The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
>Last time on Magus Hunter Quest: You have a talk with the farmers, deliver their kids to one of the Order’s civilian compounds and leave the (ex-)boyfriend’s fate in the hands of the Order members there. You did have an… Odd experience at the farm as you contained the eldest daughter’s rage. After that first mission, you debrief, finding Milly to be ever more disturbing and having a private talk with her where you order her to no longer practice self-harm if she perceives herself to fail in some way. After a night’s sleep, you set the team to work on the surveillance while reporting to Lilliana about Milly and getting some valuable information.

In the afternoon, you let the whole team work on getting the training room in order. Even Milly is helping, though she seems to limit herself to drawing up possible lay-outs and pointing out mistakes the rest of the team makes. While helpful, it can be incredibly annoying.

The rest of the team, minus Liam as he configures the surveillance, works hard and you work alongside them. By the evening you get some of the basic stuff done. You’re reworking the floor and leaving ample space to build training mattresses for sparring. You might consider using a second room to build a gun range.

At dinner, Liam tells you that he’ll have the security configuration set up by the end of the day.

> House project time!
> This system will be used for all work on rooms.
> For progress each party member rolls mind or body, whichever is higher. 65+ is 5% progress, 90+ is 10%.
> Making simple rooms (e.g. a basic RnR room) or modifying existing rooms will give higher percentages per success rolled depending on the complexity.
> Working in the evening is only 50% efficient due to having less time and being tired from a day’s work.

You continue working on the training room. Everyone’s getting a bit tired from a hard day’s work, but there’s no complaining. You don’t manage to get as much done as this afternoon, but everyone does a good job, and you feel like you’ve come about halfway through the work. All the preparations are complete, the floor’s been stripped open and partially replaced, and the training mats are already in place. They just need a finishing touch to get the area around it in order.

You thank and congratulate your team for the hard work, and go to bed. Raphael apparently got into a discussion with Milly about something, but you’re tired enough to neither understand nor care about what.

-

You follow your usual morning routine, but there is one thing different now. You normally don’t leave behind filthy bathrooms, but it looks like someone cleaned it out a bit. When you get out of the shower, a towel is lying ready and your clothes are neatly placed where you want them. It seems the spirit is getting stronger now.

After breakfast with the team, you decide on what to do for the morning.

You take the team out to investigate the dolmen in the forest. As you pass through your detection zone, you find it very hard to spot any kind of camera or other thing. Liam shows you live video feeds of some of them from his phone, and you must say you’re impressed. It’s very hard to spot them even if you know where they are.

Once at the dolmen you fan out to see if there’s anything similar in the area or anything else. Nathan finds another stone protruding from the ground with some markings. So do Katherine and Blake. Raphael and Milly study the little piece of dolmen that’s already visible, and Milly spots some kind of hidden runes on it that she can identify as ancient Celtic.

“It’s only a small part of course, but I think it might be a bit more than a simple grave.” She’s holding a tablet and is looking at some kind of database of Celtic runes. “From what I can gather, it says something about gathering power, but the rest is buried. We’ll have to dig it up if we want to know for sure.”

You reach out with your mind, and mentally search the place. You can’t detect anything mystical, but you keep looking. Wait, what was that? Something brushed against your consciousness. Something ancient but incredibly weak. You look for it and find some kind of near-dead entity. It’s… Bound to this place? At least, that’d be your best guess. You can’t really find out more without getting Milly to translate the rest of the runes, and maybe check inside the dolmen itself.

>1. Start digging it up. (The team will go get tools from the house while you can use your telekinesis)
>2. let it be for now. It’s not a high priority and you can still do something else this morning. (new choice of what to do, but will by at 50% efficiency)

“Alright people, we’re going to dig it up. If you go and get some tools, I’ll start some of the rough work with my telekinetics.”

The whole team goes off, but Milly pauses next to you. “What is it Milly?”

“This is not in the scope of my assignment. I will move back to the observatory and add the security net to its setup. I will return once the digging is over.” She doesn’t give you much chance to respond as she immediately heads back to the mansion. To be honest, with her build you doubt she’d contribute much to begin with.

