/qst/ - Quests

Got a bit shanghaied for a project for the folks gents, sorry about the late start! I swear I'm still shooting for 1800EST opening posts!

Archive here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%202016 If anyone new is jumping in, you can ignore anything without the 'reboot' in the title- the first crack at this was done at a pretty strange time in my life and my... uh.. well whatever I wasn't writing very well or planning hardly at all and it shows! haha!

I think that's enough for now, though keep in mind the run may be weird this week. I know I have to be at the tree farm tomorrow at 1700EST, so probably no thread then, and past that IDK what's going on, so we'll kinda have to play it all by ear.

===================================================================================================================================================

Your mood as you make your way back to Atsugi is lifted by Kyou's- she's exhilarated that you caused so much damage so quickly, though you can feel the disappointment that you weren't able to chase down the broken remnants of the Chinese aircraft. You flash out over the sea of Japan over the city of Gangneung, it's airbase already damaged by an attack hours ago- and most of the surviving aircraft withdrawn to the south already, with the remainder either destroyed in place by the retreating base personnel, or broken down for overland movement. The Koreans have reacted to this attack more violently- there's stories already coming out of the north about units cut-off by the Chinese advance making last stands, costing the PLA far more than their number. Kyou seems to be speed-reviewing them now, aided by Muninn- though you can feel her looking for targets of opportunity.

You're better than a hundred miles out, passing north of Ulleungdo island- which, itself, is busy. While never heavily militarized, the island's already playing host to evacuation helicopters- mostly IJA helos, ferrying the wounded and noncombatants out of the most immediately threatened areas, according to their manifests.

Sixty miles further east is the first evidence of a concerted Japanese response- though, as with most things, it's an evacuation force. Still, it's impressive- two of the Naka-class light cruisers- so-called because of their limited range and correspondingly smaller displacement- lead a force of landing craft and some impressed civilian vessels across the water, making best speed for the evacuation ports. The ships- their onboard AIs identifying themselves as the Naka and Jintsuu- are primarily designed for service in the sea of Japan, and loaded for air defense. You're sure the troops they're going to withdraw will be happy to see them- and that the two ships should be more than enough to see off any sort of Chinese attack against the fleet.

1/2
>>
You also pass above flights of IJAAF aircraft heading west- an air armada that seems almost endless, as if the Imperial military is throwing the entire airforce into the fight. While you doubt that- and Muninn confirms it's not true- it seems like it as squadrons of F-14EJ+, F-2As, and Shinden Kais pass below you. One flight of shindens is in the characteristic White and Crimson of the imperial guard force- though neither you nor Kyou know who's with them. It's hard telling, she admits- technically, the imperial family is quite large, though the ones in line for the throne, the immediate family, is somewhat smaller.

It's not until your wheels kiss the pavement at Atsugi that you realize what being the first wyvern in theater means- the Japanese side of the base seems to have all turned out to cheer at Muninn as you touch down, Wendy right ahead of you. Guided by the link, she controls her Valkyrie expertly, slowing down at the exact same rate as you. You taxi to a halt on the pad- you'll be flying more sorties today, and there's no point in wasting the time to get you in and out of the hardned shelter every time.

"It will be rather difficult to not let this sort of reception get the better of us." Kyou says as you shut down- over the intercom, instead of the link.

"You get used to it eventually." Wendy offers. "It can become something of a bother, actually."

You have to admit you're kind of hoping she's right- Dad was a popular hero, of course, but you don't think it was anything quite like this- and Maman did everything in the dark 'cept foah wat she wan to', according to her- people knew her name, but never cheered for her.

"I cannot help but wonder how Frank Bishop handled it." Kyou says as she finishes the shutdown and Muninn goes into hybernation. The ground crew is already moving to hook up the umbilical lines, and the wheel blocks have already been put in place. "Did he ever share his secret with you, Morgan? He never struck me as the kind to let his ego become too large, even with adoring crowds."

[] Wendy would know better than me, I never asked.
[] I don't think dad can have that problem. He's just not got the ego in the first place.

I think that's probably the thing that stands out the most about Frank.

By the end of the war the guy is the literal poster boy of the Navy. A decorated war hero, a kill count that stretches into the triple digits, able to down witches with almost contemptuous ease, known to single handedly turn the tide of battles, saved the world from nuclear Armageddon.

Oh and a literal harem of drop dead gorgeous witches, who are themselves decorated war heroes/royalty, and unlike nearly every fictional example they all get along just fine.

I think almost anyone else would be at least a bit smug about everything he achieved in the span of 3 years. Frank is abnormally easy-going about all of this.
>>
[x] I don't think dad can have that problem. He's just not got the ego in the first place.

