"I'm gonna hang this on my wall! No, wait -- I'm gonna make it into a lamp and put it in my bedroom! No! I'm gonna eat Cocoa Puffs out of it every d--"

You snatch the trophy from Whitney. "It doesn't belong to you. It belongs to the team."

"Like fuck it doesn't belong to me! I won it!"

"You answered one question. One!"

"P'yeah," Whitney chuffs derisively. "The most important question of all. If it wasn't for me, we'd all be going home losers right now."

She hurries ahead of you and twirls around, blocking your path through the hotel's hallway. She holds her index finger and her thumb in the shape of an L on her forehead. She uses the wrong hand; the L is backwards.

"If any single one of us deserves the trophy, it's me," Rose says. "I was the most valuable team member, points-wise."

"Fuck you," you say. "I had better stats in the tournament. I answered 229 questions right and only 12 wrong. Your score was 190 right, 14 wrong. I win - again."

"You were keeping count?" Rose hums.

"I swear to--"

"Anyway, you're off. You only answered 227. And I answered 194. More importantly, my cumulative point total was higher. Ergo, I'm the MVP."

"The only reason your point total was higher is because the score distribution is biased towards math questions--"

"So? If you knew how to fucking count, you wouldn't be behind on points--"

"I swear I will beat you until y--"

"Suckers!" Whitney cries. Only as she's halfway down the hall do you realize she took advantage of your bickering to steal the trophy back from you.

"Get back here, you idiot!" Rose screams. She breaks into a trot and tries to chase her, but it's an embarrassing display. She isn't even a quarter of the way down the hall before Whitney rounds the corner and disappears.

"I blame you for this," you tell Rose.

She stops and steadies herself against the wall with a forearm. "Go to hell," she says, panting lightly. "You let her take it from you."

"Go get packed, you dumb fat cow," you sneer as you pass her by. "...See you on the bus."

You get back to your hotel room a couple minutes later. You figure you'll find Cerise there passed out drunk. She wasn't at the championship match, so where else would she be?

But when you open the door and step inside, she's not there.

"Cerise?" You call, expecting to hear her respond from inside the bathroom, telling you to fuck off.

No response.

You feel the beginnings of a knot in your stomach.

"No, no, no -- I won't! I won't, Alabaster!"

She's serious. Whitney never uses your full name.

You force the slip of paper into her hand. It has Saul's phone number written on it. "Please. This is our future now... if what that lawyer just told you is true, you need to act as fast as possible--"

"I need to be with you! You can't just, just -- go on a suicide mission and expect me to stay

---

The next thing you know, you're on your back, staring at the ceiling of Galatea's apartment. The power flickers. Her generator must be running out of juice.

"--all right?" You hear, as your vision comes back into focus from out of a blurred white thrum. You sit up, rubbing your head. Whitney is kneeling beside you.

"I'm fine..." you say, but even you can hear how groggy your voice is. "What happened?"

"You fell over."

You shake it off. "Did Tyrus's men already leave?"

Her brow furrows. "Yeah... you've been passed out for like 20 minutes, Ally."

You try to stand, but you're still woozy, and you almost fall again. Whitney grabs one of your arms with both of her hands to steady you. She rises now, and helps you the rest of the way up.

"Call Saul," you tell her. "He can help get started on whatever legal bullshit you need... to make sure you get your inheritance..." You weakly try to push past her, but she stops you. "Whitney... I gotta go..." you mumble.

"You just fainted for literally no reason. You're not still thinking of going back there, are you?"

You sit on the couch in the living room to gather your strength again. Only as you sit do you notice Galatea beside you, her knees curled up under her tee in her usual stance. She's staring blankly ahead at nothing.

You glance back up at Whitney. "Alex is in trouble. And it's because of me. I need to be there for him."

Whitney rubs her elbow and can hardly face you.

Despite what she said at first, Alex matters to her too. She understands how you feel.

It's not just Alex, either. You have Sable to worry about. And more than that: the fate of Darkbloom Analytics.

Everything is different now, after that phone call. Darkbloom Analytics isn't a beast you need to slay. It's your girlfriend's chief financial asset.

No - more than just a financial asset. According to his attorney, David Darkbloom had traps and key-man provisions baked into the legal structure of the company. It was his final twist of the knife to Mara from beyond the grave: he secretly retained the ability to name the next CEO in his will. And that CEO is Whitney.

"You're a multi-billionaire now," you say, still unable to process the meaning behind those words.

"No shit, Sherlock. I hit the lottery. Great. It doesn't mean anything if you're dead!"

"Then I won't die."

Whitney stomps her foot.

"Don't get carried away," you warn her.

She salutes you. "Aye aye! Operation Rescue The Bottom Bitch is a go!"

"Don't be that enthusiastic about it, either."

You click open the two latches on the aluminum case underneath Galatea's couch. Rose brought it with her from Cerise's apartment. Inside, there's two pistols: one for you and one for Whitney.

"Take this," you tell her. "Don't use it unless things go crazy."

She puts it in the waistband of her spats. You follow suit, concealing your gun in your waistband too.

Just as you're ready to go, Stackleford bursts through the front door. He's got a plastic bag from Subway in one hand, and an open bag of Cheetos in the other. He eats the Cheetos by throwing his head back and waterfalling them into his mouth.

"Power's out all over the place," he tells you as he bumps the door closed with his considerable girth. The orange stains around his lips are repulsive. "Also I heard someone say something about David Darkbloom dying, so congratulations I guess."

He approaches Galatea. "Hey Gal-Gal," he says, "I got you a ham sub. Check it!"

This finally snaps Galatea out of her seeming fugue state. She blinks a few times, then glances at you.

"there's a problem," she says.

"do you want to stop the bombs?" She asks as she settles into her computer chair, folding her ankles beneath her butt. It's the right question -- one you need to decide an answer to, quickly.

Before you respond, she opens a virtual OS, and then some sort of baroque, probably proprietary statistical process control program. You can't make heads or tails of its mostly text-based output, but Galatea explains it for you: "it's what i thought. darkbloom's servers remain down as of now. the power outage is keeping them cut off from the internet."

So despite all the efforts Darkbloom made to keep her out, this whole time she still had access to their internal systems.

"What does that matter?" You say.

"it's making us sick. or i think so."

You take a step back. "You think."

The glare of the monitor against her glasses obscures Galatea's eyes. "yes. the same thing happened to me on march 10th when the servers went down. i started

She stops mid-sentence, going still as stone. You wave a hand in front of her face.

She continues as if she had been speaking the entire time: "and she froze completely. like she was paralyzed."

"You cut out, Gal."

She looks at you. "i didn't realize until now. camelia didn't either... there's something about our implants that ties our brains to darkbloom's servers... if they blow up..."

"Dang," Stackleford says. "This is some Snow Crash craziness."

"Fuck off," you half-shout.

"there's another thing." Galatea pulls up a simple browser page now, with two input fields. "dead man's switch," she says.

"Don't tell me what I think you're telling me," you say.

"camelia didn't want to leave it to chance... if we were captured... or killed... she rigged it so it would still go off if we don't input our pgp keys every 24 hours..." She bows her head. "i have my key... but not hers... and she's dead..."

Whitney grabs her by the collar and hauls her up. "Then hack it or something! That's what you do!"

"i can't," Galatea says.

Whitney scowls and shoves her to the ground. "Yes you can! Fix it!"

"it would take the computational power of the entire universe... running for billions of years... there's no way... alabaster has to physically defuse the bombs."

"What's the deadline?" You say.

"3:00 am."

That's time enough. You can do this. Rescue Alex and Sable, clear out the Russians, defuse the bombs... easy, right?

A sudden rush of blood to your head leaves you stumbling as if drunk - you catch yourself on the back of Galatea's rolling chair before you fall over. Galatea's eyes are glassy again, vacant.

Maybe not so easy.

The sun is already setting on a darkened Palo Alto. You have to use a flashlight just to see your way down the stairwell of Galatea's ratty apartment building, to the front entrance, and out to the curb.

Outside, Tyrus is waiting. He's leaned up against your car, arms folded.

"You made me a promise," he says.

"Step off, asshole," Whitney says. "We've got errands to run."

He ignores her. "You said Darkbloom Analytics wouldn't exist by this time today. Far as I can tell, it still exists. What happened?"

"Change of plans," you tell him.

"Bull fucking shit. You have the detonator? Press the goddamn button."

In the descending gloom, you can't see anyone else on the street, but you have that certain psychic tingle on the back of your skull that tells you other eyes are watching. Tyrus is not alone.

Whitney's brash tone becomes more serious now: "I'm warning you," she says. "Get back. Let us go."

"You said no delays. Now you're ordering my own men around like you fucking own them? Who made you king shit, motherfucker? Telling them to go into a building you were supposed to blow up more than an hour ago? This shit is simply not gonna fly."

He steps forward, looms over you and Whitney. "I did my part," he snarls. "Now you do yours. Press the fucking button."

Whitney reaches for her waistband - you grab her wrist and stop her, sliding between her and Tyrus at the same moment, hoping that he didn't notice her grabbing for a fucking gun just now.

"You motherfuckers are straight up retarded," Tyrus says. So he definitely saw it -- great. "I've got heat on you from 360 degrees and then some. Go ahead. Pull a gun and see what fucking happens."

"See this girl?" You say. You indicate Whitney with a wave of your palm. "She may not be the brightest. Granted. But she owns Darkbloom Analytics now."

Tyrus arches an eyebrow.

"She's David Darkbloom's biological daughter. He left a will behind giving her everything - billions and billions of dollars. And the company itself. You're looking at the new CEO right here."

"That's the stupidest goddamn thing I've ever heard," he says. "Do I look like I was born yesterday?"

You hold up both hands in a sign of nonaggression. "I'm going to reach for Whitney's cell phone now," you say. "All right?"

"Watch yourself," Tyrus says, but it seems like he's going to let you.

You reach slowly into Whitney's pocket, pull out her phone. You hold it high aloft so any unseen, would-be assailants can see it's benign. You speed dial the last number and put it on speakerphone.

"Adam Epstein," the man on the other end replies.

You nod at Whitney, holding the phone to her lips.

"Hi Adam," she says. "Uh... just wanted to get some quick math from you... I kind of zoned out the last time we talked."

"Go ahead, Ms. Price."

"About all that money I'm gonna get."

"Yes."

"How much, again? Like how many billions?"

A pause. "There's a great deal to sort out, Ms. Price," he finally replies. "But Darkbloom's wealth is estimated at around $100 billion, in various forms."

"And I get to be CEO?"

"Err... like I said, there's a great deal to sort out. I advise you find a lawyer... there will be legal battles ahead, and I must remain a neutral executor on behalf of Darkbloom himself."

"Okay. Thanks Adam."

You hang up.

"Jesus fuckin' Christ," Tyrus says. "That was Darkbloom's lawyer."

"Believe me now?" You say.

"What are you offering?"

"Crazy ass," Tyrus says. "If the two of you need another gay little white boy, I know where to find 'em by the fuckin' dozen. I could give you five or six each. We don't need to go James Bond on these Russian assholes."

"There isn't a gay little white boy who's better," Whitney avers, leaning through the passenger side window. "Trust me."

"Where the hell are you?"

Cerise, on the other end of the line, is slow to respond. "Home."

"We have to be back on the bus in less than half an hour. Stop fucking around."

"I'm not. I went home."

"How did you get from Idaho back to California on your own?"

"Took a bus."

You heave a frustrated sigh. "Really. When?"

"Last night, not that you noticed. Or cared."

Usually, Cerise is better than this. The death of your parents turned her into an oddly caring, supportive sibling -- most of the time. But when she's badly drunk, and feeling sad, she gets like this. Petulant.

"Are you really back home already?"

"You sound happy that I'm gone."

"The only thing I'm happy about is that you're not about to end up stranded in goddamn Boise, Idaho. This is seriously the worst city on the planet."

Marquis is at the head of a retinue of armed men, in a garage down the road from Darkbloom Analytics. It's unsettling how excited he looks.

"Ready to bash some skulls?" He says.

He unfurls a map on the hood of a nearby Caddy. "We're gonna Batman this shit," he says. "I'll get up on this building here--" he points to an annex on the west wing of the facility, where HR is headquartered. It's only about 20 feet tall. "Climb in through the skylight, disarm the alarm on the emergency exit... let you in. We can swing around and go down to the server room. They won't see us until we're right on top of them. Probably."

You don't like the sound of that "probably."

It's a local thing. Nothing really exciting (unless you're into washed up 70s bands) but I've been going since I was a kid, and now that I'm in college it's a good excuse to meet with friends who I don't get to see a lot.

Lots of good food though. There's a ton of stuff to do, just not if you've already been a bunch of times.

That does sound like fun.

The anime con was pretty much exactly what one would reasonably expect. I lost horribly in the Smash tournament, but there were a lot of weebshit rhythm games set up on freeplay that I could get my fill of. I'm a sucker for that shit. Chose not to run my D&D game unfortunately, since the game room shared space with... all the other games. Just way the fuck too loud.

I think the most surreal experience I've ever had took place in the food court. Apparently the venue hosting the con was also hosting a Long Rifle convention on the other half of the property. So half the food court was occupied by 60-year old boomers in hunting gear, while the other half was 300 pound Hatsune Miku and Homestuck cosplays.

Overall, though, I had fun.

I don't think so (and that ship has probably sailed, at least for a few years, lol). It's mostly stuff like Blues Traveler and Soul Asylum. I think we had Kansas once, and Foghat when I was a lot younger. Those are the biggest names though, everything else either had one big single or is a band nobody has ever heard of.

"I've got a different strategy," you say.

"Excuse me?" Marquis says. He clearly doesn't like being second guessed.

"We need more people with us when we first sneak in. And people hanging back to get us out of there if things go sideways." You turn to Whitney. "Can you wait in my car for me? Be ready to go as soon as I come out."

"Fuck you," Whitney spits, slugging you. "I'm not letting you hide me out here while you go get shot at by mobsters."

"Naw..." Marquis mutters, staring off into space for a moment. "That's actually a good idea. Butchy here is the next CEO. Right? If Mara knows that, her minions know it too. You'd be going in there with a big fucking target on your head."

He signals to a couple of his lieutenants. "Shawn, Freddy, you're with us. Tenacious, stay out here in the car. The rest of you, plan doesn't change. Ready to go on my mark."

They nod their understanding.

You put your hands on Whitney's shoulders. "I'll be back in a few minutes with Alex and Sable."

She glowers, but after a few moments she relents. "If you die, I'll kill you!"

Night has fallen even more quickly than you expected, but that's for the best. You skulk through the darkness with Marquis and his two men.

The first one, Shawn - you remember him from the garbage dump, when he held you and Whitney hostage - throws off a backpack and pulls out a dremel as you get up to the gates on the west side of the building. The tool makes quick, if a little loud, work of the wrought iron bars. It's enough to slip through.

A rope with an honest to god grappling hook comes out next. Marquis wields it like a cowboy with a lasso, looping it over roof of the HR building in a single strong toss. After checking its hold with a few tugs, he gets to climbing. He's remarkably fast and limber. He's definitely done this before.

So far, so good.

He disappears into the gloom and you hear, faintly, the sounds of him on top, jimmying the skylights open.

Anxious moments pass. You keep glancing around the corner, towards the main entrance of the building, although only a vague silhouette of its main features are visible -- the fountain, the broad front windows, the trees and bike racks -- all swathed in deep and foreboding shadow. If there are men lying in wait, they're invisible to you.

And then: klaxons. Marquis accidentally tripped an alarm mechanism.

"Fuck!" Comes the far-off echo of his voice. "Get ready!"

