It's been a while. You've been idling around Ffion for the longest time and frankly, it's been boring you. After the little stunt you pulled off in what was previously the land of Arkad, you've been sweetly coerced by your ever-faithful vassal, Sandra Eire, to sit around and twiddle your thumbs for a few weeks. It's been a few weeks. And you want to see the land of Arcadia. Maybe because you're bored. Maybe because you want to see how well they are doing. After all, it was your fault they've come to be what they are now.

You can only hope they are doing well.
>>
“Sandraaa~” Yuna crows. “I'm willing to die for your omelets. Please, mercy.”

Sandra's free hand twitches, clasping rather unsubtly into a fist. “You. You have had breakfast twice already. Do you not know? Gluttony is a sin.”

Yuna smiles with a suspicious gleam in her eyes. “The contrary; I was starving but a fortnight ago. I'd prefer eating than not eating.”

Your vassal cradles her head in her hands, settling herself down on a chair. “Why can't you just say that you like my omelets like a normal person?”

The pink-haired girl cocks her head, swishing her hair in the process. “Yeah, but love is such an arbitrary definition. You can be like, 'Oh, I love this!' and less than a month, you can completely and viciously spurn the same thing you had just loved.”

“Whenever I talk to you, I feel a vein next to my temple deeply pulsating in both hatred and aversion.”

Yuna only shrugs indifferently. “I've been told worse.”

You barge into the room, unable to sit around in lethargy for any longer. “Friends!” you cry. “Idle hands are the devil's playthings!”

Sandra sinks deeper into her chair, muttering to herself, “Two veins.”

“Ffion has been peaceful. Extremely so. I think it's necessary to check up on the neighboring lands.”

“And why is that?”

“Because I am unrightfully bored!” So that's that. But where to first?

“Oh! Oh! Where are we going?” Yuna chips in eagerly, grasping at your shoulders.

“We're taking a visit to Arcadia. It's been a while and I want to see how they're doing.”

Your self-appointed servant waggles her eyebrows. “Fraternizing with your fellow gods?” You decide to ignore this.

Sandra lifts her hand, but shrinks away and drops it back down to her waist. She averts her gaze, tracing the faint cracks of the floor with her eyes. “I see. How long has it been?”

“Long enough.” You still feel uneasy at the prospect of returning to such a land of such great disparity. Partially because it's your fault. But despite that, you feel an urge to return and see how well the people of Arcadia fare. “Let's dally no longer. Shall we go?”

“A moment,” requests Sandra. She walks towards you and juts out her arm stiffly, making eye contact with you from the corner of her eyes.

You blink. “I don't understand.”

“Just extend your hand,” she commands. You do so, if only because she looks like she's going to explode. She takes your hand and grabs at it, clasping it with both of hers. She dips her head, just barely touching her forehead to your knuckles.

“What was that?” asks Yuna, breaking the silence unabashedly.

“It is nothing.” Sandra shakes her head. “Let's depart.”

---

You wonder whether Sandra will ever get over her sicken bouts of sickness after you teleport after from Ffion. She's currently kneeling, murmuring dizzying prayers to herself. Yuna, on the other hand, is perfectly fine.

From the distance, you can see a small village. Though meager in size, it seems to be rampant in activity.

Sandra's a mess. Every time you veer out of the physical world to relocate, she becomes unreasonably sick. Looks like you'll have to stand guard and help her before you can go visit the village.

“Can you stand?” you ask your vassal.

She shakes her head weakly. “There will come a day where we will not have to use divine methods to leave Ffion. That day will be the day I can rest peacefully.”

You gently pull Sandra up from under her shoulders, allowing her to regain her footing. She rubs her forehead, groaning in discomfort.

“Yuna.” You call to your other companion. “Could you help me get Sandra to a place where she can sit down and rest?”

Yuna, however, has disappeared from sight. You glance around in bewilderment, frantically searching the area around for her. You barely make out her voice from the the opposite direction from the village. Behind an incoming caravan, you can see a flash of pink hair. You clutch Sandra tight, moving closer to the traveling convoy.

Your “servant” waves to you, urging you to come over with a flailing of her arms. “Master! Master! We need you!”

“...'We'?” You repeat.

A man with short cut black hair bows low, almost kneeling in your presence.“Please, sir, many of our people has been afflicted with a precarious curse. A disease not known to men of medicine or religion. They have been suffering. But your servant tells us that you know of a way to spare us from this blight. Is this true?”

You glance over at Yuna. She nods vigorously.

“Yuna. Come escort Sandra with me.” She hops over to your side without complaint. After handing off Sandra to her care, you sigh. “Let me see the sick.”

