This particular undertunnel (you wonder if that makes sense) you just came trough was built and shaped taking advantage of a big hole you feel once fell trough in your earlier, more bright days.
It’s complete and utter darkness was also a defensive measure, since it is also a maze of splitting tunnels filled with lots of dead ends; so even if the templars figured out the hollow rock taking a good rest is worth a shot.

The shiver from a slow, painful pant of pain drifts your thougts away, and you are reminded you did not kill Leader, your teeth clench as you recall what that odd ball said; it managed to enrage you ever since you remember.
Because it sometimes makes mistakes; like this time, since Leader is far from dead. And you dead sure either that the other herds underground would land the killing blow if they could, if the templars didn’t do it.

So you head up.
You don’t know what’s up; himehorns have been forced underground since… according to the herd records, maybe one hundred and twenty Leaders, but records may have been lost in time.
Leader will have to start a new one.
And why do you head up?
You consider plenty of reasons, alongside one simple fact; Templars are heading underground.

They won’t expect you up there, and they can’t cover every single exit from the caves because they’d run out of templars, even if they send smallnohorns to guard as well.
After all the caves are big, and the herds are plenty.

And Leader will see the surface.
>>
>>61953
oh okay. no biggie. I can handle it.
>>
>>61961

You wonder how much of your herd still lives, and how they are doing.
You quickly realize this is no time to think about that.

The slow pants of pain from Leader in the musclehorns arms is the only sound that follows as you, three hornmothers and four haremhorns, one holding with both arms one of those big baskets the haremhorns use to take out the trash.
You faintly notice just two horns and two eyes peeking from the edge of the basket, her tiny arms clinging to the edge, as the way is still a bit dark; that’s going to be a musclehorn and that musclehorn will defend the herd after you can’t.

The big light above gets stronger with every step… and even after everything you went trough you can’t help feeling a little bit excited; we are going to see the surface.
The endless fields of green that the old old old old Leader used to complain about every time she stepped on a branch.
You chosen the unknown to almost certain death… because there may be a miracle waiting for Leader up there.

And before you notice your herd stops a few steps in front of the exit.
You gasp; a powerful wind is blowing your hair away, you close your eyes and you feel a strong shock from your right shoulder, because along your left arm you tried to lift it to cover from the wind.
>>
File: ....png (3 KB, 224x147)

3 KB PNG
Driven by hope you run up and smile; and your smile quickly vanishes as your eyes take on all the light.
For ahead of you is a big, endless field of white; no grass in sight to take on the faint warmth of the sun.
White below, white above; it’s a cloudy day.

You turn around to the musclehorn and Leader and hear a quiet “Uh…” coming from her pretty lips.
Soon all the himehorns are standing next to each other looking at the white desert; you just notice the cave exit ends in a tiny white cliff, and your feet feel cold.
After a while there is only one thing you feel like saying; “We should rest.”
Silently, everyone heads for the rocky cave entrance and you are left alone staring at the white from black eyes. “…What now?” you whisper.

Faintly, you hear the haremhorn teacher singing a lullaby, one you are very familiar with: “Happy horns, happy eggs, happy herd…”.

Leader is slowly breathing on the musclehorn’s arms… she looks like she’s slowly melting, blood slowly falling through the side of one of the arms holding her.
It feels like she could break if shaken too roughly.
You walk towards her and her gaze drifts into yours.
“I wonder what happened after we left.”
“Something terrible”, you reply, “if it left the world so cold.”
“I can’t die here.”
You are shaken by the sudden glare on her eyes.
“This place is too ugly! I can’t help the herd from here, where is the grass?! Nohorns must be very, very awfully bad with gardens!”
You smile, your eyes still a bit stiff.

As for the musclehorn herself, she just seems upset. You wonder if she blames herself.

You know you do.

You walk towards the sound of peaceful lullaby and the nursery haremhorn turns her horns at you, and gently turns the basket towards you.

You look into it; it’s big, but after the hornmothers and haremhorns got the smallhorns they’ve been holding so far inside the basket got a little crowded, tiny horns snoring, tiny horns holding hands, tiny horns talking, and a tiny horn falling over a snoring tiny horn as it wins the tug of war they play with tiny ropes.
Looking inside the basket, you notice it has its own tiny warehouse of carrots neatly cutted to tiny pieces holded to one of the corners by a blanket of sorts like a bag, pierced by ropes into the basket, another bag like the first filled with very tiny blankets and a tiny hole in another of the corners.
You wonder what could it be, until one of the smallhorns sits on it, you hear a tiny clash against the snow and then the smallhorn stands after another smallhorn tell it to “Huggy!”.
You quickly give up trying to understand how did the haremhorn manage to do all this in the time the templars came in until you all left; maybe it was ready already?