It happens again. Your vision blurs for a moment. The sudden cacophony blends into an indistinct smear of noise. Gunfire and shouting and wailing alarms all become nothing but a shrill, insistent hum. The noise is focused on a spot that feels like it goes past your eardrum, into the space beyond - like a dentist's drill boring into your brain. Everything goes white for a second, two seconds, three.

When you gain your bearings again, you're on your hands and knees in the grass, heaving. The dark night lights up with muzzle flashes from the two men next to you.

"Go, go, go!" Marquis is yelling, presumably into his walkie-talkie.

Fast approaching are opposing muzzle flashes, and the voices of men shouting in Russian.

Damn it, damn it... you reach half-blind for your own gun and find it warm against your hip. It's awkward in your hands. You're not a crack shot like Rose is, far from it, and you may be more of a liability with this thing than not. But seconds matter now; above all else, you need to get inside the building and down to the server room where Alex and Sable are. They could be executed at any moment now that you've been found out.

You struggle to your feet as Shawn and Freddy flank you. You hold your gun aloft and try to see who the hell they're firing at, but it's hopeless; between your little pseudo fainting spell and the near total dark, plus the chaos engulfing you, you can't see anyone. It's all moving too fast.

From several yards away, at the tall front gates, comes the squeal of rubber on asphalt: the strike team of ten or eleven men Marquis had in waiting just rolled up.

Marquis bursts through the emergency exit at the side of the HR building and loops an arm under yours. "We're falling back now. They'll grab your friends."

"No fucking way," you spit, heaving off. You step forward, past Shawn and Freddy.

But as you do, Shawn goes down. His head is just suddenly gone: it explodes in a shower of gore. You duck, shouting, and roll out of the way. His corpse lands next to you with a thud.

"Goddamn it," Marquis shouts. He steps quickly back, foxtrotting, and Freddy follows suit.

"Don't you fucking abandon me!" You holler, still lying prone. "You leave, and your husband gets nothing! You hear me?"

Marquis wheels on you. The gunfire is retreating now, turning in the direction of the front gates as the second group of men stage their assault the Russians now.

"What did you just say?" Marquis demands. "My guys are dying 'cause of you."

"They're dying because of you!" You say. "You tripped that alarm!"

An orange bloom and deafening explosion rip through the night. You turn, and in the illumination of the fireball you see Russians lobbing grenades at Marquis's men. So much for not making a scene.

You stand, kick through the emergency exit and enter the HR building. Whether Marquis comes along or not is immaterial. There's no time to waste.

You cut through the darkened hallways and office space, the obnoxiously loud security alarms still blaring. You hold your gun in front of you, finger on the trigger, ready to fire. And as you enter into the main lobby of Darkbloom Analytics, you see your reason to: Vasily Kerimov, watching the vicious firefight from the safety of indoors.

Vasily's reaction time is unfortunately quicker. He spins: in his hands is a machine pistol, and he fires at you. You dive behind the main reception counter, the one sitting just below the massive 20-foot portrait of David Darkbloom.

You pant like a dog as your eyes adjust to the even dimmer space under the counter.

"Give it up, Alabaster!" Vasily calls. You hear the clack of his approaching footsteps. "If you cooperate, you can still save your friends downstairs. We will kill you, naturally... but they can live, at least..."

You sit on your butt, back against the wall, and wait, your breath running ragged. He could approach from any number of angles and you have no way to cover them all.

"Alabaster, please. Come out. Don't make me radio Stasi and tell her to slit Mr. Best's throat."

You set your jaw and try not to hyperventilate.

"Fine," he says. "I will treat you like a child, if I must. I am counting to three."

You've got no choice. You're going to need to stand up, and fire blindly.

"One."

You steady yourself and try to clear your mind of all other thoughts.

"Two."

You rock back and forth, preparing to spring up.

"Thr--"

A bang that echoes off the smooth wood-paneled walls. Bright light. The ruffle of something heavy hitting the tiled floor.

"Fucker!"

It's Whitney's voice.

You peek out from around the counter. Vasily is dead at her feet.

"I told you to wait for me!" You hiss. The gunfight continues apace, past the front entrance. You see the giant bronze globe that surmounts the fountain out front come loose from its pedestal and roll with a squealing crash to the ground. It barrels to the side and bowls over a screaming Russian, crushing him to death.

"It's a good thing I didn't!" Whitney says, running over and helping you to your feet. "Did you get Alex?"

"Not yet," you say. "But that's next."

"What are we waiting for? Come on!"

You kneel behind the counter again, pulling her with you. "I'll go. You need to wait behind -- for real now."

"Absolutely not. The CEO can't just sit around while a bunch of mooks shoot up her company."

"Goddamn it, Whitney. Don't you--" you sigh and shake your head.

"What?" She says.

"You can't. You have to go back, where it's safe -- wait for me. If I lost you..."

She cocks her head like a confused puppy.

"You idiot," you say. "Don't you understand what I'm telling you?"

"I understand you're wasting time. We need--"

"I love you."

Her jaw hangs slack for a moment. When she can move at all, she clasps a palm over it, eyes bulging.

"So for the last time -- please. Go wait somewhere safe. I'll be out soon."

"Ally..."

You pull her hand away and kiss her. It's a deep and forceful - if brief - kiss. She swoons against you, opening herself completely to your mouth, going almost limp.

"Okay?" You say when you pull back.

She shakes her head. "But I love you, too. You stupid... how can I let you go risk your life like this?"

"Because everything happening tonight is my fault. So it's up to me to fix it."

"Promise you'll be okay!"

"I promise."

"Double promise!"

"I double promise."

"Triple promise!"

"Whitney..."

She stands and steps back. "Back to your car?" She says.

"No. Across the street. The parking garage there. I'll meet you on the third floor."

"Why?"

"Just trust me."

Down the stairwell, down, down, down into total darkness. The flashlight on your phone illuminates nothing but a tiny cone a few feet in diameter at its greatest extent. Anyone could be waiting to ambush you down here.

You quickly try to see if there's a setting on the phone that will let you turn the flashlight's brightness up; while fumbling around, you pull up your camera app instead.

It still has only one photo on it: Alex.

>"Take a picture of me! I want to be the first photo on your new phone!"

Alex's happy double peace sign from just a couple months ago stares back at you. How did everything come to this in such a short amount of time?

You shake that thought off and hurry forward.

At the very bottom of the winding stairs, you push through the door to the server room.

The servers are running, even if they're not connected to the internet, and their eerie blue light is still illuminating the vast maze down here.

You call out, bluffing:

"Come out, Stasi. We've got you surrounded."

But the response that comes back isn't her:

"She's gone."

"...Marquis?"

You stride down the aisles of the server farm, towards the sound of his voice, your gun at the ready. He's standing in front of a wheeled chair, where a bug-eyed Alex is still hogtied with duct tape. You rush over, rip the tape from Alex's mouth.

"Ally... Ally..." he weeps once he can speak again, shaking all over like a wounded bird.

"Scared her away," Marquis says darkly, from beside you. "Almost had her... but not quite..."

"Are you okay?" You ask Alex. "Where's Sable?"

"I don't know... she's gone..."

You pull a pocket knife out and cut the duct tape off his hands. As you work on his ankles, Marquis taps you on the shoulder.

He's holding Penelope.

"You said Sand Reckoner wasn't done yet. But Stasi told me everything."

"What?" You stammer.

"You're double crossing Daddy? Huh? Thought you could team up with the Russians, wipe us out, we wouldn't realize till it's too late?"

You stand on shaky legs and step back.

"Marquis... I don't know what you're talking about--"

From seemingly nowhere, he produces a baseball bat, and whacks you in the back of the knees. You fall to the ground with a howl and your gun clatters out of your hands.

"Ally! Ally!"

"Give me the detonator," Marquis says. "Right now. Or I'll bash your fuckin' brains out."

That ringing comes, again. That crossing vision, that disconnection from reality. You're losing it.

"M-Marquis...: you manage. "Please... listen to me... whatever-- whatever-- whatever Stasi t-told you, it's--"

"You lying motherfucker!" Marquis screams. As your vision clears, you see him raise his bat above his head. You cower and try to cover your face with your hands, as if that will do anything.

"--GRAHH--!!"

You hear it before you process what you're seeing - the swift blur of motion that tackles Marquis to the ground.

Alex, even with his ankles tied, has managed to knock Marquis over. Marquis lands with a loud knock against the tile floor, his head rebounding back in a really painful looking bounce.

He lies there dazed for just a split second, his bat on the ground next to him. He and Alex both glance at it. With the concussion Marquis just sustained, Alex is quicker on the uptake. He grabs the bat and wriggles back up onto his knees. With a savage scream he brings it down - no hesitation at all. There's a sickening krr-ack and blood runs darkly all over the ground.

Marquis is still alive. Groaning, he reaches for your gun and gets his hands over it.

But that's the last thing he ever does. Alex is already bringing the bat down again.

And then again. And again, and again.

"AAHHHHH!! AAAAAHHH!!!" He shouts as he beats Marquis's head into a bloody, pulpy mess of brain matter.

You haul yourself to your feet and get behind Alex and pull him away from the horrible carnage of it. Only with your hands around him does he let go of the bat.

With halting, trembling motions, Alex looks down at his own bloody hands, his gore-spattered shirt, the corpse he's responsible for -- and it seems this is the first moment he actually processes that he just took a human life.

"I-- I--" He stutters.

And then he screams. Horribly -- way worse than the savage grunts he unleashed when he was actually killing Marquis. Those were screams of adrenaline and fear. This is a wail of pure despair. You've heard it once before: when Cerise got the call that mom and dad were dead.

You embrace Alex, hug him tight and pet his head, but he keeps screaming into you. His cries are only slightly muffled by your chest, and you feel him heaving. There's nothing you can do to console him.

We theorize that sexual predation by DB-001 ("Whitney") may produce berserker-like surges of adrenaline in the subject, similar to her own.
>>
>>2818285
Oh yeah, that'll be much better.
>>
Outside the front entrance, there's nothing but corpses and charred Earth. If anyone survived this mess, they're long gone.

Distantly, you hear sirens, and you know you need to hurry too.

You find Kay exactly where you expected her to be: camping out in the parking garage across the street, leaning against her shitty Subaru's hood, waiting. Whitney is next to her.

When Kay sees you, she throws up her arms in frustration. "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom!"

Only as Alex rounds the corner now does Kay realize that something terrible has happened. Still splattered with gore and looking even paler than usual, Alex is an awful sight.

"Good lord," Kay says. "You ruined a perfectly good little gay boy. What the hell happened?"

Whitney is at Alex's side now, petting him like he's a sick kitten who needs to be nursed back to health, cooing and hugging him.

"I need a favor," you say. "Take Alex and Whitney back to Galatea's apartment and wait there."

Alex has a thousand yard stare that seems to indicate he isn't really present for this conversation. Not even Whitney can rouse him.

Kay considers him for a few long moments, then: "All right. But I want a favor in exchange."

"Oh my god. What?"

"Whitney told me everything," she says. "I have to imagine you're not planning to blow up that building anymore. Assuming you survive the next few hours and she actually gets to serve as CEO, I want in too."

You give her a bewildered look.

Kay pokes you in the chest. "I want to be embedded. 24/7, unrestricted access to the inner workings of Darkbloom Analytics 2.0. For a year. No, two years. I'll start with a series of Time articles, then parlay that into a book deal--"

"For fuck's sake."

"Take it or leave it, Alabaster."

"You got it, chief."

She gets in the car. Whitney helps Alex into the backseat. Before getting in too, she says: "do you have enough time? You know... to do the thing with those bombs."

You check your phone. You've got five hours. You're not at all confident that's enough time.

"I've got more than enough time," you say.

Whitney kisses you goodbye and climbs in alongside Alex. Kay pulls away.

>Under Family Code section 2200 1, marriage between parents and children, ancestors and descendants of every degree, brothers and sisters of any degree — including half brothers and half sisters — and uncles or aunts with nieces or nephews is illegal in California.

Penal Code 285 also forbids sexual relations between the above, so that was illegal

On your way down to the manhole cover where you'll gain access to the sewers with the bombs you need to defuse, you take a quick look for Sable's van.

It's gone.

Somehow, in all the confusion, she slipped away.

You hope she's safe, wherever she is.

---

Wearing a lighted helmet, your hands work quickly, pulling charges off the garland of colored wires you have rigged beneath the building. You know every moment that passes is one moment closer to accidentally jihading yourself.

But your estimate of how long this would take, already conservative, soon proves to be an awful underestimation.

Two, three hours pass; you're hardly making a dent in the massive cache of bombs you have rigged beneath the building. Should you abandon the effort? Let Darkbloom Analytics blow up?

It doesn't matter. Either way, you're probably dead. If those servers go down permanently, you have the sinking feeling that you'll be a vegetable within a couple days.

12:00 AM comes and goes. 1:00 AM. 2:00 AM. You wipe the sweat from your brow and fight off the woozy, brain-foggy malaise gripping your every cell. Time isn't on your side. You're not going to make it.

"Alabaster!"

You turn. It's Rose. Back in town at the worst possible time, as expected.

You turn and set back to work.

She doesn't go away. She comes up and kneels down next to you. "Show me how," she says. "I can help."

"No, you can't. You'll fuck it up."

"I'm not stupid!" She insists. "In case you forgot, I scored more points than you at the quiz bowl championship. That makes me smarter--"

You turn, putting an index finger in her face. "I'm serious, Rose. Go away. I don't need your help. And I don't want it."

"You're going to get yourself blown up!" You say. "Get the hell out of here and let me work in peace!"

"I'm not leaving," Rose says, her voice low and level. "So show me how to help."

"Why?" You shout, seething. "Why can't you just, just fucking -- listen to me for once? Why can't you just go away?"

"It's because..." Rose drawls. Her voice is full of uncharacteristic trepidation. She trails off and wrenches her eyes closed. "Because... because..."

"Out with it!"

"Because I'm in love with you!"

Her confession echoes off the dark, grimy walls.

She stands there trembling, breathing heavy, waiting for a reply.

You turn in a worried little circle, unable to formulate a response. It comes as a shock to you, those words, from that person... but another part of your brain tells you that you actually shouldn't be shocked at all, tells you that you're a fucking moron for being surprised even a little bit.

Either way, it's out now. And now you know you'll never convince her to leave. Unless -- unless.

You stop in place, your back to her, and you realize what has to happen. You kneel down, keep working on defusing the bombs -- can't waste time, even now. This gives you a moment to prepare, too.

You take a deep breath, and then you let it go. "I hate you," you say.

All the thousands of times you've said those three words over the years, you've never put that kind of venom into it, that kind of forcefulness and meaning. You say it with real hatred dripping off every syllable.

When glance over your shoulder, you see that it landed with the force you needed it to. Tears stream down Rose's face, glinting in the light of your helmet. "W-what?" She says.

You keep going: "Did you think I was joking all this time? I hate you. I've always hated you. You're an obnoxious, pretentious, fat, stupid bitch. I hate you."

Rose is stumbling backwards as if you're physically striking her. You can't bear to watch; you look back down at your nimble fingers.

"Alabaster..." she breathes, her voice hoarse and hardly more than whisper. "Please... y-you don't mean that... be serious..."

"You're an ugly, unloveable harpy." Another bomb defused. "Sure, I played with you for a little while... because I didn't have anything better to do. Because it was fun for a little bit. And just like the pathetic waste of skin you are, you thought it meant I cared about you. But to tell you the truth? I'm bored of you now. I have other girls to fuck... girls I actually care about."

You steal another glance back. She's stammering but no words are escaping her lips. Her face is a wet mess of tears. She holds her hands to her cheeks as if to try to catch them and force them back inside.

"Leave me alone," you sneer. You turn to face your work again. "Fucking cunt."

You quickly wipe the tears from your own face as Rose's pathetic weeping fills the sewer.

When you wake up again, you're alone.

