~Night, Sixthday~

Night has fallen when you at last return to Cernorian. At your behest your chief minister, Ralero, rallies your Honor Guard, the Khazidite Bound Hunters, and Thorn, gathering them all at the foot of the palace for you. The mission is burning in your mind, and you have a difficult time containing yourself, the slippery Count Piotr has been plotting with your perhaps soon-to-be enemy, the Order of the Tower. He has been secretly having a group of soldiers trained to be Order-equivalents in his land, perhaps in an attempt to have you overthrown. You do not take such actions lightly.

Last you heard he was in Cernorian training your soldiers, and thus he'd be near the Drill Yard in the house he and Eleisha share.

The situation with the Order is presently very tense. You have promised to not engage in any acts of open aggression against them, as they have with you. Open conflict, in your current state, would be a disaster. The Order's Elite soldiers are far beyond the means of even your Bound Hunters, and while you, Thorn, and Elsabeth are capable combatants, you cannot defeat an army alone. However, you are fortunately spared much of their ire as they are currently engaged in a large-scale war against a greater power.

Despite this, your recent victory over the Raiders has brought the attention of the larger nations on Vastov, albeit very slightly. It is inevitable, you realize, as you grow and continue to challenge the world around you and expand, that outside forces will become more and more invested in your future, either to see your destruction or your growth. It is therefore imperative that you clamp down on any sedition, and Count Piotr has crossed that line one time too many.

From the notes you were given, the Monastery to Thusk is in his capital city of County and you know exactly where to go

>A) Arrest Piotr first and then clear the cell out.
>B) Go and attack the Monastery while they sleep.
>C) Gather more information.

"Ralero, use your sources to gather as much information as you can. I want to know everything that has come and gone out of that Monastery. The rest of you, come with me, we're going to attack the Monastery. Elsabeth," you say, turning to face the young Maven, "I want you to take some of these Bound Hunters and a few of my Honor Guard and surround the Count's location. In twenty minutes I want you to break in there and capture him. The rest of you, follow me!"

Their orders given, your subjects follow your wishes, and you set off with Thorn jogging at your side. "This Count is a traitor, my Lord. I would be honored to fell him in single combat, should you be willing to give me that privilege." You nod, keeping the idea in mind as you thank him for the offer.

Twenty minutes later you and your men dismount from your exhausted steeds and gather at the Monastery's large door. On your command the door is thrown open and the few priests who are awake gasp in surprise, but are quickly stifled by the Bound Hunters who gather them up in their arms and cover their mouths. You nod and they gag the men and bind them.

Your Honor Guard search the room quickly and one of them gestures after a few minutes of searching, revealing the large door that is hidden under a carpet. The other Guards gather up torches and and stand around the door, gripping the handles. On your signal they pull it open quickly and Thorn leaps down, the Khazidites surging after them, each man moving quickly despite their great size.

A cry of surprise fills the air from beneath and the sounds of violence quickly come up the stairs. You head down the stairs, flanked by your guards, and once you enter the main area you see the struggle in progress.

Five of the initiates are dead on the floor, parted from the burden of their heads, and the other ten are engaging the Bound Hunters with their silvery swords. Thorn is lunging like a viper at a heavily armored man, an Order Knight.

[cont]
>>
>>45643745

The two men are very closely matched. The Order Knight's shield meets both of Thorn's daggers with near inhuman speed, but the elf is able to avoid his foe's clumsy-by-comparison sword strokes just as easily. The two appear deadlocked. A Bound Hunter lies dead on the floor, his skin burned away from his chest and his bones bleached white underneath. His brothers seem to fight with greater frenzy at the loss of a beloved comrade.