You shake your head, pulling your helmet off as you do so and standing up- you have to reach for the rim of the canopy for a second, your legs are a little stiff and kind of unsteady, but it quickly passes. "I don't think dad can have that problem." You say, climbing out of the cockpit and heading down the ladder. You wait for Kyou to follow suit- careful to avoid staring at her as she climbs down the ladder above you. "He's just not got the ego for it."

She nods. "An admirable trait." She admits. Wendy, already out of her own craft and walking over to join you, hears it and smiles faintly.

"Or a quite frustrating one." She says. Kyou looks over at the older witch. "Sir Frank is quite incredible, and it wouldn't be out of place for him to admit it occasionally. Instead he prefers to give all credit to his associates and crewmates."

Kyou smiles. "Don't think that because we are not like him that you will escape notice." She warns the older witch. "Clearly, you will be an important part of our tale as well. I am sure even now the military otaku are doing as much as they can to learn as much as they can about you."

Wendy blinks at that- and a look of growing embarrassment appears on her face. "E-everything?" She asks, and Kyou nods cheerfully.

"Everything, I'm sure." the princess responds. "Don't let it bother you. They have done the same to myself, and Morgan I am sure."

Any further conversation is cut short by the arrival of support vehicles- and a ride for you, you assume. You're quickly proven right as you're instructed to pile into one of the ever-present utility vehicles and driven across the pad back to operations.

Inside you're quickly ushered into a briefing room, where you sit for a few minutes before the base commander- you still haven't gotten his name- walks in, along with his imperial liaison. Because the base is shared- technically, the USN operates here by permission of the imperial military and the emperor himself- the CO has to have a Japanese attache who works with him. In this case, the younger man, wearing the pins of an air force Tai-i, roughly equivalent to Lieutenant senior grade in the navy, walks in behind the American officer. You don't recognize the man- but he recognizes Kyou instantly, and bows.

1/2
>>
"We're getting preliminary reports from the units in Seoul already." The CO says. "They report they were able to get out in good order, and they're pushing east at best speed. They're going to try to evac Chuncheon by land." He pulls up a map as he speaks, and you note how it's already changed- Incheon and Seoul are noted in red as being occupied, while Chuncheon is now a small island in an area of much fainter crimson- surrounded. The retreating forces from Seoul appear as a single rectangle of a battalion sized-element, with their route marked for you. You note there's another unit already in Chuncheon- listed as a ROK army battalion, given their position, you imagine they're in pretty bad shape.

"Chuncheon had significant hardened defenses and antiaircraft support." The commander continues. "Not enough to cover the evacuation by air, but enough to keep strikes there from going in. They're reporting critically low ammunition for their Antiaircraft systems now, and they're down to one radar set. They've said they'll hold out till the academy can be evacuated."

"Were they there initially?" Kyou asks. The commander shakes his head. "They're from further north, the unit assigned to Chuncheon withdrew already. Miscommunication."

Kyou looks more than a little angry at that, but holds her tongue.

"I'm tasking you to provide cover to the Chuncheon corridor till they can evacuate south by land to Hoengseong. That's south of the current defense line by a couple of miles. From there you'll be riding shotgun for a transport bird with wounded and witches that's going to Uljin airport, on the coast. They'll be evacuated via ship from there."

"One more thing." he says. "Because of the state of war, you're the only north asian drake, at least for now. No estimate on when we'll see any more, which means none are on the way."

"So we're the only wyvern in Japan?" Kyou asks, and the commander nods. "For now, yes. I've been asked to relay that your crew is en route now, they should be down in country within the next sixteen hours. I'm also told Admiral Wells is with them."

Kyou looks over at you, then back at the commander and nods. "That is welcome news."

"I'll have the ordinance crews rearm you as fast as they can." The commander says, ignoring the comment. "Figure no more than twenty minutes to get some chow and hit the heads. You're going into a mixed threat environment, what sort of load you think you'll need?"

[] Air to Air- the ground troops are in good enough position they'll be able to fight it out. We need to own that airspace
[] Mixed payload- Missiles in the VLS and FAST, bombs where they'll fit. We're going to have to provide all the support we can- that korean unit is probably just about fought out.
[] Air to ground- We're plenty deadly to air threats, and the VLS can't carry air to ground weapons anyway. Load everything we can for air-to-mud.

Ok gents, votes called! This might be our last update for the evening- I have a long day tomorrow, haha!
>>
[x] Mixed payload- Missiles in the VLS and FAST, bombs where they'll fit. We're going to have to provide all the support we can- that korean unit is probably just about fought out.

"We'll mix our payload." You say, after thinking a bit. "Missiles in FAST and the VLS, air to ground everywhere else."

The commander nods, then looks over at his adjutant- the Japanese man nods and hustles out of the room to make the call. "It's mostly going to be free-fall weaponry. Most of my tomcats are flying with mixed loads and I didn't have that many Mavericks to begin with. Plenty of CBUs though."

