It was supposed to be easy. You weren't even supposed to fight. You were supposed to go on vacation for a few months until the Gallian Army figured out where to send you.

Then you stumbled upon the aftermath of an Imperial attack on a group of civilians. You have no idea why the Empire would send soldiers this far into Gallia to abduct a singer of all people, but you're the only one around who can deal with the problem.

"The survivor's fine by the usual military standards," Nina says. "I wouldn't recommend moving him, but under the current circumstances, we don't have much of a choice."

"It's not much, but I'll take it." You look towards the forest the Imperials disappeared into. "We don't have a lot of good options. We can bring him with us to track down the Imperials, send him back on his own to warn the city or escort him back to the city ourselves."

"Do we really need to find the Imperials?" Nina asks. "We could get reinforcements first."

"They must have some sort of base nearby if they have a tank with them," you say. "We might be able to pick up their trail even if we don't follow them immediately. It would give them time to fortify their position though."

"I guess this is why you're paid to make the decisions," Nina says. "What are your orders?"

>"Bring the survivor with us. We're leaving immediately."
>"Send the survivor back to the city. They need to be warned and we need to find these Imperials."
>"We're bringing this man back to the city. We'll get reinforcements and hope we can track down the Imperials."

"Send the survivor back to the city," you say. "They need to hear about this, and we need to find those Imperials before they reach their destination."

"I suppose that's the best option," Nina says. "Do you mind if we lend him a truck?"

"Sure," you say. "It's not like it'll do us any good."

Nina takes care of the survivor while you gather the rest of your team. You have enough supplies to run an impromptu mission, but you're sadly short on little conveniences like map and intelligence. Still, you can't let Imperials roam free in Gallia.

"This attack needs to be dealt with," you say. "I don't know why the Imperials are here and I don't care. We need to go after them. However, since this isn't an official assignment form the Gallian Army, it's a grey area whether or not I can order you to follow me. What do you all think."

Everyone shrugs, except for Roberta, who doesn't seem to care at all.

"I don't want to let these bastards get away with attacking civilians like this," Jetje says. "None of us do. Just come up with a plan, boss."

"Good," you say. "Let's get ready."

You unload as many military supplies as you can carry and help them survivor into one of your trucks. He doesn't look very good, but Nina thinks he can make it and it's not like he has a choice anyway. He'll be better off getting treatment in town. The man drives down the road while you enter the forest.

"Here's the plan…"

>"Rush ahead. I don't want to let the Imperials gain ground on us."
>"Kreuss and I will scout ahead. I want to ambush them if possible."

"Kreuss, let's go," you say. "If possible, I'd like to ambush them."

"Yes, sir!"

Kreuss follows you into the woods while the rest of the team stays behind at the edge of the forest. It's not hard to follow the Imperials' trail - tank tracks aren't subtle - and you stay a few feet away from their trail in order to stay hidden.

The trail winds left and right through the trees. The forest isn't too thick, but it's still not easy for a tank to pass through without taking detours.

But the tank isn't your only problem.

You put a hand on her shoulder to stop her and point up into the trees, where an Imperial sniper is hiding among the branches. He's almost completely invisible, but you know exactly what to look for. He hasn't seen you yet, or else you wouldn't still be alive. That gives you the advantage.

Now that you know he's there, the sniper won't be difficult to deal with. He might cause problems for the rest of your team, but it's not like he'll be able to casually stay behind if you attack the main force. You motion for Kreuss to stay quiet and keep moving. If the Imperial team's sniper is here, the main force can't be too far behind. If anything, it's strange that you can't hear the sound of their tank's engine.

You and Kreuss follow the tank tracks to a small clearing in the woods. That's where you find the Imperials.

One tank, two scouts, two engineers, two shocktroopers and one woman who's bound in steel chains and manacles. They must have decided to stay here for the night. Maybe their main camp is still too far from here. Maybe they thought the noise would attract attention. Whatever the reason they're here, it doesn't matter.

"This looks a little bit… bad," Kreuss says.

"The tank crew isn't out, so they must be inside their tank," you say. "Between them and the sniper keeping watch, it won't be easy to attack the camp. They're careful bastards, I'll give them that."

