Your name is Keiichi Hirayama. You are seventeen years old, have a license to carry firearms and live in a world where magic has integrated itself within modern society. In this world, magus academies exist—educational institutions specifically for children with the gift of magic. You and your sister Airi are both students of one such academy and the two of you have caused no small amount of chaos over last year. So much so, that you both have somehow interrupted Japan’s premier magus academy battle tournament thrice in a row!

The Ministry of Education has decided enough is enough. They have forced you and your sister to complete ten tasks that will in some way assist the organization of the tournament this year. Will you and Airi be able to complete all tasks before the time of limit of three months is up? Or will you both be blacklisted from every educational institution in the entire country? The fate of your future career is in your hands, so don’t screw it up!

Roppongi, the six trees. A district in Tokyo, beloved for its night life scene. There is history in the area, of war and crime, and it is superimposed beneath the customs of the new era, mixing together to form faith and fuel for all kinds of urban magic arts. It is a place where men in business suits can drink themselves to the darkness, where hostesses apply their makeup and prepare themselves to face the hot lights and where dark, urban magic swirls around in back alleys and the corners of storm drains.

It is not, however, a place where boys are allowed to openly carry automatic rifles, even if they are fledgling magi. You are suddenly aware of this, as every pedestrian in the vicinity it staring at the hunk of black metal in your hands. Your sister tugs on your clothes. Heat flaring to your cheeks, you swear and quickly dispense your Howa back in the hyperspace. To the pedestrians, it would look like your rifle disappeared in thin air.

Then you remember what you’re here for and chase after the fucker in the top hat. Your sister and the heiress, whom you have a tenuous relationship with at best, follow.

“Get back here, you asshole!”

“Wait for us, onii-chan!”

“My my, that is a smug grin. I’ll look forward to testing it.”

The fucker, or Abe as he calls himself, is running towards the side of the street, where a traffic light awaits. He’s shoving men and women aside, alike. What will you do?

>>Keiichi: Let Florence freeze his feet.

She’s quick to act. A cluster of mana gathers in her palm and she stretches it forward. Ice forms on the pavement, a cold, spiky snake crawling its way up to your target’s legs. Pedestrians step out of the way, their skin shuddering at the cold. Abe looks down, his expression neutral. The frost climbs up his ankles. You can see the way he trips and falls on his face in your head.

Then, Abe is meters away from where he once was, his legs relieved of the cold. You blink. He smirks and continues to run like mad.

“What the hell was that!” You exclaim.

“It was some type of movement ability.” Airi says, grimacing, “It must be tied to his magic art. Speed, maybe?”

You turn to Florence. “What’s the range on that thing of yours?”

“Limited and it’s not suited for fast moving targets.” Florence explains, as you and the two girls barge across the crossing just before little green man flashes red. Abe is now running up a boulevard reserved for fancy restaurant and clothing shops. “If you can restrain him, I’ll be able to freeze him completely.”

“He’s going into there!” Airi cries, before you can finish process that information. There is a supermarket, a rather expansive one at that. A trolley goes bowling as your target shoves its middle-aged user into the concrete. Fruits, breads and tin cans scatter across the place like loose tennis balls. You deftly steer yourself around the assorted goods and cross the double doors, a sugary sweet jingle flowing through your ears.

“Excuse me, young man, you can’t just—” Abe vanishes and reappears behind a store clerk, who now wears a look of complete befuddlement. Magic tends to do that to the ordinary. You wish you could explain this to him, but there’s no time.

“I think this place has a back exit.” Airi mutters, “He wouldn’t come here, otherwise.”

It’s a little chilly in here. The lights are bright. Once again, everyone is staring. Abe climbs on a counter and jumps off, powering towards the fruit section on the left. To the right are aisles of goods—milk, cheese, instant noodles, oils and more. There’s even a section for kitchen appliances and gardening tools. Not that many have actual gardens in the big city, but it’s the thought that counts.

What will you do?

>Use the stock to your advantage.

“Split up!” You shout. The two girls nod and you all split up. As the most nimble, Airi chases after Abe, who is currently leaping above fruit tables and sending oranges and lemons flying like miniature cannonballs. Her scarf flutters in the rushing air, more than any natural piece of fabric has any right to. Florence runs into the dairy lane in the middle and you head to the far right.

This is the section for kitchen and gardening stuff you were talking about earlier. On one side are rows of knives, frying pans, boxed electrical machines and other goods any good housewife would appreciate. The other side has stuff like bleach, weed killer, seeds and fertilizer. There’s even some cheap nature charms on sale. For some reason, this aisle leads into another aisle containing cooking oils and sauces.

