266 KB Ancient Tribal Game Indonesian Gentleman 04/06/12(Fri)10:18 No.18595526
Hello again! Over the last few weeks, we've been evolving creatures in this yet-unnamed world to the point of sentience. Which means, it's time to see how their culture evolve! Tribal time!

Pic related, it's a modified world map from the one an anon did a few threads ago.
But, we won't encompass all of the world this time. That'd be too time-consuming.
    So...

...we'll focus our tribal development here, in this unnamed continent. Here are the rules:
    1) tribes can start at the red marked areas (labeled A to P), but there are restrictions depending on which species or ethnicity your tribe is composed of (will be detailed further).
    2) You can take any tribe and decide things for them. Roll a d20 for success. This includes expanding territory, developing technologies, diplomacy, attacks, etc.
    3) As usual, you may edit the creature's pic if you like - with a caveat this time: major edits are for equipment/clothing or buildings (see further explanations) primarily, while further evolutions are very minor (such as subtle coloration change, elongation of manipulative digits etc).
    4) I'll be here to arbitrate things and give the final say on things.

Let's continue to the available species/ethnicity to choose!

    Alright!
Hoppa guy is finally able to participate!

The tribal hoppa group calling themselves the Nad'lun wander the wast riverside plains in the area of K.
This is where the practice of communing with with the lesser hoppas, and forming wast symbiotic herds first took root.
The Nad'lun culture is focused around the herd which they guard and guide. The herd is composed mostly from Tuft Hoppas, and Mega Hoppas. The predatory Flash Hoppas also follow the herd, not in search of prey though. The Nad'lun use these swift predators as attack and guard "dogs", and the promise of guaranteed food along with the mutual pheromone based communication has convinced numerous packs of Flash Hoppas to guard the herds.

The Nad'lun culture itself is heavily focused on the herd, and the pheromone based communication. They have a shamanic religion built around their innate ability to understand the scent messages of all hoppa species. They see all hoppas as one people, and themselves as the destined guardians of their brethren. They also believe in reincarnation through the "Wind of Souls" that they think that flows trough the world and connects all hoppas in life and death.

They are almost constantly moving, and because of this, they travel lightly. Most equipment is simple to carry and replace using the materials provided by the herd or the environment around them. When the herd stops for rest, the Nad'lun send out hunters and gatherers to seek out additional resources.
Even though the herd might have moved out before these scavengers return, they can usually locate it by it's signature scent.

    >>18596767

Here are the four most important social roles of the Nad'Lun society. They aren't strict castes, as the Nad'luns serve in multiple roles during their 40 years spanning lifetime.

The Shamans are the spiritual leaders of the Nad'lun society. They are the masters of the "Scent Way", which is the pheromone based communication. They can commune and understand the will of the herd, and they provide guidance to the whole society accordingly. They can decipher the frail scent messages that the wind carries to the tribe with stunning clarity, and they often speak in almost prophetic fashion of events that have happened afar.

The warriors are the guardians and protectors of the herd. They are ever vigilant for ferocious predators or other threats that could endanger the tribe. The Nad'lun prefer their speed and agility in combat over strength or hardiness. They also compensate their frailness by using slings with surprising accuracy and stopping power. Their spears are used to keep the enemies at distance, while the other warriors pummel the them into submission with rocks. They use their knives as secondary weapons.
    >> Anonymous 04/06/12(Fri)13:51 No.18597030
    >>18597025

The herders are arguably the second most important members of the tribe. They are the glue that keeps the herd together. They use their limited skills in the Scent Way to guide their lesser brethren, and to transfer the overall commands of the Shamans to the whole herd.

