300 KB The Field of Blades quest Anonymous 01/23/12(Mon)04:12 No.17641919
For decades you have sat, in the field of your fallen comrades, each one of you discarded by the battle, each one rusted by the lashing rain and bitter winds. But not you, you were different. While the others succumb to the ages, you were forced to watch the last of your brothers in arms fade away, leaving only skeletons of their former selves.

The discarded weapons surround you, marking the fallen, and surrounding you in a superficial tomb of sorts. Jutting up in the near center of the graveyard, you stand tall, nearly triumphant in your wait.

    >What kind of weapon are you?

You were simply a mans preferred weapon. Forged by his own hands, you are the masterwork of his agonizing nights. He poured his blood, sweat and tears in to creating you. Thus, in the mysterious ways of the forge you began to form your own conciseness, however it was barely noticeable during your masters life.

Your claim to fame came about when your master rose in the ranks of his lord. The citizens began to tell tales of his peerless blade, gathering sunlight and blinding his foes, felling mountains with a single slash. Sadly the majority of these were lies. However the rumors were enough, and soon your master became the target of greedy eyes.

Your masters final moments were during a decisive battle, guarding his king from assailants, however he did not guard his own back, and was struck down.

You did not fully awake until after the battle.

Though many of the tales regarding you were exaggerated, you could in fact cut through various magics thrown at you. Your blade was peerless, so sharp in fact your master had to replace your scabbard every so often, for you would utterly mutilate them over time.

So you have waited here, all these years. At first, you were overjoyed with your awakening. You called out to your brothers and sisters around you, but were only greeted with silence. Thus you waited, with only the stray bird and the sky as your companion.

But today is different, you can see movement in the field, shifting through the weapons.

Grasping you gingerly in both hands, she holds you out towards the enemies with shaking arms. Shes barely able to stand, let alone fight. The men circle around you, blocking off any chance for escape.

Giving off a wolfish grin, the man to the front mockingly calls out to the woman "Adel, you shouldn't have ran. You KNOW our way. Those who disobey must pay the price, and you RAN from your price Adel. Killed him and ran." Drawing his blade, he steps forward again, as do the other men. "Pity, this way is more fun."

    He charges at you.

    >"DODGE LEFT!"

She stumbles left, taking a glancing blow from the man, being spinning around banging into the mans armored head. You slide through the armor like a hot knife through butter, tearing off a better part of the mans face.

His death screams seem to dishearten his companions slightly, but that soon turns to laughter as they laugh at him for "Getting killed by a wench."

Her breathing is ragged as she readies herself again, this time taking the attack better, slicing through the attackers blade and taking his leg out from under him. However she is not quick enough to dodge the one that came from the side, gashing her down the side.

Her lifeblood stains his blade as she clutches her side.

Clutching at her side, she can only hold you with one hand. The man raises his arm to deal another blow.

    >"Slash his torso!"

Her arm shoots out instinctively, severing the mans chest from his legs. His upper part crashes to the ground gasping for breath. The remaining two men seem understandably reluctant to engage you, but after some cursing, they both edge closer to your deadly reach.

The one to the left is the first to lose patients as charge, but she swiftly kicks him in the groin, and brings you in a flashing arc down onto his head. The second drops his weapon and starts backing away.

Yeah, but we're a blade. We're not human, so we should have a name fitting for a blade and not a human.
I mean, you wouldn't name your magical vorpal blade "Jack" or "Hans" would you?

Still, "Air-Splitter" sounds cheesy, I'll just assume that "we" are somewhat proud of being a magical blade have a better taste that that.
And Air-Splitter, really?.. Thats how you can call your woodaxe or your fruitknife, we are certainly more refined than that.

I would settle for "Air" or something that has to do with our ablitly to cut through magic like... Ah shit.I'm going in circles. Lets just go with "Rend" it sounds similiar to what our creator named us and its pretty much what we do in regards of magic. Even if our name sounds like we're some axe, or claymore or some other ungraceful and brute weapon.

And while we're really happy to be wielded again, we should tell the girl how to handle us in a more proper way. I mean.. Look at the last fight! Thats not how you use a scimitar. There is guts and blood and limbs everywhere and.. Do you even know how bad entrails smell once they're out your body? The smell of decay is a freaking joke in comparison to that. And like I said, we're not some axe, we're not here for the hacky and slashy stuff, we cut smooth and cleanly and thats how we want to be used. If you want blood and gore everywhere just use a goddamn axe!

Can we sigh as a blade? We should do that quite often. Whenever she does something stupid. Just to dick around with her. Oh, oh! That's what our name could be for future generations: The Sighing blade.