>A) Draw the Spear and engage the Knight, aim to kill.
>B) Order your Honor Guard to attack the Knight, aim to restrain him

You have faith in the elf, and command your Honor Guard to help the Bound Hunters. The struggle is brief, but violent, another Honor Guardsman pays the ultimate price, but at the end of it all, the Order Knight is disarmed, and unhanded by one of Thorn's knives, kneeling in front of you with a blade at his neck. The initiates are all dead, save for three, who are equally restrained. The four men are quickly tied, hand and foot to prevent escape, and Thorn calls out a loud cry, high pitched and joyous, at his victory before loudly calling,

"Majesty, this was a great victory. We have captured a genuine Knight of the Order, and quite a skilled one to stand against one such as me. He is awaiting your questions." Your Honor Guard take cloth from the fallen initiates and bind the Order Knight's hand up to prevent him from bleeding out and his helm is removed, showing a scowling young man with a shorn head.

"You'll have nothing from me!" He clenches his jaw and closes his eyes, insisting on silence. You look over him and rub your bristly jaw.

"We'll see how you feel in a few nights. Bring them to the castle. We're going back. Thorn, search the room, see if you can find anything useful." You head up the stairs and glance at the bound and gagged priests. It is considered highly irreverent to the Gods to punish their servants too dearly, and these are men of Thusk. However, they have housed these traitors for who knows how long.

As the Bound Hunters carry off the captives, your Honor Guard still flank you. The leader of them speaks, "Sire, what do you wish be done with these lot? Shall I escort them back to the castle as well? Or may we take their final prayers?"

>A) Take them for questioning as well.

"Remove their gags. I want to speak to them." The Guards remove the men's gags and they all begin apologizing profusely, "Forgive us, your Majesty, please, mercy! We had no intention to sponsor these actions. Please!" You raise your hand to calm them and indicate the head Priest. "You, speak."

The older man bows his head, averting his eyes and fixing them on the ground, "Sire, please, forgive us. The man, the Order Knight, is named Toldred von Lahtz, he is a relative of one of the Five Masters, though distantly. He came to us and said that he was here on a holy mission from the High Church and had selected us to be considered for advancement in the Church. We, naturally, agreed, but a few weeks later, he showed up with those initiates of his and told us that if we gave up their presence, or their activities, we'd be disemboweled for our blasphemy."

Gag him and ask the other guy the same question and than go and see what info is gathered to see if they are telling the truth.
>>
>>45644691

You order him gagged and proceed through the other Priests and gather what information you can gather.

The rest don't tell you much more, but you do get names, and several of them describe Count Piotr very well and mention that he had shown up several times to check on the initiates and even took gold from the Order Knight. Additionally, they reveal what secret code they used to talk when they believed themselves to be in secret. Finally, and this excited you the most, they tell you that the Count feared you showing up to check on him while he was here, or appearing in his castle and finding the Order gold, so he had it hidden in a small curio in Eleisha's house. You release the Priests, after all, if you need to, you can always arrest them later.

You and your Guard return to the castle to find all the people you sent out gathered at the steps of the Palace with a look of triumph. "Sire," Elsabeth says with a bow of her head, "We have captured the traitor Piotr. He attempted to flee before we even entered the house, but catching him was easy for us. He is in the dungeon with the other captives, kept far apart from one another."

After she gives her news Ralero offers you his assurance that he has his best men investigating, and even spoke with Eleisha who gave them full access to her house to search for any clues. This has been a hugely successful evening, in regards to calming your territories, and you still have some hours left in the night.

"Sire? How do you wish to proceed," Ralero asks you with a small smile.

>A) Let them stew for the evening, I'll handle them in the morning.
>B) Let's get to the interrogation. Torture the initiates and get what you can from them, then question the Knight.
>C) Talk to Piotr, torture all the rest.

"Keep those guards alert and stop them from communicating in any way. If anyone talks, silence them, forcefully if necessary. No one but the essential personnel must know about this. I will deal with them in the morning. Have some information ready when I wake." He nods and says that your will shall be done.

You and Elsabeth head upstairs and she takes post outside of your room. As you move to close the door you hear a voice calling out for you, "Sire, a moment!" It's Thorn, and he bows deeply, "Forgive me for the rude intrusion, Master, but I have a request." You nod and gesture for him to speak, "Yes, go ahead."

The elf clears his throat and speaks, "Sire, it is the desire of every man such as I to try to achieve the great feats that historians and bards will talk about for years to come. I am remiss to question your orders, but, I would like a chance to prove my worth to you by completing a great feat. Are there any you could request of me?"