You stumble groggily to your butt, grope for your phone, check the time. 4:21 AM.

You glance at the bombs -- they're still there, a majority of them live and wired.

They were supposed to go off at 3 AM.

But you're not dead. And they haven't exploded yet.

You get to work again anyway, working with the urgent assumption that they'll go off at any second. It's almost 7 AM before you're done.

--

You climb out of the sewer.

On your knees trying your best to conceal yourself against the concrete barrier, you peek out from the first level of the parking garage, and catch a glimpse across the street to the cordoned-off scene of the violence at Darkbloom Analytics. Men and women in FBI coats are wandering around, taking photos and surveying the mess.

Noelle is there. As if she's goddamn psychic, she snaps her head around, looks directly across the street and locks eyes with you.

You freeze, terrified; but after a moment she turns, and doesn't seem to warn anyone else that she saw you.

Nonetheless, you beat a hasty retreat and leave out a side entrance down another road.

You walk back to Galatea's apartment. The sky is periwinkle in the immediate predawn, and streetlights are flickering back to life. People are milling around, talking excitedly about all the insanity that happened in the past 24 hours. You're anything but excited.

Cerise isn't at home when you get back from Boise. Was she lying after all? Is she stuck in that shithole town?

If she's anywhere else, you know where to find her.

You drive to North High.

It's past 11 PM; the school is deserted and its halls are lit only by the occasional emergency light -- the ones that stay on no matter what. It gives the school a sort of weird, otherworldly quality. You navigate the halls slowly, somehow worried about being seen. As you approach the anime club room, you see the lights are on, and then you hear the opening theme of NeeKyu blaring loudly.

Of course. Cerise came here, plastered no doubt, to drown her sorrows in the Weeb Clubroom and watch anime on the big projector screen. You could throttle her for worrying you like that.

"Goddamn it, Cerise--" you mumble as you step into the clubroom.

But she isn't there, either.

You turn in a confused semicircle, searchingly, but nope -- it's just you here.

Only when you close the lid of her laptop and kill the music do you hear it: whimpering echoing off the walls.

(continued)

You step into the hall again and follow the source of the noise.

Around the corner, you find her. Cerise is sitting against a wall, hands clasped around her knees, crying.

The school janitor is lying on the ground in front of her, his eyes open and his tongue lolling from his mouth. He isn't breathing.

"Oh my god, Cerise..." you say. You kneel down, check for a pulse. His skin is already cool and his heart isn't beating. There can be no doubt: he's dead.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." she says.

"What happened?" You say.

"Damon... he... he came at me..."

She speaks slowly and her words are slurred. She's obviously drunk -- more than drunk, she's on the verge of passing out.

"He attacked you?" You say.

She nods. "He... I choked him... he was going to rape me..."

"D-did he?"

She shakes her head.

The blazing panic within you, of discovering a corpse that your older sister is responsible for, passes like a stormcloud. You quickly assess the situation with a rational mind.

These are the facts.

Cerise, a student who graduated years ago, is trespassing on campus after hours, drunk, and has no obvious sign of physical trauma.

She killed a man -- one who wasn't trespassing. More than that: she choked him, let him die, and didn't even have the presence of mind to call for help when it was over.

She says it was self-defense, and you believe her unquestioningly. Will a court?

This is manslaughter. At the very least.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." Cerise says, over and over.

You grab her shoulders.

"You didn't kill Damon."

"Wh-what?"

"You didn't kill Damon. Damon was an arsonist. He's been burning down buildings with specially wired Roombas for a couple years now. Tonight he made a mistake. He accidentally burned down the school. And he died in the fire."

"Alabaster..."

"Say it. Tell that story to yourself again and again until you believe it."

She collapses against your shoulder, weeping. You hug her tight.

"I'll take care of everything," you tell her. "I promise... I promise."

At Galatea's apartment, it's all hugs and smiles from Whitney and Rose -- Stackleford tries to get in on the action too, but you swat him away.

Gal, Alex and Cerise aren't here, though. You ask where they are.

"Asleep," Whitney says. "In there." She points towards Gal's bedroom.

You head for the room, unafraid of breaches of privacy in a moment like this. You need to see them.

You open the door.

They're not asleep.

Cerise is sitting at Galatea's desk, staring dead-eyed at a laptop screen.

Alex is sitting on Galatea's bed, his face grim; beside him, a still-bloody tarp.

Galatea is on the floor next to the computer, hugging herself and rocking back and forth.

"Cerise...?" You say as Rose and Whitney elbow into the bedroom too.

She looks at you now. Her eyes are a brilliant, gleaming sapphire blue.

"Oh no... no, no..." You say.

"Sand Reckoner..." Rose breathes.

Whitney kneels in front of Galatea. Cerise gazes down at them, but it's like she isn't fully here.

"What did you do?" Whitney demands. "What did you do?"

"she told me to... she told me... it was the only way to get the pgp key..."

"Fix it! Fucking fix it!" Whitney yells.

You catch Cerise's attention. "Hey. Hey, are you--"

When her eyes lock with yours, she starts shaking. She looks like she's seeing hell itself. "I... I..."

She clutches her face.

"Cerise?"

"My eye... my eye..."

It starts as a barely audible whisper and increases in volume until she's shrieking. She slides to the floor, her face in her hands, rocking side to side, yelling in agony.

You cradle her, unable to shake her to her senses. Whitney is punching Galatea in the face, vicious blows, bloodying her up; Rose is on her phone, calling an ambulance; Alex's shellshock has been replaced by an utterly helpless look of despair.

And in your arms, your sister's shrieks turn back to whimpers, and then she passes out.

>>
>>2818733
what the fuck are you doing
>>
July 4, 2009

Of course your faggot brother had to ghost right before the fireworks. Mom, sitting on the towel and too tired to bother, sends you to go find him.

"Why me?" You complain.

"You have Alabaster-dar," she says, holding two fingers at her temple's like antennae. "Bewwwww. Ala-bast-or," she says in a robotic voice.

You groan. "Fine..." you say.

You go searching along the shore. You follow the curve of the beach, passing by family after family. They all seem happier than yours, laughing and joking and having a nice time. You wonder what the difference is.

Finally you come across a little isolated cove. Maybe you do have Alabaster-dar, after all. You know he's probably here.

You climb over an outcrop of rocks and into the cove.

Yep. He's here. And he's jacking off, the pervert.

He senses your presence. He whips his neck in your direction, at the same time falling forward and tugging his swim trunks back up. Not in time. You saw it all.

"Pfff-- were you-- oh my GOD, Alabaster!"

"What are you doing here? Go away!"

"I was looking for you, you little dork. Mom was worried."

You sit in the sand beside him. He looks away, turning bright red.

"You're such a pervert," you say. "Only someone like you would do something like that in a place like this."

"I don't want to hear it," he says. He points at you. "Or maybe you think Mom would like to know about that copy of Limewire you keep hidden on the family computer in a folder labeled 'homework.'"

Your laughter turns into a choke. "Y-you-- how do you know about that?!"

At this moment, a brilliant burst of green pyrotechnics in the sky illuminates your blushing faces. As the light fades, the crackling boom reaches your eardrums.

A few quiet moments pass. Alabaster stands. "I'm going back."

"Wait--" you say, but you're not sure why. You reach out to clasp his hand. "Why don't we stay here for a second?"

A blue burst of light flashes like a strobe in the sky. You see his confused look.

"What?" he says. "Why should we?"

You don't know. You can only shrug.

"If you want me to do your summer homework for you," he says imperiously, "you can just forget it. You're not going to butter me up so easily."

"That's not it. It's just... it's so nice and quiet here. I thought we could watch the fireworks together."

He pulls his hand from yours and steps back, looking you over. The fireworks begin to come in a continuous stream now, the bubble-wrapping pop of explosions and white smoke accentuating the glittering panorama of color.

A beat passes, the kind of beat that feels like it has the whole universe hinging on it.

"Okay.". He sits down. "But don't try anything weird."

As you sit there beside your annoying little brother, leaning against each other, something feels somehow different. Like a critical moment has come and gone without remark - like a choosing has changed it all.

1. What was the ultimate trigger that made you decide it was finally time to bring Fuck Quest back? Those of us in the Ghost Thread saw the Anonymous post back in January teasing the anniversary (I assume that was you). Were you really planning that entire time?

2. Were you in Japan at all for the premiere of the Chuu2 ~Take on Me~ movie? There are a hilarious number of parallels between it and FQ2 (including that reference on THE CHART), despite the BDs only being released and translated a few weeks ago.

3. A question on thematics - FQ2 is really fucking Greek. Not just because of the incest and gay shit (heh), but in the story structure itself - Darkbloom's hubris leading to his ultimate downfall, the idea of Sand Reckoner being a very literal Deus Ex Machina, the general feeling of the so-called "God" we've created with the Internet of Things - even down to the appeals to the muse (the audience) that early Greek plays were so noted for (something that generally always tickled me about quest threads in general). Is this a deliberate echo, or am I reading way too much into it?

I have a theory on 421, but dunno if I wanna share it quite yet since it's sort of a meta-beyond-meta stretch.

I was planning to announce this at the end of the Q&A, but I guess I'll say it here, now.

Fuck Quest will return in January.

If the ending tonight didn't kill your interest in seeing FQ return (please come back, IaTM! I'll miss you, sincerely.) - then I'm sure this hurts to see.

This isn't to make an excuse, but I want to give you an idea of why:

With tonight's episode, Fuck Quest 2 has crested 200,000 words in length. That doesn't count ancillary material like the news articles on Twitter, the OP "previously" recaps, etc. Just the raw text of every episode.

You've probably heard of NaNoWriMo. The goal is to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in length during the month of November. (I don't take part because it's an annoying subculture, but you see the idea there).

Fuck Quest 2 began on 4/21, and it is now 8/19, which means I have just completed four NaNoWriMos back to back to back to back. Working always under a time pressure because although it takes a long time between my posts in these threads, I am trying to get things written as quickly as possible. Plus, it eats up my Saturday, and a lot of times, my Sunday too. It can be draining.

I still love running the quest. It's been as wild and fun a ride for me as for you (hopefully). But I know if I continue at this pace I will burn out, again. I need to take a break and think about a structure for season 3.

That doesn't mean I will be quiet in the interim. I will continue to post supporting material on Twitter and so on.

I'm sure when I first began again, a lot of you didn't expect me to finish. Although I haven't finished yet, I have now completed the entire season, and I hope that gives you enough confidence to wait patiently until January.

Question: Do you have any thoughts regarding a FQ VN project like the one mentioned earlier at some point? Presumably after S3 is over. I know a few artists who might be receptive to the idea.

As for resuming in January, I think it's important to rest as much as you think is necessary. The amount of effort it must take to write this much in real time already seems crazy to me, so avoiding burnout should be a top priority.
>>
>>2818839

Saddening but I will stick with it, I need to see the light at the end, and as they say you have our best interests at heart.
>>
Man just when you thought you were home free from the Russians now you have angry gay black guy waiting in the wings
>>
>>2818852
See ya then, OP.

Dropping some questions here:

1. Were there any choices we made that had drastic consequences, even though we wouldn't have realised it at the time? Were there any times we narrowly avoided a total disaster?

2. You seemed to have had this series planned out for a hell of a long time, but were there any major plot points that you only came up with after S2 had already started? (Renee being Whitney's mother, for instance)

3. What were your favourite lewd and non-lewd scenes this season?
>>
>>2818803

>>2818839

Take your time, I think the results are worth it.
>>
>>2818839
This got me thinking. I only have one question, but to make up for that it's three times as vague:

1. You compared the scale of writing Fuck Quest to writing for NaNoWriMo. However, the result of people trying to write that quickly is, at best, a decent first draft -- not something nearly as gripping and cohesive as Fuck Quest. How do you reckon you've written such a quality story under those constraints?
>>
Some of these won't be about this season, so feel free to ignore them, but I need to at least ask.

Who were the 9 girls?
Could we have fucked them all this season if we had played our cards right?
Will Rose 2: Electric Boogaloo make a comeback?
What was your favorite scene to write?
Did we ever make an unexpected decision, or did you play us like a damn fiddle the entire time?
Was there a scene you wanted to write, but voters went a different direction?
People have posted things in thread that were later referenced in quest, do you have a favorite?
Did bringing those 2 guys with us into the break in even matter?
Is the number 421 itself important, and that's why we see it everywhere, or is there an event or idea related to 421, and that's what's important. For example, is 911 important because the number is important, or because of the attack on 9/11?
What do you think is the shittiest thing each character has done?
Why did Cerise really kill Damon?
Is Kaa-san really gone for good?
Was there a chance to go beyond the 9/9?and 1/1?
What the fuck is Noelle's deal? How much of her interactions with us bullshit? Why did she let us go?
Did Darkbloom kill our parents? He said he killed Amber's under torture, but I don't think he ever technically admitted to killing ours.
If the 4 implants have the same hardware, could they theoretically be upgraded to have the full SR package?
What made you decide Whitney would be David and Renee's bastard?
What were some of the best decisions we made, and the worst ones?
Will Alabaster say "I love you" to all his haremites next season, or will he keep being a fag about it?
Is there anything you feel we've missed this season that we should have paid more attention to?
You've made nods to the old plans for Season 2 this season, are they anything more than just a reference or two.
What even the fuck happened in Episode 11 / Episode 1?
What video did Darkbloom plan on showing the Senate?
What would have happened, broadly speaking, if we had let Stackleford die, beyond having once less waste of space in our life?
What was your favorite audience theory this season?
What was the hardest scene for you to write, from just writer's block on getting the words out, to the subject matter being actually difficult to write?
If you could change some things about this season, from subplots, to delivery, to timing, what would they be?
What was your favorite supplemental material to make? For the one person who might care, mine was Whitney's test.
What scene were you the most excited to write yourself, or to show the audience, if there was a difference?
Is there anyone you wish you had spent more time on this season?

These are quite possibly all dumb questions:

1. I've seen occasional mentions from others about you doing other quests. Were there other quests between FQ1 and FQ2?

2. This is one you can flat out ignore because it kinda borders on "too personal" but I need to get this out there: Do you have anything else you've written?

3. What are some of your influences?
3b. Do you have a reading list?

4. I've listened to albums from Milli, DAOKO, Cibo Matto, and St. Vincent since FQ2 began. Do you mind hitting me with some more albums? Doesn't even have to be FQ related. The more interesting the better.

5. Did you have a general theme in mind you wanted to convey going into FQ2? Or to put it another way, did you have any goals in mind aside from major story plot points you wanted to achieve?
5b. Did you accomplish those goals/convey those messages?

6. FQ2 was absolutely littered with easter eggs, references, and just tiny little details. How many of them did we pick up on?
6b. What did we miss?

7. Your dedication is incredible. How do work up the motivation to continue writing?

8. Do you like ham? I like ham.

>Anonymous post back in January teasing the anniversary
I can answer that one and put the mystery of that post to rest. That wasn't OP Studios; that was me. All the way back when FQ was originally airing I had the foresight to save the threads rather than relying on the archives being up forever. The surprise I had planned to upload on to the ghost thread during the 4th FQ anniversary was what I dubbed a "Blu-ray release" of sorts. On top of the actual quest threads, I also saved other threads like the Stacklefuck NTR scare which was made in a separate thread from the actual story threads (named "FUCK QUEST POST RAGE THREAD" in pic related) as well as other stuff that concerned FQ. However, there were several reasons why I never uploaded it. The first being that it was saved using old Firefox (Firefox 18 I think). As a result, it only seems to work on Firefox browsers unless someone tweaks it to work universally on other browsers (I've tried it on Chromium and it doesn't render; I assume it's the same on Chrome). The other reason was, while my archive does have all the small thumbnail images, I didn't realize that the original images were not saved and so you can't enlarge them. The last reason was because the current archives still seem to work so I didn't see a reason to upload it. For now, it's just my own local, personal archive unless there's some interest in it.