You nod- you're used to them, at least reasonably, after your training and trial flights.
"Alright. Go down to the mess hall in the building and get something, hit the head if you need to. Don't leave ops. Dismissed."

You nod, standing up. Kyou and Wendy mirror the move. The commander steps out into the hallway first, while Kyou looks over at you. "I could eat." She says with a faint smile. "I suspect life will be interesting, at least for now."

Wendy nods. "I imagine so." She says, then smiles. "Your father and I sat alert for some time in Poland when the night witches were flying. Before that, I was required to be the ready-five witch at my posting for almost a month. It was quite difficult, but it was managable."

"Almost a month?" Kyou asks, frowning. "How is that even possible?"

"Oh, I lived in the ready shack and rarely left it." Wendy says. "It took some time getting used to bathing that quickly, but I managed well enough. It helped I wasn't going into public much, I should imagine."

Kyou shakes her head. "I can't imagine. "

Wendy smiles. "I think it would be somewhat easier to make a repeat performance though, should it be required of us. At least I could show you how to quickly wash up and be constantly ready for action."

Kyou looks at the older witch for a minute, then smiles. "Lewd."

Wendy blinks- then blushes purple. "I- " She stammers for a minute. "I didn't mean it like that." She says, eventually.

Kyou laughs. "It's alright, Wendy."

>>
You shake your head- you don't dare comment, since you'll probably just make it worse. "We should go eat." You say, getting nods from Kyou and, eventually, one from Wendy. You walk between the older witch and Kyou- something that Wendy seems both grateful for and slightly unhappy at- like she's glad you're making sure Kyou can't embarrass her again, but slightly bothered by. You can't read her nearly as well as you can Kyou, yet- and for her part, the Princess has already moved on, though you imagine she'll apologize to Wendy in a little bit, after Wendy's calmed down a bit.

The chow line is relatively empty- just a few office crew getting meals to take back up to their desks. The declaration of war dumped a lot of work on everyone- weapons need to be brought up from the arsenals and depots, aircraft at rear echelon facilities need to be accounted for and brought back online as quickly as possible, and dependents need to be sent home as quickly as possible.

The three of you take a seat at one of the tables, your food in front of you. For her part, Wendy sits next to you- a little closer than she otherwise might, you note- while Kyou sits across from you, her eyes boring into you. "Do you think we made the correct choice?" She asks, after a minute.

"Going to Seoul?" You ask, and she nods.

"The forces at Inchon were almost completely destroyed." She says, after a minute. "Muninn pulled it from the net as we shut down. That was an infantry brigade from the army, and a Korean battalion."
You're not sure- but you've always, always been told by maman that second-guessing yourself is a luxury you'll never have. She'd meant it in a different manner, of course- you'd just lost the Army-Navy game by a field goal, and you were running back over every missed play, every botched throw and every time you'd had to scramble out of the pocket.

"Boy, ya eat yaself alive playin what if." She'd said. "You play de han ya have an ya be doin de bes ya can wid it."

You're aware, now, that that, like so many other things you'd been told by Maman, was a life lesson. You can't play what if- all too often it's a self-defeating spiral. You worry about learning from mistakes, and that's as far as it needs to go.

[] If we had, the troops at Chuncheon wouldn't have had a chance like they do now.
[] Maybe we could have done more. We'll have to try harder.
>>
That's gonna be it for me for the evening gents! I'll be unloading christmas trees tomorrow.. haha.. ah. well, at least it pays.

Hey gents! Fast update. Looks like I'll be working quite a bit- so IDK if i'll even have reliable free days.

I think what we can do is go to a really short run a little more often- something like 1-2 updates a day after I get off the lot, at least till the end of the season. I kinda didn't plan real well, or we'd have been at a good point to go either on a break (not a hiatus!) or something, but such is life, I guess, haha!

[x] If we had, the troops at Chuncheon wouldn't have had a chance like they do now.

You shake your head. "If we had covered Inchon, the troops at Chuncheon wouldn't have had the chance they have now." You point out.

Kyou looks ready to argue the point- you're sure she's convinced that you could have, somehow, saved them all- when Wendy speaks up, backing your statement.

"Morgan is right." She says- quietly, as she's still blushing a bit- though clearly she's not entirely incapable of speech. "Not even Sir Frank could have managed it, and you flew as ably as he would have."

Kyou shakes her head, but doesn't respond. "I will trust your judgment, but I feel as if we failed regardless." Kyou says.

Wendy nods. "I understand, but you mustn't dwell on it." She insists. "Overexerting yourself because you feel as if you must is dangerous to yourself and could mean failing a mission simply because you'd stretched yourself too thin to accomplish what you set out to do. Even Sir Frank wasn't invincible. "

Kyou looks over at the older witch. "They had to use a nuclear device against him." She says.

