You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross-country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain wacky powers and establish yourself as a landmaster.

You’re currently roaming across Canada in the territory of a landmaster named Roger, a squid-faced dude who’s offered to give you a lesson or two on managing your infinite cosmic power.

There’s no way you’ll nail down half the stuff he has to teach you, but compared to the little you know now, it’ll be a whole ton.

--

You feel the places you’ve mastered. The dry summery heat in Muir Woods. The restless winds rifling through the grass on the Field of Rust, another world away. The crystal clear, silent waters of Peyto lake just nearby. You feel the power of the ley lines bending out of their way, joining to you, linking you to the land.
>>
>>41936406

You kind of get it why you haven’t been getting much out of your wells. You just had no idea what you were doing. But now you can feel it all, the raw power of the earth inside you. It’s too much for you right now, but for the time being, that’s okay. You can leave it where it rests, beneath the ground, in the air, in the trees, in the waves.

>Check the character sheet landmaster sections.

“You see it now,” says Roger, somewhere below you.

You’ve only spent a days with the guy, but you’ve learned a hell of a lot about yourself. About... everything. Your connections to your land nodes have never been as clear as they are now.

You come back to yourself, sitting all meditative atop a huge rock, gently sheltered by the shade of trees.

Roger’s at the bottom of the rock facing you, sitting with crossed legs. The Starspawn’s expression is still, his tentacles unmoving as he watches you.

You’re tired. And you can tell he’s tired, too. He’s coached you through a lot, and messing around with the elemental forces that bind the universe together is no easy job. And maybe you’re not the best student. He’s had to explain and demonstrate over and over again how to turn a landwell a hundred miles away into power you can use right here, wherever here is.

I wonder whether giving Moriah a boon would make her death magic more manageable, or cause it to spiral out of control.

>>
>>41936978

Your're forgetting our roots, man. Forgetting who helped us survive instead of ripping out our throat like he was ordered to be enemies of the true imperiate.

Also, What about Wolf? Shouldn't love count for something in this wicked world of ours?
>>
You roll your head around, loosening up your neck. An hour spent sitting on a rock in total peace of thought and mind is uncomfortable as hell. “That was easier and harder than I thought it’d be,” you say, getting your feet under you. You slide down the side of the rock, your toes and claws scraping along the surface to slow your descent.

Roger gets up himself, grunting heavily as stands. “Like I said. Once you think about it in the right way, it opens up,” he says, his Cthulhu tentacles moving just slightly with his words.

You walk over and offer him a hand, forcing the sharpness of your claws to subside a moment so you can get in a good handshake. “Thanks man,” you say.

You shake hands, his wider, six-fingered hand almost enclosing yours. His expression and tone are serious. “Don’t mention it,” he tells you, releasing your hand. “This is between us.”

“And us!” shouts Wyatt.

You look over at the guy, who’s since moved to be sitting up on one of the higher branches of a tree. Ro sits on a branch higher up, ankles crossed. She waves.

You wave back, because hey, tree angel. “Your friend’s got good ears,” you say, narrowing your eyes at the distant Wyatt.

Roger scowls. “He can use corpemancy for almost anything,” he says.

That’s something to keep in mind. And now you feel vaguely paranoid. “Uh. If you ever need drugs and money, shoot me a text,” you say, changing the subject. “I’ll hook you up.”

He gives you a flat look. “I hope you’re joking.”

You shrug. “Just saying.”

And then Reeber comes up from the direction of the lake, soaked to the bone, a still-wriggling fish clasped in his massive jaws.

You greet the hellhound with a friendly head rub. “Somebody’s got some food for the road, huh?”
>>
>>41937134
How about a ball cap?

Or a hot demon mak out session.
>>
>>41937188

While you’re messing around with Reebs, Roger shouts over to his friends. “You ready to head out?”

You see a flash of movement, something massive through the trees. Something that you hadn’t noticed because it’d been almost still. But a second later, Xan, Mori, and Vikrama come up out of the gulley into sight, followed shortly behind by Nemo, who’s hastily pulling on his shirt. “Man. You’re done already?” he shouts back.

“We’ve been here for five hours,” Wyatt yells down at him.

“Don’t be sad, Nemo. This isn’t goodbye forever,” says Vikrama, laughing back at Nemo.

“You never know,” says Nemo, glancing side to side shiftily.

“Someone could die,” Moriah adds, agreeing.

>That’s true. But who?
>Enough death talk. If anybody dies, we all die. I promise.

You walk over glower up the tree at Wyatt and Rowan.

“Heyo,” says Rowan, holding back a laugh.

“Yeah. Heyo,” Wyatt says, sniggering at you.

“Ro, get your angel butt out of that tree and quit goofing around with that muscle wizard,” you say, pointing accusingly at her.