In other news, I have also been saving this season and plan to save the next. This time however I've saved the original images so that you can enlarge them. I have also edited in the pastebin lewds straight into the posts so that it's all self-contained as can be seen in the bottom half of pic related. You can also change the theme to Tomorrow as well.

Don't worry Anonymous-dono, I made exactly the same mistake when I tried to archive the old threads. It's a relief that you're putting together a proper one for the newer seasons.
>>
A few questions.

Did you come up with the characters first and fit their anime avatars to them or were the FQ characters somehow inspired by the anime characters?

What came first: The idea to have VR/AR-type technology as a major plot point this season or wanting a way to explain S1?

Would you have been prepared to kill Stackleford?

I know you'll be wanting to concentrate on S3 now, but is a VN something you've considered writing? Doesn't even have to be FQ related, I wonder if that's a direction you could see your writing going.

Do you have any particular interest in Silicon Valley/Big Data companies and their role in emergent technologies like VR/AR? Or was using that as a setting just an excuse to write a story about shadowy corporations? The parallels in the story to real life people and current events is quite explicit and you seem to have quite a tragic view of future technology and the people involved with it.

Cerise realized that Ally didn't have enough time to disarm the bombs before they detonated so she convinced Alex and Gal to stick the implant in her (hence the bloodied tarp) so she could get Amber's pgp key and give Ally another 24 hours.
>>
>>2819802
>>2819819
Also the flashback implies that that one decision back in 2009 is somehow connected to Vivian surviving the car crash that would have irrevocably injured her.
>>
>>2819832
I don't think of it so much implying that that singular moment indicates a solid divergence point - especially, taking S1 into account, there were already many other points in the timeline that impacted Vivian's fate (the entire thing between David and Renee). Keep in mind, S1 is veritably completely separate from S2 solely through Renee's lack of cake status.

That particular scene on the beach certainly butterflied the way our relationship with Cerise would develop, however. Certainly the flashback of her writing her Berkeley application essay from S1 would vary significantly just as a taster.

The more important takeaway here is the same theme OP has been touching on since the beginning - that every single choice matters, and can drastically alter the very fabric of the world around us.

I also now want, more than ever, art of Cerise and Alabaster side-by-side in that little cove, backs to the camera, their frames a silhouette against the fireworks show blazing out over the sea.
>>
Some longform questions for you OP.

1. Obviously with a third season in the works it would have sucked to kill off too many major players but did any of the harem members have potentially deaths in the cards that we narrowly avoided? Alex and Sable were in some shit at the start of the finale and there were a couple of tense moments throughout the season like the desert chase scene, yet things turned out (relatively) daijoubu.

2. Speaking of the chase scene in the desert Rose killed a couple of men in the action. She has lots of experience with guns but even after killing she remained in (again relatively) stable mental health. Was this done to avoid overplayed tropes of PTSD? Or has Rose killed before so she's used to it? Where's Rose C?

3. David was my favorite character this season. He wuz a good boy and dindu nuffin. As a whole the readers were pretty cautious of him so we tended to avoid him whenever we could, usually to go slam some puss, but was it ever a possibility to work more closely with him? That probably would have been a pain to write as it would throw a lot of character alliances completely out of wack but I think it would have been an interesting path

4. In what ways are your characters designed in your head? Do you get an idea of a character and then find a similar looking anime character to represent them or is it the other way around? For example did Rose always have huge boobs or was that decided when Mami was chosen as her avatar

It'll be a long wait but it'll be worth it. Enjoy your well deserved break OP! It's going to be tough waiting 5+ months to finally get that one-on-one tender and loving scene with Alex, though.

In the VR Fuck Quest sequence why does Camelia show up? Was is because of how she's connected to the servers? Was the glitching out just because we were freaking out and going against what had happened before? How long could we have stayed in the simulation?

Is Rose 2 existing and having the last name Catachresis plot relevant or just a red herring/reference?

Do you think you would ever add a trans character to FQ?

Also I was listening to this song the other day and thought it would make a good sad theme for Alabaster and Cerise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN1bwOs224A

ONE WEEK LATER.

You find Saul and his wife in the lobby, on the Darkbloom Analytics side of the roped-off area where the FBI has their temporary office space set up. You have to hand it to the feds: putting their investigation hub not only on-site but right in the middle of the building's main hall, sends a clear message to everyone here: you're under the microscope.

Saul and Noelle are giving each other silent glares from across the cordon. It's sort of like a South Korean solider facing up to a North Korean soldier at the DMZ.

"Alabaster," says Mrs. Mallory as she sees you coming up. She lays a hand on your shoulder. "How's Cerise?"

"Better," you say. Mr. and Mrs. Mallory join you on the way to the elevator. "She's a fighter."

"That's good to hear," she says. "Are you holding up all right, too?"

You shrug.

In the elevator, Saul says: "Neither of us are probate attorneys. We know really very little. And this is a massive undertaking. So I've gotten a few friends involved who know more about it than I do, to help things along."

"That's fine," you say. "I trust you to do the right thing." (Of course you do. You explained quite clearly to Saul that if Whitney gets her fortune, Rose will never have to want for anything ever again.)

On the top floor, in the reception area outside the executive conference suite, is a small army of suited men. Saul shakes their eager hands each in turn and goes full A-type personality as he greets and jokes with them. "A few friends?" Hell, this must be half the people in Silicon Valley with JDs.

Mrs. Mallory is in the sea of lawyers now, too, trading well-wishes and quick catch-ups: how are the kids, did you ever get that garage addition, still planning to buy that movie theater? -- and so on. You tune it out.

You glimpse Rose now, too. It feels fitting to bump into her here -- waiting outside the meeting room for a critical interview.

You pull her aside.

"How's Cerise?" she asks.

"You're too much like your mother. Cerise is doing a little better. I mean, she's still... anyway, she'll be fine."

Rose nods.

"There's something I wanted to tell you," you say.

She frowns, and waits for you to come out with it. This is hard to do, but you know you need to make amends.

"About what I told you in the sewer. I didn't -- I didn't mean that."

"I'm sorry, what?" Rose says.

Now you're the one frowning. "Don't make this into a big production. That's the best you're getting out of me. I didn't mean any of it."

"What on Earth are you talking about?" Rose cuts in, and her confusion sounds genuine. "The sewer? What, the one where you had all those... you never said anything to me down there. I never even set foot down there."

You search her face for tells, but you think she's being honest. She doesn't remember confronting you, her confession, the awful things you said.

You step back. "Just... forget it."

"You're freaking me out. Don't lose your head too, Alabaster."

In the conference room, Whitney sits at the long mahogany table's head. She wears an outfit you don't think you'll ever get used to seeing: an executive suit and dress pants. The rest of the board, what remains of it, is in session.

Vivian is here too, with her mother: both are wearing all black, their faces veiled, in mourning.

Saul and Mrs. Mallory settle in on opposite sides of Whitney. Mara has her own personal attorneys there to advise as well.

"Thad McMichael..." Whitney looks up from the reference sheet in her hands. "Where's he?"

"He was... arrested," Dalton says.

"Child porn," Nelson adds. "Nasty stuff."

Whitney frowns. "Sable Guiteau?" She asks.

"Still looking," Armstong says. "I have top guys on it. But as of now, we have to assume she won't be back."

Whitney uses her pen to point at each of the board members in turn. "Okay. So far, the board is the Russian connection over here, an intern -- no offense, Ally -- a security guy who didn't realize there were bombs underneath the building," (Dalton chokes and sputters at this casual revelation), "an MIA mad scientist, a politician who got kicked out of office and a pedophile. Am I missing anyone?"

"Me," Nelson says.

"And Casual Friday here," Whitney finishes. "Okay. You schmucks are afraid I'm gonna run this company into the ground? It sounds like you were already six feet under before I even got here."

"I move that we oust this horrible girl and put me in charge as interim CEO until Vivian can take the reins," Mara says.

"Motion fails," Whitney says.

Saul leans in and whispers in her ear.

"Oh, well. I guess I have to let you guys vote on it."

Mara, Dalton, and Armstrong vote yea. You and Whitney of course vote nay. It all comes down to Nelson's vote. Folding his arms, smiling, and looking Mara directly in the eyes, he says: "nay."

"Nelson--" Mara begins.

"It's nay. David Darkbloom made a lot of mistakes, Mara, but he was right about one thing. You should never be allowed to control this company. I'd rather have Ms. wrong-side-of-the-bell-curve over here."

Whitney points at him. "I assume that's an insult, but thank you! Motion fails."

She fiddles idly with her pen now, before turning to Mara and saying: "Hey Mara. Ya fired!" She does that wheezing laughter thing she falls into whenever she's really amused: "heeeh heeeh. I've always wanted to do that. Ya fired!"

Saul whispers in her ear again. Her smile drops. "My lawyer informs me I can't do that at this current, present juncture."

"This is what you've just voted for," Mara tells Nelson, indicating Whitney with an exasperated wave of her palm. "Are you happy now?"

Whitney cuts through, pointing again at Mara: "still though -- ya fired! Haha. I love that. But, uh, legally speaking... you're not really fired. But... ya fired!"

"Whitney..." you say. "Maybe it's time to move on to interim replacements... I think you had suggestions for CPO and CTO?"

"Oh, yeah, that. Yeah. Let's get started."

A couple hours later, Whitney's first board meeting as CEO adjourns. The company still exists and no one else died, so that's a win, right? And she only dozed off one time. (No one noticed except for you and Mrs. Mallory, who nudged her politely awake.)

The board assented to Tyrus and Alex coming on as permanent replacements for Thaddeus and Sable.

Whitney purposely left the CFO position vacated by Vasily Kerimov open -- so that you can back her up on board votes. The political intrigue has already begun apace.

Having Tyrus on the board is going to be... terrifying, frankly. A few days ago you heard him describe, in gory detail, all the horrible things he plans to do to Stasi in retaliation for the death of his husband. It made you shudder in barely-suppressed fear. He can never know the truth of what happened.

---

You join Whitney in what used to be David Darkbloom's office. She intends to take it for herself, it seems. You close the door to get a little privacy from Kay, who's already busily getting herself set up in a vacant corner office just a short jaunt down the hall.

"Check out this fucking chair," Whitney says. She sits in Darkbloom's tall-backed leather executive swivel chair. Holding the lifting mechanism to brace herself, she leans way back.

"Whitney--"

"It's all ergonomic and shit! Bio-dad had great taste."

Whitney's lean hits a critical point and the chair tips onto two of its wheeled legs, nearly toppling over. She has to windmill her arms wildly to stop her momentum and right herself again. When the chair lands back on all four wheels with a thud, she pauses in place, uncomprehending the workings of physics just now. And then she laughs.

You feel a presence behind you. It's Mara and Vivian entering the office.

"Oh, you're still here," Whitney says, leaning to one side to look past you. She locks eyes with Mara. "Great. Could you run down to the cafeteria and grab me a cup of coffee?"

Mara sneers. "Just because my late, dear husband scribbled out a two sentence will leaving everything to the slime that dribbled out of his condom 20 years ago, doesn't mean it's ironclad. I will fight you over every fucking dime, you stupid cunt."

Whitney considers this for a few moments. The silence is palpable.

Finally, she pulls out her handbag and fishes through it.

She takes a dime and flicks it across the room. It describes a perfect parabola and beans Mara directly in the center of her forehead. A circular red indentation is visible in her pale skin: FDR in reverse. She flutters her eyes in baffled indignation.

"First one's free," Whitney says.

Mara turns on her heels and leaves the office, slamming the door behind her.

"I take milk and sugar!" Whitney calls after her.

Vivian is still here. This is the first time you've been alone with her since everything that happened that night.

In her exquisitely brocaded and intricately laced black dress, she looks less like a grieving daughter and more like a convention-goer, but the expression on her face -- the same one she's been wearing for a week now -- is a deep and obviously sincere sadness.

"Congratulations," she says simply.

You have no idea what the proper response is.

She turns and goes to the window overlooking the front gates. The globe that used to sit on top of the fountain is still sitting where it fell to the ground, roped off with caution tape. She stares at it. The sunlight of the mid-afternoon makes Vivian's porcelain skin look almost ghostly.

"Alabaster Soliloquy. Somehow, some way... I know you were responsible for father's death."

"I'm sorry for your loss," you say -- in a way you hope comes off as authentic rather than blithe.

"No you are not," Vivian says, curtly. "No one is. Not even mother is."

"Hey," Whitney says. "Have you ever been to Disneyland? We should go sometime. Sisterly bonding and all that."

"I am not the theme park type."

Whitney purses her lips.

Turning finally to face you, Vivian says: "I understand. In the past few days I have learned so many awful things about father. The news has become a ceaseless procession of his sins, each more horrible than the last. Every day I am subjected to some new revelation about the depths of his venality, his sadism, and his depravity. He was not the man I thought he was."
>>
"Things will get better," you offer. "It might be hard to see that now, but they will. I speak from experience."

"You do. My father took your parents from you." She pauses, smooths her dress. "You took mine from me."

"Vivian, I--"

"I watched it happen with my own two eyes. I know you orchestrated it."

She looks this way and that around the room as if searching for something - or maybe she just has a bittersweet nostalgia for the trappings of Darkbloom's office. "Was there no other way?" she finally asks.

"I don't know," you admit.

"Mother will want you both dead. The only reason she hasn't ordered you killed is that you hold Sand Reckoner -- that, and the cascading will."

(If Whitney should die, the Darkbloom fortune devolves to you; if you die, it devolves to Cerise; if Cerise dies, it devolves to Rose; if Rose dies, it devolves to her parents; if they die, it all goes to charity.)

"We know that," Whitney says. "She'd stab me about 20,000 times if she could."

"What do you think we should do?" You ask.

"You murdered one of my parents already. I am sure you will find some way to murder the other one, in time."

She steps forward, slowly, slinkingly, and lays a hand against your chest.

"I can understand, but I can never forget what you did." She steps back. "No matter what, Alabaster Soliloquy, you will not replace my father. Nor will I allow this slattern who calls herself my sister to bring his company to ruin."

"Whoa," Whitney says. "Cool it with the thesaurus-based insults, missy. I've still got 18 years worth of big sister noogies to pay you back with."

"I look forward to working with you both," Vivian says. "Farewell for now."

She goes, leaving you wondering what is truly going through her mind.

"They were always crazy, dumbass."

"Crazier, then. Whitney... we're headed for really dark times here. I don't want to scare you -- but we need to remember that. There are so many powerful people against us... people who want to take everything we have... Russian mafia... FBI... Tyrus and his men... even your own sister--"

"Holy shit," Whitney says, craning her neck to look underneath the desk on her side. "Bio-dad has a tap that dispenses diet Coke! What the fuck? This is amazing!"

She hops up and grabs a glass from a shelf on the wall. She pours herself some diet Coke. "Want some?"

"Whitney..."

She sits down, blows on the drink's foamy head to dispel the bubbles, and takes a sip. "Sorry. Go ahead. I'm listening."

>1. What was the ultimate trigger that made you decide it was finally time to bring Fuck Quest back? Those of us in the Ghost Thread saw the Anonymous post back in January teasing the anniversary (I assume that was you). Were you really planning that entire time?

As another anon said, I was not the ghostposter. The idea for Fuck Quest 2 came to me not long before I started tweeting again. Like the original, the concept came to me after waking from a nap.

This was when Cambridge Analytica/Facebook/etc. scandals were big in the news. I pictured a version of Fuck Quest more rooted in realism, a version of David Darkbloom who was a Big Data silicon valley type. So the conception was very topical.

Other ideas quickly sprouted from that. I knew to do this I would have to structure it as a reboot, and that gave me a lot of freedom to explore new things.

