The sound of Himawari's body slamming into the wood of the carriage causes you to flinch, and for a moment you're in shock of what to do. Time seems to slow to a halt, and the memory of the promise that you made to Naruto sends fire through your blood. You step forward and draw a kunai, planning to stab the arm. It's about the only thing you can do at this moment, and you hope that Himawari isn't hurt.

Before your first footstep even hits the ground, however, a blast of air knocks you back. Your eyes turn from the hand to Himawari, who's thrown her hands down by her sides. All around her a wave of chakra blasts her free, and she begins to spin mid-air, before shouting the name of her technique.

"Rotation!"

Chakra swirls around her and dust is thrown up, and you have to hold up your arms to cover your face. The wall of the carriage is demolished, and fragments of wood fly everywhere. There's a small crater of dirt where the prison once was, and the strange man is sent flying backwards and crashing into a pine tree. Himawari lands and turns around, and all of the Leaf Genin step forward in a line. The Jounin are already beside the strange man, Hanto's blue flames present on his hands. He looks down at the supposed Cultist, frowning.

"What have you done with the criminal!? How did you switch places!? Talk!" He lifts the man up by the scruff of his shirt, and the pale stranger begins to laugh. When he turns his head to look at Hanto, you get a clear view of him. He seems fairly young, in his twenties, and has platinum blonde hair. He's dressed in the same simple rags that the prisoner was. His jaw is sharp and angular, and his eyes seem strained and tired, as if he's had difficulty sleeping. As his laugh drones on, you're reminded of what a hyena is supposed to sound like. The high pitched cackling is animal.

Suddenly the body melts into mud, an earth clone substitute. Hanto and Mirai, shocked, return to your sides, and look around themselves. Hanto grumbles. "To think that it would be him of all people to show up on this mission. I thought he had left the land of Lightning in search of expansion for his cult.."

Mirai turns to him. "You wanna tell me what the hell just happened?"

Hanto nods, grimly. "Listen up, everyone. This is the leader of the Jashin Cult, and they've been extremely active here in the land of lightning. The country has been keeping it a secret, and it's difficult to come by information about their organization's actions. I happen to have a contact in the Land of Lightning who feeds me information, as it never hurts to be informed about the criminal underworld."

He slowly circles, surveying the area. You've never seen Hanto look so alert, and it seems he's completely snapped out of his drunken haze. "The man that we've just seen is the leader of this Cult, and he's a powerful rogue shinobi of the land of Lightning. An S-ranked criminal, directly responsible for every murder related to Jashinism. He was dangerous before.."

The cackling persists, somewhere in the trees above. "But if the Jashinists have unlocked the secret of Immortality, then it's safe to assume he would be one of the firsts to master it. We've been deceived somewhere along the line. There never was a prisoner. Somehow this man, Makoto, has used our village to infiltrate his way back into the land of the Lightning, where his presence is strongest. Now...He thinks to kill us, and remove all the evidence."

Mirai draws a Wakizashi from her back, gripping it tightly with both hands. "I see. Should we send the kids back to the Leaf, and have them make everyone aware of the situation?"

Hanto shakes his head. "It's not that simple. The ambush earlier obviously wasn't enough to impede our progress. It's been bothering me. I know that the Cultists have actual shinobi as troops, and the usage of simple footmen, albeit immortal, seems to be a waste against two Jounin. However, for Six Genin, it could be a problem. It seems likely that they were only pretending to be defeated, for the sake of boxing us in from the rear once we pass them. There's no doubt that the guards at the gate are dead."

Ai turns towards Hanto, kunai drawn. "Not to mention we're unfamiliar with the area. Returning with speed would be difficult."

Yosuke steps draws his spear. "Then it's settled. I'll lead you all back to the Leaf, and help you through the cultists on the way."

Hanto lowers his head, and sighs. "It's what they expect us to do. There's no doubt that they want you to take that path, and seven isn't that much greater than six. I suggest that you all stay here, and fight! Why don't you show us your prowess, and lay your lives on the line!? We will protect you, and you will support us! Stay in a tight group, and cover all angles!"

