You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

Currently, you were part of Artois' hunting party, chasing after a traitorous lord that had tried to assassinate you and Tarin. You had wondered what he would have to gain during the night you were waiting for Clementine to be repaired, with Tarin pointing out that having killed two of Reikland's biggest thorns in their side would have put him in a very good bargaining position when he defected. You guess it made some sort of sense.

However, that sort of subterfuge, not to mention the idea of even defecting at all, had seemed to put the entire Breton camp in an uproar. There were so many volunteers to join Artois' hunting party that he could have practically just led the entire army out.

However, Artois was playing it wise, and only took knights and squires that he could trust, mostly from his own house and his closest allies, which included your platoon.

"I hope that your steed is well?" Artois asks as Tarin deflty weaves through the trees to stay on his tail.

"Yeah, she's running almost as good as new." You grin. "They still rushed a few things though, so she's not at 100%."

"Let us hope that it will not prove to be a problem for us." Artois chuckles. "I know that your steeds are more suited for traversing this terrain. Would you not mind riding ahead of us?"

"Well, how many VTs does this Kalendor guy have?" Bannon asks.

"In addition to his own steed, Kalendor has six knights and a dozen squires." Artois explains. "Not exactly an army, but not a small force, either."

We can't catch him with such a large party, but if we go in front of them, we have an actual chance. Further, his numbers don't matter for much, so long as we can slow him down.

Besides, we're hunters. While a royal hunt might consist of many men and hounds, a hunt out in the mountains is a solitary prowl.

"Yeah, we can catch up to him faster." You agree. "What about it, sir?"

"Well, I prefer safety in numbers." Bannon grumbles, his VT trudging alongside Artois'. "But I suppose there's some merit to it. All right everyone, let's pick up the pace!"

"You heard him, Tarin." You instruct. "Let's put in some more speed."

"Roger." Tarin nods and Clementine picks up her pace.

"How fast are we gonna do this?" Rock asks as Lagoon naturally begins to outpace the rest of the platoon, taking up the lead position.

"I want to say as fast as we can, but then we'd be barreling through this forest like elephants. They'd hear us coming miles away." Bannon mumbles.

It depends heavily on a large number of factors. Long story short, it's possible to move pretty quietly with WW2 tanks, but only on low RPM.

Modern times, the M1 Abrams has been called the "Silent Death" because it's so quiet, thanks to the turbine engine.
>>
>>43764839
Tracks only play a small part of it. Although really, the T-34's steel tracks would raise an absolute racket. The big problem is the engine noise and dust cloud. Engine noise can be reduced on lower RPM and by cutting the number of engines used in some vehicles.

"Let's do this quiet." You say. "Throttle back enough so we aren't just stomping blindly through the forest. Hopefully the sound of their own movements will mask ours."

"Good idea." Parker says cheerfully.

You slowly pick your way through the trees, moving as cautiously as possible. Well, more like Tarin moves as cautiously as possible. She avoids stepping on hard surfaces like tree roots and rocks, opting instead for softer dirt or leaves to further mask the sounds of your movements.

And then you hear it, the distant hum of VT engines up ahead. You were slowly catching up to them.

"Anybody see anything?" You ask.

"I have visual on Breton VTs." Alex remarks. "Six light VTs. Probably just squires acting as rearguard. What should we do?"

"If we engage we might give away that we're right behind them." Bannon mumbles. "Maybe we bypass them until we can get in front of the main group and cut them off."

"B-But they'll delay Artois' group." Alfie points out.

As you trudge through the forest, leaving behidn the small rearguard of squires, you're caught off guard when you see two golden VTs burst through the trees, each flying banners bearing Kalendor's sigil, the dove with an arrow through its heart. The two VTs pause, as if similarly caught off guard.

"Fuck, we've been made!" You bark as the pair of VTs charge at you and the Lagoon, lances at the ready.

"Move move MOVE!" You hear Alex shout.

"Working on it! "Rock grunts.

"Damnit! You're in the line of fire!" Axel grunts. "We don't have a clear shot!"

Well, in this case, you had two options. Either fire your cannon or Dragonsbreath at the attacking knight and hope you could stop it in its tracks before he could reach you, or dodge out of the way and hope Bannon and Axel could follow up.