You stretch out your mind over the dirt. You try to wriggle in between the dirt and the stone and push the dirt away from it a bit, but it proves more difficult than you’d imagined. Doesn’t seem like it’s the good approach. You experiment with it for a few moments, and in the end you settle for simply scraping off layer after layer of dirt, dumping it to the side. The work is slow, and you’ve barely uncovered the top stone of the dolmen by the time the others are back.

Once they return, the work goes much faster, though Katherine and Liam seem to be struggling with the hard physical work. You stick to moving away the ground the rest of the team loosens up with their shovels, and by noon, you’ve dug open about half of the entrance and the runes or symbols or whatever they are around the doorway.

>1. Enter it, see what’s inside.

You quickly page Milly to come, and try to scout the tomb with your mind again with Raphael’s help. There doesn’t seem to be anything, and the only mystical thing you find is the entity you found previously. And that’s very weak. Dolmen didn’t actually have any physical traps, but you suppose it doesn’t hurt to check. A few tests later you’re fairly sure there’s nothing there, and Milly arrives.

“I must say I had expected you to fully uncover them before calling for me. No matter, I’ll work with what I have.” Milly says. She whips out her datapad and starts scribbling on it. After a few minutes, she speaks up.

“Again, the translation is incomplete, but the gist of the inscriptions is that a great sorcerer warlord lies here, gathering power from the world itself to return to conquer it.”

So, that might be the entity inside. Still, it doesn’t seem like he’s been gathering much power. There’s less left of it than what you’d find in a regular human mind. You doubt you could communicate with it if you wanted to. It might not even be capable of being conscious any more.

You head inside with Milly in tow. The ceiling is low, and with the entrance only half open, there is little light that gets to the actual burial chamber. You’re wondering whether it’s safe to use light when suddenly the room is brightly lit by something Milly is holding. You almost flinch from surprise.

“Don’t worry, this is advanced equipment. It does not damage ancient materials.” She says.

Well, fair enough. Now you get a good look at the room you’re in. It’s small, barely high enough to stand up, though Milly has no problem, being nearly a head smaller than you. The first thing you notice is that the walls are filled with carven symbols. There doesn’t seem to be a beginning or an end to it.

The second thing you notice is the circle in the middle, and a desiccated corpse lying in the middle of it. It looks hundreds if not thousands of years old. It’s definitely where the entity is stored in. While you’re examining the surroundings, Milly already took to translating.

The rest of the tomb is fairly barren. In the four corners are urns, one of which has an ancient sword sticking out of it and one other has a metal frame of what used to be a wooden shield leaning against it. You suppose the urns holds the warlord’s worldly possessions.

“Sir, there is no need for you to remain here. I will translate this while you and the rest of the team eat.”

“And what about you?” You ask.

“I will eat later. I’ll be fine here. By the time you’re finished eating I’ll have a rough translation of what the symbols mean or were supposed to do.” She replies.

“Very well.” You leave her be and return to the mansion, though Blake volunteers to stay there to make sure nothing goes wrong. When you get to the mansion you quickly gather up some of the food you know he likes and bring it to him, along with some extra for Milly.
>>
By the time you’re finished with dinner, Milly and Blake return.

“Sir, from what I can gather the text on the stones outside were accurate. The text inside was a mixture between a spell and a chronicle. It detailed the warrior’s greatest victories, and spoke of rivers of magic that I can only assume are ley lines. They are supposed to cross here in much larger number than normally, so he’d absorb power from them to be revived. It seems something went wrong, as he should have been revived five hundred years after he died, around 3000 years ago. I believe that what’s left of him is trapped there in eternal torment, unable to continue to his respective afterlife.”

>1. Ley lines? Do you have anything to check those?

“So there’s absolutely no risk of letting him loose here or something?” You ask.

“I don’t think there’s much left to let loose. It’s weaker than a mundane human mind. I suspect that any tampering with the spell keeping him there will simply let him pass on.” Milly responds. “The only choices here are to keep him there or to let him go.”

“Hmm…” You nod. You were wondering whether he’d be a threat if revived, or perhaps an asset for the Order. Doesn’t seem like those are possibilities though. “So the circle, was it meant to divert the energy flow from the spell or something?”

“Oh no, it was part of the original spell. It was carved out with the same tools, and there were some smaller symbols around it that should have guided the energy into the circle.” Mills tells you.