The young minders are the most important members of the Nad'lun society, as they are the ones ensure that the future generations of tribals can mature.
They are the ones that guard and tend to the young, and more often than not, they are the ones who also give birth to them. Although like all the hoppas, the tribal hoppas are hermaphrodites, but unlike the other hoppa species, who spawn hundreds of floating larvae, the tribal hoppas give birth to few more developed young. The pregnancy takes it's toll on the performance of the tribal hoppas, making them less effective at their other duties.
Because of this, the young minders have also become the great mothers of the tribe. They tend and give birth to the wast majority of the Nad'lun, making them also the social glue that keeps the tribe together. As they are all one big family, infighting is less frequent.

Lem congregated around point A, calling themselves Ta'mirel. The Ta'mirel are a tribe of Apex Hunters, there is no leadership. When a task begins if another Lem is around it will stop what it is doing to help in the task. From building, to berserking. Predation to play. The all lem value these things, and for the Ta'mirel it is just natural to aid your "other". This immediate urge to cooperate/ "group up" to complete the task of the moment is possibly their best trait.
    ------------------
A lem grows in size and strength until it gets large enough to divide and create two new Lems. Both are the individual, both are now their unique individuals too. It is important to protect the "self-family" from outside threats.
    ---------------
The Ta'mirel Scout their territory, all information is important. Prey species, competing predators, other tribals, odd things.

When reaching adolescence, the young Nad'lun have to adopt one of the numerous roles the adult tribals occupy. Most of them become scouts, scavengers or apprentice herders, who will eventually become proper herders and then shamans.
Some however, choose to leave the protective sanctuary the herd provides, and fulfill their wanderlust in the wast plains that surround them. These young wanderers will often eventually encounter a different tribe, which they in many cases, join. This behavioral trait serves a vital goal. To mix up the stagnating genepool of the tribes, that results from their breeding behaviors, as different tribes usually avoid each other, in order to avoid conflict, as the herds require large amounts of food and having two large herds in the same are would quickly deplete the available resources. Because of this, interbreeding with different tribes is mostly done by these young maidens.

Hoppa dude must go to sleep soon, but before that, I shall post some random tidbits about the tribal Hoppas in general, that other people in case they wish to start a tribe of them, should know.

Firstly, although the hoppas communicate mostly with pheromones that are capable of transferring surprisingly complex information, they also utilize secondary and tertiary forms of communication. They rely heavily on body language to convey messages. While their pheromones transfer the base information about their intent, motivation, and so on, they use their movement to weave this raw date into a coherent story. Their phosphorescent patches on their snouts are also used to alter the tone of the message.
They do utilize vocalization, but in a limited fashion, usually in the form of war cries and warning shrieks. If voice is added to their silent dance, it usually means that the message the hoppa is trying to tell is extremely urgent.
    >> Anonymous 04/06/12(Fri)18:05 No.18599305
    >>18599294

Hoppas are somewhat artistic, their primary sense being their sight. They utilize body-paints, but music is a foreign concept to them. Their hearing is quite poor, as their ancestors evolved to sense vibrations trough the ground rather than the air. The small hairs in their toes still serve this purpose.

They lack any sort of written language, and are unlikely to develop one easily, as their language is extremely complex, carrying hundreds of different tones for the same concepts, which can significantly alter the full meaning of their dance.
It also doesn't help that they naturally understand the basics of this language, and that the pheromones of the tribe itself form some sort of semi collective memory and idea bank that constantly feeds the minds of the young with raw experience of the tribe's history.
Although curious, the tribal hoppa society and nomadic lifestyle isn't very encouraging for innovation, and thus, they are technologically quite stagnant.

And finally, as a people, the tribal hoppas fucking LOVE pouches. Pouches and strings baby. Easy to attach to their tentacles and legs. Easy to carry stuff around. Apart from these pouches, the tribal hoppas have jet to develop much more advanced clothing.

I feel like I still need to ad that not all hoppa tribes necessarily follow the nomadic Nad'lun way of life, or share their religion. The tribal hoppas inhabit the southern half of the continent. The Nad'lunian herd culture originates from the eastern coastal region.
No need for all tribal hoppas to be herd based.