>2. Were you in Japan at all for the premiere of the Chuu2 ~Take on Me~ movie? There are a hilarious number of parallels between it and FQ2 (including that reference on THE CHART), despite the BDs only being released and translated a few weeks ago.

No. I take credit where it's due but I can't claim this was intentional. I only watched the Chuu2 movie after someone pointed it out. The parallels blew me away, the phone tracking app in particular -- I couldn't believe it. Yes, even Cerise's favorite song on the chart was a coincidence.

Yes and no. There are definitely parallels I intended, with the naming of the tech, and parallels that exist because they're timeless tropes (David's hubris being his downfall) and parallels that aren't intended but I do feel are valid to draw (the point you made with appeals to the audience in Greek plays). I believe that readers should be in conversation with the text primarily, not the author; in other words, what I intend and what I tell you is the "meaning" of the story, is only as valid as anyone else's interpretation. Being the author does not make me the ultimate arbiter of the manifold meanings and pieces of symbolism you can find.

>Rose was so mentally destroyed by Alabastors rejection that she literally struck the memory away from her head to stay sane

That is scary, hot and somewhat understandable to me, rejecting Rose broke my heart, this is a good enough redemption, let's just act like it never happened.

>First one's free," Whitney says.

>Mara turns on her heels and leaves the office, slamming the door behind her.

>"I take milk and sugar!" Whitney calls after her.

At first I was worried about Whitney being CEO, but now I'm fully on-board, having a....Genius like Whitney behind this desk will make DA the most smartest company in the world.

>How has audience participation altered the plot of season 2?

In a ton of ways. To give you a specific example, choosing to let Cerise and Rose in early on the plot with Camelia hit me completely by surprise and changed the entire path for the story that I had planned in my mind. More on audience choices later, there was at least one other question and more I wanted to say.

>Why did you choose a twink character and did you expect them to become so popular?

Traps are a particular fetish of mine and I wanted to cater to that. FQ is my magical realm, after all! I knew Alex would be popular because of the warm reception he got in the scrapped S2 synopsis.

Is railing a cute boy in a maid costume gay? Most definitely, Alabaster is hard gay for Alex, and that's hot.

I'm not opposed, but as you said we'll have to decide on that when Season 3 ends. I don't know what it would look like -- a retread of seasons 2/3, of season 1, of all combined (Fuck Quest/Fuck Quest Alternate)... something else? It could be exciting.

It seems pretty clear that you wanted to humanize Darkbloom before he met his end, make him a more sympathetic character, was this so we would have a more conflicted feeling about seeing him go, or about making Vivian's anger at his killing feel more understandable?

>1. Were there any choices we made that had drastic consequences, even though we wouldn't have realised it at the time? Were there any times we narrowly avoided a total disaster?

Yes. Again, letting Rose and Cerise in changed everything, as I said. There was also, off the top of my head...

1. Inviting Alex to the sleepover circa episode 7. Not inviting him would have ended up with Tyrus's men savagely beating him when they went to his apartment looking for Whitney. That would almost certainly have turned the audience non-negotiably and permanently against the idea of working with Tyrus... maybe Camelia, too.

2. Ultimately allying with Camelia. It would have been possible to align with Darkbloom, which would have HUGE consequences, although I did expect you to side with Camelia in the end. I'm honestly not sure what I would do if you chose the Darkbloom route.

3. Dissuading Vivian from going to congress. This was a choice that could have gone either way, I was excited for both. This was the point where you decided how the season would end, although no one realized it. Darkbloom would be alive if Vivian went to DC; episode 14 would have ended with Vivian finding where Camelia had Darkbloom held hostage, and either killing or incapacitating her.

There are others, but these are the ones that stick out to me. I usually don't go into alternate possibilities, but I wanted to be clear that we weren't on rails the way we were in the original. Your choices made a difference at many junctures.

Of course, there's also the fact that I take your sentiments to heart not only when branching off of choices... your feedback and the general mood of the thread also dictates things in other ways, beyond the choices you make.

>2. You seemed to have had this series planned out for a hell of a long time, but were there any major plot points that you only came up with after S2 had already started? (Renee being Whitney's mother, for instance)

The one you list as an example came after S2 started... episode 2 or 3, I hit on the concept of Whitney being David Darkbloom's bastard. Renee being in prison, was an idea from later in the run too... I wasn't sure whether to have her be in Palau, teaching high school, dead or possibly just not existing entirely. This route worked out the best. Galatea being a research subject along with Camelia and Alabaster was also decided well into the run.

>3. What were your favourite lewd and non-lewd scenes this season?

Hard to decide! I really, honestly can't make a choice. But, some thoughts...

Lewd: Anything involving Cerise really gets me going, especially when she got involved with us and Alex. There was also Vivian's deflowering, which was really hot to me. Camelia in the massage parlor was something I wanted to do since the beginning of the season and I shoehorned it in just because I found it so sexy. But pretty much any lewd scene you saw, exists because it's something that gets me off.

Non-lewd: episode 11 was as wild to run as it was to experience. Beyond that, there were some comedic moments that I loved doing -- Rose and Alabaster bickering, Whitney being a dumbass, etc -- one that sticks out to me, and I think stuck with some of you, is Camelia's "nahhhh" moment. I also loved all the moments of high tension, such as the car chase in the desert, and the last two episodes... ramping it up and watching the characters lose their shit as everything goes wrong, is really fun.

>1. You compared the scale of writing Fuck Quest to writing for NaNoWriMo. However, the result of people trying to write that quickly is, at best, a decent first draft -- not something nearly as gripping and cohesive as Fuck Quest. How do you reckon you've written such a quality story under those constraints?

I say this not to fish for compliments because I know anyone reading this has a positive opinion of FQ and will disagree with me. So I'm really not looking for you to chime in and say I'm wrong, but: I really, really don't like my own prose, especially in season 2. And while there's a lot I'm very happy with in terms of how the story panned out, there is SO MUCH I missed and was disappointed with too. So many missed opportunities and things left hanging, stuff I just couldn't juggle due to the sheer scale and the time pressure. I made a lot of mistakes... plot-wise, character-wise, and with the prose itself. If I rewrote it, a great deal would change, and it would probably double in length.

I haven't written regularly in a long time and I haven't been reading very much either, and I think it shows. I consider my actual prose much worse than it was in FQ1-- and I didn't like it back then either, so you can see how self-critical I am this time around.

Overall, my opinion is: the experience was a blast, but the product I created wasn't anywhere near good enough. I can only try to do better in season 3.

Pff, if nothing else I hope you can recognize it's better than the average NaNoWriMo story probably is. For what it's worth though, I wasn't necessarily commenting on the prose itself (although for the most part I think it reads fine). I just think the story itself has come out well executed, far better than you'd normally expect from someone writing on the fly (albeit with planning). Normally that sort of thing is riddled with bad pacing and poor internal logic, y'know?

When I asked that question I spent a lot of time thinking about how the quest format/timescale of the writing might have affected that, and honestly I can't tell if it would help or hinder. Probably both. But I find it really interesting to think about how that stuff affects storytelling, and FQ's story is pretty solid, even if it's not perfect.

>Who were the 9 girls?
You'll have to wait and see~

>Could we have fucked them all this season if we had played our cards right?
It would be extremely difficult. This goes back to my own difficulty juggling all the various plot threads and characters.

At first, I was trying to keep us on track to hit 8/8 or 9/9 but as the episodes dragged on and we were moving so glacially, I started thinking about what the next season might hold, and I resigned myself to thinking that we wouldn't complete the counter in this season.

>Will Rose 2: Electric Boogaloo make a comeback?
Maybe! With the prom flashback, we know she exists in-universe.

>What was your favorite scene to write?
I touched on this already!

>Did we ever make an unexpected decision, or did you play us like a damn fiddle the entire time?

I've also touched on this already, but I'll add the vote that I took part in myself and got caught, was one I REALLY didn't want to see go the other way. The reason why is because it lead directly to fucking Vivian with Whitney's help, and I knew it was the only chance for that scenario to happen before the revelation that Whitney is her sister. I really wanted people to experience that, then the retroactive realization that it was incest.

>People have posted things in thread that were later referenced in quest, do you have a favorite?

Hard to say. I'll go back to Rose2 on this one. Her introduction in episode 11 was meant to be a one-off thing, to close the loop on the old story that we almost had someone else instead of Rose.

I expected people to hate her (especially in comparison to Rose -- the prospect that THIS is what could have been in her place all along)... I was very surprised to see she got a somewhat positive reception. That's why I decided to make her a "real" person within the universe of Fuck Quest. And if we see her again in some form... it will also be because of that.

>Did bringing those 2 guys with us into the break in even matter?

Yes and no. If Whitney had been with us, Marquis would not have become separated from us, and we would have seen Stasi in the finale too. It was never going to change the ultimate fate of Marquis though: I knew from episode 13 or so that Alex was going to end up beating him to death with his own bat. I really wanted to set that moment up.

>Is the number 421 itself important, and that's why we see it everywhere, or is there an event or idea related to 421, and that's what's important. For example, is 911 important because the number is important, or because of the attack on 9/11?

It's definitely important in the sense that it keeps popping up in crucial places, and I may or may not have some "ultimate" meaning to ascribe to it (stay tuned!) But the decision of it being 421 rather than some other number was arbitrary. It was just the Saturday I decided to premiere the show on. If 4/22 had fallen on Saturday this year instead, the big arc number of the season would be 422.

>Was there a chance to go beyond the 9/9?and 1/1?

Alabaster definitely won't fuck Stackleford. I'll say that right now.

But the counter definitely isn't capped - as we already saw this season when we went from a max of 8 to 9.

>What the fuck is Noelle's deal? How much of her interactions with us bullshit? Why did she let us go?
These are great questions to be asking, and we'll learn more in season 3.

>Did Darkbloom kill our parents? He said he killed Amber's under torture, but I don't think he ever technically admitted to killing ours.
I'm not gonna answer this one either. I will say that I fully intended there to be doubt and debate about it. We may learn the answer definitively, or I may decide to let ambiguity remain.

>If the 4 implants have the same hardware, could they theoretically be upgraded to have the full SR package?
Good question for season 3.

>What made you decide Whitney would be David and Renee's bastard?
You know, I'm not sure. But it makes so much sense to me in retrospect. I think it was just one of those flashes I tend to get, where my brain draws connections between story elements without my conscious thought.

I decided she was David's daughter well before I settled definitively on making her Renee's as well. (I vacillated on that right up to the night of the big reveal). However, I really REALLY wanted to do Whitney as CEO, and that's one thing I'm super excited about heading into the new season. It's going to be fun as shit, you guys.

>What were some of the best decisions we made, and the worst ones?
Taking Alex along to Cerise's was a great choice, as I said. Bad decisions... definitely pressing Alex and Sable so much when they considered Alabaster a saboteur.

>Will Alabaster say "I love you" to all his haremites next season, or will he keep being a fag about it?

>Is there anything you feel we've missed this season that we should have paid more attention to?

I don't think so. I'm sure there are little jokes and references you missed but most of the big things, I think you're all pretty astute about.

The finer details of the plot are still a little ambiguous, and there's one thing in particular I think you're all missing about the significance of Darkbloom's plan w/r/t Sand Reckoner, how Sand Reckoner differs from what came before, the debate between him and Sable etc. That's my fault though, because I intended him to have a longer speech in episode 11, and cut it off due to time + because I didn't want to bore. So that's something I consider to be an ongoing plot point which will clarify next season.

>You've made nods to the old plans for Season 2 this season, are they anything more than just a reference or two.
They're just references right now. Those characters do exist in-universe, and who knows, maybe they'll turn up in person somewhere. But no, I will not be introducing magic powers or biblical prophecy as plot points.

>What even the fuck happened in Episode 11 / Episode 1?
Sand Reckoner wasn't complete which is why Alabaster's experience was so fucked up. The complete Sand Reckoner can do much more. I want to say more than that, but as I said in the other answer, this is actually an ongoing plot point.

>What video did Darkbloom plan on showing the Senate?
Man, I had so much planned for the Senate testimony that I had to leave on the cutting room floor. The video wasn't anything like what you may have been expecting; it was just supposed to be deep fakes of the senators on the committee saying things like "I love to molest little kids!" and "Yes, I accept this bribe for $1 million" and so on. Something to shock and unsettle them, and prove it's possible to make a convincing fake video.
>>
>>2821536

I'm with you Anon.

Something in me refuses to accept that David was truly evil. He was certainly an asshole, and probably deserved to have some level of comeuppance for the sick shit he's done.

But the way he was tortured, blamed and killed for what happened in those labs just doesn't seem right to me, it feels like David was trying to help everyone more than harm them and I kinda wish we didn't kill him.

Maybe we can start our own faction, the #Daviddidnothingwrong group, or if evidence comes out to show he really did kill our parents, then we can go with the #Davidwasanokayguy tag.

>>2821561

Speaking of which, I have question OP, how did you feel about David's character, were you trying to get us to like him? Or were his acts of kindness always as fake as they seemed?

>What would have happened, broadly speaking, if we had let Stackleford die, beyond having once less waste of space in our life?

I fully intended him to die and in fact the only reason I offered it as a choice was because I needed to put a choice about SOMETHING up, since I had gone so long without a choice at that point. And because I did that, I had to make the choice actually MATTER, and since you decided to try to stop his death (surprising me), I had to make the attempt actually work.

Stackleford's death was supposed to be nothing more than an "oh shit" moment signalling that things have gotten really real. Stackleford was season 1's heel, representing all that was kind of wacky and madcap and comic about Fuck Quest. For him to die on his knees begging for mercy in the desert, represented to me the ultimate turn of the story from sex comedy to psychological thriller. (Not that both elements haven't always been present.) I planned that he would die from the first episode of the season -- early on, I intended it to be Camelia who killed him, but I didn't want to bring her so far into villainy that way. So it was delayed, and was ultimately supposed to be Stasi's big introduction as an enemy.

So the fact that he isn't dead now, frankly, is a fluke wrought by a spur of the moment whim to make his death an audience decision point; and now that he's alive, I need to slot him into something plot relevant for season 3.

>What was your favorite audience theory this season?
There was an anon trying to relate the story to Kabbala, and another describing how their Zodiacs/MBTIs line up so well, and that kind of fluffery always entertains me. I love crackpot theorizing like that because as I said, even where I don't intend something, the search for symbolism and meaning should never be constricted by what the author "intends." Seeing people dissect the story through the months has taught me about the story as well, and has informed my own decisions in so many ways.

Another theory I liked was that the universe of FQ2 was all a simulation (this was before episode 11 when people discussed it) -- this itself is an easy and cliche thing to theorize, but what I liked about it was the added idea that Mara's villainous nature was actually her attempt to rouse Darkbloom "awake." That one interested me too.

>What was the hardest scene for you to write, from just writer's block on getting the words out, to the subject matter being actually difficult to write?

I struggled between episodes 10 and 14 because I was trying to move things swiftly to an end point without sacrificing anything important. Much had to be cut to end things in a timely way. Episodes 7-12 all take place over the span of, like, a single weekend in-universe, and that was frankly unacceptable to me. That's why I really hit the accelerator at the end.

>If you could change some things about this season, from subplots, to delivery, to timing, what would they be?

Oh man. There's just too much to get into with that. I'm trying my hardest to press forward without looking back, but there was a lot I lost the opportunity to do that I really wanted to.

>What was your favorite supplemental material to make? For the one person who might care, mine was Whitney's test.

The test was a lot of fun! I also enjoyed the public release from Darkbloom Analytics with all the signatures on it. I spent about two hours signing dozens of printouts of that statement by hand, trying to perfect a signature in four different handwriting styles.

The /csg/ threads were also great. There's one I didn't get the time to edit and post in episode 14, unfortunately -- more Senate testimony stuff I left on the cutting room floor.

