The Second Grand War dragged on for almost nine years. The Federal State of Gelfborhr pushed east and west simultaneously, its modernized armored divisions and elite troops carving through its comparatively unprepared neighbors. Bogged down in socialist Ephragia in the east and the subsequent overseas landing of the Jacksonian States put paid to it's ambitions. Fatally. Once the greatest power in the world, Gelfborhr saw itself fall to the coalition of its enemies. Further statehood, or even safety for the population, seems unlikely. It is a time of chaos, abuse of power, and despair.

It is a time of occupation. 1/2

It is the year 1948. Gelfborhr's capitol of Galmschkind lies in ruins, years of bombing and months of siege have led to rubble and streets filled with rubble. The city is divided into occupation districts, any organized Gelf resistance having given their guns up weeks ago if not before. But this city, what remains of it, still contains dozens of stories. Some of them will shape the future of the world.

This is the story is of:

>An Officer and a Gentleman: Having nobly lead a section of the King's Own Fusiliers, he is now called upon to lead the Wallsonian delegation to both the other Allied powers and the remaining Gelf Elites.

> The Fanatic: You spilt your blood across the entirety of the eastern front. Ephragia is your blood, and you are Ephragia. Your war is not over no matter what the politicians say. Your comrades have bled, and blood will answer in turn.

> The Detective: A member of an elite National Police Force back home, you have been called in from the Jacksonian States to establish a police force in the chaotic reality of the new Capitol. You are very uneasy.

> The Revenant: You had a name, once. Like your family, your nation, your purpose, your daughter, it has been torn from you. You remember optimism when you first signed on, almost a decade ago. You remember your friends, all scattered dead in the Ephragian tundra. Sometimes you remember a face. Sometimes you remember the war is over. You never remember for long. You know one thing: Gelfbohr will endure. And you will not live to see it.

> Maseille, The Republic of Galle, One Year Ago

Yet another artillery shell hits your position, showering you with dirt and overcoming your battered ears with sheer noise as you desperately attempt to rally your men for the advance. They are as battered, as worn down as you, but you know what duty demands. The right flank of Lord General Vontemout's offensive cannot fail, and your section is as near as you know the last combat effective unit still pushing the enemy back. If you take your objectives, Gelfbohr will by all accounts be forced to capitulate in weeks, and the war will at last be over. More than that, Ephragia may be denied it's prize of the entirety of Gelfbohr's capital, a boon for the rest of the allies who view their erstwhile comrade as a growing threat.

Heady political thoughts leave your head as the newest addition to the section, a Private Lewis, looks to you for guidance with a troubled countenance.

"Worry not lad, this is not my first tilt at the foe." You say in your aristocratic lilt, befitting of the second son of a landed Lord. And there is no lie to your words. It's been some three years since you left home, your mother crying bitter tears as you left to accept your commission. Your father fought in the last war with distinction, you could do no less.

Lewis nods nervously. "Of course, milord, I-I mean Lieutenant de Verne." You give him a reassuring nod despite your nervousness. It's what he needs right now. The rest of your men seem to have steadies themselves for the advance, Evernes bolt actions accompanied by several Karthorn automatic rifles. You grin internally, remembering the unreliable Glach carbines and Iona semiautos of your early service.

No more time to spare, you wave your hand above your head and whistle, your men following you up and out of the defilade in which you were concealed, and charging the Gelf lines in the trees ahead. If everything has gone right, you have a few seconds of surprise before taking fire.
>>
>>5076545

> Owing to your cautious nature, every third man in the section throws a smoke grenade. Certainly discarding stealth, this approach may minimize casualties. (Cautious)

> You let out a cheer in honor of the King, bolstering your men's spirits. (Brave}

> You remain silent, and stalk through the mist ahead, hoping your men are able to follow suit. This will be finished hand to hand. (Bloodthirsty)

> You cannot trust this gaggle of replacements and children to do this alone, you suppress the enemy position with your Alaric SMG, before treating the enemy position to several grenades, and then entering knifefight range. (Glory Hound)

You stalk forward, the Section behind you as you advance, the mist hiding you even as your call of the advance must have been heard. Scant yards from the enemy position your visual cover dissipates.

