Our story continues now.

Kaito awakens with a start, in the bed he has been using for the previous two days. He immediately checks his wounds; there is still an ache but he is alright and they are gone. How?

He remembers dragging himself to the fortress and then passing out. Perhaps they used healing magic on him to get him better?

He looks out the window and sees the sun setting, the last rays of light dipping below the horizon. How long was he out? Is it still the same day? His clothes are nearby, now with fresh bullet holes. He slips them on along with his gauntlets and stretches his limbs, working the sore muscles. He hopes they removed the bullets from his legs, or if they somehow magic'd them away...

There is no one else in the room. All of his possessions and Shao Kahn's old helmet and hammer are still here.

Kaito decides to head to the throne room and see who can tell him about this assassin. As he opens the doors, Kaito is suddenly greeted by Jade, who is without her mask.

"Kaito! I'm surprised to see you up!" she says with a smile. "Are you alright?"

Kaito nods, giving her a strange look; the last time he spoke with her, she potentially ruined any progress made with turning Mileena good. She attempted to justify her reasons, but it still left Kaito with a bad impression.

"I'm alright, I was just heading to the throne room," he replies quickly.

The edenian beauty places a hand on his shoulder. "You seem unnerved. Do you need more rest? Perhaps a drink, something to sooth your nerves?"

He looks into her emerald eyes, seeing genuine sympathy within them.

"I was attacked by an assassin who used weapons from my world, from Earthrealm," he tells her. "Unless Outworld invented firearms and had an Old West too... He used guns, small revolvers and a rifle that fire bullets, metal projectiles, that can kill with a single shot. Any of that sound familiar?"

Jade's eyes narrow. "I'm afraid not, but such technology does not exist in Outworld. I have seen the weapons you have described, but they are only used by those from Earthrealm."

"So maybe he's from Earthrealm too, then..." Kaito muses aloud.

Jade gently squeezes his shoulder. "Come now, Kaito, you really should rest. Let me help you to bed." She subtly turns him towards the bed.

"I'm alright to move," he insists. "I'd like to learn more about who tried to kill me."

She smiles and shakes her head. "Let me help you, I insist. I am very skilled at massaging sore muscles, which you could surely use after all of the ordeals you've been through."

Kaito catches up to her. "I'm sorry," he says. "I'm just a little on edge, I guess."

She turns and looks at him. "It's alright, Kaito. I understand."

"No, no, really, it's just... I was a little put-off by what happened in the dungeons. I'd like it if we could perhaps just move on from it and forget that it ever happened?"

She smiles. "I would like that. I'm sorry for what I did."

He scratches the back of his head. "So... how about that massage?"

She chuckles lightly. "It's alright, Kaito, it's fine. You're allowed to be as tough as you like. I'll take you to Kitana; she may know more about your mysterious assassin."

She motions down the hall. "This way; Kitana is relaxing in the fortress' hot springs after a long day of meeting delegates from around Outworld."

Kaito looks at her incredulously as he walks along behind her. "This fortress has a hot spring?"

"In the lower levels; it previously served as the Emperor's personal bath. It's rather soothing; perhaps you should give it a try as well?"

Kaito remembers similar rooms from his travels back in Earthrealm; they were indeed very relaxing and he could use something to sooth the ache in his muscles.

Jade leads him down a few flights of stairs and down another hallway. Two guards are posted outside a room that steam gently wafts out of. Jade approaches the guards, and at her appearance, they uncross their axes from the doorway, allowing Kaito entrance.

The room is stone, and the walls are slick with water from all the steam. Candles light the area and small shrines can be seen through the haze of steam rising from the pool of hot water. Kaito already feels a bit of a light sweat coming on.

Speaking of, Reptile references Chameleon in one of the new MKs. If you play a Mirror Match with two Reptiles, he asks if the other is Chameleon.

But honestly, I'm fine with Chameleon being a saurian. He's been one of my favorite dudes since MKT, and him getting his own design and shit in MKA was the most awesome for me.

