The hall is relatively empty right now, most likely cleared to make space for the circle, although there are a handful of crusaders here, most likely the tower's mages judging by their robes. Knight-Captain Laurentius stands on top of the stairs, and breaths a sigh of relief when he sees you've all arrived.

“So remind me why we didn't use one of these to get to the other towers in the first place?” You ask, thinking of all the time you could have saved going from kingdom to kingdom.

“Teleportation circles only work when those using them have visited the target location before. Which is why we could not bring the rest of the escort with us.” Daniel explains.

“Well they do work either way, but if you're not familiar with where you're going there's a good chance you'll lose something in the teleportation, like your bag. Or a leg.” Berry says, translating for Joan.

“Believe me, if we were capable of safely teleporting you to the other watchtowers when you left, we would have done it.” Captain Laurentius says, making his way down the stairs towards you. “Just to be sure though, check to make sure you haven't lost any of your belongings. Even in the safest conditions, long-range teleportation can be tricky.”

You do a cursory check of your bag to make sure everything's there. Everything seems to be in order, so you close your bag and throw it back over your shoulders.

“So what's going on?” You ask.

“A few things, actually. The situation here has become complicated since you've left, especially in recent weeks.”

"No, nothing that serious yet. Although I fear it might not be too long until there is. The number of Scavenger incursions have been increasing lately. Not only that, but it seems some of the stronger demons are starting to cross the border as well. I fear they're getting restless, there may be a serious attack soon if we don't take action, but the king is being...difficult."

"Difficult?"

"Ever since you left, I've been contacting him concerning the crusade. Iseria has less traditions concerning the crusades, so I thought I could convince him to support our crusade while you dealt with Galloway and Belmore. However, my efforts to convince him have met with resistance. It seems he's hesitant to pledge Iseria's support for the crusade."

"Hesitant? Why the Void is he hesitant?" Erika asks.

"It seems some of the noblemen on the king's council would prefer not to get involved." Laurentius explains. "Worse yet, it seems they have the king's ear, because recently he's stopped replying to my letters altogether."

"Then what should we do?" You ask.

"Our only option is to go there and try to convince his highness in person. I've managed to convince him to at least allow us to make our case at the next council meeting, which is why I requested that you return immediately. If the king and his council will not listen to me, then perhaps they will listen to Galadriel and her Champion."

"When's the meeting supposed to be?" You ask.

"The meeting starts eight days from now, we'll be leaving for the capital tomorrow morning. As I understand, you've all just returned from the Swamp not long ago, so you'll have the rest of today to rest and prepare for the trip. I apologize for doing this right after you've returned from the Forsaken Lands, but as I've said we're quickly running out of time."

With that, Laurentius starts heading back up the stairs towards his office. The tower's mages begin to clear the circle, while the rest of the group splits up, most heading back to their rooms to rest. You wonder if you should do the same, but part of you feels it would be a waste to spend the whole day resting.

Sparks has explained this in past threads before. The way it works is that enchanting armor places 'aetheric strain' on the armor, and the more you enchant it, the weaker each individual enchantment upon one piece gets. With how fine-tuned we've gotten our Ward/Speed enchantments, Sparks has confirmed that neither would be weaker if we had both on the same piece of gear.

Laurentius mentioned that there's been more demonic activity near the border, which makes you wonder if Anna's village is okay. Figuring it wouldn't hurt to look, you head out for the stables and saddle up one of the horses, making your way towards the village of Lynn.

The trip takes a while, but thankfully you don't encounter anything along the way. As you approach the village gates, however, you notice that things have changed. The last time you were here, the village was surrounded by only a small wooden fence, more to keep livestock in and wild animals out than to keep serious dangers out. However, where there used to be a gate their is now a fairly sturdy wooden palisade, complete with a handful of guards wearing leather armor and carrying spears.

It doesn't take long to see why the palisade was built, as once you get closer you notice a large hole in the wall, where something large must have burnt through. Some of the villagers are busy repairing the damage right now.

The difference between a holy weapon and Galadriel is that while damage from a holy weapon does slow a demon's natural regeneration, but it doesn't bypass it completely like Galadriel does. An imp slashed by a holy weapon may have a nasty scar for a few hours, but eventually it would heal over and be good as new. An imp slashed by Galadriel will never recover, that scar will be there permanently.

"Well that's good to hear then. So, what's this about an outsider in the chapel? One of the guards mentioned him too, what's the story there?"

"He just wandered into town one day. Well, more like he got to the gates and then he collapsed. He looked half-dead when we found him, Father Hermann's been treating him since then. A lot of the others are suspicious of him though."

"Suspicious? Why?"

"The axe he was carrying with him, it was...well, it didn't look right. Father Hermann's kept it locked away just to be safe, but he has no idea what it is. It looks demonic though, so a lot of people want him to leave as soon as he can move again."

