”-And welcome back to the Junior’s Shift! We’ve got an impressive set of youngsters today, all lined up and ready for the first races of their lives! And here-” the radio fades out of distance as you keep walking, replaced with plenty more noises instead.

“COME GETCHA CAWN! FRESH CAWN!”

“GET YOURSELF A HAWT DAWG! MADE WITH REAL MEAT!”

“Want To Be Heard? Buy Capitalization Software Today!”

You’re currently trawling through the market sector of your hometown, looking for something fun to buy. It’s been about a week since the National Shift ended, and you’ve just managed to get time to yourself again.

The Morosa PR guy had approached you again, and had handed you another card for your stunt with the advertising. “Just that mention pushed our stock up five points, and our market share increased by two percent! You’re looking to be a worthy investment, Mr. Mikoto...”

And that’s not all. Rench is still busy, with nearly hundreds of customers flocking to his warehouse. You’re not exactly sure how he managed to get a loan taken out to buy the floor-space, but apparently he’s already paid it off with all the business he’s doing. And there are more than a few cloaked-and-caped folks coming in, asking Rench for help with some blueprints and diagrams that are absolutely definitely not the latest designs from top companies.

And even Katherine’s been doing well for herself. The racing scene has begun considering you as a force of nature now, and treat Katherine like she was the real winner of the race, which she’s capitulated on.

“I’m going to beat your ass in the World Cup, Mikoto,” she had hissed to you. Her glare quickly changed to a grin as she leaned back in her chair, picking up the menu again. “But for now, I think I’ll go with the Shrimp tempura.”

Yeah, life has been good. And money’s been burning a hole in your pocket for quite a while now.

So you’re looking to make use of it.

You keep walking through the crowded streets of the market, shoving a few people out of the way occasionally to keep moving from stall to stall. You see a few model cars based off your own, and even Mikoto action figures (Watch as its face realistically gets stretched out by G-forces!), which apparently you’re getting a little cut out of each time someone buys one.

Pretty nice.

Further on, you can see the market transition to the cleaner, actually built up area, with proper shops and stores with walls and ceilings.

And you know further on past that are the many warehouses where the frame industry keeps plying their trade, selling thrusters and wheels and engines to anyone with the money, or Favor.

You pause for a bit in the middle of the street, wondering which way to go. People flow around you, some looking back in disgust at the asshole who’s clogging the streets before realizing just who you are, and either quickly walking away to avoid offense, or standing where they are, staring in awe.

>Stay near the stalls. There are some real good food stands around here, selling cor-sorry, cawn, and other delicacies.
>Go up to the nicer section. Maybe you can get some new racing threads made.
>Head on over to the warehouses, see if anything catches your eye.

You keep on moving through the crowded street, eventually escaping the densely packed forest of stalls and small stores, and enter the world of Proper Business, where men and women wear suits and carry around mugs of coffee and dream for the day they can finally jump out the window of their office.

Yeah, there was a real reason why you never wanted to work a desk job. Apparently your dad had had one for a bit, too.

When there was a race in the city, he made it a special point to go right through the building he had previously worked at and destroy everything inside. The race covered it, but he certainly left behind a message for his boss.

You look around the various stores, trying to find something that interests you. There are plenty of custom tailors catering to other racers, making some pretty nice threads, but you know that you want the very best that you can get.

You think about it for a bit.

>Go find the best tailor in the area.

You think about it for a bit, then just decide to call the person who’s done this way too many times before you. You pull your phone out and dial Digs, letting it ring a few times until he eventually picks it up.

“Uh, hello? Mikoto?”

“Yep, it’s me! I wanted your advice on something, if you’d be up for helping me with it.”

“Of course, Mikoto! What do you need?”

“I need a nice and proper uniform. Some threads that really work for me.”

You can almost hear him grin over the phone. “Where are you? Let me come pick you up, and take you to this guy I know...”

It’s not too much longer later that a car drops from the sky on top of you. It manages to stop a few inches away, thankfully, and shifts over to the right and drops the rest of the way. Digs peeks his head out of the side window, his face still split into a giant grin. “So you’re finally ready to get something that looks better than those racing leathers of yours?”

You shrug. “I mean, I still want proper leathers, but-”

“Nope! We’re going to get you looking GOOD, Mikoto. You don’t have a choice about this! Now come on, hop in.”

You look around, noticing more than a few people watching you with...not awe, but definitely a sense of “Is...is that both Digs AND Mikoto?”

