It was a nice dream; A gentle lake with plenty of Brassbeak fish to catch...what else could a man of your age ask for? Alas a dream is a dream, The roaring engine of that damnable district ship has spirited your dream away. No matter, Jonathan Wells has a freshly hatched city to govern.

As your were crawling out of your bed, a throbbing pain has seized control over your 62 year old body. It was...

>Your failing heart
Decades of espionage has weakened your heart especially during the great war. The stress was too much for you in the later years. No rest for the wicked.

>Your Phantom Limbs.
An arm and A leg both blasted to high hell, the bitter memories of the great war still lingers. You would gladly do it over and over again.

>Your Mutilated Back
It burns, the only physical remnant of what they had done to you during the great war. Ironically, you were also a governor at that time too. You kept your mouth shut as it should be.

How long has it been? The years fly by as you grow older. You still recall every inch of that battlefield, every lifeless face staring at you beckoning you to rest with the dead, You almost had. In fact, you were half buried in a cake of blood and mud when they found you.

They called you a war hero. What a beautiful lie that was, You were just another mook thrown to the grinder who has found himself under the spotlight during the great war. The Eastern Wing Countries were something fierce...too stubborn to end the 452 year old wold. You could say the same for the Northern Union except your homeland relied on steam and steel instead of mystic fires and other malicious forms of arcane.

It was a stalemate of blood and misery. All ended when this virgin land was revealed behind a curtain of scathing wind. A happy accident. The two superpowers decided to seek an uneasy truce. The rest of the known world was evenly split between the two.

The mighty vessels of Northern Union has managed to cross the dreadful seas of the south while the Eastern wings has utilized their divination and other arcane means to best the winds. Thus the city of Arkuland was founded just 3 years ago.

Here is when you come in, it was agreed upon to have a militarist leading the city against the native savages of this land. The governor selected before you has died a few weeks ago, It was the Northern Union's turn. Your years as a war hero, then a retired general has earned you this very spot in the new world.

The pain has ceased for the time being, you ought to visit a doctor some time soon.. You looked to the right side of the bed only to find...

>A neatly wrapped present.
Is it your 63th birthday already? Curses. Your wife, Margret has a iron memory. You thank the lord for such a bliss.

>Mariyah, hazily coiling her arms around you.
It was a mistake, sleeping with someone 40 years younger than you. You were a desperate man after the loss of your first wife. You embraced the scandal by marrying this olive-skinned beauty. Without her care and love, You would have eaten a bullet.

>No one.
Your wife , Catherine , hasn't slept with you since lord knows when. She is a bitter and a practical woman whom you can't bring yourself to hate after all these years. She's probably smoking her morning cigarettes right now.

"Morning Bushaileel." Her soft voice was golden honey to your ears. When the great war has unofficially ended, both sides sought exotic women. You were no exception "30,000 Metra for the girl's virginity" was her father's offer. Your desperation at the time has blinded your common sense. How dare this filthy eastern mongrel sell his desert flower like that?

Your anger has melted the moment your eyes met hers. You couldn't help but to smile, you are one lucky old bull to have by your side "Do you like our accommodation, dear?"

More glaring noises from outside have muffled her answer. It will take another couple of weeks for the district ship to settle in. The previous governor was an expansionist herself or so you have heard. You started to check on your prosthetics as she gave you a quick kiss on the cheek before going to your wardrobe "Which one?"

>"I'll take the grey suit."
A tad old fashioned but it suits you just fine

>"Give me the black one."
Overly designed and luxurious. There is no doubt you will be meeting with important individual on your first day.

>" Can you bring me the blue suit instead?"
A mixture of both with a modern touch. You don't like it too much.

"I'll..." A moment of decisiveness has claimed your tongue " ...leave it to you." Your wife has a better fashion sense that you, those easterners sure loved their flashy colours in battle. It made them an easier target back then. Nowadays, they follow a pallid pattern similar to the union.

Grey suit, Ivory cane, polished black shoes and a hat to top it off...You got ready in a manner of minutes. You had to tighten your belt a bit more; someone is losing weight alright. Not a surprise, really. You still haven't decided whether to stay here or to live in the Governor's manor. Your wife does like the coziness of this place, as for you, you are mostly indifferent though the manor would be more practical for you and your future duties. It will be too spacious for you three , decisions, decisions...

A Special Someone was waiting for you at the dining table.

> Irene the second
A Yeridnn breed dog. She brought happiness to your rather silent household. Calm as a breeze and Loyal. You can't ask for more.

>Martin Jonathan Wells
Your son from your first wife. A soldier in the making, following his father's footsteps. He is not on good terms with Mariyah.

It always felt awkward with you three sitting in one table. You are always the one to start up the conversation only to get a monotonous reply from his side.

Full disclosure that's more meant as critique than insult: I just found this quest. I was interested thanks to the opening post, but the repeated one-vote decisions turned me off of the whole thing, particularly due to, well...not picking what I wanted. I can't blame you TOO much, looking at the timestamps- you waited a fair bit each time before posting, but...hm.

Not sure what else you could've done, really. Perhaps just not done character generation? Seems to bring more problems than positives in my opinion. Apologies. Best of luck, nonetheless.

"How's the city treating you , son?"

"A decent beacon for civilization. Too muddy for my taste." You knew what he truly meant. He carries your once-hatred of the easterners in his black heart for different reasons. Your wife, young as she may be, understands your son. She always turn an eye on his implications for your sake. For that, you are more than grateful.

The breakfast was your traditional Northern one: three slices of bread , a scrambled egg with a pinch of rust pepper and finally a nice warm cup tea with a spoonful of blue tear sugar. Your wife only cooks her people's food whenever Martin is somewhere else. He simply loathes any hint of spices in his food.

"I'll be heading to the recruitment today. This city could use more to fend it from the...undesirables."