Here's an extra. Updated attire. The Frowgmen have embraced the art of dyeing their silks and hides over the centuries. Tribes have varied colors and designs based on personal taste and cultural relevance. This frogman has 4 bord feathers tethered to his cap dyed yellow as a show of praise from the matriarch. Exceptional hunters may have more festive adornments in multiple fans on their caps and favored spears. The spears as usual are made with frilla vine and bark, allowing the warriors to send electric currents through them while they're fresh. The spearheads are still made from the non-tribal hoppa beak bones as a sort of vintage preference over newer flint spearheads.

    Hoppa dude here.
    I have a question.
Will we have random events happen in the tribal game, like we did in the earlier evo threads?
    Another question.
Is there a rain-dry season cycle in this continent?
I assume the K region is just general riverside plains. A weather cycle would have a great effect on the migratory patterns of the Nad'lun.

The Ta'mirel scouts have traveled far and wide. After a lengthy period of debrief they report to the masses what has been seen. Herding. One species can lead another without killing it. This means meat, bone, leather, and horn. They reported on trade between the Frowgmanon, indeed that there is more then one clan of them. Of plants that do not murder!! Indeed, the southern lands were warm and soft. This gave the Ta'mirel conclave something to ponder on.
    -------
A general concensus that the Ramel were to be herded was developed. So, the Ta'mirel conclave set out to do just that, either thru coersion or brutality. domestication would be accomplished.

((i figure being advanced at hunting might pay off here, considering im trying to capture and not murder this time, even if i fail..eh...more meat and bones.))

Yes, random events will happen. But they won't be as severe as previous events. Or rather, severe events would be rarer.
And yes, there is a rain/dry season, at least in the IKLM area. Further north there's the usual four seasons, while in the snowy areas there's a 'night season' and 'day season'.
And for the area you delineated in >>18598430
it's mostly river plains, with some coastal plains to the east. The dark green near M is marsh/jungle.

the Ta'mirel's attempt at coercing the Ramel into domestication has failed, mainly because their agressive tactics do not placate the Ramel. As a side effect, though, the hunters bring back half a dozen Ramel of varying types. More blades for them.

And as for their dreams of going south, the Lem thrive in the cold... but can they survive warmer weather? Only time would tell...

By the way, for all tribes, fancy drawing a building? Or are they still living in caves and natural shelters? A simple hut would be nice.

The Nad'lun build these shelters when the herd occasionally stops.

You might want to read some of the earlier threads to get the general idea of the species and environment in this world, so you won't make any major inconsistencies with them.
Though if you want to just jump in, you might as well use the tribal hoppa info dump I made earlier, to get the gist of that species. The religious stuff applies mostly to the Nad'lun tribe, but the methods of their communication are universal in all tribal hoppas.

The Ta'mirel were without need, physically. The cold did not bother them, they had no internal scaffolding like the other organisms of the planet in which to be bothered by discomfort, and rest was not significant to them, as Lem do not sleep. they rest by inactivity, and one does not hunt all day. Mentally, spiritually, they were without, and over time they built areas to congregate and share ideas. From the late nights staring at the fire, speaking of greater things to the humble beginnings of music for them this was a massive development for them. At a rapid pace the Ta'mirel developed the ideas of group discussion, lecture, and constructive debate..granted, about better ways in which to stab, and ambush, but sometimes about music, and art. From this, the Ta'mirel have developed new ideas and new weapons. How potent remains to be seen.

