Rex, you keep an eye on Anderson."

"Roger." Rex nods as he and Anderson split off from you.

"What the hell happened here?" Red coughs as she looks around.

"Nothing good." You sigh. All around, you see the burnt remains of tents and wooden huts. You note the numerous bullet casings littering the ground as well, suggesting that whatever happened here, the Berets didn't go down without a fight. Most of the casings looked to be the standard NATO 5.56, but you could see a few of the larger 7.62 casings the Chinese preferred.

"Doesn't look like the fire was caused by the battle." Red says as she kneels next to a burnt out hut. "It was a controlled demolition. Whoever attacked seized the camp and then razed it."

"Would have figured as much." You nod. "Anderson, how many guys were here?"

"By the last report, we had six Berets and about two dozen local fighters stationed here." Anderson says. "I haven't found any bodies, though."

"Me neither." You nod. "Either they got away, or the bodies got cleaned up."

"This wreckage is at least a day or two old." Rex adds in. "They could be anywhere at this point."

"Perhaps we should reach out the locals." Anderson says. "Maybe they'll know what happened."

The scorpion was both bulkier, and a permanent replacement for her spine, not to mention totally uneeded given a longer timeframe. This mod is just a tap, a facilitator, not a replacement. "Okay, we'll try to raise them on the radio." You say, but grab Anderson's arm. "But first you're going to tell me what's REALLY going on. This isn't just a regular prisoner, isn't it?"

"Of course not." Anderson grunts. "The KPA officer the Berets nabbed was actually an IJA intelligence agent."

"A defector?" You blink.

"A liaison." Anderson narrows his eyes. "We have reason to believe there might be elements within the Japanese armed forces directly aiding the KPA, for reasons we do not yet know."

Now you understand why things were so serious, and why Anderson was insistent that the Japanese not be involved.

"Shit." You breathe. "So this guy is hot."

"Extremely." Anderson nods. "Which is why it is imperative we get him to a secure facility for debriefing."

You see Jetstream and Euclid float closer to the Ghost Hawk, now extremely interested in this conversation.

"Are you accusing members of our intelligence service of treason?" Jetstream narrows her eyes.

"No, we SUSPECT that they are." Anderson glares back. "And don't try to get preachy on me. I'm well aware of how the EPD tried to act behind the Emperor's back."

"This is why I dislike your kind so much." Jetstream shakes her head.

"You and me both." Anderson nods and turns back to you. "So that's the situation."

"Wait..." Red frowns. "If that's the case, then wouldn't be possible we'd be dealing with Japanese SFs?"

"That is a distinct possibility, yes." Anderson nods. "In fact, there's isn't much else that could take on a squad of Green Berets and fighters trained directly by them."

"Wonderful." You grimace. "Try to call them up then."

"This is Hunter!" You hear a voice crackle over the radio in reply. "Situation FUBAR. Requesting immediate evac!"

"Calm down, Hunter!" Anderson barks. "What is your condition?"

"We are down to eight effective! Unknown hostiles in pursuit. We are low on supplies and ammunition. Heading to OP Foxtrot for resupply. We're about ten clicks south of it!"

"OP Foxtrot..." Anderson consults the map. "Got it. We're inbound!"

"Where's OP Foxtrot?" You ask.

"Just keep flying west." Anderson instructs. "It's a small supply dump for emergency situation like this. It'll be a straight shot there.

"Eh, I'm not liking that approach." Bullseye grunts. "That's a lot of forest we gotta go over. Not much cover for flyers like us. I'm thinking we detour north a little and use those mountain peaks as cover."

"That takes time, which we don't have." Anderson retorts. "By the time we clear those peaks my boys may already be dead."

The Comanche returns fire from its cannon, but at the speed it's going, it can't fire for too long or too accurately. You see ruby beams as the GARDIAN begins shooting down the odd MANPADS missile or two, causing midair explosions like fireworks.

The gunfire, meanwhile, is largely inaccurate due to your speed, and your low altitude means they only have the briefest of seconds to target you. However, the cloud of lead gets thicker and thicker, and you know all they need is a few lucky shots on your comparatively fragile Ghost Hawk.

"Aw crap, looks like they were waiting for us!" Bullseye grunts.

"Looks like they got some serious artillery out here!" Ugly warns.

"Captain, if you gain some altitude, me and the other witches can shield you from the ground fire." Janice says. "...with your permission of course."

Thus the second opinion but Merlin didn't just look at blueprints and documents she looked at the actual thing from the fandance they had taken.

Again I really do want another opinion on this but this does seem to be a time sensative thing which while I'm a bit iffy on, I don't think Frank will say no to be a better pilot and Merlin's approval.

Again Frank always says he has a deep trust in Merlin.

"Do it. We can't afford to get hit." You say.

"Roger!" Janice say as she and the other witches form a protective wall between you and the ground fire, forming a large composite magical shield between each other. You see it spark and flash as bullets and cannon shells hit and deflect off of it, and you witches visibly wince at the effort of maintaining the shield.

"How much farther?" You ask.

"Thirty seconds!" Bullseye cries.

"Anderson, make the call!" You yell.

"Hunter, evac is inbound! Are you ready?"

"We're at the LZ!" You hear Hunter yell over the sound of gunfire and explosions. "Be advised, LZ is hot! We're taking small arms and AT fire here!"

Sure enough, up ahead, you can see plumes of smoke as well as flashes from tracer rounds zipping about in the trees.

"All right guys and gals, let's soften them up a bit." You say. "Bullseye, put is in a high orbit for a sec."

"Got it."