Many of the afflicted are women and children. The inside of the transport containing the ill feels more like a cesspool than a makeshift medical care center. A curious murmur comes about the place when you enter.

You wonder whether you should use your powers again.

Well. It's no use brooding. Small steps. Thoughts of Arkad immediately flood your mind, but you brush them away from your thoughts. For now, you will cleanse.

A radiant light floods the inner confines of the transport, emanating from your being. The light is warm. The light is comforting. The hood over the roof of the wagon billows, unable to contain the sudden surge of power rushing through.

The sick rise from their small cots, gasping in shock. But once fear settles, a queer moment of shame and delight envelop the humans after their previous moment of fright. A child gingerly stands, clutching her pillow in one hand and blanket in the other. Mothers, sisters, and brothers hold each other, spilling tears and crying prayers.

The once deathly quiet caravan is now moving in their own unique splendor; people a-frolick.

The man who spoke with Yuna enters, uttering a shout of disbelief. “By gods, you saved all of the ill? You are no mere alchemist.”

“Alchemist?” Was that what he assumed you were? But you will give him the benefit of the doubt. There is no advantage in your own pride. “Where are my companions? I'll take my leave now.”

“They are currently resting in the front of the caravan.” The man pauses, unsure of himself. “Will you be leaving already? Do you not wish to dwell in the comforts of our quarters?”

“There is no need. I have previous intentions to satisfy.”

Exiting the wagon, you unite with your companions. Seems like Sandra's recovered. Or at least not as deathly pale as before. “Well. My work's done here. Shall we leav–”

“Mister.” A child from the transport pulls on your robe. It's the child from before – the one clutching the pillow. “Thank you.”

“There is no need to thank me. It's my duty, child.”

“Please. You just saved their lives! At least let her thank you.” Yuna giddily smiles, giving the girl a thumbs up.

“Mister,” she addresses you once more. “Who are you?”

Feh.

“I'm Vala. Some god from somewhere.”

“Va-la? Oh. I know a Vala!” The child shifts her gaze left to right, crouching down immediately. She cups her hands to whisper to you. “This is a secret but the people don't like you very much. Don't tell anyone, because I'm not supposed to tell others but I like you because you helped us.”

“...I see. Thank you, child.”

“No, silly, I already thanked you!” she giggles. An older woman, presumably her mother, motions for her to return. Waving goodbye, the child hops back into her mother's arms.

“What did she say?” questions Sandra.

You shrug nonchalantly. “Nothing important. A little secret between the two of us. It matters not. Let's leave.” A twinge of sadness bites you, but you brush it aside.

You're a god, after all.

---

The village, once busy with activity, has become idle. It seems like the place has suddenly become deserted. Only a few stragglers remain. One halts your progress. “Pray tell, travelers, where do you hail from?”

You were about to blurt out your natural response, which would have been Vala, but you stop yourself. The child left you with a few questions. One of them being how well you're received here in Arcadia. So you answer his question vaguely. “From far away, where the islands are plentiful.”

“And they, your servants?” He points to Sandra and Yuna.

“Something like that.” You glance at Sandra sharply before she can add anything. Turning to the buildings, you can obviously see that they are unkempt – weathered and old with age. “Do you know what happened to this village?”

“I do,” he nods. “Would you like to know?”

“Very much so.”

“They left in an exodus. The people are relocating closer to the capital to unite those who have been once oppressed by the reign of Halcyon. Arkad– I mean, Arcadia, is a big land. So they're condensing it. And I'm overseeing the operation. There is space for more if you would like to continue east.”

Why not? “Sure. How far will you be going?”

“Our route goes as far as the capital, but the traders will continue all the way to Avalon through the strait. We'll be happy to drop you off anywhere along the way, if you have somewhere in mind.”

“I have no destination in particular, but I'll be happy to accompany the caravan.”

“Very well.” The man points over to the assembling wagons. “They will depart once the caravan's full.”

“Thank you, friend.”

“Safe travels.”

You, Sandra, and Yuna are escorted into a rather small wagon, only big enough to fit three. The wagon sits still, the caravan not yet ready to take its trip.

Yuna relaxes, leaning over on Sandra's side of the wagon. “Master~” she calls out to you.

You're still uncomfortable with being called master, but Yuna absolutely insists. “What is it?”

“Thank you.” She grins, leaning over and dropping her head on Sandra's lap.

Your vassal responds immediately by pushing Yuna away. “Do you have no regard for personal space?”

