You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force!

Currently, you were sitting in the back of a UN V-22 Osprey as it sped towards the irradiated Ukrainian border with Russia to answer a distress call. Already, you were intercepted by Russian fighters, which Laika had managed to chase away. It was clear that the Russians didn't want anybody coming near the place.

Meanwhile, the ejected Russian pilot from the Flanker Laika shot down was sitting in one of the seats, securely tied up and kept under guard by Hoskins and Rex.

"We'll be at our designed LZ in five minutes!" Bullseye calls out. "Get ready!"

While you would have liked to interrogate the pilot, you simply did not have the time. You were already near the LZ and had to prepare. You quickly go over your gear, making sure everything was present and accounted for.

"Hey, what the heck is this stuff?" Red asks, pointing to some near gear you had brought with you.

"Weren't you paying attention in NBC training?" You sigh as you point. "That big thing there is a geiger counter. Measures the amount of radiation in the area."

"And...?"

"Jesus, Red." You shake your head. "Basically, the more clicking sound it makes, the more radiation there is. I shouldn't have to tell you that more radiation is bad."

"Okay. Clicking is bad. Got it." Red nods and picks up a small white badge. "And what is this?"

"That's a radiation badge." You continue your instruction. "Basically, once it absorbs a certain amount of radiation, say like, the human body's maximum radiation tolerance, it turns black. So, if you see your badge changing color, that's your cue to get the fuck out."

"Okay, got it. Clicking bad. Black stuff bad. Easy enough."

"All right, we're touching down!" Bullseye says. "Want me to stick around or head off and lay low? Pretty sure those Flankers are gonna report back to their bosses."

On the one hand, having Bullseye remain in the area would mean he could respond quicker. On the other, he would be vulnerable to attacks by Russian planes. Even though you had witches and Laika in the air, that was still a big risk.

"Just head off somewhere where the radiation is light and just lay low. We'll call for you when we need you." You say.

"Works for me." Bullseye says. "Anyways, we're at the LZ. Good luck, guys!"

You turn to watch as Bullseye slowly settles the Osprey down in a clearing. You note all of the singed and burnt trees, as well as the dying plant life around you, signifying you were very close to an impact sight. Honestly, it looked more like some kind of surreal painting than a real landscape, but here you were, standing right in the middle of it.

"Come on, sir, let's go." Rex snaps you out of your trance, his MOPP mask hiding his face.

"Right, right." You nod. "Red?"

"Coming!" Red jumps out of the Osprey, and almost immediately, she begins sparkling a bright blue as her magic shield began reacting to the radiation in the air. This was expected, since you recalled reading it in the UN briefing you had hastily read.

"Red, you okay?" You ask anyways.

"Yeah... it's just weird." Red looks at her hands. "Not used to seeing my shield like this."

"Well, you should be more worried if it stops doing that." You point out. "Come on, let's go."

The three of you hustle towards the trees towards the last known position of the Ukrainian patrol.

"Sir, you think you might need some help?" Tarin asks as she swoops low over the trees.

"Well, we could use some aerial recon." Red says.

"But we might be more vulnerable to air attack if they're not on CAP duty." Rex says as he looks up to the sky.

None, the nukes used were tactical, multi-kiloton at best. The only nukes with strategic range and multi-megaton power are in the UNDF anti-Martian superweapons.

I forgot to mention that apparently the SWQverse don't have much in the way of ballistic missiles. The nukes used by the Stalinists to cover their retreat were apparently delivered by aircraft. Maybe by cruise missile, too.

That and apparently there are only limited numbers of nuclear weapons available to each nation and/or alliance. Otherwise, if the Stalinists did have enough warheads to erase Europe like you fear, then they would have erased Europe from the get-go instead of just covering their retreat with a wall made out of Oppenheimer's blessed light.

"Tarin, mind helping us out with some aerial recon?" You ask.

"Got it." Tarin affirms. "I'll keep an eye out for them."

"Thanks." You then turn to Rex and Red and wave them forward to follow you. The three of you carefully creep your way through the forest. Rex carries the geiger counter, and you continually hear the rapid clicking the machine makes. Probably not so good for morale, but you needed it in case you ran into any "hot spots".