The Ta'mirel became highly accomplished Scrimshaw craftsmen and leather tanners, making use of the abundant bone, tusk and hide in the icy tundra. The carrion weapons and armor they created were of a higher quality and hardness then the flint and wood items of the south.
    ---------------------
Armscraft became a pastime of the conclave, done as a form of art while others would play music. The giant lem, while savage and nearly mindless, never attacked the Ta'Mirel. So the Ta'mirel would leave Massive punching blades made from the tusks of AlphaRamel and Cidex near the GiantLem to aid their brethren.
    ------
The Ta'mirel attempt to contact the Tundra Frowgmen, in an attempt to trade for their woven baskets, dyed cloth and silks that the Frowgmanon have been known to trade to their arctic brothers.
    ------
Not ones to be dissuaded the Ta'mirel conclave again takes up arms to go on another great hunt. They will either tame the abundant Ramel and Cidex, or eventually kill off their populations and be forced to travel to new hunting grounds.
    -------
(so, rolling for all 3 things, lets see if the GiantLem are bro, The Frowgmen dont take advantage of and/or attack the Inexperienced and socially akward (to other species), and see how many more times its gonna take for them to tame the local beasts. dice rolled in order of events) hey, however it goes down, the weapons are eventually gonna trickle down to the south.

    Where did everyone go?
Well, anyways, here are some generic Nad'lun tools and other objects.

The scent staffs are used by the herders. They are mostly ritualistic, as the dried up pheromone bladders of the other hoppas serve mainly as religious symbols, although freshly taken, they still emit the base pheromones of the hoppa breed it belongs to, allowing the user to mask his own scent with them.
As the herders become more experienced, their staffs are made more elaborate. The staffs used by the shamans were originally scent staffs too.

The various bladed tools of the Nad'lun are made mostly from wood and the beaks of the other hoppas, or stones. Some of them are used for hunting and fishing, others are mainly weapons and some are all purpose tools.

The Nad'lun use slings and bolas to fight and hunt from a distance. They are quite accurate and the killing power of their rocks is spectacular.

The dried scent bladders of other hoppas are religiously important objects for the Nad'lun. They are often used in rituals and carried around tied to their arms or in bracelets.

The bright colored orbs are harvested from the eyes of the other hoppas. They are the hard translucent shells that both protect the sensitive sight organs inside of them and focus the light waves to them. Over these orbs is the topmost hard lens, that collect the light and bend the light to the innermost orbs.

The orbs are also religious totems, that are thought to bring luck.

The Mevola have been spotted through the frilla forest's western borders. These plantfolk were unlike the gentle violet frilla that they nurture and receive nurture in turn. They we ravenous, massive, ungainly and frightening. Attacking those who'd dare leave the forest canopies. Fortification work begin as erection of log and root walls enclosing the gaps between their grove begins. They are electrically stimulated into binding and weaving, a trait that makes their union with the frilla one of a kind. Their northern brothers surely share a similar one with the arctic offshoots.

The elders enter their hallucinogenic trances in a bide to commune with the forest, asking it to shelter them and defend them until they can bide for time.

Meanwhile, frowgmagnon artisans have been experimenting with new forms of artillery. The gas bladder from domesticated explosive hoppa may spray their volatile fluids and be ignited with stimulus from bio-electric sparks. Other concoctions could be drawn into the emptied sacs, such as the cocktails of poison the frilla trees already produce in their hazy environments.

The Lem and the Nad'Lun's shamans start receiving weird visions.

For the Lem, a terrifying Nightmare Spirit happened to visit the eldest shaman, and put forth visions of death and disasters of a great scale. The spirit then declares for the Lem to either follow him in spreading death and destruction, or stand in its way and be obliterated. If they want to follow the Nightmare Spirit, they will put a skull on a stick and put it outside the shaman's hut.

Meanwhile, the Nad'Lun's shaman saw luminous shapes in the sky, and they spoke unintelligible things. They took the shaman to a place made of cold smooth rock, and they grafted an amulet on the shaman's head, just below the infrared eye. The shaman then wakes up, the glittering amulet still stuck on the shaman's head.

Alright! Spore Yantar and Gludone's are once again active! Primitive, but active.

Following their queen and growing into a large populace among the Yantar plants in the swarm lands of the continents, large underground cities began to collectively flurish. The Gludone drones, specialized in raising the young and harvesting the mushrooms and cave fungus, grew proficient at that task as the generations went by. Warrior castes, bred by their queen, began appearing in the outer rim's of each colony's foundation. The hive was being compartmentalized into each task even more then before, and new queens became highly desirable in their rarity. Some of the largest of the colonies beneath the soil would contain as many as four queens, each producing for different zones within the colony...