You glance at the prices. Wow, today’s a special sale day. Considering the expiry date on some of these things, they must be desperate to get rid of them. You look down the end and see a sign pointing to an emergency exit. Shouts and the sounds of overturning tables ring the air. Your little sister is part of them. Footsteps pound like hammers. Yeah, they’re definitely coming this way.

>Set a trap with the oils.

You dash out from aisle with your pistol drawn. With luck, there won’t be too many people around here to start screaming, like that one time back in the countryside. You see Abe charging towards you, grabbing at something on his back. Upon closer inspection, it’s Shesmur. The blood spirit leaps off his back and into Airi’s hands. There’s a flash of crimson light and now there’s a blade and a couple of throwing knives.

Florence steps out, the cold at her fingertips. She sees you and smirks. Abe does the same, except his is one of total shock. You see him skid, his knees bent slightly. You’re not risking any chances here. You force out the mana inside the mediocre magic circuits of yours and apply it to the bullet in your Beretta’s chamber. Deep within the mechanisms, it glows a silvery-purple, the color of magic negation.

Breathing in, you aim and squeeze the trigger.

A loud bang. There’s the familiar scent of gunfire, acrid of sour. A cylinder of plastic hurtles through the air, aimed directly at Abe’s chest. At the last moment, he does that vanishing trick again. You hear the air displace to the sides. Then, a cry of pain.

Abe is several feet in front of you, clutching his shoulder. A hint of blood leaks from a hole in his torn coat. The plastic bullet falls and clinks on the ground. He looks up and glares at you, angry for the first time. You see that, and something else. A flicker of white light, taking the form of multiple locked hexagons near his wound.

“A shield.” Akasha-Alea murmurs, “It must protect against blunt damage, which includes plastic bullets. It seems to be fairly strong, albeit small in size. The anit-mana properties of your bullet bypassed some of the protection, judging from his pain. His left arm won’t be effective for a while.”

Abe whips his head around. You follow his gaze and see a trail of ice headed towards him. One on the ground, then Florence flicks her wrist and summons icicles from the vapour in the air. They fling themselves towards Abe’s back. He curses and vanishes several metres in front of you. You whirl around and fire again. He dodges to the side, so it’s a miss. He realizes too late. An icicle sinks into his side, drawing blood.

Again, he doesn’t scream. He hisses and vanishes again. He reappears in front of the emergency exit, flings it open and runs into the open air.

“Dammit,” You scowl, “Even that wasn’t enough?” Still, you think to yourself, he’s damaged. Whatever technique he’s using must burn up some mana, more so if it’s used consecutively. Maybe this chase will be over sooner than you think.

“Shesmur’s got his scent, guys!” Airi shouts, “Follow me!”

You all rush out the emergency exit because none of you want to deal with the mess you caused.

In the coming days, a news station would report on the vandalism caused by adolescent magi, in which the entire fruit section was demolished, half a dozen fish tanks were overturned, several meat counters found themselves with broken screens and last but not least a entire shelf of baking goods was overturned. The damage would add up to tens of thousands of yen, resulting the supermarket suspending its services for a week.

The names and faces would be obscured and no consequences would be had, but everyone in True Hearts would put two and two together and figure out it was you and your sister; thus, giving them even more reason to avoid you.

The next stages of chase taks you past traffic lights, through the breadths of parks and dusty crevices in between high-rise buildings. You feel as if you have crossed the entirety of Roppongi today. The whole affair is made all the more arduous and elongated by your target, who despite his wounds has only slowed down a fraction. He seems to just slip out of your fingers when you get near, using that irritating vanishing technique when you get near.

The sun creeps towards the top of the sky and the streets become narrower and filthier. Clean concrete paths give way to cracked tiles and browning walls. The scent of mold fills the air. The magic in this place hints of rot and filth, types that only the seedier denizens of both worlds can appreciate. Florence is now more out of place than ever—not that she really fit into the average crowd in the first place.

Abe limps into the courtyard of a construction site. It’s abandoned, a ghostly husk of a mighty apartment building. There’s a metal warning sign in front. The yellow paint is peeling and there’s rust flaking from it. He stands in the middle of the site, panting.

He gives a tired but cocky smile as you and the two girls rush in, weapons drawn.

“Man, you three just don’t give up, huh?” He breathes, wincing.

>“Guess you don’t know much about us.”