"Do you need any recom-"

"I have faith in my capabilities, Jonathan." You son has barely touched his plate " Thank you for the meal, Madam." a cold response your heard thousands of times. He refuses to call her any thing else.

Moments later, he shut the door behind him. Not even considering to give his old timer a goodbye. It hurts, it hurts more than your war wounds seeing him like that; so close yet so far.

A gentle web of fingers tangled yours "Give him time, he'll understand."

"It has been 8 or 9 years. The Martin i know bef-"

"Sssssh..." Your wife has kissed you on the cheeks " The sun is shining, The birds are singing. Don't soil your day this early, Bushaileel."

The city is devoid of any wildlife, the rather recent churning pollution has either drove them away but She is right, you will have plenty of appurtenances for your day to dive straight into muck. You can visualize it already in your mind; hogs from both sides squealing for something to sign, something to legislate. They will crawl all over you.

You kissed your wife goodbye before leaving the house. You had two squads , two automobiles, a half-track and a bloody spider tank waiting for you. A mean bunch, grizzled and ready with watchful eyes. They were armed to the teeth with both light and heavy weapons. All of them sprang from their position to salute you.

"It is an honour to personally meet the hero of Kyrak's pass, governor." A bald man approached you, he had a chiseled jaw and ripped body which could snap you in half. You have seen plenty of his kind , in battle, the likes of him were the first to fall. "I am Gustav Tordeson of the silver guard. Me and my men are your security detail, we go whenever you go."

Silver guard? Figures, They kept their hand clean during the great war. With few exceptions, The Eastern Wing didn't (couldn't) assassinate high profile targets. You are too valuable for the union it seems. They have the best of the best to protect you.

There is no doubt that someone wants you dead but this is highly unnecessary

You raise your steam powered arm to salute them. Old habits die hard, you are still a solider boy at heart.

The silver guards weren't here yesterday. They must tracked you down after you so you had ditched the scheduled trip provided by the Union in favor a better alternative without the pen vultures. One thing you hate with passion is the swarm of press stalking every step of yours. No escape from these fellows, it seems.

"Off to the Core Tower, Governor?" Gustav politely asked. He was too timid, it is his job to lick your boots and to love every second of it. You take no joy in this.

"This steaming bloke?" You raised your cane to the tallest structure in the city. It is not just a government building, it is the main powerhouse of Arkuland. It took a full year for the first core ship to disassemble, must have been one hell of a sight. The savages probably must have shaken in their loincloth before its majestic brilliance.

"She's keeping us alive in this green hell."

"To be sure." You opened your pocket watch, a full hour left, excellent. "Shall we?" One of the silver guards opened the door for the automobile for you. The rest were manning your steel parade in a flash.

>" I don't fancy clogging the traffic with a bloody tank. We are moving without her."
While the spider tank is an agile thing made for all terrains, it has no place among the populace. You are not some cowardly dictator.

> "Just the bloody mobile you buffoons."
You prefer a low profile for the time being.

>"Take the fastest route if you please. I despise getting late."

"...yes, Governor." He couldn't say no. It is not like the automobile is made from paper. She could eat some bullets and perhaps some light arcane tricks. Gustav ordered some of his men to follow you from a distance in another automobile. The rest were rooted to their places. The spot your wife chose was still under development. Not everything is prebuilt in district/core walking ships, Foundations are still being erected all around you. Eastern ones as per agreement. They too want the riches this land has to offer.

The automobile was graciously equipped with all manners of luxuries, overly furnished that one with a gramophone for your leisure. Gustav sat next to the driver. You are finally moving.

>Ask the driver/Gustav some questions (write-in)
You are fairly new here, they aren't

You could not say no to a bottle of Harksen berries.

>Read the newspaper (Union)

There were some news of the eastern contient which did not intrest you. There has been some complaints here about the scarcity of certain spices and their rather exorbitant prices. A large article was defending the ongoing slavery pact which allowed the Easterners to continue their once prohibited trade after the great war was over.

'These savages have no rights to uphold, they are better off serving new masters.' said the article. As primitive as they are, the natives have wicked arcane of their own. Extremely valuable for the easterners to study and to unravel their secrets.

The scenery shifts from eastern architecture to more familiar ones. Pillars of industrialism pumping progress into the air, cold, efficient but a painful sore to the eyes. There are few artistic liberties in the buildings around you.

The tower beckons closer, with it, a crowd of people are congregating around the entrance barely kept in check by many law enforcers. Mostly Northerners with signs calling for an end to the slavery trade. Perhaps their hopes are reignited with one of their own on the seat of power.

Rabble-Rousing journalists were there too, each one has a barrage of questions at the tip of their tongue. The Automobile was slowing down, Gustav's men were already making a way for you to safely enter the core tower.

'What do you think of the previous Governor?'

'Governor,Governor! What do you have to say for your previous scandals? Are you a true war hero or a glorified war criminal?'

'Governor Jonathan, Are you going to address the problematic slavery pact?'

'What is your stance on prostitution?'

'Are you going to fix the growing corruption inside the governing body of Arkuland?'

'Do you, a sixty year old veteran , think you are qualified to assume your position?'

>Ignore the carrion, enter the tower
You are above these kerfuffles

To satisfy the thirst of the press

Wow! This is fantastic! Thank you, just caught up.

Thank you for all coming here. I will answer some questions in brief. I did not personally know the previous Governor, but from what I can see so far, he was a man who ran his position well and I hope to live up to any expectations the previous Governor no doubt left to me to fulfill. My position was selected by the most qualified individuals the Northern Union has to offer. They saw in me a man capable of leading and being a fit, proper governor. I will not lead them, nor any of the people here down. Any alleged corruption will be dealt with swiftly. My stance on prostitution is one of zero tolerance. Thank you for your time, please address any further questions in writing to my office and I will happy to respond when I am more settled in.

You earned puzzled looks and even few smirks from the slithering journalists , what did you say to invoke such reaction? While you did not address slavery in your brief speech, your carefully chosen words had an impact on the protesters.