>What scene were you the most excited to write yourself, or to show the audience, if there was a difference?

For sure it was the final reveal of Whitney's true parentage. I was eagerly awaiting that for a long time. In terms of my excitement leading up to writing a scene I had planned, that stands out from all the rest.

>Is there anyone you wish you had spent more time on this season?

Gal, Vivian, and Kay. They all got the shaft (and not in the good way). Kay in particular -- and this goes back to my discussion about audience choices. Our decision not to talk to her early on when she first reaches out to us in the parking garage really surprised me. That decision relegated her to the back burner for a long time and I never found a good way to bring her fully to the fore. If not for that choice, this season would have featured much more Kay.

No, it wasn't. It's the old rule of thumb for authors: if you describe a character's plan in detail, it has to go wrong somehow.

But seriously: the real decision was whether or not we would TRY to blow it up, or align with Darkbloom. Because Alabaster's existence hinges on those servers, I could never allow the plan to actually go through.

I'm not gonna dump all the OC I've made from this series cuz it's all out there and :effort:, but I will post this from yesterday. I started making it the second Ally blamed Marquis for things going pear-shaped, but within like a minute another post went up where Ally blamed himself for the same, lol.

In retrospect I should have posted it, and then ended up doing another with Alex and Marquis saying "How could Stasi do this," but ah well, couldn't have known.

>1. I've seen occasional mentions from others about you doing other quests. Were there other quests between FQ1 and FQ2?

Battle Royale Quest, presaging the surge in interest in battle royale games, and really quite fun to write. I loved the desert setting. Unfortunately I dropped it after 3 threads due to my own laziness and struggling with the time demands of my new job out of college.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Battle%20Royale

>2. This is one you can flat out ignore because it kinda borders on "too personal" but I need to get this out there: Do you have anything else you've written?

I appreciate your understanding, but yes, I'll have to keep that a secret. After Fuck Quest is all said and done there are projects I want to do which I will not want associated with this -- sorry.

>3. What are some of your influences?
>3b. Do you have a reading list?

One HUGE influence for me is pic related, one of my favorite novels. I didn't realize until very late into the season, but Camelia's character has strong parallels with the character I-330.

If you read it, I must recommend the Ginsburg translation, which is by far the best available. You can actually find it online: https://libcom.org/library/we-yevgeny-zamyatin

Note that a formatting error in the link above renders the square root character as a V so when reference is made to "V-1" it's actually talking about the square root of negative 1. That's an important moment in the story, so I thought I'd clarify.

Another big influence is postmodern literature in the encyclopedic style of Pynchon and David Foster Wallace. Stories with multi-layered symbolism, ambiguous plots, huge casts of weird characters, etc. If you ever read a book like Infinite Jest, you'll see how much I've cribbed from this type of storytelling.

>4. I've listened to albums from Milli, DAOKO, Cibo Matto, and St. Vincent since FQ2 began. Do you mind hitting me with some more albums? Doesn't even have to be FQ related.

Start with Wednesday Campanella. The song "Little Match Girl" is going to be Galatea's season 3 theme.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuuUfP4uJEk

However, that song is different from Wednesday Campanella's usual sound. Some other excellent songs by the same artist...
"Jeanne D'Arc" is a fucking banger of a track, and one of my favorite music videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syLz1rcTKD8
"Melos" is also an excellent video and song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qPSHOTzidw
"Momotaro" is her most famous video and you may have seen it before, also a banger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVPgxn3xohM

As for other artists... the characters will all have their own themes so you may see some more. I intend to fill some of the interim with character cards like before, plus theme songs.

(okay, don't add this to the playlist, but if Fuck Quest was a 90s romcom, "One Week" would definitely be the theme song for Ally and Rose. The lyrics are WAY too on point.)

>5. Did you have a general theme in mind you wanted to convey going into FQ2? Or to put it another way, did you have any goals in mind aside from major story plot points you wanted to achieve?
>5b. Did you accomplish those goals/convey those messages?

There were a couple things, but the overarching idea I wanted to tackle was the fractured perception of objective truth and what is "real" that seems to be gripping western society today.

That's a pretty pretentious way to put it, but that was really the main impetus behind revisiting Fuck Quest. I thought it was an interesting prism through which to explore my own feelings about it. We'll see the echoes of this throughout the next season, and this is another thing I wanted to harp on during the Senate testimony but couldn't; what Darkbloom has inadvertently done with Sand Reckoner is remove some very foundational things from the world's ability to "know" what is true. By claiming the video of the operation on Camelia was a fake, and then proving that it in fact could plausibly be a fake -- he did the exact OPPOSITE of what he wanted to acheive -- he completely destroyed faith in the idea of a knowable reality.

It's not as cynical as all that, though. Another aspect of this comes up with Alabaster and Rose. While I genuinely don't play favorites with the girls in the sense that I don't like one more than another and wouldn't choose one over another personally, Rose has been my favorite to write for (barely edging out Whitney, who was my favorite to write for in season 1). The reason is because I had this concept of Rose and Alabaster very obviously representing two sides of the cultural divide these days but nonetheless loving each other deeply. It was a lot of fun to play with and hint at.

Of course their relationship is completely twisted and they're both reprehensible people who you would never want to know in real life, but to me that relationship represents, in the grotesque and absurd way that all things in Fuck Quest are grotesque and absurd, the idea of reconciliation. In my heart of hearts I do think it is possible.

As far as how much of that I accomplished... it's part of my dissatisfaction overall. I didn't cover half the things I wanted to.

That was my absolute favourite lewd scene so thanks for shoehorning it in.

I'm also going to (sadly) extract from the last two comments that she is really dead. You could have left the sex scene it to next season and if you'd intended to possibly kill her in

I suppose she could show up due to Sand Reckoner, but I don't think that's likely as I figured her showing up previously was due to her implant.

I really like the mystery around Camelia even if I'm making it up myself.

Things like that always make me think about the opening chapter to Cyberia where Rushkoff is talking about the early San Fran rave culture that modern Silicon Valley emerged out of. He said something to the effect that there was a conclusion that reality itself was up for grabs, or that they believed themselves capable of dreaming up their own reality.

Good stuff.

I'm sad now more wasn't made of the Senate testimony. Although I got the contradiction in Darkbloom's actions from the testimonial I think Kay posted, that would have driven the point home more. It further brings into question what his idea of reality really was, seeing as he was willing to sacrifice objective truth to get there.

Thanks for taking the time to answer all the questions!

How bad would you have let things get? If we kept making shitty decisions, how much rope would you have let us had to hang ourselves with?

Do you put as much effort into Vasily, Tyrus, Mara and Armstrong as you did for David Darkbloom? Are they intended to be as deep or are they mostly written to get the appropiate emotional response for the audience?

Overall, how did we come out relationship wise from this season? Were you expecting worse or better relationships with the various characters? How would a Darkbloom ending be as game breaking as the Carmelia ending, considering that the industries couldn't have been destroyed, Carmelia would possibly be dead or at least crippled and nothing would be stopping SR from reaching mass production?

Have we encountered all of the main antagonists yet or are there still others to deal with?

Will you be adding in more harem members between seasons or will the cast be mostly the same from season 2 to 3?

In your opinion, what was the worst choice that could have happened this season? What was the best choice?

FQ1 will always have a special place in my heart for having such an impact on my life. It's one of the major catalysts that inspired me to reconcile with my family and friends and try to be more empathetic and accountable (I didn't fuck them, sorry to disappoint).

However, if I'm being honest with myself, FQ2 is just better overall. The lewds are bolder, the characters are far less one-dimensional, the villains are far more compelling and HUMAN, and the story feels like it has an actual sense of direction than just aimless meandering.

There were episodes during the Palau arc where I was actually losing interest because everything had sort of settled into a kind of routine. By the time OP nix'd it, I was definitely sad, but I was also feeling a little burnt out with it as well.

I don't feel any of that with the end of S2. I feel satisfied with what we got, and excited for what's to come.

Oof. When I said I recommend "pic related," I meant to post this.

Also, to my own shame, when I quoted the book during Episode 14, I got it slightly wrong. Nelson puts it as "the known is finished" but the actual line from I-330 (the character I said had so many parallels to Camelia) is "everything known is finished."

>"And tomorrow ..." she breathed greedily through gleaming, clenched, sharp teeth. "No one knows what tomorrow will be. Do you understand— I do not know, no one knows—tomorrow is the unknown! Do you understand that everything known is finished? Now all things will be new, unprecedented, inconceivable."

>6. FQ2 was absolutely littered with easter eggs, references, and just tiny little details. How many of them did we pick up on?
>6b. What did we miss?

I would say you caught a majority of them -- I'm struggling to think of one off the top of my head that slipped past you all, although I know there were some. Or rather, there were some that went uncommented on, but I'm sure some of those at least a few of you understood even if you said nothing.

Maybe one that sticks out is that I changed Rose's mother's first name from Sara (which is what she was named in Season 1) to Charlotte. Charlotte is of course a deliberate reference to Madoka Magica.

>7. Your dedication is incredible. How do work up the motivation to continue writing?

The main thing motivating me is that I simply want to keep the story going. That said, I've had nights where, if I were writing on my own, I would have turned in. But knowing there are people waiting live for me to continue forces me to bring every writing session to some sort of conclusion before stopping for the night. The pressure of needing to deliver has made me much more productive in that sense, because procrastination becomes impossible. I have to keep moving.

But I find it's rather a lot like cardio, which I picked up in the last few years. It takes a deliberate expenditure of energy and effort to get started, but once I'm running, I rather enjoy it.

>Did you come up with the characters first and fit their anime avatars to them or were the FQ characters somehow inspired by the anime characters?

I came up with characters first then found suitable avatars for them. For example, I conceived of Cerise as being a pseudo-slutty onee-sama, then went trawling through my random /a/ image folder trying to find a character who might be a good avatar for that; pic related is what I hit upon. (This was when I intended avatars to be inconsistent and not necessarily tied to a single existing character from anime.)

That being said, once I settled on avatars for a certain character in Fuck Quest, that avatar then informed more of their personality. From something as simple as Cerise's penchant for wearing chokers, to more important aspects like Rose's seemingly contradictory affinity for guns.

>What came first: The idea to have VR/AR-type technology as a major plot point this season or wanting a way to explain S1?

I don't think I've fully illuminated how season 2 connects to season 1 -- or at least not in a way that everyone understands. I do think if you reread Episode 11, what David says before and after the VR nightmare, you can get the main idea though.

Anyway, the concept of Darkbloom working on VR as the main application of Sand Reckoner came to me later in the season and yes, closing the loop on season 1 was a huge motivating factor for that. I wanted, and still want, everything tied off with a neat little bow by the time I'm done (betraying my own obscurantist authorial influences here). At first when I planned season 2, Darkbloom's motivation was a lot more provincial, Sand Reckoner was going to be a project never meant to go public, but rather be shilled to politicians and military-industrial complex types who could use at-a-glance comprehensive data on people to further their agendas. The idea being that, if the project ever leaked, it would cause an uproar among the general public who felt it an invasion of their privacy.

>Would you have been prepared to kill Stackleford?

I talked about this already, but yes. I was not only prepared to; I wanted to.

>I know you'll be wanting to concentrate on S3 now, but is a VN something you've considered writing? Doesn't even have to be FQ related, I wonder if that's a direction you could see your writing going.

There's a certain VN project that I want to do after I'm finished with FQ. It's something 100% different from everything Fuck Quest is. But it'll be a while before I can focus on it.

I have a highly negative view of people like Zuckerberg, Thiel, Bezos, Musk and so on, and have for many years now. Beyond that, the whole culture around Silicon Valley fascinates but repels me, and as I said the genesis of this season was extremely topical (recent scandals around breaches of privacy and the blithe response tech companies had to it).

There's not much interesting I can say that hasn't been said by smarter people, about the egotism and venality that is turning the future of technology into, ultimately, a perversion of human potential, as well as foundationally harming our ability to interact with each other in healthy ways.

I look at things like "deep fakes" which are real and becoming more convincing everyday, and I suppose I understand the drive to develop them from an information-war arms-race perspective, but I'm nonetheless reminded of Patton Oswalt's old standup bit where he mimics scientists doing horrible shit for no good reason: "hey guys, we made cancer airborne and contagious! You're welcome. We're science."

That's not even getting into how Silicon Valley has hugely propagated the "gig economy" and made 24/7 hustling a necessary way of life for huge sectors of the population, or how the really giant companies have betrayed the old ethos ("don't be evil" anyone?) to exploit workers and end-users, and willingly trample over individuals in other ways.

But I'm droning on. It is not ultimately so tragic I think because I am trying to drive home that people can still WAKE UP.

>-Why did Ally's parents die?
Definitely won't answer that right now, per my earlier response!

>-What events motivated Darkbloom to make Sand Reckoner?
I think he genuinely had a savior complex. He walked a path of moral turpitude with the idea that he HAD to do these terrible things to deliver the human race from suffering. I think his speeches in season 2 talking about that were genuine.

By the same token, he was gripped by the need for power and control, and in his ideal world, he alone held the keys to the kingdom. When he was reduced to begging for his life, when all was stripped away, his final appeal to Camelia was not that they could make the world a better place, not that they could do good things for people, but that she could be the "dauphine" of a new world order.

He was a megalomaniac who fancied the idea of becoming a benevolent dictator.

I mentioned this very briefly in supplemental material but Darkbloom is the son of a coal miner. He grew up in poverty and squalor in Appalachia. That kind of upbringing made him constantly strive and climb, to prove that he was better than that, but in his heart, he always sort of felt like a country bumpkin, I think. (I wanted to do a scene where he suddenly slips into a thick southern accent, catches himself, and goes back to his affected west coast dialect.)

As for the trajectory of his life, since that's not clearly spelled out either, I'll let you in on it:

Son of coal miner -> college scholarship -> doctorate in computer science -> professorship at Johns Hopkins -> friendship with Gustav, development of the initial concept of Sand Reckoner -> (at some point he meets Renee) -> weds Mara to get cash flow -> silicon valley startup based on credit card processing/e-pay -> pivot towards big data -> development of the Darkbloom Analytics we know in the present day.

>9. If it's at all possible, could you explain the reasoning behind why you chose the OPs, EDs, and Character Themes you did?
>9b. Are there any Character themes you wanted to show off but didn't get the chance to present?

world.execute(me); was a song I already loved. When I was planning Season 2, I wanted to find a good OP, and that popped into my head. I listened to it on Youtube to see how it fit, and I found fit extraordinarily well. The "recommended" bar on Youtube suggested "Camelia" next up, which was a new song by Mili that I had never heard. It struck me immediately as perfect too, so much so that I literally named Camelia after the song -- this was when I had the concept of her character but no name selected.

The first character I selected a theme for was Vivian, which was also a song I loved well before FQ2. I did that on a whim when I posted her character card.

Only once I had done that for Vivian, I decided to try to do it for the others. Ultimately I kept coming back to Mili because so many of their songs were eerily on point. I think if you look up the lyrics for any of the character themes I called out, you can see self evidently why I chose that song -- I always picked songs with relevant lyrics foremost.

There are character themes I never got around to yes but I will go into that in season 3!

>What happened at the end?

Cerise now has the complete Sand Reckoner package inside of her skull (the Penelope implant loaded with the Project Ulysses platform developed primarily by Sable). It was installed by Galatea at Cerise's behest because it was the only way to retrieve Camelia's PGP key and defuse the dead man's switch on the bombs underneath Darkbloom Analytics. Unfortunately, the installation had at least as disastrous an effect on Cerise as the operation on Camelia did as a child. Cerise "sees everything" and it's fucking up her brain.

That's the long and short of it. The flashback that capped the season was definitely not an arbitrary decision either.

