I'm a freelance (crappy) artist, semi-professional writer who's been reduced to writing homoerotic fiction for table scraps while trying to take care of my wife who received a brain injury right before giving birth and now has uncontrollable seizures, so she can't work so thus no longer qualifies for health care.

So yah, I'd relocate to the UK and write grimderp for 36k a year.

I'd fix Mat Ward's bullshit while I'm at it if the let me... It's not really all that hard actually, a single novel about the corruption and slow decline of one generation of Grey Knights could do it...

    >>14557141
Actually, you might be surprised. The stigma of "tie-in" fiction is largely gone from the industry itself (at least behind the scenes, where the money is made and the deals are done), and Black Library is taken pretty seriously - especially due to its sales and bestsellers in the last 18 months. Don't make the mistake of attributing the way the business was run 10, or even 4-5 years ago, as the way things work now. That's the biggest mistake detractors of BL tend to make. Different eras, and all that.

Have you ever thought about writing a Blood Ravens novel? Goodness knows they need a competent writer, and you'd definitely be the man for the job.

    >>14559578

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I'd rather not touch the Blood Ravens in their current state. They're pretty much distinctly THQ's, uh, "slice" of the IP, if you get me? While there's always that "everything is canon and nothing is canon" axiom (...trope? ...cliche?), they're a distinct corner of the IP that feels increasingly silly and ugly to me. I'm not deriding them, mind you. I get their appeal, it's just not up my alley, after all that's come before.

I post on the B&C more than, say WarSeer (or whatever) because there's a significantly killer signal-to-noise ratio, and way less anger. It's also a conversion idea-stealing goldmine, because I'm a fucking chimp when it comes to making my own conversions. I put a Space Marine bionic on a Chaos Marine and secretly herald myself a genius. So any real inspiration is always rad.

Since you're supposedly doing a Grey Knights book, are you going to go more in-depth about characters like Draigo e.g. shed some light on why he's got Mephiston-esque physical prowess instead of that which is usually the case with Grand Masters/Chapter Masters?

Of course if it's not set in late 41st, that issue would not come up (although Draigo does time travel in the Warp).

I'm not touching any of the special characters. It's set in 438.M41, so a good few centuries before Mat Ward's 'dex. I didn't really find those characters all that appealing to write about, and in fairness, I doubt Games Dev ever expected (or cared) since they never asked. But I had ideas for my own squad, anyway.

I went back to my troll rogue, because I'm too lazy and short on time to learn a new class, really. I also volunteered to be an ore mule for Katie, because she wanted double crafting professions back in, like... Burning Crusade or something. But I barely play WoW now, because free time eludes me. It was great for condensing several hobbies into one (gaming, roleplaying, free-time writing, etc.), but it was poison to get anything else done. Also, my guild is worthless at PvP, which was my primary interest apart from roleplaying.

I think the rules are great. I'm not a huge fan of some of the changes, I admit, but it's the nature of the game. At a push, I'd say I'm trying to play closer to the "purity through devotion" angle from before, rather than the "pure, no matter what corrupt stuff we do" angle of the new incarnation.

Perfection should be effort to maintain - at least in the narrative sense - or it's a worthless struggle. Hell, if it's not even a struggle at all, it's debatable that it's even something worth exploring in a narrative context. Not much of a story, when your main characters are so absolutely unthreatenable.

Without commenting too much (as I said, I reckon the rules are pretty great) my editor did ask:

"Possible place for a Dreadknight, in the climactic battle?"

My exact response was: "That really won't be happening, Nick."

There's much more of an expanded cast in Blood Reaver, and even First Claw get more attention and development (like Uzas and Variel, especially). The Atramentar actually don't show up much, largely because the Exalted relies more on his newfound Raptor Cult, the Bleeding Eyes, which is an intentional slight to the Terminators. Talos also finds a significant reason to start distrusting Malek, despite the fact they were chums in Soul Hunter.

There's definitely more Heresy-era stuff in there. Two flashbacks to fighting in the Imperial Palace, and one of Curze's personal chamber, when several of his chosen watch him slowly losing his mind.

That's the plan, though I want that to reach its apex in the third novel. I tend to see (read: hope) the them of Soul Hunter was one of exhaustion and degeneration, and having to remain brothers with kin that you absolutely loathed. Blood Reaver is more focused on the fact that no Chaos Astartes really operates for the same reasons as his brothers. Like, a lot of them can't stand Talos hearkening back to their age of glory and sinister honour, because for them that was always just a lie the deluded members of the Legion invented to cope with their corruption. Xarl, especially, considers Talos bizarrely deep in self-deception. Like most Night Lords, (...and in the Index Astartes article) Xarl was always a mass-murdering fuckhead glorying in his own power.

And for the record, you guys know the "MEANWHILE AT GW" pic that gets posted a lot, with the guy laying on the floor, covered in paintbrushes and stuff? That's Black Library's new(ish) marketing head honcho, Andy Smillie. One of the nicest guys on Earth, for really reals. Whoever gets the job mentioned in this thread would end up as his assistant.