Your security detail deflected any further questions and rushed you towards the entrance, a giant double door hissing as it opened its maws for you. It was sealed shut the moment after. Silence, graceful one. You sighed out of relief, nothing will satisfy these vermins.

The Lobby had a floor of marble and granite. Spacious and Majestic with a giant clock made of brass above the receptionist. Everyone walking and talking about stopped as you took your first steps toward. Only Gustav was to follow, the rest has dispersed to give you some breathing room.

"Quite a bold statement, kind sir. Didn't know that Governor Ayyah was a man in guise." A tanned man in a plain suit, couple of years younger than you, approached with a big cigar lodged between his white-as-pearl teeth. He a tad shorter than you with a round belly and a cheerful altitude.

Ah, so there is why. They'll bite your heels for such a minuscule mistake, you are sure of it. For now, you shook hands with the man "Jacob Vangree, You and the rest of your company saved our hide back in Heriisa. We were bombarded with arcane bile for weeks. So much knowledge lost, what a shame."

"Oh yes, how can i forget? " It was a massacre and an incentive for the union to accelerate their chemical warfare advancements. To think a single person could wrought such devastation.

Jacob chuckled " Good times, Now look at me, from having a rotten rat for dinner to overseeing this beautiful core as a Grand Coremaster. It is quite an upgrade if i dare say so myself. Is the city to your liking, Governor ?"

" Its Eastern-Northern amalgamation is something to behold. Never to be seen back home." Only the brightest minds of the union would dream of such position. The Core is a finicky thing to maintain, furthermore, A Grand Coremaster is often associated with the internal affairs of the ruling body itself. While he is not on the top of chain command, his role is as much as important compared to yours.

"I wouldn't just allow any rascal to be the first to welcome you, come, your office awaits."

Naturally, the very last floor was only reserved for you. You could not fathom climbing all of these stairs. This elevator was a bliss. Your office was as opulent as expected, perhaps too much for your taste. The pile of documents waiting for you was rather foreboding.

"Here we are, before i would let you resume your duties, you must choose a secretary. I personally picked three candidates for you. Do keep in mind that your choice will affect your public image. It is up to you to decide."

The Coremaster handled you three files, one for each secretary.

>Ludwig Vionkreg
A young man in his twenties, excels in your typical paper work and espionage. His delicate position will allow him to counter any potential spies/assassins while utilizing his cover. To the public, he is another Northerner in a position of relative power. This will make the union happy but will upset the Eastern Wing. Furthermore, should his true identity be relieved for one reason or another, there will be heavy consequences in the future.

A woman in her thirties from one of the countries swallowed by imperialism. This will greatly bolster your image among the few minority groups (Non Easterners/Northerners) but may have a negative impact elsewhere. As per any woman, any exposed affair will be disastrous. Career ending, even.

When the great war was over, the two superpowers have agreed to split the rest of world between them, mainly the western contient and the southern isles who were neutral/independent . A diplomatic capitulation was offered to these countries. Some agreed to such terms while others sought to protect their sovereignty which of course was not an option.

The Northern territories do enjoy some sort of liberty at the expense of heavy taxes for their privileges. The Eastern territories is another story; a mumble jumble of chaos, freedom, oppression. You have heard various conflicting opinions on the eastern regime. Needless to say, they despise both sides for their atrocities but they are too weak to actually do something about it.

"There she is, a beauty isn't she?" Jacob coughed heavily as your new secretary has entered your office. She was stunning to say the least, long black hair, light skin with plump lips.

"Thank you sir." She cracked a gentle smile " I am Esteilla Gabriel. I am more than glad to be chosen to assist you in your day to day duties."

"That's the spirit! Like it or not, the whole city is counting on you so better get to it!" as he was about to leave the office, he had another thing to say " If you need anything, send someone to my department at the 9th floor."

"I'll keep this in mind. Have a good one"

"Would you like something to drink, Governor? Northern? Eastern? or even from my humble home?" It was nine o'clock by then, time does fly so fast already.

> "It is Jonathan, I had enough of Governors already"
You are getting sick of your new title.

"Right away." She quickly left your office as you sank further in your new chair. For an old man like you, this is a bliss.

The Whole city was visible from the retractable screen windows, well, some of it; the rest was obscured by heavy smoke. Pharmaceutical companies are swimming in Metra for their quintessential drug combating the swathes of pollution. They face some fierce competition with eastern companies who resort to the arcane instead of chemical compounds.

You took a peek at the documents on your desk, almost all of them wanted a signature, yours to be exact. Your Secretary has return with a blueish drink which made you raise an eye "What is this?"

" A tropical Tea - Astilo Angoroves. Should i-"

"No, no. I'll drink it." It was bizarre by all means. A blue tea? What's next, A frozen Tea? You took a sip, it was too sugary and too bitter at the same time like a citrus fruit. However, it was not too-too terrible, you have drank worse.

"Tell me, What are these document about?" You gently tapped on the documents with your ivory cane.

"Agreements for you to sign, Governor." She replied "By signing them, you will fully submit to the collective laws of the Northern Union and the Eastern Wing Countries."

From 1 to 3, You is free time . Though, you have an invitation to Farafe - a famous eastern restaurant

This is about making sure there is no perceived favoritism amongst the public and private sector, Eastern/Northern regions. If there are any kickbacks, favors, unpaid taxes that sort of thing, we will be able to root it out faster and give a level playing field for all after checking the paperwork. This will also serve as well as a basis of our first report regarding the state of the region, in case we SHOULD try to control and monopolize a particular industry, in the name and goodwill of the people we so govern. "Yes Governor, forgive me if i wasn't too thorough. I'll see if i missed anything else from our archives."

"Good, good." Your mechanical grip on your cane tightened as you stood up. "I best be going. Don't want to keep the gents below to waiting. Gustav, with me."

The Silver Guard ,who was standing this whole time outside of your office, followed you to the elevator. The meeting should be 5 floors below yours.