You sigh, and slide on into the...well, it’s a fucking frame. You think there’s a passenger seat? You find a comfortable enough place above the exposed matter annihilator (taking a note to report that to the appropriate authorities later) and turn to Digs. “So? Where are we going?”

“Secret!” Digs crows, pushing his foot down onto both thruster pedals, sending the entire frame rocketing upwards into the air. About a hundred metres up, he rotates them and keeps accelerating, this time flying above the entire city, weaving in between the tall buildings scattered througout. “It’s towards the edge, near the suburbs, so you’re going to be waiting a while. Maybe catch some rest?”

You frown, but nevertheless do as he says, leaning your head back on one of the gimbal casings for the thrusters, and after a while you eventually drift off, dreaming of racing...

---

You wake up a little bit later, the rhythmic thrum of the thrusters against your head gently bringing you back to the land of the living. The feeling of the matter-annihilator doing nothing at all is a sign that you’ve finally arrived!

You wonder how long you’ve slept, until you peer out the window.

These ain’t the fucking suburbs.

THIS AIN’T THE FUCKIN’ SUBURBS.

You jump forward into the driver’s seat, not finding anyone else except a note on the seat.

“Hey! When you wake up, come on in!”

You crush the note, and slide on out of the frame, to find yourself in a desert area pretty similar to the Canyons of Canar. Which you know are about FIVE THOUSAND FUCKING KILOMETRES FROM HOME.

Off in the distance you can also see some small house, surrounded by a lovely green manicured lawn and hedges, in stark contrast to the desert.

“For fucks sake,” you mutter, pulling out your phone and stalking towards the house. It seems that your mother had realized it before you had gone beyond ten miles of where you said you’d be. Five hundred twenty one messages, fifty six missed calls.

Just as you kick open the door, the phone rings again.

“Oh, hey Mikoto! I see you’ve woken up!” You can see Digs and some other guy sitting on a large couch, eating out of two gigantic bowls of ramen.

“Digs,” you growl, “what have you done?”

He shrugs. “Just a little trip. It’s going to be worth it, I promise.”

“Then perhaps you’d be interested in taking this call for me.” you hit Answer, and toss him the phone.

“Uh, sure. Hello ther-” Digs is struck dumb by the almost endless amount of rage that flows from the phone, eventually putting a head over the speaker and shouting back, “Madam Yahira! It’s Digs! Not Mikoto!”

“Oh, hi there Digs! Can you explain why my son isn’t even on the same continent?”

“Yeah, I was just taking him out for a-”

“THIS IS YOUR FUCKING FAULT? OH, I SWEAR, I’LL BASH YOUR FUCKING HEAD-”

Digs ends the call, and turns to you. “That’s how you’re treated? I mean, I might be able to get in contact with the Child Protection Services around here.”

You shake your head. “Nah, she’s a great mother. And you did your job too.”

“Which was?”

“Getting the blame off me. Now she can go nuclear on you when you drop me off.”

Digs sighs, then turns to the guy next to him. “Well, here’s the guy. Mikoto.”

He nods. “Yep. You’re a good racer, kid. Guess it’s time to get to work.” He stands up and heads towards the back of the house, opening up a door and descending the stairs just beyond them. As Digs stands to follow, you tug on his arm.

“Where’s he going?” you hiss.

Digs grins. “The workshop. Now come on!” He grabs your hand and pulls you along, down the many, many flights of stairs, to let you out into...

This is a factory. A gigantic, oversized warehouse, almost the size of those that Morosa and other companies manufacture their stuff in.

And as far as you can tell, it’s made by and for one person.

Whoever this guy is.

“So, nice to meet you Mikoto. I’m Dennis. This is my workshop.”

You walk on up to Dennis, offering your hand. “Pleasure to meet you Dennis. Mind if you explain what all of this is?”

He nods, and indicates to the entire industrial complex behind him. “So I usually run one of the textile factories of this planet. This location’s pretty good and out of the way, doesn’t cost much to run, and I figured that I’d start doing some hobby stuff on the side. Digs first approached me about interiors for his frames, but then started asking for uniforms and looks and whatever else.”

“So I started to pick that up. Our company’s doing fashion now, and we’re selling reasonably well in that area. But that doesn’t exactly mean we’re running the catwalk. These are some proper racing clothes, just made to look nice even after you get into a crash at over a kilometre a second. It’s pretty nice.”

“Anyway, point is,” he turns back to you, “Digs said you needed to look good. And I’m willing to help.”

“...Alright then. Do you watch the races at all?”

Dennis nods. “Certainly. Love your driving, by the way.”

“Thanks. So, I was thinking something-”

“Nope!”

“What?”

