    I think the wrong term is being used here which is why there is so much contention over Georgie-boy. He stopped being a Comedian in the Mid 80's and started moving toward being a political un-activist to coin a phrase. He preached without preaching 'cause he didn't force anyone to his shows or to buy his books nor were his acts clean enough to show on regular television (or his humor for that matter)

    Carlin isn't a comedian, he's a traditional Fool. The court jester. Not someone who dances around like an idiot but the one man in the royal court allowed to stand on the outside of society and point inward. It makes some people uncomfortable and it makes some people roll their eyes and dismiss it as nothing but he believed in everything he said as his observation. I was there as his last performance and he knew he was dead. The weight on his shoulders of all the terrible shit society has produced ontop of life in general had killed him and yet he still plied his craft one more time. He talked alot about government and corporations and all sorts of things like that but what he didn't say outloud was the real finger was pointed to every last member of his audience who agreed with him and yet would get up out of their seat after the show was over and not do a damn thing about all the things he'd just mentioned. That was the real joke, Just as cynical, bitter, and defeated as he was in the end. He wasn't a profit, he wasn't a man of science, he wasn't a salesman, he wasn't even that much of a comedian anymore. He was just a fool.

    I've always wanted to be a writer. What kid doesn't? I mean, you can dream of ANYTHING, and put it down on a sheet of paper, bam! You're a writer. So when I said I would write a short story, and try and get it published, my friends rolled their eyes. When I gave it a few of them to look at, they laughed at, they laughed at the plot. They laughed at the character. I sent that story to the magazine.

    It took them two and a half months to tell me no.

    But I'm not going to give up. I spent two weeks writing an eleven page story. And I will either spend the next few years seeing rejection letters, or I'll find somebody who likes what I write.

    When I said I wanted to be a Geologist, my friends looked at me and laughed. They asked me "what will you do? You'll be the poor the rest of your life!" I told them the story of a man named Vladamir Obruchev. He may be one of the most famous Russian Geologist's of all time. He is credited with mapping the interior of Central Asia, along with Siberia. Not to mention the numerous scientific articles, or the three books he wrote. (Plutonia, his best, is the first book of his I read. It's a great read, I'll be honest.) He has a mountain named after him, a river, and an award given out every year. Maybe I won't be as good a Geologist as Obruchev, but I can try. I might not get a river, or a mountain, or my own award. But I'll sure as hell try. I know the odds are stacked against me. I don't even like math a whole lot, and a lot of science just has me looking at the professor as if he's an alien. But I want to do this. I want to be a Mineral Exploration Geologist. Sure it might not pay as well as Computer Science. But it'll make me happy. I hope that's enough for this world.

    There's something I want to tell you, and I hope you'll listen, because it's very important to me. This phrase was my mantra for existence during a difficult time in my life. This phrase once inspired feelings I haven't felt in far too long, the same feelings that were rekindled by the content of this thread.