Sorry, I missed that one before. I'm arguing with my brother on MSN at the same time as this.

I don't mean for this to come across as a cop-out answer, but I know it will sound like one. Where the Alpha Legion is concerned, I'm fairly certain there's no answer, there never will be one, and I kinda like that. They're purposefully designed to be what they are: a weird enigma that answers "Yes" to every question they get asked about allegiance. They embody that "It's all true and none of it's true" ethos behind some of 40K's juiciest bits.

So to that end, I really don't try to frame it in terms of what they really are - and I hope no codex ever tries. I prefer to think of them as filling a story niche, acting towards objectives that I personally will never really know. But because I like to write pointless fluff for my armies, my inability to really get inside their heads (despite digging them a lot) means I'm not keen to make a TT army out of them.

That said, I was saying to Dan the last time we hooked up for a breakfast meeting that I sincerely doubt the Alphas believed the Cabal for a minute. If anything, Alpharius was just using that as one of many excuses to do whatever else he wanted to do. It's a fun angle, though. I almost hope it's true.

tl'dr -- I don't know, and I actually like not knowing. I think they're one of the mysteries in 40K that actually come across as intelligently crafted, rather than saying "Here is a mystery" and leaving it at that.

I honestly don't know how many, but it's freaking loads. Sorry for being so vague; I can only go on what they've mentioned in the past. Don't worry about what they're looking for, either. A lot of people think bolter porn is the key to getting published (and not to put too fine a point on it, but at one point, that was perhaps truer than it is now), so run with whatever you feel comfortable with. If you get 40K's theme*, that'll be what counts more than anything else.

They're looking for decent writing (in after HAHAHAHAHA) rather than anything specific. Unless they're distinctly asking for something, in which case, just bring something new to whatever old trope they're asking for.

I think it's only fair to highlight the fractures within the Legion as fractures within their Primarch.

Spurrier's book (which is still my favorite BL book, period, sorry ADB) still highlights Sahaal as a preening, arrogant asshole. Sure, he was insanely competent but he also thought extremely highly of himself which was mirrored in his behavior.

In a Legion full of similar fractious assholes, I think it's only fair that such behavior is not universally respected.

I kind of view the Night Lords (and I do play them on the TT) as a group of isolationists who, being recruited from criminal backgrounds, don't particularly trust each other, although there is some semblance of brotherhood. They just trust everyone else LESS.

Good question. I think the key is that I don't reeeeeally talk smack. Like, the Sahaal stuff I see reposted here weekly is only one of about 15 fucking essay-length forum posts I've done on the subject - and it's the least-interesting, as well as the most negative - and people take "I wasn't a fan of that character, but fucking love Si Spurrier's writing" as "LOL ADB goes crazy over this shit LOL". Like it's a personal grudge, if you get me? And it's not. I mean, that'd be terminally lame.

The thing is - and again, this'll sound like some lame defence - but this ties into something I am ball-achingly passionate about in regards to the IP. I talk to IP guys a lot (especially when prepping that monthly column thingy I did about canon in 40K), since it's something I'm really keen to "get right" insofar as it's possible to do.

The short, short, short version is that the galaxy is broken up into a bajillion sections. Battlefleet Gothic's Sponge-class Uberlords are just like that in that one battlefleet. The others, across a squillion other little sectors, will all come with their own minor modifications, if they even use those classes of ships at all. So it was between a rock and a hard place, but you're right, I should've just stuck with the "core" stuff already presented, because it's one of those cases where deviation just comes across as lazy and shitty research.

The Dark heresy RPG sourcebooks are the perfect example (in fact, the very example the IP guys used when explaining this to me) of how segmented the galaxy really is. Stuff in those doesn't apply to the whole Imperium, but because real detailed lore is so hard to come by with 40K, it's often latched onto with serious ferocity.

I played Eldar in BFG, by the way. I wasn't victorious.

    Ever.

Yeah, but my issue (as always) is deadlines. I take about 7-10 months to write a novel. That's over twice as much as some people, whether they're published by Black Library or not. Novelists tend to write fast, which is why most of them have a book a year. Me, not so much. I second guess my work a lot, rewrite it while telling my editors it's just not finished, and keep it unsubmitted while I send it to my reading circle.

Yeah, the thing about the Avenger, Vengeance, Retaliator, Executor and Exorcist grand cruisers is that they are basically the same ship, with different weapon configurations, Avenger being broadside weapon batteries only. The lack of prow weaponry is something all of them share, and this carries to FFG's representation too, thats really why it popped up.

For example, if it had been a Repulsive (they are after all used as reserve ships by the Imperium still), a forward lance would have been a non-issue because that hull does get prow weaponry. Or you could make up a variant of the Avenger/Vengeance hull with prow weapons and rename it, but that would probably cause someone to cry about you making up ships on the spot. But really, it's not a big deal and I can understand what you tried to do.

By the way, losing with Eldar? Tsk tsk. Take a Void Stalker and use all remaining points for Nightshades. That makes all but Necron players cry nerf and MoveMoveShoot houserules.