"Hard to believe anybody could still be alive out here." Red says as she looks around at all of the dead foliage. "How would a bunch of border guards be able to survive all this radiation?"

"Well, maybe they had MOPP gear." You suggest. "Or they had a shelter that shielded them from the worst of effects. Plus, radiation poisoning doesn't kill you instantly. They might be in pretty bad shape, but alive, at least."

"Right." Red nods.

"Hold up, I see something." Rex warns.

The three of you crouch down as you slowly approach a nearby clearing. Red takes point, her carbine raised as she sweeps the area. With no immediate threat, Red gives the "all clear" sign. You and Rex run up to meet her, and see that you've come across what appears to be a makeshift campsite.

"There were definitely people here." Red observes. "Got a few tents and sleeping areas."

"Left in a hurry, too." Rex notes, poking the remains of a campfire at the center of the site. "The fire's still smoldering, and there's a lot of valuable gear lying around."

"I think I know why." You grumble as you bend down and pick up a spent shell casing, the brass glinting in the light, even through the dulled lenses of your MOPP mask. "Looks like they weren't kidding about being chased."

"Maybe we should try raising them on radio?" Red suggests. "They shouldn't be far, so we should be able to contact them."

"And risk giving ourselves away? Whoever attacked them didn't bother trying to cover their tracks. I say we follow them that way." Rex suggests.

"We'll go with Rex's idea and follow the tracks." You say. "If there's really Russians out here, they're most likely going to be the elite kind. I don't want to announce our presence here just yet."

"Makes sense, I guess." Red nods.

"I got their trail." Rex points deeper into the forest. "Deep boot tracks. These guys are loaded heavy."

"No doubt they're dragging along NBC gear, too." You grunt. "Makes me wonder what the hell they're doing out there, though."

"Nothing good, that's for sure." Red growls.

"Tarin, maybe you can scout the path ahead of us?"

"Already on it." Tarin says as you see her swoop over before fading out of sight.

"So, uh, what are we going to do when we find these hardcore Russian guys?" Red asks.

"We'll find out when we get to that."

The three of you continue to move carefully through the forest. However, you note Rex's geiger counter clicking even more rapidly. You give a worried glance to Rex, before remembering that he can't see your expression behind your mask. Fortunately, Rex seems to intuit your concern.

"Must be entering a hot spot. Maybe the patrol is entering it in an attempt to shake their pursuers."

"Doesn't seem to have worked." Red grunts. "And wouldn't that just kill them off faster?"

"Probably more to this than we know." Rex shrugs. "We can keep going, but it's going to be a risk."

"Well, um, I think I can expand my shield. As long as you guys stay close to me, I can keep the radiation off you." Red says. "But uh, don't expect me to be able to do anything else with my sparkles."

>>
>>40464417
>We'll advance under Red's shield.
>>
>>40464494

No. Apparently the fetish for fallout shelters existed in SWQverse as well, as they were expected to be vital for surviving the post-invasion nukings if the Martians came again, standard procedure being to nuke the landing sights. IIRC Ice's Grandad's quest included the guy getting warned off local milk, right at the end of the conflict as well. That to me suggests fallout concerns after nukes as well.

Of course, that was all a while back. No telling what 80s education was like, although given that she's in PJ's, it's still a bit surprising, as unrealistic as nuclear problems are for those guys.
>>
>>40464494
Nukes are not a MAD weapon in SWQ-verse. They are specifically designed to be anti-Martian invasion weapons, and therefore were never intended to be used on human targets. Yes, there were tests done and contingencies put in place in the event a human target was hit, but it was never an overriding concern.
>>
>>40464494
Nukes were almost exclusively an anti-matrian space defence weapon under the UN's control.
>>
>>40464600

To clarify, the ban on European milk was only in place for American troops during the war. Europeans were under no such restriction.

