    - Previously on the USN Project Longreach base

    - After the successfull launch of the surveyer 01 satelite the base is visited by a ship calling itself the USN Harrier.
-Demanding landing approval they break orbit and touch down on the launchpad only to be met by transmissions telling them they will be placed under arrest,
    - the USN Harrier attempts an unpreped launch that activated the base defence grid, the high yeild concussive rounds of the base turrets rips holes through their bridge and they carreer off course during their assent.

    - USN Harrier crash lands into a smuldering wreck on the outskirts of the base to the south, security teams dispatched as well as a mechanoid cleanup crew to handle the hazerdous situation.

    - Secure AI core specs arrive via fleet command.
engineering and comunications work together on the new plans to perfect them in preperation for construction.

Holy shit, you're up early. Thank god for weekends.

Get that wreck secured, see if we can't ping FleetCom for some remote surveyor drones to explore the ship interior. I'd imagine there's a fair chance of it undergoing structural failure, and I'd hate to lose a few colonists over such an oversight.

The majority of our base is above ground. In this hostile climate, that's unacceptable. Construct some larger common areas underground. Big enough to house all of our colonists in case of emergency.

The problem of course is that the algae will have to begin its development inside of an atmosphere of some sort. Our robots are of course ensuring safety measures are being handled allowing us to focus on the actual task of digging the earth and ore. Nothing better in life then feeling the dirt in the palm of your hand... We will of course be cutting an offshoot tunnel in which to store 1% of all the minerals we pull from the earth as part of our goal of expansion. To get this mining operation truly off to a great start, I politely request the items listed on the following requisition form."

    *****Incoming message******
    Greetings Longreach base.
This is Tsi Olon, CEO of nearby Station Xerxes.
It has recently come to my attention that ample amounts of:
    -Element 115 - Ununpentium
    -Element 116 - Ununhexium
have been located within exploitable range of your base. I have on good authority also received word that mining and proccesing operations have already been set in motion.
My analysts assure me that it is possible to build and utilize a large mass driver to launch or as they put it "simply sling a packaged metal box like an asteroid" onto a trajectory my station can intercept for further action. With no atmosphere and low gravity this method is substantially cheaper than transport ships.
I am prepared to assist in construction of said mass driver with funds of up to 35% in exchange for the first 600 tons of shipment. And of course exclusivity in trading those two elements for 5 years.

Oh you missunderstand, i have no intention of interfering with USN authorithy. I and my shareholders are merely interested in emergent profits to be had through trading for your mining produce.
True I have been notified about possible legal problems resulting from the fact that the mass driver could be used as a potential capital ship class weapon of mass destruction.
However USN officials assure me that your base is secure and stable, fully capable of dealing with any attempts of being usurped by pirates or raiders.
Thus your colony seems like a good place to invest.

In interest of expediting this process i present to you a visualization of the proposed project.

    Furthermore some technical details:
"A mass driver or electromagnetic catapult is a proposed method of non-rocket spacelaunch which would use a linear motor to accelerate and catapult payloads up to high speeds. All existing and contemplated mass drivers use coils of wire energized by electricity to make electromagnets. Sequential firing of a row of electromagnets accelerates the payload along a path. After leaving the path, the payload continues to move due to inertia."

I understand there have been som troubling issues recently regarding loyalty to the USN. Now, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about but I'm afraid that to enure the continued USN support of this outpost you will now have to abide by Subsection 6928-B of the USN COMMS CONDUCT GUIDE, which states:
"All communications are to be ended with an appropriate and recognizable word or phrase that signals that the communication has ended."
As the appointed Morale Officer of this colony I will enforce the subsection and ask that the phrase "LONG LIVE THE USN" be considered.

    Ahem. Here goes:

Business as usual, more colonists and more habs pop up.

One vessel lands for repairs, gives us cobalt. Turns out they're pirates. Apart from a bad reputation, they also leave behind a rogue AI, which ends up crashing our own.

Then another ship tries to land and deal with cobalt. We try to detain them, they try to escape. Turrets prevent that rather forcibly.

Two survivors were found, they're being held right now. And we've just opened up trade relations with a nearby orbital station.

Did I miss anything? I'm not as thorough as Williams is.

