5 KB Convergence: an Evolution spinoff Deus vs Machina 03/30/12(Fri)09:06 No.18511974
This will be a new series of Evolution games by a relatively new DM/not-exactly-drawfag. Let us begin. If you're an oldfag of these threads and/or want to ignore the TL;DR, READ ONLY THE POSTS WITH IMAGES.
    >> Deus vs Machina 03/30/12(Fri)09:06 No.18511977

Welcome to Convergence. This is a Evolution Game styled quest inspired by the originals started by from Aether.

The original Evolution Game had fantasy elements, with gods granting power to less evolved beings. Other Evolution Games by different authors tended to make the setting more grounded in reality, but this thread heads in the opposite direction, with a greater focus on the higher beings in the background and their machinations. The logical conclusion to a setting with randomly placed mysterious gods.

And in case you were wondering, the logo says "Convergence." Yes, I did invent my own cipher alphabet for this. No, that is not the only preparation of its kind I have prepared. Please, prepare to be amazed. I only hope my preparation was adequate and I do not disappoint your high expectations.

    Now, let us proceed.

The setting is a postapocalyptic world after the end, tainted and polluted by the dying throes of a previous civilization. The land is blighted by chemicals and radiation, cracked by weapons and erosion. The little terrain which is not all flat and dreary wastes consists of mountainous chasms, or chemical dumping grounds turned swamps, or massive lakes of nothing but filthy mud, or rapidly flowing rivers with no destination in mind. Ruins and the wreckage of technology sparsely dot the land. The sky is dimmed by smoke, ash and the many chemicals that were long ago spewed into the atmosphere.

What little plant life exists is twisted and withered. A large number of them are carnivorous due to the poor soil. Lichen and fungus are thriving. There are even some fleshlike growths that have spread across the ground, a sort of fungal symbiosis with some other microoganism. The rivers and lakes are full of poisonous water plants and floating microorganisms.

The third race, the Foram, are plankton-like creatures living within the polluted waters of the world. They have a soft body contained inside a crystalline, polyhedral shell, and absorb chemicals and nutrients through tiny, invisible pores in said shells.

PLEASE DO NOT INTRODUCE YOUR OWN RACES.
Additional subraces may split off of these but it must be an organic process, not someone suddenly deciding to add a bunch of lizards called Berkin or a flock of birds called Grawks.

Also, roll 1d20 to accompany non-evolution actions.

    >>18512009
All three races start out at around the size of the fingernail on your thumb. You may evolve them in small, single steps as anyone who's participated in one of these Evolution threads before will know.

You are not permitted to make up previous evolutionary steps that were "missed" due to being away, so don't use that as an excuse for suddenly evolving a creature into a superpredator out of nowhere please. Physical alterations are great but anything too fantastical, by which I mean "not highly feasible in real life" should be left to Events to achieve. Also, if you want to evolve something, don't keep doing the same thing in small, unnoticeable steps i.e. slowly making arms longer and longer. If you're going to do that just condense it all into one step.

Occasionally, as the DM, I will declare events which have an effect on the world in some way. It may be simply something which changes the environment forcing races to adapt. It may also be something more fantastical which grants the races abilities they can't develop on their own.
    >> Deus vs Machina 03/30/12(Fri)09:11 No.18512020
    >>18512016
Evolutions are perfectly fine to deal with on your own, though I will intervene if I am present and see something too extreme for my liking. (No YuMell CannibalShoggoths here, please.) Any actual action that involves a group of individuals from one or more races, however, must be accompanied by a 1d20 dice roll to judge success. If one of the races is defending against said action, they are also permitted to make a counter-roll. Attacks/thieving raids/other operations against another race, attempts to find a new area, appeals to higher powers, and adoption of behaviors that will affect other races all need dicerolls to aid them.

I would appreciate it if you can judge for yourselves what actions need dicerolls, but I will attempt to personally make up dicerolls that people have missed if I deem it necessary. I don't have time to catch everything however so I'd appreciate it if you at least try to judge such things for yourselves.

As a final word, remember that no race belongs to anybody in particular and everyone should feel free to modify any creature currently in existence, so long as it doesn't take OoC hate of a specific race into it in an overt manner, or godmode too much.

Also feel free to split the races into subraces, but not every time they evolve. And if you do, try to keep the naming methods in simple Adjective-Creature forms if possible. Not that I'm requiring it, but some other threads have gotten rather confusing IMO with all the random made-up names flying around. It's probably better to use descriptive, familiar words to refer to our creatures.

    Now, by all means.

    BEGIN/CONTINUE EVOLUTION!

Assuming you are not purposefully trolling, I find it becomes rather confusing if people just introduce random new races whenever they feel like it. Doing so also tends to make them overprotective of "their" race and thus encourages That Guy behavior.

It is assumed that ambient species are plentiful in the forms of small microorganisms and later on small prey animals. There is also plenty of plant and fungal life present as stated in the setting.

The creatures do indeed look "terrible." They are simplified to allow an easy starting point from which futher evolution might improve them, and to make it so that people without much artistic skill can still edit the pictures without having the results look terrible.

Do not worry. There will be pictures that are not meant to be edited. Those will be of higher quality.