“And the ley lines? Do you have anything to check those?” You ask.

“How familiar are you with ley lines sir?” She says.

You frown. “Not very. They’re supposed to be flows of mystical energy through the earth, a sort of blood stream of the planet itself, right?”

“Correct. However, they are very hard to actually detect, most likely due to flowing beneath the earth’s crust, though on some locations they come closer to the surface. They were being mathematically calculated long before anyone could say for certain where they actually lay through means of detection. They’re still a mystery of sorts, but in recent years the fusion of magic and technology has reached a point where we can detect them with 95% accuracy. Maps are being made, but it is slow and tedious work, as the detection radius is limited to a couple of dozen meters, and the ley lines themselves vary between two meters and twenty centimeters wide. Now, I do not have such a device, but I believe that I can come up with an alternative detection method by tomorrow with the equipment I have.”

“This doesn’t interfere with your regular duties, does it?” You ask.

“No sir.”

“Very well then. Go ahead.” Milly goes off to her observatory while you gather the rest of the team. You ask Raphael to research the circle in the basement, and the rest of you continue to work on the training room.

Work progresses quickly. Nathan hits a finger with a hammer, but outside of that it goes remarkably smooth. Using your telekinesis you manage to speed up the construction by a lot. By the time you’re finished, all that’s left to do is to assemble the work-out gear. You could probably finish it this evening.

When you enter the living room, you find Raphael with a large stack of the ancient tomes next to him. He’s visibly frustrated, and looks up with a sigh of relief as you enter.

“I suppose that’s enough for now?” He asks. You nod. “Oh good. I’m not sure how much longer I could have lasted reading through all this.”

You shoot him an inquisitive look and he elaborates. “I reasoned that whoever did this, that ‘Tobias Patterson’, would most likely have left some documentation on his work. Even geniuses can’t remember everything they ever did, and definitely not with something this complex. I just haven’t found anything useful. They’d all be interesting reads if I could do so for myself, but oh well, I doubt I’ll get much chance for that.”

Maybe we could ask the ghostly butler to prepare meal for Milly in her lair? Maybe he already did?

Very well, writing.

You decide you’ve had the team working hard enough as it is. They’ve earned some downtime. You ask if someone would be willing to get Milly something to eat, and Nathan volunteers. He seems to be the first one to volunteer on any job you ask, you notice.

You ask Katherine if you could have a word. You head to your office, but you immediately make clear it’s just an informal though private chat.

“So, I was just wondering, as the groups social specialist, what do you make of the team so far?” You ask her.

“Well, They’re all hard-working people. Liam’s a bit of a loner and doesn’t talk much, but he’s dependable if something needs doing. Nathan was cautious towards the group at first, but he’s been opening up a lot. I can tell that his mind is someplace else a lot of the time though. His daughter I suppose. Still, he seems to be really motivated to make a difference. Blake’s very laid-back. To be honest I’m surprised about that, after what he went through. He’s a bit of a kidder, but nothing malicious. He’s easy to get along with, though I don’t think he’s let anyone really grow close to him in a long time.”

You nod. Katherine continues. “Raphael is also really social, but a bit on the naive side I’d say. He needs a good steering hand every now and then or he’d get lost in his own impulses. Still, he enjoys his job, and like to help people. Milly… I have no idea what to think of her. You’re the person she’s talked to the most, and from what I’ve heard about her from Raphael she seems to be extremely critical of everything around her, and 100% focussed on her job. I’d say she needs to loosen up a bit, but I don’t know if she’s capable of it.”

“Well then,” you say, “That just leaves you and me.” You say.

“Erm, you want me to evaluate you too? And I’m not sure if I can do that for myself…” She says.
>>
“That’s ok, just give it a shot. I promise you I won’t think badly of you.” You smile at her.

“Very well, let’s start with myself. I’d say I fit in ok. I get along rather well with Raphael and Nathan. I suppose I still have to find myself in the team a bit. I’m not really that useful as the rest in the downtime. As for you…”

She pauses for a moment and looks at you before she starts talking again. “I’d say you’re lonely. You’ve been alone throughout your training and even your career, and you’re afraid to get too attached to people. You’re a very good leader, and try to act like a kind of father to the team, but there’s still a distance between you and us.”

