Pepsi is giving away grant money to a cause that gets the most votes, and one of the ideas in the running is Kanzius Non-invasive R/F therapy, an alternative cancer treatment that looks very promising. Basically what it is, is injecting carbon or gold nanotubes into cancer cells, heating them with radio waves, and thus destroying the cancer cells and leaving the nearby healthy cells intact. Last I heard it was 100% successful when tested on liver cancer in rabbits. Hasn't entered human trials yet though.

    http://www.kanziuscancerresearch.com/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kanzius#Cancer_therapy

It's currently ranked 6th, but only the top 2 spots get the grant money. The ideas that are beating it are fucking stupid as shit and quite selfish to be honest.

    >"To rebuild our grade school that was destroyed in March of 2009."
CRY ME A FUCKING RIVER, JUST GO TO A NEW SCHOOL.

    >"Revitalize my neighborhood with a community center."
    FUCK YOUR COMMUNITY, CURE CANCER

    >"Screamfest Horror Film Festival launching directors & writers careers"
    SERIOUSLY? FUCKING SERIOUSLY?

So anyway if you care about defeating cancer once and for all, please vote here:

Or local government who would rather cut off cancer research funds in order to save a few bucks off the local budget on building a new school? The horror film festival is just a terrible idea.

thats not entirely correct.Cancer is a nightmare disease, but its not a bunch of mutations simultaneously. Its just one. One that makes the cells grow out of control. All those other effects are stuff your cells do naturally.

But in anycase thats also why this treatment is especially promising. It doesn't rely on shutting down a symptom of a mutation to stop the cancer. Nor does it attempt to fix the problem. It eliminates it completely.

Essentially the benefits of radiation (kills all cells, does so quickly, quick recovery) without the drawbacks (nausea, hair loss, potential for more cancer, kills living cells)

Quick line found from Wikipedia " he proto-oncogene can become an oncogene by a relatively small modification of its original function"

A single mutation causes the cell to begin to grow out of control, utilizing methods that are available already and just not being utilized.

Here's some more knowledge for ya.

When you are in vitro, almost all of your cells are Oncogenes. Its not until you reach adolescence that all of them finally turn off. But these cells don't leave, they lie dormant, UNTIL a mutation in the gene that keeps them dormant reactivates them and causes a cancer.

There is not just one way to fuck up something.

If you look at cancers as caused by DNA damage (which I believe they mostly are), then it means that the coding is fucked up.

Now, as a shitty college students just got into programer, I know that there are many ways to fuck up code, and I figure that a particular fucking up of code is a mutation.

But I didn't say that there weren't multiple ways. There are. Thousands in fact.

But for any given cancer there is only one.

The comic made it seem like each tumor had 6-10 diffrent causes and thus could resist diffrent treatments.

But each individual tumor has 1 cause, and generally an effective treatment.

And even then, the comic was pointless, because as I pointed out earlier, this treatment would bypass the restrictions placed by type

OH GOD HE'S QUOTING WIKIPEDIA HIS SCIENCE IS FLAWLESS!

Not sure if troll, assuming you aren't.

News flash, man: an oncogene is just shorthand for a gene that is a prerequisite for cancer.

Cells might have abnormal growth with two or three mutations. It might turn into cancer after 5-6. It might be malignant invasive after 8-9.

These are just random numbers but the method is sound. That said, the rapid division and high error rate of cells that are ALREADY cancerous does tend to select for MORE cancerous cancer given enough time.
    >> Anonymous 04/20/10(Tue)03:32 No.9308821
    >>9308740
    Er.

A mutation, in the programming sense, is a modification to a data structure. Say, the class that contained information about a person starts uninitialized, but as information is read from a file, the contents are modified in place (in memory) to reflect the contents of the file. Or, a list is populated with more elements.

Accidental mutations are a bitch of a bug to find, because unless you know exactly what pieces of code are changing what, you need to keep track of what each variable is at all times. And if you did know that, you probably wouldn't have this bug in first place.

Then there is code mutation, like in polymorphic viruses: a polymorphic computer virus can rewrite its own code, adding a bunch of useless loops and moving code around; the final code is different, but the effects it has are the same. Since the code is different, the hash is different, and it evades detection by AV software.

Finally there is mutation on genetic algorithms, which is used in AI: you have a bunch of solutions, and randomly you change bits of them or splice them together, and pick the best at each generation. That one is like genetic mutation. Except you are the piece of code and you don't get to survive into the next generation, you are just discarded away with cancer.

    Carry on.

