Codex: (Coming soon!)

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

"Are you sure your shoulder is fine?" You ask for what must be the hundredth time.

"Yes, the medics stitched it up and everything." Tarin sighs. "Everything is fine."

"Just checking." You say as you nervously twiddle your thumbs. Waiting for the signal attack was simply nerve wracking, especially sitting inside your VT with all the lights off, in complete darkness. You couldn't really see anything at all. "And you're properly hydrated, right?"

"Yes, Roy." Tarin sighs again.

"Good, good." You mumble. It sucked having to maintain radio silence, as you couldn't speak with your other platoonmates.

Currently, you and your platoon, as well as 8th Platoon and a number of Tilean infantry units, were huddled behind a large hill preparing a counterattack against Reikland positions in revenge for their attack on your own borders. The idea was to not only break up the buildup of Reik forces, but to also seize ground to serve as a forward outpost as well as force Reikland to take pressure off of other sections of the line.

In other words, the battle was going to be a big one. If they ever gave the damn signal to start it already! Then again, you wondered about Sawyer's wisdom in insisting on...

WOO VTQ!
>>
>>40870704
>>Night Attack. Have the element of surprise, but poor visibility reduces accuracy and ability to coordinate.
Remember, we're smaller in number and on the offensive. We are easier to coordinate, and can take advantage of the night far easier than we can the day.
>>

>>Day Attack. Can coordinate better with friendly forces, but easier to detect by the enemy.

>>40870704
>Day Attack. Can coordinate better with friendly forces, but easier to detect by the enemy.
>>
Anons, why do you want to attack in the day, when our small strike can easily be spotted, maneuvered upon, and engaged by a superior force when it is not in our favor to do so?
>>
>>40870899
After all the shitty rolls we had yesterday, I don't want to take a visibility penalty to our gunnery rolls.
>>
>>40870704
>Night Attack. Have the element of surprise, but poor visibility reduces accuracy and ability to coordinate.
>>
>>40870704

>Night Attack.

Night is the time for sneak attacks, which is what this seems to be. Also, reduced accuracy cuts both ways, which is good for us since we're a sniper VT with light armor. We've got better native accuracy.
>>
>>40870961
So you'd rather let them hit us in the open than MAYBE make the DC 1 higher. It's illogical, anon.
>>
>>40870704
>Night Attack. Have the element of surprise, but poor visibility reduces accuracy and ability to coordinate.
>>
Ah, the pain of arguing for one vote only for the other side to completely ignore it, other than one comment.
>>
>>40870899
Personally I picked day attack because we're going to need all of the cooperation with other units that we can get.
>>
>>40871134
Look, I just want to see what we're shooting at.

Plus, you know, they have motherfucking zombies and I don't want to deal with that shit at night.
>>
>>40871156
What other units? We're doing this alone.
>>
>>40871202
We're on the attack against a superior force. It makes sense to leverage the night in order to engage fewer numbers at once. That more than evens out any loss of accuracy.
>>
>>40871234
>Can coordinate better with friendly forces, but easier to detect by the enemy.

Says so right up there. I didn't mean anyone outside of the division.
>>
>>40870704
>Day Attack. Can coordinate better with friendly forces, but easier to detect by the enemy.

Because MechaZombies dont care about light, but humans do
>>
>>40871134

Quite.

>>40871202

But anon, if the zombies come at night, we won't have to smell the sun cooking their exposed guts, and the darkness will hide their hideous visages. We can mow 'em down with the pintle mount and stomp on the corpses.
>>
>>40871326
We'll hang some air freshener in the tank's cabin to deal with the smell.
>>
>>40871386
What scent?

I personally like Strawberry or Fresh Apple
>>
>>40871410
black ice
>>
>>40871304
On the flipside, the enemy, who has far more forces, can coordinate far easier with each other. With as few numbers as we have coordination between friendly forces is not as difficult, particularly as we already have a plan. The enemy, who will be caught unawares of our plan, needs time to react. In night time, that is much more difficult.

>>40871312
Based on what information?
>>
>>40871442
It's still a divisional level attack at night, with roughly WWII level technology. That's not easy to pull off. There's a reason most attacks took place during the day.