She slips off the branch, swinging out her wings and gliding gently to the ground by your side. “Happy?” she asks, smiling.

“Yeah. It’s a freaking Christmas miracle,” you joke. “Ready to go?”

“Just about,” says Ro, looking back up into the tree and wiggling her fingers at Wyatt.

He returns the gesture.

You and her go over and meet up with the others, Reeber trotting at your side with his fresh fish.

“Have you learned much?” asks Xan.

“I guess,” you say.

“Roger’s pretty good with this kind of thing,” says Nemo, hopping along as he slips on one of his sandles.

He missed some of his shirt buttons, and his belt’s not synched up. Looks like he got dressed fast. And that plus whatever it was you saw out in the woods means only one conclusion. “Dude. Nemo. Did you just go full dragon for those chumps?”

“The only chump here is you,” Moriah says, staring at you expressionlessly.

Ro nudges you in the shoulder. “Oooh,” she says.

“Mori, what are you doing?” you ask.

“She is delivering sick burns,” Xan informs you.

“You’re all such geeks,” you say, scoffing at them.

“They asked nice, and there was nothing better to do,” Nemo says.

“It’s true,” Vikrama says.

You make a frustrated noise. “You owed me first, and now you’re just dragon whoring yourself out to anybody who asks nice!”

Nemo is confused. “What?”

“Whatever. I don’t want to hear it. I’m pissed,” you say. “We’re leaving.”

You all take a moment to say goodbyes and thanks to Roger’s group before hiking back up. Roger’s friends go in another direction with the Starspawn, probably to his landwell, wherever it is.

It seems like it takes a lot longer to get back to the car than it did to get down, but at least there’s a timely bout of wispy clouds to break the back of the sun’s assault on the back your neck.

After some confusion about who’s driving, you kick Reeber out from behind the wheel and Xan takes his place.

“Is this a good idea?” asks Vikrama, looking worriedly at the demon in the driver’s seat.

In answer, Xanissil pulls out her wallet, thumbs out a plastic card, and presses it into Vikrama’s face. “What are you doing?!” she shotus, recoiling and trying to grab her hand.

Rowan and you just watch in amused silence.

Xanissil doesn’t make it easy for Vik. But eventually she manages to get a look at the card.

“Xan’s a licensed driver,” Moriah explains from the back seat. And sure enough the card in Vik’s face is a California driver’s license bearing Xan’s mug on the front.

“No. I received perfect marks on all examinations,” Xan says, aura overflowing with arrogance. “I am a perfect driver.” With self-assured grace, she adjusts the mirrors, puts the car into reverse, swerves backward into the parking lot, and guns the engine. You shoot off with just a hint of squealing tires.

You and Rowan grip the above-door handles. “Let’s ride!” Ro says.

It’s a minute before you’re back on the main road, driving back to the highway. Might not take too long with Xan’s aggressive driving style.

Thought: We may not wanna give the boon away while in a moving car. Rowan had wings explode from back and some other jazz; Vik (or whichever we give second boon to (first is reserved for Harvey)) probably won't have something like that happen, but we still probably shouldn't do this inside of a car.

You leave the scenery to itself for a minute so you can give Rowan a sly look.

“What is that face?” says Ro, sounding worried.

“You and Wyatt sitting in a tree,” you say, without resorting to singsong.

Rowan rolls her eyes. “Grow up.”

“Nah, I get it. It’s that Canadian beard, right?”

“I don’t even know him,” she says, dodging the question.

“Good thing you just spent five hours with him,” Mori pipes in from the back.

Rowan sighs. “Don’t take her side.”

Moriah doesn’t smile, her expression deadpan. “We’re all on the same side.”

“You can just say you think he’s hot if you think he’s hot,” you tell Rowan, egging her on. “I mean, even I think he’s kind of hot, and I’m an objective observer.” You glance back at Moriah. “Not as hot as some people’s brothers I know, you know, but you know, still.”

“That’s great,” Moriah says flatly.

You give an awkward smile. “Yeah... uh. C’mon Rowan. Don’t act like we’re retarded. Just say he’s hot already.”

Ro hesitates. “Well... he is pretty cute,” she says slowly.

You gasp in amazement. “Oh wow. Didn’t hurt yourself too much?”

“I don’t like talking about boy stuff,” she says. “Because then I think about it. And then I jinx it. So if you have to talk about boys, talk about Vikrama and Nemo.”

“Who’s talking about me what now?” Vik asks, turning around from the front passenger seat.

“You being all over Nemo, or vice versa,” you say.

Vikrama gives a deep belly laugh at you. “Really?” she asks, incredulously.

“Well,” you say.

“You’re crazy. He’s a dragon. And he’s a huge dork,” Vik says. “You wouldn’t seriously consider dating a dragon, would you?”

“Me and a dragon would have a lot in common,” you say. “Wings, tails, piles of gold. And his absolute immunity to fire would be nice.” Although Wolfgang’s working on that last one, so you’re not worried.