"Tell me Gustav, What do you think of the girl?"

"Is she really the best the Coremaster has to offer?" He expressed mild annoyance from the subject "Should i have someone on her tail, Governor? Her country has killed a lot of Northerners during the territorial wars..."

"I'll have her tracked all the time, Governor." This will bring some ease to your mind. As for the documents, you will sign them later this day.

The meeting was set in a large hall, a long table made from some black tree, probably native to these lands . An assortment of outlandish decorations were pinned and hanged on the wall; Giant skulls of terrible beasts, bioluminescent feathers and an oil painting depicting the core ship making history- A collaboration between the North and the East.

As for the attendees, they were as you would have expected ; Well-Seasoned politicians smiling and shaking hands in front of the tripod cameras, a plethora of guards from both sides Those flashes of light used to trigger old memories, painful ones of dear loss. You still winced instinctively. At least the press here is more tame than those outside.

Finally, there was a very special Matrah meditating at the corner of the hall with guards of her own. She is powerful arcane caster who negate other arcane usage. A necessary measure to be taken.

Again, you were the center of attention. The only pleasant eyes around were that of Jacob who was already drinking before the meeting would even start. There was little time to socialize, first , a speech is due.

Your secretary has also made it, She sneaked in some cards for you at the podium. You glanced at her words, It was a rather generic one but serviceable. You stood behind the podium, your advisors were on your right and left. All went silent for your speech.

>"No photographs, please."
Let old memories remain buried.

>" It is a great honor to serve this...."
Your secretary's speech, flowery and appeasing to the press and the masses but with no soul.

>"The Law choose me to enforce order in Arkuland. It is my sole duty to..."
An assertive and authoritarian speech, promising to crush any traces of corruption.

>"My people, Sons and Daughters of the Glorious North and East..."
A down-to-earth speech with more soul to it...and a lot of promises as well to better the lives of everyone

>" Good people of Arkuland, I come here not as a man of war but a man who is FORCED to take drastic actions, two weeks ago... "
A rousing speech filled rage, further demonizing the natives and their unwanted aggression.

>"I apologize for my earlier mistake this morning, I have to say..."
A light hearted speech, with some jokes on the side. Virtually inoffensive to anyone.

>" 30 years ago, The man who stands before you was a..."
A Sympathetic speech, calling for peace, equality and an end to aggressive expansion and slavery.

You promised a lot of thing in your improvised speech. How were you actually going to achieve them is another story. You wonder how the press will twist your words/use them against you.

When you were done, others took your place. The Grand Coremaster was first, he vouched for you bringing up how you and your company saved unarmed civilians from the ire of war. His intentions were good but the way he put it....

Next up were your advisors who had a brief speech, first one was Eliza Kazzan : Your social adviser. Her sun kissed skin and her sky blue eyes were a dead giveaway; Easterner Father, Northerner Mother. She must be well informed of both cultures to assume such position. Her words were dry, sharp and to the point.

Your Military advisory spoke after her, an elegant boy long white hair. Aukustus Darvin was him name. Probably the son of some fancy general or a royalty who used his influence to seat his child among grown ups. You hate everything about him, the way he speaks, the way he drowns you with flattery, his woman-like voice and altitude. You have seen women more manlier than him in the battlefield. Revolting.

Your economic adviser was none the palpable either. An Eastern slug in disguise. This Medehat Kalamah focused on the previous governor and how perfect she was. Poor bastard's heart is aching to continue his duties under the thumb of a filthy Northerner.

When he was finished, Your arcane/native adviser stepped in. Timid as a mouse with few words, that one. You barely heard her name as spoke almost spoke in whispers. Kemer Kasoof was a Matrah, she wore her traditional garb which obscured all but her lips and nose. You are not to judge, you have seen worse.

Finally, Noskk Akaravich had his chance to speak. You know him, the famous inventor who is practically the father of all the Goliath land-walking ships. No doubt he is your technological adviser.

When this was all over, you quickly shook hands with the representatives who wore a board smile. Every single one of them. Labors, Minorities, Native, Women...they almost never stopped coming.

"I appreciate your honesty, I really do. You won't find it here." Her eyes darted over circles of gossip and laughter "Look at them, thick skins, barely a sweat of struggle on their foreheads."

"Are you implying something?"

"Me? No, no, not at all, Dear Governor. " She took a deep breath " I do act like a blabber-mouth sometimes. As it stands, Myself and my lovely competent company of advisors are here to make sure you don't stray from the intended path. A Tricky one at that; are you going to please the Union? the Wing? or the very people of this city?"

You were about to reply when she abruptly cut you off "You'll fail to satisfy all so don't try too hard. Taking sides is also a non favorable option, you see what i mean?"

A photographer kindly asked to take a photograph of you two shaking hands and smiling. You always look like a perverted man when the bright flash blinds your eyes. She phased through it like it was nothing.

"A North-East clash of culture is nothing new, it was a thing for four and a half centuries. Not here however, My sole job is to make you fully understand the current ongoings of 'your people' as you phrased it. Unfiltered and strictly neutral for a better judgement. You do best to remember that."

She was soon swooped away by other journalists asking her about day-to-day problems faced by the public. You find yourself with a sizzling drink and an uninsresting company congratulating you on your new position. This meeting was almost over, just a few more minutes....

You had a brief chatter with some of the rather more important representatives. Due to the unique nature of this city, The Dual-law is in effect were every single law has two variations (unless both the Northern and the Eastern iterations were in harmony with each other) . Often times, this duality will conflict with itself causing unwanted friction that is rarely solved by itself.

Prime Legislator Arudelle Cenidekt and Sword-Law Nakea't Musel are perhaps the most two powerful individuals below you. They are the head of Lawmakers/supervisors . The dyad are supposed to value this city's intrest then the superpower they swore allegiance to. A Governor's job is to intact, reappeal or to revoke the laws passed by them. More drastic laws requires the approval of all three parties (and/or some of the representatives should it come to that.) . It is true that you have great authority but your power is not absolute.