"The fae are difficult to handle, Thorn, I would have you go into the mountains as I ordered, and take a small group of soldiers with you to train as you work. Come to me with the result." He bows, thanking you deeply as he rushes out of the castle and Elsabeth shakes her head, "You are far too generous, Sire." You give her a small smile, "Yes, that's why I keep you around. Good night, Elsabeth." And with that you close the door.

~Morning, Seventhday~

You awaken, but feel strangely. You glace around and notice immediately why, no one has come knocking on your door to wake you, there is no rumor of any military activity, no Centaurs at the gate, nothing odd, and no Ralero with the weekly announcement. It's odd, you think, to wake after being busy for these past few weeks. You stretch, wash yourself, dress and head outside to a waiting Elsabeth. "Good morrow, Sire." You nod to her and gesture for her to follow you downstairs.

Ralero is sitting at the table in the Great Hall, surrounded by courtiers, messengers, scouts, and librarians who are all pouring over the notes on the table. When he sees you he dismisses them immediately and bounds over.

"Sire, good morning. Forgive me for not being there to awaken you, but I had to finish the last of my report. Here you are." You nod and take the papers and begin flipping through them, skimming them and gathering the following:

The efforts of Piotr to raise this seditious force have been going on for little over a year now. However, the bad news is that the men you captured or killed are just half of the total force, the other half having secreted themselves into the Order Kingdom as merchants to receive more training there. They are set to return in either a week or a month, the data is conflicting on that one. You also gather the names of the three living men and the relation of the Knight, he is nephew to one of the Masters of the Order, far closer than was thought.

[cont]
>>
>>45645922

You nod and thank Ralero for his rapid and thorough work. "Well now, don't we have an interesting situation. A nobleman, lesser though he may be, is in our captivity for trespass on a foreign land without introducing himself to the Master of the land. We could just execute him publicly and be done with it. Alternatively, he could be a valuable bargaining chip..." You mutter these words, half to him and half to yourself as Ralero nods, "Of course, sire, there are many ways to proceed. How do you wish to go forward?"

[Select several if you wish.]

You smile, "Ralero, have the swiftest messenger we can send the following message." He prepares his pen as you begin to speak.

"Most Honorable Masters of the Order of the Tower, it is with the greatest disappointment and surprise that I was informed through the actions of my agents that a member of your noble family was found in my lands promoting rebellion, sedition, and treason. As Lords yourselves, I am sure we can both agree on the absolute need to control all lands under our control, and all of our servants. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I must bring this man to justice. Should my hand be stayed, however, it would require a direct and public response to spare this man's life.

-King Valorian of Vastov."

He presents you the pen which you sign with a flourish and emboss your signet upon. The page is then folded and he promises it will be sent with the fastest man available. You nod and then your smile grows a few teeth, "Send word to the other peers of the realm, a trial is to be commenced against Count Piotr. Count Grigori, Duchess Natalia, and Contessa Eleisha will be present to judge him. Summon the Barons and Baronesses as well to be the Jury. We will see justice be done."

Ralero drafts the notices quickly and summons more messengers who send out the word. "And, sire, what of the initiates? They are largely nameless men, lowborn commoners of little worth. What do you wish of them?"

"Have the jailer question them, as peacefully as possible, and tell them that for written statements, sworn before a Priest of Thusk, that their punishments of life will be commuted instead to ten years of forced labor." He nods and carries out your orders. You are served breakfast and eat it pleasantly, chatting with the largely unresponsive Elsabeth before he returns with a bow, "Sire, they have all taken the deal eagerly and are submitting their statements now." You nod and smile, feeling that everything is working out for the best.

"Well, sire, is there anything you would like to do today? Or would you rather remain at home and prepare for the inevitable response of the Order?" He quickly runs down the state of affairs.

Construction projects throughout the nation are proceeding well, the foundations of both Locative Portals are established and the work on their arches have begun. Your new agents and hires are settling in and will be ready for work tomorrow in the morning. Trade is proceeding admirably as usually, and the military is keeping itself sharp.