“Why don’t you date him then?” asks Vik.

“Because she’s dating my brother,” says Moriah.

“She’s just joking,” says Rowan.

“So am I,” Moriah replies, sounding exactly the same.

Ro gives you a confused look.

“The Crowthers, am I right?” you say, spreading your hands. “They’re all a hoot. But really, fire breath. It’s cool. What’s cooler than fire breath?”

“Not being burned to death by flames?” asks Vik. “Okay. Maybe if I was a demon from the depths of hell, dragons would be on the table, but as it stands, I’m operating on a strictly all human operations model.”

“Boring,” says Rowan. “Don’t you want to live life on the edge, ever fearful of having your head bitten off when he comes in for a quick smooch?”

Vik looks unconvinced. “Umm... About that.”

“Do not let them sway you on this matter,” says Xan, riding the back bumper of the sedan in front of you. “If you show weakness they will destroy you.”

“Thanks for the heads up, darling,” says Vik.

“By the way, Vikrama,” you say. “Now that I’ve got all my new wells sorted, I actually have a couple pockets of ley magic ready for deployment.”

“Great,” says Rowan. “Ley them on me.”

“Don’t steal Sierra’s jokes,” says Moriah. “They only get pity laughs coming from her.”

“I can’t help it, we live together. It rubs off,” she demurs.

“Pity laughs?” you ask, outraged.

“Okay,” says Vikrama, thoughtfully. “For my first boon, I wish I had functional wings. Oh. And my wish wouldn’t backfire.”

“Eh heh hehheh. Funny,” you say, not humored in the least. “Just wanted to let you know so... one’s coming your way, sooner or later.”

She smiles brightly at you. “Cool beans,” she says.

“And who’s the second for?” Ro asks. “I could always use another set of wings, but I doubt that’s your plan.”

“Give it to Ranthix,” says Moriah.

You stare at her. “What?”

She goes quiet. “It was just a thought.”

“Give it to me!” says Xan. “I will show you how real wings are grown!”

“My wings are real, and no, you’re not getting this one,” you say.

Xanissil scoffs.

“Harvey’s getting it,” you say. “He called dibs, and he said he’d go out with his elf crush for it. Plus he’s kind of my little brother, so.”

I thought Mori was gay. First time she saw Sierra's demon form, her jaw hit the floor and the only thing she says afterwards is "you're beautiful". Then there was all the stuff where she was moody and we asked Wolf what was up with that and he made vague grumblings about "the person she likes" before changing the subject.
>>
>>41939581
That and she admitted sometime ago that she really likes the Thul'tal (however it's spelled).

Jesus. The only thing that was made very clear was that Sierra is to be straight. Mori could still have a crush on her. She is after all a hellion and attracted to power just like Wolfgang. And she weird around Sierra. Like getting overly worried about her and stuff. Not to mention that Sierra was one of the first people to really connect with her (being part demon) and one of her first real friends (i think). Going from being a loner to having friends that actually care is a pretty big emotional step.

I am not trying to go yuri on this quest. I am saying that affectionate feelings from Mori towards Sierra would be perfectly natural. Even if Sierra would not reciprocate them.
>>
>>41939861
>dammit this is STILL A THING???!??
Just because Sierra is straight doesn't mean that Moria is.

I am not shiping them or anything but It does seem plausable that Moria could by gay/bi
>>
>>41940293
>It does seem plausable that Moria could by gay/bi
Or asexual-romatic.
>>
>>41940305
How is that not bisexual with a low sex drive?

Legitimately asking.
>>
>>41940318
It's not a low sex drive, it's the absence of one. You don't have a gender/sexual preference not because you're equally attracted, but because you're utterly non-sexual. You have a romantic desire for emotional intimacy, but nothing more.

Technically, someone who's asexual can even still have a gender preference, if they prefer certain classically masculine/feminine traits in a partner. For example, like big, tall, strong dudes.
>>
>>41940381
>It's not a low sex drive, it's the absence of one.
Still seems like bisexual to me, their ideal partner could be either gender, so that looks like it fits in the category of bisexual, even if they don't want to get fluids over eachother.

“All the magic’s contingent on him fulfilling his end of our dark pact,” you inform her, in no uncertain terms. “If he bitches out, I'm giving it to an apple pie or something and then eating it in front of him.”

“My. How vindictive of you,” Rowan says. “Knowing him and Sydney... it might not actually happen.”

“Well. It’d better,” you say.

“Maybe,” says Rowan, doubt in her voice.

“What?”

“Just... don’t be too mean to him,” she says.

You sigh. “Well. We’ll see how he does,” you say. Although, to be honest, you’ll probably give him the boon whether or not he wusses out. He did go through the pain of making you a badass invulnerable chain mail shirt to help keep you safe. “He’d better step it up. Reeber needs one too, and I have to make hard decisions.” You lay a hand on Reeber’s shoulder as you say this, and he looks up hopefully at you.

