++

You'd expected to wake up because of nightmares. You were pleasantly surprised when you didn't- instead waking up to an insistent pair of small hands on your shoulder.

Last night had been... well, you don't really have words.

You and Rachel's first night together had been her first night with anyone- you'd been surprised when she'd admitted it to you, and at first, didn't believe it. It was only later, after you'd moved to the bedroom and lay there together in the afterglow, that she told you everything. About her family, how she was the only witch in generations- the first anyone could remember, even.

She'd told you about how she'd been expected to be perfect. Oh, she said, nothing overt, but subtle pressure. Go to church. Act like a lady. Get perfect grades, never curse.

She'd rebelled. She'd gotten her tattoos using a fake ID at 16, on a dare from a girl at the academy in her second year. She and Ice had, almost unbelievably, been hell raisers for most of their early days- it wasn't till Ice crashed a pair of training strikers that she started to buckle down and turn into the witch you've always known. Slider, for her part, had stuck by her friend, naturally adopting a sister-like role. It'd felt right, according to her.

You'd fallen asleep curled up together, one of her legs tangled up with yours, her arms around you and her head nuzzled in against your chest. It had been different than it was last night with Tabitha- but at the same time, you hadn't liked it any less. You could get used to this, you think.

1/2
>>
However, the girls- it has to be one of them- are insistent. “Papa.” Stasya says, her voice a whisper, but only just. “Papa, it's time to wake up.”

You don't move- maybe if you don't respond, they won't keep trying. That is, up until you get a knife hand in the midsection- not hard, but hard enough to wake you up. That had to have been Rachel.

“Papa, you need to wake up.” Stasya says, seeing you shift. “Lilya and Tabitha cooked breakfast and they say you have things to do.”

“We cooked eggs and bacon, papa.” Lilya confirms, sounding like she's next to her sister.

“Ugh.” You grunt, rolling over. “What time is it?”

“It's oh-eight, papa.” Stasya says. You open one eye to look at them- they're both dressed in BDUs, the short shorts of the witch uniform almost coming down to their knees. Clearly, they're borrowing someone's clothes.

“Five more minutes?” You ask, closing your eye again. Not happening, you think, as Stasya shakes you again.

“Papa.” She says, more insistent. “You have to get up. There's things for you to do.”

It occurs to me that if Konstantina wanted to defect to be with her beloved, her last chance is rapidly approaching, what with the Soviets using nukes to seal off their borders with the exception of that one narrow gap that Frank kept open.

[x] Well, I tried. Did they tell you what I need to do?

You sigh. “Well, I tried.” You say, defeated. “Did they tell you what I need to do?”

Stasya shakes her head as you extricate yourself from the bed, yawning and scratching idly at the scar tissue on your side. She and Lilya's eyes both get slightly wider when they see it, and they look at it for a second before they look back at you. “No, only that you needed to get up and go eat breakfast.”

You nod, yawning again before standing up and heading over to the closet. Given the girl's choice of attire, you're probably not on any kind of warning or alert- not that you could fly if you were. You're sure the crew is going to have to give the wyvern a pretty thorough looking-over before clearing it for flight, let alone combat.

Grabbing a pair of BDUs yourself, you take about five minutes to get dressed, trying to at least look presentable. You still need to shave, but other than that you make out ok, and the girls are waiting outside the door for you. They fall in behind you, while you stuff your cover into a thigh pocket and buckle on your watch.

“Morning, Frank.” Ice greets you when you walk into the kitchen, then looks at the girls, both of whom sit next to you while she brings over a plate. “Good work girls.”

Stasya looks at her kind of blankly, while Lilya smiles at the compliment.

“They tell you what all you've got to do today?” Ice asks, setting down the plate and motioning for Lilya to come help her.

You shake your head. “Nope, they just said they were told to come shake me loose.”

“Surprised they didn't need a crowbar.” Ice says with a smile.

You shrug, while Stasya looks up at you. “Papa, what does she mean?”

>>39919968
Bad luck, it's futa.
Then again, it's fatalpulse.
>>
“I'll tell you later.” You answer quickly, looking back at Ice. “So what's up?”

“Well, Merlin said she needed to talk to you, she's in the hangar.” She says. “That's the first thing. The second is that Admiral Nixon is on base, he wants to talk to you as soon as it's convenient for you. He said there's no rush, but you're not to go anywhere until you do talk to him.”

You nod, having expected to talk to someone pretty highly placed about yesterday.

“And you need to arrange travel to Berlin to debrief some more brass. And some other things.” She shrugs. “I'm not sure what, but the orders hit my desk at like, oh two, and it's coming from Belgium. Plus there's another letter that came in with it from London, the matron London requested our presence as soon as possible.” She says.

You sit back. “That it?”

“For now.” She answers. “I suggest you talk to Admiral Nixon, then see what Merlin wants, after that it's up to you. I'll get your travel pass cut as soon as I can, but it'll take at least half an hour.”