And it was from when the first Americans landed on England up till the end of the war (And just slightly beyond it.)
>>
>>40464679
Why shouldn't Americans drink European milk?
Was this purely a historical thing, because I don;t think it is the case now?
>>
>>40464679

Oh, so almost certainly not nuke related then. Unless they just didn't tell the Europeans.

Why was that? Unpasturised milk from a source that didn't have milk to spare?
>>
Ah, makes sense that she doesn't know then.
>>
>>40464747
>>40464763

Turns out drinking foreign milk when you're not acclimatised to it does funny, unpleasant things to your digestive tract due to differences in the bacteria involved.

It's an IRL restriction on foreign deployments, too.
>>

"Red, put up your shield. We'll advance under it." You say.

"Right." Red closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. The blue sparkles soon expand in the air around her, dazzling your eyes with light.

"Okay, this should be good for about a five yard radius around me." Red continues. "Try not to stray too far."

The three of you continue on further into the forest until Tarin reports in again.

"Captain, watch you. You've got potential hostiles about a hundred meters ahead of your position. Lots of tree cover so I can't get a good visual on their numbers."

"Thanks, Tarin. Just keep an eye on them." You whisper back.

With some actual intel now, your trio begins to move a little faster, but remain cautious. Soon, you can hear noise up ahead, and silently motion to Rex to turn off the geiger counter. The three of you creep ever closer, before you spy a number of men milling about in the trees. Like you, they're all wearing heavy NBC gear, though Russian issued. There's no identifying marks or patches, though you very much suspect this is some sort of Spetsnaz team.

"I count about a dozen of them. Maybe more." Rex grunts. "See that big ass radio they're lugging around? This is definitely a command element. Might be more teams in the area."

"They're not expecting an ambush from behind." Red whispers, her hand reaching for her sword. "We can take 'em!"

You do a count yourself and agree that there were roughly a dozen men ahead of you. Between you, Rex, and Red, you were confident you could take this team out, but then what would happen if there were more in the area?

They would have alternate forms of these programs that were more designed for repelling alien invasions. For example, STAR WARS would be about intercepting Martian landing craft before they could enter the atmosphere, while biological defense and CRBN would be considered in case of accidental exposure or to fight in "contaminated" environments.

I mean, you have to assume that since we're capable of NBC warfare, the aliens could be, as well.
>>
>>40464938

STAR WARS, as we know it, didn't really happen, no. There was a push to put in place a 'defense network' that would augment the UN's defensive emplacements over north america, but the cost would have been astronomical, and there never was enough political backing to get it off the ground. Not to mention, squabbling among the service branches as to who would get the program lead- the USN felt that, because the land-based components were derived from their AEGIS systems and standardized VLS packs, they should have the lead, while the USAF argued that it would be their space surveillance squadrons that formed the 'first line of engagement' and, as such, they needed to be able to issue commands. The Army argued that, as land based artillery emplacements, the installations should fall under army jurisdiction... it was a mess.

That said, Biochem defense was a major, major part of research spending- the martian black mist made a huge impression on the nations of earth.

>>
>>40465093

Just going from War of the Worlds, probably chemical. It never mentioned any sort of infection or spreading, it deactivated pretty quickly, and seemed to be heavier than air.
>>
>>40465093

Research ended up being fairly inconclusive. Most people who'd seen it in action in labs post war favored chem, but unfortunately the stuff was too dangerous to really do work with outside of a handful of very specially constructed labs, and stocks of it were extremely low. Martian refugees, those that knew enough about it to say anything, said it'd only been manufactured in a few places on mars, and that supplies had dropped off to almost none around '44. It's actual makeup and content were classified very highly, and martian countermeasures were almost nonexistent, though it was noted that the sealing on martian war machines crew compartments tended to be very, very good, and made of a synthetic substance that was actually surprisingly tough.
>>
Nanomachines with short battery life?
>>
>>40465252
I would say it's Chem then, and contained in something equivalent to BSL-4. Solid plating with an overpressure system could work if the Martian indications are correct. Something of an Aerosol similar to Agent Orange but different in the obvious ways. Overall, a nasty piece of work that could have treatments/instant applications of a anti-toxin for but either the inability/difficulty/unwillingness to test the stuff leads to a severe deficiency of countermeasures.
>>

"All right, if this is the command element, then we'll pretty much decapitate their search efforts if we take them out." You say. "Red, we're going to go full combat mode into this. Me and Rex can handle ourselves for the time being."

