OP Has Problems Edition.
Welcome to Wake Up Naked In A Field With A Rock. Last thread, much fun was had. We were introduced to a post apocalyptic world, populated with people trying to carve out their meager survival amongst wild animals, ravenous cannibals, radiation, and corpse merchants. A strange power, some say, a curse, holds the people of the land hostage, where death is not the end, and people wake up, naked, in a field, with a rock, aware of the final moments of their past lives. Our players continue to fight for their survival and morality in a cut throat world, rife with insecurity, mistrust, and fear.
>Welcome to the next installment.

-----

We are presently at player capacity. However, every now and then, I do accept a new player.
>NEW PLAYERS!
>>Use name as tripcode
>>10 HP @ lvl1
>>Choose an occupation for skill bonuses
>>Customize your rock

-----
>>Mechanics Primer
If your HP is reduced to 0, you fall unconscious. If you are alone, you are assumed dead, and wake up the following sunrise without your items, either in the field, or in your bedroll. However, there are ways to inflict more permanent damage upon players.
>>Skill Checks
>>Flat Check
Roll20 and beat a target number to succeed
>>Opposing Checks
Two players roll against each other. The higher number determines the winner. Combat runs on opposing checks.
>>Anything else?
If you leave the game session and you arent dead, your character falls unconscious. If you aren't present for a session, you are assumed to be sleeping. People can do things to you while you are asleep. Be careful...

You reach the northbound road. In the distance, you see a small gas station. It has a convenience store and an attached auto shop. A couple derelict cars sit in the lot. A large semi truck has turned over in the middle of the road outside. There's also a mile marker sign. It says 4 miles to the next city, however, the name is too faded for you to decipher it.

You take the ramp onto the interstate. Cars sit there, engines off, stuck in eternal gridlock. You can hear in the distance, gunshots, and you see a plume or smoke rising from a building.

You have a birds eyes view of the warehouse district and the railyard. Old train engines sit in the sun, strings of train cars lay motionless, and a large tower overlooking it all.

Many of the warehouses have been barricaded off. It's likely people are living in them.

It looks like someone has been camping here, too. A small fire pit has been dug out in the middle of the barn, and a sleeping bag and a backpack lay there stretched out.

One of the people with you, you remember his name being Rat, produces a little bit of rope from his backpack. You tie Cyclops up, and then start to investigate the scene.

"Hey, Patrick," Rat mumbles, "we should probably take steps to secure this room. We should pile all the weapons elsewhere, and barricade the backdoor so if they do get free, they can't leave. Also, we should tie them to something, just in case Jaws here gets any bright ideas about Cyclops."

Okay, so time to discuss with the others on what we know what happened so far, especially the infection. Include the two infectees if possible. A shame the first one is dead.
"So what from what we can tell, the initial symptoms of infection are similar to cannibalism and stimulant poisonings and overdoses."

"In addition, the infection seems to spread by contact with infected materials or fluids, from what I can imagine, mainly blood from what the two infectees said earlier. So this seems like a bloodborne, communicable infection. It apparently can survive for extended periods time of the host, if the age of the corpses are anything to go by.
“I'm not sure what this virus can survive in, but blood seems like a safe bet."

“In addition, it seems like it requires living hosts, otherwise we’d see the walking dead already. So they’re not zombies from what I can tell, and are far too intelligent while infected to simply be undead.”

"I'm not sure what it takes to get infected, but open wounds seems sure. What did the other infectees do that got them infected, what did the pathogen get inside?"
Try to question the infectees on what happened earlier in more detail, and what they got into contact with.

Poopfist looks around at the destruction and smiles... Poor fools. He wasn't one of their number, and didn't plan to be anytime soon. Signs pointed this way and that, offices or labs. It took him no time at all to decide that much more fun could be had in a laboratory than in a stinky old office... Poopfist headed towards the lab, dragging his knife along the decomposing walls as he strolled. Danger was an idea that had fled, his head was so full of possibility now!

>You begin to interrogate the first infected.
Were the two of them together? When did they go into the locked rooms, what rooms did they go to?
When did they first start displaying symptoms, how close were they to infected material or fluids? How much medical gear were they wearing, if any?

What items did they loot, did they learn anything? Do they have any intel we can use for subsequent expeditions?
What did they touch after they went into the infected rooms?

Was anything unusual while they were there? How well did the two of them know each other?
Did they plan the escape? When did they start escaping? What moved them to start escaping?

