You have been been dispatched by Baron Arquellete to investigate the disappearance of his 3rd son, an adventurer of some minor repute. Though not immediately in line to take over the Baron's holdings, he was regarded fondly by the Baron and his subjects.

The last last anyone heard of him, the Baron's son traveled south with a band of friends, adventurers all, in pursuit of rumors of great wealth hidden by one of the wizard-kings of old. It has been two seasons since anyone heard of the Baron's son, and he has become most distraught over the disappearance. You have been charged with finding word of the scion's fate, and if possible, his safe return.

You are yourself an adventurer, and one of greater accomplishment than the Baron's child. You have slain a great red dragon, and had a hand in thwarting the incursion of the hordes of the abyssal realms. As a result, the Baron has promised you 10,000 sovereigns of gold for finding his son, and 10,000 more for his corpse or 20,000 more for his safe return. You've gathered some information, and believe you are hot on his trail, perhaps near his current location. The most recent lead is but a few months old, well after the Baron last saw his son.

You are well equipped for your task. You have a magic sword, 10-foot pole, plenty of arrows for your bow, 50 feet of rope, a hatchet to cut down wood or possibly break through wooden barriers, a pick for climbing, a shovel for digging, stout armor with which to protect yourself, and enough torches to see your way through a dungeon if need be.

I suggest we make for the nearest settlement, if there is one.

Otherwise, find a good clearing near the shore, and begin constructing a temporary camp. a Simple wooden or earth cabin should suffice. Construct a basic workbench and some chests too, since we may need more tools if we need to make an Excavation of this.

Your information has brought you here. You believe this to be young Arquellette's goal. Somewhere near here is the barrow of a long forgotten wizard-king. What little you know of this long-dead king is that he was a most terrible ruler who dabbled in obscene magics and terrible experiments.

As you draw near the marshy shore, you feel a sense of wrongness. The trees stand like dead soldiers against the sky. You hear no birdsong or insect calls, even though it is high summer. The air is still and oppressive.

You decide that finding high ground would be an excellent idea, and proceed to do just that.

What's this? A formation of stones on an unnaturally level surface? You begin to suspect that you are very near your goal indeed. You search around more carefully and in the sand dunes you find the openings to three caves, each of them hidden by collapsing mud and windblown sand.

You dig away at the sand and mud covering the entrance to the western cave.

The middle cave is most exceptional. The floor is lined with tiles, and the walls and ceiling are lined with fresh plaster. The walls are painted with frescoes depicting all manner of grisly and macabre scenes. In the dim light you can see what seems to be a chest sticking out of the wall.

FYI in case you haven't guessed it by now, this is The Tomb of Horrors. AD&D rules, and not Minecraft rules, are how this will be conducted, if you have the necessary intestinal fortitude for the task.

You are a very high level character, and it is safe to assume on your part that you have an excellent suite of dungeoneering skills and are more than capable of handling yourself in a fight. Your abilities will be kept purposefully nebulous so that I can fudge things. You can make it, and I'll give you every opportunity to do so, but death is a very real possibility.

Think of this as a very elaborate graphical aid similar to the one found inside the pages of S1.

While you're looking for traps, you happen to notice an essentially unconcealed catch at the base of the chest. A closer inspection reveals that there is a pivot along the top of the chest against the wall. Apparently the whole thing lifts up and out away from the wall with a hinge being pooly concealed along the top.

Along the way, your trusty pole finds five trap doors, each of which are 10 feet deep and lined with vicious looking spikes. You're confident that you've probably found all of them, and can make your way to the end of the great hall...

The blue stone was a normal grey color like the rest of the stones in the arch. It only started to glow blue when you drew close. It is a very solid part of the archway, and except for the fact that it glows, is structurally identical to the others. It would take several hours of work with your pick in order to chip away the mortar that holds it in place, not to mention the difficulty with which you'd have prying it out, as it looks load-bearing.

Using your prodigious dungeoneering abilities (and casting a quick detect magic to boot), you inspect your surroundings.

There is a low-level ambient magical field everywhere. You cannot determine what kind it is.

The great stone face radiates an overwhelmingly powerful aura of abjuration school magic, but does not seem to have any sort of mundane traps.

The arch, too, doesn't seem to have any sort of mundane mechanism to it, and radiates a low level illusion/phantasm aura, as well as a moderate transmutation aura.

I bet that the colored stones have to do with the teleportation arch? If that's the case, then by using binary combinations of them -- Red/Yellow/Blue, where 0 is off and 1 is on -- 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, and 111 reveal eight possible destinations. IF that's the case. And I'm betting that a lot of the destinations are traps, so it'd be best to try to find the right destination before jumping in.

Additional searches yield no evidence of traps or secret mechanisms or doors.

An attempt to discern the nature of the abjuration aura of the great stone face leads you to believe that it's some sort of modified nondetection spell capable of deflecting even the mightiest of divination attempts.

Spellcraft alone is not enough to determine how the archway functions. Pressing the orange and yellow stones causes them to glow brighter, just as what happened when you pressed the blue stone. Pressing the blue stone does not cause it to change. Other than the increased intensity of the glow, touching the stones causes no discernable change in yourself, your surroundings, or the archway.

As a last resort, you do happen to have in your possession a couple of scrolls with the spell "Legend Lore" scribed upon them.

You tap around with the pole, finding nothing. As you get to the corner, you realize the difficulty in maneuvering a 10 foot pole in a three foot wide corridor. Realizing that you'll have to stuff it in your bag of holding so you can make the turn, you accidentally bang it against the roof of the corner.

It makes the unmistakable sound of metal on wood.

It appears that the ceiling here is a trap door disguised as the regular stone of the tunnel. You push on it, and it easily flips up and open. Inside you can see the ceiling of another darkened chamber.

You climb up with your torch in hand.

There are three chests here, one covered in gold leaf, another plated in silver, and a third oak chest bound in solid bronze bands.

Participation seems to be slacking, and I'm getting tired. This is where we leave off tonight.

Shall I resume this at a later date?

    Awesome.

Though I didn't find the thread until it was already over...

None the less, this kind of stuff is why I keep coming back to /tg/.

    Good stuff, OP.
Looking forward to when you come back for part II!