Wendy shakes her head. "Stasya and Lilya didn't." She responds.

Kyou's eyes narrow. "But he adopted them." She says- the story is well known- how your sisters flew for the soviet union as part of project 771- a wartime program that, perhaps ironically, spurred Merlin's deep involvement with the wyvern and it's VDNI and later MIU systems. What's less known is the details- specifically, how Stasya and Lilya forced your father to kill himself to outfly them, and it was down to Ice getting incredibly lucky that kept him on this side.

Wendy nods, then looks over at you- seeking permission, you suppose, to speak about your family. You give a slight nod.

"He did, but only because Tabitha took an incredible risk on his behalf." She says. "They were able to push him beyond his limit at the height of his wartime ability."

"But he accomplished his mission?" Kyou insists.

Wendy nods. "But he would have failed had he failed in being able to fly against them as long as he did. Sir Frank didn't have to spare them- and had they defeated him, they carried more than enough firepower to make sure very little on that base survived."

Kyou hesitates. "But he was victorious in the end." She says. "And he did accomplish his mission."

1/2
>>
"But he risked it by attempting to save everyone." Wendy responds. "And he nearly killed himself doing it. Had he instead decided to destroy their aircraft, he wouldn't have been so badly injured. And had that happened, he'd have been available in Poland, and potentially saved many more lives there."

Kyou pauses for a long minute before eventually nodding. "I see the wisdom in what you're saying, Wendy." She says.

Wendy smiles a little. "I've been fortunate enough to fly next to heroes enough to recognize them." She says. "I'm just glad I'm able to fly alongside two more again."

Your watch beeps at the same time as Wendy's- chow's over. Kyou looks at you breifly before shifting her attention back to Wendy. "Do you think they'll be prepared for us this time?" She asks.

Wendy hesitates. "I'm afraid I'm not sure." She says. "I didn't fly against the Chinese in the last war, and I'm as in the dark as anyone else about their capabilities. Perhaps S- ah, Morgan has a better idea?"

You shrug. You've made passing study about the Chinese military's quote-unquote 'rebirth' since the war, and it's hard to tell. On the one hand, a lot of the old doctrinal issues that prevented quick reactions and decision making are gone, but on the other, so are most of their experienced officers, and given their expansion, it's difficult to imagine them maintaining a high quality in their newer officer corps. Still, underestimating an opponent is deadly- something both your folks have hammered into your head.

[] We have to assume they will be.
[] Probably not, but I don't think they're going to be sitting ducks again.

There’s no reason to think that they won’t be. And now that they know there’s a drake in theater I’m almost certain we will be seeing enemy witches.
>>
>>3939760

Without a doubt, we did excellent in our first sortie. But also neatly let the cat out of the bag that a Drake is in theater. We might be encountering Fandances soon.

>>

>[] We have to assume they will be.
I'm guessing Chuncheon is a trap.

The Chinese changed their plan once they knew a drake was in theater and have been holding back the final assault on Chuncheon because it is the next logical drake mission.

The only question is how many SAMs and witches they can pull together in the time we've given them.
>>
>>3940422
Why not both? Maybe they'll bring a SAM Witch.

OTOH, Morgan would probably eat them for breakfast.
>>

>>3939177
>[X] We have to assume they will be.

They'd have to be pretty blind to not notice something like a dozen aircraft dying in the space of a few minutes.
>>
>>3940610
it was closer to 2 dozen, even. losing that many with no losses inflicted on the enemy, they'd be stupidly inept to not call in the cavalry.
>>
>>3940619
I know, but I was low balling it because the PLAAF would probably attribute a few of those losses to ground fire or something, at least initially, as this is the first time a US Wyvern saw action in the theater.
>>
>>3940635
That's fair. I hadn't thought of that probability.
>>
>>3940619
>>3940635
Come to think of it, it should be worth noting the Chinese probably don't know it's 'us'. We didn't use Kyou's shield once at Seoul, so we've got that going for us. They'll be planning for a Wyvern if they're smart, but not our Wyvern...

Also, I'd assume the Chinese don't know we're the only Wyvern here for now, otherwise they'd have kept up the momentum everywhere we weren't.
> there's already some effects of your presence showing up- Chinese aircraft aren't pushing nearly as hard into contested airspace
>>
Ok gents! votes called!

Also, because we're looking at just 1-2 updates a day, we probably will only go to a new thread when we need to due to the active one falling off the board, at least for now.
>>
[x] We have to assume they will be.

"We have to assume they will be." You respond. While the Chinese military isn't thought of as being particularly competent, the losses over Seoul are almost sure to have been noticed- especially the loss of the J-20s.