Buckshot explodes out of the barrel. Abe dodges by vanishing to the right, but it’s not enough. He moans as a hefty chunk of the pellets slam into him and force him down on the knee. A hexagonal shield sparks, fizzes and fades. You pump your shotgun, relishing the satisfying click it makes, and stare down the sights at him.

“Negotiations broke down already?” Abe groans, climbing to his feet, his legs trembling. Hell’s bells, how much ammunition do you need to spend to put this guy into the dirt? “You’ve got a real trigger finger, kid. Okay, no more playing around. Come out, guys!”

Twin figures leap out from the shadows, their magic signatures flaring. They hurl something round and glowing in the air. You curse and leap out of the way. Airi and Florence do the same, kicking off the ground and rushing to safety. The objects bounce on the concrete once and explode, sending smoke and heat everywhere. They force you to scatter further. Airi and Florence disappear behind a grey haze.

“Shit, are you guys alright…” You mumble, coughing with stinging eyes. You wipe them. It makes them worse and your mentor reprimands you. Then she bolts up, alert. Someone is behind you. You understand this too late. There’s a wooden bat swinging down towards your head, a spike shoved straight through the middle.

“Get away from my brother!” A holler, burning with anger. A set of throwing knives fly in your direction. You duck and your assailant jumps backward. The knives strike against a wall covered in tattered posters and promptly explode.

“Missed…” Your assailant growls. It’s a thin man, dressed in a hoodie and jeans. He fingers with a charm around his neck, hissing. It glows dark with magic. You’re quick to place some distance between him. He spits on the ground and points the bat towards you. “Come on, let’s go.”

There’s something about his tone that you don’t like. You take a step forward with your shotgun primed and ready, only to find that Airi is already in front. “I’ll take care of this, onii-chan.” She says, her voice intense, “Go and get Abe!”

“Yes, you really should, Keiichi.” Florence calls out from behind. She’s staring down her opponent, a round and wide man dressed similarly to his companion. There’s nothing in her posture to suggest fear, despite facing a fellow magus who is hefting an ornate looking sword and has summoned a horde of spirit familiars. “I believe he ran up that building. Do try and apprehend him before he slips from our fingers.”

She points to the entrance of the abandoned apartment, where a dusty staircase lies. What, is she giving you orders now? You were going to do that in the first place. Without saying a word, you switch out your shotgun for your pistol and run towards the staircase.

“You have made a mistake.”

“What? How?”

“You forgot to double tap. It would have incapacitated him. Now, you are walking into his trap.”

“…shit.”

“Yes, I believe that would describe your performance back there.”

“He had shields, though.”

“And you have measures of bypassing those. Do not try to excuse yourself. This is nothing but your own shortcomings.”

“Alright, alright I get it. I'm sorry, Akasha-Alea.”

"Apologies on the battlefield are useless. Do you remember what I taught you about underestimating wounded opponents? I think I will have you review them in our next training session.”

You follow the trail of blood, as faint as it may be. You take the steps two and three at the time and the stairs vanish past you. Your mentor expresses her appreciation for the decent exercise. That’s really not the point, you wish you could tell her.

You reach the fourth floor. You only know this because of the large number painted on the stairwell, faded by the curse of time. It’s quiet here, as if not to disturb the layer of dust that coats absolutely everything, including your tracksuit. Then, you hear gasps and snorts coming from the south. Some are of pain, but others are of ecstasy. All of them belong to a familiar target. You lift your pistol and make your way there.

You step into the frame of a doorway. Abe is standing tall in the space where an ordinary apartment should be.

“About time you got here.” He grins. He sounds confident, a far cry from what he was before. “Ready?”

You squint at him. There’s a hint of red at the sides of his eyeballs. They’re glazed too. There’s life in his voice, but his body twitches with irregularity, as if fatigue and energy have mixed themselves together and swallowed down his gullet. You then spy a plastic pocket on the ground, white powder in the corner, and a plastic crate behind him. It all clicks together.

“Drugs?” You say, “Seriously?”

“You’re good at this, aren’t you?” Abe laughs and reaches into his coat. He draws a switchblade and flicks out the blade. He leers at you. “Yeah, so what? My life, my choices.”

“Is this what you tried to break up your gang for?” You ask and he chuckles.

“Nah, this is something I liked to do on the side. But man, you and that sister of yours are inquisitive as hell. There’s a limit to how much high school kids should know.”

“So you don’t deny it, then?” You growl.

“Hmmm, I dunno.” Abe smirks, “Why don’t you think about it for a while?”