I've been working on that and what I think I got was:
Do not understand. Some things are not clear. Vessel of unknown origins has no life (not sure about this one). Systems are breaking down (Unknown vessel's or Ulysses's?) Maybe some kind of EMP is causing the breakdown. This is not a recording (?). Our next landing will be a hard landing (?).

    do not understand?
    some things not clear?
    low on batery?
    vessel of unknown
    origins?
    does not scan for life?
    systems breakdown
    maybe some kind of EMP
    recording
    HARD LANDING

The UAC Ulysses was on some secret mission hundreds of years ago and went missing. This Montag guy was the navigation dude, but he was in cryosleep when something happened and was woken up recently by those pirates. But they're all dead now, their ship is pretty much destroyed, and Montag doesn't know what happened. He also won't say what the Ulysses' mission was, since it was classified.

how much oxygen do you suppose these small tents hold ? even with the small breather unit attacked to the outside, this hole ( Bradley gouges the pin into the side of the tent) will become a very big problem for you in oh i dont know... an hours time ?

    APB Announcement
Suspected dangerous Sunspot activity or localized sunflare.

Sector Bx4#74 seems to have become unstable and should be avoided at all costs.

What we have at first believed to be pirate activity is apparently some sort of anomaly.
As of today at 15:48 Old Earth Reckoning we have lost another transport ship, bringing a total to 3 this month in that sector. It is also believed that at least 5 other ships have suffered a similiar fate.

All these ships reported a garbled message indicating strong ECM dammage. Any drones sent to investigate have not returned.

Scientists were unable to comment on why or how does this anomaly appear to be moving.

"They are. Welcome back to the world of the living, Montag." The man on the other end pauses, coughs, and then speaks again. "Please verify your mission and authorization."

Artemis sinks low into his seat, looks around to make sure no one is snooping, and sighs. "Senior Navigation Officer Artemis Montag, UAC Ulysses. Operation: East of Eden. Authoization code: Epsilon, Delta, 95229. Confirm."

The man sits still, silent. Several tense moments pass before he says, "Confirmed." There's another deep sigh. "Hold for a moment while I transfer you."

The video feed disconnects for a moment before reconnecting. Another man is sitting on the screen, staring at Montag. "Hello Lieutenant Commander. We thought you'd all died aboard the Ulysses. I'll admit, I'd never heard of your ship or your mission. It was a bit before my time, but I've been reading up. Apparently your ship's signal cut off suddenly. I'm not sure where they picked me up from, so I sadly can't give information on the Ulysses' current location, and the majority of the ship that found me, as well as it's crew, are now dead. Though, there have been several distress calls we've picked up from the Ulysses. Garbled. I don't know if you've gotten them yet. If not, I'll see they're sent."

My god! This is... unsettling. I'm going to need to explain this in steps so bear with me.
    1. We picked up distress calls from the Ulysses.
    2. We couldn't determine their originatng location so we sent them to Fleet Command.
    3. Fleet Command tookits sweet time but I have just got thos co-ordinates in and they are on my desk.
    4. We picked up that object on the telescopes.
    5. We determined its location in the heart of the anomaly.

Now for the interesting part. The Ulysses location directly coincides with that anomaly but in all my years I have never seen a USN ship like that.

He pounds his fist against a desk. "It was one of a kind. Built to withstand whatever was out there. What the hell happened? It shouldn't be here." He takes several deep breaths.

"I was the navigator for her. I was supposed to stay in cryostasis until we reached a designated point, far away from Earth. Further than anyone had gone before. Until we reached that point, she was supposed to be manned by an alternating skeleton crew. I was never woken up, so something happened, I don't know what."

He stops again, his face is getting red. "Operation: East of Eden. That was our mission. I don't know the specifics. Only Captain Revens and the commanders on Earth did. But I knew some. It had been theorized that life on Earth developed from meteor impacts which had bacteria and other single celled organisms attached. Big deal, it's been one of the fringe theories for years."

"But supposedly, some kind of, I don't know what they're called. One of those, "Big Ear" kind of satellites, that we sent off into space. It picked up some kind of signal. I don't know much more than that. But the Ulysses was sent out to find the source of the signal.