"Right." Red nods as she withdraws her shield back to just around her body. "So what's the plan?"

"Obviously we take out the radioman first. That's their only contact to the rest of the teams and to their HQ." You whisper. "Me and Rex will focus on them. You go in and sweep up the guys on the perimeter."

"So go fast and kill faster? Got it." Red's masked face nods. You can only imagine a wide smile behind it.

You make a final check on your carbine to make sure it's loaded and the safety is off. You see Rex do the same and he gives a thumbs up to signify that he's ready. You bring the sights up to your face and center them over the radioman, whose back is to you.

"Fire at will!" You hiss as you pull the trigger.

All hell breaks loose as you and Rex spray the radioman with your combined gunfire. Sparks fly as bullets punch through the radio pack and the poor man lugging it topples to the ground with a scream, grabbing the attention of his fellows.

But by then it's far too late.

Red is already blitzing through their perimeter, coming across a trio of Russian soldiers. One quick slash of her sword and six halves drop to the floor. You had to admit that Jetstream's training had done Red quite a lot of good in that department. Meanwhile, you and Rex focus fire on the Russians outside of Red's reach, keep them pinned and unable to retaliate. Heck, even Tarin provides some aerial support, sniping two Russians out of cover from her vantage point in the air. You and Rex account for a few more Russians, taking them down as they tried to scurry to better cover. In the space of about fifteen seconds, only about five of them are left.

One Russian attempts to take cover behind a tree, only to have Red dash forward and cut through both the tree and the Russian, sending the whole tree crashing the ground. The last four Russians have apparently had enough and flee deeper into the forest, firing wildly behind them in an attempt to discourage pursuers.

"Aw yeah, they're on the run! They're dead meat now!" Red whoops.

I was actually kinda curious more about the politics. There's a civil war of some description. Timing, martian culture, what they've been up to since, more about telepathy, existance of martians in popular culture and actual martians in society. What happened in America during the war, marstech post-war, motherfucking Tesla. To say nothing of the vast numbers of moments in all the SW quests where we had a choice of setting dump information and only got to pick a single one. Like the museum scenes in Paris. Even little stuff like the Forestall fire and it's effect on consort policy, etc.

I know it's a bit unreasonable considering it's a /tg/ quest and everything, but I really like the setting and wish there was more of it.

I actually find myself feeling kinda sorry for the squids the Russians captured. They had to figure out how to use those Dreadnaughts somehow.

Also, no American marstech? I vaguely remember that the Soviets got a lot capturing Warsaw where there was some sort of staging/repair grounds.

American interest in marstech was pretty limited- afterall, they lost, and immediate postwar analysis concluded that the vast majority of their weapons and equipment were largely useless to humans, requiring martian abilities to properly control them. While some interesting advances in metallurgy were made, it was felt that 'good old American' technology was superior for needs on earth. Also keep in mind that America didn't suffer as badly during the invasion, and that the USSR's casualty numbers were worse than they were for WW2 IRL, owing both to the martian's use of the black mist and because martian firepower was an order of magnitude better than the nazi's was. (And martian tanks tended to break down less. HAH)

"Let them go Red, we don't have time to chase them." You say. "Let's keep moving. Rex, you got a handle of where they were heading next?"

"I got better." Rex says as he digs through the pockets of one of the corpses and takes out a small booklet. "This guy had a map of the area. Lucky for us, he already marked the areas they searched and where they were going."

He tosses the booklet to you and you look at it. Sure enough, it was a map of the local area, with areas presumably already searched shaded out. There were a number of circles that suggested possible search spots, with the nearest being a little north of your current position.

"Okay, we got our next crumb in the trail. Let's move out." You say. "Red, did you take any hits?"

"Nah, I'm still good on energy." She assures you.

"Good. Expand your shield again to keep us protected and we'll continue moving."