“Not particularly!” Yuna squirms around, wriggling free from Sandra's grasp. Sandra looks at you for help, but you remain motionless, hoping that you can remain as a spectator. It's best not to get involved. The wagon jerks with a jump, starting to move to its course.

Surprised by the sudden movement, Sandra's grip on Yuna loosens. “Still. You had Vala help the caravan. I don't really understand.”

“Hmm?” Yuna blinks, tilting her head. “Isn't it obvious? Help those who need it. They needed help. Therefore, help.”

“No, I understand that.” Sandra points towards Yuna. “I just don't understand you.”

Yuna mischievously smirks. “Nobody really understands each other. So it's good enough being nice to each other. Right?”

“I suppose,” Sandra mumbles.

“Whatcha think, Master?” Yuna asks with glimmering eyes. She's expectantly waiting for your answer.

“Um.”

>Destroy all weapons
A country without weapons cannot defend itself from neighboring nations who've got scores to settle.

A country without weapons cannot police itself and maintain public order. The rebels can only spread themselves so far as they work to re-establish the government.

The only power left would be magic and sheer numbers, and that's a recipe for high death tolls in any conflict that escalates to violence.

Destroying the means to make war also does NOT remove the MOTIVATION to make war: crappy economy and very few discovered/exploited resources. Avoiding that issue entirely ultimately causes Arkadia as a whole to suffer.

>Freeing the slaves
Yeah, they're freed. All their shackles were broken. Now what? How will they eat, where will they sleep, do they have marketable skills other than the manual labor they were already doing? A lot of them could be foreigners, having lost their homes to conquest. Where will they go?

We "saved" them without actually making sure they came out of this with a stable lifestyle.

And what of the jobs they were already doing? What if slave labor is integral to the main functions of Arkad, like sewer maintenance? What if removing them left an economic vacuum that further escalates poverty levels?

It doesn't matter which of these issues actually came to pass either: when we made the wish, we didn't even CONSIDER any of them. We are a foreign power from a foreign country just waving our god powers at an issue we did not fully understand.

>>38023705
>Good depends on your own perspective.
It would be great if they could solve it on their own, after all.
>>

>>Destroy all weapons
>A country without weapons cannot defend itself from neighboring nations who've got scores to settle.
Then how the hell did they get weapons in the first place? Blacksmiths, and destruction of weapons was justified because people got rid of retarded elite.

>A country without weapons cannot police itself and maintain public order. The rebels can only spread themselves so far as they work to re-establish the government.
Magic is a thing in this setting, and while weapons were destroyed on the police side, same goes for the criminals. While it would be retarded to say that without weapons there will be no crimes, crime rate should fall for a while.

>The only power left would be magic and sheer numbers, and that's a recipe for high death tolls in any conflict that escalates to violence.
Weapons are mostly melee in this setting. Magic is ranged. Why the shit would mages somehow have a disadvantage at ranged combat with people who relied on melee/throwables in the first place.

>Destroying the means to make war also does NOT remove the MOTIVATION to make war: crappy economy and very few discovered/exploited resources. Avoiding that issue entirely ultimately causes Arkadia as a whole to suffer.
We are clearly shown that the surrounding nations do not want to cause any wars. Also, if the elite caused the economy to degrade because they were retarded, shouldn't it be their fault instead?
>>
>>38024467
Anon do you really think a god smashing all the political, economic, and societal structures of a nation and then just noping out is a good idea? Because that is what we did. There will be suffering, deaths and much anger over it.
>>
>>38024467
>Then how the hell did they get weapons in the first place? Blacksmiths, and destruction of weapons was justified because people got rid of retarded elite.
That doesn't stop a window of time where the country is defenseless to invaders?

>Weapons are mostly melee in this setting. Magic is ranged. Why the shit would mages somehow have a disadvantage at ranged combat with people who relied on melee/throwables in the first place.
I think you misunderstand. Mages would have an advantage, but at the end of the day, they will still be zerg rushed. Zerg rushing MIGHT work, but generally assumes that the people zerg rushing will take very heavy losses.

>We are clearly shown that the surrounding nations do not want to cause any wars.
I think they might want their lands back. And their people back. And that's if some individuals don't want a little bit of revenge, either.