“You’ll find more boons,” says Vikrama. “We’re only in stage two or three of this trip.”

“And there’s that.” Might not have to make a tough call. Who knows?

--

After staying the night in a hotel in Calgary, the Trans-Canada highway takes you through such interesting locations as... Dennis. And Medicine Hat. Great.

But fiddling aroudn with maps in the back, it’s time to make the call. What the hell park are you going to next? There’s really nothing on the highway for millions of miles. You’ll have to make a detour.

Squinting at the map and consulting with your consultants, you eventually come up with the plan to go to Great Sand Hills, the sandiest place you’ve heard of in Canada, and also someplace it’d be easy to find a well or two.

You get there around two. ‘There’ as it turns out is a pretty podunk little town. You drive through, following your map through smaller and smaller roads, to the point where you and Vikrama calculate should have a well.

The terrain is dominated by open sky, hills, and low scrub brush and grass. No trees or forests here – you can see for a mile in every direction, easy.

>>41940422
You're trying to make sense out of tumblr terms, m8. Don't do that. No good will come of it.
>>
>>41940422
It's really not. Bisexual still implies a sexual attraction - that you're sexually attracted to either sexes - not that you lack a gender preference. Asexuality is a lack of any sexual attraction at all.
>>

Not much to write home about, at least not until you see the dunes. The grass and shrubs end and turn into a bleached sea of sand.

“It’s white,” Xan remarks, impressed.

“It’s sand,” you reply.

“I expected something else,” she says, sticking her face to the window so she can see better.

“This is about what I expected,” says Rowan, snapping a bunch of pictures on her phone

As you drive in the middle of nowhere in this grassland-meets-Sahara desert park, you feel the magnetic pulsing of land magic.

You give Moriah the double tap on the back of her seat. “This is us,” you say.

Mori nods and unceremoniously turns off the poorly maintained, single-laned road and parks in the grass.
You jump out, happy to stretch your legs. A strong wind picks up, a little sandy from the aforementioned sand, smelling of stagnant water and open air.

It feels like the well should be somewhere around here, nearby. You hasten to the top of a nearby dune, your Jordans sinking into dry sand with every step.

You reach the top before anybody else except Reeber, and settle on your knees on the crest. Down the other side, in the impression between dunes, you see the well.

The star shimmers with a tumultuous grey and red inner light, bursting with power.

“What do you see?” asks Rowan, coming up the dune behind you.

“Found the well, but it’s claimed already I think,” you say, sliding down the sand toward the well.

“What are you doing?” asks Ro, just making it to the top.

“Just having a closer look,” you say, glancing back at her. You creep up on the well, but stop well short of it.

An overpressure of land magic presses down on you, like you’re underwater or somebody turned up gravity. It makes you feel sluggish. Definitely not normal. Definitely claimed.

You don’t know who’s claimed this thing, but you didn’t come all the way out here to leave, and claiming a well nearby seems like a risky move without consulting the locals first.

You focus your will on your hand, bring up a knuckle, and knock on the well. Each tap sounds in a great, cacophonous tone, like you were banging a thunder sticks together in a Gothic cathedral, and flashes with a muted pulse of light.

“Impressive,” says Vikrama, who’s joined by the others at the top of the nearby dune.

“Is this the best idea?” asks Moriah.

“Too late to ask that,” you reply, stepping back from the well.

“They might not be as friendly as Roger,” Mori warns. “It could be Ossifera’s well.”

“You know, considering they’d have to travel to their nearest well to get here, it might take them a while to come over,” says Rowan.

>Unless they know how to fold space or create planar rifts wherever they are. Then they’ll probably be here in about ten seconds.

“We’ll give them an hour,” you say, sitting down on the sand about thirty feet from the well. “Longer than that, either they want to be left alone or they’re slow. And if they’re slow, they’re probably low-key enough to be in my weight class.” Like Hugo. You could beat the crap out of Hugo if you had to fight him again.

You look back at the others and wave them away. “Back up out of sight,” you say. “If they’re dangerous, I’ll run off. And if they’re not dangerous, I don’t want to freak them out.”

Xan goes prone at the top of the sand dune and inches back out of sight. Ro follows suit, and they pull Vikrama and Moriah with them.

Reeber comes over and sits by you, sensing the tension. You’d send him away, but you feel better with him sitting near you. Like he could protect you if things got bad. (+4 Stress: 26/103)

You’re not waiting for long.

The well begins spinning, and then rapidly spirals open into a hellish grey maelstrom, wider and wider, bigger and bigger, until you’re forced to scramble backward out of harm’s way lest you get consumed by the vortex.