"Um, guys, we have a problem." Ghost reports. "I have a visual on multiple aircraft incoming. Looks like a flight of Fulcrums. I think they're coming to investigate. What do we do?"

>>40465837
Given that the Covens were in the most important cities, I imagine they survived better than most. Plus witch magic being able to block the black mist and various other weapons far better. They'd survive better than most Russians. Although IIRC canonically there's less Russian witches about, even if they do have a far higher level of military intergration.
>>
>>40465823

Pretty much. They did a lot of damage across the great plains, especially with how terribly prepared the US military was for war. That said, they were contained by the early part of '42 and mostly wiped out (There were 'turncoat' Martians that were given a reservation around Rosewell, NM, and a few other isolated communities in Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas) by the end of that year. America didn't do this singlehandedly, of course, receiving a great deal of help in combat-ready formations from South American countries (Brazil, in particular) and Mexico and Canada.

>>40465828

Yep! That tied in heavily to the whole feeling that human science was better, and just had a couple bits here and there it could pick up- and that maritan war machines were junk. Fun fact- post war, there were multiple 'demonstrations' around the US where various flavors of Sherman would destroy captured martian vehicles, especially their 'tanks' and the few remaining tripod walkers. The tripods had been poorly suited to warfare on earth, and there weren't many left by the end of the war. All the known survivors were destroyed by various means by the end of the '60s.

>>40465837

The soviet witch was kind of an odd duck among witches, and it ties in with their actions during the revolution and how Lenin had treated them post revolution. I don't want to get into it all here- it's too long, and I don't wanna shanghai merc's run like that- but Stalin was very, VERY careful to treat them very well during the war, and made every effort to save their lives over other considerations multiple times.

"Don't engage them. They might just be passing through." You instruct. "But keep an eye on them nonetheless. The shouldn't be able to see you, Laika has stealth, and Bullseye is laying low, so you should be fine."

"R-right! We'll keep an eye on them, then!" Ghost says.

However, as you cut the radio connection, you hear the rustling of dead leaves and quickly raise your weapon. Rex and Red do the same as masked figures begin to emerge from the trees. However, unlike the Russians you had just fought before, these men were wearing a gaggle of thick clothing and gas masks. It wasn't true NBC gear, just whatever they were able to throw together.

"You are not Russian, are you?" One of them asks in a thick slavic accent."

"American. Well, here on the behalf of the UN." You say, pointing the bright blue UN insignia on the shoulder of your MOPP suit. "Mind lowering those weapons?"

"Yes, yes of course!" The leader nods and shouts in what is presumably Ukrainian at the rest of his men, who immediately stand down. You motion for Rex and Red to do the same. "You are rescue force?"

"That's right. We got your distress call." You say.

"Good, good. Russians are everywhere." The man nods before being interrupted by a rather violent coughing fit.

"Are you all right?" You dash forward to catch him.

"Ah, well, it was inevitable." The leader grumbles. "Me and the sickest of us agreed to lead the Russians away. To think it would also lead our rescue astray..."

"Diversion?" Red gasps. "So there's more of you out there?"

"Yes, the Little One and our healthiest. The ones that can still move." The leader nods.

Now that you think about it, on second look, you can tell that the Ukrainian soldiers around you looked to be almost dead on their feet, bracing themselves against the trees to stay standing. No wonder you didn't detect their movement until now. They must have just been holding position here the whole time.

"The Little One?" Rex asks. "Who's that?"

"A witch. We do not know from where, but she helped us when we were lost." The leader wheezes. "She found supplies and used her shield to protect us from the worst of the radiation. Even killed a few Russians. I think she's the one they are after."

"Well, we gotta find them, then!" Red shouts.

"Last I remember, they were moving south, in hopes of reaching Kharkiv." The leader continues.

"Bad news, Kharkiv is toast." You shake your head. "We have to find them."

"Sir, I think we need to evac these guys first. They need healwitch attention right away." Rex warns. "We might have to have Bullseye ferry them back first. The Osprey should be fast enough to get them back to base in time."

"Which will mean we'd have to wait for him to come back if we need to bug out quick." Red points out.