But first tell her to clean us, we like to shine.

    >"Call me Rend. I can't quite split air, but my blade is very sharp."

Adel looks at awe at you for a moment, before grimacing in pain and clutching her side. You watch her sloppily dress her wounds with scraps of cloth from the dead men and her own clothing.

    >"Check the men for alcohol, and use that to pour over the wound."

She obeys, and finds a skin of something. Going by the look on her face after she sniffed it, it was quick powerful. She lets loose a soft whimper as the stuff his the wound, the bandages it to the best over her ability.

She seems not as haggard now, but seems very tired. She picks you up once more "I have nothing to carry you in..."

Pausing she looks to you "I didn't think it would kill him though.

That seemed to comfort her a little. "We can probably reach the closest town before sundown if we leave now." She say, going to rise.

    >"Ah, before that, you should probably clean me. I mean it can't look good for a girl walking into a town with an unsheathed sword covered in blood."

"Oh...." She tears off another strip of cloth attempting to clean you, not well though.

If not then look for merchant caravans or merchants in generel, they always need protection. But we don't tell her anything of that.

Just ask her to tell you more about the town and let her come up with an idea herself. Before we aid her, we should sit and watch and find out if she really is a clueless as she seems to be, because of thats true, she is probably the wrong person to wield us.

Too much sympathy for her will only get her to rely too much on us, what will eventually lead to a bad end for her.

"THE BODIES!" She shouts excitedly "I had forgotten about them in the confusion, they should have money on them, right?"

    >That also works. "There might be valuables on them."

She seems rather pleased with herself, and the training seems to have made her confident. The field is a few hours away from the town, and you make short time getting there.

"Wow~" she gasps "These are silver coins, and EIGHT of them. This could have fed my family for a week on the good bread."

Another search of the bodies reveals nothing else valuable, however one of the men's deer skin coat wasn't stained in blood like the others, so she takes that as well.

Well gentlemen, we are an intelligent item being wielded by a - let's be honest here - complete pansy. She's got some potential, but for the time being we're basically directing her life.

What are our goals? Our motivation? Without knowing that, this quest is going to get argumentative very quickly. And without something to work towards, it's going to get bland.

Might I suggest we become a thing of vengeance? Let's help our newest wielder take revenge on he who destroyed her life by his own lust and greed.

We'll get her enough money and training to get armored up and competent at wielding us, then go back and try to kill the arrogant ass.

    Consensus? Criticisms?

Finishing her meal and ignoring the hooting of the drunken bar folk, she asks the bar tender if there is a healer in town, and he directs her to the place "But I hope you have enough coin sweetheart, healers don't come cheap these days." He grins at her.

After having the healer treat her wounds, which was pretty much what she had did before, except some stitching and proper bandaging, she leaves the building minus a silver. "A WHOLE silver?! she complains "Thats outargues! Its a scam! IT-it..."

    >"Was necessary."

"Right..." Her shoulders slump at the loss of her money, and she returns to the tavern. The hoots from the men are back, but soon fade as they return to their drink.

"Back again, I see." The barkeep greets her. "Yes, I was wondering where to look to make money in this town." Pondering or a moment, he replies "Well, Maurice is always looking for more girls to whore. I'm also looking for a barmaid. There is a merchant caravan leaving in two days, and there is lumber work available. But I don't imagine a pretty little thing like you is interested in those last two." She fingers your pommel "Actually, I wanted something that pays the most, that does not involve whoring myself or being the object for drunken fools to lust after. Can you tell me where to go for the caravan?"

He throws back his head in a roar of laughter "A DELICATE LOOKING THING LIKE YOU?! HAHA!" The Laughter continues for a minute before dying away. "Oh, you are serious. Erhm....You will have to talk to old Bob down at the town hall for that. He handles all comings and goings through here."

Adel spends the next day and a half resting and sleeping in the room she rented from the inn. She was desperately thankful to have a bed to sleep in again, though she was shocked at the silver coin she had to pay for it. Down to six silver now. Her wound is largely better now, though it still itches and is rather sore according to her.

She meets the caravan leader, a short man with a big nose who wheezes a lot. He doesn't talk much, and after a grunt of approval, he waves over another guard and instructs him to give you the armor and other equipment. Looking at her, he curses "You mean to tell me we have to go all the way to Forlorn falls caring for a girl who thinks herself to be a warrior?" He drops the armor in front of her and spits "You better watch yourself girl, there are other things that can pierce through a woman." Then he storms off.

Shaking, she begins to haul the leather armor on, then pulls her deerskin coat over that. The helmet is not for her size, to the point where it impeded her vision from flopping back and forth, so she chose not to wear that.