Kyou nods, standing up and leading the way out of the small mess hall. You're quickly moved out to the flight line- you're recognizable enough that most of the personnel here know where you need to be- and how quickly you need to get there.

The ground crew has already been working- even a s you approach, you can see the pylons are hung on Muninn's wings, and there's a mixed bomb load on them. Paired Mk,77s hang below the outer pylons, while the middle and inner pairs both carry four Mk.20 cluster bombs on each pylon- a total of sixteen. While far from suitable for killing individual tanks, it'll put a lot of hurt on any concentrations the Chinese have in your AO. Your walkaround is quick- you barely even glance into the open bays, noting that they, too, contain bombs- probably 500lb GBU-54/b units- Laser JDAMS, which are more than powerful enough to destroy a tank by themselves, but you'll only have 8 total loaded- four in each bay. The FAST packs don't even look like they were unloaded from your last flight- you count 8 sidewinders in each. You can't see up into the VLS, but the presence of a crane indicated it's been reloaded- at least partially.

The airfield itself seems empty- with every fighter on missions, the only aircraft still on the ground are either ones decertified for flight- there's a pair of tomcats here, both of which are grounded, though there's crews working on both- and a handful of transports- in this case, a pair of Marine C-130s.

Climbing back up into the cockpit, you strap in quickly and seat your helmet on, somehow glad to have Muninn and Kyou back in your head. Both of them are busy with their own checks, of course, so you double-check your weapons list. The VLS was indeed reloaded- though the spent cells were reloaded with quad-packed IJN Python-5 missiles. It leaves a slightly odd mix- you've got 12 pythons in the cells, plus 12 unspent ESSMs in their cells as well. Both your guns are still loaded- there wasn't time enough to change the ammunition drums out.

"It occurs to me," Kyou says, as you begin taxiing to the runway, "That we still have not decided on a paint scheme."

"Oh boy." Muninn says, sarcastically. "Always wonderful when your parents are talking about picking out your clothes."

"Have you given any thought to it?" Kyou asks.

"I can." Muninn responds.

"That is not what I asked." Kyou says- she sounds kind of amused, more by Muninn thinking it gets a vote than anything else.

"Maybe Morgan will side with me. He's reasonable." Muninn states, and Kyou laughs.

"Morgan, what do you think?" Kyou says. "Should we allow our aircraft to determine it's own paint scheme?"

[X] "Actually I got my own idea for the paint scheme"

I agree with this, I was actually thinking of something not exactly low key but sort of interesting too.

The main color is pained in the same type of black as the P-61 Black Widow, it would allow us to blend in with the night pretty damn well, with the identification stuff stenciled on in white to balance these colors out the aircraft's spine, the tips, leading edges, and trailing edges of the Wings, Canards, and aft stabilizers are painted bright red.

Their is a lot of symbolism in this paint-scheme given that our mom is The Mother of the Night after all not to mention Muninn is named after a Raven in Norse Mythology after all, also our SIO is Japanese hence the red, the identification stuff in white is so that it can be spotted easily among the paint.

So thoughts?
>>
>>3940951
Nah.
I'm more for something more Art Deco. Main color black, gold geometric patterns. Honestly would probably look super nice.
>>
>>3940966
>>3940951
Or failing that, just go full on SR-71. Matte black primary, red tail code and lining and shit. Maybe with a wolf maw painted on the front, like something out of the old 1940s Peter and the Wolf.
>>
>>3940966

It sort of would form an interesting geometric pattern when the wings shift and even then, the the color is located along the tips, leading edge, and trailing edges of the canards, wings, and stabilizers (along with maybe the articulation joints) are painted red; an interesting geometric shape and one that will become very interesting as the wings transition.

[x] We'll let Muninn have a voice in the decision, I guess.

"We'll let Muninn have a voice in the decision, I guess." You respond, wheeling around the taxiway and onto the runway.

"Oh, gee, thanks." The AI replies sarcastically.

Privately, you're glad Muninn's in a good mood- even the quips aren't that bad when balanced against events- that Muninn and Kyou are in high enough spirits to even have this sort of discussion in the opening moves of a devastating attack is encouraging. It's when people are sullen and withdrawn that you start to worry about their mental state.

Wendy, quiet the entire time, swings around you, her little fighter accelerating down the runway seemingly without pause. You go right behind her- Muninn taking a bit longer to gain speed, but it still pushes you back in your ejection seat. Still- it's far more gentle than a catapult launch would be, and you rotate up and away from the runway.

"Gear up and locked." Kyou calls- unnecessary, but still part of her role regardless. "Take heading two-seven-three for Ulsan and climb to angels ten. Transponder off."

You nod, pulling the stick back and climbing to the assigned height- and reaching out to shut off your broadcast transponder. From here on in, your passive IFF tag- and your link to the network- will protect you from friendly fire more than anything else. Of course, anything shot at you isn't necessarily a major threat, between your own maneuverability, defensive electronic suite, and Kyou's shield.