Adeleine Brightward isn't going anywhere until someone takes her chains off, so you can't sneak off with her. The Imperials' commander isn't out in the open, so you can't assassinate him and hope their team falls apart either. You can take out some of their people to cause a distraction and get the enemy sniper's attention, or you can go right for the sniper and clear the way for your team. Either way, you'll need to stay down and fight for your life until your team gets here. You could just go back for your team, but it's extremely unlikely that you'll get the element of surprise in that case.

"Let's head back," you say. "In the first place, this was just a scouting mission."

"Yes, sir."

You take the long way back to make sure the Imperials don't spot you. You're greeted by raised guns when you return to your team, but they quickly put their weapons away when they see you.

"It's nice to see you're still paying attention," you say. "Now let's get moving. We'll come up with a plan along the way."

"What's the status of the Imperials, sir?"

"They set up camp a fair distance away," you say. "The problem is that they have a sniper keeping watch. We won't be able to sneak past them, so we'll have to organize a direct assault. Get rid of the sniper first, draw out the rest of their forces and hopefully make it through without any casualties."

"We might be able to flank them," Garcia says. "I can attack the sniper to get their attention while the rest of the team gets ready to intercept the rest of the soldiers."

"That's not a bad idea," Nelson says. "It might give me a chance to get behind them and hit their tank."

>"I'm not taking any risks on complicated manoeuvres. We're going for the direct assault. I'll take out the sniper once we get there."

"All right, let's get creative," you say. "Garcia, suppress the sniper. Nelson, hit the tank. The rest of us will clean up the rest of the Imperials."

"I hope this works," Stroheim says. "I don't like just shooting at people, but at least it's straightforward."

You lead the team back to the Imperial camp, this time at a faster pace. You're not so worried about getting caught and you'd rather just prevent the sniper from lining up a shot. It'll be fine so long as you all keep moving.

You increase your pace as you get closer to the camp and point out to the tree where the sniper was hiding.

"Garcia, there's your target!"

The shocktrooper lags behind and sprays the tree with bullets. You hear a scream, as well as the all too familiar sound of bullets ripping through a human body, and something falls out of the branches. You don't have much time to dwell on it.

You point out to a path that circumvents the camp and Nelson breaks off from the group as well to hunt down his own target.

The Imperials yell and fire into the forest. They don't know your exact position, but a lucky shot is all it takes. Kreuss and Stroheim are able to suppress the Imperials long enough for Schreiner and Leifstel to bunker down, while you crawl into the bushes and fire a shot at one of the nearest targets - an engineer, by the looks of it.

The Imperials learn their lesson and find cover of their own just as the tank turns its main gun towards you.

Then the back of the tank explodes.

That's one less problem for you to deal with. You still need to finish off two scouts, one engineer and two shocktroopers.

>Rush the camp! You don't want them going after Nelson.
>Keep them pinned down until Garcia catches up! They won't be able to go anywhere.

An interesting thing is that it's hard to use tactics quite like RL ones, because the weapons in use by the Gallians and Imperials are kinda funny. You got your SMG's, but you don't really have light machine guns, so much. There are rifles, but they are more a sniper thing, since scouts have weapons that are more like carbines, frequently. (This varies, of course. Later guns are more rifle-y, and meaty. A lot of the initial guns are carbines, though.)

You also have quite a bit of personal armor, some of which is fairly effective in spite of being "lol basically pre WW1 Cuirassier armor".

"Charge! Charge!" You yell. "Don't let them get away!"

You start the charge by putting a hole the size of your fist in the second engineer's chest.

Leifstel and Schreiner leap forward to slash the Imperial scouts, who had gotten ahead of their troops. They barely avoid getting cut in half, but it's clear they're dead. The remaining Imperials - the shocktroopers - finally get the idea that the battle isn't going their way and begin to pull back. They're not retreating, however. They use their machine guns to keep your team away and climb into the tank's wreckage. It's not exactly safe, but the tank doesn't seem to be on fire and it offers good cover. They fire wildly into your general direction without even peeking out from inside the tank.