    >"I think you should keep me close, and sleep with one eye open every night we are with these people."

    "Agreed." She whispers.

We should silently give her lectures as we walk - during the hours when she can't practice. We can teach her about tactics, surely. Do we have any particular knowledge other than tactics and combat? Stories, songs, languages, geography, folklore? It sounds like she wants to be a bard, be a person who goes adventuring not for gold but for stories. It would do us well to help her to that end. If we don't know any of that, eavesdrop constantly, trying to pick up songs and stories from other people in the caravan, passersby, and people in the destinations which we reach.

The long days of travel turned to nights as you walked the dusty trail. During the days, you filled them with lectures of martial tactics, warfare and all that you knew of it, The nights are filled with practice and rest. Some nights you hear the other guards muttering about her, others they sing and they dance. One of the guards even started sparring with her, another started teaching her how to live off the land, and identify edible plants. Others kept their distance, thinking a woman would bring bad luck on the journey, a few watched the young woman with another kind of intent. The journey continued.

    >"Adel, what tales do they tell of our birth?"

Clearing her throat, she recites the tale. "You were forged in an age long past, the materials gifted to the master blacksmith Andrei the Wild by the forge God Anvil. He labored in his forge for 30 days and 30 nights, shaping the very wind into a steel blade, that cracked like thunder when swung and shone like the sun. With the blade he severed mountains, shattered the wind and ripped open the heavens themselves. But he was betrayed by one close to him who coveted the blades power, and died holding off the advancing Green tide with a handful of others. To this day it is forbidden to enter the Fields of the Fallen, for if you do, you shall anger the ghosts of heroes past."

With that, you continue her lessons, keeping your eye opened for any trouble. The town "Forlorn Falls" is not far now you hear the other guards talk, but their voices are hushed. Yes, there is definitely something moving about in there, a curse from one of the guards confirms this, others start muttering prayers to whatever God they worship. Adel is keeping composed far better than the others, but her iron grip on your hilt betrays her feelings.

"Easy does it lads. The folk of the forest mind themselves, as long as we behave ourselves in their lands." The caravan leader calls out eyeing Adel "Keep your women and your weapons close though, they are known to take both."

The small remainder of the journey is incredibly tense, words stopped passing back and forth between the guards and the caravan quickened, the guards nearly running the last legs of the trip. You had counted at least a hundred creatures in the woods, you lost count when you neared the town, its large stone walls and watchtowers welcoming you in.

Oh you are on the battlefield with Andrei once more, spinning and dancing around all who oppose you. Andrei was a very passionate man in both the forge and in life, the battlefield was no different. With great zeal he wielded you for his king. But Andrei died.

"My father used to play this to me as a child, its one of my favorites." Adel says while tapping her foot to the beat. Now this is interesting.

    >"Can you sing it?"

"Eh?" She almost spills her drink, her face growing red. "W-why y-yes I can. My father taught me it when I was little. B-but I haven't touched a fiddle in ages." She stammers out.

    >"We should get you a fiddle sometime then, it will lighten the times we are traveling."

With that her checks are scarlet red as she buries her face in her drink. You think you hear her mutter "You need to get a fiddle first..."

    >"Back to business, are you going to continue on to the Citadel?"

"I was. That was so much money, its not so bad if it is always like this." She says hopefully

    >"Hmmm, it's probably a good idea to ask the Tavern keeper about the Citadel and the road ahead. Prior planning prevents... well let's not dwell on that. What's your assessment on the other guards? If the worst happens they may be a great help, though I wouldn't be suprised if some of them turned and fled."

On your advice, she asks the barkeep about Citadel. Back in your day, Citadel was a central fortress, one of the largest in the kingdom, though who knows what the ages have brought. The barkeep is astonished that she doesn't know about it, the "Grand capitol" of the kingdom. He goes on describing how it is an impenetrable fortress city that not even the demonic Green Tide could bring down.

It seems Citadel has gotten rather large since the last time you were there. You and Andrei had fought at that battle, though it was one of the first you two had ever fought, it lingers in your memory as a precious moment.

The Barkeep continues on, talking about the way there. It seems that this path goes deeper into the forest, further into the creatures domain. It is considerably longer than the way getting here, however it goes straight through the forest. It seems those creatures are the natives of the forest, and the construction of Forlorn Falls angered them greatly, and that the town got its name because thats the way they kill you. The take you up to the top of the highest tree and drop you. But they keep to themselves, and only those that tread off the road get taken. They also seem to have a thing for pregnant women it seems, they will take them right off the road. If a woman steps off the road, she is not killed the same as others, she is never heard from again all the same though. Adel shudders at the implication.