I'll put an end to this Chameleon/Saurian/Khameleon/Reptile/Green Blood debate and simply say that Khameleon and Chameleon will eventually show up further down the line and their connection to Reptile's race will be elaborated on then; the canonicity of Chameleon being a saurian or not is still in question but your guy's discussion has given me quite a bit to think about in regards to what he/she/it may actually be in regards to what I plan on establishing in the canon of this quest

Kaito tries to glimpse through the thick steam. "Empress? Princess? Queen? Kahnum? Kitana?" he calls out, running through the many titles she has been addressed as lately. He doesn't see her, and doesn't get a response. "Where could she--"

The surface of the water breaks and Kitana emerges, taking a deep breath; evidently she was diving below when Kaito entered. She swims to the edge and pulls herself up to a sitting position with her legs still dangling in the hot water, her back to Kaito.

Kaito hasn't ever shied away from noticing the attire of the female edenians and how little it leaves to the imagination, but now the princess is wearing the edenian equivalent to a bathing suit.

He swallows a lump in his throat. "Kitana?"

She looks over her shoulder at him. "Kaito! You surprised me," she gasps before smiling. "I see Asgaarth's magic worked well on your wounds."

"I'll have to thank him later," he replies, averting his eyes slightly to avoid getting too... distracted. "I don't mean to intrude..."

"Not at all," she says. "The water is wonderful. Come, join me."

Kaito raises an eyebrow but slowly drops his gauntlets and removes his shirt, kicking off his shoes. He approaches the water's edge and Kitana watches him as he nears her side. He sits down and places his legs in the warm water, immediately feeling the warmth travel up his limbs and into his body.

"This spring is wonderful. Perhaps the only good thing my adoptive father ever had built. I used to spend hours in here..."

"It's very nice..." Kaito says, trying not to stare at her gorgeous body. "I... was wondering about the assassin." He describes the gunman to her; his appearance, his demeanor, everything.

"I have heard of an assassin like this before..." she says. "He wanders Outworld, his only allegiance is to the highest bidder. A bounty hunter, mercenary and assassin, but he uses weapons unlike any other in the land. They say his name is whispered on the winds of death... Black. Erron Black."

Now Kaito has a name to his killer. But who hired him?

Kitana stretches her long, toned legs, rubbing them softly with her hands, and looks at Kaito. "Why don't you go for a swim? It will help."

Before he can reply, she dives forward into the water. She surfaces not far away and Kaito has to struggle to not stare at the sight he sees before him.

"P-Princess..."

She looks back over her shoulder and smiles seductively. "Join me, won't you...?"

Kaito decides to throw caution to the wind--he's already more than prepared to take what the princess is offering.

He slides into the pool, feeling the warmth of the water. As his feet reach the ground, he walks towards her. Kitana bites her lip in anticipation before standing up herself and approaching him, swaying her hips through the water.

He holds his breath as she nears and presses herself against him, her amble cleavage rubbing against his chest. Her fingers dance up his arms and wrap themselves around his neck as she leans up to his neck, kissing it softly.

Kaito's hands cup her soft, wet behind, gently groping and squeezing. He had imagined it before, but the real thing is a hundred times more amazing. He feels her lips against his skin as she kisses her way up to his chin, then his lips...

Her tongue pushes past his lips and he gives in, opening his mouth wide, encouraged by her moans...

Her tongue tastes so sweet, so delectable, so... long...

Wait...

Kitana pulls away, revealing a long, thin, reptilian tongue. Her eyes change from the beautiful blue to a bright white, with narrow black slits.

Kaito's eyes widen and he realizes that his mouth is numb.

Kitana's skin changes then, to a translucent grey color, her hair shifting into a wild mane of similar shimmering grey translucent nature, with her clothing changing into a skintight leotard that shifts colors, from red to orange to yellow and then on to all of the other colors.

Kaito lets go and staggers backwards as the poison works its way to his throat, causing it to swell up.

Kaito looks at the shifting assassin as she approaches, taking out a knife. He struggles to breathe and his vision blurs but he is still ready to defend himself.

Summoning up what energy he can, he electrifies the pool and shocks her. She falls beneath the surface and Kaito climbs out, crawling towards the entrance.

The water explodes behind him and Jade leaps out, her eyes glowing white. She runs towards Kaito and leaps atop him, striking at him with sharpened claws at the ends of her fingers. Kaito turns and blasts her again with electricity, throwing her off.