>Also, if the elite caused the economy to degrade because they were retarded, shouldn't it be their fault instead?
It didn't degrade; it was crappy from the start. And what guarantee is their that the people replacing them know how to fix the economy? They're people from the same country, and their was no change to the resources within said country.
>>
>>38024612
It's a better decision in the long run.
>>
>>38024834
For us yes, but we're an immortal deity, unless we get offed we could live forever. In the human term we just turned the entire nation into one big suffering sandwich with no end in sight. Us abandoning them more or less immediately after makes it even worse in their eyes.
>>
>>38024834
Do you mean its the best? If so then you should go jump out of the nearest window. What do you mean better decision? The other choices could have given us another storyline that could have potentially gotten us a better resolution, how could you even claim that this is better then?
>>
>>38024884
We can choose now to have Vala help. The only reason he didn't already is because we weren't given the option.
>>
>>38024834
Anon, take a look at this >>38024884

Now think, what makes you come to the conclusion that it was the better choice? Of all the smoother transitions we could have made, we made the roughest, most abrupt transition and left them. We upturned and ruined lives and then just left. Its pretty clear why they would get mad.
>>
>>38024961
And then our home suffers. Not to mention Vala would be fucking useless at this sort of thing as it's alien to him in the extreme. We are not a judeo-Christian god anon. At best we're greek or norse, powerful yes, smart maybe, able to everything and make no msitakes? Hardly. Besides they are going to hate us for a very long time now regardless. Remember us "helping" started this in the first place.
>>
>>38025029
I'm not saying he needs to devote himself to the problem, but he can help out here and there.
>>
>>38024729
>That doesn't stop a window of time where the country is defenseless to invaders?
That window would be short though - supply and demand will make sure that blacksmiths will get their money's worth on weapons. I'll concede that initially their quality will be shit though.

>I think you misunderstand. Mages would have an advantage, but at the end of the day, they will still be zerg rushed. Zerg rushing MIGHT work, but generally assumes that the people zerg rushing will take very heavy losses.
That depends on the powerlevel of mages in this setting. In the end though, I don't think multiple people in one spot would survive a fireball to the face, and if mages can cast multiples of that, five or eight of them can band against that, assuming there is gonna be another war in the first place.

>I think they might want their lands back. And their people back. And that's if some individuals don't want a little bit of revenge, either.
It's as if people did not hear the news about the revolution. Peace treaties are in order, and with them, land talk. And with angsty individuals, well, mercenaries and bandits are a thing.

>It didn't degrade; it was crappy from the start. And what guarantee is their that the people replacing them know how to fix the economy? They're people from the same country, and their was no change to the resources within said country.
The point is that there is no guarantee, but there is hope that new people will know what the fuck to do in these sorts of situations.

About slaves, various programs about reintegration into society exist, why wouldn't they do that here? Or, you know, you could do it the Vala way and just take them in as it is. Odd jobs exist.

Also, in the first place, that's supposed to be a light-hearted setting, so QM will probably not go into details.
>>
>>38025064
And I'm saying would they even accept after all this time? Us "helping" started this and we have very bad publicity now. They dislike us for good reason, and unless we can magically make it all superplus good twice better than it was they are still going to hold a grudge.

>>38025099
Anon this was light hearted yes but logic dictates we made a big change, so there will be big repercussions, them disliking us is mild comparatively to what it could be.
>>
Regardless whether it was a good idea or not, it kinda fits the character.

“It's okay to help those in need. If people ask for help, then there isn't much reason to deny them aid. Out of kindness and out of unselfishness, we can do good, so we should do good.”

“But what if the help that you give is not the help they need?” Sandra asks, gently bobbing around by the lull of the wagon.

“Too bad.” Yuna shrugs. “When people need help and ask for it, they're not in much position to complain, are they?”

“Well,” you muse. “That's why being good is hard, I guess. It would be rather easy to do good if the only issues were something everybody agreed on.”

Sandra frowns, brooding over her thoughts. “Then how do you know whether you are good or not?”

You pause to scratch your chin, ruminating over her words. “It's scary because you don't.”

“Then Yuna,” Sandra continued, “How can you be so sure you're good?”

Her question is answered by Yuna dropping her head on Sandra's shoulder. She fell asleep. Sandra promptly becomes still, clumsily adjusting her seat to accompany the added weight.

But that's strange. “How come you're not pushing her away this time?”

Lowering her voice, Sandra replies, “She's asleep. It's different when she's not a bumbling idiot intentionally invading my privacy.”

You can't help but smile contentedly at her. “You're a good one, Sandra.”

She pouts.“Whatever.”

You don't understand.

The mark of evening befalls the world, as the sun dips closer to the horizon. The caravan stills itself, and a man enters through the entrance of the wagon. The caravan leader presents himself, nodding in acknowledgment of your presence. “Traveler, the caravan will soon separate towards the capital and the strait of Lymarck. Which road will you wander?”

“We'll be heading to the capital. Will we need to do anything?”

“No, we will be taking care of the preparations. This wagon is heading towards the capital anyway. We will be there before nightfall.” The caravan leader takes his leave, letting the cool air of the evening in as he exits.