She thanks the man and returns to her drink. "I think I might need a couple more of these before we leave tomorrow."

    >"The road ahead is long, and the danger is greatest when people think they are beyond harm. You should get an early night if you want to survive the day ahead... but for now. But be careful, after all there are several drunk guards here who are just happy that they lived another day, they probably feel like they can DO anything."

She nods as she turns back to the music, foot tapping still with the beat. Its not long before she retires for the night, exhausted from the days events.

    {Time to describe what Adel looks like, I haven't even mentioned what race she is yet }

Closing and locking the door behind her, Adel begins to disrobe for bed. She was lucky enough to get a private room, away from the other guardsmen, so it was just the two of you in the room. though the merriment from downstairs is still quite noticeable

Taking off her leather armor, but gingerly maneuvering around her injured side, you get the first actual look at your partner. Human, with tanned skin from hours laboring outside with slender curves sporting a modest pair of breasts, though one is covered by the bandages. Crowned with black unkempt shoulder length hair accent her deep green eyes. She wasn't a bad looking woman from what you can tell, and whats more is that her body is somewhat hardened with muscle.

Pursing her lips, she takes off the bandages to redress the wound. Poor girl will probably have a nasty looking scar there. You wish her off to sleep, and are promptly greeted with soft snores.

Until the first rays of light started creeping in, you watched over the girl. At one point during the night you had thought someone was trying to get into the room, but it seemed to just be some lost drunk man.

Adel quickly awakes, dresses and is down eating by the time the other guardsmen make their way down.

After eating a brief, quite breakfast, the caravan lead wants to get on the go as soon as possible. You soon find yourself right back where you were on the caravan, as you leave the town.

    >"They are watching us already."

Adel traces her eyes across the forest. "There are more of them than last time..." She whispers, her hand curling back into the iron grip around your hilt. Some of the guards being their cursing and praying once more, you think you hear one crying.

Hundreds of sets of glowing yellow eyes peer down at the caravan, some at ground level and others up in the trees, just watching. "Why don't they make any noise?" Whispers Adel.

    >"Perhaps they can't. Or maybe they don't see us worthy of communication."

You notice a low overhanging branch almost too late.

    >"ADEL, ABOVE!"

Adel screams as a clawed hand makes a swipe at her head. She dives to the side, burying herself in the mud. You see the retracting hand of the culprit gets drawn back into the shadows, two yellow orbs glaring back down at you. Not at the girl, at YOU.

Adel rises to the slackening of bow strings and exhales of relief.

    "R-right.."

You continue on, with Adel keeping an extra wary eye for anymore overhanging branches. Night settles in and you camp there on the road. The treeline is lite up with yellow lights, watching, waiting for someone to step into their domain.

Adel and the guards sit around the campfire in silence. One of them suddenly stands up and starts screaming "FUCK YOU AND YOUR FUCKING FOREST! I GO WHERE I WANT YOU CAN'T KEEP ME HERE YOU FUCKS!" Then he runs off into the night, following the way the road was heading. A stream of yellow soon follows as other men shout after their companion. The day continues on without much talk. But something is bothering you, something Adel had told you back when you first met.

    >"Adel, the Noble, he never actually had his way with you before you killed him, did he?"

"What? NO, no no NO! I killed the greasy bugger before he could even touch me."

    >"Well thats good to know, you are a virgin then, yes?"

Her face reddens "W-H-what...What does that have to do with anything?!"

    >"Answer the question, you remember what the barkeep said about the pregnant women. Are you. A virgin?"

The tone you took was hard, forcing it from her lips "....Yes....My maidenhead remains unclaimed."

She seems hurt, no matter. This is important regarding her safety. Thankfully you wont have any creatures straying onto the road to snatch her away. Small comforts at least.

A few more days pass, and you lose two more guardsmen to misshapes. The first one went to go make water in the night, and stumbled into the woods. The second stumbled on a rock in broad daylight and fell into the open maw, leave the caravan with 7 more guards counting Adel.

She has been holding up far better than the other guards, her and the Caravan leader are impassable as stone, while the guardsmen are slavering at the mouths in fear. Many of them just weep, others don't do anything at all, they just keep their eyes straight ahead, looking at nothing, responding to nothing. Even when around the fire, they don't do anything, just stare.

    >"Some of the men decided to burn the forest rather than go through, the remainder tried to stop them....They were pulled into the forest, but not before THIS."

The screams of the dying creatures sounds throughout the forest with a stray cry for help from any men left alive.

