A month has now passed since you began your training as a Kind’s Ranger at Highspire Castle and you’ve learned quite a bit. You have shown to be the promising recruit, rising to the top and regarded by many of your peers as candidate for a leading ranger position.

Also, during this time, winter has arrived in full force.The air is chilled and snow covers the land. The Stranger said he would contact you sometime after you arrived at Highspire Castle but you have yet to hear from him. Hopefully he will show up soon.

Congratulations! You’ve leveled up!

>Ranger basic training has given you a permanent +5 to both martial weapon attack rolls and archery rolls as well!
>You’ve also learned a basic spell in the meantime! Ranger’s Focus Basic Spell unlocked! Can only be used once a day at the moment but can be used more times as you level up! Ranger’s Focus adds +5 to all attack rolls and gives you temporary farsight vision that you can use, farsight vision gives you the eyes of a hawk and comes in handy when scouting!

One week into your training you were given the option to specialize your skill sets, choose only one of the following skills:
>Ranger’s Tracking: gives you greater insight on tracking and identifying creatures and enemies by the trails they leave behind as well as being able to better conceal your own tracks.
>First aid training: gives you knowledge of creating medicines from natural herbs as well as being able to identify said herbs and learning a basic heal spell that you can use once a day.
>Ranger’s Animal handling: gives you greater ability to tame and train wild creatures to your will, you can only have one animal companion at a time.

You wake up in your room at dawn and take a look outside through your window. Snow gently falls as the sky brightens up from the sun. It looks to be a nice winter’s day today, it is also the first day that you don’t have training. In fact you and the other recruits got the day off to do as you please. You get dressed and groom yourself before heading out the door. Once in the hallway you knock on Trista’s door but there is no response, she must have already gone and headed to breakfast. You shrug and make your way to the dining hall.

You make your way inside the bustling dining hall, its teeming with rangers as they grab breakfast and make their way to their daily duties. Inside you find Trista sitting with her group of female friends, Rose and Elizabeth included. But you also spot Havard, who became your sparring buddy and closest male friend during training, he seems to be sitting alone. Sariel and Robert are also in the dining hall too, they are at the other end of the room.

You decide to invite Havard to eat with you at Trista’s table. You walk over to Havard and pat him on the shoulder saying. “What are you eating by yourself for Havard? You some sort of recluse or what?”

Havard chuckles and responds. “Very funny Randal, but no one else that I knew arrived yet so I just sat down and started eating. Good morning by the way.”

“Good morning to you too, now get up and come eat with me and Trista and her friends.”

“What? You mean with her and all her girl friends?”

“Yes Havard, who else would it be?”

“Well its just that I don’t really talk to women much.”

“Don’t worry it’ll be fine now come eat with us.”

Havard hesitantly agree and you both walk over to Trista’s table and take a seat. You sit yourself beside Trista with a kiss and Havard awkwardly takes the open seat by Elizabeth.

“Good morning Randal,” Trista greets. Elizabeth, Rose, and the other girls greet you as well.

“Good morning Trista,” you say, then turning to the rest of the table, “Ladies.”

“So who is your friend here? He looks familiar.” Asks Elizabeth. “He’s quite handsome.” She adds.

Havard remains silent and begins eating, not looking up from his plate.

“This is my good friend Havard, he’s one of my closest friends here and a good sparring partner. Havard this is Trista, Elizabeth, Rose...” you continue naming off the girls and introducing them to Havard.

“Uh hello, my name is Havard Evenwood, its nice to meet all of you.”

After introductions you all begin eating and making small talk, but Havard still remains largely silent and only speak when Elizabeth tries to make conversation with him.

You decide its best if you get Havard to loosen up around the girls, so you decide to ask him about sparring.

“So Havard, how have your sparring matches been going lately?” You ask.

Havard perks up at the question and begins speaking. “Pretty well actually, haven’t lost a match since I fought you a few days ago, it seems you’re the only one I can’t beat.”

Elizabeth takes note on what Havard says and chimes in. “So you’re a pretty good fighter then Havard?”

“Well I guess I’m pretty good,but not as good as Randal.” He says with a shrug. “I just can’t seem to beat him. Hahahah.”

“So humble, and handsome. Tell me Havard where are you from?”

Havard blushes slightly at Elizabeth’s compliment but he continues speaking. “Well I’m from Pearlrock Port, to the southeast by Whitestar’s border with the Elven kingdom. I hail from the lower noble house of Evenwood.”