'Demonic? That is curious.' Galadriel comments through your mental link.

'That doesn't sound good. Might want to check that out before you leave.' Leviathan suggests.

The chapel is a simple wooden building, standing out only due to it's size and stained glass windows. The priest inside looks over to you and Anna when you enter.

"Why hello Anna. What brings you here today?"

"My friend just wanted to check on the outsider. Speaking of which, did those herbs I brought you work well?"

"Ah, yes, they worked just fine. He's awake now, but I doubt he'll be able to move without help any time soon. If I may ask though, who is your friend here? From his tunic, I'm assuming he's from the Watchtower?"

"This is Siegfried, the one I told you about."

"Ah! I see. A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Siegfried. If you wish to speak with the outsider, he should be awake right now. I assume you've already been told about his axe though?"

"A little, yes." You respond.

"I see. Well, I've locked it away for now just to be safe, but if you wish to take a look at it, I don't mind. I'm sure the Watchtower will be able to deal with it better than I can."

"Of course. Here, right this way."

The priest leads you into one of the side rooms. Inside, you find a young man, probably just under 20, lying on a cot. He is covered in bandages, and one of his eyes is covered by an eyepatch. He turns his head to look at you when you enter the room, but doesn't sit up. Given his sorry state, you're not sure he can without help.

"He woke up late last night. I've left him alone so he can rest for the most part, but he should be well enough to speak now."

"Who are you?" The outsider asks.

"You're in Lynn, Anna tells me you collapsed outside the village a few days ago. How did you end up in this state?"

"I was...I was being chased by his spell."

"Spell? What spell?"

"That hound, that fire hound he made to chase after me. It got me, but I managed to get away. Then it just stopped chasing me. I kept going, saw a village up ahead, and then...I don't remember."

"You passed out." Father Hermann informs him. "You're lucky you made it here, I doubt you'd have survived if you collapsed out in the wilderness."

"You said you were chased by some sort of fire hound? Who sent it after you?" You ask.

Wilhelm's eyes narrow. "He did. That bastard, Alastor."

"Pardon?" Father Hermann interjects. "Could you say that again, I think I misheard you."

"Alastor. We finally broke free, started marching towards his fortress, but then..." He trails off. You think you can guess what happened next.

"Maybe you should just give us the full story. Start from the beginning."

"My brother, he was going to help us break out of the farm. But then he died, and we killed the demon that was keeping us prisoner. We decided we were going to make Alastor pay for what happened to everyone, so we started marching towards his fortress."

"You marched on Alastor's fortress?" You ask, incredulous that anyone would even consider that outside of a crusade.

"It was everyone's decision. We all grabbed whatever weapons we could find and started marching. But then Alastor found us, and...he killed them. All of them. Then he gouged out my eye and sent me running for the border."

'How horrible.' Galadriel sympathizes.

'How stupid, you mean. Honestly, marching on the Lord of Wrath's fortress without an army? They brought it on themselves, honestly. I can't see how any of them would expect a different outcome.' Leviathan disagrees.

"Marbas." Wilhelm answers. "The demon that was keeping us all imprisoned. I managed to grab it after my brother disarmed him and used it to chop his head off. Our weapons weren't doing anything to him, but his axe finished him off for good."

'...That does not sound good.' Galadriel says, suddenly sounding very worried.

"My axe, I need it! I need it to-" Wilhelm says, making an effort to sit up once again. He strains for a bit, but to no avail, and falls back onto his back."

"Don't push yourself, just stay down for now." You tell him. "Anna, could you stay with Wilhelm while Father Hermann and I step out for a bit?"

"Sure." She replies, and you and the priest exit the room.

"Where's the axe?" You ask him, once the doors are closed behind you.

"I've locked it inside a chest for now. Come follow me."

Father Hermann leads you into another room, where a large chest lies in the center of the room. He produces a key, and unlocks it for you, lifting the lid to reveal the axe inside.

The axe is demonic, that you can tell immediately. It looks absolutely vicious, and glows with a dull red light. On closer inspection, you see that it is engraved with scenes of bloodshed, and on the flat of it's axehead is a prominent engraving of a winged demon. It's easy to see why it would intimidate most of the villagers.

'Father Aureus, it's just as I expected.' Galadriel says with concern.

'Thought I recognized the name. No wonder Alastor let that mortal go.' Leviathan says.

'What are you talking about?'

'The axe, it's Soulforged, just as I feared.' Galadriel explains.

'Soulforged?'

'You never explained this stuff to him?' Leviathan asks.

'I did not see a reason to, though I suppose now an explanation is in order. You see, Siegfried, Soulforged weapons are weapons forged from a shard of a being's soul.'