"Assuming the Russians don't find them first." Rex adds.

"It is okay. We can still distract the Russians." The leader coughs. "We already accepted we are long gone already."

"We're getting you guys out of here. Leave the others to us." You assure him and key your radio. "Bullseye, we found some of the guys we're looking for! They need immediate evac. Meet us at the LZ!"

"Got it, Boss!" Bullseye affirms. "Heading over there right now!"

"All right, everybody, I know you're all tired, but you've just got to move a little more, all right?" You ask the gathered soldiers. "I promise I'll get you guys out of this alive!"

There's a stream of affirmations and weak cheers as the soldiers get up to their feet and start moving. Even though they're wracked with radiation poisoning, the thought of rescue seems to do amazing things to their motivation. However, it does take a bit longer than you would have liked to get back to the LZ.

"Better hurry, I can see squads converging on your position." Tarin warns.

"All right everybody, let's MOVE!" You bellow as you see the Osprey touching down.

"Cap, I can go slow those guys down." Red says. "Just take a few of them out and lead them off. I should be fast enough to handle it."

"No, just help us load up." You say, pointing to the landing Osprey. "The faster we get them out of here the faster we can find the others."

"R-right. Got it, Cap." Red says as she physically picks up two of the soldiers, one with each arm, and carries them to the Osprey. Gotta love that witch strength.

"Come on, everybody in!" Rex yells as he helps each and every soldier in. You get a peek inside the cabin and see that the captured pilot has regained consciousness. You also note how he looks extremely nervous at being surrounded by a half dozen very angry Ukrainians. It was a good thing they were too sick to do much of anything, or you feared they'd tear the poor pilot apart or thrown him out the plane.

"Could use one of you to come back with us!" Hoskins shouts. "In case something happens with one of these guys!"

You glance at Red and Rex. As the squad leader, it was your duty to stay. However, you could task Red or Rex to accompany the flight back to keep an eye on the sick soldiers.

"Rex, you're going with them." You say.

"Yes sir." Rex nods without hesitation and he leaps onto the Osprey. "I'll make sure they back safe and alive."

"That's what I'm counting on." You say as you bang the side of the Osprey to indicate everybody is loaded. "Get out of here, Bullseye!"

>Don't have to tell me twice!" Bullseye shouts as he powers up the Osprey's engines. The large craft begins to lift off, and at that moment, you hear the roar of jet engines. You look up to see the Fulcrums moving in to investigate. They no doubt had seen the Osprey on radar.

However, before the Fulcrums can do anything, to AMRAAMs streak out from the clouds, detonating the two trailing Fulcrums. Nungesser then dives down from the clouds, her lance piercing and then shattering the fuselage of the third Fulcrum. Misono is right behind Nun, slicing the engines off of the fourth Fulcrum and sending the rest to tumble to the ground.

"Okay, if they didn't know we were here, they do now!" Misono says.

"It's great! I say bring them on!" Nungesser, fight happy as always, agrees.

"Ahaha, damn you, Boss." Bullseye groans.

"Hey, I'm just looking out for you." You chuckle. "Who knows what might happen on the way back?"

"Yeah, yeah. Thanks, I guess." Bullseye sighs as the Osprey disappears into the distance, with Nungesser following close behind.

"All right, we better get moving, Cap." Red warns you.

"Yeah, let's go." You nod as you do on last check on your gear and begin to head south. You hope that you'll be able to find this "Little One" before the Russians do, and that Bullseye would get back in time. Assuming that the radiation didn't kill you all first.

Nothing could ever be easy, could it?

If you can't run on Sundays in the future then we can understand that but if you're thinking of changing slots because 'activity' well personally I like it at the levels we've seen. Yes, today was a bit quieter than normal. I doubt it stay like that.

It's really a combination of both. Sunday nights are increasingly looking like a poor time to quest in general since people need to sleep in for work/school. I've often noticed a sharp drop in votes after a certain time. Also the quest is already at 75 threads so naturally things would start slowing down. When you get right down to it, me and Ghost's pacing styles aren't very compatible.