You just shrug and think to yourself “haremhorns”.

Mean Templar Bullies broke the pact and came down to kill all the Himehorns. We're noping the fuck out of our caves, back to the surface.

Also, we used to be the Herd Leader, but we stepped aside because we were losing touch with reality. We have a painful thing called a Pathfinder that will hurt, but snap us back to the really real world.

You are Old Leader. Old Leader sometimes has moments where things aren't real but seem like it is.
You have the pathfinder that hurts alot but makes you feel better, using it to much though makes it harder to get back to normal.
Vampires and Templars fought on the surface for a long time and Himehorns stayed down in the caves.
Templars are meanies and now they've come down into the caves and have hurt a lot of the himehorns in our herd.
Now we are running away but don't know where to go.

You turn around. White and white face towards you; nothing more than white.

As you near the edge of the cliff you notice it’s not that high; and it still makes you dizzy.

You walk backwards and shake your head; once you feel your blood flow again you notice a snowy pathway that leads below.

It’s rather slim, but as long as your herd does not stack next to each other the space will be enough.

You turn around again.
Two of the three remaining hornmothers sit togueter by the wall on the cave entrance, both staring blankly at the wall ahead, crossing arms with each other as the haremhorns lean their heads and white short horns on their shoulders while they caress their black long hair; the hornmothers don’t seem to notice.

You let out a short sigh as you realize one of these hornmothers was dancing on a table, shouting in order to annoy the other by burying her words in the sound; and the one next to her was sit right in front yelling at her.

The other hornmother sits a bit further from the first, a haremhorn behind her engulfing her shaking frame with her arms and legs as the hornmother hides her head on her knees and slowly spins the heavy part of a short hammer against the floor with one hand.

They seem very scared.

Your attempt to move your right arm is quickly subsided by a sharp bolt of pain.
It doesn’t numb you or scare you; the pathfinder hurts far worst, and the pain may help you not fall asleep.
You just let your arm cling from your shoulder and try not to move too suddenly.
It also seems your knife fell while you were tackling the door over and over.

You are an old himehorn, a very tall hornmother; a former Leader that abdicated due to mental illness.

Sometimes you get paralyzed and start dreaming instantly, warping your perception of reality; sometimes it’s very hard to notice.

Time flows on as you sleep, but you are ready; the contraption attached to your left hand will wake you up should you the tiny central wire.

It hurts a lot. And as of today, you barely feel your left hand anymore. You may have to use it more than once in a row.
(At any time during the quest choices you can use the
>Pathfinder
in order to wake up. Beware; each use makes it less effective, and it may take more than one stab to bring you back. You can use the Pathfinder alongside other choices as well; but the pain is numbing and may make things harder.)

The nursery haremhorn is still quietly singing at the basket putting on a nice smile.
This is one of the very few times you can hear a haremhorn actually talking, they don’t have much to say to each other since they developed body language and coordination to a high degree so they don’t waste time talking; but they must be sharing stories about the hornmothers between themselves, either that or they are a carefully hidden hivemind.

The other three haremhorns are hugging the three hornmothers that sit on the floor at the cave entrance.
They seem to be holding the hornmothers tightly; and one of the haremhorns is covered in blood, still holding her knife.

You try not to think about it.

But looking again at the nursery haremhorn you notice she has blood in her too... around the mouth.

And you try not to think about it now.

You watch the himehorns go down the pathway one at one, in a slow row.
You go in last.
It seems the cliff was even shorter than you expected, maybe a whole life inside the cave does that.
You faintly recall the one time you climbed a ladder too tall the haremhorns use to paint the highest walls with symbols of your herd and funny images of musclehorns stuck rare places and ways, perhaps as a way to vent because of the awful smell the musclehorns catch when they go on a frenzy as they hunt. As you go down and try to keep your mind somewhere else you quickly gaze upon the musclehorn in the front and can’t help but notice Leader staring intently at you; she smiles with both eyes and mouth. You smile too; you think your smile may have looked a bit dull.
>>
Leader smile goes green, her eyes go green, everything turns into a sharp green for less than it takes to blink.
You cover your eyes. And open them. You look, scared, and notice a smallhorn looking from over the edge of the basket pointint at the distance with it's mouth wide open.