He smiles. “I’m a good designer. You’re a good racer. Let’s not pretend to be the other. Will you let me just create the aesthetic you want to go for? I’m sure you can change your car to look like what the end product is. That sound fair?”

Disclaimer: I have no sense of fashion, apart from taste in suits. So...you know. Beware

“Go for it. You’re the one who knows what he’s doing.”

Dennis grins and salutes. “Right away.”

---

You’re sitting down in a relatively uncomfortable chair, awaiting the final showing by Dennis. Digs is sitting next to you, casually emptying box after box of popcorn or whatever other sweets he can find lying around the place.

“Almost ready!”

You look up at the voice, and Digs chuckles. “Quick, right? He’s a real mastermind, knows this art like we know driving. Here he comes-”

Dennis bursts out from behind some curtain of various fabrics, bringing out a collection of different kinds of suits and shirts and every other piece of clothing on the planet. Leafing through them all, he pulls out a few items and throws them onto a nearby mannequin, which lets its body change slightly to fit in perfectly.

“Here’s the idea. You’re a force of nature, right? But we can’t just paint you as black. Black is boring, black is just...well, it’s cheesy. What, you’re some gritty, edgy racer type who won’t stop at anything? Cool, join the other seven hundred fucking guys in that line. This...”

He indicates the work next to him. “This is more than that. You’re a force of nature, alright. You’re fucking light itself.”

Despite his words, the clothes don’t seem all that flashy. It seems like a simple white suit, not too much special about it.

When you take a closer look, you do recognize a few differences. For one, the rather nice looking shoes that go with it (notably one of the few non-white things in the get-up) seem a bit more like dress boots with a serious tread on them, and you don’t doubt you could run in them easily. The shirt, a light grey, feels smooth, but as you try to grip it in your hands tightly, it keeps its shape, hardening against the pressure.

(1/2)
>>
>>41673309

“The shirt, and all the rest of the fabric, won’t tear, ever. The coat and trousers will do a good job of keeping you from getting beaten up, And-” he opens the blazer a little more, pointing towards the seams, “-the entire thing’s coated in one-use hover thrusters. Feel free to jump off any building you please. But only once, if you would. Come back each time you do.”

You decide to shrug it all on, and see how it feels. From the start, it just feels elegant. Classy. He’s right about black, too: too edgy, the same feel that nearly every racer gives off. You’re more than them with this. But it still gives the feeling of a racer: the blazer doesn’t seem to be meant to be done up, just left open, and the trousers, on the inside at least, feel like some serious cycle-gear, like the stuff your mother would wear when she used to race. And again, the shoes and shirt (not even being a dress shirt) give a feel of being an elegant racer. Used to be an oxymoron. Maybe not so much any more.

“What do you think?”

well it is your quest, MC design is more or less whatever you please to write. I do find it funny the parallels between the Sin City and Redline worlds, with the crime rings and style. Also I imagine Mikoto like JGL being lanky dark complection and hair.

Then let's go for that.

I'm fine with designing most else, and it's easy enough for BDE, but...I don't know.

I guess I'll keep writing. You're now going to be leaving the place, and making an impression with your new suit.

“Alright. I can work with this. A few changes, though.”

“It’s what I expect. What do you think?”

“Well, black’s out. But so’s white. How about...”

---

The party roars, and the guests mingle, switching empty glasses for full ones of champagne, and taking little pieces of bruschetta to nibble at and giggling at whatever someone else says.

Of course, this being a planet of equal opportunity, with something to interest everyone, there is one topic on every tongue: the races.

As you go higher up the food chain in life, things change. No more thugs and bullies, but a whole new level of scum and evil, to the point where you can unironically use the word dastardly to describe someone. But on this world, no matter the station in life, it’s the Race that pulls everyone together, that makes everyone from the pauper to the playboys work together.

And then there are the few people who transcend that ranking. As the doors open, a few people cast their gaze over to see who enters, only to have their mouths open in shock and their drinks drop from their hands.

You have to say, you really like the reaction you’re getting. You nod at the first few people who decide to acknowledge you, ignoring the others who cast their own glances a bit too late. And so, with Digs by your side (he was willing to take the support role this time round), you progress further into the room.

Almost instantaneously, you’re surrounded, people trying to catch your attention. You cast your gaze over the room, trying to find anyone particularly interesting to join.

>Hey, that’s the PR Guy! Go over.

You don't know, actually.

Turns out I've got family things, so I'm going to have to either resume this later tonight, or tomorrow (if the thread survives).