You exchange your pistol for your shotgun. This time, you’re not taking any chances. You glare at him. “Last chance. Surrender and I won’t fill you with holes.”

“Scary, scary…” He utters. “I don’t think a kid like you should be carrying something so scary. Really though, I was intending to fight you. That’s why I stopped here.”

His shrugs off his coat and top hat, flinging them to the side. “Hey kid, you know that shadow thief you caught a week back?”

“What about him?”

“Do you remember his name?”

“No.”

He sighs. “As expected of a private school brat. Well, his name was Hiro Isin. My name is Abe Isin, by the way.” He looks into your eyes and you see something dangerous flash in his eyes, like lightning amidst a storm. “You got my cousin in jail, you little shit.”

You squeeze the trigger and sent buckshot flying outwards. Abe flashes forward, rubber pellets bouncing off his shield. This time, they only slow him for an instant. He’s in front of you and his switchblade is coming down. You shove your shotgun outwards. Metal and metal strike together and that’s only the start…

“Are you with Abe?” Airi asks, glaring at the thin man in front of her.

“Not answering that.” The thin man replies, shrugging. Airi runs, her sword swinging in an arc. He dodges to the side, then then rips the charm from his neck. A small thing, made from fragmented bone tied together with string. It’s bloodstained, Airi realizes, and coated in raw mana. Wisps of purple smoke gather around it. He holds out the bone charm in front of him and the miasma grows stronger. Hazy lights flash from within the cloud until a spirit forms—a bear of the same color, standing proud on two feet, eyes flashing a hungry yellow and toxins radiating from every inch of fur.

It all happens in a few seconds.

“No hard feelings, girl.” The thin man says, hands in his pocket. He retreats back. “Just business.”

In response, Airi brings up her sword, settles in a stance, her expression grim. The bear roars and slashes with a thick paw. She counters with the blade, metal clashing against the special mana all spirits are made off, causing the air to ripple…

Florence Rutherford caresses her chin with a delicate hand. She contemplates. She doesn’t stop smiling. She hums her school anthem and it’s in tune. This, predictably, irritates the thug in front of her.

“What the hell are you standing there for?” He shouts. His wolf minions howl in unison.

“Oh, I am just wondering something.” Florence admits. “Those are some nice familiars you have. I’m sure their fangs are very poisonous.”

“Are you going to fight me or not?” The thug yells.

“Yes, yes, in a minute.” Florence responds, sounding a little irritated. “I am trying to think of a suitable handicap for you.”

Silence. “A what?” The thug growls.

“That’s odd. I don’t believe I stuttered.” Florence muses to herself, looking troubled. “Do you perhaps have hearing problems?”

“You…you…”

“Now then, what I should offer you? One hand behind my back? Not use my rapier? Only use my rapier? Perhaps I shouldn’t use my Ultimate…no, I wouldn’t have used it regardless of a handicap. How troubling…”

Something snaps in the thug’s mind. He screams and shoves his finger outwards. The wolf familiars howl again and stampede forward. Florence sighs dramatically, as if her world is a stage and this is all part of her latest performance. Then a nasty smirk crosses her beautiful features, quick as lightning. She draws her rapier, snaps her fingers and sends a hail of icicles raining down on the attacking horde...

“If I slit your throat kid, remember you deserved it!”

‘He’s like a hummingbird’, is your first, strange thought. A pestilent hummingbird, with blades on the wings and a streak for sadistic violence. In other words, the kind of person you despise. You squeeze the trigger and eject buckshot in his direction. Only a few pellets strike against his torso before he’s gone, re-appearing beside you with the switchblade aimed at your vitals. You attempt to smash him with the butt of your shotgun, he’s back over on the opposite end of the room, giggling that mocking laugh.

This process repeats itself half a dozen times. Not that you are keeping count; it all gets lost in the haze of combat, a mist of blood, sweat and burning magic circuits.

“Hey, are you having fun? Is this fun for you?” There’s another thing you’ve discovered about Abe, other than the fact that you want to strangle him. Whatever drugs he’s taken, they’ve boosted his ability to run his mouth like a treadmill. “You know what was cool at first? Being in a biker gang!”

A shot, a swipe, a curse and a bark of laughter.

“I loved the motorcyles, the thrill of the race, but then I realized most of my ‘mates’ there were complete morons. Always content to stay in their little corners, never striving for something greater. The more I thought about it, the less I liked them. So I decided to quit!”

“And you didn’t bring this up with your boss?” You grunt, pumping your shotgun again and aiming. He disappears.