She breathes out, and you notice you’ve been holding your breath too.

>How do you respond?
>1. That’s nonsense!
>2. Ask her to continue to the evaluation as a team.
>3. Ask her why she thinks all of that about you.
>4. Write in.

>Lonely? Now that's interesting. Never thought of it that way. Thanks for the vote of confidence though.

By the way, what's policy of Order for allowing people time off for personal business? Like Nathan to visit his family, Kathie for her kids or us that orphaned kid from chargen or the quardruplets (sp?) from the farm?

Naturally we'd have to spread that out to keep a workable team...

You can request time off during which time they'll try to arrange a backup to cover your area in case anything happens.

You are however, free to let your team members go to places as long as you consider it does not jeopardise any action you might have to take while that person is away. If anything serious DOES happen then, you might get chewed out, but there wouldn't be any actual punishment.

“That’s…” You’re not really sure how to respond to that. You haven’t really considered yourself as ‘lonely’. Food for thought perhaps? “Well, thanks for the vote of confidence.” You tell her.

“Now, onto the evaluation as a team…” You continue. “What are your thoughts on that?”

Katherine thinks for a moment before she speaks. “Blake makes Raphael uncomfortable. Well, I suppose he makes all of us mystics uncomfortable. It’s oddly stifling to not feel other people’s emotions. It’s like I suddenly lose one of my sense. Well, in a way it’s exactly like that. I suppose you and Liam feel the same way. That said, he does work together very well with everyone despite being somewhat disruptive for most of us. He does seem to work well with Nathan though. For the rest, I think we can all go together fairly well. They’re all dependable people. You know they have your back if you need them to. I’d say it’s a bit too early to say there’s much of a dynamic for the rest.”

“Thank you Katherine.”

>1. Ask her something else (specify).
>2. let her go, go to bed yourself.
>3. Let her go, do something else for a moment longer (specify, you don’t have that much time before you’ll go to bed so the action will be limited).

Writing. It'll be the last post for today, I'm going to go to bed a bit early. My apologies, but I've been sleeping a bit badly lately.

“Well, that was it. I’m going to bed now. Good night, Katherine, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Goodnight sir.” She says as she leaves your office. You head to your room and get ready for bed. Before you actually go to sleep though, you try to broaden your mind again and feel the spirit of the house. It’s a lot easier already, and when you find him you get an unexpected surprise.

“Good… Day… Master…”

It seems to take some time for him to form the words, but he can actually talk this way already. It’d be too time-consuming and probably drain too much energy from him if you try to have actual conversations right now, so you simply send him a feeling of warmth and gratitude.

“No… Need… Thanks… My… Duty…”

“Still, thank you for your services. May I ask one thing though, what’s your name?” You ask him. It takes a long time before you get a response. You get the feeling as if it has to think very hard about it. Finally you get an answer.

“Wooster.”

“Just Wooster? No first name?” You ask.

“Do… Not… Know…”

“Very well. Good night Wooster.” With that, you send every bit of psychic energy you have left in you to him and go to sleep.

It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s bitter. It’s pungent. It’s screeching.

Or not? It’s something similar yet all together different. The same sensation, a different sense.

----

You wake up feeling a bit groggy. Your alarm has been trying to wake you up for 15 minutes already it seems, and only just now managed. Strange, you’ve never had that before, yet at the same time you have an odd feeling that you always have.

You make your way to breakfast. No one seems to bat an eye about the fact that you’re 15 minutes later than usual.

Hmm, you make a good point. An indoors one might still be handy to have, but I'll leave it to the players on what to build. I simply make suggestions.
>>
>>39074706
Would an outside one require us to use silenced weaponry only? Regardless, an indoor shooting range would take up much useful space
>>
>>39074804
You still have several unused rooms (I think I might roll for that later or something). And no, no need for silenced weapons. The closest other house is a few kilometers away.
>>
>>39074804
it is a bit of a trade off. either we make the outside range in such a way that sound is reflected upwards by the use of ramps and making the location surrounded by trees (a lot of work) or we tear down some walls inside the mansion and soundproof the whole resulting area and on top of that make the walls bulletproof (a bit less work but way costlier because you don't want Liam to accidentally shoot us through a wall.

Goodnight and thanks OP!