His throat is nearly fully sealed. He knows that if he runs out of air, he will die. Focusing as hard as he can, he puts more energy and power into his teleportation ability than ever before and he teleports away, down the hall, up the stairs and to the very top of the Sorcerer's Tower. There, Turana is working.

He materializes alongside her, choking and gasping. The sphinx panics before checking him over and seeing the blackened veins around his neck and its swollen nature.

"Hold on!" she says and immediately begins to prepare an antidote.

Kaito's eyes close and he sees nothing but darkness.

He awakens in the dead of night in Turana's tower, with the sphinx, Kitana and Asgaarth standing over him. Two guards are posted at the entrance.

"Kaito," Turana says, nudging him. "Are you alright? I hope the solution worked..."

He rubs his sore throat and then looks up at Kitana with suspicious eyes. "Are you really you?" he asks her.

"Of course I am," she says. "What happened? Another attempt on your life?"

Kaito closes his eyes and sighs, laying his head back on a pillow. "I'm getting real tired of Outworld trying to kill me. Now another shapeshifter is after me, a poisonous one..."

"And she looked like me?" Kitana asks, very worried that there may be someone trying to be an imposter Empress.

"And Jade," Kaito replies. "Who knows how long she's been with us... Maybe even since..."

Kaito stops himself.

What if he never actually rescued Jade from Shang Tsung's fortress? What if... it was that 'thing' all along? Ever since the beginning?

"Who is guarding Mileena?" Kaito suddenly asks.

Kitana thinks for a moment. "Jade was in charge, but when she left, she posted several guards..."

Kaito sits up. "We need to check, right now!"

They run down to the dungeon, where a gruesome sight awaits them. The guards are all dead, with most of them having their throats torn out by someone with a fang-filled maw. Kaito grabs his hair and pulls in frustration.

Mileena's cell is empty and the door is wide open.

"Shit," he mutters to himself. Kitana shares his sentiments.

"We need to find her," Kitana says. "She is a great threat while she is free."

Kaito looks at her, unsure if he can trust her. "How do I know you're the real Kitana?" he asks seriously.

"I have been with her all day," Asgaarth says. "I can attest to her authenticity."

Kitana nods. "I understand your suspicion. I give you my word that I will track these assassins down while you are away."

Kaito decides first that he will make contact with Sub-Zero. Placing his hand on the orb, he focuses, and the lucid-dream-like quality of the spiritual transportation across realms washes over him again, much like last time. Steeling himself, he focuses on the objective and concentrates on Sub-Zero.

The former Lin Kuei is sitting around a fire built over the artic plains. His ship is nearby, being tended to by his men.

Kaito appears before him and speaks to him. He tells him that he will be arriving soon. Sub-Zero is glad to see that the plan is still in motion and will await his arrival. Their conversation is very short and business-like, which helps Kaito, as a length conversation in this manner is draining of the spirit.

Next, he contacts Sheeva, who returned with the royal family to Kuatan. He appears before her and tells her of the attempts on his life and of the danger the Empress is in, asking her to return to the fortress to help protect Kitana. Sheeva swears that she will, along with several other shokan, owing her allegiance to the Empress and Kaito.

Again, the conversation is short. Kaito breathes and ignores the growing headache and prepares to make the final call.

I'm going to have to break the tie and declare Tortek.

Kaito heavily considers calling Mileena, but knows that he can only speak to someone if they willing to speak back. Would she even want to talk to him now?

He puts in the call to Tortek.

Focusing on his tarkatan friend, his soul doesn't have to travel very far, merely to the wastelands in the south.

There, around a great campfire, the tarkatans feast and fight with each other, testing strength and ferocity. At the head of the great feast atop a pile of bones forming something of a stump-like throne, Tortek sits.

The severed head of Baraka hangs from his waist around a rope, and several broken arm-blades are strapped to his back. Around his neck, he wears a necklace of tarkatan teeth strung together. His mouth and face are slathered with blood and he busies himself with the food he is ripping from a limb that Kaito hopes wasn't once human. He can hardly recognize his friend with all of the added details.

"Tortek?" he asks.

The tarkatan looks up, surprised. "Kaito," he says. "Good to see you!"

Kaito looks around at the many tarkatans feasting and fighting. They don't seem to pay him much heed, if they can even see him at all. "Life goes well?"