It's now or never. A burst from your SMG takes the first Gelf soldier in the chest, his semiauto flying through the air as he flails to the ground. You throw a grenade as the section opens up, the blast clearing a machine gun nest that had seconds before cut down three of your men. In a moment you are on them, the butt of your weapon braking the nose and face of a Gelf as your men, bayonets gleaming, impact the remainder of the enemy unit. Your current foe felled, you turn to see a Gelf officer raising his sidearm to your face.

Legal shit settled till court in January. I very much apologize. On the bright side, I'm off the juice, at least for a while.

You swat the barrel aside at the last moment, your free hand burning with the proximity to the muzzle flash as the Gelf pistol discharges to your right. You hear a sharp cry behind your shoulder but have no time to consider it as you bring your Alaric around as a club, bashing the Gelf officer in the head and sending him into the dirt. You don't give him a chance, a quick burst ends his life before he could possibly recover.

It seemed much longer, but apparently the charge was resolved in moments. Your Section has taken losses, of course, but the enemy lies decimated. Those not dead have thrown down their weapons. A sight once so rare when you began your fight in this war, now more common than not. Their spines are nearly broken, and you cannot fully hide your triumphant expression.

But then you hear the wheezing behind you. You turn, and your expression falls. Lewis lies in a pile of pine needles, a neat hole in his throat belying the clearly fatal amount off blood streaming through his pale hands attempting to still the flow.

" L-Lieutenant, s-sir?" You kneel at the boy, hot tears stilled in your eyes. Not because another has died, but because you know why. The boy had stayed close. He had been to your right when you swatted that fated bullet away. Unknowingly, it had been his life for yours.

"I'm here, Lewis, you were brave."

He smiles, his teeth stained crimson as red foam bubbles from his mouth.

"Tell my Da, tell him..." His voice fades, his eyes stare at nothing, nothing but another chunk of flesh on the field of war. You hate the Gelfs, always have since your brother died in the Aelfport Encirclement early on. But at this point, you think you only hate yourself.

No, not you, that's pathetic. For your brother, for your men, for Lewis, they will pay. If you had but the power, you would rend Gelfbohr apart.

You gather the Section, and the dead. Hours later, you make camp. While you and the men sleep, the Gelfbohr Chancellor is dragged out of a bunker and hanged by furious Ephragian troops. As you awake, the war is over.

> One Year Later

You shoot up in your over extravagant bed, sweating. Your hand wipes the sweat from your brow. Same damn dream. Your barely knew Lewis. Was it because he died for nothing? Because he was the last? Because you killed him? Or because the damn Gelfs should have given up before that poor boy ever had to leave his parents' farm.

You remember the letter you wrote them. Heartfelt as any. Only response was from the Post:

RESPONDANTS ARE ILLITERATE

You paid someone to read it to them.

It took a lot of negotiation to get the Ephragians to share Galmschind with the other allies, but they relented when Jacksonian aid, upon which they still heavily relied, was put on the negotiation table. So a sundered capital of a sundered state stood, occupied by numerous foreign powers. Among them your own Wallsonian Kingdom. And in this city you still reside. You would have much rather remained with your Section, showing the Gelf their place in some occupied province or border town. Instead, you learned of your reassignment a week after war's end. Your mother had petitioned the High Command to get you off the front months before your last battle, terrified of losing her last son before he so much as married. Being Lady Castelmarch, her plea held more weight than most. Especially with the death of your brother Martin so early in the war. You took the name De Verne, your commoner Father's, to avoid such complications, but you suppose you could not avoid it forever. Only army bureaucracy held it up, the stuffy Lords in High Command giving you a "Diplomatic" post as the Wallsonian Chief Delegate to the Galmschkind conferences. Even them, you were only transferred three weeks after war's end. So far nothing but stuffy dinners and discomforting encounters with the new class of Gelf "Forward Thinkers". You hate the Gelf, but their turncoats somehow turn your stomach even more. Not an honest man among them.

A knock at the door. Your Adjutant, Cpl. Theles, leans in as you gulp water from your bedstand.

"Missive from Filed Marshal Gordon, sir. Says he needs to see you urgent."

You groan, Gordon is a politician with epaulets, then, so are you now.

"I'll be out shortly, Corporal, thank you."

You get out of bed, putting on the fresh uniform of a Captain, which you were promoted to as a mea culpa for losing your Section, and strapping on your sidearm as is required of all Occupation Authority personnel within Galmschkind.