You check your watch- a totally unnecessary move, but you nod anyway. “No problem.”

[x] I'll talk to the Admiral first.

“Guess I'll go talk to Admiral Nixon first.” You say. “Where's he at?”

“Admin.” Ice answers. “Said he'd be there most of the morning. He'll probably be on post a few days.”

You nod, wondering at the sanity of that. If they're using nuclear weapons now, and they could not only kill the squadron, but also kill admiral Nixon, wouldn't that mean that this base is a prime target for them? You don't voice your concerns- partly because it won't do any good, and partly because there's no reason to scare the girls with it.

You finish your breakfast fairly quickly, standing up and putting your plate on the counter- and giving Tabitha a quick kiss. You could get used to that too.

The only hiccup is when Stasya starts to follow you- and Lilya doesn't. You and Stasya both pause at the door, while Lilya is clearly torn between following you and staying with Ice. “You staying here?” You ask. She hesitates, then nods. “Y-yes papa. If that's ok.”

You look at Ice, who nods. “It's fine with me.” She says, so you nod as well.

“That's fine Lilya, we'll be back later, ok?”

She nods and smiles, which is enough for you. Stasya, in the mean time, takes the unexpected opportunity to claim a piggy back ride across the base and on into the admin building.

The morning is unseasonably nice, with the skies a clear blue, just a few wisps of cloud up there. Chancing a look back to the east, it's the same- you didn't know what you thought you'd see, but whatever it is, it isn't there. Oddly, though, no aircraft are flying- everything seems to be on the ground, and the base is unusually quiet.

1/2
>>
>>39921122
I still doubt we have a specific contingency for invading Germany for their orphan resources, though I'm pretty sure we have a scenario for invading them anyway so it wouldn't be too hard to add in "Take their orphans"
>>
The admin building is fully staffed, and it doesn't take you long to find Admiral Nixon- Colonel Wilkins points you towards him, giving you a once over, but not saying anything. You suppose that's fair enough- you were awful close to ground zero, after all.

Nixon is occupying Ice's office, his small traveling staff taking up the outer office and making your own limited squadron staff look distinctly out of place. The door to Ice's office stands open, though, and you can see Nixon in there, looking up at the TV. He looks down long enough to see you and motion you in, seeming to not notice Stasya, who's still on your shoulders.

“Frank.” He says as you set your adopted daughter down and take a seat after saluting. “How ya feelin, son?”

“Not bad, sir.” You answer. Physically, you feel fine. Sore in a few places- but that's not really important to the conversation, especially since you know why you're sore, and it's got nothing to do with flight.

He nods. “Damn glad to hear it son. So what happened up there?”

[x] Crazy bastards decided to detonate their weapon after I shot them down. I think they were trying to take us with them, sir.

“Crazy bastards decided to light theirs off when they were going down, sir. I think they were trying to take us with them.” You say, trying to keep the snarl out of your voice.

Nixon looks at you for a moment, then nods. “It's possible, son. For what it's worth, it probably wasn't meant to kill you, we think it was meant to sever the road and rail link between Belaru- I mean, Poland, and the Soviet border.”

You nod- Wendy had told you as much.

“But that doesn't mean I don't agree, son. Hell, it makes sense. There was no way they were going to be able to complete their mission anyway, might as well take a stab at killing soviet enemy number one.” He says. “But I don't think I need to tell you what this has done with the higher-ups.”

“Chaos?” You venture. He nods.

“Exactly. The Germans and Poles are screaming that we can't trust the soviets and need to wipe them out- now, before they can do something really crazy like pull warheads from Megalith. The UNDF wants to go in with a hand-picked team and disable Megalith preemptively. Then there's this-”

>>
>>39922515
>>
He turns up the TV again, with the BBC droning in the background. On screen, you see Putin, flanked by that blonde witch- what was her name? Sofiya? Something like that- and a man you don't recognize- with translated text on the bottom. You watch for a second before Admiral Nixon mutes it again.

“It's a replay.” He says. “Your friend Putin, there, has come forward and declared the entire soviet leadership criminally insane. The USSR is tearing apart in a civil war right now, his guys versus the loyalists.”

“Sounds like it'll be messy, sir.” You venture.

He nods again. “Damn right it will be, son. The question is, do we get involved. Uncle Joe's already proven he's not scared to do things we thought nobody would ever do to other people. Imagine what would have happened if he'd dropped those bombs on the armored units.” He shudders for effect.

“Plus,” He says, looking back down at you. “I hear things about another VDNI witch?” He asks.

[x] Yessir. Stasya might be able to fill you in a bit more, though.

You nod. “Yessir, though Stasya might be able to fill you in a bit more.”

She, of course, doesn't say anything, instead looking up at you. You smile down at her. “You can trust the Admiral, Stasya. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't still be here.”