Elizabeth and Havard seem to hit it off really well and they continue to talk throughout the rest of breakfast.

“Nice save there for your friend.” Trista whispers. You smile, it looks like all Havard needed was a push in the right direction.

After about half an hour you all finish breakfast and walk out of the dining hall. Havard heads to the training grounds with Elizabeth, promising to show her some of his combat tricks and moves. Rose and the other girls decide to go and take their baths at the bathhouse, and Trista heads back to her room to catch up on some reading. Leaving you to do as you please. You all have the day off so there is a lot you can do at the moment.

You decide to explore the castle, after all you haven’t really seen much of it due to all of your training for the past month. The only places you’ve really been to are the easily accessable places like the library, chapel, bathhouse and so on. However you did notice that one of the many towers in the castle, to be exact the easternmost tower is hardly ever used. In fact you don’t think you’ve ever seen anyone come in or out of there. Not to mention that there are no guards standing outside of it. You decide that will be the best place to start exploring.

You make your way to the East tower, the courtyard that surrounds it is utterly empty and there is no noise except for the cold winter breeze. You shrug it off and step inside though the large wooden door. Inside it is completely dark except for the light coming through the windows. The air is filled with dust and from what you can make out the ground floor is a very large room with a stone floor and is completely devoid any furniture, all you can see is a staircase heading up on one side of the room and a staircase heading down on the other side of the room. There is also an abundance of cobwebs hanging from the ceiling.

Before you can decide on which route to take you swear you hear footsteps coming from the floor above you. You quickly make your way to the ascending stairs but as you do you hear what sounds like an inhuman moan coming from the descending stairs.

You decide to instead make your way downstairs to investigate that inhuman moaning sound. You begin your descent down the stone steps with your hand on the wall, since there is no light to guide your path. Your footsteps echo against the stone walls as you make your way down, after a minute or two of going down the stairwell you spot a dim light coming from downstairs. You quickly but quietly make your way to the bottom and arrive at a short hallway. At the end of the hallway is a torch mounted on the wall, you walk up to it and pull it out of the mount. you look both way of the new hallway you just entered, yu see it dead end on your left so there is only one other way to go.

You make your way to the right end of the hallway and head down it. This hallway is long and murky and the air has gotten very cold. After walking down the hallway for a few minutes you come to a large iron door. You open it and step inside a large room. Once you step inside the room and close the door behind you, you hear a click, you look at the ground you’re on and it seems you activated a pressure plate . You look up and see the room light up one torch at a time. But using the word room is and understatement. This place is massive, no you know why that staircase took so long to go down. You look around and see coffins and stone sarcophagi on the walls and at the center of the room is a large stone altar draped with a green silk cloth. Unlike the room upstairs, this place looks to be pretty clean, for a tomb that is.

You walk up to the stone altar at the center of the room, on top if it is what looks like a wooden pedestal for a tome of some sorts but that’s it.
“What is this place?” You mutter to yourself.

“A tomb for Rangers long dead,” a familiar voice calls out from behind you.

Your instincts kick in and you jump and turn around drawing your sword. However when you turn you see a familiar sight. A man whose scarred face is shrouded by a leather hood and wearing leather armor. Its The Stranger.

“Is that a way to greet me after all this time?” He responds calmly

“I told you over a month ago that I’d contact you after you joined the King’s Rangers. I am a man of my word, and how I got here isn’t important right now. As to how I managed to sneak up behind you...its a secret. Heheheh.”

“I see, well at least you finally decided to show up, I was wondering when I’d see you again.”

“Sorry if I was late by your standards but there were other pressing matters I had to attend to around the kingdom. Which is why I’m here, we have a problem.”

“And what is that?”

“The barbarians are starting to move around along the borders, more so than they have in the past six years, and its starting to worry me and the rest in my order.”

“I see, and how did you come about this information?”

“By tracking and spying on them, that and interrogation of course.”

“So then you’ve discovered what they are up too?”

“No unfortunately, the barbarians prove to be extremely loyal, even under threat of death. But I know they are up to something big. I’ve found several barbarian scouting parties along the border, and that isn’t a good sign of things to come.”

“So what are we going to do?” You ask. “Why are you here to meet me?”

“That is why I’m here, I have a task for you. One that needs to be done.”

“And what task is that?”

“You’re going to be doing some scouting of your own, you’ll be going beyond the border and finding out just what those barbarians are up too.”