The chemical spill pervades the water and soaks into the land affecting all its denizens.

The Nanzi, being most resistant to the toxins, have become the dominant predators on land, occasionally feeding upon Slygg that come to the surface.

The Slygg were affected by the spill to a degree, and occasionally mutants are born with two heads. No other benefits are conferred by this.

The Foram were hit hardest, being in the direct path of the spill. The few survivors stick close to the shore, in shallow water. Large colonies still exist in isolated mud lakes, which were largely unaffected.

Good enough for me. The underground fungi becomes the main food source for the Slowslygg. They cluster around the dead bodies of their brothers so the fungi can grow. When it does they mostly become stationary, locking tentacles. If uninterrupted - generations of slowslygg can make vast underground farms from their fallen bodies.

Due to the abundance of fungi - the Slowslygg colonies will grow a giant slygg by happen-chance. This is not a subspecies, just an effect the surplus has on the population. Still very slow, and almost immobile, its mouth is big enough to swallow any nearby creature walking by. The Giant slyggs spend their lives closer to the surface, with large colonies attached behind them.

The fungalnanzi make a mad scramble to escape their attackers, while the mimicslyggs attempt to take them down and devour them. In the end many on both sides have died but a sizeable portion of the fungalnanzi have slipped past and have now reformed themselves in a more familiar environment. There are now 3 breeds of Titan/Fungal Anazi. The survivors of the cave have been altered by the crystals touch. The fungus they grow no longer grows naturally, instead it creates a flesh crystal.

The herders/growers now have crystals growing on their back plates. Meanwhile the former spore spewing Anazi have grown crystal spikes. They can use these as a better form of protection. Both however can no longer eat their flesh fungi/crystals.

The affected individuals who die now create crystal spores that are more aggressive in feeding off the ashen lichen. In time there may be no more flesh fungi to eat.

The spore spewers still exist and help protect its fellows. Even though doing so means it food supply is running out. (It doesn't know this though)

The old Burly ones have grown in size and strength, their larger mandibles approx 50% larger than earlier, and their whole mass another 50%, forming the "Hunters"(bottom right). The old drones have succumbed to the old "standard" burlies (top right), "Drones", and a new strand of "Sensory" Slyggs, (bottom left) who burrow into the ground with their backsides to the surface. They have an extremely strong tremorsence combarable to vision as long as the target is in contact with the ground, (blind if the target flies, no one does that yet) and they have purple and red exposed nerves along their lenght that stick out of the ground to send data to the local brains. The Sensory slaggs prevent the Hunters from attacking too large game.

Some crystal nanzi were placated by their new easier lives. Some decided that it was a good time to feed their crystals. The largest of the Nanzi began to cannibalize their smaller cousins. In doing so the symbiotic nanzi were incorporated into their systems.

These new larger more aggressive Nanzi developed a sac where their fungal systems were protected along with a flesh crystal armor in their middle years. They have diverged from both smaller crystal nanzi relatives.

The Hivemind slygg start constructing rudimentary nests from chitin carcasses by cutting them to pieces with their pincers and melting them back together with their acidic saliva (that i'd totally forgotten). They construct igloo like structures in all sorts of places with only one or two entryways (such as caverns and canyons). In these igloos reside the new MotherSlyggs, the rare females who turn into birthing machines and aren't controlled by the brains. The motherslyggs simply sit around in the nests and give birth to an immense amount of eggs, protected by the drones who make the nest larger and sort the eggs by the "type" to be. The type born is determined by who mates with the queen, except for other queens which are born rarely from brain eggs. The Hivemind slyggs multiply a lot, and become ravenous packhunters. They don't give a damn about the algae, though.

The motherslyggs are quite large, around a meter in length. They are practically immobile, defended by all other slyggs, and they have sensoryslyggs around the entrances to their hives keeping guard.

After being able to contact a non-slygg mind, the Hivemindslygg undergo a social transformation. The brainslyggs become by far the most common type, and the sensory slygg dies out. The brainslyggs start detecting other species thoughts, predicting their movement and planning even better ambushes. They can even implant basic desires, such as hunger, to lure the prey to a fresh kill, and to dull their minds so they aren't as prone to detecting the impending ambush. They can now also pinpoint flying creatures. The race still has no way of detecting plantlife, except through touch. Using the abilities still requires a great number of brainslyggs in one place.

The large amount of brainslyggs required to use the new abilities changes the hunting behaviour of the hivemindslyggs. instead of small packs, they operate in fewer, but huge hordes with a number of brainslyggs to coordinate and disrupt the prey.

The Hunter hivemind slyggs lose the centipede look and gain powerful backlegs on which they can outrun prey and predators. They start carrying the brains on their backs when traveling long distances. Their acidic saliva develvops further, losing acidity but becoming an adhesive slime that hardens when not inside their mouths. They learn how to spit this adhesive for relatively long distances. The distance comes at the cost of accuracy, though, but usually there are tens, if not hundreds, of hunters spitting. This new weapon is used mainly against flying opponents, and injured Hunters now start making the nest's even more durable by using their saliva as glue. This also enables them to construct inside walls to their nests, enabling more structural integrity, and more space for eggs (several floors).