This is hard to say. I toyed with letting haremites die at a couple intervals but definitely by the time I settled on extending it into another season, I didn't want the body count to get too high.

It did fuck with Rose quite a lot at first if you remember, and she only snapped back to normal because things were moving so fast and she had to.

That being said, Rose is -- despite her gentle, caring facade -- ultimately a coldly pragmatic and extremely self-centered person (or perhaps self-centered in the sense that there are a handful people she cares about, and everyone else can go jump off a bridge). She isn't a sociopath, taking human life is extremely difficult for her and I'm sure she's still working internally through some of those psychological consequences. But it's much easier for her, than it is for many people, to soothe herself with the knowledge that it was truly self defense and she was killing to protect people she cared about.

We definitely could have moved closer to Darkbloom and aligned with him in the end. I didn't expect you to and had no plan for what it would look like, but that was true of a lot of decisions you made and forced me to realign my plans for. I was prepared for the prospect that you might side with him; I wrote Darkbloom sympathetically, purposely to make it a possibility. It wasn't like some obviously evil psychopath asking you to murder puppies with him. He had an argument to make.

>4. In what ways are your characters designed in your head? For example did Rose always have huge boobs or was that decided when Mami was chosen as her avatar

Answered a similar question already, but as I said, even though characters were conceived first, aspects of their chosen avatars bled in. Mami's huge boobs definitely gave Rose her honkers.

>In the VR Fuck Quest sequence why does Camelia show up? Was is because of how she's connected to the servers? Was the glitching out just because we were freaking out and going against what had happened before? How long could we have stayed in the simulation?

Camelia's presence definitely is connected to her link with Darkbloom's servers, combined with her link to Alabaster that existed already.

It was also meant to give away the entire twist that Cerise would eventually become Sand Reckoner. At the end of the simulation, Camelia flickers in and out over the simulation of Cerise. And Cerise, in the simulation, directly says that she is Sand Reckoner.

https://archived.moe/qst/thread/2730761/#2731485

As for how long we could stay in the simulation, I intended to do at least the entire first episode but it was beginning to drag.

>Is Rose 2 existing and having the last name Catachresis plot relevant or just a red herring/reference?

Rose2 was initially meant to be 100% part of the simulation in Episode 11 (i.e. not a real person). She was some glitched perversion of Rose. But when I decided to make her real, why did I give her that last name? I guess that's a good question to keep in mind.

>Do you think you would ever add a trans character to FQ?

I'm not inherently opposed to the idea, I suppose it hinges on whether I have a good concept. I don't make a character gay or straight, trans- or cis-, or anything else because I specifically decide on those qualities beforehand, I just roll with whatever seems to fit the moment and the character called for by that moment.

There isn't a trans character right now (Alex is a boy! He likes being a boy! Why are you looking at him like that? Why are you holding that dress???) but I wouldn't ever bar the possibility.

>It seems pretty clear that you wanted to humanize Darkbloom before he met his end, make him a more sympathetic character, was this so we would have a more conflicted feeling about seeing him go, or about making Vivian's anger at his killing feel more understandable?

Both. And more: I wanted the path of allying with him to be a plausible option. Beyond these plot-centered reasons, I also just wanted a villain who wasn't obviously a villain.

I'll step in personally here with my opinion, with the caveat that the author's opinion is worth no more than anyone else's, but I really don't like Darkbloom and I think he's a shitty person. Just what he did to Renee, which we've kind of glossed over, from impregnating her at the age of 16(!!) to forcing her child into adoption, and then letting her go to prison for life for crimes she didn't commit(!!!) -- that just absolutely tarnishes any claims he makes, in my mind, about being justified. He's not above his own baser self, his own desires, and those desires manifest in some very despicable ways throughout.

Having said that, it's not an accident that David's personality is... complicated... and therefore people are naturally conflicted about what they think of him. I set myself a huge task with FQ2, to take this character who was just cartoonishly evil and who everyone hated/feared in season 1, and by the end of it, make him so relatable that you think twice before deciding he's the bad guy. It seems like I accomplished that!

I kind of want. She could be Whitney's long lost twin sister who was sent to David's hometown and is actually a genius. Contrary to Whitney's nymphomania, she would a super pure and innocent country bumpkin. Whitney-oneechan would then teach her the ways of the cock (but at that point we already have Vivian for the little sister role; perhaps if we ever get back on Vivian's good side, she would be jealous of the twin which could lead to super interesting situations).

>Any books on writing you recommend OP? (both storycraft and prose)

The only book on writing I myself have ever read is Stephen King's "On Writing," which is one of the bog standard recommendations. It's good, it teaches you a lot of basics.

But I generally avoid the cottage industry of writing tutorials and books because I think the better way is to, as Nabokov once said, "read with a felonious mind." In other words, I read books, and take what I think works well from other authors.

This is incidentally why I also avoid communities of novice writers offering critique, because most of them are really big into those MFA, Writing 101 concepts that generally hammer home basic precepts like "show, don't tell" and "avoid adverbs" and so on. These tend to be taken as etched-in-stone commandments by novices who don't understand when it is appropriate to break them. So instead of getting deep crit, you get "you used an adverb in this paragraph, you're never supposed to do that!"

I just looked up the quote I attributed to Nabokov, and it turns out it comes from a book on how to write, NOT Nabokov. Whoops!

That book, which I can also recommend, is "Woe is I" -- and it won't teach you how to craft a story, but it does give you some nice nuts and bolts for how to navigate grammar. I've skimmed it, and it didn't teach me a whole lot I didn't know, but it's a good rec for anyone who ever felt baffled by the weird intricacies of English. That's useful for way more than writing fiction.

I guess that one quote stuck with me and my dumb brain decided it must have come from someone I admire more than Suzie Q. Grammanazi.

>Did Season 1 actually canonically happen within its own timeline, or was it all an elaborate Sand Reckoner simulation?

The key to answering this is what Darkbloom says in episode 11.

---

"You're familiar with Plato's allegory of the cave, right?" He says.

"Yeah. That was definitely some allegory of the cave bullshit right there."

"What if it wasn't?" Darkbloom says. "I don't know what exactly you saw, but..."

He returns to his spot at the window, basking in the sunlight. He thinks for a long moment.

"If you believe in free will," he says, "you must - you have to know that every choice creates a new reality. Every choice is a reckoning. Why is our reckoning any more real than any other possible reckoning? It's no more accurate to say our reality is the true one than it would be to say that 2+2=4 is truer than 3+2=5. And if we knew everything... if we knew it all... we could find the most optimal reckonings. That's all I want."

>How bad would you have let things get? If we kept making shitty decisions, how much rope would you have let us had to hang ourselves with?

I've touched on this here and there, we did avoid some terrible outcomes, and in other instances made things worse. As I've said before, the only option that I have a hard time seeing as possible is Alabaster himself dying. But you never know.

>Do you put as much effort into Vasily, Tyrus, Mara and Armstrong as you did for David Darkbloom? Are they intended to be as deep or are they mostly written to get the appropiate emotional response for the audience?

I would like them to be a little more humanized (well, not Vasily, RIP). Tyrus in particular, I think has interesting backstory, he's another person who grew in meager circumstances and constantly strives because of it, like Darkbloom. It's also clear that he loved his husband, and the ramifications of that death will echo in season 3.

Mara is more difficult to talk about in detail because as you may guess, she will be a HUGE factor in season 3.

>Overall, how did we come out relationship wise from this season? Were you expecting worse or better relationships with the various characters? How would a Darkbloom ending be as game breaking as the Carmelia ending[...]?

As I've said, I really don't know how I would approach a Darkbloom route -- it would be exciting, but radically different from what I envisioned. As far as how relationships panned out, I did not expect things to deteriorate as badly as they did with Alex and Sable (and you kept making it worse!) but in retrospect it makes sense. Things really split along factional lines at the end, and I knew it would be impossible to appease everyone. Eventually you had to make a decision, you had to stop playing both sides; and that inevitably harmed relationships.

>Have we encountered all of the main antagonists yet or are there still others to deal with?

Hmm. I'm not sure if I should answer this.

>Will you be adding in more harem members between seasons or will the cast be mostly the same from season 2 to 3?

Stay tuned.

>In your opinion, what was the worst choice that could have happened this season? What was the best choice?

Worst -- possibly allying with Darkbloom, at least from a story perspective, because I would have ended up trying to asspull a season finale from nothing, and it may have been unsatisfying. (So not worst possible choice in terms of actual story ramifications, but story quality.)

Worst in terms of consequence, some of the early choices could have led to much darker outcomes, like brushing off Kay again when she wanted to warn us about Renee/the desert plot etc... or actually, trying to hide Camelia's blackmail plot from Cerise and Rose (I planned whole episodes of hiding the blackmail from them, then the subsequent sting of betrayal they feel when it comes out).

Best... all of the choices that led to sex, naturally. (You sure made a lot of Best choices!)

>>what Darkbloom has inadvertently done with Sand Reckoner is remove some very foundational things from the world's ability to "know" what is true. By claiming the video of the operation on Camelia was a fake, and then proving that it in fact could plausibly be a fake -- he did the exact OPPOSITE of what he wanted to acheive -- he completely destroyed faith in the idea of a knowable reality.
>Did Darkbloom realize that this is what he had done, before he died? Or did he, in his Hubris, believe that this was just another minor setback and that he could unfuck the situation he created for himself?

I don't know. I don't think he saw it, though. In his mind, this was just another necessary detour on the march to achieving his goals. He still believed he would be vindicated; that eventually the public would see the value of what he was trying to do, and hail him as a visionary, a hero, a savior.

Darkbloom had a peculiar view of reality that in a certain sense denies the objectively knowable material world (or at least postulates that other constructions of the universe are equally real) so while he strived for "perfect knowledge" he may not have seen his deep-fake excuse as inherently contradictory or harmful to his cause.

>If Mrs Soliloquy had survived up to the events of FQ2, would she had been as big of an incestuous degenerate as she was in FQ1? Or was that just Alabaster's magic Jizz encouraging her thirst for her son's dick?

If Kaa-san had been alive, she probably would have been part of the counter, so in that sense she would have to be such a degenerate. But at that point we're talking about a radically different reality to the one that FQ2 takes place in.

To me, in this universe, it makes sense for Cerise and Alabaster to be so incestuous because they were so traumatized by their parents' deaths -- they came to depend on each other in what would be considered, in real life, quite unhealthy ways. For Alabaster and Rose, who are cousins (once removed!) it makes sense because they met later in life and sexual attraction to estranged family members is a well documented phenomenon; ditto for Whitney and Vivian.

For Kaa-san, in this universe which is a little more "realistic" than FQ1, I would have a hard time explaining why an otherwise well-adjusted woman would jump into bed with her son. But I guess I could handwave it away with the excuse that Soliloquys are just horny degenerates by nature.

>Do you like villains like that the most OP? Those who come from little and, through skill and will, ascend to power's pinnacle? Will there be more antagonist variety next season? Will there ever be an antagonist lewd or lewds outside of the harem?

I enjoy villains like that but I think it's just happenstance that Darkbloom and Tyrus share the same sort of character arc. They differ in a lot of ways too. Tyrus isn't a megalomaniac and he has no aspirations about changing the course of history. He's a more garden-variety criminal boss.

For antagonist variety, I think it's clear where the general conflicts are gonna be next season, but I have some surprises to spring too.

Antagonist lewds? Who knows. Maybe Mara can show us the joy of erotic asphyxiation. (Nothing dangerous.)

>Is there anyone in season 1 who does not fall into the faction box besides Whitney/Cerise/Rose or are there always 3 Darkbloom, 3 Rebellion, 3 Solioquey?

I wouldn't say that. Kay for example was sort of a "free agent" -- she helped us at points, but that was to get closer to the story. Other characters might have changed allegiances depending on how events unfolded, although I don't necessarily see what might precipitate it, off the top of my head. However I don't think it would have ever been possible to move Vivian against her father, or Camelia to his side. I also don't believe that Whitney, Cerise, or Rose would ever have chosen a different side from Alabaster. Maybe if we REALLY fucked up somehow, but... that would be pretty monumental.

>Would you take away an of the existing harem members for any particular reason, like moving or such?

I don't see myself writing out a haremite for such a mundane reason. If one leaves the cast it will be for something very plot relevant -- a death, or being forced into witness protection, or something like that.

>Would Kay have died if we did that? Is that why you weighted that choice much harder than you did the first time?

I'm not sure of that. What I meant is that we'd never have found out about the buried implant, the fact that Noelle is a fed, the involvement of the Russian mob, etc... so many things would begin blindsiding us... while at the same time, Camelia's revenge plot would begin to wear increasingly thin for want of a motive to continue working with her... and all of that, while I can't foresee precisely what it would lead to, would have created a really difficult situation.

>10. Which characters from FQ1 changed the MOST as you ported them over to FQ2 and how?
>10b. Which characters from FQ1 changed the LEAST and do you regret it at all?

Most: perhaps Rose or Vivian.

Rose is definitely a lot more fleshed out (she's a very fleshy girl!) and I think a lot more interesting in this go-around. She definitely benefited the most from the transition. I found her so interesting to explore and write for that she took an even bigger role than I anticipated, and I anticipated that she would be a major character.

Actually, you can thank Rose for FQ2 existing. When I was discussing rebooting the quest with Hexer, he floated exploring this plot in an entirely new setting -- no association to FQ and its characters. I was warm to this and we started going through each of the FQ characters (including the new ones), deciding whether they should have any parallel characters in the new series. "The sister," "the childhood friend," "the reporter," "the radical," "the hacker," "the megacorp CEO's daughter" etc...

Then we got to Rose. Hexer was of the opinion that Rose or a Rose expy would really serve no purpose in the plot I laid out to him about hacking, political scandal, silicon valley hubris and tech gone mad. In other words, he said, cut her.

When I thought about the prospect of not including her or a similarly constructed character at all, I really didn't like it. I saw a clear role for someone like Rose in the story, even if I didn't use FQ characters. And since I was thinking along those lines, I finally said: why would I do this as a separate setting, if I would just end up porting versions of these characters over with slight alterations?

That was a huge tangent.

Vivian: her gloomy personality and penchant for $20 vocab words is the the same, but I think it's pretty obvious that she isn't the traumatized little girl she was in FQ1. Or at least she wasn't. She had a quite close relationship with her father, which humanized the both of them, and that was interesting to touch on (for the brief time I had to -- I would have loved to explore more of Vivian and Darkbloom's comparatively normal, heartwarming father-daughter bond. Their characters are both kinda weird, brainy, over-articulating, aloof, etc... so they don't interact the way most fathers and daughters do... but they expressed much more emotion with each other than they were ever comfortable doing with others. They meant the world to each other.)

Alabaster and Cerise obviously changed a lot, too. They are much less harsh towards each other, and even towards others, and that stems directly from losing their parents. As much as I loved their no-holds-barred sparring in the original, it just didn't make any sense given what they've been through (especially now that we know they covered up a murder together).

As for characters who didn't change as much? That's easy: Whitney. Do I regret it? Why would I regret not changing perfection?

>Did you plan for such a match up to happen between the two?
>11b. Did you have any other "match ups" that you really wanted to show us but couldn't?

That matchup was definitely plan. I wrote the final interaction between Whitney and Mara back around episode 13 or so.

Other matchups... I wanted a scene after the events of the finale where Tyrus browbeats Alex about what exactly happened in the server room. I pictured that over the course of this ad-hoc interrogation, we'd see Alex transition from flighty and scared to something maybe a little more mercenary, cold. I'm not sure if I'm getting it across properly -- but you'd see in real time that Alex is changed by his experience of killing.

I would have liked to do something between Gal and Darkbloom, too -- but it's hard ot get Gal out of her apartment! Tyrus and Mara, or Tyrus and Stasi is another one, but we'll definitely get another crack at that.