'Which means, this axe is essentially a small part of Marbas, the demon that mortal took it from.'

'It's bad because it means that Marbas's soul will rub off on whoever's dumb enough to use it.' Leviathan explains. 'It's not conscious, at least not on it's own, but it's still part of Marbas's soul. Hold on to it long enough, and it'll start overwriting your own, until you've essentially become a second Marbas.'

You draw your hand away from the axe quickly. 'Okay, glad I didn't touch it then. Should I be concerned about Wilhelm though?'

'Right now? No. It's not an instant effect, it happens gradually over time. Whatever's rubbed off on Wilhelm isn't enough to worry about. If he keeps using it though, eventually he's going to wake up in the morning and find he's grown a set of horns and has a sudden urge to go on a rampage.'

'Soulforged weapons are powerful, but they aren't meant to be used by anyone other than the one who created it. They are forged from a shard of the creator's soul, and so they can potentially contaminate another's soul, possibly even overwriting the wielder's soul if theirs is not strong enough to resist it.'

'That sounds really bad. How is the axe different from either of you though?'

'It's different from me because this belt isn't Soulforged. It's made from my scales and houses my soul, it's essentially just a second body for me.' Leviathan explains. 'The angel isn't any different though, that sword you've been using this whole time actually IS Soulforged.'

'Do not give partial explanations to frighten him.' Galadriel chastises. 'Yes, my blade is Soulforged, but you have no reason to fear. The bond between us links us in soul as well as mind, and so you have nothing to fear. It is difficult to explain, but essentially as far as my blade is concerned you are me, and so you are able to use it and I am able to share my powers with you without risk of my soul overriding yours.'

'Yes, although it does not house Marbas as my blade houses me, so it does not contain the same strength as mine. It can override an immortal's regeneration, and it will burn those of my kind, but it is not capable of sharing it's master's powers with others unless it overwhelms their soul.'

'That's another reason you shouldn't touch it, by the way.' Leviathan chimes in. 'You and featherbrain here are essentially linked at the hip, so as far as the axe is concerned you may as well be an angel, which means it'll burn you just as bad as her sword burns my kind. You're not actually an angel, so it'll heal eventually, but it'll still hurt a whole lot.'

The priest looks at you quizzically as you suddenly take a big step back away from the chest. 'Okay, so don't ever touch it, right. What do you guys think we should do with it then, destroy it?'

'Impossible. It would take an immense level of power to actually destroy a Soulforged weapon. The only one I can think of who could actually pull it off is Malaphas, so take that how you will.' Leviathan says.

'I do not think leaving it in Wilhelm's hands is a wise course of action though. Perhaps we should bring it back to the tower, and have them send it to the Red Watchtower to be safely put away in the archives.' Galadriel suggests.

'I don't think the mortal would really appreciate you taking it away though, from how he was asking for it earlier.' Leviathan points out. 'Feel free to take it from him anyways if you like, but I'm just saying he might not just give it up without a fight.'

The priest locks the axe away once again, and both of you make your way back to the room you left Anna and Wilhelm in.

"Anna, would you mind going with Father Hermann for a bit? I need to talk with Wilhelm."

Anna nods, and follows Father Hermann out the door, leaving you and Wilhelm alone.

"Wilhelm, I need to talk with you about that axe." You state, taking a seat next to his cot.

"What about it?"

"Wilhelm, that axe is dangerous. You really shouldn't be using it."

Wilhelm frowns. "I have to though. Normal weapons wouldn't work on Marbas, they won't work on Alastor either."

"Look, do you know what that axe you've been using is?"

Wilhelm doesn't respond. It's clear that he doesn't know exactly what he's been using this whole time.

"Wilhelm, that axe is Soulforged. What that means is, part of Marbas's soul is inside that axe, and by using it, his soul will start to rub off on you."

"...What are you saying?"

"I'm saying if you keep using it, you'll eventually end up turning into Marbas. I can't let that happen, so I'm take the axe away and locking it up someplace safe."

"You can't do that!" He shouts, grasping at his ribs.

Wilhelm goes silent. It seems you've finally managed to hit home. He grits his teeth, and you think you can see him holding back tears when he speaks again.

There's a long pause as Wilhelm thinks about it. Finally, he sighs.

"What did you say your name was?"

"Siegfried, Siegfried Schmidt. Why?"

"Alastor mentioned someone named Siegfried. You've fought him before?"

"No, I haven't. But I've seen him before, and eventually I will have to fight him."

"...Alright, then I'll do what you say. But I want you to make me a promise."

"What's that?"

"If I don't have Marbas's axe, I can't kill Alastor. So when you finally do end up fighting him, kill him for me and everyone else that died because of him."