"We walked into the pharmacy together. We stayed together. We tried to get deep into the pharmacy store room, but it was chained shut, so we busted the lock. I started feeling sick when we were walking back... Maybe an hour after we went past the barricades. We didn't touch anything.. there were corpses everywhere though and the stench of death was heavy on the air. We weren't wearing any medical gear.

We managed to get antibiotics and pain killers. Didn't manage to find anything else of value, didn't really find anything too important... We mostly just handled medicines and tried to keep our distance from the corpses, but the other guy slipped on some blood and I helped him up. I think that's where we came into contact with infected material.

Can't think of anything too unusual, except that the hospital was full of corpses. A lot of them were missing limbs, or half eaten. We knew each other well... We've been friends for months. Hell, he was the first person I met in the field. We didn't plan the escape, but when the chaos started to erupt, it seemed like the thing to do. I don't know why, I just... I didn't trust anyone at the time."

You shout down your query from the interstate, asking if the man had seen any hardware stores in the area.

"Yeah, but you gotta go deeper into town for it, and I'll tell you right now, not everyone is as friendly as I am. Follow the interstate to the next offramp. You'll see a large shopping plaza. A lot of it has been picked clean, but there's a hardware store there. Be careful, huh? There's cannibals and butchers about."

Alrigh' now that things are secured, I gotta find some kinda supplies. Need to start findin' some people ta help me, too. I sigh. Looks like ma best bet would be another town or some such. >I don't know why, I just... I didn't trust anyone at the time."
"Thanks for being honest with us. It could simply being the virus's symptoms."
"To confirm, we aren't going to anything inhumane with you, or keep you here any longer than necessary than to keep you from accidentally infecting others. As soon we can, we'll get you two that cure, I'm sure of it."

"When did you leave the locked rooms? When did Cyclops call you to regroup?"
After this, ask Cyclops the same questions to confirm the timeline.

On the line of thought of timelines, it makes me wonder how time in Purgatory works and what year it is. I'll go ask the others what year it is, what day it is, and when they all entered Purgatory.
What year was it before I entered Purgatory, and was there any significant deviations in the timeline compared to the real world? What about the meta world, the ones that us players are in?

"Any corpses or blood anyone sees around this town, keep healthy distance away from and assume that it's infected."

"We also know that the incubation time is extremely short and can take merely an hour before symptoms show, that's shorter than the even common cold or the flu."

As his common sense returned, he began to move toward the mess to see what he might be able to recover from it.

Patient documentation litters the floor. The files all say the same thing - stimulant psychosis and acute stimulant poisoning. Almost all the files are dated to May, 2013. However, one note catches your eye. It reads like a journal entry.

"The contamination has spread like wildfire. The hospital is no longer safe. I locked myself in the lab, but I have no food or water. I won't last long here. I can hear them out there - the screams of the wounded, and the maniacal laughter of the infected, punctuated with the sounds of ripping flesh and breaking bones. It's gotten out of hand now. Poopfist considers burning the hospital to smoke out whoever is hiding inside, but instead decides to seek out the scientist. Perhaps he can offer a cure for whatever ailment seems to have taken hold...
Poopfist slinks through the darkness, keeping his ears perked up for the sound of any movement. If he did run into the infected, perhaps he should keep his canteen handy for a little boost? He pauses briefly and silently swaps the canteen for the knife... With his ragejuice in the left hand, and a bludgeon in the right he was ready to inquire about a cure in the most violent way possible. Poopfist creeps slowly around the remaining laboratory rooms, trying find an open door and uncover the hidden doctor.

As he moves the knife from the backpack, it brushes against the flint and strikes a couple of small sparks... Almost as if speaking to him. He holds the flint up and holds it in his left hand. Perhaps this place should burn...

First he needed to find some medical supplies. Giving the dead doctor a swift kick to the head, Poopfist spins around and storms down the hall. Breaking doorknobs off with the crowbar he searched for supplies to make up for the doctor's failure.

Okay, now to check to see what kind of a job I was doing.

Are the others wearing medical or biohazard gear? Have them look in the janitorial supply closet or auto shop's equipment room. The supply closet likely has biohazard gloves, masks, and jumpsuits for dealing with spills and stuff. The auto shop’s equipment room probably has a respirator, helmets, and other gear used to safely work with fluids and machinery.

I'll go read the medical encyclopedia on how to prevent infection, how to diagnose one's health and symptoms.

Hm. Well that settles most of our intel so far and how to keep the infected in check.
Inform the others on our current intel.