“You think I didn’t try to leave the gang? I did! I said to Doppo several times, ‘Hey boss, I don’t think I’m cut out for this.’ But the idiot wouldn’t let me leave. He said he needed me in that pathetic angry way of his. He knew that without my smarts, he would start to lose control over his gang. It was so annoying!”

He’s in your face again, the sunlight gleaming off the flat side of the switchblade This time, you react fast. Your shotgun sinks into the tip of his nose and he howls. He retreats backward, blood dripping from the organ. It’s squashed, but less so than you would have liked. He must have done the vanish the instant your shotgun hit him.

Then he’s back up again, dashing and dicing through the throbbing agony. Fast like a hawk and relentless like a cornered rat.

“You curious about what I did?” He grins.

“You really think you can beat me?” You echo your thoughts.

“Mate, I feel invincible!” He lunges forward. The blade grazes your tracksuit, tearing it. No damage, but you are forced back.

"You know what I did? I just staged some incidents here and there. Made the Red Skull Rockers think the Brave Ravens had beef with them and vice versa. Half the time I thought they wouldn’t fall for it, but they did. Probably exchanged all that brain for muscle as kids! Now they're running around like rats, just like you, kid!”

He kicks you and you are forced out the hallway, towards the stairwell. You hear him chuckle. It soon breaks into an animalistic howl of sheer mirth.

It's is impressive in a vile, mad way. As if you needed another reminder that injecting toxins into your bloodstream is a bad idea.

“He talks too much. His supplements will run out eventually. Keep attacking, but don’t be afraid to use your environment to your advantage.”

He’s still inside the shell of the apartment while you are not. What you have to do is obvious. You briefly consider wearing your gas mask. No, that might not be a good idea. It’ll restrict your peripheral vision and in a fight where reaction is king it could be disastrous.

Besides, it’s not as if Akasha-Alea hasn’t taught you to resist the effects of tear gas. So you take out your grenade launcher, aim and fire twice. The mini-grenades power through the entrance-way, bounce of the wall and ricochet into the room. Plumes of acidic, white smoke burst from within. Your eyes begin to water at the mere sight.

“What the fuck!” Abe screams. He’s soon drowned out by a myriad of painful coughs and weeps. You grin with satisfaction and move back. You watch as he stumbles out of the toxic fog, clawing at his bloodshot eyes and snot dripping out of his damaged nose.

“You motherfucker!” He yells. There’s something to be said about how looks can kill. There’s also something to be said about how you’ve seen worse on your sister. This is not the time to be thinking about such matters. You switch out the grenade launcher for your shotgun and fire off the remaining shots. Three of them, in fact, each one charged with anti-mana aura. They sink into his torso, sending him tumbling backwards. On the last one, his shield fizzles and cracks into pieces.

“You want to give up now?” You shout. “I really think it sounds like a good idea!”

Blood drips from a sliced lip. He grips the floor with his hands, getting on all fours. He stares up at you, calm yet dark with hatred. Then the energy inside of him explodes free and he’s rushing at you, his switchblade held out.

He’s doing his Ultimate Skill. There’s no doubt about it. The sudden influx of mana in the surroundings, the way he concentrated before rushing and the incredible speed he’s barreling towards you with. But you are a boy who has been trained to dodge all manners of projectiles. Airi was faster, Florence was faster and heck, even Michiko’s shouts were faster.

He’s nothing compared to your perception.

You sidestep out of the way, causing him to ram into the edge of the wall. He unsticks himself from it, his head swimming. You lash out with your boot and it connects with his shin. He stumbles. You draw your pistol and fire.

The plastic bullet sinks into his chest and he tumbles backwards. Right down the stairs. He’s bouncing down so many stone steps now like a loose soccer ball. Somebody must have warned him this might happen, but he didn’t listen. These are his consequences: severe pain and several cracked bones. Some of them might even be broken.

Well, that does it. There’s no way he’s getting back up from—

“Heh…heh…damn you, you piece of shit…”

Goddammit.

You walk down the steps to where Abe is. He’s leaning against the wall, beneath a hole in the wall presumably for windows. His switchblade is away to the side. You stamp on it with your boot and slide it away. His arm goes limp.

“You suck,” You remark.

“Fuck you.”

“Shouldn’t have taken drugs.” You say. “Why are people like you so retarded?”