In the realm of under-explored or untouched affairs that require your attention are the strange changes to the Fae Woods, the Royal Visit to the Centaur Lands, the Royal Visit to Alesvi (now that it is part of the Kingdom), and perhaps another cordial visit to the Kingdom of La Faresse to explain in greater detail about the events at the ball.

His mention of the ball also makes you concerned on the whereabouts of Vella. The last time you met she seemed intent on causing strife between you and Queen Bethanne.

Perhaps it would be more merciful to them to have a bit of warning so that they may prepare a proper Royal welcome?"

"No need, I do not wish great fanfare be made." Ralero bows his head, "Of course, sire, as you wish." As he turns to leave you raise your hand, "Ralero, a moment." The young man turns and faces you with a nod, "Of course, sire, what is it?"

You draw closer to him and tell him, very softly, "I also want a group of scouts put together to find the whereabouts of the Zestraid goddess, the one who calls herself Vella." He cocks his eyebrow, "Yes....I have heard mention of her, but how will we know it is her?" You nod, "Oh, you'll have no trouble knowing that." He nods, "As you wish, I will have the men informed to come and report once they have found any sign of her."

He leaves to go make his preparations as you stroll to the Throne Room and take a seat in your throne which has grown cold from lack of use. It's odd, you think as you rub the arm of the seat, how many times you saw your Father sitting here whenever you visited, but how rarely you occupied it since you were crowned.

Elsabeth takes up position at the front of the Throne Room and as you look at her back you ponder on where to make your next move. The Kingdom is in a state of flux right now, and while the Order is certainly no friend of yours, it is not necessary to make strikes against them. You have just won a war, and engaging in another one, especially one that would be so overmatched and protracted could be disastrous. Additionally, there is the whispering of the great enemy beyond the Order, the Tyranny.

It is a rare moment of introspection you are afforded right now, a chance to truly question yourself and think. You glance over to your right, where just at the extent of your reach stands your spear, as golden and pristine as when you claimed it. The thoughts of the voices that echoed in your mind return and you begin to wonder.

I'd like to foster closer relations to La Faresse and the Seelie Court. Maybe we could enter some sort of defensive alliance with the Seelie? It looks as though they have at least a small border with the Order, so they're probably at least at some threat of invasion.

[We're nowhere close to the big leagues yet, I would focus on getting our Magical tradition improved, as well as working on some Elite units. That's really what turns a normal army into a high-class army. Siege would also be good if we plan on big attacks.]

>>45647513

The Seelie are always difficult to deal with, you admit to yourself, but since they share a border with the Order, and are rarely troubled, it would benefit you greatly if you could get your soldiers to move through their lands and strike, should the time for war appear. Additionally, La Faresse is a prime choice for an ally, due to the already friendly relationship you have with them. Unfortunately, La Faresse is politically not very important and not that powerful, militarily.

Your thoughts are interrupted by the arrival of Ralero who announces that the procession is nearly complete and that you should prepare. You nod and dress into your finest garments before heading down to the courtyard. You tie your spear to your back and mount your finest steed before heading off to West Vastov.

Dusk has fallen by the time you arrive at the gates of Alesvi. People are gathered around the main road and wave, cheering as a line of torch-bearers lead you to the Duchess' Palace. The cries of "Valorian King!" and "Hail the King!" fill the air as you arrive the steps of the Palace. The Duchess is waiting and bows her head to you, allowing you to lead the way into the Palace.

A grand feast is prepared and you are brought to the head of the table. The Duchess sits at your right hand side and the meal begins. She leans over to talk to you with a smile, "I am overjoyed at the news of your success. Already I have noticed a great increase in the happiness of my...our subjects." You nod and smile at her, "Of course, it is only natural that our people should be happy to be united with one another."

The Duchess twists a strand of her frizzy red hair and muses, "So...I haven't seen any of those Order cretins since you spoke to them. Is that to mean that we are in pleasant diplomatic relations with them?" You laugh and shake your head, "No, not exactly, Natalia. They are proving to be troublesome. Tell me, have there been any interesting goings on since I was here last?"