There's more IJN ships in the sea of japan already, just off the coast as you cross it near Sakaiminato. The small city itself boasts a couple SAM sites, their search radars marking them as IJA type 03 units - and one of Japan's many AEGIS Ashore posts, linked to a trio of 32-cell launchers. You know most of the cities along the western end of Japan- and almost all of the cities on Hokkaido- boast similar emplaced defenses, all operated by the IJN. Combined, the radar picture is incredible- and nearly impenetrable for a conventional or stealth aircraft or munition.

>>
The Korean peninsula's situation hasn't changed- You were barely on the ground forty minutes, if that, and while a lot has happened, strategically the picture hasn't changed much. Inchon is gone, now- fully occupied, and Seoul is undefended with Chinese and North Korean assets rolling in. The air picture hasn't changed much either- anything operating north of Cheongju is in hostile airspace. Anything north of Wonju is effectively closed- layered Chinese antiaircraft systems seeing to it that nothing can operate there. You suspect Danielle's talents might be needed to break into there properly- at least, once the Chinese blitz slows down and their defenses start really building up.

For now, though, you cross the unofficial line of departure and into hostile airspace almost without notice- you drop down to a little over seven thousand feet, and accelerate up to high subsonic speeds- with the unprotected ordinance on the pylons, you can't break the speed of sound without risking inerting the weapons.

"I've got a line to the troops on the ground." Kyou says as you approach Cuncheon. "Tai-sa Takahashi, 75 infantry regiment of the 19th division."

"Communication is going to be problematic to maintain." Muninn warns. "There's a lot of jamming and interference out here, some of it I can't source."

"I can focus on communications if you wish." Kyou says, quickly. "It won't affect my ability to assist in a fight, and may prove beneficial for the troops morale."

[x] Yeah, it might do them some good. do it.

"Do it." You respond- the airspace here isn't nearly the mess Seoul was- in fact, it's almost empty.

Kyou starts talking- her voice calm but energetic enough to indicate that, whatever the trouble is, she's more than capable of tackling it. The Tai-sa sounds harried- you can hear heavy MG fire and the occasional thump of a heavier cannon firing, all of it matched by ballistic tracks overlaid by Muninn. His MCVs are engaging the leading Chinese elements while his dismounted infantry, with the Korean troops folded in, are establishing a hasty defensive line running east to west across the river on the southern side of the city. Slightly further to their south, you pick up the presence of about a company's worth of troops. That's one of the two southern Korean witch academies, you know- the other, still safe, is in Busan.

The local air defense network is sparse- just a few of the 'high mobility' K2 SPAAG systems providing the majority of the air cover and all of the radar network- and their radars are somewhat weak for area defense, only being designed for local, short-range work against helicopters and drones. Still, there's a lack of Chinese targets- even at extreme range, you're only passively detecting a few over Incheon- and even then, far less than you encountered over Seoul. You wonder if they'd sent everything they had up in one hammerblow- while it would leave them in danger of being unable to control the airspace completely, it would have also afforded them the chance to destroy any hostile aircraft on the ground.

"The Tai-sa welcomes our presence." Kyou says, as you bank low over the buildings, tracking the few points of ground fire that head you way. There's nothing threatening in there- small arms, mostly, one medium machine gun, you think- nothing bigger than that though. "He's got a composite company-strength unit evacuating the academy now, they estimate about fifteen minutes. He's got another six such units of varying strength along his defensive line and two in reserve." She pauses. "He's suffered perhaps fifty percent casualties, and has combined his command with the local Korean garrison. He estimates he can hold his position for perhaps an hour under current conditions."

>>
"It's going to get worse." Muninn warns. "Satellites tracking a large armored force heading this way, and significant air assets inbound across the Yellow sea."

"We can deal with them." Kyou responds. "We must cover this airspace long enough for these troops to withdraw to a safe location. Our priority should be the immediate destruction of the armored forces. If we can create enough destruction among them, the Tai-sa will be able to disengage and withdraw in good order, and we may pull the incoming aircraft to ourselves."

"They're not going to get caught unaware again." Muninn warns as you pull the Wyvern into a turn along a more or less northerly heading. "If we stay low and orbit near here, we'll be able to ambush the incoming aircraft without them being able to engage first."

"Which leaves the troops needlessly exposed to the Chinese armor." Kyou counters. "We must engage the tanks as quickly as possible to give them the time they require."

[] Kyou's right- we've got to engage that armor now, try to slow it down a little
[] Muninn's right- The troops are just going to have to hold on, we can't let those fighters dictate the opening engagement to us when they arrive.