You take a moment to admire the:

> 44. Break Open Revolver, the classic Wellesley, a Wallsonian classic

> .45 Semi Automatic, a Jacksonian import you grew to respect in the lean years after your brother died with the Wallsonian expedition force

> Gelf S47, A compact semiauto. The weapon of your last kill, and the man who shot Lewis.

The S47 is the go to symbol of "Superior" Gelf engineering. Even you admit it's enhanced utility and lessened weight over the bulky Wellesley revolver you had carried for much of your career. Regardless of its manufacture, it fits comfortably into your holster, a traditional job in the tradition of old cavalry holsters. Loose, but easy to draw from, and has a certain aristocratic flair you appreciate. You have some mixed feelings about the provenance of the weapon, Lewis flashes in your mind, but you remind yourself that is largely why you continue to carry it. You will not forget.

Theles takes you to a staff car waiting in front of the estate house you occupy, formerly the home of a mid level Gelf army officer killed in the intense fighting inside Galmschkind as Ephragia brought the war to it's final end. More house for you, though you share the place with a number of junior officers and their own staff. Theles is young, apparently he saw no combat after being drafted only a few months prior to the end of hostilities. You do admit he has the bearing of someone well heeled, or rather one coming from a family of professional servants like those you remember from the family Estate in your youth. His lack of small talk is a comfort to you as you are ferried about the ruined streets.

You pass dozens of downcast civilians as you are driven to the Field Marshal's office. Some corralled into work crews, digging away at the endless piles of rubble that still block streets and prevent efforts at redevelopment. Many more simply loiter, the forlorn looks of the utterly defeated upon their faces. You can't summon much sympathy, this is exactly what Gelfbohr brought to the rest of the world, without second thought.

It's about ten minutes before you arrive, you send Theles away, letting him get some breakfast while you meet with the Field Marshall. The guards at the door of the palatial estate, once home of the Gelf Propaganda Minister, do a cursory check of your ID and stated business before ushering you inside. The HQ of Wallsonian Occupation Authority as well as the Field Marshall's own quarters, the building is unsurprisingly bustling as you enter and take the stairway in the foyer on your way to Gordon's office upstairs.

His man is expecting you, and ushers you in the moment you arrive. You salute, as is required, and Gordon returns it without standing. His corpulence probably would not allow it.

"At ease, Captain." He grunts.

"Sir." You reply, wanting this interaction over quickly.

"I've been told to find a use for you by the Home Office, and I have just the thing. Some of the more amenable Gelfs are holding a banquet for the allied forced at the old Chancellor's Mansion. You will be our man there, representing the Wallsonian Kingdom in all it's Glory and Prestige. I take it a well bred man such as yourself can manage?" He smirks, clearly aware this kind of event is outside your zone of comfort,
>>
>>5090676
Social gatherings, your anathema. Social gatherings with fucking Gelfs? Even worse. Still, this wasn't really a question.

"Of course, Sir." You say the only viable response.

He smiles again. "Very well Captain, my man will hand you the address and some other details. Do represent the Kingdom well, no?" Your fists clench. This stuffed shirt has it coming.

You nod affirmation and turn on a heel as the Field Marshall returns to his paperwork. His man outside hands you a card with a formal invitation to the banquet held by "Galmschkinders for Democracy" and held at the old Chancellery Mansion. Looks like you'll be mingling with Jacksonians and Ephragians alongside the Gelf rabble. Damn it all. This is not what you signed up for.

Still, as you leave, some options rise in your head as you see Theles returning behind the wheel of the staff car.

You have some contacts with intelligence and even in the other Occupying powers' militaries from joint service in your campaigns.. Contacts are only worth it if called in so you see no reason not to as you are taken back to your quarters, some hours to go before you are expected at the Gelf Banquet. The Field Marshal did not give you proper notice but you will manage all the same, it's what a gentleman does.

You waste no time at getting in touch with your contacts, starting with Wallsonian Intelligence. You get Captain Caeldaen at the Gelmschcraft office through his direct line. You previously did him a favor in having some of your Section help out a Gallesian resistance cell during your advance towards Gelfbohr months earlier. He is, of course, amenable. But if you call on him again you have no doubt your name will go on a "favors owed" ledger. Intel types are just ungentlemanly like that, nothing to be done for it.