Nixon shrugs. “You'd probably still be hospitalized at pearl. But let's not dwell on that son. Bad voodoo, you hear?” He looks at Stasya. “So you're Stasya Bishop?”

She nods.

He gives her a grandfatherly smile. “I've heard a lot about you. We met once, in France, remember?”

She nods again.

“Well, miss Bishop, I can't order you to do anything.” He says, the smile still on his face. “I'm sure if I did, your dad would have some harsh words for me. But I'd like to hear about this Anya, if you could tell me. “

It's quiet in the room for a minute- you think Stasya's going to sit there without answering- but, just as you're about to say something, she starts talking.

“She was older than us.” She says, her voice quiet. She's still not sure about talking to other people, it seems like. “We're not sure where she was from, but she fought at first.”

Nixon looks over at you, and you shrug- this is the first you've heard of this too.

“How did she fight, do you know?” He asked.

Stasya scoots a bit closer to you, and you wrap a protective arm around her shoulder. “She refused to train with them, at first. She said they'd kidnapped us all, that what they were doing was evil and wrong.”

1/2
>>
“What did they do to her?” Nixon asks.

Stasya shakes her head. “I don't know. We only heard her screaming. We weren't allowed to know what happened to her, but she changed quickly. When she was reintroduced to us, she decided that we three were family, and she was our big sister.”

“Hmm.” Nixon says, then nods. “That's enough, miss Bishop, thank you very much.”

“So is that it?” You ask. He shakes his head. “Not quite, son. You know they want to see you in Berlin, right?”

You nod. “Yessir, Ice told me.”

“Good. I haven't got the report on your fighter yet, let's go see about that, then we can get you on a train for Berlin.”

First off, here's the full resolution. Sorry, but it's jpg. Can't fit a 5000 pixel image into 4mb otherwise.

Sadly since I'm currently slowly dying to finals (Why the fuck did they schedule one for 8am tomorrow), I didn't have time to actually finish the Slider la Slider OP.
I have yet to draw in the debris from the Nosterafu she's blowing up, or work on her Strikers more, or add more to the background. I managed to get a few F-22's, the Pak-50, and the Dreadnaut in the back being blown up by Frank and Merlin in the Wyvern (Tesla cannon) done, but there was supposed to be other stuff as well.

[x] Well, sir, I was supposed to go see my RIO.

“Well, sir, I was supposed to go see my RIO.” You say. “Probably about that.”

He pauses, then nods. “Probably. You think they don't have one ready yet?”

You shrug. “Well, sir, I'm not sure, but unless they were up all night just doing diagnostics, they probably won't even have preliminary damage for you, other than what was in my debreif paperwork.”

“Makes sense. Alright son, go get that taken care of, I'll get a copy from your boss.” He says, turning up the TV again. “And do me a favor, if you see Matron Longstreet, you mind sending her up here?”

“She's here?” You ask.

He nods. “Yeah, I tapped her as my staff witch. O'hare's got Annapolis now. Anyway, son, that's it, if you need me, I'll be here.”

“Aye, sir.” You say, standing up. Stasya bounces to her feet almost immediately.

“Don't rush it for my sake, son.” He says, laughing. “I'll be here a while, have to talk with Commander Laroux.”

“She's here too?” You ask again, stopping at the door.

He nods. “She's on the way, anyway, with her team. I need boots on the ground. Now go see your RIO.”

“Aye, sir.” You say, shutting the door behind you and heading out of admin- you get more than a few glances your way from Nixon's staff on the way out, but none of them say anything.

The walk to the hangar isn't bad- it's warming up some, and you can hear the crews working on aircraft out on the apron, most of the fleet needing maintenance and repair after yesterday. Inside your hangar, it's the same story- one of your wyvern's massive turbine engines is being removed from it's bay, while a replacement sits nearby, still covered in it's protective shipping container.

1/2
>>
Your crew chief sees you first, and wipes his hands off on his pants before saluting. You return it, looking up at the overhead crane. “That bad?” You ask.

“Wha- oh.” He shakes his head. “Naw. Well, kinda. They were nearing the end of their lifespan anyway, the real high performance ones like that are only good for a couple hundred hours, less with mil power like you run 'em in. We're sending those back to pratt and we're putting in the replacements. Plus you ingested a buncha small debris when you were outrunning that shockwave.”

“What else needs replaced?” You ask.

He laughs. “Just about damn near everything, sir. Just about everything but the flight computers are toast. The computers seem to check out, Lieutenant Wells is up there right now plugged in, giving them a once-over.”

You look up- you can just barely make out Merlin's helmeted head, down in the cockpit.

“How long she been up there?” You ask. He shrugs.

“Bout, what? Ten-fifteen minutes, I guess. Want me to get her down?”

[x] Nah, I'll just go up there.

You shake your head and indicate the rolling stairs next to the fighter. “Nah, I'll just go up there.” You say, starting towards it. The chief nods.