There are pro's and con's to each, just like Merc said.
>>
>>40871442

dead things dont see shit becaus ynow, they ded
>>
Also if the robot zombie nazis function pure on rf signals. cant we just jam the shit out of them?
>>
>>40871547
We could, but it would help if we found out a variety of things. Maybe if we found the source of the signal and the equipment, we could produce a jammer.

You wondered about Sawyer's insistence on running a daytime attack. Sure, you would have better visibility to coordinate with fellow units, but that meant the Reiks would have better visibility to shoot at you as well. Then again, it wasn't your place to question a commander. At least he was planning the attack at dawn, where the Reiks would be the least prepared for an attack.

At least your VT was mostly fixed up. The freshly replaced leg looked almost better than new.

Suddenly, you could hear high pitched whistling from the outside. That had to be the artillery that would act as the prelude to your assault. Sure enough, seconds later, you could hear the distant booms of explosions as the shells landed behind the Reik lines. From your position, you couldn't see much other than the sky flashing from every explosion like lightning, but you were sure the Reiks were receiving a pounding.

"All right! All VTs forward! Open up a path!" Sawyer bellows, indicating the time for stealth was over.

"8th Platoon! Let's move!" You hear Chambers bellow, and to your right, you can see her platoon's VTs revving up their engines, coughing up thick black smoke.

"7th Platoon, let's go!" Bannon barks, probably eager to show he could keep up with Chambers.

In response, Tarin hits the ignition button, causing your VT to rumble and roar to life. As one, eight Wolverines crested the hill, right as the sun began to rise. Up ahead, you could see smoke and dust kicked up from the still falling shells. You risk turning out to get a better look with your binoculars. You can catch movement in the treeline, no doubt infantry and vehicles rushing to defensive positions.

"Sir, we'll hang back and provide some fire support." You say over the radar.

"All right, keep us covered then." Bannon grunts. "The rest of you, follow me in!"

"Maybe we should have Axel's VT lead the charge? It's better armored, after all." Parker says sweetly.

"Um right, yeah, let's do that." Bannon corrects himself "Axel, lead the way!"

"Got ya, sir!" Axel says eagerly as his heavy Wolverine picks up speed while your platoonmates fall in behind him. On the right flank, Chambers' platoon keeps pace, firing as it goes. Directly behind, you can see several platoons of infantry charging forward, using the VTs ahead of them as cover while mortars and machine guns from the rear open up on Reik positions.

Throughout all this, you scan for targets. Immediately, you see camouflage nets being pulled down, revealing hidden AT guns. You also see a platoon of six Lynxes rushing down the road to try and head off the assault.

"Roy, I see something, eleven o' clock." Tarin warns.

You swivel to the direction she indicates, and see a number of Reik infantry and a few technicians dashing for what looks to be a large holding pen. Perhaps that's where they were holding their undead troops?

"Tarin, brace for firing!" You yell as you drop back down into your command seat and close the hatch shut. You peer through your gunsight and settle your crosshair over the nearest AT gun emplacement. They're already starting to fire and their muzzle flashes give their positions away, making them painfully easy to target.

As you adjust for range, shells fall along your platoon's line of advance as the enemy gunners attempt to range in. You also see Chambers' platoon breaking off to engage the Lynxes, both sides already trading long range cannon fire.

"Firing!" You bellow.

You fire your you cannon, which shakes the entire VT with a large boom. You watch your sail over to the AT gun, only to overshoot and snap a tree in half like a toothpick. You silently curse. You overcompensated for your range to target. At this point, the AT guns fire a fresh volley of shots. Thankfully, the majority seem to be focusing on Axel's VT, which easily shrugs off the shell hits.

"Haha! No matter how many times you hit, you ain't cracking this armor!" Axel boasts as he fires his own cannon in response, blowing apart one of the AT guns firing at him."

"I'm never going to get the ringing out of my ears..." Alfie whimpers.

"Keep up the fire! They're faltering!" Bannon tries to encourage the platoon.

You pause to get an update of the battle. Your platoon was busy pressing eliminating the AT guns checking their advance, while 8th Platoon was engaging the Lynxes. You see one already reduced to a smoking husk, but the rest were viciously exchanging fire with your allied platoon. Meanwhile, the infantry continued to advance, but you could see the Reik infantry taking up defensive positions while their newly awakened undead reinforcements began shambling out of the pen.