For now, thanks for coming, and I'll continue to run throughout the week (I might go straight to World Cup next thread because too much writing might mean burning out, though that isn't as much of a problem when I'm writing fun things).

It's the taking off of shoes that gets me.

He walks on in, slipping off those real fucking painful shoes of his, and enjoys that blissful feeling of slinking over to his computer, his feet free from their prison.

He sits on down, tapping the power button with his now free toes, and taps in his password with his left foot as his takes a sip of his beer with his right. After all, if your feet were finally freed from hell, wouldn't you want them to explore being used again?

But then he sees it.

That bastard

>Sorry guys, family stuff, can't write now

It's like it was all for nothing. His lovely feet lose their dexterity, and the beer crashes to the floor. He feels...empty.

I mean, why even live?

You move on over to one of the numerous couches set up around the entire area, along with its very own coffee table and bowl full of chips and nuts and whatever other snacks there are at these kind of high-brow parties. Sitting down, you knock back a few, and indicate for Digs to sit by your side. He himself is all dressed up in his own fancy clothes, looking quite snazzy, and it fits with your own look. You’re here to dominate the party, and you’ll let the other people take care of all the hard work.

Soon enough, people start coming over as you predicted. First up, it seems to be some older gentleman with two girls hanging off both of his arms. He takes a seat in the opposite couch, both girls still draping themselves over him.

“Well, hello there. It’s Mikoto, right?”

“That’s right. Who might you be?”

He laughs. “Ah, I guess you likely still don’t know me. The name’s Drake, Drake Faulkner. I’m a local entrepeneur, and I do a lot of investing in up and coming racers, making sure that they can do the best that they can do in their races. Sometimes they come up with some problems securing the parts that they need, and I can help source them. I was wondering if you were in need of help right now.”

>Yes, that’d be great, thanks!

You lean back in the couch, steepling your fingers in front of you. “It all depends on exactly what you’re offering.”

He grins, “It always takes a little bit extra, you know. To get a little more of the stuff you’re looking for. Racing isn’t just about the race, you know? There’s a lot of other stuff riding on it, including money. And you’ve got to make sure that you cater to those people as well. If you do, you can walk away with quite a-”

“Ah, Mikoto. It appears that this gentleman is wasting your time.” You look up to the newcomer, but some light from the ceiling gets in the way, just leaving behind a silhouette.

“Sorry, and who are you?”

“Apologies. I’m just a fellow racer, is all. No one too important. Listen, my recommendation is moving as quickly as possible away from this guy. He’s trouble.”

Faulkner appears to be getting upset. “What the hell are you going on about, boy? I’m a businessman, and I’m here to make my partners and I a profit. That’s who you are, Mikoto.”

The silhouette laughs. “You’re a product, Mikoto. He’s going to use you, trap you, and then play you like a fiddle. Get him out of your life as soon as possible if you don’t want trouble.”

“A load of bullshit,” Faulkner retorts, turning to you. “This asshole tried to screw over my business a while back, and in the end everyone lost. Don’t let him sway you, or you’re gonna get fucked over as well.

>Silhouette.

Even as they continue their nonsense, you shake your head. “I appreciate both of your efforts to convince me, but in all honesty I can make my own decisions, and I’m capable of supporting myself. If I need you, I’ll let you know,” you say, dismissing them.

Faulkner goes red. “What? I’m offering you the chance of a lifetime here, boy! Do you think anyone just gets access to the resources I’m willing to provide you? Are you insane?”

The Silhouette merely laughs. “Ah, I see. Well, if you ever need me, just call.” he walks off, leaving behind Faulkner in his rage, who soon clears up when he sees his competitor gone.

“This won’t be the end of it, Mikoto,” he sneers, “you’re going to regret rejecting my offer.”

And off he walks, girls on hand.

“Nice job handling those two,” Digs remarks, taking a sip from his drink. You kinda forgot that he was there.

“Who were they?” you ask. It seems people are leaving you guys alone for a bit, after your recent guests.

“Faulkner, he’s the head of one of the gangs. A real piece of work, and the technical ruler of half the sector. He controls a lot of the underworld.”

You whistle. “Damn. And the other guy? I couldn’t recognize him. Or see him at all, really.”

Digs chuckles. “Oh, he’s President Falton.”

“...You’re joking.”

“Not at all. Him and Faulkner apparently go way back, and now pretty much battle each other for control of the sector. To them, racing is just a tool to fight each other with.”

“Wow. Is one of them better?”

“Depends on what you like. If you really want to get chummy with Faulkner, he’ll get you anything you want. If you make friends with Falton, he’ll give you about the same. And both of them will give you some strings attached.”