The wagon eventually starts again. The constant rumbling of the wheels are oddly soothing, the motion of the uneven surface rocking you back and forth.

Sneaking a glance at Yuna and Sandra, you discover that they're both fast asleep, leaning on each other for support.

You hop over to the edge of the wagon and watch the scenery go by. The last few minutes of the sun above the horizon give you a moment of light before it sinks underneath the world. The view is rather uneventful. There seems to be a lot of fields, with open pockets of free land and wild crops.

But there seems to be a movement in the fields. The wagons screech as they're forced to stop abruptly. A shouting is heard from the distance. The fields rustle with activity, and a group of maybe ten people emerge from the brushes.

You faintly hear the caravan leader talk fervently, but he's too far for you to pick up on his exact words. But whatever is happening does not bode well. You peer behind you. Both Yuna and Sandra stir but otherwise are still asleep.

Exiting the wagon, you move up towards the front of the caravan and to the group of people that arrived. They're brandishing weapons. “We're going to need your valuables,” a man declares matter-of-factly.

The caravan leader shakes his head. “We have none. We're all moving towards the capital with only our personal belongings. Our monetary worth is less than your time, I promise.”

“Then we'll have to take your personal belongings.”

“Sir. We have little to provide, even for ourselves.”

But lets do it stealthily

For the most part I agree with this
>>
>>38026542
Sure why not. We should prepare to defend just in case.

You interject, stepping in front of the caravan leader. “I'd let them pass, sir. They have very little. Just this very day, a plague ripped through their people and if it were not for my assistance, they would be in far worse shape than they are now. Today is a fortunate day for all. And before you ask, no, I do not have any money either.”

“Then?” the bandit questions.

“I did it for free,” you answer.

He taps his foot on the ground, drumming his fingers on his dagger. “And why would that matter to me?”

“Unlike the caravan, you may not be as fortunate as they are.”

The bandit warily shifts his gaze from you to the caravan leader. Then he grunts and rallies his men together. “Be lucky that I am a superstitious man.” They depart back into the fields where they came from. The caravan leader waits until the noise of the rustling fields is gone.

Shouts and cheers from the caravan explode, the night suddenly filled with merrymaking and jubilation.

“An alchemist sent from the heavens!” they cry.

The man with the short-cut hair, the same one who Yuna talked to, sings you praises of glory. “Esteemed alchemist, you have given us both salvation and protection. Moreso than what the gods have given us. How can we ever repay your unyielding kindness?”

You shake your head. You're feeling rather nauseous. “Pay me not in physical deed, but live a good life. Live a righteous life and your debt can be repaid.”

“I promise that our people will not abandon a man, woman, or child in need! We will repay this debt and live a life of good. If a god were like you, I would die happy! In this godless land, only man can depend on man, eh?”

“Oh?” You smile resolutely, looking away from the man. You keep your gaze on the ground. “That's a good mindset to have.” Turning back towards your wagon, you bid the man farewell.

“Will you not stay longer? We are in celebration of good fortune.”

“I am tired.” And tired you are. Not as the alchemist, but as the god, Vala.

A waking Sandra greets you as you re-enter the wagon. As she stretches, a sleeping Yuna flops over. “Mmmrh, did something happen? I heard some noise outside.”

“A celebration, of sorts. I'm rather tired, so I'm going to retire for the night.”

Sandra stares for a moment, rubbing her eyes once. Then she uprights Yuna, along with Sandra herself, over to your side of the wagon. “Then rest. We'll be here.”

“Fine.”

“Good night.”

“Night.”

And that's the thread for tonight. Thoughts? Questions? Questions about a supposed backstory to Deity Quest I was supposed to write and then didn't? Etc.
>>

So did we accidentally knock off the other two deities or was hat hyperbole? How bad is it here? Thanks for running!
>>
>>38027624
can't help but to feel we screwed up badly in the past.
>>
Thanks for running. It's really great to see this come back.

Although, it seems like Vala has become a bit more subdued or formal or something than he used to be. Is that intentional? And what did that guy mean by 'godless' ? Isn't Minerva still here?
>>
>>38027687
>>38027747

From the last thread:
Minerva has become the official deity of Arcadia and Anya is.. well. She's around. Whether it's hyperbole or not will probably be answered in the next update.

That's entirely up to debate

Deleted my last post because I cannot into quoting.

>>
>>38027974
We'll see. At the earliest, it'll be Sunday, but I might have work to do on the weekend. If not, I may write a short and post that instead. I'll keep everyone posted on Twitter.