Mirai shakes her head. "Hanto, if what you say is true about this Makoto guy, then isn't that crazy!?"

The wind begins to swirl around your sensei in a familiar fashion, and you sense he's gathering his strength. "Trust me! Immortal or not, he's only made of flesh!"

Your sensei turns and looks down at you, smiling. "What do you say, everyone!?"

Ai remains silent, her eyes scanning the forest constantly. She is prepared to stay.

Himawari shuts her eyes for a moment, and focuses. The veins near her eyes strain with effort as she activates her clan's dojutsu. "Byakugan!" She takes a fighting stance, bending into the uniform taijutsu stance of the Gentle fist. "I'll find him, he can't hide from me!"

Shinji holds up his hands, and insects begin to spread through the forest in a cloud. "If he disturbs my bugs, I'll know about it. He won't be able to make a move towards escape once I've surrounded the area."

Akahiko leaps down from Kayo's head, and the wolfish girl grins. "Akahiko and have a lock on his scent, he's been riding with us the whole time! It's gotta be the same guy, he's totally the same."

The Jounin look at each other, and smile. The motivation of squad thirteen, and the sensory prowess of squad eight in action. Himawari suddenly shouts, pointing to the ground. "He's burrowing through the earth somehow! He's heading right towards us!"

Hanto kneels down. "Everyone, get up to the trees!" All of the shinobi leap upwards just as Makoto bursts from the ground, wielding two longswords. You're not sure where he drew the weaponry from, until you see various scratches in his arms. Ai, in a branch next to you, comments on this. "He's cut himself to create reverse summoning seals. He had weapons sealed in preparation for this fight. Sensei is right, this was planned.."

Makoto lands, looking up in the trees. "So, you've got a sharp group of kids, eh!? It saved their lives for a minute more, Hanto and Mirai! Why don't the both of you come down here so I can finish this!"

Your sensei turns to everyone. "We're going to engage him. Everyone, I want you to understand that if he catches you, it will put all of us in jeapordy. Allow me and Mirai to draw his attention, and I need you all to put him through every inconvenience that you can. Genjutsu, traps, long distance Ninjutsu. Just do not engage him in Taijutsu, because you will not survive. Let's go!"

Mirai and Hanto land in front of Makoto, and they square off silently for a moment. There's tension in the air, and you lock eyes with Kichiro. He seems nervous. Looking at Ai, unsurprisingly, she's stoic. Kichiro looks over at Shinji, and back to you. "Okay, Takeshi, you're the best at coming up for plans in our squad. You and Shinji need to come up with a plan of action for the rest of us."

Shinji nods in agreement, as does Himawari and Kayo. The bespectacled boy replies in earnest. "Your friend is correct. If we're not coordinated, there will be gaps in our defenses. I believe that for now we should wait and examine his abilities. The other option is to strike now and try and give our sensei a lead in the fight. But with what? What do you think?"

We should do that, then. In addition, we should slice his heels, prevent him from walking. Maybe shove a senbon attached to a wire in it, see if one of the jounins can use Lightning release on it.

Everyone nods, and looks down at the scene below them. The tension is clear in the air, and the trees sway gentle as your sensei starts to glow with chakra. He tenses his body up, and yells. "The First Gate, Gate of Opening, Open!"

A blast of Chakra blows wind in everyone's faces, and you feel much safer. After what your sensei did to the last man who caused him to use this technique, you can't imagine anyone else fairing much better. Mirai remains still, her short sword drawn towards Makoto. The criminal chuckles at Hanto, shaking his head. "Oh, of course. The Hidden Gates. So bold to start a fight with the First Gate. If you don't defeat me quickly, your body will be warned down and damaged. Are you that confident?"

Hanto smirks. "Always. I rely on it."

Makoto flicks his wrists, and the longswords he's wielding break into segments. They seem to be strung together by wire, and he starts to spin the flailing blades over his head. "Hahah! A fellow masochist, then? I'll be glad to deliver, you fool!"

Makoto swings his bladed whip, and it flies towards your sensei with the intent to pierce his heart. Hanto steps to the side and rushes at the criminal, vanishing in a blitz of speed. Suddenly the blade impales itself into the ground next to Mirai, and retracts at a blinding speed. The sword, anchored into the earth, yanks Makoto from his position and just over the blow that your sensei was about to deliver, landing next to Mirai and flinging the bladed whip at her.