She nods, "Oh, yes, I have heard mention of sightings in the sea of large ships, low built to the water, with massive sails near. They haven't drawn close enough to see who is in them, but I am told that these are the people from Jovalheim, but I am not able to confirm or deny that."

You nod, "Yes, I have a man in my employ from their lands." She nods, "How fascinating! These wild men are of great interest to me for their strange ways and appearance. Do you know anything of Jovalheim?" You shake your head, making a note of it to Ralero to ask Brenholf about it when you return to the capital.

"So, Sire, obviously now that we are reunited I am certain we are to be taxed, but I must make a request first, rude though it may be." You gesture for her to continue, "Since we have had such a difficult time under the heel of the Order, I would request that you resettle some men and women from either Essland or Greater Vastov in my lands to help work the land and mines again?"

>A) Of course, I'd be happy to.
>B) We'll see what I can spare.

[Valorian King! Welcome back, friend. Hope to have you in the future ones when you can.]

Hint that it will be easier if she offers incentives for the people to move to her lands.

Suggest that perhaps we need not get involved, and that she might be better served publicizing some sort of bargain or offer to tempt settlers.
Maybe also offer her a five year tax reduction? It would give her a chance to get back on her feet while still funneling some of her wealth into our coffers.

"Duchess, while I would be able to force people to move, I think it would be better for both of us if you would perhaps offer them something for picking up their lives and moving through the mountains? Or, perhaps, would you like it to wait until the portal is open? With that open it spares a great deal of the hardship of moving through the mountains. Additionally, perhaps I could ease the tax burden on Vastov Minor until such a time as you are more ready to handle such a burden? I believe a period of five years at half the usual tax burden should suffice to give you time to rebuild."

She gasps in joyous surprise and bows her head repeatedly, "Thank you so much, Sire! I promise, we shall be productive to a fault. You will not regret this display of mercy." She touches the corners of her mouth with a napkin as she nods and smiles.

"Ah, of course, I nearly forgot. Seeing as trade has reopened between us and Essland we have been able to import more vitally needed timber and cord, and as such, production of Crossbows have increased sharply. In a month or so we will be able to produce them regularly. I am also told that your Countess Primere is doing great work in Hoogland. The burned land is being reclaimed and turned into farmland with amazing speed. Oh! And the construction has begun on a National Dock, though of course it would require your blessing to be considered such. Her missives made it seem that she is extremely eager to speak."

>A) Plan to see your Countess Primere, Vella
>B) Stay in Alesvi for a while.

"Then I'll make my plans to go see her." The rest of the night is spent enjoying the company of the courtiers and lesser nobles in the Palace, going to your chambers, and then going to sleep with the daunting thought of meeting Vella tomorrow fresh on your mind.

~Dawn, Newday~

You and your entourage gather at the gates and bid farewell to your new subjects in Vastov Minor. The Duchess herself bids you farewell as you and the procession pass through the large gate that separates Vastov Minor from Essland.

The rocky and rugged terrain of Vastov Minor gives way to the rolling hills and forests of Essland. True to her word, the land seems to be healing remarkably quickly from the poorly guided rulership of the Zestreid. People who are working the land stop and wave at your passage. As you move towards Hoogstrad a procession of peasants follows you towards the capital city.

Once you gain sight of the city a familiar voice enters your mind.

~Well, well, if it isn't my Sire, King Valorian. I guess you couldn't go too long without seeing me again.~ You chuckle at her usual tone and shake your head.

~I suppose you could say that, Vella. I am simply passing by to greet my new subjects. I'm surprised to see you actually working the land. Do you want the official title so badly?~ She gives a soft chuckle and you can feel her presence in your mind, but gently nudge at it, and she backs off.

~Perhaps I just like being useful. I have told you how useful I am, Valorian. Now, why don't you just give me the title and take me back to the Capital with you?~

>A) We'll see how you do in the job before you come back with me.
>B) No chance you come back with me.
>C) No title for you.
>D) Other