“...Huh.”

“To be perfectly honest, I’ve dealt with both.” Digs takes a sip of his drink, staring off into the distance. “Remember that recent race I lost? I came in third.”

“Yeah?”

“I threw that.”

(1/2)
>>
>>41675929

You blink a few times, trying to catch up. “You what?”

Digs shakes his head at your expression. “I know, I know. But you know I’m not exactly a selfish racer. I’m trying my best to improve the area we live in, make it into the new capital of this world. Can’t do that without throwing some weight, or money, around. I did as he asked, and we both left on good terms.”

“And what about Falton?”

“Remember the recent World Cup I won?”

“Yeah.”

“Falton suggested I drive a certain route to the end, that went through as many of Faulkner’s buildings as possible. He suggested this to a lot of the other racers, as well.” Digs indicates off into the distance through the windows, “and we went right through them all. Put a real hole in Faulkner’s plans. In return, Falton secured an exclusive contract with some fuel corporation.”

As he ends his sentence, he pulls...

You can’t believe it.

Digs grins as he holds the chunk of Steamlight in his hands. “One for all of us.”

“...That’s insane.”

Digs nods as he puts it back in his pocket. “Oh, for sure. But he did it. Faulkner knows, but he’s accepted I’m a free man. And I’ve never betrayed him on any occasion he associates with me, so he backs off.”

“So,” he continues, looking around the party, “I think you’ve made a good impression. Two of the most powerful men walked up to you, and then walked away. Because you made them.”

You groan. “I can’t think that’s going to be good for me.”

“Depends on how you play it, so good luck!”

Someone interrupts Digs. “Excuse me, are you Mikoto?”

You look up, and nod. “Yes, that’s me.”

The journalist sighs, setting his camera to the side. “Oh, great. Been looking all over for you, man. Didn’t expect you to be here. I wanted to ask a favor.”

“What kind of favor is this?”

He shrugs a bit. “Well, I run a small little news-network. We kinda go over the bios of popular racers, and a LOT of people have been requesting you, ever since your stunt at the last Shift. In the most recent one? It got to a critical point. I was getting death threats over not interviewing you next. I mean, if you’re willing to spare the time-”

You think about it for a few seconds, checking with Digs, but then nod. “I’d be happy to.”

“Perfect! Um. Oh, that’s right! Uh, is it okay if we move from here? Because I’m technically not meant to be here and the bouncer is looking at me funny.”

>Sure, let’s go to my mom’s restaurant.

You begin crossing the hall again, with Digs and the reporter guy in tow. The bouncer goes to forcibly remove him, but you wave him down and he recognizes the journalist is with you, so steps back and lets him pass.

Soon enough you’re outside, and the journalist is fiddling around with some recording equipment. Digs goes on off to leave you to take care of everything, and the journalist waves you on to take a seat.

“Alright, you’re good to go.”

“Well,” you chuckle, “I’m not exactly sure how I’m meant to go on about this. Certainly didn’t expect any interviews a few months ago. Hell, to be where I am right now was a total pipe dream, and I still think that I don’t really belong around here.”

The reporter nods, waving his hand for you to continue, and you do so. “Well, I guess I definitely need to thank Rench for a lot of what got me where I am today. Rench’s my engineer, and as far as I’m concerned he’s doing most of the difficult work. After all, it’s because of his creations that I can pretty much just keep my foot on the accelerator and point my car in the general direction of the finish.”

The reporter interrupts. “But obviously you bring something to the table. What do you think that is?”

You smile. “Driving, I guess? I know I’m good at driving, sure, but that’s not the entire equation, and it never will be. There are plenty of better drivers than me out there, likely in the Shift I just competed in. I was just lucky enough to have one hell of a support system to help me get where I am today.”

“But where do you see yourself? At the Redline?”

You shrug. “To be perfectly honest? I think I have that chance. I’ve got engineers and friends and plenty of people who want to see me win. And I don’t think I’m going to let them down just yet.”

The reporter nods, and shuts off the devices. “Thanks for that, Mikoto. That less aggressive approach was nice. Got to see the real you. At least, part of it.”

You nod, leaning back in the chair and looking up to the sky. “A pleasure to meet you too mate. I don’t think you introduced yourself.”

“Oh!” He stumbles up to give a little bow as he introduces himself. “I’m Ha-hari. I work for myself. I guess.”

A few more moments of silence.

“So...you said you’re going to get to Redline, right?”

You nod. “Of course.”

“What do you think my chances are if I bet on you for Redline itself?”

You think about it, and then grin. “I think that would be a fine bet.”