You look. Two gigantic cones of faint green light turn into a powerful white in the distance, a bit apart from each other, a bit inclined to each side.

Like horns.

Your herd stares in awe. Nobody moves.

"RUUUUUUUUUU-" You are cutted short by the lack of air in your old lungs but it doesn't matter; it's like the hornmothers got life stabbed brutally back into them, as they are now shouting "GREATHORN!!" "IT'S THE GREATHORN" and everybody is rushing below; one of the hornmothers slips right before the end of the path, but she lands well and keeps on running... and then stops, staring at the west. You stare too.
At the distance, at the long distance, there are tents. A lot of tents, near the caves.
With big banners with black crosses on them, some bigger than others, some more detailes. And you slowly, slowly turn back on a hunch; and you were right. It seems the templars are camping at the main entrances of the caves.
You are surrounded by both sides, and even if both seem very far you are not sure just how near the horns are.

But there is just one choice to be made.

Hope is the fuel of all action; and the herd just get a whole lot of it. Even if hope comes from the unimaginable, the unthinkable, as long as you can manage to deceive yourself it still is a powerful force to tap on.
And you just did. The whole herd is running straight trough the white into the bit white horns. You hear something, but don't bother to check until it reaches your side.

You are not alone.

You manage to turn your horns back as you sprint, even if your neck hurts; himehorns have come semiingly out of nowhere running along with your herd, some faster than others, some slipping in the way...

But a lot of himehorns.

Then the explosions shatter your confusion.

Tiny explosions, slight whistles in the air; himehorns all around you start falling and some are stepped on by others, but there are too many of you.
>>
You keep on running. You don't even check on Leader; she's on a musclehorn, she's going to be okay, she's going to live.

She's going to live.

The himehorn rampage quickly grows into a pandaemmonium, but one sound in front of you manages to break trough; a musclehorn's scream. You turn to your right; white hairs and black armor, suddenly all around with their big black still. A haremhorn is slashed open, a stray smallhorn is stepped on, another haremhorn clings on a templars back and buries her fangs in her neck; she almost manages to pull the whole head out.

You keep on running, but you feel a thin, cold shudder.

For just one brief moment you turn your head back; Leader is still on the musclehorn's arms, that it's still running... screaming. Pointing up front. You turn your horns again; you don't even manage to scream as you slip on the broken haremhorn and roll and roll and roll... when you open your eyes the himehorn stampede goes over you faster than a haremhorn washing a musclehorn's feet and you brace for the impact; it goes on for a while, but nobody steps on your big frame, and the power of hope lifts you and you run behind Leader.

Help. Given our mental state, we aren't exactly leader material, so trying to save the other leader should be a priority

You stop on your tracks, the sound of everything crushing at once in your mind; you run to Leader as she looks at you blankly. You surround her from behind and attempt to lift her with your only; and she bites your left hand with all her strenght. You endure the pain and, but Leader's elbow crashes into your chest and you drop her right over the musclehorn; she flinches. Then she looks at you straight in the eye, all covered in blood gore and tears, her eyes shining and her whole body trembling;

"RUN YOU PATHETIC DEFECTIVE!

RUN YOU WORTHLESS, STUPID WASTE OF A WRONGHORN!;

RUN OR I'L KILL YOU!

I'L KILL YOU!!!!"

Leader understands. We can't make it carrying her. She's saving as much of her herd as she can. And we can be Leader for a little bit, get things settled down, and then abdicate again.

You use the Pathfinder.

It doesn't work.

You try to move your right arm.

It's not there any longer.

Leader swallows; trembling, she grabs her only horn, rips it up...

And stabs herself deeply in the neck.

You don't feel anything at all.

We've been shot. We might not make it, but as long as we're running, the Templar bullies might shoot at us instead of another Himehorn.

Its all for the Herd.

I have to work in the morning and we're soooo close!

Must. Stay. Awake.

AAAAAAHHH! Cliffhangers!

This quest is great.

And be sure to archive for future herds, otherwise they get stuck reading about doing 4 naps and eating too many squids.

You kill your heart and run.

...

"Hurry! Come on in!"

"We are here to help!"

"Oh bloody hells just look at that what the hell is she?"

"Are you ok?"

"Are you ok? Hey?"

You faint.