“Hey, can I ask something?” Abe goes, coughing. “Why are you here? What does a private school brat like you serve to gain by sticking his nose into these affairs? Shouldn’t you spending your time cramming for exams or picking up chicks, instead of caring out a spat between biker gangs and getting your rich little souls all dirtied up in the underground’s muck?”

You shrug your shoulders. “You kidnapped my friends and tried to hold them for ransom. I guess I just don’t like you.”

“What? Those guys? It was just a joke. I was only going to hold them out of the way, keep you distracted…”

You scowl. “You’re damn lucky I’m not using my metal bullets.”

Abe gives you a bitter smile. “As if a kid like you could use them.” He snorts.

He’s right, but you’re not going to give him the satisfaction. You hold up your pistol, the barrel staring down at his torso. “Anything you want to get off your chest?”

He retches up spittle and blood. “I have friends, you know. They’ll come for me. I hope you’re prepared.”

“Oh yeah,” You say, frowning. “Your friends. I almost forgot about those. Wonder what Doppo’s gonna do once he finds out you tried to break his gang from the inside. From what I've heard he's a super violent guy. Maybe he'll break your legs.”

Abe's smile vanishes. “Go to hell, kid.” he spits.

“See you there first.” You say and bring your pistol crashing down onto his forehead. A smack, his body shudders and then he’s unconscious like a baby.

Victory is yours.

“I still cannot believe you forgot to do a double tap.”

“You are never going to shut up about that, are you?”

“Considering that it was one of the first concepts I taught to you about combat, I don’t believe I will stop reminding you for quite some time.”

“Hey, kid.”

“What?”

“Use your Ultimate. I want to see it.”

“Sorry, but I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because my partner would get mad at me. He’s prideful. He doesn’t want it to be used on you.”

“…your funeral, kid. Get her.”

A roar, a swipe, the cracking of the earth. There’s the fine movements of a young girl as she rolls out of the way. A mouth opens and fires a blast of energy. It hits the girl dead-on. She blocks with her sword, but the force is enough to knock her off her feet and send her tumbling.

“Urgh…”

“Told you so, kid.”

“It’s not end. When your partner opened his mouth, I threw something in there.”

“…what?”

“Yep, that’s right. Onii-chan suggested it to me a while ago. He said I could use my blood bags as weapons, so I did!”

“I’m sorry, spirit. Detonate!”

A tremendous explosion. Blobs of spirit body fly in all directions. The girl lunges forward and slams the hilt of her sword onto the thug’s forehead. A sharp crack rings out and he collapses in a heap.

“That’s my opponent down. I hope you’re okay, onii-chan…”

“It seems that Keiichi has prevailed. As expected of him.”

“…”

“That Abe fellow made a mistake, trying to face him one-on-one. He’s simply not the type of magus to defeat Keiichi. For one, he underestimated his persistence.”

“…”

“The second would be not recognizing his ability to cause chaos. As for the third, he ran away instead of facing Keiichi head on.”

“…”

“The same applies to his sister as well.”

“…”

“Even when weakened from their stay in hospital, they are a force to be reckoned with. How will their tasks force them to grow?. I anticipate the day we meet in the Festival of Magic.”

“…”

“Needless to say, I quite enjoyed the time we spent together. It was a nice period of relaxation from my usual every day schedule. The Hirayama siblings are truly interesting individuals. It’s always entertaining to see how they react to things.”

“…”

“Oh, I do beg your pardon. Your mouth is still covered in ice. I should unfreeze it. However, this begs the question: do you deserve to speak?”

“…!”

“Let me consider your performance. You spouted vulgarities at me, as if words alone would stop me. You sent your pack of familiars charging forward without much strategy. You failed to properly utilize their poison magic in favour of physical attacks, which they were unsuited for. You created more even as they proved ineffective against my ice. Your swordplay was inadequate. You could not even graze me.”

“…!!!!”

“After reviewing, I believe that no, I will not unfreeze your mouth. I do not think I wish to hear any more of your vulgarities, so do stay like that for a while. You will only have to remain there until the police arrive.”

Hello there! It’s me again, Makoto Kushikawa, your friendly neighborhood student council president. Did you guys miss me? If you say no, I’ll understand. I’ll mull it over in the shower, but it’s totally okay to say that you didn’t.

Today is similar as last time; I’ll be providing you all a brief rundown of what happened after the Hirayama Siblings and Florence Rutherford beat Abe Isin in Roppongi. Time is limited so I’ll try and keep this brief. I still have a habit of rambling on so maybe you should bring a drink? Anyway, here I go.