Former species: Gludone worms and the Spore Yantar plants
    Name: Glüd Collective Hive

Gov'ment: Matriarchal led High Council, followed by an unconscious/instinctual Hive Mind mentality creating a subspecies caste division based on roles needed to support the colony as a whole. Highly supportive of colony "royalty"

Food: dominantly Herbivore, but also digests soil to process minerals and salts and mild radioactive materials dredged from the marsh. Fungus and glowing mushrooms are farmed food types.

Communication: communicates through a electro-chemical based language, picked up by their many feelers they have on the front of their heads. They speak on a personal level, usually by interweaving each others antennae/feelers together to enhance the nerve connection of both Glüd worms. The antennae send out small micro-pulses to transmit the message, along with various chemicals and pheromones to aid in the nature of the message. This is how each of the Glüd worms communicate outside of their collective concious, which is stored in the Mind Bug's thoughts. Each worm has two minds, individual and the collective hive.

"Many are One, One are Many."

The only exception to this would be the Glüd royalty, the Queen only communicating to the Mind Bugs, or the High Council.

Religion: As of yet, the Glüd have no religion. Many, though, are worshipping the life giving trees they live under, the Yantar plants. The Glüd call the plants "Yrwagk" (Ear-walk) and they believe that without the High Council, the Queen's Guidance, or the life giving Yrwagk trees the colonies would simply not exist.

The frillaTree's have gone silent. An age of time where the creatures benath their tendrals and colors has forced them to consider, and ponder future courses of action. Some have seen the destruction caused in the name of the sun,. others the barbaric courses of action that their silence has wrought, and still others the death cries of their island breatherin, or the chatter of their ocean bourne ancestors as they skirted the seas filled with ice. A new course of action has to be taken, and so the Frilla begin their march. Ancient limbs lift from the ground, and slowly the forests begin their movement with earth shaking steps. Similarly, the islands are converged upon by the sea-borne frilla, and begin large scale transportation to what will be the greatest meeting of the frilla. Slowly they march, and begin converging on the mountains. When the sea-borne have transported the island based, the island based stoop down and carry their brothers atop themsselves. Inexorably, they march. Their forests plant themsleves surrounding the mountains at the center of the continent. They march on. The tallest and oldest among them begin to climb, a few slipand fall, crashing against the ground, and they still march on. Finally one has reached the top of the mountain, its body covered in ice, its light somewhat dimmed even as it has risen above the clouds.

Current status: Four major large colonies, centered around large clumping of Yantar plants in places where marsh waters converge. As many as 6-10 smaller colonies, only which one or two are completely self sustaining. The others rely on a network of small tunnels used as trade and communication lanes, forming a large wall of smaller colonies interconnected as a barrier to the main bulk of the land unexplored outside the marshlands.

The Quad Colonies, the major four colonies, are widely centered on pacts of isolationism, as mixing of the colonies leads to a confusion in Glüd of their own home (because of the hive mind cross over from separate Mind Bug input)
This leads to feudalistic colonies which only trade communication and excess resources in times of dire need, leaving each to progress largely on their own in this current point in time. Soon, new generations are given rise to, and each Frilla grows a bit larger than the previous. Fibers that were merely woody, now become much stronger, stronger than bone. Tougher than rock. Homes are grown inside and outside, to allow beings to reside safely among the tree's. The canopies increase in size, in effort to limit the suns poisonous nature. New hallucinogens are born from the sap of the Frilla, and many are able to return to the old ways of contact.

Yet still, the plans of the Frilla are yet to be truly enacted. A decision has been made, and a course of action chosen.