You fire you cannon, scoring a solid hit on the front plate of the charging VT. The entire body of the vehicle is briefly shrouded in smoke and fire, showing a clear penetration into the hull. However, the momentum of the VT continues to carry it forward, making an impact inevitable.

"Shit!" You curse. "Tarin, watch out!"

Tarin doesn't say a word as she jerks the control stick to the side, angling Clementine's hull at the last second right as the lance hits. There's a right flesh and Clementine jerks and rumbles as the VT continues on, slamming its full weight into Clementine as well and toppling both VTs over with a loud THUD. The hit is so hard that the internal light shorts out, shrouding the entire crew compartment in darkness.

"Tarin, Tarin!" You yelp.

"I'm okay." Tarin mumbles in the darkness.

From the way it sounds, she's definitely not okay. To make matters worse, you can hear clanking as a hatch outside is swung open. Clearly, your hit didn't kill the the whole crew of that VT.

It wouldn't surprise me.

In Battletech, the Draconis Combine does equip some soldiers with vibroblades, which can cut through some pretty tough shit (though it's probably too short to cut through anything mech-sized except the cockpit).

Then they made the mech-sized Vibroblade, which is much scarier and much more effective in damaging 'mechs.

You couldn't let that guy move around freely. For all you knew he could have something to further damage Clementine, or worse, breach the crew compartment with. You crawl for the hatch, which was not at a vertical angle due to Clementine being knocked onto her side, and push it open. As you crawl out, sidearm drawn, you can see the knight, his silver armor covered in grime, soot, and burnt blood as he clambers out of his downed VT, wielding a very large and very intimidating greatsword.

"To the death!" He bellows upon seeing you.

Well, you had a gun and he didn't. Problem was, you weren't too sure if your sidearm could punch his armor. You see the pintle mounted .50 caliber MG still secure its mounting. However, it would take some valuable time to pry it off and getting it ready to fire...

Part of the way plate carriers work is that they're flexible and provide resistance over a distance (even if that distance is less than a centimetre). Plate armour is rigid, providing resistance only at the moment of impact, which is usually low enough that a bullet can penetrate.

"Axel, you're clear to fire." You announce in your mic.

"Gotcha covered, Roy." Axel says cheerfully as you hear a storm of bullets whiz over your head as Brick's coaxial .30 caliber MG barks. Though his armor could protect him from small handgun bullets, it might as well have been paper against heavier MG rounds. The knight's body twitches wildly as its perforated by the storm of bullets.

"What about the second VT?" You ask, looking around.

"Bannon and Parker nailed it. Side shot." Axel tells you. "Bannon and Alex have already moved on. Tasked us to stay behind to keep an eye on you."

"I-Is Tarin okay?" Alfie asks.

"She was still active. Let me check." You dash back to Clementine and crawl back in through the hatch. You note the internal light was back on, giving you visibility again.

"Fixed the lights while you were out." Tarin says simply, and she looks like a mess. Her hand is clamped firmly over her right eye, and her forehead and hair are covered in burn marks and blood. It looked as if the lance had exploded right outside her viewport. The armored glass was gone, and you could see fragments of it jutting out of Tarin's arm, blood slowly seeping into her jacket.

"You're definitely not okay." You grimace as you grab the first aid kit.

"Still well enough to drive. These are just flesh wounds." Tarin insists. "I've checked Clementine's systems. The damage is mostly cosmetic. We're still good to go."

"Good to go my ass. You're not going anywhere." You grunt as you get a disinfecting wipe and start wiping away at Tarin's face. "Is your eye all right?"

"Just stings a bit." Tarin takes her hand off and opens her eye, showing to be red and irritated, no doubt from the blast.

"Honestly." You sigh as you hand her the first aid kit. "Patch your arm while I work on your head. You look like a real mess."

Tarin wordlessly takes the kit, and begins the painful process of extracting the shards of glass out of her arm, which she does without complaint or any sign of discomfort.

"So Roy, you still need us to stick around here?" Axel asks, his voice betraying that he was anxious to get back in the hunt.

"Don't be s-so rude, Axel!" Alfie chides. "We can't just l-leave them alone out here!"

"I-If you insist." Alfie stammers.

"We'll just wait for Artois' party to catch up." You say.

"Fair enough." Tarin nods. You both clamber out of Clementine and sit against her armored hull, waiting for assistance to arrive.

"You think they'll get him?" Tarin asks.