“Sure thing. You may need to knock on her helmet, she kinda zones out up there.” He says. “It's either that or get on one of the radios down here and get her attention that way.”

You nod, starting up the ladder- Stasya follows you up, looking down into the front seat when you reach the top. Pausing for a second, you make sure the VDNI uplink is disabled with the manual toggle, then pick her up and set her down in your ejection seat- she can barely see over the instrument panel. She looks around a bit, then looks up at you.

Meanwhile, you move back alongside the rear part of the cockpit. Merlin hasn't noticed you yet, her head down, looking at a clipboard that's set on her lap.

“Heya kiddo.” You greet- she doesn't look up. You rap your knuckles on her helmet a couple times gently- that gets her attention. She looks up with an odd swiveling motion- getting used to the VDNI cable embedded in her helmet, you guess, and distantly wonder if you do the same thing, now.

“Frank!” She says, though she doesn't try to get out of the cockpit. Instead, she motions for you to lean closer, then hugs you. “I didn't know you were here!”

You nod, looking back down the length of your fighter. “So what's the damage?”

“It's not as bad as I was afraid it was going to be.” She says. “There's a lot of damage, especially on our external systems, a lot of the sensors are gone, and the tailbooms are fried, we'll have to get them replaced.” She shrugs. “I was going to replace them anyway, we don't need a lot of those sensors anyway.”

Fate Stay/Night is a Visual Novel with 3 routes, 5 endings between them and like low 40s bad endings. That spoiler is from a bad end.
The old anime from DEEN is the first route with shit from the other routes slapdashed into it badly. It's shit.
The DEEN UBW movie is the second route chopped to pieces to fit into 2 hours. Even further beyond, Super Shit 3.
Fate Zero was a prequel novel that got adapted into the ufotable anime. Bretty gud
New UBW anime is by the guys that did the Fate Zero anime. It's got some new stuff mixed in but the medium means you do miss out on some of the internal shit from Shirou's perspective.
Shirou is just as fucked in the head in Fate as he is in UBW, he just gets away with it because Fate is the more happy fantasy route where shit doesn't hit the fan as much and him and Saber pull each other through it. UBW is where shit gets real and his survivor's guilt,no sense of self, saving people is the only thing that matters mindset really gets challenged.

[x] What were you going to replace them with?

“So what were you going to replace them with?” You ask, noting that she covers her clipboard rather quickly, leaning over it.

“Well, uh.” She says, hurriedly. “There's a couple things I could do. If it's ok with you.”

You nod, and motion for her to continue, while shifting to get a better look at her clipboard- looks like a regular checklist with some doodles and a paragraph or three written on the margins. Merlin, you note, has tiny, precise handwriting.

She moves the clipboard off to her other side. “Well, I could have them install an antimissile system.” She says. “It's really experimental, they're designed for strikers. They don't have much range, but the focusing crystals we could use on the jet would be two or three times as big as the ones they can get on strikers. It'd protect us against almost any missile, and it'd even make a good short range weapon against witches.”

“So what's the catch?” You ask.

“I can't generate a shield with it active.” She says. “And it takes a minute or two to switch between the two. But with it we can shoot down even the big SAMs if we need to, and it's got enough range that we can protect witches or fighters close to us.”

“So what's the other options?”

“Well, we can reinstall the sensors, or use the space to install additional ECM equipment. Or we can put in something else I've been working on...” She pauses, pulling up the clipboard and leafing through the pages till she finds the one she's after and holds it up.

“I can install this.” She says.

You narrow your eyes- the page is a mess of magical formulas, technical drawings, and a lot of things that fly way over your head.

“So the martians never did have the same weapons as us.” She says. “Their rocket technology was better than ours, and we still haven't gotten masers quite right without a witch.”

“So what's this?” you ask.

“Well, it's.” She pauses. “Have you ever seen Macross?”

You shake your head.

“Ok, it's like the ADMM system they built for us, remember that?”

This time you nod. “Buncha little missiles?”

She nods. “Mhmm. This would be a built in version of that. Only enough room for one salvo, and it would only be about three quarters as big as a ADMM salvo, but it's still a lot of extra firepower.”

She pulls the clipboard back down, the looks up at you. “So what do you think we should do, Frank?”

While I don't like that the trade off is no shields, I'd rather have something to counter S-300's and the fact that we can cover other fighters or witches with it is a plus. As for the missiles, we can already carry a shit load if we need to.

There's the hitch. There are a million different ways to shoot down even super-maneuverable planes that would take a fraction of the cost of a missile massacre with the same efficacy. And would be good for MORE than a single shot.

It's just pointlessly flashy and wasteful for air-to-air combat.

[x] Install additional ECM and countermeasures

You think it over for a second, then shake your head. “As much as I trust you, I think we should just go with the additional ECM capability.” You say. “The AMS sounds great, but if we can act like a prowler, that'd be just as useful, in a way.”