You curse as your shot misses yet again. Apparently your canon was sighted correctly or something. However, it seems the AT gun emplacements aren't doing any better. They can't seem to stop Axel's inexorable advance, and you watch as his VT trods forward so close to the Reik lines that he literally stamps on the nearest AT gun with his VT's foot, crushing it flat and sending its crew fleeing. Seeing that their line is broken, the rest of the AT gun crews begin to break and run as well, leaving their guns easy pickings for the platoon.

"All right, good job, people!" Bannon says happily. "We got them running with the tails between their legs!"

"Hey, guys, we need some support here!" You hear Paccone bark. "Their MGs are pinning us down!"

"Tarin, move us forward towards the infantry." You instruct. "We'll help break a path through."

"Roger." Tarin nods as she opens up the throttle. Your VT rumbles to life as the legs move you forwards closer to the battle lines.

Up ahead, you can see that things definitely weren't going well for the infantry. They were pined down in an open field from all of the MG nests and trench lines that the Reik troops had hastily set up. What also wasn't helping was that a wave of undead troopers was slowly shambling in to flush them out of hiding. Meanwhile, the rest of your platoon was stomping down towards the battle, attempting to roll up the flank, but you also see soldiers rushing to a parked supply truck and hastily unloading rocket launchers.

You also see a large transmission tower just above the holding pens. Judging from what Egan had told you, this must be sending the control signal for the undead troopers...

You decide that the undead troopers were the more imminent threat to the attack. After all, if left unchecked, they would just rampage wildly through the pinned down infantry. Thankfully, their slow speed meant that it would take some time for them to reach your allies, giving you a bit of time to set up your shot.

Your shot hits straight and true. Like the tree before, your shell snaps the transmission tower like a toothpick, snapping through steel supports as if they were paper. The whole structure comes crashing down, and right at that moment, you see the undead troopers pause as their command control is suddenly interrupted.

"Now's our chance, boys! Let's get em!" You hear Paccone bellow as he and his men start tearing into the now directionless undead troops, easily knocking them down in the mass of fire. However, the rest of your platoon is still not in sight.

"Hey, how the rest of you guys doing?" You ask.

"Hold on guys, I'm coming from behind." You say. "Tarin, move forward, full combat speed!"

"Roger." Tarin nods. Your VT rumbles as it goes on the move again. She stomps forward, bounding over the MG emplacements. The few gunners that aren't shocked by the sudden move swing their guns around to attack, but it's a fairly pointless gesture. After all, even the weakest armor on your VT was thick enough to repel MG rounds. Their attacks aren't even a minor inconvenience as our hull pings and vibrates from the missile impacts.

Soon enough, you come up right behind the second infantry line, which is busy trying to get into a position to hit your platoon on a more vulnerable flank while our platoonmates are busy maneuvering to prevent that. Bannon and Rock's VTs strafe away from the worst of the volleys, while Axe decides to risk it and stay put, making sure to present his front to the enemy whenever possible.

"Take the shot already, Roy!" Axel grunts as another rocket ricochets off his front glacis.

Note the use of the word effectively. We have them, they just don't work as well.

Oh, shit, that's a pretty ambiguously-worded sentence, ain't it? I think it means that the cannon can't use the shells effectively, meaning "to any effect," meaning they wouldn't even bother bringing HE shells with them...but you might be right in your interpretation of 'effectively' meaning 'especially well.'
>>
>>40876056
The M10 had the 3 inch M7.

The answer is simple: Most German tanks simply didn't have the armor to protect against either weapon. They were good guns.

>>40876059
It did have a gun that was technically 76(.2?) mm, but it is known as the 3 inch M7, a completely different gun from the 76 mm M1.

>>
>>40876174
No, that is not the case, the 75mm was very effective against Panzer III and IVs while Tiger tanks and Panthers were very rare.
>>
>>40876031
not utilizing HE shells effectively means they wouldn't fire properly if we tried. our poor performance against infantry stems from the fact that we have to use our pintle gun
>>
>>40875919
You settle your sights over the supply trucks and fire off a cannon shot. You see shell punch into the lead truck and it almost immediately touches off, sending fire and debris everywhere and knocking all the infantry around it flat on their asses from the massive shockwave.