"I'm sure they will." You answer. "If we caught up to them this fast, taking them out should be easy."

"I hope you're right." Tarin says as she pulls out a surprisingly intact ration bar from her pocket and starts chewing on it. "Just a bit frustrating we won't be there to see it."

"Well, we can't have everything." You shrug.

"So answer honestly, Roy." Tarin turns to you, her eyes boring deep into your own. "Why didn't you want to continue? Why hold us back here like this?"

Your hand unconsciously clenches into a fist, thankfully out of Tarin's sight.

"Well, the truth is..." You bite your lip, flashes of past nightmares flitting through your vision. "I almost thought I lost you."

"Really?" Tarin's eyes widen a bit. "Did I really worry you that much?"

"Look, Tarin, I really care about you. More than a driver. More than a friend. I..." You nearly choke up. "I just can't imagine being in a VT without you."

"That... that means a lot, Roy." Tarin actually smiles as she grasps your hand with her own. "But I have to know, if this happens again during another mission, what will you prioritize? Me or the mission?"

If we say the mission, then she'll admire our dedication but know that she's not the most important thing to us (which people tend to expect from their partners for whatever reason).

If we say her, then she'll beg off of us because 'duty comes first' or some shit while having her torch lit even brighter by that fact.

The unfair question comes across as the typical indecisive bullshit. Not likely going to endear us to her.

"That's an unfair question and you know it." You frown as you flick Tarin in the forehead. "There's no good answer to that."

"You have a point." Tarin winces as she rubs her forehead. "Guess I got carried away."

"Anyways, we've always looked out for each other, and I don't see that changing." You assure her. "I want to say the mission. It's the right thing to say. We're soldiers. But here I am, right now, with you. I'm prioritizing you, because you're my crew. You're my friend. I don't want to lose you."

"I guess you're right." Tarin smiles as she rests her head on your shoulder. "Shit, maybe you were right. I feel really tired all of a sudden."

"Heh, see?" You chuckle.

"This is where you do the thing with my hair." Tarin whispers.

"Oh right!" You laugh as you pat her on the head, running your fingers through her dark hair.

"Make all the worries melt away..." You hear her mumble contently as she nuzzles against your shoulder.

Unfortunately, the moment doesn't last as you hear the telltale signs of an approaching VT, the ground vibrating at regular intervals as the massive vehicle approaches. Fortunately, it's Willem's VT that emerges from the trees.

"Lord Powers! What are you doing here?" Willem asks, surprised as he pops out of his hatch.

"Ah well, we took a hit." You explain. "Tarin here got injured. Mind helping us back to camp?"

"Of course! Of course!" Willem nods rapidly. "We'll have you up and running in no time! We er.... didn't interrupt anything, did we?"

"No, no, we're fun." You say, reluctantly getting up. "Let's get out of here."

Willem helps get Clementine back up to her feet, and is even considerate enough to give you an escort back to the camp. For the time being, you temporarily take over driving duties while Tarin rests in your commander seat. Fortunately, you were trained to be able to fulfill the driver role in case of an emergency. You knew how to do it, but you weren't nearly as proficient at it as Tarin was. Even so, you manage to limp Clementine back to camp without hitting THAT many trees.

"You are the worst driver ever." Tarin mumbles, her eye still closed. "I hardly got any sleep at all."

"Well I'd like to see you do be- shit." You sigh, realizing the folly of your poor retort.

"Thought so." Tarin says a little smugly.

You CAREFULLY maneuver Clementine back to the motor pool and help Tarin out of it, where a first aid team is waiting to take her in. Willem gives you a nod before leaving in his own VT, no doubt to rejoin the hunt.

You accompany Tarin and the first aid team all the way back to the infirmary, where she's given a more thorough check to look for any hidden or missed injuries. You of course, have to wait outside for this process, for the sake of her privacy. After about half an hour, the head doctor exits the tent.

"Well, most of her injuries are relatively light. Just some cuts and burns. Nothing that would disqualify her from combat duty." The doctor says. "She doesn't have to stay here, but it it recommended she at least stay the night for observation. Otherwise, she's perfectly healthy."

"And her eye?" You ask.

"Just irritated from ash and dust. We've already cleaned it out, so her vision will return normally." The doctor explains. "Anyways, you're free to see her now."