She nods. “Kind of. Well, we'd be about even up with a prowler, I'm really good with electronics. Ok, Frank. We'll do that!” She turns back to her clipboard, then hides it again.

“So what's on the clipboard?” You ask, trying to look past her.

She blushes and squeaks. “NOTHING!” She says.

You lean back, grinning. “Uh huh. Was it for Kenji?”

You didn't think it was possible for her to blush harder- you're wrong. “No! It's not for kenji.”

“Oho! You playin the poor boy?” You ask.

“No! Fraaaaaaank! Stop teasing me!” She whines, protesting.

You laugh. “Ok, ok. So how long till we can fly again?”

She takes a second to calm down. “A couple days.” She says, still a little red around the cheeks. “We'll have to replace a lot of the systems anyway, plus the overhaul with the turbines and repair of the damage on the rear.”

You nod, reaching down to collect Stasya and lift her out of the cockpit. “Ok. Ice told you I had to head west for a bit?”

She nods. “Berlin, right?”

“Yeah. Just a day or two, it sounded like.”

“Who's going with you?”

Stasya looks over at you too, an odd look in her eye. “I'd... like to go there, papa. Lilya might want to go too.”

[x] We'll talk to Tabitha when we go back to get our travel orders.

You nod, reaching down to pat her head- she frowns faintly as she's forced to readjust her beret. “We'll talk to Tabitha when we go back to get our travel orders.” You say, which seems to be good enough for her- she nods.

“Ok, Merlin. We're headed back to the house. You'll be ok here?” You ask, looking back at her.

“Mhmm.” She affirms, nodding. “I'll take care of everything here, don't worry.” She says.

You take that as a dismissal- she turns back to her work, and Stasya takes your hand and kind of leads the way out- as insistant as she ever gets.

“You want to see Berlin?” You ask, kind of curious.

She hesitates before nodding. “Yes, Papa.”

“Why?” You ask. “It's not like Paris or London, you know. Not as tourist friendly.”

She scrunches up her face, thinking. “I don't know, papa. I just feel like I should. Is that bad? I'm sorry papa. You don't have to take me with you if you don't want to.”

“Well, I don't know if I can.” You say. “But if I can, we can talk about it, ok?”

She nods again. “Thank you papa.”

The rest of the walk back is in silence- the base is waking up, and you can hear all the sounds of a modern military post, but neither you nor Stasya talk, comfortable to walk together in silence. It gives you time to think about how downright strange your situation is- and how strange it makes the girl's situation. At least you have the small comfort that Lilya seems to like Ice.

“Welcome back, Frank, Stasya.” Ice says, as the two of you walk in the living room- she's in there with Lilya, watching what looks to be old episodes of Baa Baa Black Sheep.

You sit down next to her. “So, about those travel orders.” You say, leaning over to kiss her cheek. “Hey Lilya. You and Ice doing ok?”

Lilya nods. “Yes papa.” She says. “We've been watching TV. I never knew there were so many things to watch!”

1/2
>>
You laugh, taking the travel slip from Ice. “Gotta watch it though, too much TV will rot your brain.”

She looks at you, her eyes wide. “Really?”

You laugh, and shake your head- they do take things too literally sometimes. “No, but it's not good for you. You should read some, I have a bunch of books if you want.”

She looks at Stasya, and they both look back at you. “You can read for enjoyment?”

You share a look with Ice- you know, for a fact, she does.

“Of course. Not everything is technical manuals and briefings.” You say.

“I've got some books you can read, Lilya.” Ice says. “They're kind of old, but they're good books.”

The four of you sit there for a minute, Stasya taking up a place wedged half on your lap and half in the narrow space between you and the armrest. “Papa.” She says, after a minute.

“Oh, right. Sorry. Ice, d'ya mind if Stasya comes with me to Berlin?” You ask. Lilya's head whips around at that, and you nod at her. “And Lilya too, if she wants.” Lilya nods.

Ice gives you a glance that asks 'are you sure you know what you're doing?'- she knows the girl's potential history as well as you do. Assuming they are who everyone thinks they are.

She shrugs. “If they want to come, sure. You'll have to share rooms, there's not that much space at the VOQ, even for the great hero, Frank Bishop.” She says, after a second. “I'll cut their travel papers, go help them pack.”

You sigh and stand up as Stasya hops off her perch and starts tugging on your wrist. Ice smiles at you. “Have fun! Tell Katya I said hi when you get there!”

The three of you pause and look back at Ice. If anything, her grin gets wider.

For some reason, you feel like you just walked into a bear trap. It's not a pleasant feeling.
>>
And that's it for the night!

I'd kind of wanted to do all the things in this thread, but it would have rapidly gotten way too big for one thread regardless- I kept adding running notes, haha! Better to call it here and give the trip to Berlin it's own time.

Anyway, no real other news for you guys. Suppose I'll see some of you in the next PJW and KCQ runs though!

And of course, we'll be back next week at the regular time for the next run! Till then, gents, cheers!