Ai has an eye for detail, have her and Kichiro set up traps, double layered so he spots the fakes and ends up tripping the real ones. even triple layered if we have the supplies. have Shinji, try to keep bugs on him at all times to slow him down, get some in him if possible and just keep causing damage. Yosuke and Kayo should be fast enough to stay ahead of him so keep leading him into traps, but do not let him get too close. Himawari keeps using her Byakugan to keep track of him and we stay with her. she can tell us where she is and we pass the info along to whoever needs it with False Sound so only they hear it, also let people know where traps are set to avoid tripping them outselves

She holds up her sword, and the blade wraps around it. She yanks him towards herself and kicks him in the stomach, causing him to gasp in pain. Hanto steps forward. "Mirai, watch out! Don't let him cut you!"

She looks at Hanto in annoyance. "I know! You don't have to tell me!" The young Jounin starts to form seals with just a single hand, an incredible feat of Ninjutsu prowess. She grips her sword with both hands once the seal is complete. "Fire Style: Heated Steel Jutsu!" A Red glow envelopes her sword, and it spreads to the bladed whip, and down into the handle of Makoto's weapon. His hand around the grip starts to burn, the smell of crispy flesh rising up into the trees. He cackles, looking directly into Mirai's eyes. "You will be the second sacrifice to Jashin from this family of yours. Hidan may have lost his way in consorting with the Akatsuki, but no doubt he fulfilled his ultimate purpose of spreading destruction for Lord Jashin! Now die!"

He yanks his other sword from the ground and stabs at the Kunoichi, and she seems to reach into her pocket with her free hand. When she draws it back out, a strange sort of bladed knuckle duster is wrapped around her fingers. She punches the sword away, and growls at Makoto. "Bastard! Do you really think you can get away with something as disrespectful as that?"

She releases her sword and lets loose a jab, and Makoto dodges to the left. "Ha! As if that woul- GAH!?!" A gash is sliced into his eyeball, through his bone, and out the back of his head, as blood pours forth. Somehow, although you're not sure, she cut him even though she missed! Kayo smiles. "Her Flying Swallow jutsu. This means she's serious."

I was gonna be sick, but then I realized I might vomit out a ninja.

You pull out a small purple vial from your pocket, and look at your reflection within it. This is how you managed to capture this guy in the first place, although it's try he might have wanted to be captured. You're positive that if you could wear him down with this, it would make the fight easier on your sensei. That combined with Shinji's chakra eating bugs should only make it a matter of time, and he's weak now. You turn to your allies.

"Ai, you're fast, and sneaky. I need your help to deliver this poison to Makoto. Shinji, can you use your bugs from here and try and sneak them into his wounds?"

Shinji nods. "Of course. He won't have any idea that they've burrowed inside of him, if he's as immune to pain as he seems to be."

Kichiro leans forward. "Wait, what about the rest of us? We're not just going to sit here!"

You look around. "The rest of you are going to be the cover for the cover. If me or Ai end up in a bad spot, we need to know that you have our backs. There's no risks that we can take here. Everyone ready?"

The group nods. Down below you, Makoto screams out. "Ahh! Bitch! My eye! You'll pay for this!"

He leaps back and locks his swords back into a straight position, and slams the hilts together. They combine into a sort of double bladed staff, which he starts to spin around his body with expert precision. The psycho lurches forward at high speed, and Hanto strikes him from the side, diverting his path away from Mirai. The Jashinists looks between his foes, and seems desperate. "I see. It's obvious that simple Taijutsu won't be enough to stop you, so I'll just have to use that technique..Lord Jashin, your sacrifices will be plenty today. I promise this."

He spins the double bladed staff over his head, until the bladed segments all fly into the air. They seem to levitate freely, and next to you, Himawari yells out. "Sensei! Look out, those blades are connected to his staff by chakra strings! He can control them remotely!"

Makoto laughs. "That's right! There's no way you can dodge an attack from every angle!"