The idea of having a neutral governor from any of the territories was a proposition that was quickly discarded in fear of an unwanted rise in power or anything of the same caliber. Each superpower would rather trust an enemy they know too well than to resort to a wild card.

"...It is a shame they couldn't attend the meeting. They are quite the character." said Maxson Robertson, one of the few businessmen allowed in the meeting "But you should have your fill with those two bickering love birds, Governor. How's that drink? Is it your next favorite?"

The man gave you a warm smile "Only joking! The rest of my brothers are getting more and more blind by greed. They more or less twisted my arms to spearhead our operations here so they can fill their bellies with money back home. Jokes on them! I already like it here. These people, wherever they came from, are good people. Travelling all the way here for a new chance in life. Robertson's will just make it merrier for these poor sods, amiright?"

Young but capable that Maxson fellow, his cheerfulness was almost contagious and to be honest, the drinks were great. You were thankful they didn't go for anything fancy in the meeting .

You wished to speak with more people , you will have plenty of opportunities for that later. It is not as if they will leave you alone. Gustav and Miss Gabriel were waiting for you outside, the woman was visibly sweating "Have i done something wrong? I rewrote them over a dozen times..."

"The cards? No, no you did well... I prefer mine over minced words. Thank you for writing, I will use them someday."

"Oh,I- Very well, Governor. Where do you want to eat? I am sorry to remind you but you have an invitation to Farafe. They are expecting your arrival. And..." Her had two bags filled with documents " The documents, Governor...should you want to sign in now."

"Of course, anything else?"

"Something to eat, salt crackers if you will." This should silence your stomach for a spell.

You returned to the top floor with a hefty sum of documents to sign. Thousands of tiny words crammed in single pages, your sight is not what it used to. You had to squint for the first couple of pages before giving up on them altogether. It was more of the same; you are in a seat of power, abusing your position will be met with punishment, you must not favor the Northern union needlessly, you must follow all of the previous agreements...etc.

Your mechanical arm did all the signing as you continued to nibble on your snack which was excellent by the way. Miss Gabriel brought you an icy cup of water alongside them and a small sweet roll to dispel the saltiness when you are done. You are starting to like this woman, she is leaving nothing but good impressions so far.

Alas, you are free. It would have been one hell of a strain on your wrist should you have written with your other arm. You had to rely on your other arm a lot even after the prosthetic. A bloody hour has passed in a blink . It is two o'clock already.

Your secretary has sent someone to inform the fancy restaurant that you were not coming. " Farafe apologizes for sending an invitation in the most inoppturne time. They have asked to have this card personally delivered to you.."

A black card, heavy, with strands of gold forming the logo of the restaurant; a peacock with gaint feathers coiling around an egg . The also had your name on it. So this is one of those lifetime membership cards the rich flaunt it each time they could to stroke their egos. Your dear wife might like endless free visits... but you...

>Take the card
It is one of the perks of being a governor and a gift to boot. Nothing wrong here.

High Hope, a military hospital funded by the saints of Voropa. This holy organization has saved thousands of soldiers during the great war - including yours. When the Northern countries were swimming in debt and deficit, The saints graciously intervened after their initial neutral stance. It is not a surprise to see them instilling their services here...

This is yet another war front.

The hospital had a large statue that you were oh so familiar with, five saints crying over a pile of corpses, those who are still alive clutch dearly to their holy robes. This statue was installed at every branch. Only recently they were accepting donations after their centuries-old treasury was growing thin. Despite all of this, Union is far less religious compared to the Eastern Wing, focusing on the material world rather than what lies beyond.

Not a single journalist was in the outer parameter. The public might not know of this just yet. The only reason you could think of this is...

A team of doctors, officials and most importantly a saint were waiting for your arrival. Gustav and the rest of the silver guard kept an eye on anything unusual in the vicinity.

Saints have unusual life spans, the first saint Arkoe supposedly lived for 300 years. This is perhaps one of the few aspects of the that is deemed to be arcane in nature. The one before you was certainly older than you, she greeted you with a gentle smile "On behalf of all of my sisters, I welcome you to High Hope Hospital."

>A kiss on the thumb
An old tradition, peasants and kings alike used to interact with the holy saints this way.

This rigid old mentality must be erased. This isn't feudalism. This is a new age.

The Saint certainly didn't expect that. You are not someone special unlike her. She deserves all the reverence.

Once inside, you recalled the same pattern of floor/wall tiles you spent weeks staring at when you were half dead. A simplistic design, not too overly invasive or obnoxious to the eye.

The first batch of soldiers you greeted in their beds were recovering from scratches and bites. For the most part, they were not deformed from their traumatic encounter. They were quite responsive too with rejuvenating spirits seeing one of their own checking on them.

However, your fleeting relief was vanished in the air. It was replaced instead by haunting suspicions which came true. There were no press around because of the plethora of mutilated soldiers in different states of serious injuries. Such horrific images were not mean to be shown to the public. Fear and Panic is something to be avoided. Some were not even conscious by the time briefly approached them.

The worst one by far was a soldier named Faust, according to the report: his limbs, genitals and face were devoured and mutilateed by these savages as well as chunks from his abdomen. His chest had also suffered from blistering arcane injuries. Unlike Eastern Arcane, this native arcane is more primordial relying on sacrifices, blood, rituals and the land itself. It is no place in the civilized world.

He was barely kept alive with almost no hope for an expected recovery. Everyone was queasy around this unfortunate soul. Rightfully so. You could only whisper worthless words to his bandaged ear hole. He acknowledge your presence for few seconds where he said two words to you...

"Kill me...."

You know this desperation too well, you forsake any hope for survival too and yet....he is in a condition far more worse than yours. Your heart almost stops for a second thinking about this ordeal.