Oh, of course not!
... Here goes then.

“DRILL COMPLETE, DRILL COMPLETE. ALL HANDS APART FROM FLIGHT DECK PERSONNEL STAND DOWN FROM GENERAL QUARTERS...” The intercom was still blaring the stand down order as the last Shinden II slowly taxied its way to the fore of the superstructure—the only part of the deck that wasn’t crowded by the F-14’s. Yellowshirts and greenshirts were still scurrying about, assisting disembarking pilots on one side, helping witches out of their strikers on the other. Plane handlers gave the landed planes a look over for possible structural problems before they go belowdecks. It was, overall, a very hectic scene post-drill, nothing out of ordinary for the crew of the CVN-99 Asuka II.

Lieutenant-Commander Makoto Tsukishiro straightened her service jacket as she rose from her seat on the bridge. She was a symbol of immaculate uniform protocol as usual; her dress pants showed no sign of creasing even after an extended sitting period, her service jacket was spotless, her hair neatly tied in a bun under her command ball cap. She took out and briefly glanced at her pocket watch. “Three minutes faster than our previous record, sir.” She gestures to the air officer, who hands her a clipboard. Scanning over it, she adds, “I daresay our deployment times for case 3 launches have been cut in half.”

Rear Admiral Kazuhiko Aikawa regarded the situation, sighing as he stood up from the skipper’s seat. He was not the image of a typical admiral, however. His bushy hair needed combing, his tunic’s upper buttons were undone, and his pants looked like they had not been washed for a month. Add that to the fact that he looked way older than his age, and he could be mistaken for a character from that western sitcom they called ‘Dad’s Army,’ instead of an actual rear admiral in His Imperial Majesty’s Navy. Fixing his command ball cap on, he muttered, “Quite true, quite true.” Then he gave a low, mirthful chuckle, catching the attention of his executive officer. “Still, record times for deployment won’t mean much if our witches don’t focus on keeping their recovery times short.” He glanced over to Tsukishiro, her back turned to the admiral; her ears visibly reddened, clearly showing her embarrassment for making a hasty judgment, a rare thing with an otherwise experienced young lady.

“Indeed, sir. That must be looked into,” Makoto finally replied, clearing her throat. Aikawa chuckled to himself at the gesture, obviously entertained by the rare chance to catch the disciplined Four-Eyed Demon of Chiba off-guard. Fixing her glasses, Makoto added, “I will personally handle the inquiry and have the offending parties—”
>>
>>39928794
“That won’t be necessary, Lieutenant-Commander Tsukishiro,” came the abrupt reply from Aikawa, more forcefully than normal. The admiral paused, noticing that now every eye on the rather spacey bridge was focused on him. Putting on a more relaxed tone, he said, “I’ll be the one to take care of that. Have the wing leader and her new witches report to my stateroom for debriefing. I’ll leave the flattop in your able hands for now.” As he makes his way to the hatch, he realized he forgot something, and adds, “Attention, Commander Tsukishiro has the deck and conn,” before heading out.

Makoto began to protest. “Rear Admiral, that’s not—” Turning to see that the admiral has already left, she shook her head before stating, “Attention everyone, this is Commander Tsukishiro, I have the deck and the conn.” Makoto sighed—for someone who has been an admiral for more than a year, ‘Crimson Lightning’ Aikawa was still gleefully ignoring flag officer protocol and etiquette. Fixing her hair bun, she whispered to herself, “Seriously, Admiral Aikawa…”
>>
>>39928810
THE RED-HAIRED WITCH slightly unzipped her heavily worn flight jacket as she led her little party through the passageway leading to the admiral’s stateroom. Her flight goggles were lazily slung on her neck, partly obscuring the scarlet collar she was also wearing. She didn’t even bother to fix her frazzled, hip-length hair. She felt rather annoyed at the sudden summons, and she made her dissatisfaction apparent to anyone within hearing distance. “Man, and I was getting ready to take a bath even! What could the old geezer want now?” Lieutenant-Commander Kurumi Tamaki emphasized her point by brandishing her towel in the air. “I’ll give him a piece of my mind once I get a chance…”

“The admiral sounds like a boring old man, Commander Tamaki,” Ensign Mitsuki Ichimonji opined, acting indifferent to her superior officer’s gripes. She tugged at her uniform—a standard-issue white shirt with its sleeves removed by Ichimonji herself, a matching black tie, and a skimpy red skirt—in a lazy attempt of fixing herself up. She didn’t try to fix her hip-length silver-white hair, however. Placing her arms behind her head, she added, “Maybe we can just slip off to the galley while he’s giving us a debriefing. What do you think, Nana?”