He spins the weapon over his head, and a storm of blades flies through the air towards Mirai and Hanto. "Death Zone Technique!"

Mirai strings together several handseals, and inhales deeply. "Great Breakthrough Jutsu!"

When she exhales the name of the technique, a great blast of wind knocks all the blades away, although they soon reassert themselves and fly towards the young Jounin. Hanto and her start to leap about, slashing away the projectiles. Mirai has difficulty keeping up with the speed of the technique, and it takes Hanto covering her to prevent any wounds. You wonder why they're so concerned with escaping this fight without a single scratch.

You look to Ai. "Let's go."

She nods, and pulls wire and shuriken from her pouch. You take out senbon and wire as well, and start to coat all the weapons in poison. (Two uses, seven uses left)

The both of you leap down into the shadows while the fight continues, and you yourself land not far from the enemy, behind him. Poison Senbon ready, you start to fling them from the bushes, aimed at his midsection. The darts stick into his back, and he turns towards you and grumbles in frustration. "Ridiculous! I don't have time for such an annoyance! Get out of here!"

Makoto has no idea what you're planning for sure.

As you're watching the clone being formed, you're reminded of a lesson about the elements from class. Each elemental nature is strong against one element, and weak against another. In this particular case, earth is weak to lightning. Although you're not for sure, you do have one hope of someone having the lightning element.

You look up as the creature bears down on you. "Yosuke! Do you know any Lightning Jutsu?"

Although you can't see it from where you are, the red-haired boy grins from ear to ear. He chuckles. "Do I? Well..Maybe a few." The Genin leaps down from the trees next to you, as everyone looks on in anticipation. The clone laughs. "Two kids or one, it doesn't make a difference!"

Yosuke puts his hand out in front of you. "Let me handle this. There'll be less risk that way." You nod, and he starts to spin his spear over his head. It gathers energy, sparks of lightning travelling up and down the pole and focusing into the tip of the blade. From what you can tell, he's channeling his lightning natured chakra into his weapon, to increase it's cutting power drastically. It must be an incredibly draining technique for a Genin to use. The clone rushes forward, but Yosuke suddenly explodes with an outburst. "Hey! Wait a second!" The clone stops in it's tracks, and looks at the young boy in confusion. "I don't normally fight without my partner, so you'll have to excuse me! Your defeat may not be as graceful as it could have been. I apologize."

The clone flies forward and slams it's fist into the ground, causing an explosion of dust. Apparently it had grown tired of waiting.

Looking up, you see that Ai has returned. She's finished traps. Now all you need to do is lead Makoto between the two trees to the left of the path. How are you going to draw his main attention to you?

You motion for everyone to drop down, and the seven Genin all look at the ensuing battle. Hanto is leaping about to protect Mirai from the attack, but they seem totally trapped. Even then, you think that you can see sweat on Makoto, telling you that your poison is slowly starting to take effect. Shinji turns to you. "My insects are draining his chakra as we speak. Even then, I wouldn't risk it meaning that he'll wear down faster than your sensei. The Hidden Gates are not meant to be sustained."

You nod. "You're right. Okay everyone, we're finishing this!"

Makoto turns and glances at your group. "Tch, what are those kids thinking? Do they really expect to pull a fast one on me.."

He throws his weapon up in the air, and quickly forms handsigns. "Earth Release, Rock Gun technique!" He rapid fire spits a storm of small pebbles at your group, before turning and catching his weapon to continue the assault on your teachers. The pebbles quickly expand into massive boulders, and everyone in your group is in danger of being demolished.

Yosuke thrusts his spear forward, and a bolt of lightning flies out to pierce one of the rocks and demolish it. Kichiro destroys another with a fireball, and Himawari leaps up to block three of the boulders one by one, with a Rotation. They're grinded into dust, and she's panting as she finishes the jutsu. The Jashinist looks back again, and grumbles. "Well, apparently these bugs are cockroaches!"

You speed off towards the trees, and start to mock him. "Can't even kill some Genin, can you!? Not even your Lord Jashinki or whatever can help you, hahaha!"

The man stops, and looks at you. "WHAT!? YOU DARE TO DISRESPECT LORD JASHIN!?"