A Mercy kill is something non applicable here among saints. They believe in the sacred nature of the soul. They will keep him alive for as long as it takes till his body could not handle the pain any further. You have the authority to force it for an ending to his suffering but the saint may not like it to put it in simpler terms.

A far more expensive alternative is another possibility. You might even to able to save him with experimental treatments (which usually invokes highly advanced steam prosthetic ) but these thousands of Metras ought to come out from somewhere...mainly the government budget balance. The same thousands which could be spent elsewhere for greater benefits. Another thing to consider that Brave Faust won't be the first or the last to be horribly mangled like so.

The last option you could consider is to seek the Da'eea or the sacred winds; they are main religious body of most Easterners known for their potent arcane prowess. while they are of similar nature to the Saints, they serve a larger purpose in the Eastern Wing with greater influence. Their services encompass many aspects of Easterner lives. They will only heal their kin but a man in your position may sway them to at least give a better chance to Faust. Without a doubt, this is a slap to the face to the saints and the Western Union as a whole.

>You will do nothing.
Sometimes, this is the best favored action. May his last days be of relative peace.

>You will resort to a Mercy Kill
To end a suffering, you are willing to upset the saints.

>You will resort to more expensive/experimental treatment funded by the government.
To give him a sliver of hope, you are willing to potentially waste thousands and thousands of Metra just for his sake.

>You will arrange an immediate transfer to Da'eea Masharka Healing House
To give him the highest chance of recovering, you are willing to administer him to the Sacred Winds and their superior arcane treatments.

If only you could unite both them both under one banner. The Saints of Voropa see all Non Northerners as soulless husks unworthy of their mercy while The Sacred winds are absolutely zealous when it comes to their secretive healing techniques. It is not as if Northerners are Arcane-Capable in the first place.

Knowledge Sharing in general are rarely agreed upon for both sides know this so called peace is temporary, who knows when would the great war reemerges from its ashes. To conclude, It is an impossibility. Pressing onwards for the matter could jeopardize your position despite your pure intentions.

You checked on more soldiers before calling it for the day. You were glad to leave a positive impression on the way out. You crawled back to the automobile, exhausted to the core.

"Are you alright, Governor?"

"I am not used to all of this venturing. I could ask you the same." His face was paler than yours as the driver started the engines.

"..." was his reply. His opinion was uncalled for but you understand where he is coming from. You too were blinded by hatred at his age. You could not really blame him.

Finally, Home. The Silver guard stationed there were bickering with a group of individuals your men used to fear in the old days.

The Crimson Dirge , Aharmair.

An elite group of nimble warriors. Dancers in the battlefield who utilize illusionary arcane to swiftly advance among ranks shrugging off conventional firearms as if it was nothing. These dangerous group of women has turned the scale of many battlefields. A captured one was often met with a fate worse than death for all the good men they have slaughtered. How could you forget that time when....

"What's going on here? Explain yourself!" Gustav was clearly pissed of their mere presence. He was completely ignored, the leader of Aharmair chose to speak to you only "Envoy of the North, Governor of Arkuland, I am Roza Shabaat. We were chosen by Sword-Law Nakea't Musel to personally guard you , your household and your other interests...your 'men' are too fragile to accept our arrival. We trust your judgement."

The woman was quite understanding of your demands. They were reasonable enough. Since you have not decided on whether you would like to relocate to the manor, both The Silver Guard and the Crimson Dirge settled in the closet two houses to yours. The ladies had a menacing equivalent of a spider tank in form of a giant beast with many tentacle, sharp as a sword when erect. It was called Wartongue during the great war, you don't have a clue of its true name though. It was terrifying to see one of those stomping through trenches as if it was nothing. Only a coordinated artillery strike could bring it down.

"Bushaileel, you are back." Ah, the smile you long for "How was your first day?"

"Don't remind me," You finally took off your jacket, what a burden it was on you " Where is Martin?"

"He was here a couple of hours ago... packing his luggage."

"So soon?" Your wife nodded, he clearly wanted to get out as far as possible from you two. This is nothing you could do about it, let him make this own path.

"Can you ready me a bath, Dear?" Your crumbling body was begging for warm water at the end of the day. Mariyah didn't bring her assortment of rose waters with her sadly, she used them to make every single bath a special occasion like a small scale ceremony. Oh well.

You helped yourself with more crackers as the water was getting warmer. When it was ready, you jumped in the relatively small bath tub. Your prosthetics were waterproof so you didn't need to put them away thankfully.

"Someone is in a dire need of a massage..." You know this playful tone too well. It does start with gentle rubbing and pressing before it would escalate to something far more pleasurable...

>"Yes please..."
It has been a while.

>"Not today, Dear. I am as lively as a wilted plant."
You absolutely hate to turn her down but it is too much for your body.

Your heart almost gave up half way through. It was not her fault; she was going slow, you could not just keep up.

You ended the day by swallowing a handful of pills, one for your lung, two for your heart and finally, a pain dampener. It was time to sleep.

-o-o-o-

You were awaken by heavy thumping that rang your ears. That District Ship will never cease to be an annoyance it seems.

"Goood Morning, Governor. A pleasant night i hope?" The man sitting in the dark corner almost startled you. He wore with one of those Easternized Suits, needlessly expensive by the looks of it. He had the same aura of predatory men in power that you know too well. Intoxicated by life, Invulnerable.

"Who are you? How did you get inside my house?" You addressed the stranger while in your sleepwear. Your wife was still sleeping upstairs, Your prosthetic had a short blade you could retract. Old you may be but you are far from helpless.

The stranger smirked at your aggressive stance " Attacking the Sword-Law on your second day? Unfavorable thing to do if you asked me." He shrugged it off "Yes, yes... it is rude to enter uninvited but we have a pressing matter at hand. Before that, Would you please relocate to the Manor already? This...shack is demeaning for men in our status. It also make you quite a vulnerable target."