As the Ghost Hawk gain altitude, you can see Ugly and the witches performing strafing runs in the trees. Down below, you can see a small camouflaged shack where Hunter was undoubtedly holed up. You can see figures inside cheering at the help from above. Ugly unloads an entire volley of rockets into the trees while the witches pump bullets from their various firearms into the brush. The gunfire from the trees almost immediately ceases as the shooters are either killed or dazed by the sudden and brutal attack.

"Okay, Bullseye, I think this is as good as it's going to get!" Janice reports. "You better make your approach now!"

"Coming in." Bullseye reports.

"Hey, what's that?" Anderson points.

You turn to see a small, black shape hurtling towards the Ghost Hawk. It appeared to be a witch. At first, you thought it was one of your own, until you realized they were all below providing fire support for Hunter. This witch was clad completely in black, wearing a set of what looked to be stealth strikers similar to Ghost's old Nighthawks.

And the oncoming witch draws a large sword...

"Rex, light her up!" You yell.

Rex doesn't even have to be told. He swings the Ghost Hawk's mounted minigun over and lets it rip, sending thousands of bullets streaming towards the oncoming witch. The witch immediately breaks off her charge, darting to the side to avoid the storm of bullets. However, she's not quite fast enough and you can see her shield get shredded to pieces. With her attack failed, the witch dives for the deck.

"Should we pursue?" Tarin asks, obviously in a hunting mood.

"Negative, Tarin. We're not looking for a fight today." You say. "Keep putting up that supporting fire."

Bullseye finally touches the Ghost Hawk down in front of the outpost. Almost immediately, you see a small squad of men in jungle camo gear sprint to the helicopter as fast as possible, with a few of them limping and at least one man having to be carried. You, Rex, and Red help pull the wounded men in and you do a quick headcount. There were the six berets, and two local fighters. All roughed up in some way or the other.

Also with them was one man who was cuffed, with a black bag over his head. No doubt the prisoner Anderson was talking about.

"Thanks for the ride." The lead beret breathes a sigh of relief. "Holy shit, are the THE Captain Pierce?"

"Yep, that's me." You nod.

"Holy shit." Hunter laughs. "Never thought we'd ever get picked up by you! Don't know if that's a blessing or a curse."

"Well, I wouldn't be sent out if it weren't a huge shitshow in the first place." You remark as Bullseye powers up the Ghost Hawk's engines, gaining more altitude. There's still sporadic small arms fire, but the majority of the enemy fire has largely been suppressed thanks to Ugly and your witches. Finally, the Ghost Hawk gains sufficient altitude to get above the effective range of small arms. And even though this allows more MANPADS missiles to fired at you, they were easy pickings for the Comanche's GARDIAN and precision fire from your witches.

"So, Anderson, any idea who that witch that attacked us was?" You ask.

"If I had any guess, it would have been a Tengu commando." Anderson sighs.

"A Tengu?"

"Highly secret special forces. Basically the successors to Japan's old ninja clans." Anderson sighs. "The presence of one here pretty much confirms my fears. I foresee a lot of work in the future."

"Or we could just end the war so we could circumvent all that."

"That works too." Anderson laughs. "We can only hope.

There would be something terribly unusual if a given intelligence service *did not* have at least a couple of shady conspiracies going inside it at a given time.

Btw Ghost how much does Melin know of the system Laika uses?

what are the 'potential' health risks involved Frank mentioned?

How does Merlin take all of this into account?
>>
>>37176296

Merlin knows a great deal about the system, probably the most out of anyone not directly assigned to it or involved with it. She did a lot of research- including talking to the fandance directly. (talking to implants and prosthesis is weird for her, and she prefers not to.)

the other two questions, well. They'll come up Tuesday!
>>
>>37176406
Why does she prefer not to, is it because it's a strange concept for her kind of like talking to someone in another language your not used to.

Is it the machinery in general?

or are implants and prosthesis are assholes?
>>
>>37176452

The first one, mostly. It's just unsettling to her, so she tends to avoid it when she can. Kinda like talking to that crazy uncle everyone has, it's never a pleasant experience for her . Not to mention it's kinda weird, I mean, she's holding a conversation with a piece of machinery embedded or attached to someone while they're right there.
>>
>>37176491
Talking to the crazy uncle is always a fun experience though!

But I will admit the novelty does tend to wear thin at times.

I wonder if this is how Young's family think of him.
>>
>>37176491
WOuldn't that be a drawback for Merlin then if she has the implant wouldn't that mean she has someone literally on her back nagging at her.
>>
>>37176573

Not really. That's part of what make them so unsettling to talk to, they're literally part of a person. It's not like talking to, say, an aircraft, where it's a cohesive whole.
>>
>>37176603
But if she odes get a implant wouldn't that be something weird like talking to herself or a version of herself since it's attached to her yet something different and in coherent.
>>
>>37176634
Yeah I imagine she would be like "Good morning 3rd vertebrae, how did you sleep? Got a crick did you? Well I'm sure Mav can fix that with a massage"
>>
>>37176700

Pretty much this. Most likely she wouldn't talk to it.

She might keep tabs on Frank's though. You know, just to make sure he's ok.
>>
>>37176704
>Most likely she wouldn't talk to it.
But then she would hurt its feelings, and then it would go on a murderous rampage holding Merlin hostage.

And thats bad.

>>37176737

Why does this make me think Merlin is partially doing this for any lewd/stupid antics Frank will get into for laughs.

Does Merlin get a kick out of Frank's romance situation or is surprised/exasperated.
>>
>>37176704
>She might keep tabs on Frank's though. You know, just to make sure he's ok.
