It was an answer I would have expected from one of our trained infiltrators, knowing the metaphor used." He glances down at his hands, clasped against one another. "He said that Marn was afraid that the others would deface it, and mock it most of all. So he did not share his true self with others until he was sure there was no other option, and let them think what they wanted to until then." He looks over to you. "An attitude I hadn't expected from a child, especially one I thought of as needing more attention because of his injuries.
"He has tried to go outside of our clan many times." The Zal says. "I always worried about him, not that he couldn't take care of himself, but simply that the common folk would only see what he didn't have, instead of what he did." He looks over to you, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "He never said a thing, but I could always tell they had belittled him, and that none had given him more than the slightest chance. Even here, I doubt he would have gotten enough training without my intervention to become Er'laki."
He looks you in the eye. "However, I saw that his mood has perked up quite a bit in these last hours, in spite of the battle. I'm afraid that though I took him in, I've never understood what he's gone through. When I heard of the limbs the Crystal Cavern had, I was ready to send him there myself, but his brothers told me that it seemed like he didn't want to go."
He sighs, leaning back on the stone bench he occupies. "I thought for a year or so that he was foolish, but-" He stops himself, looking away to some corner of the room. "I just want him to live well. And I confess, seeing that you had lost a limb as well, that you might talk to him in a way that I can't." |