"All right, I think we've done enough damage for the day." Sawyer's voice squawks on the radio. "I can see the fires from here! Now I need a sitrep! Will it be possible to hold the area or will you need to fall back? I don't want to risk losing two platoons worth of armor if I can help it!"

You look around. There's still lots of infantry here, but they're scattered and now retreating in the face of the massive Tilean push. You can already see Tilean soldiers breaching and clearing the buildings in the camp.

"Hey! Chambers! How are you holding up?" Bannon asks as his VT takes a few potshots at the retreating infantry. "We got things tied up on our end!"

"Getting a bit tough out here." Chambers grumbles. "I'm seeing at least a company's worth of Lynxes coming in. Sixteen plus. Might need help on this one."

Why wold it not fire properly. I think it just means that our HE shell has less explosive filler.
>>
>>40876174
Your impression was completely wrong. Against most tanks they faced, even the 75mm M3 carreid by most Shermans was more than enough to penetrate. Hell, it was lauded as THE finest dual purpose cannon in North Africa.

Where it had trouble was with the comparatively rare Tiger and Panther, as well as other more rare TDs. But even that wasn't an insurmountable problem. In the Battle of Arracourt, when a German and American armored forces dueled it out, the mighty Panther was found lacking.

Hell, look at what the Germans had to do in the early stages of Barbarossa. Their guns were almost completely ineffective against the Soviet T-34 and KV-1 from range, and they still took massive casualties. Why? It's simple- tactics.

You don´t design a gun to only shoot one type of shell. There is no way Requisition would allow a VT that could only fire AP to be fielded.
>>
>>40876373
different anon, but it is possible that they would only outfit us with HE shells if we were going to be attacking primarily infantry targets. since in this battle we could, and should, have been assigned to only take out things like VTs and AT guns, we may only have AT shells just because VTs aren't big enough to carry a whole lot of ammo
>>
>>40876345
Why must you assume that? Is it so hard to realize that an AT gun can carry HE ammunition?
>>

Dedicated artillery pieces could also field AP rounds.

Dedicated AT platforms also carried HE rounds.
>>
>>40876455
yes but artillery need different types of rounds to deal with the wide rang of targets they need to drop ordinance on.

AT platforms should have HE rounds but that does not mean that it should be fighting Infantry, in fact it should avoid that very thing unless it has to deal with it.

"Let's go stop that push in its tracks." You say.

"Yeah, that's probably the best course of action." Parker says encouragingly. You can just imagine her nudging Bannon's shoulder to get the point across to him.

"Yeah, I suppose we can give Chambers a helping hand." Bannon says reluctantly. "The infantry should be able to handle things from here."

With that, as a unit, your platoon trundles over to the main road, where Chambers' VTs have dug in. Up in front, you can see eight wrecked Lynxes and various armored vehicles. It appeared that in their usual suicidal attack patterns, they had tried to frontally charge down the road.

However, it looked like 8th Platoon wasn't in too great a shape, either. Their armor was scratched and dented beyond almost all recognition. A few also seemed to be limping from damaged leg motors, too.

"Jeez, you've seen better days, Chambers." Bannon sighs.

"Maybe you guys should retreat?" Rock suggests.

"Stow it, you two." Chambers grunts. "Our objective is to hold this road and this is what we're gonna do."

Many people misunderstand American WW2 Tank Destroyer doctrine. I hope that this little post can correct that in a brief way.

As we all know, America was a bit of a latecomer into WW2. However, that doesn't mean it wasn't preparing for it. In the leadup to Pearl Harbor, many actions were taken to prepare the US for war. This included an expansion and restructuring of the Army. Now, being a latecomer into WW2, the US got to witness what happened in Poland in September 1939 and in France in 1940. They saw all too well the power that massed German armor was an extremely serious threat, one that needed to have a counter prepared for it. That counter was the Tank Destroyer Force and the Tank Destroyer Battalions.

Now, how exactly do you defeat a concentrated armor attack? With concentrated anti-tank power. Now the big issue here is concentration. A few tanks isn't a big deal, and can easily be dealt with by local forces. What the US was worried about was large, concentrated armored attacks. Each division was therefor assigned a Tank Destroyer Battalion, which would be held in reserve until such a time as the enemy armor concentrations were found, from where the Tank Destroyer Battalion would move to counter it. One common myth about the M4 Sherman was that it was never designed to fight tanks because tank destroyer doctrine existed. This is wrong. It was designed to be able to (and was pretty good at it), as the Tank Destroyers would only be thrown against large concentrations of armor.