I guess my complaints are more about the comic.

Cancer is a naturally-occuring disease, or rather, is constantly occuring in our bodies all the time, all comming down to damage in the DNA. And that damage can occur in any of the ways listed in the comic. Virsues constantly inject their DNA into ours, and can cause cancer. Radiation or other carcinogens can damage the DNA, and cause it. DNA itself wears down over time.

The major problem with cancer is that our body doesn't catch it. When it does, it either outright kills the cells, or forms walls around it to stop it from creating blood vessels (and thus making moles). As we age, our immune system gets worse and the rate at which cells fit that perfect storm of DNA going to shit and every precaution to kill itself fail increase.

Cancer research is an exciting field. Its why I'm studing to become a Genetic Engineer.

I'm sorry it seems there was a misunderstanding.

You seem to be talking about malignant cancer, while I'm talking the tiniest tumor.

And even then the comic is inaccurate since most of the supposed mutations are actually just normal growing cell functions.

Even though multiple failures typically have to accumulate to lead to cancer, I do agree that this does not imply that these "different failures" necessitate different treatments.

If anything, it provides more possible avenues of attack against cancer.

    >A single mutation causes the cell to begin to grow out of control

That depends entirely where the mutation occurs. And what kind of mutation.

Take for example, a frame-shift mutation near the locus of the gene which codes for the "stop" protein in the cell cycle. That changes the ENTIRE genetic code after that point, and causes the cell to become cancerous FAR quicker. A silent mutation (one which does not change whatever amino acid is used in the polypeptide chain for that protein) won't have any effect on the cell.

My point is, there is far more that goes on when a cell goes cancerous than just "its DNA has a mutation." Our DNA is CONSTANTLY mutating, in EVERY cell.

Fun science fact, we have about 3.2 billion nucleotide base pairs. DNA synthesis messes up about once per bllion base pairs. Every time cells devide, there are about 3 new mutations.

tl;dr it is a bunch of fucking mutations since the whole point is the cell is braking down and becomming an ugly cancerous cell you assridden cuntshitter

It's actually quite cheap, and it's not harmful (due to the properties of gold nanocages). Adhesion of organic compounds is quite easy with gold, and you can make such adhesion very inert... not to mention that gold nanocages are already harmless to the human body.

Either way, you contain a drug that seeks out cancer in the gold nanocage, then fire a laser at it (in the same way LASIK works). And then you watch as it heats up intensely, but at a very small, specified space.

Look up this scientific article on an academic database: "Gold nanocages as photothermal transducers for cancer treatment"

This stuff was already done at least 3 years ago. It's certainly past the research phase by now, judging by OP. Glad to see that research got somewhere.

    Eh...
I'm not completely sure cancer getting cured would be a good thing, from an objective point of view, mostly due to the whole overpopulation thing that's occuring.

Maybe if a relative develops it, I'll be less objective and relatively more selfish.

Overpopulation is a self-correcting issue. If the population reaches a level at which it cannot be sustained, people will start dying until it becomes workable.

To say that a cancer treatment could be bad because it will increase population growth isn't "objective", it's fucking moronic.

Do you cure cancer, meaning there's more people starving to death, or do you not cure it, so there's less people starving but more dying from cancer?

There's one issue with your argument: You're not considering anything but cancer and overpopulation to make/break the issue.

If we cure cancer, but overpopulation occurs, it might be something else that stems the tide. A pandemic maybe. War. Famine. Doesn't matter.

The point is, you can't say that it's a 'moral gray area' because it isn't. Beneficial is beneficial, you can't change that by trying to color it differently.

Cure cancer. If overpopulation occurs, it will either fix itself or we will do something about it. It is not our place to quantify wise or poor decisions based on the unforseeable future. This research will help people now. Later too, most likely. But now is the only time to worry about. The future could be anything. 2012 could be the end. 40,000 could be the end. We could all become immortals. Who fucking knows?

So just think about what you're saying before you say it Anon. Judge worthiness based on what you have in front of you, not a manufactured scenario.

You do know cancer is a common cause of death in the west and MEDCs but not so much in LEDCs? You probably won't die of it until your 30s-40s at least. So curing it will simply help people in the west, who have no food problems, and not help people in the developing world, who are the ones with starvation issues.

Acutely, tech has a great opportunity to cure overpopulation.

You see, people with opportunities to get decent jobs, afford good homes, education, food, health care and entertainment don't breed like rabbits. If we can provide a decent standard of living to everybody population growth will slow to a crawl anyway, like it dose in much of the first world's natural population growth, without taking immigration into account.