A set of silvery claws bigger than you are reaches forth from the well rift and crashes down in the sand, gleaming like blades. They’re connected to huge scaly hand. Muscles tense and the claws dig down until they find purchase. And then a vast set of shoulders ten feet, fifteen feet wide hauls itself from the midst of the crackling storm of power, steely scales glistening in the daylight.

The mountainous form of scales, claws, teeth, and wings snakes out from the portal. The incredible mass extracts itself from the now-shrinking storm with a singular, subtle, serpentine grace.

The well contracts as the reptilian creature snakes its tail out from the earth, spiraling shut with a wall of sound until it cuts off to a single point of contentious red light.

It’s huge. It’s way huge. And it’s red as rubies, at least on its breast, stomach, and underside. The rest is iron grey, the hue of forged steel. And the rest is a lot. It’s a fucking dragon. You watch in awe, nearly flat on your back, barely supporting yourself with your hands. Reeber tenses by his side and growls.

The dragon’s head is as big as a grand piano, with swooped, ridged horns. The bones of its face jutting out at every angle of its jaw or brow. Recessed into its ponderous skull, bright gold eyes the size of your fist catch the light and glance to and fro before quickly settling on you.

The dragon sucks in a cavernous breath through its nostrils, the sheer sound of it rattling through its ribcage, audible right in your ear. Then it exhales heavily, its huge mouth twisting downward into a leer, exposing a clear row of perfect saber-like teeth. A brief flash of flame spouts from its nostrils, and a cloud of ember-filled choking smoke billows out from the cracks between its teeth.

It settles on its haunches and plants its fore claws into the sand before it, then draws up to full sitting height, its colossal neck flexing as it lifts its head to face down at you. The dragon stretches its wings wide to either side and gives the tiniest forward flick. The membranes stretch thin, light filtering through to show a web of veins and capillaries. And then they catch the wind. Like great sails, they hurl it forward at you as a hard sweep of wind. It hits you in the face with a sudden burst, blowing your hair back.

The smell of fire suffuses the air, and you feel a broad antagonism wider than anything you’ve ever experienced. It’s not intense or overwhelming, just... big. Because it’s a fucking dragon.

And then the dragon speaks in a voice of iron and thunder. “Hellborn,” the dragon growls, drawing out the word at length. It leans forward, bringing its massive head around so it can narrow a single golden eye at you.

And then it narrows its eye even more until its squinting at you. Like, squinting really hard. “Ah. I know that scent.” You feel each word spoken in your bones. “Shadow blood. Beckhoff,” says the dragon. It draws back, and you’re washed over with its immense satisfaction with itself with having successfully recognized you. But that satisfaction turns to smoking irritation. “You’ve broken our arrangement, Beckhoff.”

A storm of arcane power overflows your senses, almost blinding you.

“Sweet mercy,” you breathe, scrambling backward a pace. It’s too big. Too powerful. It could fucking kill you any second it wanted, and it’s angry. (+4 Stress: 30/103, -1 Sanity: 91)

Maybe you can run. The car’s not too far away, and once you got over the dune, you’d be out line of sight. But it can move faster than you, so that’s not going to work. (+3 Stress: 33/103)

Reeber’s growl brings you back to the present. You’re on your back in front of a dragon. That’s stupid. You need to keep your cool. You can handle this. You can handle anything.

You scramble to your feet, and try to stand up straight. “I uh... wha...” your voice fails. You clear your throat and start again. “W-what arrangement?” you ask, loudly.

The dragon shifts forward, sneering at you with its teeth. You manage to hold your ground. No good to show weakness in front of Smaug. “The arrangement where you stay in your California dream, far away from the heart of my continent,” the dragon snarls, sending chills down your spine. “Not yet a century and your mind loses hold. You disappoint me, Beckhoff.”

You’re dunked in a sea of the dragon’s impatience.
>>
>>41943379

So she knew your dad and had a deal with him. And now you’re breaking that deal and she thinks you’re him. Probably should try to fix that. “We don’t have any agreements,” you try to tell the dragon. “You’re thinking of my dad. Who’s not me. And I knocked on your landwell because... I figured we should... hammer out our own arrangement?” Yeah. That sounds good.

The dragon squints down at you again, sniffing twice. And then the corners of its huge mouth turn downward. “You do smell... different,” it says, light catching its scales as it tilts its head, forcing you to shield your eyes . The dragon’s frown turns severe. “With what name are you named, and title are you titled, Hellborn?”

You’re guessing the dragon’s not just looking for your first name here. But it strikes you that you don’t even know this dragon’s name. Unless this is Ossifera. She fits the bill, if she’s a she. But how do you introduce yourself to a dragon?

>>
If there’s one thing you know about dragons, it’s that there’s no halfway about it. You go all in if you want to make a mark.