That's just a basic primer about the initial doctrine. I could go more into how it shifted and was ignored over time, but I don't particularly care to today.

>then do what you have to get a new one. sell it for scrap if you have to if the mileage is that bad.

"Axel, take position at the center of the road. You'll draw their fire while the rest of us concentrate on picking them off. Are you fine with that?"

"We'll take the opposite flank. We'll have a better chance of getting through the side armor." You say.

"Got it. Good hunting." You see Bannon and Rock's VTs walk off to the left of the road, while Tarin takes yours to the right. Looking through the sights, you can see the Lynxes blitzing down the road towards 8th Platoon's position. Farther back, you can see Bannon and Rock's VTs using a line of trees as cover as they approach the flank. As for the Lynxes, they either weren't aware of you or didn't care, as they singlemindedly galloped down the road.

"Maybe this is a good time to use one of those new rounds Egan gave us. Try to disable one of them." Tarin says.

"At this range? Will it work?" You ask.

"We'll find out, I guess." Tarin shrugs.

Anyone have a feeling that the Reik are holding back their better VTs, and are just sending Lynxes for the initial stages?

Welp.
>>
>>40877456
No way would they send something as powerful as a tiger VT at this stage. We would have to do something big to get that on our ass. Maybe a panther equivalent.

What I'm thinking is that they'll send in their superior Heavy and Medium tanks if they decide just spamming Lynxes isn't doing well, or something drastic happening.

You're an idiot.

The Panther was the latewar equivalent of the Tiger that they held back from engagements until they had enough to make a shock. The Panther was a better thank than the Tiger in pretty much every way and where it wasn't it was equal.
>>
>>40877446
At a guess they are already producing better ones and getting rid of obsolete VTs

didn't it also break down a whole lot.

>>40877489
pretty much

>>40877487
yeah but if we do run into a tiger at this point it would cause us a hell of a lot of trouble, mostly due to it being a new enemy unit we had not encountered yet and such lack of information could kill us.
>>
>>40877489
Nah, they'll probably upgrade their Lynxes first with a better gun or add some extra armour.
>>
>>40877399
"Okay, loading the new round!" You say as you hit a switch on the autoloader. The machine hums as it swaps out the shells. You then take aim at the trailing Lynx at the end of the convoy. If you wanted to disable one of them, you needed to do it to one they wouldn't see, to minimize chances of them scuttling it anyways.

"All right, just keep moving like that..." You mutter as you pull the trigger.

In an open field environment like this?

No way, pal. The 88 would outrange us pretty easily simply because of the larger shell retaining more energy.

The Tiger was at the time probably the best long range direct fire platform.

They'd just sit back and put holes through us from way far away and force us to charge them or retreat.

If we run into a Tiger equivalent, we just fall back on the basics and try to go for side and rear shots, at close range if necessary. We can use the trees in this area to mask our approach.

I'd actually be rather worried if they sent those equivalents quite early on in this war. It would say a lot about the situation on their side as much as ours.
>>
>>40877572
actually three seconds but don't it still count.

>>40877576
yeah it would but remember they would need to actually field those kitties and if their military/government is a fucked up as ww2 nazi germany was then I think we will be fine for a while.
>>
>>40877550
I don't see open field, I see rolling fields and forests. IE Western Europe. In that kind of environment, the Tiger's max range is not going to come into effect. Probably.

>>40877554
You know the movie Fury? The Tiger engagement annoyed me for a number of reasons, the first of which was that the Fury could have drilled a hole through the front of the Tiger at the distance the engagement started at- without using HVAP.

>>40877576
Just a reminder, Tigers first saw combat in the later parts of 1942.
>>
>>40877602
>the first of which was that the Fury could have drilled a hole through the front of the Tiger at the distance the engagement started at- without using HVAP.
Nah, they would have had to close 200 meters to punch through its front plate with APBC, they started the engagement at 800 meters, their best non-HVAP round penetrates 100mm at 600m.