((Unfortunately my scanner refuses to cooperate with me.... I should have the images up eventually. For now its a picture of the sea-borne))

The Ta'mirel made their stance known to the spirit... they chose to defy the nightmare. Indeed, in the following months, trouble falls upon the Ta'mirel in the form of carnivorous Ragas attacks which claimed their Cidex pair, and four of their own. But all is not lost, for the Cidex left them their bones, and they managed to capture several Ramel eggs. These eggs now hatch, and it seems these Ramel newborns consider the Lem as their mother...

This action was seen by the K'Lahk, who now stopped their rock volleys, curious as what these strange armored Lem has in mind.

"What is it that trouble you so, o long-head?" He then said to the Lem, which obviously do not speak Frowgmanese. The Lem then spoke, slowly, while drawing a circle with crosshatches in the middle of it on the snow.

I might as well bumb with some mythic stuff to fluff out the Nad'lun, while I wait for IG to return.

One of the most prominent legends of the Nad'lun is the tales of O'nulaa the seer. He was said to be the first Nad'lun to master the Scent Way, by searching out the whispers of the Soul Wind scattered across the world.
O'nulaa is a mythic hero of the Nad'lun tribe, he is said to have been the one who unified the scattered tribes together, and formed the first herd. According to one legend, one of his first great deeds was to tame the mighty King Hoppa, who stalked the marshes. He used this beast to drive the ravenous predatory plants from the hidden valley of his tribe.

The Nad'lun see themselves as descendants of O'nulaa and they believe that when he passed away, his spirit was infused to the Soul Wind itself, freeing him from the cycle of reincarnation. It is believed that his spirit still guides the herds, and when a time of grave need comes, he shall return to a mortal coil to aid his children in peril.

I don't mind. Swole frogs be swole.

The southern frowgmagnon have been going through gradual changes over the centuries, becoming leaner and tall with every strife that tested their agility and dexterous mettle. Their hind webbings have vanished but left behind bony spurs on their powerful legs, promoting a form of martial unarmed combat using legwork and their filed claws. Their four forelimbs have lost their bulk in favor of finer handling of tools and weapons. Their tails have atrophied as their stance depended less and less on leaning on it for support.

Their culture has been a renaissance over the ages, art and sport flourish. A rudimentary script of pie-chart like circles and fractions has been invented, inspired by the frilla wood cuttings which are used to print them. The frilla plant matters having become stronger have allowed for more intricate weapons, such as double-hoppa glaives and throwing hatchets. Chirurgy has been making quite an advancement as glund shells are lacquered with saps and resin to endure long generations of use, some sets of armor becoming practical tribal heirlooms. Fashion has gone little in the way of change.

Attempts to domesticate Ramel from northern frowg trades have ended in tragedy, refraining from acquisition of the elusive ramel blades except during the seasonal trades with their burly cousins.

The trees have sheltered their people from the sun long and far, giving them exceptional nocturnal senses along with their various other perceptive abilities in the hazy twilit forests.

Today a party Fo'wil trailblazers set out on their hoppa mounts on a long journey through the southern swamp lands. The Matriarch believes they need to expand toward the rarely strayed southern forests and make their commune and claim with the frilla spirit.

The conclave invites the FrowgMen into their tribe. They go on their hunts, eat with them, and in time they begin to learn eachothers language. Next, the shock that there were no elders, or true in fighting. Lem, are all lem. as each lem splits, the resulting lem share the memories of the first, and from those before it, and in that way there are ancestral memories, locked away, hard to recall, but in dream like states can be reached. Finally were the rights of death. When one lem dies, the tribe eats it. They gain some of its memories, and a portion of its biomass. In this way the lem lives on. This was also...odd, for the frowg. Ok so the K'Lahk are 1 big tribe basically made up of familial circles.
Families live close to one another in tight knit circles. One or two frowgs are selected from the family to represent them among the tribe.

Then as a group the representatives discuss what needs to be done and which family will be doing it. When a decision is made the representatives bring word back the the others what their next task will be.

Each family has a warrior and an elder that usually represent them, though there have been exceptions. As you can guess this may lead to some families becoming stronger than others, but so far that has not yet happened, though it very well might in the future.