"Thanks, doc." You nod as you enter the tent just in time to see Tarin sitting on her cot, putting her jacket back on.

"Whoa, whoa, Tarin. What are you doing!?" You gasp.

"Getting ready to leave?" Tarin tilts her head curiously. Her face and hair were cleaned up, but there was still a protective bandage over her right eye. "The doctor said I was cleared for duty."

"Let's see if Egan's made any new discoveries." You say.

"Right." Tarin nods and follows you out of the infirmary, though you get the feeling that she's walking a bit closer to you know, her arm occasionally brushing against yours. It's not unpleasant or anything, just different.

You finally reach the tent that Egan has been using as a makeshift lab and enter just in time to see Egan sawing the skull of one of the undead troopers open. You have to fight to keep your stomach under control.

"Oh, I thought you two were in the field." Egan says flatly. "That was quick."

"Well, our participation got kinda cut short." You laugh nervously. "Anyways, did you make any major breakthroughs?"

"Well, being able to study intact components has given me more insight into how these things are controlled." Egan pauses her work and takes her gloves off, motioning for you to follow her. "Let me show you."

Egan guides you to a new section of the tent that is gladly corpse and gore free, where she shows you what looks to be a large radio transmitter.

"As we all know, Reikland uses wireless control signals to guide the actions of their undead soldiers." Egan says, holding up a small antenna. "The signals are picked up by these receivers implanted into their spines, and are translated into commands for the undead to follow."

"And what does this thing do?" Tarin asks, eyeing the contraption warily.

"Well, I've managed to isolate the specific frequencies these devices have been tuned to." Egan explains. "Using that data, I developed this specialized jammer that will hopefully disrupt the activities of undead soldiers in a certain radius."

"That sounds extremely useful." You agree. "And it could be a serious gamechanger."

"But it's just a prototype, so it's not without its... drawbacks." Egan warns. "First, it needs a dedicated power source to function, so I designed it as a VT module. I'm not sure of its range or efficacy, either. It's something that would need to be tested in the field."

"Sounds dangerous." Tarin frowns.

"Sounds necessary." You sigh.

"Another caveat, this module's power requirements are fairly high, so its operation may hamper the capabilities of your own VT while in use." Egan cautions.

"I think it would suit Axel and Alfie's VT better." You muse. "Brick isn't too mobile anyways, and with that armor, they'd stand a better shot at surviving if they have to stop moving."

"That does sound like a good idea." Tarin nods in agreement.

"Hmmmm, I'll talk to them about it when they get back, then." Egan nods. "One more matter. I can continue doing my research on the undead soldiers. I think with some more time, I can backtrace the source of their primary control signal."

"Primary control signal?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Of course. The signal has to come from somewhere, right?" Egan glances at you. "The transmitters we've seen in the field are merely relays extending the range of the signal. It's my belief that if we destroy this source, we can end the undead soldier threat once and for all. Or, I can start studying those Panther hulls to see if there are any weak spots we can exploit."

At that moment, Willem bursts through the tent doors, out of breath.

"The hunt is successful!" The squire gasps. "The traitorous Lord Kalendor has been apprehended! Lord Artois takes him to the center of the camp for judgment! He expects your presence there as well!"

"We bring here both a COWARD and a TRAITOR!" Artois bellows, drawing his sword and holding it against a whimpering Kalendor's neck. "Kalendor has broken his oaths to his king and to his fellow Bretons! In addition, he fled rather than honorably face his crimes! The laws of Breton are clear on the punishment of such disgrace! DEATH!"

The Bretons begin cheering, while you notice some of the Tileans looking uncomfortable. You see some of your platoon among them as well.

"Look, Lord Artois." Sawyer steps forward. "I know I have no place to judge you and your laws, but I have to make it clear at my displeasure at my camp being turned into an execution ground. That's not how things are run in Tilea."

"Then it is a good thing we are not in Tilea." Artois points out and catches sight of you. "Ah! Roy! Good of you to come!"

Lord Artois then walks over to you, the Bretons parting way for him as he slaps the sword in your arms.

"You are the one this coward has attempted to take the life of, so it is only natural that you have the honor of taking his head!"

Your grip tightens on the sword.

But shoot him. We would botch a sword swing.

We're honorary, and it is what is expected. But we should ask him why he broke his oath before we do it.

We're gonna have issues over this...