He completely stops the assault on your teachers, and brings the storm of blades around to you. All of the Genin begin to charge him from his rear, and Hanto yells out. "Takeshi! What the hell are you doing!? Look out!"

From every angle, the razor sharp sections of blade start to come at you. You leap backwards in an effort to escape, and go directly over the traps. The blades hone in on your midair, completely under Makoto's control. They slice up your midsection, and the blunt sides of them impact you to knock you down to the ground. The Jashinist points all the blades at you now that you're immobilized, and yells in fury. "Now DIE!"

The blades all rush towards you. It seems he hasn't taken the bait, preferring to attack you at range. You'd thought that your team mates would at least be able to intervene before he could attack you, but the speed of his weapon is extraordinary. No wonder only your sensei could keep up with it, when Mirai, another Jounin, couldn't.

It looks as if this will be the end.

The sound of the metal being blasted away is accompanied by a twirling wind, and when you open your eyes you see Himawari in front of you. She's in the middle of her Rotation technique, and every last razor is blasted away from harming you. She lands on her feet panting harshly from the effort of having to block so many powerful attacks in a row.

In the distance, Hanto engages the man in close combat. They clash explosively, and you realize that they're both moving at nearly an equal speed. Who is this man that he's able to keep up with your sensei in this enhanced state? You wonder if the Jashinist has learned the Hidden Gates as well, knowing that any damage to his body would only be temporary.

Even Mirai can only watch as the two engage in battle. Makoto is using the handles of his swords as a shillelagh, expertly defending against Hanto's attacks. The razor blades that Himawari blocked are all resting on the ground, and from her blindspot behind her, a lone razor flies through the air.

Makoto twitches his finger ever so subtly, and the blade slashes through Himawari's shoulder and lands in his free hand. He drags the bloody blade across his tongue, despite your confusion, and suddenly stops.

He slashes himself across the stomach with the razor, and blood pours from his gullet to his feet.

You stand up, and grab Himawari and leap to the trees. You're safe for the moment.

Hanto backs off from his foe, and rests on a single knee. He grumbles. "This has taken too long.. What a bother..Mirai. I'm afraid we may be at our wit's end here. My body is worn.."

She looks at him knowingly. "But isn't that what you were waiting for?"

Hanto nods, smiling. "That's right. Now I just wait for the moment to strike, and we'll win. Work with the kids, and I'll hit him if I see the chance. It's up to you now. I'll keep everyone safe."

She draws her sword once more. "Right."

Mirai suddenly appears next to you, and quickly conveys some vital information. "Himawari, Takeshi..You shouldn't have engaged him like that. You guys don't know enough about this foe to know how dangerous he is. I wish you would have all left, but, there's no time for that now."

Himawari looks at her sensei with concern. "What do you mean..?"

Down below, Makoto is creating some sort of ritual circle from his own blood. Hanto cries out, and attacks. His speed is not what it had been a moment ago, but he's able to fight Makoto from what you can see. You turn to Mirai. "Yeah, what's wrong? It looks as though we can get this guy on the ropes! Why aren't you helping Hanto!?"

Mirai huffs. "Listen to me, damnit! Look at the cultist!"

Slowly but surely, Makoto's skin turns black. The visage of a skeleton appears all over his body. "What's he doing..?" inquires Himawari.

Mirai frowns. "This is the technique that killed my father. And I'm afraid you've fallen victim to it, Himawari."

The little girl looks up. "What!?"

Mirai holds out her hand. "Stay calm! It's not over yet. The wound he inflicted on you was just an attempt to get some of your blood. This is a special Jashinist technique. If he can complete that ritual circle, any damage done to him while he's within it..Will also be done to you. We have to keep him out of this circle."

Down below, you begin to understand the dire nature of the situation. To the others it must look as if Hanto is winning, but with this new information, you can tell your sensei is simply being toyed with, his fatigue making him unable to act. Every now and then, Makoto passes over his ritual circle, throwing a handful of blood at the ring and completing it step by step. Soon it will be ready.