After Abe was defeated by Keiichi and his minions by Airi and Florence, they interrogated him basically using the same methods they used towards the kidnappers. At least, that’s what Keiichi told me. He also said that Florence 'took a page out of Airi’s book with her ice and her rapier. I don’t really know what it means, but it worked against Isin’s minions. They were singing their stomachs within minutes. Abe held out a bit longer, but Florence and Keiichi got to him in the end. They recorded the conversation with their phones and uploaded it online.

The two gang leaders, Kata and Doppo, received the recordings and watched them. Keiichi and Airi only got a second-hand understanding of their reactions, so this might not be entirely accurate. Apparently, Kata nodded and accepted the situation, whereas Doppo flew into a rage, wrecked half his base and screamed for Abe’s head. Unfortunately, Abe Isin was in police custody at that point. Keiichi had also found a packet of mysterious white powder in the guy’s trousers while shaking him down for change. It turned out to be Angel Dust—a highly illegal substance for enhancing magical and physical abilities. Don’t do drugs, kids!

Since both gang leaders realized they had been played, they decided to meet at a restaurant and formed a truce. Megumi, Florence’s underclasswoman, and Takiji, the second-in-command of the Red Skull Rockers, took the opportunity to reveal their relationship. That’s what Airi said. She also added they only did so after much persuading from her and her brother. As for the actual meeting itself…

“Took you long enough. Congratulations, bro.” Kata said, grinning and clapping. His fellow gang members did the same, filling their booth with sharp noises. Doppo wasn’t as receptive.

“What? What the flipping fuck!” He screamed, slamming his palms on the table, “When the shit did this happen?”

“A month ago?” Keiichi said. “Weren’t you listening?”

“Why the hell does this blonde fucker get to kiss my little sister! When the fuck did I ever offer my consent? This is not fucking happening, you sons of—”

“Oh, shut the hell up.” Keiichi growled, “You weren’t even aware that she was acting weird. Also, you’re scaring the rest of the customers.”

You’d think it would be a bad idea to talk back to a man who’s already notorious for being in prison for violence…and you’d be right. I certainly wouldn’t be able to do it. Somehow, Keiichi made Doppo back down. Maybe it was the fact that he made Doppo realize he had already committed loads of mistakes prior to this. Maybe it was the glare or maybe it was the shotgun in his hands.

…I don’t actually know if Keiichi had a shotgun in his hands. I wasn’t there. It sounds like something he would do in a private booth, though! Please stop looking at me like that!

I get the impression that the government wanted the gangs out of the picture for good. They sounded displeased in that neutral, concealed way politicians do when I contacted them. Too bad. It’s not their fault they didn’t make the requirements clear. Maybe they should have reached out to Abe Isin, considering that his intentions were to dismantle the two gangs.

Anyway, the Red Skull Rockers and the Brave Ravens are at peace. They still shoplift, loiter and cause chaos like usual, but it’s a controlled chaos. No-one likes it, but we all expect it to be there. It’s like having insects beneath your house.

Abe Isin is still in custody. He’ll go to trial for drug use. I expect he'll get five or six years in jail. The ironic part is that he’s safer there, far away from the two gangs who want to 'rip off his nutsack and feed it to the dogs' (as Keiichi so eloquently put it).

Michiko Tsukiwaki and Hideki Nishio arrived home safely. They are continuing their school life as usual. I heard from Keiichi that Michiko’s parents started prohibiting her from going out at night.

“I can’t believe they did that! It wasn’t my fault I got kidnapped!”

“They’re worried about you, duh. Did you tell them I rescued you?”

“I did, but they still did it! Urgh, Dad can be so spineless sometimes. Doesn’t he know that half of Shibuya’s entertainment comes out at night?”

“It’s not going to stop you at all, isn’t it?”

“Not if I can help it. I’m not some fragile china doll to be locked up in a box. I can fully take care of myself.”

“Good luck, then.”

“…you wouldn’t mind explaining it to my parents, Keiichi?”

“No, do it yourself.”

Hideki was happy to have been placed in such an ‘exciting’ situation and promptly wrote a report about his experiences. It’s due to be published in the school newspaper. I’ll have to look over it at lunch.

As for Florence Rutherford? Her assistance was unexpected, but not unwelcome. I look forward to True Heart’s matchups against Stonewolf’s in three months’ time.

“I guess that’s it.”

“Yes, it seems so. Thank you for the help in uncovering Megumi’s secret. There is much for me to do at Stonewolf, so I will be taking my leave now..”

“See you, Florence.”