Tortek nods. "Tarkata strong. Tarkata rule the wastelands, and Tortek rule the Tarkata."

"Yeah, I can see you've dealt with some challengers," he says, looking at the arm blades and teeth. "Listen, I need you to swear fealty to the new Empress Kitana and move your people north to the fortress-city to help protect her."

"Like Baraka did to old Emperor?" he asks.

"Yes. I'll make sure Kitana knows you're coming and your people will have all the food and enemies you could ever want."

Tortek nods. "Tortek lead. You'll be there to meet us?"

Kaito shakes his head. "I have another job to do. But it's good to see you doing so well, my friend. I'll be in touch soon."

Tortek nods and holds up the meat as Kaito vanishes back to his physical body.

"Did you accomplish all you desired?" Asgaarth asks.

"We never really do, but that's enough for now," he replies, rubbing his head. "Now..."

Kaito ensures that he has all of his things in order before giving a warning to Kitana and Turana about the approaching horde. He stresses to Kitana the importance of giving Mileena another chance and not to react too harshly if she is encountered again.

Afterwards, he departs. The nethership has been kept in good condition and thanks to Asgaarth has been cleaned up a bit. The supplies have been loaded upon it and the journey is ready to commence.

Asgaarth takes his place at the helm of the vessel, prepared to channel the necessary power into the ship. "Are you prepared?" he asks.

Kaito nods. "I'm ready to get this done with, that's for sure."

Kaito instructs Asgaarth on the general location. With a bit of magic, the eagle-man is able to discern the destination from Kaito's mind and upon channeling the energy into the ship's magical wards, a great cloud of fog rolls around it and the ship moves forward out of the dock.

Soon, the entire ship is encased in the fog and a great swirling wind and thunderstorm rolls around it. Soon, Kaito is hit with a blast of cold air as the ship emerges from the fog in the icy waters of Arctika.

Nearby, Sub-Zero's ship is docked, anchored on the edge of a snowy bank.

Kaito's ship approaches it and Asgaath pulls up alongside the bank. Kaito looks and sees the former Lin Kuei warriors, and among them is Smoke.

The grey ninja approaches and waves, his magnificent grey hair flowing in the cold wind. "Kaito!" he shouts. "We've been expecting you!" Sareena stands alongside him, wearing a dark robe to protect herself from the cold.

Kaito jumps down and lands in the snow. He shivers slightly but walks up to his friends, giving both a brief hug. "Where's the main man?" he asks.

They lead him over to the burning fire. As they do, Smoke explains, "After we returned to Earthrealm, we found that not all of the Cyber Initiative had fallen. Sektor still lives, and he possesses the Dragon Medallion that his dead father possessed. Its properties have amplified his powers and he has been hunting us across China. We left for Arctika not too long after."

Sub-Zero looks up at their approach. "Kaito. It is good to see you in the flesh, instead of a vision."

"The same," Kaito replies, offering his hand, but Sub-Zero does not shake it. He holds up his hand, frozen and blue.

"I don't want to accidentally freeze you in this weather," he says. Kaito nods, understanding.

Kaito sits by the fire and explains all that has happened in Outworld, especially the assassins (leaving out the detail in which he tried to sex up the second one, if only to be polite). Kuai, Sareena and Smoke listen intently.

"Outworld is a dangerous place to be at the moment," Sub-Zero observes after you are done speaking. "Still, our quest will take us there, it seems."

Smoke looks at Kuai. "I'll stay here to lead the efforts in finding the temple."

"What temple?" Kaito asks.

"There is rumor of a grand temple here amongst the icy mountains, ancient and forgotten. It will be the home of my new Lin Kuei," Sub-Zero explains.

"A legend that my mother told me about my father's people," Sub-Zero replies.

Sareena speaks up. "I too would like to go."

Kaito would be happy to have her along. "It's up to you, Sub," he says.

Sub-Zero looks at Smoke. "I will hold things here," Smoke says. "Go and find what you are looking for."

Sub-Zero nods at his friend. "Sareena will accompany us, then," he says. "Shall we depart for Lost Edenia immediately, then?"

There are places that Kaito would like to go, but perhaps they have enough skill on board as it is. A party of himself, Sub-Zero, Sareena and Asgaarth should be fine enough.