You look at Mirai, and back at Himawari. The promise you made to Naruto rings in your head. "Well, what are we going to do? All we have to do is keep the circle from being fulfilled, right?" Mirai nods. "Tell the others. I have to fight."

She leaps away, and you join the others and explain the situation to them. Himawari looks to be on the verge of tears, and you get the sense she's used to much chakra to be truly helpful. Everyone else looks on grimly, completely unsure of what to do about the situation. There's no way that any of you could touch this Jashinist if Mirai can't keep up with him. In the distance, she fruitlessly tries to attack him with a mixture of fire and wind jutsu. She even attempts to burn away the blood, but Makoto blocks her attacks with walls of mud.

Hanto is slowing further and further. In a moment, the jutsu will be complete.

You look up, a thought occurring to you. The answer seems so obvious, and you can't help but chuckle. All of the Genin look at you with surprise, even Ai. Kayo growls. "What are you laughing for!? This is a serious situation!"

You hold out a hand and wave her off dismissively. "Don't worry, I've got a plan. You guys will know when to attack. Everyone, I want you to prepare your most powerful jutsu. We're going to have one opportunity to hit this guy. You'll know when it is, alright?"

They all look at you with suspicion, and doubt. Himawari steps forward, hands clasped together. "Well, can you at least tell me what you're planning? It's my life at stake here, you know."

You nod. "I'm going to use a simple Genjutsu to make him think the ritual circle is in a different place than it actually is. Just a few inches."

Yosuke slaps his forehead, and laughs. "That /is/ good!"

You turn around, and form the handseals for your jutsu. You wait to use it until the exact moment that Makoto finishes the ritual circle, and adjust it several inches to the left. Just enough to ensure that Makoto doesn't place both of his feet in the circle.

He lands just shy of entering it, his foot actually smearing the real circle of blood to open it up. You grin, and your sensei squares off with the man.

Hanto chuckles. "So that's how it is, huh..?"

The Jashinist laughs maniacally, gripping the razor. "She'll be the first of many sacrifices to Lord Jashin! Bye bye, little girl!"

He slices open his own throat, blood pouring out comically. Just next to you, Himawari gasps, and grasps her throat. She's completely fine.

Your sensei looks in your direction, and sees you smiling. "I understand, then. Good job, Takeshi."

Hanto drops his hands to his sides, and begins to focus. He speaks, drawing the attention of Makoto once more. "Do you know why my name on the battlefield is the Blue Gambit?"

The Cultist curses at him through garbled blood.

The fire pulses, and starts to expand. It roars like a beast, and it's soft light fills the forest as the sun is nearly set in the distance. Mirai has stepped away, and she's looking on with amazement. Hanto continues. "It's quite risky to keep attacking, even though I have more strength then ever. It's a pity I'm too weak to move, right?"

Hanto puts his arms at his side, and drops to a horse stance. The fire around him starts to swirl in a magnificent spiral. "The Second Gate, Gate of Healing, Open!"

The fire around him shoots high into the sky, before falling back down and drawing itself into a single point on Hanto's fist. It's shining like a star, and the Jashinist is paralyzed with fear and confusion. Hanto's eyes are glowing with a mystical energy, and the incompetent drunk has been replaced with a shining knight. He holds out his hand, and proclaims the name of his attack. "Soul Arrow!"

He reels back to pitch the attack, and launches a white pinpoint of light. Makoto begins to leap away, deftly dodging the attack. It keeps coming back to home in on him, breaking through earth and wood alike to seek it's target. Hanto smiles. "The poison and insects have worn you down too much. You're not dodging this one."

The blast impacts the Cultist's chest, and his body explodes. Five seperate pieces rain down from the sky, his torso having been turned into an empty hole. Makoto's head rolls near your feet, and it's eyes look up at you, wide and terrified.

Like I have said before, they are going to be big. Not only that, but these characters will play different roles as the quest progresses.

Unless I'm wrong, there's 6 teams from the Leaf, and 6 foreign teams participating, not including all the NPC mooks. About 38 Genin, all with their own abilities and personality and backstory.

Seven days in the forest of death, plus the preliminaries, plus the final tournament, which will actually progress all the way through unlike in canon. It's going to be a big, big, big combat event.