You dredge up some of the junk about introductions Orias taught you while brushing up on your Heltic, and You focus your will. You feel the air ringing in anticipation of what you plan to do. “I am Sakheris,” you say, the light in the air dulling in color for a fraction of a second at the sound of your demonym, “spawn of David, spawn of Corithis, heiress of the throne of Chthonia, and rising Imperiate.”

The dragon’s impatience evaporates like a morning dew. “Spawn of Corithis,” the dragon rumbles, suspicion and thoughtfulness in its tone. Then it scents the air with a darting tongue. “Spawn of... Corithis. Blood of Inferia. Blood of... Belphegor. Royal blood.” Then a smile as ferocious as a shark. “A surprise.”

You try to keep yourself aloof. You think this dragon’s the type to identify with that kind of thing. “You can call me Sierra,” you say. “And your name?”

The dragon cozies in low to the ground, smile sharpening. “Behold the spawn of Ironwrack, Mistress of the Whited Plains, Ossifera the Splendorous,” she says, eyes lidded in resplendent joy in her own conceit. “So you seek an arrangement with me.” She hums nonchalantly, the vibrations tremoring in the ground underfoot. “What would one such as you seek from one such as I?”

An impish, predatory feeling blasts from her without end. The saturating of emotion makes swallowing difficult. (+4 Stress: 37)

“Basically that I don’t mess around with you, you don’t mess around with me,” you say. “You have your sweet white plains to look after, I’ve got my golden coast.”

“Hmm,” says the dragon, tapping a claw on her teeth. Each tap clicks loudly enough for you to hear, a few dozen yards away.

“And...” this might be the stretch “I was kind of hoping I could maybe take a well or two on your territory.”

Ossifera’s pleasant expression turns sour. “Hmm,” she says, more harshly this time. The talon clicks on her teeth grow louder, more forceful.

“Like... preferably around here,” you say, gesturing to the dunes around you. “Y’know. If you got any spares.”

Ossifera shifts swiftly onto her feet with speed unexpected for something so large, and starts taking long, measured steps around the well, choosing each place for her claws with care. You’re forced to turn to keep your eyes on her. “What will you give me in return for this well which you so shamelessly demand?” she asks.

You doubt you really have anything valuable enough to tempt a dragon, but might as well find out what order of magnitude you’re talking here. “Name your price,” you say. “Or what you want. You know. Ballpark it for me, and we’ll talk.”

Ossifera spreads her wings a little. Though her little bit is your a whole freaking ton. Sailboat sized wings. “I see how it is,” she says slyly, a smug look on her huge dragon reptile face. “You seek more than one or two wells, a paltry sum.”

“Uh. Kind of?” you ask, not really following her logic.

“Well well well,” she says coyly, settling down against a sand dune and causing a minor avalanche onto her back, which she brushes off with a slight flap of her wings. “Perhaps we can talk.”

“Okay?”

“You are desirous to expand your influence, to retake your throne,” says Ossifera.

You’re not sure she’s on the same topic as you.

“Your father holds the key,” says the dragon. “His hold on the Pacific Coast is great. He is not without resources there.”

“Uh. Yeah. I guess,” you say. She definitely doesn’t know your dad’s dead.

“But his wells... you must know the locations of the Californian landwells, at least a great number of them,” she says.

“Uh...”

“If he could be removed,” says Ossifera, eyes glinting at some faraway fantasy. “If he could be removed... yes, his power would be yours... and yours to share.”

“That’s not exactly what I was talking about,” you say.

“The betrayal of his spawn will cut deep. Together we will annihilate him,” says Ossifera, totally in her own world now. “Then, then you shall reveal five hundred landwells to me. The remainder of Beckhoff’s you will sequester to yourself – he has many, more than enough for one of your meager development to retake Halth from its degeneracy.”

“I don’t think that’s going to happen, as much as that sounds awesome,” you say, kind of horrified with her plan.

Ossifera delights in her dealings. If she were a cat, she’d be purring. But she’s not a cat. She’s a fucking dragon. “The land there will more than make up for the price you incur on this plane,” she explains, as if to a child. “And... as a token of this alliance, after he is destroyed, you may travel freely in my realm. Freely. And claim whichsoever unclaimed wells you happen across.”

You don’t know what’s worse. The fact that she’s completely serious now about killing your dad, or the fact that her whole plot kind of might have already happened in real life. To you. And maybe killed your family and screwed up your whole life. (+24 Stress: 63)

But it wasn’t her. She doesn’t even have a clue what happened. She’s just a random freaking dragon on the plains who can’t even tell you from your dad cause of cataracts or something. (-3 Stress: 60)

You don't know if talking with Ossifera is really worth it. She's a huge jerk. Literally.

Your flat denial of her alliance shakes Ossifera out of her perfect dream world. “Why stray so far from your sunny realms then, Sierra?” she asks, a torrential outflow of spite smashing into you. “Why consult the Mistress of the White Plains, if the attainment of pure power was not your scheme?”