The phone rings twice before it is answered. "Captain Caeldaen, Intelligence."

"Good morning Robert, it's De Verne." You hear a muffled snort over the line. "Informality from the Lord De Verne? You must want something. Calling in that favor from last year?" Well, you probably knew you weren't buttering up a spook. "Something like that, Field Marshal tapped me to attend that Gelf banquet at the the Chancellor's mansion. Need to know the Gelf worthies, anything unpleasant I should know about them, or useful?" You hear his pen tapping on his desk as he considers, a habit of the man you distinctly remember from last year. "Yeah, ill have my man send over some files on the notable ones. It's a big party, I don't have something on everyone, but it will give you a picture. Good luck De Verne, the Field Marshal throws these kind of things around to mess with people, but you didn't hear that from me. There is a click and a tone as he hangs the earpiece back up. Well, it's something. You do have a few more calls to make...

(cont)

Your contact with the Jacksonians is a low level infantry officer you briefly served with during the brief siege of the Gallesian port of Kirlais. You hit it off well those few weeks, and Lt. Greer had promised to stay in touch after war's end.

Your Gallesian contact might be worth contacting, maybe he has some perspective on the Ephragians or Gelf the others may have missed. Commandant Juliard was your man in that op you did with the Resistance for Intelligence.

Finally, you don't have an Ephragian contact, and they tend not to get on with foreign "Kulaks". You have your doubts, but you could call their Delegation and at least make a formal inquiry. Could be useful, could just insult them.

You decide to:

> Pick one or all to call, DC will increase the more branches you shake and there may be diplomatic or personal consequences

> Due the Background, your Wallsonian contact was a freebie

The Gallesian, though I also wouldn't be opposed to contacting the Jacksonians as well, if only for the lore.

Another ring.

"Commandant Julliard."

"Good to hear from you, Commandant, it's Captain De Verne over at the Wallsonian Delegation."

"A pleasure. I imagine it's about the Gelf Banquet?"

"Insightful as usual. I don't know much about who's attending."

"Honestly, me either Captain. For an "Equal Partner" no one seems quick to share information with us. I have had the displeasure of dealing with Colonel-Commissar Zavalny. Vile man, wanted a manifest of our intel assets in land they've retaken from the Gelf. You didn't hear it from me, but I could hear him salivate when he mentioned 'removing possible counter revolutionaries preemptively'. He must have misjudged me, some of my countrymen are amenable to the Ephragian political madness but I am only loyal to the Republic and not extremist dreams of utopia."

You chuckle. "Very well, this was useful. I'll see you tonight, Commandant."

"You will, if I can beat these Gelf harpies off with a stick. I think it's the accent. Farewell."

The phone clicks. You decide to take your lunch out at one of the intact cafes catering to the Occupation Forces, who clearly are some of the only ones with money to spend in the ruined capital. You sip tea and enjoy a simple sandwich brought to you by a pleasantly mannered Gelf probably too young to have been married as the menfolk of her nation were slaughtered at the front. A testament to her professionalism, your glare as she tries to make small talk in broken Wallsonian only makes her drop her smile a moment before she returns to her duties. It is not long before you return, and your man Theles hands you a freshly printed Dossier.

"Courtesy of Intelligence, sir."

Must be what Caeldaen promised. Let's see what he dredged up:

The dossier, when it's brought you, is somewhat of a disappointment. Less detail than you had hoped, but scraps will do in place of a full meal when nothing else is offered.

It takes the form of an itemized list.

Johann Krupt: Host of the gathering. A steel and weapons magnate saved from the post war trials by his recently revealed activity supporting Gelf resistance efforts against the previous regime. Widower, his wife killed in the initial bombing campaigns from the joint Wallsonian and Jacksonian air forces, his remaining family are his daughter and two grown sons. Considered a low security risk, he is believed to be a friend to the rebuilding effort.

Colonel-Commissar Navalny: Head of the Ephragian delegation. A consummate Communist, he and his staff have been putting a large amount of pressure on the Gallesian and Gelf governments to align themselves with the Ephragians punt towards global power.

Frank Bell: The Jacksonian envoy. Unmarried, didn't deploy in the war. Working to develop a police force in Gelmschcraft that can bring order to the current chaos.

Your adjutant apologizes, as more was sent but was not effectively received. There was an issue with the transfer and Intelligence is not answering.