For her part, Ensign Nanami Kaede merely looked blankly at her companion, then to their still ranting wing commander, before wordlessly going back to poring over her personal copy of ‘Anne of the Island’. Her attire—a white shirt with the sleeves intact, a ribbon with a red gem as a centerpiece, and a purplish skirt—would feel out of place in a fighting ship if it wasn’t for the “4th Experimental Operations and Evaluation Flotilla” and “Seabats Air Wing” patches on the sleeves. Her hip-length white hair was also very well-kempt, belying the fact that she just came from a launch and recovery drill that lasted for hours.
>>
>>39928695
>“Have fun! Tell Katya I said hi when you get there!”
I feel like there should be a "Just as Planned" label under here.
>>
>>39928827
“You’re being no fun again, Nana,” Mitsuki exclaimed, exasperated. Seeing no other recourse, she turned to Tamaki. “Commander, are we there yet? My legs are going numb…”

Tamaki snapped out of her tirade at the question and, in a rather matter-of-fact tone, pointed out, “Yeah, yeah, we’re here… second hatch to the right.” Leading her younger charges in, she instantly espied the admiral at his desk, working on what appeared to be a Zeon capital ship… again. “Geez, I bet you already have a full fleet of those toys, old man…” the redhead witch whined, shaking her head.

“Good, you’re here. Ensign… Kaede, was it? Please dog down the hatch,” Aikawa replied without looking up. He was putting the finishing touches on the ship’s superstructure, making the minutest movements to make sure he doesn’t break anything. He triumphantly looked up to the three witches, only to see an unamused Tamaki, her crimson eyes ablaze, her arms crossed and the expression ‘Are you fucking kidding me right now’ written clearly on her face. With a bemused tone, the admiral exclaimed, “Ara, ara…”

“Don’t ARA ARA me, you senile seadog,” Tamaki snapped, visibly annoyed. “You call us in, fresh off a damned drill that, I may add, is JUST THE SAME DAMN ROUTINE FOR THE PAST THREE WEEKS, and me, expecting to get something important done because it’s a debrief from the admiral himself, goes here straight away with my newest witches as ordered. And then THIS IS WHAT I GET?!” putting a palm on her forehead, she exclaimed, “Come on girls, this farce is over…”
>>
>>39928833
“That kind of impatience will get you killed, Commander Tamaki,” Aikawa stated, his tone suddenly serious and foreboding. All three witches actually snapped to attention at that. “If I wanted to play around I’d do it with more elaborate methods, see. Also, this isn’t a toy, this is a model kit.” Tamaki didn’t respond. Taking this as his cue, the admiral continued. “I’ve been observing your wing’s performance for the past three weeks since these two girls arrived and, to be honest, there have been some… discrepancies.” Shuffling through a folder, he added, “The steelwings under your command seem to be doing just fine, but your witches’ recovery times have been suffering from extended periods in the air.” Aikawa tapped the folder with the back of his palm before continuing. “I think I already know the cause for this, but I’ll hold off until you can explain your side.”

Feeling resigned to her fate, Tamaki began, “To be honest, my wing’s feeling very, very restless. It’s not just the witches; even my steelwing pilots are getting impatient.” She sighed, before adding, “It’s been a month since the push into Korea, old man. My boys and girls are itching for a fight. We’ve been put into this ‘strategic evaluation reserve’ for far too long. We’ve taken the time for drill sorties to do gunnery and maneuvers practice without permission, but only with select groups at a time.” She puffed with smug almost imperceptibly, but only the yawning Ichimonji didn’t notice. “I planned the setup myself so that the steelwings wouldn’t be under suspicion! My witches would have gotten away with the arrangement too…” Another pause. “If only the others would cooperate…”
>>
>>39928849
Aikawa took every word in, carefully weighing his response. After what almost amounted to minutes, he finally spoke. “For the record, I’ll have to punish the entire air wing for undertaking direct combat exercises without the explicit approval of higher command.” He pulled out a notepad, scanning it before continuing. “As you know, our current stated mission is to act as an evaluation and test unit. Direct combat training may come, but for now, it is beyond our jurisdiction.” He turned his attention to the younger witches. “As for you two, I’ll have to ground you indefinitely.”

“Wait, what??” Ichimonji exclaimed, giving the admiral a look of utter disbelief, while Kaede was still staring, her almost golden eyes seemingly lifeless and empty. The perkier Ichimonji was furious. “All due respect, Admiral, but we’ve already become a part of this unit! Grounding us now would—“

Aikawa drew a breath, before cutting off Ichimonji’s tirade. “I already know you two are having a hard time adjusting. Hell, with the exception of your wing leader and vice-leader, you’d probably be excluded from anything the pilots and other witches would do.” No response. “Look, I don’t really understand how you witches do it, or if it’s even witch-related, but if what I’m sensing is true, then the entire unit’s pretty much scared of you two.” He winced internally at that. ‘Sense?’ Sounded like some Newtype bullshit to him. “We’re grounding you to help you ease in with the rest of the wing. Think of this grounding as a free pass to catch up on your shooting skills without having to ask permission.” Noticing Kaede’s book, Aikawa added, “Also, the ship’s library just got some new arrivals. I think Daddy-Long-Legs and Jo’s Boys are part of that shipment…” sure enough, the stoic Kaede’s eyes grew wide, though only for a moment. Bingo.
>>
>>39928868
Ichimonji still looked unsatisfied with the arrangement, so the admiral was forced to pull his trump card. “I tell you what, Ensign Ichimonji. I wager I can beat you at 500 meters with a type 89.”