With his two allies in tow, he returns to the nethership and tells Asgaarth that they are ready to depart. As they push away from the shore, Asgaarth prepares the magic to take them back to Outworld, to Lost Edenia.

She sighs. "Honestly... I thought things would be a little bit different."

"What do you mean?" he asks as the ship rolls into a thick layer of fog.

She pulls the cloak a bit tighter around her shoulders. "It's complicated," she admits. "I fell in love with Bi-Han, his brother... Seeing what Bi-Han turned into, I was hoping his brother would fill the gap, but... well, that was a little foolish of me. Kuai Liang is... distant. I think the Cyber Initiative took a larger toll on him than he would admit, even if it didn't completely rob him of his humanity, it didn't leave it fully intact, either."

Kaito leans over the ship's railing. "Everyone is bound to be different no matter what," he tells her. "I'm sure that losing Bi-Han was tough, but you can't expect someone else to be like him."

She nods. "I know that now. Even if it hasn't been for very long, spending time with you mortals has made me realize quite a few things."

She smiles as she looks at him. Around the ship, the inter-dimensional storm rages as it passes through the realms.

"Besides... There's always more fish in the sea," Kaito says.

Kaito heads to the back of the boat to check on Sub-Zero. He is engaging in a kata, practicing moves and stretching. He pauses when he sees Kaito.

"You alright?" Kaito asks.

"I am prepared for our quest," he says, punching and kicking.

"That's not really what I was asking," Kaito replies. "You. Are you alright?"

He stops again. "It has been difficult. The things they did in that lab..." He clenches a fist. "I cannot believe that the Lin Kuei I once held so dear became so... lost."

He opens his hand and creates a small fog of freezing air. "I cannot feel with my hands. I always had the power to freeze, but nothing before this ever felt so... cold."

Kaito is quiet as Sub-Zero looks out over the darkened sea. "I will do better this time. I will make a better Lin Kuei. I have to. It's all I have left."

"That's not true. You have your allies who will help you." He is silent. "What is this legend your mother told you?" he changes the subject.

"Bi-Han and I did not know our father. Our mother told us that he was... from elsewhere."

"Like, not from home? Earth?"

"Another realm. He called himself a "cryomancer" and I don't know what he saw in my mother or why he left to be with his people. But Bi-Han and I inherited his power. And now... We are both shadows of what we once were."

He turns to look at Kaito with his cybernetic eyes. "You know... ever since you pulled me from that table, I have wondered... Was it really Kuai Liang that you rescued? Or just another tool of the Cyber Initiative that they couldn't finish?"

Kuai's eyes seem reflective. "What?"

"At the tournament, Mortal Kombat, the first one... I was partially responsible for his death. Scorpion killed him, but I'm the one who could have stopped him. Pulled Bi-Han out of the portal..."

Sub-Zero does not initially say anything. Kaito worries at what his reaction might be.

"I... I'm sorry, Kuai. He was fighting against Earthrealm, for the Lin Kuei, the old Lin Kuei. I never knew that I would meet you or that all of this would happen."

"I know," he says suddenly. "I can't blame you for my brother's death. I can't even blame Scorpion. He destroyed himself and now he is what he is for a reason."

He looks Kaito in the eye. "Thank you for telling me this. I forgive you."

The boat is approaching land. Cold wind tears at them from all around as the approach the tundra wastelands of Lost Edenia.

Kaito and Asgaarth spend some time overlooking the map to the ice caverns, orienting it to their current location and matching it up to other maps they possess. Meanwhile, Sub-Zero and Sareena check the supplies and take enough for a trip that could last up to a week, packing it into bags.

Kaito looks out over the frozen wasteland that is Lost Edenia, seeing mountains rise from wind-stripped plains of ice and snow.

'Should've dressed warmer,' he thinks to himself, generating a thin field of barely-visible electricity around him and through his veins to keep warm.

Asgaarth looks up from the map. "Our options are few. We know the general area of the temple, in the north. We can make for a mountain and scale it and hope that it will give us a clear view; we can make camp at its peak. We can also head directly for the ice caverns, but it will take longer as the mountain is nearer. The ice caverns may be safer, however, since they won't be above ground."