“I’m not on some time table, I’m immortal,” you say. “I don’t have to burn every bridge I cross. My deal is more like this. I get a well on your turf. You know, just one. And then you get a landwell on my turf. Again, just one. But you can get some sweet beachfront property or whatever.”

The dragon scoffs, a cloud of smoke oozing up out from her mouth. “Beckhoff would allow this, if you will not betray him as you say,” she says, her voice harsh. “Decades he has denied me place on the sea.”

“Well, decades you denied us a place in the Great Plains,” you guess, “so maybe it’s time to even it out?”

Ossifera settles down into the sand, leaning on a massive elbow and peering at you with utmost suspicion. She resumes clicking a talon on her teeth, the clicks getting on your nerve. (+2 Stress: 62) “A place on the Pacific is... almost enough to allow Beckhoff to mar my realm,” she says lazily, gazing down at her shining claws.

“Almost?” you ask.

The dragon clicks her teeth again. (+1 Stress: 63) “I would have evidence of your complicity in our bargain,” says Ossifera.

You narrow your eyes. “What kind of evidence?”

“Uncontrivable,” she clarifies, disdainfully.

“Like a contract?” you ask.
>>

“I said uncontrivable,” says Ossifera. “No one reads contracts before they sign them. You would plead innocence and Beckhoff would sweep it away. No. It must be something... personal. A symbol of your betrayal.” She circles close to you, her head mere yards away. Dragons man.

“A symbol of my betrayal,” you say, forcing yourself not to step back. “Like what?”

Ossifera hisses contentedly, a jet of hot, dry air hitting you in the face. “What is something you are known for? Some skill or craft?”

Skill or craft. You don’t have many of those you can think of that would make symbols of betrayal.

“It can be anything,” she presses, inching closer, eyes intent.

You pat yourself down, trying ot think of something. Then you feel your little moleskin sketchbook in your back pocket. “I kind of like drawing stuff, I guess,” you say. “That’s a craft and a skill, right?”

The dragon bars its teeth at you, maybe smiling, maybe threatening. “You are an artisan. Yes,” she says to herself.

“You want me to draw something you can use as proof for my dad that I said you can have a beach house,” you say, trying to keep the story straight.

She nods once, barring more teeth. “By your hand shall it be done,” she growls.

I think we should consult a lawyer first.

Us in our full demon state, riding Ossi-chan as she flies over a beach, melting the sand to glass with fiery breath.

Perfect. 0 downsides.

Oh fuck, trolling a dragon.

why the Halth are you guys voting to give the dragon away the sketchbook that was lovingly gifted to us by our asexual lesbian BFF?

Totally agree with consulting our magic friends first, if just for artistic opinion.

I read the separate option to get paper instead of the sketchbook to mean that we'd give the book away if we picked that, but I guess it'd be okay to rip a page out.

going off to get paper is a good excuse to consult with our friends, though, for the people who want to do that.

"On second thought, I've changed my mind. Let's not complicate things. I leave you alone, you me alone, deal?"

This whole thing implies that Dad was strong enough to contest this dragon.

You keep yourself composed, even though convulsions of laughter want to gush out of your face. A landwell from a dragon for a hand-drawn picture. Not a bad trade. “Man. You’re lucky I got my handy dandy notebook,” you say, taking your moleskin sketchbook out.

“So luck would have it,” Ossifera says, lying down in the sand and taking up an imperious posture, head held high so she can look down her snout at you.

Upon checking your mechanical pencil, you feign it not working. “Luck has it that I have no lead though,” you say. “Hold on a sec, I’ll be right back.”

“Do not rush anything,” she commands.

You skedattle away from your dragon subject, and climb back up the dune till you get to where your friends are hiding.

“She wants to kill your dad!” Vikrama whispers urgently to you once you come into sight.

“That’ll be pretty difficult ,” you whisper back. And then you stop whispering. “Guys. I need help with this. Legitimate help.”

“With the symbol of betrayal?” asks Ro.

“For her sketch drawing,” Moriah answers.

“Mori, your family is lawyers,” you say. “Are there any legal complications if I draw a picture as proof I went behind my dead dad’s back and sold off some of his beachfront property that he doesn’t technically own anymore?”

Moriah stands up, brushing sand off herself. “How much are you willing to pay for my consultation?”

“Zero Canada dollars,” you say.

“No. There are no legal complications,” says Moriah, unconvincingly.

“What if I made it zero American dollars?”

Mori doesn’t answer your question. “Let’s draw dragons,” she says, zipping open her backpack and pulling out her own sketchbook. This one’s got a dozen painstakingly drawn skulls all over the cover, covered with ivy and thorny roses.

“Okay. But let me do the talking,” you say.