Ichimonji’s auburn eyes perked up. Thank goodness he remembered that dossier, Aikawa thought. “Admiral, are you—”

“Yes, kid, I’m challenging you. No magic. Iron sights only.” The admiral grinned mischievously. “In fact, let’s put a bet on it. If you beat me, I’ll cut your grounding short, and I’ll throw in a pint of ice cream for both of you. I beat you… well, we’ll decide on that later.”

“A gallon. Make it a gallon and we’re good,” Ichimonji replied, excitement evident in her voice.

“You’re on. See you on the range before the first dog watch this Saturday.” To emphasize the point, Aikawa held out his hand. The witch shook it, sealing the deal.

“Alright, now that’s done, any further questions?” the admiral said. Quickly, Tamaki replied, “You kind of forgot to say what the wing’s punishment was, gramps.”

Aikawa cleared his throat before replying. “The punishment will be… No movie night for the next three weeks. And especially no reruns of Yojimbo.”

Tamaki looked at the admiral like he was deranged. “Wha—”

“Look here, Tamaki,” said Aikawa abruptly, genuinely exasperated. “Just be thankful I’m letting you off easy here. If I’d let the executive officer decide, your steelwing drivers will be swabbing the flight line with their tongues for two weeks straight while you and your witches will replace the nuclear reactor as the ship’s power source… indefinitely.”
>>
>>39928880
The redhead was visibly shaken at the thought. Conceding her defeat, Tamaki muttered, “Fine, old man, have it your way.” Turning to her charges, she asked, “How about you two, you got anything?”

Kaede shook her head. Ichimonji, on the other hand, exclaimed, “You’re actually pretty interesting, Rear Admiral!” Turning to Tamaki, she added, “Can we go now? I’m feeling reaaaaally hungry.”

The admiral chuckled at the gesture. Witch or no, they were still kids, after all. “All right, I guess that will be all.” He stood up before adding, “Good work, I suppose. Dismissed.”

The witches saluted, but Tamaki had one last thing to say before they left. “Don’t expect me to owe you for this, old man. You still owe me one, remember that.”

Aikawa looked on without comment as the girls left. Now that his ‘debriefing’ was done, he had nothing else to do. He could go back to the bridge, but he wasn’t feeling up to taking the conn back so soon. He could go to the hangar and try a hand at the newer fighter planes, but Tsukishiro might chew him out again for ‘acting out of line’…

“Kumi’s brash as usual, eh?”

…Or he could go and waste time making idle chatter with this pilot here. The admiral and Lieutenant Senior Grade Nozomi Sanada have known each other since they were kids; whereas Tsukishiro was his ‘etiquette compass’ who kept him acting like an actual ship skipper, Sanada was his ‘impulse control’, or lack thereof. She was never one to follow regulations as was evident in the way she wore her flight suit; the upper section was wrapped around her waist, revealing her black tank top and well-toned upper body. A scar tore across her left cheek, a reminder of her days as a striker witch. Her shoulder-length hair was messy at the edges after a rushed haircut. She was wearing those dog tags as usual, a memento from an old friend.
>>
>>39928893
Fate always had a way of putting the two of them together despite being separated multiple times, like when Nozomi joined the witch corps and again when she transferred to helicopters. Aikawa had a name for it: Survivors’ Bond. It was something about some higher power putting together people who had been through the worst for some reason, he said.

“Brash indeed, Nozomi,” Aikawa sighed. He added, “Just like her mother.”

Sanada went in to Aikawa’s room and actually bopped her old friend on the head. “For the last time, Kazu, it wasn’t your fault.” She lit up a cigarette, taking a long drag before adding, “If you’re gonna end up like a sorry puddle of tears again, I swear to god I’ll burn your eyes out with my cigarette. And THEN you’ll feel sorry, idiot.”

The (relatively) young admiral broke into a weak smile. That was typical of Sanada; she was blunt at times but she genuinely cared for people. “Thanks, though you could’ve at least dropped the idiot part. I got an earful of that from my niece already.” The Seahawk driver stuck her tongue at him. Talk about immature. “So what brings you to my humble abode? I don’t remember CSAR crew being fond of this part of the ship.”

Sanada took a seat, putting her legs up on the admiral’s desk. Taking in another drag, she stated, “You can feel it too, can’t you, Kazu?”

Aikawa was genuinely confused. “I don’t understand…”

“Those two girls…” the chopper driver interrupted. “You can feel the darkness around them, can’t you?”