>"Get out of my house. Now!"
The Smug bastard thinks he could waltz in wherever he pleases.

>"Quite, The drawbacks of this houshold are growing by the day."
Your wife will have to adjust to the manor

>"I believe i'll stay here, Nakea't."
Paritially out of spite and because your wife likes it here,

The Sword-Law was taken back by your reply, he tightened his slightly loose cravat " Suit yourself. Get dressed, We depart in haste."

While you did not like to be herded like so by this ill mannered man, you chose to oblige for the sake of whatever this emergency was. The Easterner was kind enough to leave as you were getting ready. One quick breakfast later, You kissed your wife goodbye before heading outside.

What a scene it was, his guards were aplenty, t least thrice your company. He was waiting for you in a behemoth of an automobile, had it not been for its wheels, you would have called it a tank. Both Gustav and Roza were equally vexed from such intrusion.

"Great Governor, forgive us. Sword-Law Nakea't Musel forced himself in."

"I am to be blamed, Governor. I should have been more strict even with a Sword-Law."

"It is nothing," You were content to see both of them agreeing on something. "Gustav, with me. Roza, stay here."

-o-o-o-o-o-o-

The interior of the automobile was painfully luxurious; anything that could be painted with gold had a wasteful gleam to it. Precious stones sparkled in each corner. It was only your grimace versus his smugness.

"Care for a crystal k-"

"Care to inform me why you barged into my home?" You interrupted him as he was offering you a drink.

The man rolled his eyes "Governor, Oh Governor, Why would you be so hostile with the man who -for the most part- foiled an assassination plot on your behalf?"

"... Explain."

"Yes, yes, while you were enjoy your meeting. I, and prime legislator were in the middle of no where attending to a trio of filthy Westerners who have been anxiously waiting for your arrival...Arrests were made in the hush-hush just a few days before your arrival. You understand how it goes."

"Why are you and the Prime Legislator
involved in this?"

"Good Question," he elegantly took a sip from his drink. " Arudelle and I were the de facto leaders of this good city for these last few weeks. When your secretive Milesons and our Dalal has uncovered said plot, it fell on our shoulders to take certain actions, Ones that may have a drastic effect on the main contient. Of course, with Arudelle being a stubborn woman that she is, she refused to authorize anything from her part until you were officially in power. "
>"I apologize for my aggressive altitude."
Easterner or not, he has done his part to keep you and the city safe.

>" Tell me more..."
There is no doubt they you will be informed about those individuals later on. You do want to hear it from his perspective first.

>"Who knows about this plot so far?"
This is important.

"A little background for you. What do you know about the Under-District?"

"The Sole underground district?"

"Correct, One of the first district ships to settle in made a disastrous mistake and started to drill above an underground cavern. Had not Our bravest Matrahs intervened, hundreds of lives and most importantly millions of Metra would have been lost." The fog of industrialism was slowly fading away, it was being replaced by a soft, natural breeze. Dense tropical forests loomed in the horizon.

"Good Governor Ayyah has repurposed both the cavern and the half-functioning district ship to accommodate most of the low class and those pesky minorities. Her vision was a brilliant city worth every praise, this undesired underbelly was hidden from public eyes and neglected for the most part during her constant expansions. My suggestion to demolish this under district was ignored with her citing that the most beautiful of flowers grow from tasteless soil, all muddy and disgusting."

"Your point?"

"Medehat Kalamah, your economic advisor, has noticed a strange pattern in the Under District, small businesses that would suddenly go bankrupt despite all of your unethical banking '''loans'''. Governor Ayyah dismissed such activities so he went behind her back to me. Couple of Months later, Our collaborative work with the Milesons has revealed the true names of three Westerners who were declared dead two years ago. They were hiding VERY close to a native village. In their shack, we have found an assortment of weapons ranging from rifles to explosive devices. Oh and a plan to bomb your automobile with a trap hidden in a manhole during your first visit to the core tower."

"How do you know they are related to these sudden bankruptcies?"

"Out of 19 Businesses, 15 were owned by fake names used by them." He replied "I doubt we are fully aware of their true identity, they had a lot of forged documents."

"Are we dealing with spies?" The idea has crossed your mind.

"Possibly, I wouldn't rule it out. It could be a lone group of territorians seeking revenge without any backing. It would have been easier for us to tell if they had uttered a single word."

Nameless Westerners, Bankrupting Businesses, Forged Documents and a failed plot... interesting. "Who knows about this plot so far?"

"As few as possible...at least from my side." The Sword-Law has finished his drink "I wouldn't vouch for Arudelle. Most of the leaks that has made it to the press drips from her side just so you know. Do you have any other questions?"

>" That would be all."

"The Union Bank had offered loans to 5 businesses, the rest resorted to the Longwhite Bank which has higher interests but an extended period of time to repay. "

"And the papers?"

"False Contracts, checks, credentials, Identities and certificates of varying qualities. Some are purely made by amateurs, Others are on par with your typical spywork. It is the strongest lead we have. No Eastern documents however, ours are usually verified by the arcane." You know this fact too well. It made espionage during the great war a tricky endeavor from your side.

The scenery around you was slowly changing to a de-forested area dotted by colossal machinery which were digging its autonomous claws into the soil. It was a bumpy road. Good thing he had finished his drink, otherwise, he would have spilled it all over.

"Another question if you don't mind...about past leaks. How are you so confident in your words?"

"You mean the leaks?" He laughed at your expense " You see, I and all who fall under my authority follow the Tagneem Kano, The Divine Law . My title is not a meaningless one. I AM the sword of the law. Under most circumstances, those in power who are proven to break the pillars of our laws are put to the sword. We are not so lenient when it comes to punishment. Discipline and Obedience. Governor Ayyah wanted to abolish said rules, the very same rules that made the Eastern Wing what they are."

You wonder if life has any value in the eastern part of the world with rampant execution and slavery. If only the great war has broken their pride alongside their backwater traditions.