Getting them out of there will be tricky, and you can't take the risk that their wild shooting will harm their hostage. A grenade will work if Stroheim can get close enough to through it down the hatch, but you might be able to flank the wreckage. The front and sides of the tank are mostly fine, but the back must have taken serious damage.

Garcia finally joins up with your group and fires her machine gun at the tank.

"Garcia, make sure they keep their heads inside," you say. "I'll finish this off."

"Yes, sir."

Garcia lets off a steady stream of bullets with support from Kreuss and Stroheim. You dart back into the forest and run around the Imperial camp until you're on the other side of the tank.

As you suspected, the bank of the tank is wide open. You can clearly see the shocktroopers, but they haven't spotted you yet, even though one of them is keeping watch on the tank's exposed back.

You fire a bullet right through the inept sentry's heart. The other shocktrooper turns around to check on his comrade. A lance streaks through the air, through the open wreckage of the tank and explodes inside, finishing off the second shocktrooper.

Nelson walks up from behind you and pats you on the book.

"Thanks for that, sir," he says. "I wouldn't have been able to ready a shot if you hadn't taken out their sentry."

"Secure the area," you say. "I want to take a look around, just in case."

"You think the Imperials will have a map to their base?" William asks.

"Probably not," you say. "But they might have something we can use."

Nina is examining Brightward. It takes both Jetje and Karl to wrap all the chains and Roberta has to shoot some of the links with her machine gun to get them to open, but it seems Brightward is fine. Or at least, fine enough that Nina hasn't immediately declared her dead.

Meanwhile, Vanessa is looking through the corpses while you examine the tank's charred wreckage. There might have been something useful in there once, but now, it's just useless ashes.

First things first. The Imperials came all the way here just to abduct a singer. That's a massive risk and a lot of resources wasted for very little. Sure, Brightward bruised the Empire's pride when she left it for Gallia, but not amount of pride is worth this much.

"Nina, how's our damsel in distressed doing?"

"They knocked her out with something," she says. "There shouldn't be any permanent problems. It looks like it was just a normal anaesthetic. I am concerned with the chains though."

Brightward's wrists and ankles are covered in bruises from the manacles she was wearing. They don't look too serious to you, but they're quite something else for a civilian, especially a woman.

"I have no idea why the soldier would put so much effort into chaining her up," Nina says. "It doesn't make any sense."

"Nothing about this makes sense," you say. "Things would be a whole lot easier if it did. Do you know when she'll wake up?"

"A few hours, probably," Nina says. "I'd rather not move her, to be honest. We have enough supplies to last us a while anyway and if the survivor made it to the city, we might get reinforcements soon."

"We'll set up a watch, just in case," you say.

"I think I found something." Vanessa runs up to you. She's carrying a very large number of papers. "I was going through the Imperials' patrol notes and I think I found the location of their main camp, or at least enough information to trace back their steps."

"At least we're getting some good news," you say.

Military Intelligence screwed up big on this one. I mean how the hell do you smuggle a tank + company through what is essentialy a WW1 frontline unobserved.

"Let's get ready to return to the city," you say. "We'll leave as soon as possible."

"I guess we can risk moving Brightward," Nina says. "It would be less dangerous than staying here and getting shot at.

"Right, the Imperials might send another patrol," you say. "Take all their equipment and let's get going."

Taking a few personal arms won't change much in the grand scheme of things, but every little bit helps. It takes you 15 minutes to grab everything you can and figure out a way to put Brightward on Jetje's back so she won't fall off. Nina fusses over her a little, but everything seems find. You and Vanessa take point on the way back, while Karl takes the rear guard.

You see a large number of lights as you get closer to the road. Peering through your scope, you confirm that Captain DuLac and her squad have arrived.

"Captain!" You yell to announce your presence. "My team's fine, but we have a wounded hostage."

"Understood!" Captain DuLac yells back. "I brought a few doctors with me just in case. Let's head back to the city."

You pick up the pace and wave your team onward. The first part of the job is done. Now, you just need to find out why the Imperials were here in the first place.