“It’s the day I’ve been training for!” Vikrama says, borrowing an extra notebook from Moriah.

That would rouse so much suspicion.

Xan gives everyone a disapproving look. “This is a dumb plan,” she says. “She will discover your father is dead.”

“It’s not like she’s going to fly over California all the time, and it’s not like she’d be able to see wells from the air if she did,” you say. “She’ll just teleport in to her little place on the ocean. She doesn’t want to get caught trespassing. And if she gets riley, Isaac can call the Air Force on her. Dragons are cool and all, but c’mon, let’s be honest. An F-22 would knock anybody on their tail.”

Xan takes a deep breath. “Sigh,” she says, resigning herself to her fate.

Everybody heads back down with you.

“Who are these whelps?” Ossifera asks.

“Just my friends and trusted advisors,” you say, settling down in the sand with the others and getting your sketchbook ready. You hold out your pencil to do some general proportion checks. Cliché, but you don’t get to draw real dragons every day. You’re usually working from stupid internet pictures or your imagination.

Xan stands behind you and scowls at Ossifera with her arms folded

“They have fire in them,” the dragon observes, her tone neutral.

Vikrama’s face will probably break if she smiles any wider. She’s already going to town with her own adventure in art.

“You got any requests?” you ask the dragon. “Maybe you at your new beach house with a friend?”

Ossifera considers the question carefully, tapping her teeth again. But this time it doesn’t rile you up at all. “It must be clearly in your style,” she says.

“Maybe I should be in it too,” you note calmly. “Just to cement the betrayal part.”

“Yes... that would be wise,” she says.

“You know,” you say, “I could use a photo reference too. Just to make sure you look like you and I look like me.”

“I do not pretend to know the intricacies of your trade,” she says, self-importantly.

“Well, just stay there,” you say, getting up and heading over.

“What are you doing?” she asks, glaring down at you.
>>
>>41947515
>dragon selfies
My god.
>>
>>41947515

“Trust me, I’m an artist,” you say, situating yourself by her massive tree-trunk sized arms. “Mind if I...?” You gesture at her.

She looks disinterested. “Do what you must.”

You try not to look too giddy as you lean on the dragon’s arm and make yourself look all casual. Ossifera’s scales are cold, but you can feel a soft warmth beneath them, and they kind of give a little when you put your weight on them, the muscle underneath being more pliable.

Rowan’s already in position filming the whole thing, but now she’s taking a bunch of pictures. “Hold it, hold it!” she says, snapping off a dozen shots while you try out different things. This goes on for about thirty seconds. You’re not willing to try Ossifera’s patience any more than you have to, so you content yourself and hurry back to your impromptu art studio.

You orient your sketchbook properly and hash out a few guidelines. You can’t fit all of her on the page and still have you be a meaningful contribution, so you decide to go for a closeup, allowing Ossifera’s head to fill most of the page, and putting yourself off to the side, leaning casually as can be on her neck.

You put a slightly disgruntled but smug look on her face, since that’s the expression she’s wearing as she towers over you, but you put yourself there shooting the viewer a thumbs up and a stupid smile. Funny enough, you needed the reference photo for yourself more than for her, since you’ve got Ossifera as a live subject but you can’t see yourself so well.

After you get the basics, you shade in the details and get some hard lines in there, giving it a kind of more stylized look like Ossifera wants. For good measure, you try to get it across in the picture you’re on the beach. Luckily there’s plenty of sand around for you to mercilessly copy.

Your monochromatic window of your version of the world develops nicely. You just need to get in some of the detailing, but you have a feeling it’s going to turn out great.

pffffshw NA will be ours. Ossifera can go fuck herself.

I'm wondering what David was actually capable of that was enough to give this dragon pause. We've seen exactly one offensive Verwelken power and it's not great against armored foes. The rest are pretty much all mobility or stealth and that don't help much.

We'll need to try to get her and Hasturr to kill eachother and worm Lucifer's boss into helping us finish off the winner of their exchange. Maybe get Roger's dad in on the fun.

>>41947867
I think it has more to do with him owning the west coast. Dude had to have been crazy strong from all those wells
>>
>>41947895
Well that's the thing. She owns the entire Great Planes and some other crap surrounding it.

Unless the West Coast is unusually well-dense, or he also had wells off-plane, she has far more wells than David ever did on top of her base race being stronger.

Compared at 0 wells, dragon beats half Verwelken. So I'm wondering how pumped Verwelken powers is enough to ward off more pumped dragon powers.
>>
>>41947924
>Great Planes
Great Plains*
>>
>>41947924
It's not all about wells.

David was as old as Isaac. And probably fought against him in WW2. Th whole Nazi thing. Then he probably had shit in Halth cause he was married to it's ruler. But he definitely also had tons of personal non landmaster related power.
>>
>>41947823
Now we know where Sierra gets all her sick burns.