I mean, I wouldn't mind going with some variant of the Phoenix paint scheme, maybe something like this:

The tips of the wings, canards, and stabilizers have black paint, while the rest of the aircraft's body is painted in a White alumina effect pigment (if you've ever seen Pearl White, its like that but using Alumina flakes), the leading and trailing edges of the wings, canards, and stabilizers are dark purple, while running down the spine of the aircraft and extending out into the wings is a coating of red, orange, and gold paint.

I still think we can use the Phoenix emblem at least on whatever, can even be recolored easily for whatever paint scheme. Though if we go full awoo I got an idea for that emblem too.

I'm shooping a pair of completely different Phoenix variants since I got free time, one a combination of the standard F-14 scheme and the AC2 Phoenix/Scarface scheme and another inspired by that Su-33 I posted earlier except a bit more uniform. I'm digging it so far. Still working on it though, need to spruce up a bit more.
Keep in mind I'm no professional and too fucking lazy to get the perspective exactly right on the side view

Also if you hate the decals, good news, they're on separate layers. Got at least two other nosearts in progress, one's the AC2 "simple" Scar/Phoenix head on the nose and another one and it's decals inspired by the markings of VF-1

[x] Kyou's right- we've got to engage that armor now, try to slow it down a little

Kyou's right, you realize- the Tai-sa's troops are in no shape to handle all the armor you're tracking, and even if they're able to dictate the opening moves, the Chinese fighters are still going to struggle against you with Kyou's shields factored in.

"What's our best track to hit as much of that armor as possible?" You ask.

"The lead elements are already inside the city limits." Muninn responds. "But they're concentrated on the ChuncheonSunwhan road heading north and south along here-" The AI punctuates the statement by dumping the information directly into your mind via the MIU- "And the Basedanggang road nearby. Additional elements are on the highway to the east, and there's a large flanking force moving along four-oh-three to the west."

"We won't have time to engage them both." Kyou states, flatly. "Their aircraft will be here before that, and we don't have the proper payload to do enough damage to both forces quickly enough."

"And they'll be engaging before that anyway." Muninn adds.

You speed-review the information you have- and you have to agree. The northern force is by far the larger, but it's going to run straight into the Japanese and Korean defense line. The smaller western force, though, threatens both the flank and the troops evacuating the academy. You estimate, assuming the best-case scenario, the northern force will be able to penetrate and overrun the defense line in about twenty minutes- less, if they get lucky. More if your estimates of the 75th's antitank weaponry was low. The flanking force, though, will be all over the academy in about ten minutes- and there's no way a composite infantry company is going to be able to handle what looks to be about a battalion of armor.

"I can help." Wendy states. "The valkyrie might not be able to destroy tanks as easily as a wyvern, but I rather think I can disable them and damage any support vehicles. It may slow them down some. I could also screen your attacks from the Chinese aircraft and perhaps allow you time to perform further attacks on the tanks."

You can feel Kyou's disapproval. "That's too risky." She responds. "We must assume they're aware of us, and have prepared."

"For a wyvern." Wendy says. "Perhaps I will be enough of a surprise they'll withdraw."

"I would still rather not take that risk." Kyou responds. "If you support our attacks in close, we'll be able to do additional damage to them. That may compensate for our limited time."

"We're out of time." Muninn says. "Make the call now."

[] Attack the main force to the north- if the pressure's off, the Tai-sa can detach additional troops to assist against the flankers.
[] Hit the flanking force- That company isn't even going to slow them down, and with a lost flank the rest of the regiment doesn't have a chance.

{} Detach Wendy to harass the incoming aircraft- buy us time to hit the ground targets a bit more
{} Send Wendy to hit the other ground force, try to do some damage.
{} Keep Wendy on your wing and have her make her runs with you- if you can do enough damage fast enough, maybe you can totally eliminate one threat.

Losing a flank is how most routs start.

We can just wreck the flanking force in one or two passes. Wendy can piss off the Chinese armor by shooting tracks or otherwise disabling the tanks. Even if she doesn't kill them, it should set them up for a follow up shot from the IJA and SK AT weapons.

No update tonight gents- I've got an essay due, so I wanted to get that knocked out. One for sure tomorrow though!

Understandable. You can do it Ghost!

Ok, votes called!

Just the one update tonight gents, for a one man 'quiet' lot, I've sold fully half my stock in three days. haha. Quiet it ain't.

[x] Hit the flanking force- That company isn't even going to slow them down, and with a lost flank the rest of the regiment doesn't have a chance.
{x} Send Wendy to hit the other ground force, try to do some damage.

"Wendy, detach and hit the main force." You order- she peels off instantly, her afterburners lighting as she heads to the north while you bank to the east. "We're going to hit the flanking force."