The Automobile stopped at a small watch tower overlooking stretches of bronze salts. The wind immediately started to blow the moment you stepped outside with Gustav and the Sword-Law.

Together, you went down a hatch to an underground bunker. Cold and Grey walls, every step in these long corridors echoes. You were finally face to face with the Prime legislator.

"Governor Jonathan, Woefully sorry for bringing you here, It is a matter of utmost importance ." A redhead woman reaching for her forties, her face had a lot of freckles which was dizzying to look at in the first place.

"So where are our guests?"

"The Room beyond but..." she paused " I would like to get the other advisors involved in this as well so your can formulate the best possible decision possible."

"Governor, Governor, what good are they here? You have me and your Kinswoman to consult! The more people involved in this, the harder will it be to contain it!" The Easterner objected fiercely.

>"I value all of my advisors. Bring them here."
Even if they did little. Transparency matters the most to you.

>"Let us proceed without them."
You don't need them at the moment

>"I actually prefer having...." (write in a specific advisor/anyone of note to come here )
their opinion is valuable.

"Gustav, what says you?"

"Me?" He looked surprised " Prime Legislator may have a point. We need them more than ever."

It took three hours for everyone to be present, excluding your economic advisor, everyone was oblivious on what was going on.

You and the rest were lead to a large room with a one way mirror where each one of them was tied to a single metal chair.

A bald man in his forties.

A Heavily scarred girl in her late teens.

A Scrawny man in his early thirties.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," The Sword-Law addressed the rest "This three individuals of Western origins were planning to kill our new governor. So far, none has chose to cooperate..."

From your side, you saw men and women interrogating the trio with different verbal approaches with no success "They are not willing to cooperate which leaves us with little choices to consider."

"I know where are you going...Governor, Nakea't wants you to break the Humanitarian rights law signed by both sides . He wants you to authorize torturing them for something that they might not have! " The Prime Legislator immediately went to the point.

"What other alternatives do we have? Would you like us to simply report our findings to the main continents? With no ground evidence, the Union and the Wing will turn over their territories only to escalate the problem further. No one needs to know, If you too paranoid, the associated personnel can be easily disposed of..."

"THE AUDACITY! " Arudelle's hands wavered in unfiltered rage "Look at him! So eager to KILL and MAIM at the drop of a hat! They ar-"

"I AM doing what is the best for Arkuland, The East, The North, EVERYONE! The lives of the few are NOTHING for the greater good yo-"

"SILENCE!" You had enough "You did not bring me here to witness children bickering about. Everyone, please suggest the best course of action so i may consider it."

" Ignore the laws made for civil men, Torture them until they squeal. Dispose of working personnel should the need arises... We must act swiftly before another incident takes place." said Sword-Law Nakea't Musel.

" We must abide to our laws regardless of the situation. We will continue our interrogations while working on our current evidences to uproots the likes of them. Then we will make everything public." said Prime Legislator Arudelle Cenidekt.

"With each passing month, The Northern Union and The Eastern Wing demand more and more of us. An economic instability from any similar attack will have a negative impact on our dwindling budget. I hate to admit this but i stand with Sword-Law Nakea't ." said Medehat Kalamah, your economic advisor.

"What a fine choice sir Nakea't has offered. The Sooner were are done with these rebels, the better we can focus on our campaign against the barbaric natives." said Aukustus Darvin, your military advisor.

"Why not publicize it right now? This is OUR problem, not the Union's, not the Wings . Both the government and the people should work together to find an end to this. I have faith in the good people of this city, they will help us in their own way. We have nothing to hide." said Eliza Kazzan, Your social advisor.

"I...sense great pain in ... these vessels. For the sake of this country...A Matrah can perform a forbidden ritual...A sin to peer into one's soul...the guilt will eat A Matrah's soul from inside...The Da'eea...will despise you for...such sacrilege. Their anger...will be unending..." whispered Kemer Kasoof, Your arcane advisor.

" I am always an advocate of peace, son. With all due to respect, I do not approve of violent approaches to this problem. Why not let one or two go free? We can follow them up close. Someday, they will slip and we will be there to catch them! " said Noskk Akaravich, your technological advisor.

I believe Prime Legislator Arudelle's course of action is the best plan for now. We should not involve the citizenry in this manner, lest we cause undue stress on the populace as well as tip our hands to unknown parties that their comrades are currently within our custody. Sword Law Nakea't, do you know of any private investigators or former spies who do not follow your Tagneem Kano that would be able to go undercover and attempt to find out more than what your men are able to?

"An insult that i will overlook, that. Of course they are many Easterners influenced by the North to abandon the divine law seeking more private lawless establishments but i assure you: i and Coremaster Jacob Vangree take it very seriously to uncover rats and filth in my department. The Coremaster has been very helpful this whole time. " He was pretty scornful with you siding with the Prime Legislator. "If you do have not faith in our supreme Dalal, you can find what you need with the Milesons."

"We already have both of our agencies scattered all over the Under-district. We don't need any external help." said Arudelle with a more pleasant tone. A former spy peacefully living the rest of his days here is impossible. Almost all of the former Eastern spies are enjoying a heavily monitored new life in their homeland or in the bottom of the ocean having outlive their usefulness.

It was settled. All of you were to sign a document signifying your decision. It will also protect you and the rest should something happen to the prisoners.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-

"Enjoy the rest of your day, Governor. I will be seeing you tomorrow in the tower with better news, i hope." Waved the Sword-Law at you as he and the rest of were returning back to the city. You were provided with another automobile with her own set of guards should you desire to return alone without any company.

Eliza, I'm sorry, Miss Kazzan, you seem to have your hand on the pulse of the city. I would like to know if there any private investigators who do not particularly follow the edicts of Sword-Law Nakea't nor Prime Legislator Arudelle who would be of further assistance in this endeavor, though, it should go without saying, the individual would have to be extremely discreet about this matter. I don't want people to worry about this until we have it completely under control.