Have the others check to see if there are any microwaves around here and power.

Make signs on all entrances leading the room the infected are stored in, warning them not to go inside because of infected. Include a biohazard sign.

I'm tempted to make the sign say:
DON'T INFECTED
OPEN INSIDE

After that, meet up with the others and form a plan with our intel we gathered with the hospital on what we should aim for. I’m thinking of mostly the lab for vaccine or cure research, and any rooms that would contain hazmat gear.

You make your way from the gas station towards your cave. However, the walk is a quiet and lonesome one. You reach home, and you see Carljack in the antechamber, a fire burning in his completed furnace.

"Anne! You're back! Did you find any tongs or a hammer or something to use as a crucible? I've been collecting ore all day and I think ready to start smelting!"

No worries. Schedules change. Keep your character sheet though, find a safe camp, and if you're ever available know you're free to jump in.

You drive your fire truck up to the burning hospital, and look for a hydrant, but none are readily available. You unwind the hose from the side of the truck, and Rat opens The water valve. A stream of foam shoots out of the hose, and the pressure nearly knocks you on your ass.

Yeah, I just hope I'm not abusing anything.

From what I can tell, it's directly for learning, which is from experience, knowledge, or tutors.
It stems from a liberal arts education, or similar occupations that'd lend itself to the acquisition of knowledge. Or, I guess the Scholar occupations.
It also primarily helps with documents, literacy, or reading in general, which is most of the time spent. It seems to assist in analysis by extension, or investigation.
So mostly a support skill.

>You see no signs, but you do see some bloody footprints on the floor. There may or may not have been a fight.
Hm... Check to see if both sides left any notes around or left any signs before the fight started. Avoid touching the blood, prudence is best.

Personally I think what Patrick has used the most so far or done the most significantly is: +1 Learning, +1 Medicine, and +1 Melee, Search, or Endurance. I'm not sure what the 3rd one would be, since those rolls haven't come as much as the former two.
The upgrades you gave Patrick would make him less squishy compared to everyone else though.

What's the difference between Endurance and Athletics? Is Endurance sort of like constitution or stamina and Athletics is speed and maneuverability?

"Yer gear, righ'? Well, follow me. An' don't be scared o' me. Ya really can't talk, can ya?" I lead him through to the armory, making sure he doesn't look as I punch in the code to unlock it. Once open, I'll grab his stuff, all kept together, and hand it to him with care.

Poopfist shakes his head in response to the question and shrugs. As Poopfist walks with his head low... He feels a bit of humility for what might be the first time in his life. He owed this fellow a great debt, and didn't want to be a burden. He wouldn't stay and weigh this guy down, but he would try his best to repay him before setting off.

As Jippy handed him the gear, he slipped it all back into place. Knife and magnum in coat pockets; then the bat, crowbar, flint, and molotovs into the backpack... Carefully separated by a sleeping bag.

Seeing all of his things again made him feel nice and he gave Jippy one of the quickest smiles possible. Poopfist rose to his feet and clapped his hand to his mouth, dancing a little... The way he saw old Indians do it in John Wayne westerns. He dragged his finger across his throat, and nodded to Jippy... Extending him a bit longer smile, with quite a bit more maliciousness in it.

"Wanna set right to it, eh? Well I don't know where he might be. Last I know of, he had some mebbe allies back a ways near this quarry. No idea if'n he still there, but there were at least four then. Dunno if'n jes you an' I can take em alone, not as we is. So, wanna see what we can dig up? I found a workin' train yesterday." We get set up right, figger this place out... Poopfist looked down at himself, then at Jippy... The fellow was right. Pure rage hadn't been able to overcome a good set of armor. And there was only one of them. Poopfist might've been crazy, but he certainly wasn't stupid.

He acknowledged the statement with a nod, pointing to Jippy's armor and then to the dirty labcoat he was wearing.

But he was in no state to travel, he held up a finger to ask Jippy to wait and pulled the medkit from his backpack to heal whatever he was able to.

I don't want to mess up, really. If I try to help, is there a possibility it could heal incorrectly? I would rather heal myself because nobody but myself would be frusturated at me if I fail.

That's some gallows humor right there.

Thanks for confirming.
>+1 Medicine, +1 Learning, +1, +1 Melee
If I may ask, is it possible to allocate multiple level-up skill points in one skill if appropriate?
If so, then I think +2 Learning and +1 Medicine would be more appropriate for Patrick at this level, reflecting what he did most or most significantly.