"Mixed surface to air threats." Muninn responds- you can already feel your awareness expanding as the AI begins dumping data into your head via the MIU. "Mostly self-propelled guns, a few mobile SAM systems. all short-range."

"Our bomb load is acceptable for attacking armor and thin-skinned vehicles." Muninn notes. "The Mark Seventy-sevens will destroy trucks and most light armor and may damage the tanks, but our Mark twenties are our best weapon for attacking armor."

"We must be careful with the incendiary bombs." Kyou notes. "This close to the city especially."

By then, you're already making a fast pass near the column of armor. A few shots come your way- optically-guided SPAAGs, probably, though ones with admittedly quick crews. The battalion estimate was low, though- you make at least a regimental sized force moving down the road, mostly composed of Type 96 tanks- indigenous, post-war Chinese built MBTs, rumored to be roughly comparable to wartime Abrams models, and what looks to be a few companies of T-90s- Soviet-built armor that's nonetheless in service with China fairly extensively. the SPAAG fire is marked as 35mm shells- hardly a threat, at least not from as few guns as are firing- but it marks the platforms as type 9 SPAAGS, probably.

The tanks are accompanied by A large number of tracked APCs and IFVs- enough so that the force you're looking at is almost as large as the main force, if more constrained by terrain. That works to your favor- You begin your first attack run from the north, pickling off a pair of Mk. 20 Cluster bombs into a concentration of armor and IFVs, and dropping a Mk.77 incendiary across another platoon of armor. The Mk.20s, designed for this kind of work, destroy at least one tank with an ammunition detonation- you see the turret pop off like a champagne cork- and disable about three more for sure, while the IFVs slew to a halt. Two of them are burning, while infantry pile out and start to move up the hillside for cover under the trees.

"They're going to try to cut off the evacuation route." Kyou warns. "Across the bridges here. If they cross they'll be able to cut the roads to the south."

You don't respond, pulling Muninn around into a hard turn and hitting the trigger for your cannons- two more tanks, both in the impact area, shudder to a stop, their surviving crew bailing out of the stricken vehicles. The entire force has slowed down now, dispersing as much as they can in the narrow terrain, the SPAAGs gamely trying to bring their radars online and adopt an effective defensive posture.

"Wendy reports at least twelve tanks hit, and three destroyed." Kyou says. "She's able to destroy them from above and behind, but not from other angles."

"We've gotten at least eight destroyed." Muninn says, flashing a brief highlight of the burning wrecks. "And at least that many IFVs. Their lead air elements are about thirty seconds from being able to engage."

That's enough time for another couple runs- though with a pair of burning wrecks blocking the road access to the bridge, the Chinese armor is going to have to slow down enough that you're confident that the 75th can finish it's evacuation of the academy and get out without that flank being endangered. The Chinese armor can take the smaller, closer bridge, but they'll be sitting ducks there- it's barely wide enough for one tank to cross at a time, and there's no room to hide there- they'd have to be suicidal to try it, and if they do you can respond plenty quickly. You're more worried about the main force now- Wendy's slowed them, some, but there's still a significant force up there.

[] These guys are contained, we're going to join Wendy against the main force.
[] We need to make sure the threat here is eliminated.
[] That's going to have to be enough- we want to engage those aircraft further out so they can't hit the 75th.

Dump the last of our bombs on the big mob and then turn to address the air threat

30 seconds should be enough time for a single run to drop our remaining ordinance prior to tangling with Chinese flyers. Last thing we want to do is try to dogfight with a few thousand pounds of dead weight.

Sorry about the late notice gents! No update tonight or tomorrow, had some things come up. I'm expecting us to be on this weird schedule for about 2 more weeks, maybe 3, but then we should be back to normal. I have Wednesday off, so I'm hoping to do at least a short run then.

Hey gents! I know this is kinda a shitbag move, and I'm sorry for pulling it, but I'm going to have to announce a break. Not a Hiatus! As is the tree lot is kinda beating me to hell (more out of shape than I thought) and between that and finals week (Next week) I really don't have the ability to focus on the quest the way I want to, and I'd really rather take a short break than let the already poor quality of my ability to run a quest slip further.

This is not a hiatus. I've got a pretty firm end point for it in mind, and we should pick right back up where we left off around the 18th or 19th this month. Just a couple weeks gents.

Till then, though, Cheers guys! I'll pop into this thread as much as I can to field questions or concerns, as usual, at least till it falls off. But, like I said. The 18th or 19th, by Christmas almost for sure. Hopefully a little before that.

Last time you said it wasn't a hiatus it became a 2-3 year long break instead, though.
>>
>>3952987

yeah, well..

I really mean it this time! haha!

No, really. I do. Like I said, 2, 2 1/2 weeks, somewhere in there. I was told the lot closes up around the 17th or 18th, depending on when they sell out. I intend to be running again around then.