And while that was cringe worthy, that was also the way they were taught and instructed to respond and attack, as in thats what armor school and their manuals said to do, so they did that.

"Firing!" You yell as your cannon roars. You watch the round arc across the field and down into the trailing Lynx, slamming right into the side of the enemy VT. There's no explosion or penetration. Instead, the shell flattens itself and triggers its specialized warhead, releasing arcs of electricity that spiderweb across Lynx's hull. It just stops dead in its tracks.

"Yeah! We got it!" You whoop.

"Focus, Roy. There's still more." Tarin reminds you.

"EAT THIS, BASTARDS!" Bannon bellows as he and Rock's VTs barge out from the treeline, firing as they go. This close, there's no way they can miss, and two Lynxes go down quickly. You rotate your turret to reacquire a new target and knock out another Lynx.

Under attack from three sides, the Lynx company is quickly annihilated, 11 of the original 12 VTs being reduced to smoldering husks.

"Well, I suppose you guys didn't do too bad." Chambers says grudgingly.

"Roy." Tarin turns to you. "I haven't seen anybody try to bail or dismount from the Lynx we knocked out."

"Well, that shell did pump god knows how many volts of electricity into it. Maybe the crew got fried?" You shrug.

"Maybe... still doesn't seem right." Tarin frowns. "I think we should check it out."

Even though things had calmed down, you knew that the area wasn't totally secure yet.

There probably isn't a crew. It's likely some undead abomination and the crew space is full of some kind of meat/machine hybrid.

"We'll hold off for now." You say. "Let's set up defensive positions."

"Roger that." Tarin nods.

Even though everybody was bracing for it, there were no new attacks. Apparently, the Reiklanders really did get caught with their pants down. Eventually, additional units arrive to reinforce your position, and make preparations to set up a new forward base. At least in this one section of the line, Tilea had a toehold in Reikland.

It wasn't until almost sundown that it was deemed safe for Egan and her team to arrive. Egan, on her part, didn't look too different from how you saw her before, but the way she had a bounce in her step seemed to indicate that she was eager to get to work.

"It hasn't been touched since it was disabled?" She asks as she starts climbing a ladder to the top.

"Nope. Nobody even came near it." You shake your head.

"Excellent." Egan nods to a team of technicians carrying a power torch. You uess it's to cut a hole in the disabled tank so that they could get inside. "You might want to step back."

The actual cutting process takes a very long time. At least a couple of hours. However, finally, the breach is made, and the technicians pull the hole off. Two soldiers point their rifles down into the hole, just in case.

"It's clear." One of them grunts.

With that, Egan and two of her technicians lower themselves into the hole. Scant seconds later, the same to technicians quickly clamber back out, dropping to the floor and running away screaming like the Devil himself was chasing them.

"That the hell..." Axel mutters.

"M-maybe that shell made a big mess inside?" Alfie whimpers. "I h-heard that g-getting shocked makes you lose control of-"

"Yes, we get it." Rock cuts her off. "No need to say it out loud."

Finally, Egan emerges from the Lynx, clutching a large, glass cylinder close to her chest. You squint to try and get a better look, and recoil in when you see a pink, wrinkled organ.

It was a goddamn brain.

(Meanwhile...)

"The newest reports have come in, Colonel, and suffice to say, we are less than impressed with the performance of your new 'weaponry.'"

"Forgive me, Minister, but as you can see, it was quite unfortunate the Tileans discovered us when they did, as most of my experiments had not been completed yet."

"You are on thin ice here, Colonel. We have invested an exorbitant amount of resources on your 'special projects', and we have yet to see any of them pay off. According to you, we would have taken all of Tilea by now!"

"Again, it was merely bad timing. In fact, these battles have proved quite enlightening, informing us of issues we never would have considered in a controlled environment, and fixes are already being made."

"The Science Division will be allocated three more months of funding. If no results are observed, we will have no choice but to involve the Guard."

"Of course, Minister."

"As long as you understand the stakes. Until next time."

As he watched those old fashioned and uninformed fools leave, Colonel Willhelm Strasse smiled. He would show them. He would show them all his great works...

>And that's it for tonight! I will be taking a break for the 4th of July weekend, so no threads next week, but we will be returning to our regular schedule the week after! Don't forget PJ Witches on Sunday!