"...I promise, I will. For now, you just focus on getting better. Don't move around so much anymore, you won't be able to join the fight if you keep reopening your wounds."

With that, you get up and exit the room, leaving Wilhelm behind. As you start to head out, however, Wilhelm calls after you.

"Siegfried?"

"Yeah?"

"There's something I forgot to tell you. When Alastor sent me running, he told me to find someone at the White Watchtower named Siegfried and deliver a message."

"What was the message?"

"He said 'Hurry up'."

It dawns on you right then that you never actually told Anna you were the Champion. You'd totally forgotten about that until now.

"Oh. Uh, well, since the Crusade's coming up, Captain Laurentius sent us up there to help secure their support."

"When did you get back?"

"Today, actually. We teleported back once we finished our business up there."

"Really? That explains why none of us have gotten word about that yet. I'm guessing Belmore is going to support the crusade then."

"Yep, they pledged their support. Galloway did too."

"Hm. But you know, I thought it was the Champion who was going to get their support. Did you go with him then?"

"...You could say that, yeah."

The rest of dinner passes peacefully enough. You thank Mrs.Haffner for the meal, and Anna follows you out to your horse.

"When you get back, tell Berry I said hi and tell Joan I said thank you for watching over him."

"Will do."

"Oh yeah, and Siegfried?"

"Yeah?"

Anna punches you in your right arm, not particularly hard but hard enough to catch you by surprise.

"Watchtower relic my ass. You realize almost everyone knows the Champions name by now, right?"

"...Ahhh, sorry about that. I didn't mean to lie, but things were still complicated back when we were at the farm."

"It's fine, just don't do it again. And visit more often, I was starting to think you forgot we were here."

"I will, sorry."

With that, you climb onto your horse and start riding back for the tower, leaving the village of Lynn behind.

It's starting to get late when you finally make it back to the tower. You head straight back to your room, and are about to go to bed when you hear someone knock on your door.

"Who is it?"

"It's Erika. Can I talk to you for a minute?"

You get back up and head over to the door, revealing Erika standing outside. She seems oddly sheepish, hanging her head and rubbing the back of her head nervously.

"Is something wrong Erika?"

"Uh...yeah, actually." She admits. "Listen, I know I'm part of the honor guard, but is it alright if I stay behind while you guys head to the capital?"

"Stay behind? Why?" You ask, confused.

"It's, uh, well there's some people there I'd really rather not run into if I can avoid it, and if we're going to a council meeting there's no way I can avoid them. So, this is kind of selfish of me, but can I please just stay behind? Laurentius won't make a fuss about it if you give me the okay."

You open your eyes, and find yourself standing in an empty space, nothing but darkness in either direction. For a moment, you think you're just dreaming, before you hear that familiar voice for the first time in a while.

"You've come a long way, haven't you Siegfried? But there's still more to come, much more to come."

You look around, to no avail. "You again? Where are you? Where's Zaphiel?"

"I am here, Siegfried." You hear, and Galadriel's old commander suddenly materializes before you.

"I'm guessing the other one's still not showing his face?"

"No, I'm afraid not. Maybe one day it'll be safe to show my face, but it's not today, so just deal with it and listen." The voice says.

"Why, what is it you're going to warn me about this time?"

"There's something amiss in the capital. Lilith's involved, as she often is. All I'm here to say is, be careful who you trust at the council meeting."

"What do you mean, is there a demon hiding there? There's nothing to worry about then, Ganelon can sense them if they're there."

"It's not so simple, Siegfried." Zaphiel says. "Sometimes, the enemy is out of sight, pulling the strings from afar."

"What do you mean? If you know who the spy is, why can't you just tell me?"

"Because directly telling you would put you in more danger than if we had told you nothing at all. I've said this before, I'll say it again. We'll explain when we can, but for now you're just going to have to trust us."

The vision ends, and you open your eyes to find it's already morning. You think you've woken up earlier than usual, but figure that just gives you more time to get up and get ready.

'Is something wrong?' Leviathan asks, surprisingly.

'Yeah, everything's fine. Why?'

'Nothing. I just thought I felt something strange last night. Probably just the mage girl's experiments, it usually is her when I sense something strange late at night.'

Could she somehow sense what happened while you were asleep? You're not sure, but you were told last time you spoke to Zaphiel and...whoever the other one is not to tell anyone about your visions, so you say nothing. Today's the day you head for the capital, you've lived in Iseria you're whole life yet you've never actually seen it before. You'd be a little excited, if it weren't for what Zaphiel and the voice said to you last night. Still, at least now you know something is amiss, you'll just have to keep your eyes open when you get there.

Alright, gonna call it a night here. Next thread should be next week, either Friday or Saturday depending on how busy I am those days. Keep an eye on the twitter in case something changes though.