Staying as low to the ground as she can, she navigates towards one of the closer cries, only to find a man trapped under a fallen tree, his torso crushed and blood pouring out of his mouth as he gasps for air. Snatching up a flaming branch in her hand, she hobbles over to the wounded man. Both his legs are broken, she is going to have to carry him or drag him. He is crying in agony.

Wasting no time, she sheathes you and slings him over her shoulders, keeping one hand on him to support him, holding the makeshift torch in the other hand. She begins making her way back to the road.

She sprints towards the road, and yellow eyes follow her. You watch as dark wraiths begin to crowd around your rear, seeming like they were mounting for an assault. Then you clear the woods.

Panting, Adel looks and see that one of the wagons still has a horse, but it is quite spooked from the fire. Tossing the man into the back, she climbs into the drivers seat and urges the horse on, which it happily obliges.

After nearly an hour of galloping, the horse is frothing at the mouth, and the trees are thinning out. A few more paces, and you break the forest. Only then does the horse slow to a stop.

Adel is gasping and shaking considerably and the man in the back seems to be in quite a bit of pain, but he is alive.

Adel is incredibly pale, still gripping he reins of the horse.

    >"Adel."

    No response

    >"ADEL!"

She falls out of the drivers seat onto the ground, and starts wreching whatever she had eaten that day. She didn't stop until her stomach was empty, and even then she did it twice more to make sure. Then she crawled over to the wheel of the wagon and propped her back up against it, and laughed. It wasn't a crazed laugh of someone gone mad, it wasn't a laugh filled with despair when one realizes its end. No, it was a joyful and genuine laugh.

"Ha..hahahahehehehaha...." Tears are brewing in her eyes as she stares up at the sky, smiling. "I was so scared..... I thought I was going to die."

    >"You did magnificently. You were a hero today. You saved a man's life when it would have been easier to leave him to his fate. I'm proud that you were the one to wield me."

She shakes her head "No, I'm not a hero. A hero would have tried to get that man from under the tree. A hero would have stayed behind to search every inch of the inferno for any more survivors. A hero....." She pauses brushing away a tear that fell "A hero would have prevented the whole thing from happening.....I just did what I could...."

"Just try to be a good person, and let history make you into a hero.
"Now, back to practicalities. We need to see if any other members of the caravan escaped, and what supplies are in this wagon. And if the person you saved, can actually be saved."

"That's a hero, Adel. The person who does the hard, right thing and then lives to talk about it. You would have died if you had bitten off more than you could chew - as it stands you were able to save both your life and the life of another who you weren't obligated to help. Had you gone back for the others, he would have died there in the wagon with nobody to shepherd him to safety. Heroism is a third courage, a third skill, and a third pragmatism. Now, see to him, lest he die back there in spite of your aid."

You may not have been able to stop the fire. But you rescued someone others would have deemed dead. You charged into the forest knowing the dangers ready to suffer the consequences.

It is always good to check one's self, but never doubt thy self.

She smiles, and climbs to her feet, walking to the back. "How are you doing, Clem?" The man was grimacing, but there wasn't much blood thankfully. His left leg has one of the bone cut right through the skin, and his other leg is twisted out at an unnatural angle. Other than a few other bruises, he seems fine. He grasps her hands "Thank you, thank you so much you wonderful woman." Blushing, she went to work making some leg splints and resetting his legs.

After much pain and screaming later, He is seated comfortably in the back of the wagon, with a blanket over him. Ironically, this is the very same guard who treated her rudely when she first joined the caravan.

"I wonder what kind of goods we saved." She says climbing into the wagon herself to look at the trade goods. "Hmmm, some pepper, hides and grain." She flicks at the hides and sniffs them "These are good quality, should fetch a nice price, I'm not sure about the grain and pepper though."
    >> Field !/MRkaMGfyI 01/24/12(Tue)02:17 No.17653359
She looks at the aghast Clem, in awe at her immediate appraisal of the goods "I didn't see anyone else leave that place, so its as good as ours." She defends herself. Clem just laughs. "Hah, I was just wondering where a girl learned to grade hides like that." Shes about to say something else in her defense then stops "My father took me out hunting sometimes, and showed me how to skin and tan the leather." Clem nods in approval.

"But enough wasting time, do you know where the closest town is?" She queries. "There should be a village in between here and Citadel." He replies.

"Right. Time to continue on." Adel gets the horse into a trot, and they are well on their way.

Just going to put it out there, but I think we have some silver between the two of them. Clem needs serious medical attention from a real healer at the village, then seriouser medical attention from a realer healer once we reach the city. I can't imagine that Adel did more than the most basic of splints, considering the resources and presumed medical knowledge she had at her disposal. Let's make sure that Adel understands this.