Fuck, Japan's population growth is acutely negative.

Cause you know, the advanced countries never went through mass deaths or pandemics or anything...

Dude, extract your head from your ass. Countries all develop the same way, basically. If they are resource poor, they usually either push for manufacturing and technology, or they stagnate under oppressive regimes until they finally have a revolution that works. Resource rich countries will rest on their laurels until the shit hits the fan, then scramble to install a manufacturing and technology base to recover from losing their main source of income.

Pick a country. Apply template. That's how it works, for the most part. It's not saying that at all. It's saying that shit happens, you can't plan for it. All you can do is look at what you have, and work with it.

We have the chance to end cancer. Should we? Of course. We've striven to end all manner of diseases and maladies. Why stop now because some funny-in-the-brainpan people think we need sickness to prevent future problems?

What difference does it make how it's phrased? Yes, if, in some speculative future, overpopulation causes a food or water shortage, lots of people will starve to death.

Hey, you know what? If the Earth crashes into the sun, lots of people will die too.

But there is nothing you can do about either of those things. Curing cancer will not magically cause the world population to skyrocket to 12 billion. What it will do, however, is keep a bunch of people alive who would be dead. Which is unilaterally good.

If you disagree with this, it's your civic duty to kill yourself and as many innocent people as possible. Because, in theory, you are slowing population growth.

Or you could help cure cancer. Your choice.

Right, I hope somebody reads this for what it's worth.

Tumors need a capillary network in order to develop.

All capillaries have small holes in for non fat soluble substances to move through ultrafiltration and iffusion.

Capillaries around tumours have larger gaps in them than standard ones. These nanoshells are small enough to fit through the gaps in cancerous capillaries but too big to fit through normal capillaries.

Thus, these shells find their way into the tumor tissue and not healthy tissue.

They are then heated up killing the cancerous tissue but not healthy cells (the heating doesn't even need to be that great since if you think about it a fever above 40 degrees can be fatal).

Sadly I think this is all wasted on you guys.

In uncivilized countries, they ALREADY have starvation due to overpopulation, and few people are dying of cancer.
    Look up "farm towers", too.
The only possible downside to overpopulation is a ridiculous crime rate, and increasingly more homosexuals, which would actually DAMPER the growing population.
Hell, many advanced countries, such as China, Japan, U.K., are at the VERY BOTTOM of the birth-rate chart, while all those shitty, poor-as-fuck, scrabbling-in-the-dirt-for-food countries are producing as many as FIVE TIMES MORE CHILDREN, per woman!

You think that saving some people from a lingering, agonizing death is going to change anything about this?
That those countries where children are born, and die of malnutrition a few months later are suddenly going to get WORSE?
Fuck you, and fuck your sixth-grader logic.

Those people will breed like rabbits, creating more people who are also alive, which is also good. If your species is alive, your species is doing well.

And you still don't get that overpopulation is *inevitable*. At least, it is based on current trends. Slowing it down doesn't do anything for anyone. It's morally identical.

Except for the part where slowing it down involves killing people who are alive. Oops.

Actually, if you look closer at the "current trends", they show that birth rates drop the more developed a country gets. Almost all EU countries, for instance, are actually facing *under*population with the way the birth rates are going.

tl;dr: Solve overpopulation by developing the fuck out of the world.

Poor countries have more kids because they are filled with people. People have sex. People don't have sex to make farmers. People have sex to feel good. Sex without preventative measures means more kids. More kids means more mouths to feed. More mouths means less food to go around. Less food to go around more more crime.

The nanoshells collect around tumors because the blood vessels that are formed to feed the fast growing cancer cells are very abnormal and have a leaky characteristic that let nanoparticles somewhat selectively stay in the the cancerous area.

    http://nanoed.blogspot.com/2009/10/gold-nanoshells.html

The leaky vasculature mumbo jumbo is a fancy way of saying the gaps in cancer capillaries are larger.

I don't support blocking cancer research or anything, I voted for it here.

But, your argument is a little off, simply because they do have cancer problems. They just don't have hospitals or medical personnel or health insurance in the quantity that modern countries do. Thusly it goes unreported more often than not. Hell, life is stressful in a shithole. So you smoke more, drink more, fuck more, etc. This causes problems. They just don't get recorded or reported cause there is no one to take care of it.

This doesn't mean that the argument against the project is validated or anything. It's just not disproven or made weaker by your notion is all.

As an avid arguer and debater, I had to point this out.