“The rest of the tasks are up to you and your sister. I wish you both all the best of luck. Keep your daily lives entertaining for me.”

“…god, and here I thought you were going to see me off like a normal person…”

"My my, you need to sharpen your expectations, Keiichi Hirayama."

"Please don't start this again, Rutherford."

Keiichi needs to calm himself around her, but then again that could be said for a lot of people he meets.

As for my thoughts? This task took a lot longer than I expected. We're a little off schedule, but the siblings still have two and a half months left. That should be enough to get the other seven tasks done, assuming the Ministry of Education isn’t in a foul mood and gives them something super ultra difficult to do.

I also thought it was amazing how the siblings avoided direct violence against the gangs. Guess that’s a difference between me and them. When I saw the task requirements, I imagined myself bulldozing my way through the Red Skull Rockers and delivering the results to the government.

Not that I could do that in real life. I’m a magus like the rest of True Heart’s students, but I’m not particularly strong. Please don’t try and fight me. Seriously, don’t! I get too much invitations as it is! I only became the student council president because of my bureaucratic skills!

Anyway, that’s all for now! See you later!

So you guys want to give Keiichi a day off? Yeah, he deserves it for going through this clusterfuck of a task. It'll be in the next thread, seeing as I'm running out of time today.

Speaking of clusterfucks, I can't shake the feeling that I'm screwing up on multiple aspects of this quest. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I know there's room for improvement here. If there's anything you guys particularly like or dislike, such as characterization, plot, setpieces, mechanics or more, please tell me! Seriously, I want to make this quest as best as I can. I really want the feedback!

I think today's start time worked well. So from now on, Academy Tournament Orgnanization Quest will run on Saturdays, 9:00 pm UTC start. Thus, the next thread will be on the 19th of November. Hope to see all of you there!

Thanks for running, Thorn.

You mention that you needed to rewrite your posts a few times now, maybe you might be overthinking it?

There is a lot of descriptive world building text going on, but sometimes it's better for the flow to cut some of it out until it's needed.
>>
>>821714
I feel like so far it's been the first 3 episodes of an anime - the first 3 episodes that introduce the premise, world, characters and help ease in the viewer before episode 4 kicks off the actual plot.

And being stuck in the first 3 episodes it just feels like, what is our overall goal? Who's the main villain? What's the actual plot? Why are we still stuck in the introduction?
>>
>>821714
The quest is pretty fun but I feel like there are a few things holding it back from being truly great.

A. Either make our combat encounters more difficult or make the combat a little more complex. Your writing is top tier as always but something about the fights in this quest leave me wanting for something more. Both times we got to the boss of the chapter the struggle usually felt one sided. We dont need to really plan our actions, just roll and hope for the best, and while the best doesn't always come the odds are still so stacked in our favor it makes the combat feel dull. A bit more strategy can go a long way, make the victories feel won instead of inevitable.

B. The actual missons we are being sent on aren't very interesting in my humble opinion. They aren't very memorable so while i always leave the quest satisfied thats because i want to see more of the characters. Maybe we can do more involving the spirit world, or anti Magi hate groups or something. Since the focus of this quest isn't the daily lives of super-powered teens like in Persona 2120, I'd like to see us encounter things unique to this setting. I could fight street gangs anywhere but dealing with things like how the spirit world influences the natrual world is something that only this setting can provide.
>>
>>821714
You're really wordy. The descriptions are nice, but I'm pretty sure you can cut some stuff out and it'll still be the same.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate it.

>And hell, how much of this stuff do you pre-write anyway? There's some ridiculous amount of text coming out in a short amount of time.

I write every day between threads. I try and do the OP first, then move onto thread planning, general planning and snippets. Depending on how long the OP is (like Thread 3's), I can spend the entire week writing and editing the OP. I've considered not doing that any more, because it takes away time I could spend writing other stuff and you guys probably don't enjoy the idea of reading massive text dumps.

Some of the stuff I write beforehand are parts of setpieces, like Airi's little fight and Abe's deranged speech. Note that I only do this if I think there's a high chance of them being used. Makoto's speech was pretty much written beforehand since it's supposed to happen at the end of every task. It was only edited slightly today to fit the events that transpired. (main additions being the exchanges with Keiichi and Michiko / Florence).

Despite that, a lot of the time stuff is thrown out and I have to make stuff up on the fly. I don't really mind, since I can reuse them later. This counts for Makoto's speech; if very different events occured, I would have thrown out the old speech and wrote a new one from scratch, no matter how long it took.