For intra-harem interactions, we saw much less of Rose-Cerise, Rose-Whitney, and Whitney-Cerise than I would have liked. All three combos have interesting dynamics. Camelia also didn't interact as much with the harem as I wanted her to.

Overall, I agree that I love seeing characters interact with each other and not Alabaster. I want to do more of them in the new season. And I wish I had the chance to engineer more of these scenarios in season 2 because they're a joy to write. (That's part of the reason I played so much with the usual structure of the writing, providing flashbacks and story sequences where Alabaster isn't even present... part of the difficulty in creating these scenarios is how closely we're tethered to Alabaster's POV.)

Now this may be too personal a question, so I don't mind if you skip it: It's no secret that you've used FQ to introduce your relatively niche fetishes to your readers. I actually don't mind Subway personally, although on the rare occasion I eat there it's always "fuck it, I guess Subway's close." I just like shitting on Subway to carry on the legacy of Renee, whose obsession with sub sandwiches precluded her from liking such a pleb establishment.

>8. Does Rose have a favorite model of gun?

I would have to do some research on guns to properly answer this question, because I picture Rose as being well-versed in gun culture, and I am not. (If any /k/ommandos are here and have any ideas, I'm open to suggestions.)

That being said, Rose takes after her avatar and appreciates the boom of a shotgun over pistols (although she's a good markswoman with small arms). I think her preference would be some type of shotgun first, then a good semi-auto pistol, and rifles only if nothing else is available.

I imagine she spent many weekends of her youth like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f8VmJRuBFY

>Since we'll never get any interactions with Vasily now, did you have angle for Mara and Vasily as a dark reflection of Cerise and Alabaster's relationship?

I did consider this. Actually, right up until I wrote the final episode I wanted to keep Vasily alive into season 3 as another antagonist, and we would have definitely seen more of him, including fleshing out his relationship with his sister. But I needed some semi-major deaths for the finale; Vasily was there, and he was easy to kill off.

We may still learn more about him, as Mara will definitely want to avenge his death. I don't know what their relationship was like though: incestuous? Regular brother and sister? Coldly professional? It's something I'll ponder myself in the interim. No matter what, Mara is NOT happy that he's gone.

/k/ommando reporting, if the Mallorys are old money blue-blood hunting types then she might lean heavily towards well-regarded classic designs like the Winchester Model 12 or Ithaca 37 while she would look upon newer, more affordable Remingtons and Mossbergs with disdain. If she was more strictly into trap/skeet/sporting clays (muh animal rights) she'd have a five-figure bespoke over/under double barrel made to her exact measurements by any one of a dozen Italian boutique manufacturers, though this would have some disadvantages when it comes to engaging bipeds instead of clays.
>>
>>2827103

I imagine for a shotgun Rose would like something reliable and trusty above all, probably a Remington 870, most likely the 870 mk1 just because she wants to have the longer magazine.

As for hand guns, she'd probably be more discerning just because of the huge variety and differences, but she'd probably like a Cz75. Just as reliable as a 1911 or Hi Power, but a bit more niche and unique and with less of a legacy of killing natives. She would likely have disdain for any "plastic princess" pistols like Glocks.

She probably also acknowledges the stopping power that .45 has, but given her absolutely tiny frame, prefers using 9mm because it's easier to hit what she's aiming at (but she would never let anyone know this and probably tries to come across as tough by saying that a 9mm to the head drops someone as easy as a .45 to the head does.)
>>
>>2827402
I don't think the Mallorys are into hunting (certainly not Rose).

The idea behind Saul and Rose both being proficient with guns is that Saul is a big civil libertarian who goes hard on constitutional law (he has done lots of work with the ACLU, for examples). They keep guns nominally for home- and self-defense, but I think it's more of a status symbol or a statement for Saul, to own several firearms, just because the constitution says he can.

So to whatever extent he and his daughter have actually used their guns in the past, it would limited to firing ranges.

Thanks for answering. Changing Darkbloom's motivation was a good call. It brings him from a 90s children's movie greedy businessman stereotype to something a lot more sophisticated and contemporary.

I work for a company somewhat on the edges of Silicon Valley culture and I hate it whenever I put any thought into it. OP, every time I think about Camelia and her personality and motivations and everything, I feel this fire inside me. Like she ignites a desire to dismantle the establishment from the top down, but not in the gay way those Antifags do it. They’re useless and unprincipled, stupid, racist motherfuckers with no real motivations besides a selfish desire to make themselves feel superior to everyone else.

It’s a selfishness with no end goal, but while Camelia’s purpose was a selfish one in a way, it was to actually try and end a problem plaguing her for her entire life that she knew would eventually come to oppress everyone regardless of their beliefs. And she got that shit done with passion and conviction, by any means she had available, and if she had no means she fucking made them.

She's definitely the best girl for the job. By the nature of the plot I've set up, we'll see more Whitney in the next season, but there should be lots of room for the other girls to express their own roles too. Whitney is bringing everyone along for the ride!

I'm glad the story I told was resonant with you. We'll see more Silicon Valley culture stuff in season 3 as well, I think. This season we were entirely focused on one company, but in season 3, Whitney's gonna have to work to salvage the company's reputation and that will involve others.

Assuming all of the implants were linked to Darkbloom in the same or similar way, was he using Camelia as a way to watch over Whitney through us? Is that why he thought of us and our family members as trustworthy enough to cary on his legacy should anything happen to Whitney? Even further, was Whitney attending the same school as and meeting Alabaster orchestrated by David because he knew we’d keep her safe?

If so, that makes everything that much more heartbreaking.

>2. What crazyhouse do I have to go to for a girl like her?
Just go back in time and find an old-school anarchist of the Emma Goldman "propaganda of the deed" variety.

I've always been fascinated with Presidential history, and the stories of the two forgotten assassinations - Garfield and McKinley - are especially gripping. Garfield was killed by a pants-on-head crazy idiot named Charles Guiteau, who gets a homage in Sable's character. McKinley was killed by a slightly less pants-on-head crazy NEET-slash-proto-/r9k/-poster named Leon Czolgosz, who was influenced by early 20th century anarchists (although even they had rejected him from their social circles).

In reading about the history of that I also picked up on a lot of the history of anarchism through osmosis and although I consider Camelia ultimately apolitical (in the sense that she doesn't care about the left-right divide or have a vision for what society should look like beyond destroying the primacy of Big Data and technological privacy-snooping), she definitely looks a lot like those early 20th century radical bomb throwers who put the world into a lot of turmoil back then.

Alabaster and Galatea were not linked to Darkbloom the way Camelia was. What goes unstated at the end of the season is Darkbloom had an implant too, and it had the same package that Camelia's implant has. The fact that both implants were communicating with Darkbloom's central servers in the same way (pulling data from them to make inferences about the world) made the implants inadvertently become a bridge to one another. This is why they saw each other through them.

Since Alabaster and Galatea's implants weren't receiving information from Darkbloom's servers like Camelia's was, but only sending information, they weren't able to see through David's eyes, and vice versa.

All that being said, Darkbloom knew that Alabaster and Whitney were in the same town, attending the same school, and it could be said that he purposely engineered it in some fashion. He ultimately saw some spark of himself in Alabaster, I think -- especially as Alabaster grew older -- and was happy to see Alabaster having such a good relationship with Whitney. Darkbloom was an absent father but he must have kept an eye on Whitney. I think he saw it as poetically fitting and proper that one of "his" children from the implant experiments would wed one of his biological children. He envisioned passing off a huge level of power and wealth to all of them, when the time was right -- even Camelia.

>You know how your head subconsciously assigns a voice to a character when you read their dialogue?
>Whose voice do you assign to each of your characters, OP? Whether they be ripped wholesale from somebody, or just a general idea.

I have a hard time answering this one. I don't think I read my own characters' dialogue in a way that sounds like anyone in particular -- or at least not consciously -- although they do definitely have a certain voice which I imagine.

I'd say Rose sounds the clearest to me in my mind, a kind of lilting/airy smugness drips off a lot of her dialogue.

Whitney's voice has just the slightest hint of valley girl to it, and is a little deeper than a normal woman's. She may have a little bit of vocal fry going on.

Vivian is surprisingly deep given her size (but not as deep as Whitney's) and low in volume, gloomy, with excellent elocution.

Gal's voice is extremely quiet and higher pitched, she elides over a lot of hard consonant sounds and tries to speak as quickly as she can, very mumblecore.

Alabaster and Cerise are both relatively accentless and "normal" sounding in pitch, volume, pronunciation. There's nothing remarkable about how either of them speak in my mind, when I read their dialogue. Cerise might raise the pitch of her voice slightly in a professional setting, and drop it lower when drunk or schlubbing around in her underwear at home.

Kay has a voice as sly as her personality, I imagine she'd be an excellent singer; lower, kind of silky and smoky at the same time.

Sable's voice is all over the place like the rest of her. When she's yelling I imagine she's so loud that her voice begins to break and crack. When she's in a depressive mood, she's like Galatea on downers -- slow almost to the point of droning.

Alex is obviously extremely girlish given the fact that he's a boy, to the point that his voice is probably at a higher register even than Whitney's. Very airy and he often speaks haltingly because he's so uncertain of himself.

Camelia has an affectedly brash voice, she tries to make herself sound boyish, but if you catch her off guard she has a very high, pixie-ish voice and speaks very quickly. Something like a teenage Jenny Lewis maybe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDLcleGtWN0

Darkbloom sounds like he's booming even when he's speaking at a normal volume. He has the sort of voice that commands the attention of the room. Not because he's some deep, baritone speaker -- he's more of a tenor -- but because he speaks so crystalline clearly, with such obvious thoughtfulness and, of course, confidence.

>>
>>2829704
Daddy got his head blown apart. No way he’s alive on this physical plane. Sand Reckoner probably has a backup of his consciousness and can build on his experiences and memories for a CyberDarkbloom, but he’s fucking Dead In Real Life.

Amber MIGHT be alive because plot drama (x) Doubt ;_;, and Cerise is alive, though suffering a fate worse than death, because their existences DIRECTLY depend on those servers staying up (apparently Alabaster and Gal too). Darkbloom dying definitely had an effect, but we don’t actually know how deep.

>he implants inadvertently [became] a bridge to one another.

Destruction of a bridge or what’s on one side doesn’t mean both sides are destroyed.

Servers destroyed = We all die.
Servers down = some of us freeze (Ally was fine, Gal was glitching, Amber and David froze completely)
David or Amber alone die = ???
If they were truly connected in the same way, us killing Amber like he wanted would have dropped him too.

For now though, the eyepatch has been passed to the next girl in line.
>>
>>2829958
>Ally was fine
Nope, we were glitching to shit too. I bet Rose was a symptom of that.
>>
Guys, I figured out what OP meant by darkbloom inadvertently destroying the concept of a knowable truth.

It's the simulation hypothesis. Specifically the idea that if convincing simulations of reality exist, then it is infinitely more likely for you to be living in a simulation rather than reality, as there would be many simulations and only 1 reality. In addition, if the simulation is convincing, you would not notice defects in the world it's constructed and thus you have no way of knowing what they are because you're trapped looking from the inside.

Darkbloom has just demonstrated the existence of convincing simulation tech. It is now impossible for all characters in fuck quest to know they aren't living in a simulation. In fact it is infinitely more likely that they are rather than not.
>>
>>2830335
So the paranoia we'd had since the beginning only became more justified in-universe. Spooky.
>>
>>2830335
>>2830341
woke: Sand Reckoner is Darkbloom’s way of manifesting an explorable multiverse. All realities are real, none are simulations.
>Why is our reckoning any more real than any other possible reckoning?

We multiverse memes now. All choices /fq/ could have made are canon. Alabaster has ALREADY snorted Darkbloom’s premium cocaine off of Amber’s ass. There is a universe where the events of Fuck Quest are not fiction, and You are Alabaster Soliloquy.
>>
>>2830335
Also, about how this relates to darkbloom's ultimate goal: since you're likely living in a simulation, the moral argument against having sand reckoner find you your own ideal reality is moot. Your own reality is a simulation and if you break out that's probably also a simulation. It's like endless inception. So why not have sand reckoner find you the perfect simulation? Success is no longer a zero sum game if everyone had their own realities, everyone who would want to be president of the United States gets to do that. There would be no suffering, unless you would feel more fulfilled by overcoming adversity. THAT'S what sand reckoner is. It fixes the great injustice of the world, that for you to succeed, others must fail. How fitting for Alabaster to be the one opposing this goal.

I'm really enjoying the discussion in this thread recently. Keep these discussion points in mind for the following season.

I was going to include an extended monologue from Darkbloom to Alabaster in Episode 11 where some of these themes are touched upon. Because I was going to delve into it back then, I don't mind revealing it here, but don't read on if you feel it would be a spoiler to see what Darkbloom has to say on it.

Condensed, Darkbloom's speech might sound something like:

>If you found out that you were living in a simulated reality just like the one I showed you, would you choose to wake up? You would have no idea what awaits you on the other side. Would any of your friends exist out there, in the so-called real world? Would you? Would you be waking up in the body of Alabaster Soliloquy or the body of Joe Sixpack from Nashville, Tennessee -- or the body of an 80-year-old Chinese woman, or the body of a quadriplegic Chilean? Or something utterly alien and incomprehensible, a different planet, in a different universe, under a different set of axioms? Would you risk waking up in a world so apart that you cannot even draw a comparison?
>By the same token, you may have a hard time appreciating your life anymore if you stayed. You would feel the weight of solipsism. You would feel that the ones you love are fictitious anyway, simulacra. Isn't that silly? Haven't you loved them already? Don't they exist? What changes from the moment you know? They would be equally real as you; you would be equally as fictitious as they. The simulation, by being perfect, becomes real. Everything merges into one. The map begets and becomes the territory.

Two important things to also keep in mind, though.

1. Darkbloom's VR simulation wasn't convincing at all. Alabaster's mind rejected it. In other words, there's nothing to say Darkbloom's ideas are "correct" in any sense because we have not seen proof of a convincing reality simulation.

2. Alabaster would obviously have pressed Darkbloom on whether the reality of FQ2 is also some sort of simulation, and Darkbloom would reply that it likely isn't (in the sense of being generated by a Sand Reckoner type device) but that the question is completely immaterial. He would in fact be a little disappointed that we asked something so dull and pointless. Darkbloom holds two premises here: if a simulation is perfect in every way, it is not a simulation; and also, an infinite multitude of parallel realities exist.
>>
>>2830985
>or the body of a quadriplegic Chilean?

April 20, 2018

You lie curled up in bed staring at your phone on the nightstand like it's infected with black plague. You can't bring yourself to check it, not after the salvo of texts with Whitney yesterday. Who knows what obscene, repulsive pictures she texted you overnight? She's probably doing those same disgusting things with Alabaster right now, taking photos and--

You shake your head as if to physically remove these images from your mind's eye, but they refuse to vacate the premises.

And then just like that you can't take it anymore; a sudden compulsion forces you to check. You need to know. You need to see.

No texts. That's a relief. But there are four voicemails.

Still lying in bed, you put the phone to your ear and listen to the first one. It's Vivian Darkbloom.

>We will pay you a salary of $1000 per week. You start on Monday. 7:00 AM. Do not be late.

That's all there is -- short and sharp. You sit up, heartbeat going nuts, and play the message again to make sure you didn't mishear. After the terrible interview you had and the terrible news that broke about Darkbloom Analytics yesterday, you were certain that you wouldn't get an internship there. But this is real - this is exactly what's happening.

Can you really take the offer, though? Working there could do more harm than good for your professional reputation - given the scandal that just broke. Not to mention, it would mean working alongside Alabaster fucking Soliloquy.

You check your remaining voice messages, but you're hardly paying attention to them.
